By Jennifer Lang A slice of railway history is coming to life at the foot of 176A Street, where a faithful replica of the original B.C. Electric Railway station that acted as a bustling commuter passenger hub for decades is nearly complete. For carpenter Cole Hilton, working on Cloverdale Station is a dream assignment. “I wish I could get paid to do this all the time,” Hilton said last week. “It’s actual, traditional carpentry.” For the past week or so, he’s been installing wainscoting, laying down flooring and performing other woodworking tasks that match the

craftsmanship that went into the original, built around 1910 at the inception of the BCER’s Interurban passenger rail line. “The actual work that’s being done is what would have been done when it was being built,” he said, pausing to cut a section of flooring to size. “That’s what’s neat.” The Fraser Valley Heritage Railway Society has spent the past decade working to return an Interurban car to the original line. Inspired by the little moments An up-and-coming Cloverdale writer says her two kids are a source of material for her budding career By Jennifer Lang It would be difficult to dream of a more promising-sounding start to a professional writing career: a budding scribe submits her very first story, and it winds up getting published in the latest edition of a bestselling book series. But that’s exactly what happened to Ritu Shannon, a mom and writer who only recently got serious about her craft. Her story is featured in the latest edition of the publishing juggernaut Chicken Soup for the Soul: Parenthood edition that hit shelves a couple of weeks ago. “Big Sister” is one of 101 heartwarming tales about the joys – and challenges – of raising kids. The volume contains anecdotes and

stories about raising children of all ages. As with the previous installments of the Chicken Soup series, the book is meant to uplift, inspire and offer encouragement. Ritu’s story certainly does that. It centres around one of those cute little moments she shared with her kids – the kind she used to think she’d remember forever, until she sadly realized they would likely fade and be forgotten in time if she didn’t record them in some way. Originally from Victoria, where she graduated from the University of Victoria with a Bachelor of Commerce degree, Ritu lives in Cloverdale with her husband Jamie and their two children, daughter Priya, 5, and son Keegan, 3. She used to write all the time when she

was in school, but “I just sort of stopped,” says Ritu, who confides that her late grandfather is a famous novelist in India, so writing’s “in the blood.” The realization that she would eventually lose touch with the substance of those precious, day-to-day interactions with her young children as they grew up drove her to put pen to paper again. Inspiration struck after a long distance phone call to her mother in Victoria. “I’m really busy, and never have time to chat with my mom without the kids interrupting,” Ritu recalls. Her daughter, then aged three-and-ahalf, was sitting quietly by her side, her attention focused on her colouring book, See SUBMITTING STORY / Page 5

Family’s colorful campaign highlights serious message By Jennifer Lang This Tuesday, Cloverdale’s Julie Macchabee will be dressing in the colour blue, and she’ll be switching her family’s outdoor house lights blue to match. Pinning a colourful puzzle ribbon to her ensemble will be the final touch as the mother of two marks World Autism Awareness Day April 2 in a show of support for other families dealing with this disorder. The lapel ribbon symbolizes the complexity of autism while also representing hope for acceptance. Autism is a range of neurological disorders that affect the way a person interacts and communicates with others. It also affects how they make sense of the world around them. It’s four times more likely to occur in boys than girls. Julie’s son, Connor, who has autism, his older sister, Emma, and dad Dan are proud supporters of World Autism Awareness Day, too. “We make awareness posters as a family and will share ribbons with our school community of George Greenaway Elementary on April 2,” Julie says. Last year, the school held an assembly and walk for awareness. In stepping forward, Maccahabee hopes to foster support for the inclusion of people with autism in Cloverdale, whether it’s at school, in the workplace or out in

the community. Children with autism experience the world in distinct ways; many are sensitive to sights, sounds, smells and other stimuli, and can become easily overwhelmed on an outing, leading to screaming, spinning, or temper tantrums. She says supporting families living with autism can be as simple as understanding the challenges parents face, and by offering them a sympathetic smile as they work to correct those behaviours. She also wants to share positive news: many children with autism are able to make remarkable progress, especially if they receive intensive, individual instruction and therapy in the first few years of life. There are several behavioural red flags indicating a child may have autism, she says. If a child is failing to meet common developmental milestones, ask a pediatrician or a medical professional for an evaluation.

