Contract for town tourism strategy approved on split vote; cost tripled by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News
A contract was awarded for the town to proceed with a corporate tourism strategy despite a tripling of the cost and opposition from three councillors. Councillors voted 4-3 to award the contract to Western Management Consultants in association with Miller Dickson Blais Ltd. in the amount of $60,000 plus tax. The town’s budget, passed last December, included $20,000 for the project. Three responses were received from the request for proposals and evaluated by a project selection
committee comprised of Tim Schmidt (director of planning and development), Joanne Gaudet (communications officer) and Vicki Kurz (economic development officer). The successful bidder will provide a comprehensive strategy, indicated Kurz. “The development of a strategy to this detail and magnitude would typically cost between $45,000 and $75,000,” she wrote in her report. “The selection committee agreed to recommend the town move forward with a thorough strategy that will guide council in the next term.” Kurz also noted the strategy would be presented to council in
September. “This would allow ample time to prepare budgets for the implementation plan components and to source funding in the winter of 2013-14. “I like the idea that we continue on this year for some implementation next year,” said Councillor Dale Plante who noted creation of the strategy is a high priority. “If we’re going to do it, we need to do it right.” However Councillor Laverne Asselstine wasn’t sold. “We’re going to spend $60,000 just to kick off the whole process,” he said noting Kurz’s comments about implementation costs in next year’s budget. He added he’s always concerned
about what he calls ‘creep’. “Adding up numbers we’re starting to go up and up and up with regards to tourism.” “Where I see the benefit,” said Councillor Sean McIntyre, “is in the efficiency for dollars. We have an affinity for tourism but we don’t have a plan, that’s where the scaled down option worries me.” One of the bids was for $24,900, but that was for “a broader strategy” and so ranked low by the committee. Councillor Graham Parsons also supported putting a plan in place “to save money in the long run”. “I’m still not convinced we need to spend a lot of money attracting
more people to this community,” said Councillor Ken MacVicar. Noting we already attract about one million people a year, he said, “I’m not so sure we, as a council, need to be the impetus. The business community are the ones who really benefit from this. The strategy is $60,000, who knows what the implementation cost is — I don’t support it at this point.” Councillor Rick Grimson agreed with MacVicar and Asselstine. “The tourism industry has survived for 100 years, what’s the urgency.” He was concerned about where the additional money was coming from to pay for the strategy. Interact, Sylvan’s newest service club, involves high school students by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News
Sylvan Lake’s newest service club bodes well for the future of public service and volunteerism in our community. It’s comprised of 19 H. J. Cody High School students and two teachers. Sylvan Lake Interact Club held its Charter Night ceremonies at the Legion hall last Thursday evening. Interact Clubs are Rotary sponsored organizations for teenagers aged 14-18. Interact has lots of fun activities, but there is also a serious side. Service! Interact is all about making a difference in your school and in your country, according to the Rotary District 5360 website. The program gives young people an opportunity to participate in fun, meaningful service projects while developing leadership skills and meeting new friends. Teacher Alana Routhier said she started an Interact Club in Bowden and when she moved to Cody this year she really missed it so she began work to start a club here. “These kids just blew me away, they’re so selfmotivated, they jump on any task. It’s very amazing and beautiful.” Then she turned the floor over to the students to comment on why they became involved. Among
their reasons are for the involvement in school and community, it’s a really good experience, it’s a great way to give back to the community, we can help people, it presents lots of opportunities and options to help others, I wanted to get to know kids in other grades and get out into the community, it empowers us to change our community in ways we haven’t been able to before, and it’s pretty awesome getting involved. Several students said this is the first chance they’ve had to be part of anything where they’re giving back to the community and world. A group of Rotary Club of Sylvan Lake members were on hand to welcome the students and teachers into the family of Rotarianism. Rotary Club president Cynthia Giguere told the students “you really inspire us … it’s so wonderful to see those in the coming generation giving back.” She thanked Routhier for her constant enthusiasm. And Giguere also thanked the parents — “you people instilled values that make these people willing to give, you gave them life lessons that made it possible …” Routhier indicated formation of the club is “a testament to how strong our community is” adding Rotarians “have been so supportive”.

