Sarah Le Huray knew what was wrong with her even before her doctor was able to give her a diagnosis. Staring at the black and white MRI image of her brain flickering on the computer monitor as she awaited her doctor’s arrival, Le Huray recognized the white blotches scattered across her brain. She understood their significance. After all, she worked with brain scans for seven years as a medical researcher in the neurology department at the

University of British Columbia. Le Huray had multiple sclerosis. Her self-diagnosis though, didn’t make her doctor’s confirmation a few moments later any easier to take. “It hit me pretty hard,” says Le Huray, 33. It also explained the sudden loss of vision in her right eye months earlier while she was on vacation in England, as well as the occasional hearing loss in one ear, the sudden loss of coordination and fine motor skills that could last from a couple of days to a couple of weeks, and

the numbness and tingling in her left foot. Le Huray’s area of expertise was Alzheimers, but the team of researchers working on MS was just down the hall. She knew many of the neurologists, saw them every day. She couldn’t help but be struck by the irony of her affliction. As her way to cope, she sought knowledge from her colleagues. “It calms me to know exactly what’s going on,” says Le Huray. “I have this background and right off the bat I have all this information at my fingertips and people to connect

with.” But the reality of her situation brings little comfort. “The scary part of MS is that it doesn’t go away, it’s permanent,” says Le Huray of the chronic neurological disease that afflicts 55-75,000 Canadians, most of them young adults between the ages of 15 and 40. “It makes me worried about my future.” And for her two young children, who know their mom has to take medicine but can’t understand when she’s too fatigued to play with them. please see MS WaLk, a3

Burnaby school district is adopting a two-week spring break starting next year, the school board decided at its meeting Tuesday. The board approved the change as a oneyear pilot project because it’s a matter of matching the calendars of other Metro Vancouver districts and that’s as far ahead as they go, explained Burnaby district superintendent Kevin Kaardal. In 2014, the official spring break in Burnaby will be March 17 to 21, followed by a schools closure period of March 24 to 28, Kaardal said. Burnaby had been one of only two Metro Vancouver municipalities to still have a one-week break along with New Westminster, which also approved the two-week vacation period on Tuesday. “The primary benefit in terms of looking at this is savings,” said Kaardal, noting about $250,000 will be saved in energy costs and not having to hire substitute teachers. please see SavINgS, a3

Untreated Hearing Loss Affects Baby Boomers Still in the Workforce.

E

rnest Hemingway once said, “Retirement is the ugliest word in the language” and in today's society, it is true. Many baby boomers may yearn for retirement, but uncertain finances and healthcare have influenced the need to stay in the workforce longer.

It has been reported that the percentage of workers between the ages of 65 to 74 is expected to increase by 83.4 percent from 2006 to 2016. But as boomers stay in the workforce longer, untreated hearing loss may sap their incomes and employment. Research reported by the Better Hearing Institute demonstrated that the use of hearing aids reduces the risk of losing income by 90 to 100 percent for those with mild hearing loss and 65 to 77 for those with moderate to severe hearing loss. Those with moderate to severe hearing loss who use aids are twice as likely to be employed as their peers who do not use. The verdict seems clear. Boomers with hearing problems “can continue doing their jobs at a satisfactory level if they do obtain hearing aids,” said Robyn Cox, PhD, a professor of audiology at the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Memphis. Then why are baby boomers not having routine hearing checks and, if they do have hearing loss, use hearing aids? Dr. Cox said she believes the problem is innate in current medical care. “Routine hearing checks are not part of the culture,” she said. “We get all types of checks but neglect our hearing. We have not taught people to realize that hearing needs to be checked.” Hearing aid use expectedly suffers when Individuals do not receive hearing checks. “Many don't know they have hearing problems,” Dr. Cox said. “Many do, and don't know what to do about it. We have made it difficult to Figure out.” An effort needs to be made to get baby boomers focused on their hearing, which will not only change the culture surrounding hearing healthcare, but also urge employers, health insurance companies, and primary care physicians to focus on hearing loss. “We haven't produced evidence for who needs to get hearing screenings, so we haven't encouraged people to do it,” Dr. Cox said. “Primary care physicians don't think about hearing care, and health insurance companies don't include hearing checks as preventive measures. When you go get your physical, a doctor should ask about your hearing and maybe, if you are a certain age, require you to get a hearing test.” Most of the damage has already been done to baby boomers' hearing but, that does not mean it cannot be addressed. The best advice is to be proactive in obtaining hearing healthcare, Dr. Cox said. “People frequently notice hearing problems numerous years before they seek help,” she said. “There is reason to think that the longer they wait, the more difficult it is to make up the ground that gets lost.