We’re overhearing some pretty interesting reactions to our Easter display. The hare on the left towers over the other two bunnies when she’s not posing for a photo. She’s mechanical. Plug her in, and she moves! Her insides have a unique pedigree: they were originally those of a mechanical figurine that was part of the Woodward’s Christmas window displays in downtown Vancouver. It was salvaged and refurbished by Cloverdale’s own Susie (Francis) Hall, a multi-faceted performer and creator of theatrical props, seamstress and more. She also designs and creates stuffed animals. Thanks, Susie!

Both big parties have betrayed us VICTORIA – There was some public business conducted in the final frantic days of the B.C. legislature session last week, but you likely wouldn’t have heard much about it. Premier Christy Clark’s skimpy governing agenda was overshadowed by the delivery of an internal investigation report into her government’s ethnic outreach program. A review by four deputy ministers detailed what reporters already knew from a memo and meeting notes leaked to the NDP. The plan started in the premier’s office, led by Clark’s deputy chief of staff, who resigned as soon as it was made public. A B.C. Liberal Party employee attended the first meeting, expressly intended to organize events to impress immigrant communities, then harvest the goodwill in the form of contact lists for the coming election campaign. After 10,000 e-mails were collected and 27 interviews conducted, they revealed a few significant details. Former multiculturalism min-

ister John Yap knew or should have known that the scheme was being kept secret because it was an inappropriate use of government resources. He won’t be back in cabinet, although Clark said he intends to run for re-election in Richmond-Steveston. Yap’s executive assistant resigned when the report came out, admitting he helped cover the tracks of political meddling in the hiring of three outreach contractors with sufficient loyalty to the party. Clark insists she knew nothing of this plan. She tabled the investigation report, and then announced that the B.C. Liberal Party had written a $70,000 cheque to the government to cover the estimated cost of the inappropriate political work done by non-political staff. Here’s the part taxpayers may not fully appreciate. There are authorized political staffers all over the legislature, in the premier’s office, the opposition leader’s office and two teams of caucus employ-

ees who spend much of their time digging up dirt on the other party. All are paid by you and me. A line is crossed only when a non-political employee such as a ministry communications director acts on behalf of the party. The main offender in that capacity was one Brian Bonney, whose records suggested he spent half of his time on party work. He quit in February, before the plan was leaked, and the party paid back half of his salary for the 18 months he was on the public payroll. NDP outrage over this was blunted by another leaked document. This one was from a never-released 2010 report by Auditor General John Doyle, which condemned a five-year program of skimming money from NDP constituency office budgets all over the province and using it for political work. In a nice bit of symmetry, much of the more than $400,000 was spent to put three-time candidate Gabriel Yiu on the NDP caucus payroll. Yiu’s Vancouver-Fraser-

Points of view

view candidate page boasts of his ethnic outreach work, which included tirelessly warning B.C.’s Chinese community about the evils of the harmonized sales tax. In fact, it was the NDP-Yiu operation that inspired a B.C. Liberal copycat plan. The NDP quietly stopped the budget skimming after Doyle pointed out the blindingly obvious, which is that constituency funds are to serve constituents and are not to be diverted to political organizing. It was kept under wraps by the secretive Legislative Assembly Management Committee. This is the B.C. Liberal-NDP co-managed trough of undocumented MLA expenses and other questionable payments that Doyle has only recently dragged into the light. Both of these schemes have the same stink. Both are intentional abuse of taxpayers’ money for the political gain of the dominant parties. There is no moral high ground for either of them.