Members of the new Interact Club from H. J. Cody High School gathered around their banner during Charter Night last Thursday. The banner was donated by the Rotary Club of Sylvan Lake which is affiliated with the Interact Club. Charter members included, in the back row, Liam O’Callaghan, Breanna Tait, Jessica Beckwith, Bennett Hreherchuk, Annika Vetter, Wyatt Bossé, and teacher Alana Routhier; in the middle row, Ivanaka Tucker, Alexis Koster, Kara Canning and Shiori Takeshita; and in the front row, Amber Carson, Bobbi Cerin, Ann Duffy, Bethany Mulholland and Brooklyn Soley. Absent from the ceremony were Michael Campbell, Chais Avery, Lauren Arp, Hailey DeClercke and teacher Megan Buyks. STEVE DILLS
The invitation to the evening’s program added, “we have learned from those around us, the value of being community minded and caring human beings.” Due to poor winter weather, both District Governor Fran Leggett of Lethbridge, and guest speaker, Jennifer Feduniw, of Innisfail, the district Rotaract chair, were unable to attend. The club, which just started in September, has become active very quickly. Among projects they’ve participated in are We Day through Free the
Children, Coats for Kids, Skate-A-Thon, Coins for Kids for the Christmas Bureau, Yuletide Festival, Christmas Shoeboxes (Samaritan’s Purse), Spa gift certificate sales as a Lighthouse fundraiser, Clean Water Campaign with a Free the Children Penny Drive. They’ve also been volunteers with Rotary club members at Winterfest sleigh rides and during Rotary’s Santa Claus Parade food bank drive, collecting spare change along the parade route. Goals for the remainder of the year include vol-
Contract for town tourism... Continued from Page 1 Mayor Susan Samson argued in favour of the strategy. She said the town has spent over $20 million in the lakeshore area and even though it attracts a million visitors those people aren’t spending money in the community. “If we don’t capitalize on our investment we’ve made a horrendous mistake.” “We can’t put the brakes on and expect things to happen,” Samson said. Plante added with the plan they can get ‘buy-in’ from businesses. “But we need a plan for them to buy-in. We are here to facilitate it. We don’t have to be in the driver’s seat. We have to get the resources out there. If it’s a clear
enough strategy they will buy in.” Voting in favour of DO YOUR PART