In general, it would be nice if as people age they would pay attention to their hearing needs just as much as vision needs.”

New Heights chocolate shop victim of break-in Thieves steal $25K in equipment Wanda Chow

wchow@burnabynewsleader.com

Just two weeks after opening for business, a new chocolate shop in Burnaby’s Heights neighbourhood has been hit by thieves. Chez Christophe Chocolaterie Patisserie at 4712 Hastings St. was broken into sometime between 8 p.m. Monday, when co-owner Christophe Bonzon left for the night, and 5 a.m. Tuesday, when he returned the next morning. Bonzon believes the incident might have happened after 10 p.m. as there were cars in the parkade before that whose owners would have noticed the culprits. After all, they stole some pretty heavy equipment. Bonzon estimates it would have taken an organized effort, “two or three people at least,” to make off with

the equipment, some of which weighed upwards of 400 pounds. “I’m pretty sure they knew what they wanted,” said Bonzon on Tuesday afternoon. Thankfully, he and his wife, Jessica, are insured. He estimated the value of the stolen items at roughly $25,000. The challenge is in replacing the specialized equipment, much of which was imported from Europe or shipped from Montreal, including that used to melt chocolate, laminate dough and make croissants. “It’s pretty essential equipment.” Bonzon figures it will be a week before he knows how long it will take to get replacements. The theft comes just before one of the busiest times of the year for chocolate sales, Easter. The crooks even took a special order of chocolate Easter bunnies he was preparing for a customer, Bonzon said. “That’s pretty bad.” He has no idea who might have

been responsible. “It’s hard to believe because we put so much effort to create this place and after just two weeks.” Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Dave Reid said there were no signs of forced entry, and the rear door was found propped open with a mop. But as in show business, the

couple vows to carry on the best they can. They opened a few hours late on Tuesday, to allow Burnaby RCMP officers to do their work at the scene, but otherwise it’ll be business as usual. “We will continue to operate but we might not be able to carry the full range. We are trying

The savings will help offset the district’s expected shortfall, which early estimates pegged at about $6.6 million. Kaardal said from a management perspective, the two-week break will also help in recruiting staff since it’s seen as a potential benefit. “If we were the only ones with a one-week break then that’s a recruiting impediment.” Families where parents live or work in municipalities with different break schedules as their children attending Burnaby schools will also benefit from the common calendar, he said.

The move followed a consultation process in which 67 per cent of the more than 4,100 community members who completed a survey supported the change. Of the more than 1,600 district employees who filled out the survey, 89 per cent wanted to see the change, he said. The main challenges cited by survey respondents were issues around providing childcare—both finding space and its affordability— for children whose parents will have to continue to work through the break. “We are committed to working with our partners in the community,

we have community schools and with parks and rec, to see what programs can be expanded, supported to mitigate that as much as possible,” Kaardal said. “From the board perspective we are pleased we are able to go in sync with the other communities and we feel our survey did give us enough support to move forward in this direction,” said school board chair Baljinder Narang. “We can now actively look at supporting the families who need any support from us.”

our best to still deliver the same quality and the same product, but we might scale it down a little bit.” Bonzon has been heartened by the support of the community. With his knives also stolen, someone who came to lend a hand loaned him a knife. And a customer has loaned them her own Kitchenaid mixer in the meantime. “People have been very kind, saying, ‘what can we do?’” Bonzon said the first two weeks since opening were very positive. He asks only that the community continue to support his business and have patience with their limitations until they can get back on track. “That would be the best thing that could happen.” Chez Christophe Chocolaterie Patisserie is open Tuesdays to Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Info: 604-428-4200 or http://www. christophe-chocolat.com/.