Ritu declared she was finally ready to donate all of her baby toys and infant items to charity because – with two children – her family was complete. Her mother, however, was skeptical, and kept pressing. In mock frustration, Ritu turned to her daughter, asking her, “What do you think? Do you want another baby brother or sister?” Priya, who only heard one side of the conversation, burst out crying, thinking her brother Keegan was about to be replaced with a different baby, revealing the depth of her love for her brother. “Through the day-today mayhem of having two young children, you think, ‘Are these guys ever going to be friends?’” Ritu says. Afterwards, she thought: “I’m going to write a little story about it, that was really cute.’” So she typed it up, read it over, and showed it to her husband, who

Some installers may either set-up and install one piece or one row at a time. Instead, before you start banging the floors in place, set-up your entire room; don’t be picky. Find a home for every piece. You’ll be able to cut down on your stops and move pieces around to gain a specific look. The secret to successfully installing hardwood floors is planning and consistency.

dale Station, attracting 27 sponsors to the construction project, which broke ground in November. The station has been constructed using the original plans, and, once complete in a few weeks, will be as close to the original as possible. “The historical aspect of it is pretty huge,” Hilton said. “It’s not just building a train station, it’s actually building a train station that represents what was originally here. We’re not building a BC Transit bus stop.” Cloverdale’s newest heritage attraction is nearly ready to greet the first modern-day passengers to ride the Interurban in 60 years. Inside the station, a few concessions to modern safety standards have been necessary. Rather than a potbellied stove, heat is being provided by electric baseboard heaters, said FVHRS secretary Allen Aubert. Modern sensibilities have been accommodated, too. A foreboding freight door was scrapped in favour of another set of windows. And two tidy brick chimneys on the roof are accurate, but non-functioning. But otherwise, everything from the windows, doors, hinges and brackets right down to the paint colours, cream and red, are what they would have looked like in the original. “The paint colours have all been matched to their true, historic colours,” Aubert said. As with all of the construction and design components, the cost of the paint has been covered by a project sponsor. Twenty-seven sponsors have now climbed on board the Cloverdale Station project, providing materials, cash or labour. Their generosity has made it possible to add the so-called extras, from the cedar shingles and wooden siding to the single-hung sash windows, which are custom-made, double-glazed, and come courtesy of B.C. Hydro. Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s school of horticulture recently offered to design and install landscaping, the final piece of the puzzle. Inside, the station has two waiting rooms. One will be used as an overflow waiting area for passengers this summer, and in the winter, it will be used for heritage programming. The FVHRS is partnering with the Surrey Museum to create displays. The ticket wicket windows offer a 180 degree view onto the track, a spur line that joins the Southern Railway. In the station’s heyday, there was a steam train line along 176 Street in Cloverdale, Aubert says. “This town had three major rail lines. This wasn’t a rodeo town,” he smiled. “This was a railway town.” On June 22, the society will officially launch limited passenger service, running hourly, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., weekends to Thanksgiving. The trip from Cloverdale to Sullivan Station and return will last approximately 30 minutes. More than 100 new volunteers are being trained to work as conductors, operators, ticket masters and maintenance crew. The June launch is a month later than planned. There are still a few technical glitches to work out, Aubert said. The project is in partnership with the City of Surrey and the Southern Railway of B.C., with the assistance of B.C. Hydro. Animal rescue groups will be front and centre at Easter Fair Meet the “real” Easter bunny – and find out why adopting, not shopping, is the best way to find a new pet this Saturday at the Surrey Museum, hosting its annual spring crafts and Easter egg scavenger hunt. Originally conceived as a way to shed light on the problem of abandoned holiday pets, the Surrey Museum’s Easter Fair is a popular event for families and people of all ages. It runs from 1 to 4 p.m. Alison and George the Dancing Dog perform live in the Museum’s plaza at 2 p.m. For the past eight years, the Surrey Museum has celebrated Easter by focusing on the problem of unwanted pets. Every Easter, real pet bunnies find themselves cast off or neglected when their new owners realize they’re as much work as any other pet. The event has grown to include dogs, cats, reptiles, rodents and other critters.