Businesses shouldn’t need government intrusion Whenever government gets involved in the realm of the business and volunteer community we shudder. And we believe Sylvan Lake residents should be shaking in their boots about what’s coming down the road as far as the town’s proposal to create a Corporate Tourism Strategy is concerned. A contract was awarded by councillors at Monday night’s meeting, but just narrowly with four voting in favour and three voting against. One of the sticking points for Councillor Laverne Asselstine was that this is just the beginning. An auspicious beginning at that since the project budget was tripled from $20,000 to $60,000. What that gets, he rightly noted, is a plan for more expenditures next year. Councillor Ken MacVicar made some good points too. We’re already attracting thousands and thousands — the much used estimate is one million people — annually. So do we want to attract more? We know many residents who won’t venture downtown or to the beach in the summer because of the crowds. We question, as well, Mayor Susan Samson’s comment that too many of those one million people aren’t spending money in our community and thus our businesses aren’t benefit-
ting. This despite over $20 million spent on improvements along the lakeshore. Is that something the town should be trying to correct? We believe businesses should be doing more themselves and co-operatively together, if they’re concerned about their sales. But then we read the request for proposals for the Corporate Tourism Strategy. We may be wrong, but it looks to us like the strategy is to examine tourism activities currently undertaken by the town itself — things like the Pond Hockey tournament that’s organized by town staff. The project description states: “A full review of current Town of Sylvan Lake tourism activities and promotions is required with a resulting draft Tourism Strategy that will direct the Town in its tourism activities and promotional activities. The Strategy will identify key audiences and their associated key messages and should provide the Town with a detailed description of actions and tactics to improve the audience’s awareness of tourism in Sylvan Lake and the value of the tourism activities and opportunities the community has to offer. A key component of the Strategy will include how to engage residents to understand the value that a strong tourism base
Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News
brings to the community.” Sounds like besides determining whether or not town staff should be organizing more activities to draw tourists, the strategy is also meant to convince taxpayers that more tourism is good for Sylvan Lake. If the strategy was meant to
attract more tax paying businesses to town there might be some benefit to residents who are the majority of the people footing the tax bill — but we don’t see that. We see the town stepping into the arena where businesses and non-profit organizations should be spurring growth. Of course, businesses will be content to sit back and let someone do the work for them. Then they’ll reap the benefits with many not even offering a thank you.
Enlightening Results While results of the questions posed on the Sylvan Lake News website are by no way a scientific result, they do provide an interesting insight into what our readers are thinking. Here’s the results of the last three questions: Do you think Sylvan Lake’s mayor and councillors should be paid more to do their jobs? Concerned about fence being erected around marina Dear Editor, Here we go again! I’m writing to you in concern of the fence they are putting up around the marina. This is suppose to be a public boat launch. The town has sold the public boat launch out from under the residents
of Sylvan Lake and now this fence is going to be blocking the view of the lake. For the health of the town we DO NOT need to block the lake any further than you have. They have slowly crushed Sylvan Lake residents’ rights. Is it not against the rules
to block public access to the boat launch? Do we not want people to come to Sylvan Lake for the beauty of the lake or a white picket fence blocking the view. I’m sure most residents or even the tourists aren’t going to be happy to loose another
bite from their view. We have motels, hotels and commercial businesses sitting empty. This is not a HEALTHY situation for a growing town. Cheryl Maki, Sylvan Lake Editor’s Note: The marina property and boat launch have
been owned by private businesses for many years. A development permit has been issued by the town for various projects on the site. Part of the approval was that the boat launch would be available for public use.

Business plan being created to promote solution for Sylvan’s medical needs by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News
Creation of a business plan which identifies a ‘made in Sylvan Lake and area’ solution to identified gaps in medical services is being planned by the Sylvan Lake and Area Urgent Care Committee. “We will be focusing on the shared and expanded use of existing resources and the associated costs and staffing requirements,” stated an update issued last week by committee chair Susan Samson. The committee is pleased to accept the redirection of donations that were collected by Annie Boychuk after the untimely passing of her husband, Brent, said Samson. “These monies will be used to finance the development of a professional business plan for an Urgent Care Centre for Sylvan Lake and area.”
“Our tragic story has touched the lives of many in this community and as far as Calgary, Ontario, Europe and beyond,” said Annie Boychuk. “We are very grateful to all who donated and continue in support of the desperate need of health care services here in Sylvan Lake. I know that by redirecting the money we have collected into the Urgent Care fund, we can strengthen our voice as a community. The province needs to know that we will not give up.” The group has been busy in continuing its pursuit for improved medical services. The committee has reviewed the recently released draft for Family Care Clinics (FCC) which outlines governance procedures, funding and staffing commitments. Committee member Dr. Brad Bahler spent considerable time
reviewing the document and discussing it with other physicians an Primary Care Networks. “At this time, the proposed governance structure is concerning to our doctors and the urgent care committee,” said Samson. “Certain components of the proposed structure which the committee considers essential, are excluded from program funding. Additionally, while the government is very clear about what is not funded under the proposed structure, what is funded is much less clear. We have identified our concerns in a letter to Health Minister Fred Horne that was copied to MLA Kerry Towle.” Samson noted that the minister’s office confirmed, during a followup phone call, that they will consider the committee’s comments. “Minister Horne has always indicated that FCC will not be a ‘cookie
cutter’ solution and each FCC will be customized to meet the needs of the community,” said Samson. That’s the reason for creating the business plan. In February the committee received $12,256 from the Yuletide Festival which represented proceeds fro the first ever, very successful Christmas event. The money is held with David Thompson Health Trust for future medical equipment purposes. Sylvan Lake resident Heather Donald has been appointed to the David Thompson Health Advisory Board. “Our concerns dealing with medical gaps in Sylvan Lake and area are well represented with Heather and the committee is excited to have a stronger representation on the advisory level,” said Samson’s update. She encouraged residents to continue to
show support for urgent care by writing to MLA Kerry Towle, Health Minister Fred Horne and Premier Alison Redford with the request to fund an urgent care centre. Donations may be made online at www. davidthompsonhealthtrust.com or through cash boxes located in various locations in Sylvan Lake.