Burnaby’s Byrne Creek secondary has a problem with litter, so a group of students has taken the matter into their own hands. The Byrne Creek Sustainability Council’s efforts are summarized in a video entered into the B.C. Green Games, an annual environmental action competition organized by Science World. The group of 10 to 20 students spent a week last November collecting litter at the school. Most of it was found indoors on the floor, in classrooms and left behind on tables in the school atrium where students eat their lunches. In all, they collected 16 kilograms of litter, only about 28 per cent of it garbage destined for the landfill or incinerator. The rest was paper, recyclables or items that could be composted. Co-chair of the group, Zahra Haq, 17, said what was most surprising was how much of the garbage was made up of nonrecyclable packaging. Haq, a Grade 11 student, noted that the amount of litter has increased in recent years since a 7-Eleven, Starbucks and other such businesses have opened nearby. In trying to find a solution, the sustainability council plans to approach the businesses to see if they could offer small discounts for students who use their own mugs and food containers. The group is also trying to raise money to purchase a water bottle for every Byrne Creek

student after noticing that the school’s two bottle-filling water fountains are well-used but many still buy bottled water, which adds to the litter and garbage. But the current priority is educating fellow students on using the garbage bins and properly sorting their waste. “It’s really hard for high school students to change their habits to sort garbage,” Haq said, adding the group plans to start giving presentations on the issue to students at nearby Stride elementary to “start the good habits young.” Byrne Creek, like other district high schools, doesn’t have garbage cans in classrooms to encourage greater use of recycling bins located in the hallways. That’s led students to often leave their garbage behind on desks. The sustainability council’s education efforts have included a “Price Is Right” type of event, where students are asked to guess how much and what type of litter was collected, and improvements to the sorting system for recyclables.

Sustainability council co-chair Nhi Nguyen, 16, said she understands the difficulty some students have with sorting garbage. “When I first came to Byrne Creek in Grade 8 it was confusing at first,” said the Grade 11 student. “It’s a process of education for students.” The council’s sponsor teacher, Judy Fujiki, called the student group “very dedicated” and said the litter situation has improved since they’ve highlighted it to the rest of the school. Schools entering the Green Games are vying for a share of $24,000 in cash prizes to support environmental action projects. Winners will be chosen by a panel of judges and the number of online votes received. Other Burnaby schools that have entered include Burnaby Mountain and Burnaby South secondaries, and Cascade Heights and Seaforth elementaries. Deadline for online voting for entries is March 31. MLA, city decry sale of land BC Housing says city didn’t want more social housing on the site Wanda Chow

Burnaby-Edmonds New Democrat MLA Raj Chouhan is furious that BC Housing is selling a property in his riding that he says should be used for building much-needed affordable housing. The property, 7898 18th Ave., is a vacant lot and sits beside Liberty Place, a 20-unit assisted living complex for young adults with disabilities which opened in 2008. “That could be used to build affordable housing for people who are in big need, who have been waiting for months and months,” said Chouhan, who noted the bulk of the casework his constituency office does is related to the shortage of such housing. ADRIAN RAESIDE:

QUESTION OF THE WEEK:

TransLink 3.0? A mad scientist couldn’t have come up with an odder creation than TransLink. And a new consultant’s report paid for by the Mayor’s Council on Regional Transportation seems to agree. Recognizing the fact that TransLink is essentially a provincial creation responsible for overseeing regional priorities yet beset with funding woes and lack of accountability, the report suggests numerous reform options. None appear to be ideal. Critics say it’s time for a change but what changes are necessary? Former transportation minister Kevin Falcon thought he solved the problem when he took priority-setting responsibilities away from the mayors and gave them to a professional board. But that hasn’t worked the way it was hoped. There’s never enough money for transportation priorities so the mayors always seem to be going cap-in-hand to the province, only to be told to look under the couch for spare change or pare down the priorities. TransLink’s mayors’ council has only enough power to be a ready scapegoat for the province. Thus, when big decisions are made — say, building the new Port Mann Bridge or choosing the transit technology for the Evergreen LIne — they’re made by the province, leaving the mayors and the TransLink board responsible for unpopular actions such as cutting bus routes or hiking property taxes. One idea would be to create a democratically elected Metro Vancouver land-planning board with responsibility for setting transportation priorities as well as budgets — replacing both the Metro Van board and the TransLink mayors’ council. Voters might yawn at the idea but something has to be done about TransLink and the stringpulling provincial government — whether BC Liberal or NDP — has to do it. —Black Press

Being led down the garden path For years it seemed Canada, or at the very least B.C., might be a leader in reducing carbon and helping to slow the progress of climate change. The government of B.C. introduced a carbon tax, and everywhere you turned people had found religion, incrementally changing their lives and habits to address the concerns about a warming planet. Hybrid cars, more recycling, driving less, eating less meat— everyone, including industry was pitching in. Then the economy tanked in 2008 and since then, fear has become the dominant narrative. Where before we might have feared destroying the planet, now it’s fear we’ll be out of a job. And it’s fertile ground for major carbon-polluting projects to get a green light. In recent years we’ve been inundated with carbon-intensive projects that are supposedly good for our economy. And as that narrative of fear states, when we fight against them we’re only hurting ourselves.