“People should adopt instead of shop,” says Jennifer Kaiser of Without Borders Boxer Rescue. “There are far more homeless dogs than there are dogs in loving homes.” Kaiser says by adopting an animal from a shelter or rescue organization, you can save two lives, because it frees up a spot for another animal. This year there will be an array of animal rescue groups on hand, representing all creatures great and small, including the West Coast Society of the Protection and Conservation of Reptiles, AireCanada Airedale Rescue, Vancouver Orphan Kitten Rescue, Vancouver Rabbit Rescue Association, Greyhaven Exotic Bird Sanctuary, the Wildlife Rescue Association of B.C., the Canadian Disaster Animal Response Team, and Without Borders Boxer Rescue.

Gold digging and Central Otago paper trails

Adventures

NEW ZEALAND: Central Otago on the South Island was a magnet for me. Sprinkled with names like Clyde, Clutha, and Bannockburn from my Scottish childhood, combined with the lure of Ursula Maxwell-Lewis gold, the urge to explore the region was impossible to ignore. In 1862 two American prospectors struck gold on the mountainous banks of the Clutha River. Word spread like wildfire across the globe. Within a year, the gold rush was in full swing. As Steve Toyer, Clutha River Cruises

guide, historian and owner, navigates the Clutha River he highlights features of what – to my surprise – must surely be one of the world’s toughest mining terrains. Pastoral river banks soon give way to mountains of massive rocks in the stunning Roxburgh Gorge. The Clutha is wide, calmly majestic, and, like us, soaking up the warm summer sun. Pointing out Doctors and Butchers Points, Steve docks our speedboat and unloads our substantial picnic lunches. “The Chinese labourers were relegated to the shady (cold in the bitter winter) side of the Clutha,” says Steve, pointing to the chill unfriendly slate-coloured banks opposite – a contrast to the sunny glow on our side. Never have I stood among so many massive rocks, and so little soil and vegetation. Dwarfed by nature, we clamber over boulders, and up trails, investigating ruins of rock ‘houses’ built

by the miners. The river is dotted with such structures. Are the ghosts of long-gone prospectors still gazing optimistically from the timeless stone ‘shack’ windows embedded in the hills along Clutha’s meandering river bank?

I feel the isolation, the strange stark beauty. I try to imagine the hardships these men (and mules) battled vainly searching for wealth among these ancient weatherbeaten stones. We inspect a sluice, a steep mountainside irrigation-style ditch laboriously hollowed out to sift sediment, and – with luck – scoop the illusive gold. We try imagining the sounds of dredging when heavier equipment was hauled into the area – until the peak in 1902. Eventually the 103 companies dwindled away. Life receded to friendlier pastoral lands along other reaches of the Clutha and other nearby rivers…until the 1930s Depression produced another herd of hopefuls. But gold, if there was any more, remained buried. Descendants of the miners – and sheep – now populate the picturesque small towns scattered throughout the region. Stone fruit orchards now offer them more civilized lifestyles.

THE MOUSE ARM

By Christine Cheng, R.Ph., C.N.P.A. (C.C.N.M.) and Henry Cheng, M.B., B.S. (U.K.)., D.M.R.D., (Eng.), C.N.P.A. (C.C.N.M.) “Mouse Arm” is a newly coined term designating a group of musculo-skeletal problems of the forearm and hand resulting from keyboard use. Excessive and repetitive typing, clicking the “mouse”, punching smart phones all day, and playing musical instrumentals all may result in tendon and ligament strains. The resulting muscle spasm may affect nerve conduction and sensations giving rise to more pain. Computers have revolutionized all walks of life. It is estimated that two thirds of city folks use some type of computer on a daily basis. This includes those who work at the cash register, punching and scanning for a few hours a day and youngsters who cannot get their hands off their iPhones. I guarantee at least 10 percent of my readers have some form of the conditions that I am going to describe. The most common problem with repetitive keyboard use is tendonitis of the extensor tendons of the fingers. This is manifested by swelling, redness, and pain of the dorsum of the hand extending up the forearm. Many a time the flexors may also be affected because the extensors and flexors are synergistic groups of muscles meaning when the extensors work, the flexors have to tone up too. Anti-inflammatory agents like ibuprofen can control the pain but they are only symptomatic. Homeopathic medicine helps to accelerate the body’s own healing process. Arnica Montana, Ruta Graveolens, and Symphytum Officinalis heal the injured ligaments and tendons. Cuprum Metallicum helps to relieve the muscle spasm. Rhus Toxicodendron helps the rheumatism aspect of long standing injuries. All these can be found in the “Sprain Complex” that I had formulated.