keep Terry’s legacy alive as every community no matter how big or small can make a huge impact, just as Terry learned when a small town of 10,000 people raised over $10,000,” said Rhonda Risebrough, provincial director for the Terry Fox Foundation
Alberta, Northwest Territories and Nunavut. “Keep the legacy and passion alive and become part of the annual Terry Fox Run to ensure that Terry’s dream continues in your community,” said Risebrough in a news release. “Uphold the motivation in finding a cure for cancer and continue the Terry Fox Run in Sylvan Lake!” “The Terry Fox Foundation funds
research into all kinds of cancer, believing as Terry did, that we need to conquer this disease once and for all,” she added. The foundation is looking for a motivated individual to take on the role of run organizer for the Sylvan Lake Terry Fox Run on Sept. 15. If you’re interested contact Risebrough by email at abntnu@terryfoxrun. org or phone 1-888836-9786.

- Four year old Ryan Leclerc sat patiently as Bo The Clown created a detailed mask on his face during the kcs Association Easter Eggstravaganza at the community centre Saturday afternoon. About 100 youngsters and their parents attended. Besides facepainting, the afternoon included a colouring contest, stations for making Easter baskets and bunny ears, games like a bean bag toss and pin the tail on the bunny, cotton candy and refreshments, door prizes and a chance to guess the number of jelly beans in a jar as well as the ever popular bouncing inflatables.

Tantalizing tastes of sugar loaves recreated for Sylvan’s centennial by Laurie Chilibeck Special to Sylvan Lake News
A walk through the streets to the tune of the dance halls or on a midnight stroll with just the moon to witness the crunching of his footsteps in the snow, gave
John Bos time for reflection. This new country had been good to him and his family. Soon the dough would be rising while the big rotating oven would be heating up to golden brown his bread and buns. The delicious smells would

capture the customers as they rushed in to get their orders before the shelves were empty. John came from Friesland of northern Holland in 1927 at the age of 22 years. He sailed with a special friend, Jessie, whom he knew from his homeland, and then by train from Halifax to Lacombe, Alberta. John and Jessie married and they started their family in Lacombe supported by various jobs as everyone did. John tried farming, but he decided he was a better baker than a farmer. After all, he had apprenticed as a baker since he was 13 years old. He had come to Canada with a secret in his pocket and he was willing to use it. The Bos family moved to Sylvan Lake in 1958 and opened the bakery on main street in
John Bos 1959. Thus started the famous Sugar Loaf. It was made with original ingredients and had a melt-in-your-mouth flavour to satisfy any sweet tooth. It went nicely with cheese, you could toast it, cook as french toast — a wonderful treat for kids or adults alike. By word of mouth local residents and tourists from far and wide raced to the bakery to grab enough to fill their freezers for the winter. Even if John and his staff
had baked for 24 hours, they wouldn’t have been able to keep up with the demand. Over 150 loaves were made for Saturday morning and they would always be short. People started phoning in their orders and would take 40-50 loaves at a time to stock up. Finally John had to put a limit on each order and customers had to spread their orders over two or three weekends, but usually by 2 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon, the bakery would close due to empty shelves. The unlucky ones would knock at John’s residence on Sunday hoping for any extra, but he always kept the Sunday aside for his family. John had the bakery for twenty years and retired at the age of 68 years. He left behind a wonderful legacy which

It is in these Foothills that Ryan has grown as performer and songwriter, earning several titles including the Calgary Stampede’s Nashville North Star 2012, 2012 Ponoka Talent Competition winner and Country 105/Lammles’ 2011 Rising Star. “I recently saw Tanya perform at the Alberta C ountr y Music Association’s Annual Awards show and she blew me away. She was fun to watch, has a killer voice and was a really genuine performer. We are thrilled to have her coming to our event”, said drama teacher Jacqui Renwick. A returning favourite is guitarist Shawn Kingston. He has been at every Art & Soul event and seems to just keep coming back. “I Love, LOVE, coming to Art & Soul. It is a highlight of my year and a great gig to perform,” said Kingston. Renwick and Kingston met about seven years ago when they performed together in a band in the Calgary area.
Singer/songwriter Tanya Ryan is the headliner for the fifth annual Art & Soul taking plae at H. J. Cody High School Apr. 13. SUBMITTED
“Shawn has the biggest heart of anyone I know, he is so talented and I love to watch him play. “We are so lucky to have a community of people who love music, art and drama support our schools and support our kids by attending these events. “Art & Soul is a great afternoon of good music and well worth the price of admission when we see all of the good it does for kids throughout the year. This is just one way we can give back and build the fine arts programs at H. J. Cody.” said Renwick. Music teacher Kerry Heisler will also join the concert and lend her powerful voice to the cause. Art teacher Bruce Thompson has been working hard preparing his students and the work they will be showing at the art show. He is also coordinating H. J. Cody staff who have volunteered to talk to local businesses who wish to sponsor the event or donate items for the silent auction. “The community has been very generous for this event in the past. We thank them for their support and how much they give to make the event a success and we hope we can count on them again this year.” Renwick said. Tickets are on sale at H. J. Cody’s main office. The show is on Apr 13. Bidding begins at 2:30 p.m. and the concert begins at 3:30 p.m. For more information, contact Jacqui Renwick at 403-8872412. Plans are in place for the society to build another 24 housing units at a cost of $3.8 million — two-thirds of which it hopes will be covered by provincial government funding. The purpose of the society is to offer a “hand up, not a handout” to those in need, said Peck, adding that the society aims to help people “get established, get on their feet and move on.” The society’s current inventory includes five threebedroom units, five two-bedroom units, and one onebedroom unit. The society meets at Sylvan Lake Seventh-day Adventist Church on the second Tuesday of every second month. Meetings begin at 7 p.m. and are open to the public.

Path cleared for final phase in Ryders Ridge by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News
The final phase of Ryders Ridge subdivision is proceeding after planning documents were amended and bylaws unanimously passed at Monday night’s council meeting. The Land Use Bylaw and South Area Structure Plan were changed to allow subdivision of the property to move forward. A subdivision application has already been submitted to the town. This phase will include 693 residential units with approximately 20 per cent of those multi-family units and 80 per cent single family homes, said Tim Schmidt, the town’s director of planning and development. The will be a variety of housing from single family to duplex, townhouses and row houses. A section of the area was designated for a social care facility. Schmidt explained the town’s rules require that property be available for sale for a year before anything different would be allowed there. A park area was pulled from the documents after Councillor Laverne Asselstine raised concern about what would be developed there. He questioned whether ‘public facility’ was the proper classification for protecting the trees and suggested ‘environmental open space’ might be a tighter designation. “I suggest that piece of property should be preserved in the condition it’s in now,” said Asselstine. Councillor Sean McIntyre stated that “with intensification of people who are going to want to use it we need to be creative how we preserve it and ensure we still have an asset to residents on both sides. If there’s no parking, no maintenance it could be an unsightly area for trouble in the future. I do want to
preserve the land but I don’t want to create a space for people doing something we don’t want them doing.” As a result of the removal, that section will be back before council at a future date with more information from staff and it will have to go through the process of a public hearing allowing resi-
dents to comment on what might happen to the forested area. Randy Sieben, general manager of Lamont Land, the subdivision developer, said “we have no predetermined notion of what that park space will look like, we were asked to dedicate it (to the town).” He added that it
joins a similarly zoned park area in The Vista in Ryders Ridge subdivision being developed by Melcor immediately to the south, to create a large park area. He added there are “no immediate plans to remove any trees to that property”. Concerns from Regal Court residents that an R2 (medium

density residential) district was adjacent to their R1 (low density residential) district were negated by Mayor Susan Samson who said their area is “nicely buffered” by a public facility district. “Anybody living on Regal Court would not be able to see anybody in the R2 area.”