3

suitable position for your arms and hands. This chronic effort may give rise to myofasciitis of the neck and shoulder. Repetitive hitting of the keyboard space bar or the iPhone keys with the thumb(s) may cause De Quervain Syndrome which is an inflammation of the tendon sheath of the extensor tendon of the thumb. The tendon sheath thickens so it squeezes onto the tendon inside, restricting the motion of the tendon and causing swelling and pain around the snuff box of the wrist. The “Sprain Complex” can be used for the tendon pathology in De Quervain Syndrome but the addition of Apis Mellifica may help to decrease the oedema (swelling) of the tendon sheath and relieve the restricted movement.

CHRISTINE CHENG

In carpal tunnel syndrome which affects the palm side of the wrist, there is an additional problem. Going through the narrow “carpal tunnel” are not just tendons and tendon sheathes. There are nerves. When the tendon and tendon sheaths are inflamed they swell up and push the nerves onto the bony wall. When the nerves are affected there will be numbness, tingling sensations, needles and pins, and loss of sensation in the thumb and fingers. To treat this condition, another homeopathic mixture for the nerves is required. “Peripheral Nerve Mix” contains Hypericum Perforaum,

years

When you work on the computer, your neck and shoulder muscles need to tense up to maintain a

DR. HENRY CHENG

Causticum, Magesia Phosphorica, and Tellurium Metallicum all in high potencies that help to revive normal sensation and relieve pain.

Repetitive typing also gives rise to osteo-arthritis of the small joints of the fingers. Maori Miracle® is the most effective for this kind of arthritis. It contains GlycoMarine which is a mixture of 9 different mucopolysaccharides (glycosaminoglycans) that help to lubricate the joint and repair lost cartilage. It also contains Kaola II which is a cartilage collagen that reinforces the action of the GlycoMarine. It also contains Myristin which is an immune moderating agent and White Willow Bark that is a time honoured anti-inflammatory herb.

Poor posture at the computer every day gives rise to degenerative arthritis of the neck and back. Timely periodic breaks during a computer session and proper wrist support cut down the risk of developing all the above conditions. Regular massage of the tendons and joints with a homeopathic ointment called “Zeel Compositum Ointment” can prevent and treat all these conditions. Stretching for the tendons and muscles after computer use will also prevent these diseases. Appropriate ergonomics of the work station, proper posture, and keyboard supports are other considerations to prevent “Mouse Arm”.

Pet Expert

Feeding wildlife can do more harm than good Lorie Chortyk

for the Cloverdale pet and the people who love them

Feeding wildlife may seem like an enjoyable way to connect with nature, but it can often lead to serious problems for species like squirrels, raccoons, deer and bears. Wild animals who get used to a handout will often take the easy route despite ample natural foods being available – even in urban areas. Although it might seem harmless and cute to feed a squirrel on a park bench or ducks at the local pond, these activities can lead to increased habituation. Fed wildlife can become dependent on unreliable food sources and suffer nutritionally when given inappropriate foods. Habituated wild animals are also more susceptible to predators and vehicle collisions, as they lose their fear of people and the associated flight response. In other cases, wild animals who have been fed regularly can develop foodseeking aggression and can become hostile towards people and pets.