Nauticals short season completed; swimmers progressing towards goals by Coach Sharon Burns Special to Sylvan Lake News
Sylvan Lake Nauticals have completed their short course season. This was our busiest season ever! All of our swimmers had a great season. In Copper young swimmers learn basic skills from doing floats to sculling to kick. Paige Laitila and Merrick Smith started out not taking their feet off the bottom and can now swim short distances on their own. Alexa LaBelle is a lead-
er who helps others in this group with their skills. Kelsey Jones, Kate Hamilton, Ryann Clark and Solomon Fullerton are gaining confidence in all skills. Isabelle Fraser, Kamryn Girard and Liam Ewanchuk are swimming stronger every day and graduating from Copper are Celeste Gareau, Silas Price and Pierce Smith. In Bronze, swimmers must be able to swim a length of the pool and we work on basic strokes and endurance. Wylee Gareau and Zachary Brayden-Morris have
just joined us and are doing well with the group. Julia Turner, Theodore Rutherford, Carson Monroe, Jaykeb
Bouvette, Grayslyn Bouvette and Myles Bidinger-Badger have all increased their strength and skill.
Joshua St Germain, Chase Laitila, Travis Lorenze, Eve Smith and Isabella Pritchard are all starting to gain skill

Sylvan skiers placed well at Canadian Junior Nationals by Kim Cressey Special to Sylvan Lake News
Slip slidin’
- Competition was fierce, while collisions and spills were part of the game when sometimes sheer-footed broomball players took part in provincial championships at Sylvan Lake’s multiplex on the weekend. Friday night’s match-up between the Sylvan Lake Seamen (black) and Sylvan Lake Boatmen (white) was one of the games in the men’s intermediate category. The Boatmen won 5-0 and posted a 2-2 record while the Seamen were 0-3. The Boatmen went on to win silver following a defeat in the gold medal game by Edmonton Chaos. Edmonton Impact claimed the Men’s Elite championship and Edmonton claimed the women’s championship. Twelve teams competed in four pools with others coming from Calgary and Lethbridge. Sylvan Lake Lakers, competing in the exhibition pool, finished with a 1-1 record. STEVE DILLS

Three Central Alberta athletes were among 179 who competed in the Canadian Junior Nationals for freestyle skiing at Apex Mountain beginning Mar. 13. Training began for all four disciplines, Slopestyle, Single Moguls, Big Air and Dual Moguls. Dustin Cressey, a Grade 11 student at H. J. Cody, and his sister Bryana Cressey, a Grade 9 student at H. J. Cody, both train and ski with Winsport Academy out of Canada Olympic Park. Megan Cressey, a Grade 7 student at Fox Run School, competed as

well. She trains with Central Alberta Freestyle Ski Club based at Canyon Ski Hill. Thursday was the Slopestyle event and a lot of talent was present with
all of the competitors skiing hard. Bryana Cressey stomped her first run of the day. It was good enough to win the F3 category and win the female side overall.

However, Dustin and Megan struggled to get a clean run in. Saturday was the Big Air event, where skiers pick their choice of jumps and used only one trick to compete. Megan Cressey landed a big front flip to win the F4 category and third overall in the female division. Bryana Cressey landed a back flip to place third in the F3 division. Dustin Cressey landed a BIO 1080 and took second place in the M2 category. Alberta athletes dominated the podium in all four disciplines, it was exciting to watch the best of the under 19 year olds compete. Apex Freestyle Club hosted an excellent event!

Nauticals showed well by Pam Moore Special to Sylvan Lake News
Sylvan Lake Nauticals Swim Club started their long course swim season at the Olympian Swim Club’s Double Double Meet Mar. 9-10. The long course season consists of the swimmers competing in a 50m pool. At this meet the top 10 swimmers that competed in 100m events swam double that (200m) in the finals, making for a pretty tiring meet. Competing were Zoe DeJonge (9), Eden Price (9), Avery Burgar (10), Emily Girard (10), KoraLynn Juneau (10), Elizabeth Moore (11), Eliana Mulholand (11), Ann Duffy (14), Chase Murdoch (16). It was a great meet for all the swimmers. Zoe DeJonge competed in six races and earned a spot in the ‘Best of the Rest’ final in the 100m butterfly in which she had to swim a 200m butterfly race, placing third in her heat. Zoe also got seven personal best times and a meet qualifying time in the 400m freestyle. Eden Price also was on top of her game, swimming in four races and getting a personal best time in each of them. Avery Burgar competed in six races Saturday and earned six personal best times — she had a really good day. Emily Girard also competed in six races Saturday and had personal best time swims in each of them for a very successful weekend. Kora-Lynn Juneau swam in five races Saturday and then returned to join the team Sunday to swim the 400m freestyle race. She earned six personal bests as well. Elizabeth Moore swam in seven races and in her three 100m races she made finals. She placed first in the 200m breaststroke, second in the 200m butterfly and third in the 200m freestyle. Elizabeth also set ten club records and ten personal best times, during an amazing meet. Eliana Mulholand had a successful weekend, competing in five races and making it into ‘the Best of the Rest’ finals in two races. In the 200m breaststroke final she
came in first in her heat. Eliana also got a meet qualifying time during her 400m freestyle. Ann Duffy swam in six races and made in into the 200m backstroke final on Sunday. Shortly after that race Ann had to hit the water again for the 400m freestyle in which
she took off almost 11 seconds and achieved a meet qualifying time. Ann made five personal best swims. Chase Murdoch was our only male swimmer and he swam nine times over the weekend, three of those races in the finals. Chase placed sec-
ond in 200m freestyle final and third in 200m butterfly final. He also got eight personal best times, broke three club records and made two club records. Way to go team, keep up the good work in the rest of the long course season.

by Stuart Fullarton Increasing female participation in hockey is the aim of Hockey Alberta’s Try Hockey event, slated to be held in Sylvan Lake for the first time on Apr. 13. The event, which will run from 5 to 7 p.m. at Sylvan Lake Arena, is open to girls of any age from Sylvan Lake and surrounding communities, and will serve as an introduction to the game for those with no prior experience. “Female participation is probably underrepresented in comparison to the boys, and girls hockey is growing significantly,” said Don Goyan, who is part of a committee in Sylvan Lake set up specifically for the task of increasing the number of females in the sport. Upon being formed earlier this year, the committee began researching options for ways to grow the girls hockey program in Sylvan Lake. After learning of success in other communities with similar events, the committee approached Hockey Alberta representatives to discuss the possibility of hosting a one-day hockey event aimed specifically at girls. During the two-hour event, representatives from Hockey Alberta and Red Deer College Queens hockey team will teach girls hockey basics, before guiding them through a short game in which they will be able to test their newly obtained skills. According to Goyan, Hockey Alberta puts on its Try Hockey events at “virtually no cost” to the communities that participate in them. There is no registration fee,
and all equipment will be supplied at the arena. “They want to make it fun, and they want to make it enjoyable for the girls to get out there and just get a little taste of what it’s all about,” said Goyan. “There’s a lot of girls out there who are interested, but it’s a big cost outlay to get involved in hockey initially. This is an opportunity for them to get out, put some skates on and find out a little bit of what it’s all about. Hopefully they’ll realize how much fun it is and want to come back and start playing organized hockey.” Organizers are hoping to see girls attending not just from Sylvan Lake, but also from communities in the surrounding area. “That’s something we’re stressing,” said Goyan. “For those communities outside of Sylvan Lake that don’t have girls hockey, we’re more than happy to have them come out, and we want them to feel welcome.” The committee is considering several other initiatives to get girls involved in minor hockey, including the possible introduction of a ball hockey league for girls. Goyan said the league would likely begin in April and run through the spring. At press time, online registration for the Try Hockey event had not yet opened, but Goyan advised that more information would soon be available on Hockey Alberta’s website at www.hockeyalberta.ca. Further information about the event and girls hockey in Sylvan Lake may be obtained by emailing lakersfemalehockey@ gmail.com.