Human carelessness can also lead to urban wildlife becoming habituated. Putting garbage out the evening before pick-up, using non-wildlifeproof bins, keeping pet food outside, leaving fallen fruit on the ground and littering can lead to situations where wild animals – and their offspring – are killed unnecessarily. One area where the experts disagree is on the feeding of migratory birds. Whether you agree or disagree with feeding birds, it is the most widespread and popular form of human-wildlife interaction worldwide. Although the BC SPCA prefers you to attract birds naturally with native plants, if you are going to feed migratory birds, please: • Ensure feeders are not accessible to other species, use baffles and “proof” feeders; • Keep cats indoors and ask your neighbours to do so as well;

• Clean feeders regularly with a 10% bleach dilution to prevent disease outbreaks; • Feed only seasonally when natural resources are limited; • Consult your local bird feed or nature store to determine the right feed for the season and the species; • Place feeders in protected areas, out of the rain, snow and wind; • Place feeders as far away from windows as possible. If it must be near a window, place it less than one metre away and use UV window decals to prevent injury; • Don’t ground feed, and clean spilled seeds frequently to avoid attracting rodents;

I decide to trade history for relaxing in vineyards From page 9

Sailing back up the Clutha after leaving the digs, we head for land, and a road trip to Old Cromwell, a reconstructed lakeside historical village site overlooking Cornish Point near Lake Dunstan. A cemetery recording families claimed by typhoid dating back to 1873, stolid stone churches, a Masonic Lodge, and other assorted buildings turn out to be worth visiting. I head for the Cromwell Argus building to discover that a newspaper war erupted in November 1896. The Cromwell Guardian started publishing on November 1. The Cromwell Argus retaliated on November 3. The Argus won, publishing a broadsheet by 1881, and survived until assorted area newspaper amalgamation in 1948. It is still published as an advertising news-sheet.

Reading the Argus masthead, I’m delighted. One of the editors is a Munro. I think of my uncles, George, a Fleet Street editor, and Hugh, author of the detective series, “Who Told Clutha.” I smile. I wonder if we had an Otago editor in the family, too. Now, it’s onward to ride some scenic heritage rail, explore more Central Otago villages…and sample the excellent regional Reislings and Pino Noirs. I decide to trade gold digging and history for relaxing in the beauty of local vineyards and orchards. Each travelling unearths their own treasures differently. Ka kite ano! Narrow miss for local curling pair By Jennifer Lang A local pair of juvenile curlers came so close to making the playoffs at the recent Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Trials. Team B.C., Tyler Tardi, 14, and Desaray Hawes, 16, were in an eight-way tie for the last four playoff spots, with a record of 4-3, according to Curl BC. It came down to the cumulative draw to the button. Dezaray and Tyler missed the playoffs by a mere 19.7 cm and finished 13th out of 32 teams. The team was one of three B.C. teams taking part in the inaugural event, held in Leduc, Alberta. According to Tyler’s mom Anita, the team had a couple of opportunities to make it into the playoff round, but it just wasn’t meant to be. In their sixth game of the tournament, they had a chance for a hit for 4 in the 5th,

but the shot just rubbed the guard, which changed the momentum of the game and their competition stole one, instead of Team BC taking 4, Anita said. During round robin play, they beat former World Bronze Medalist Sean Grassie and his partner Karen Klein and half of the 2012 Canadian Mixed Champions – Jason and Colleen Ackerman. Anita said Dezaray, of the Royal City Curling Club, and Tyler, of the Langley Curling Club and Lord Tweedsmuir Panther’s boys curling team, represented B.C. so well and proudly wore the provincial flag on their backs. “They showed maturity beyond their years both on and off the ice and impressed many at the event,” she said. “They are already talking about next year and coming back to defend their B.C. title!”

Got pennies? They may not be worth much to you – or the Royal Canadian Mint, which has stopped making or circulating the one-cent piece – but each penny has the power to save lives and create hope. That’s the message of the Fleetwood Gogos chapter, which is collecting pennies to support African women who are caring for grandchildren who have been orphaned by AIDS. The members of the Ubuntu Ogogo group are working on behalf of the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign to help turn the tide of the ravages of HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. The foundation funds grassroots projects in African communities that provide grandmothers and orphaned children with social and psychological support, microcredit loans, school fees and uniforms, shelter and activities, from community gardens to poultry, pig and goat rearing.