Chris Bryan editor@burnabynewsleader.com

So we’re urged to support Enbridge’s Northern Gateway pipeline, which would ship oil across the B.C. wilderness from the oil sands. And Kinder Morgan’s plan to twin its pipeline so we can ship raw crude to China from Burnaby—tar sands oil that is, by the way, like sputum from a smoker’s lung. And when the U.S. wants to ship coal from Wyoming by train to Surrey Fraser Docks so it can put it on a boat to China, we’re urged to be good British Columbians and shout “bring it on!” But many of us harbour strong doubts about the way this is going. And we’re pretty sure this isn’t the only route to a vibrant economy. In fact, we suspect, contributing to global warming

could have devastating impact on the global economy. There’s another common narrative used to stifle opposition that I’ll call the Borg effect, which suggests resistance is futile. This argument states that since Canada is such an insignificant country, whatever we do makes no difference. China will undo any of our progress anyway. And besides, if we don’t ship our coal to them someone else will. Mark Jaccard has a good response to that. This month, the climate scientist, Nobel laureate and research fellow at the C.D. Howe Institute wrote in Walrus magazine, and addressed those who say if Canada contributes only two per cent to global emissions, why should we bother making an effort until everybody joins in. “Yet every year on Remembrance Day,” Jaccard wrote, “Stephen Harper extols our critical role in confronting Nazi Germany’s global threat. He fails to mention we actually contributed less than two per

cent of the Allied effort to World War II… Even though we were only two per cent of the solution, we have something to be proud of. We punched above our weight by joining France and England in declaring war on Germany in 1939, without knowing if and when the USSR and US would join the cause. We did not wait for everyone to act simultaneously against a global threat, which is virtually impossible, but instead showed leadership. If we were to show leadership on climate change, we would join forces with California, Europe, Australia and Japan. As the effort snowballed, we would use trade measures, if necessary, to bring other countries along.” Jaccard’s right. It’s time for us to lead. Every time we allow a new oil pipeline, or make it easier for a coal train to move its goods, we enable the carbon intensive economy that’s heating the planet. We’re no longer leading. We’re being led down a garden path.

It’s time for housing to be a key issue in B.C. Dear Hon. Christy Clark, With the 2013 provincial election quickly approaching, promises will be made, hands will be shaken, dozens of inspiring speeches about how you’ll make “Family first” BC a thriving province will be delivered, and maybe even a few baby’s foreheads will be pecked. As I read through the BC Liberal’s website, under the “What We Believe” page, I see nothing that addresses the thousands of people who live in extreme poverty in the Lower Mainland, let alone the rest of the province. How is it that so many people go unseen in your vision for a better B.C. when you drive past them every day on your way to work? My uncle Clint has lived on and off of the streets for the past 20 or so years. He struggles with addiction and mental illness and I used to be terrified of him. Clint was the man that asked people for money at the corner of a busy downtown street, the one who read excerpts of the Bible from the staircase in the heart of downtown Vancouver, and is kind to most everyone he meets. He was the person that many have tried to avert their gaze from, or the reason they quickened their pace, or maybe even openly mocked him or told him to “get a job.”

When people do this, I don’t think they realize how dehumanizing their actions, or rather, inactions, are. Fortunately, since being housed by Raincity Housing in 2010, he has been doing much better for himself. He is one among many success stories, and I only want to hear of more and more. It is time the issue of inadequate and costly housing became urgent in B.C., no matter the political party. Without a proper B.C.-wide plan in place to eradicate homelessness, or even a sufficient financial backing for local organizations doing their part to help, how is the goal of getting people off of the streets or loved-one’s couches and properly housed tangible? Good, affordable housing is essential for positive economic growth. When people have a stable place to live, only then will we see families thrive and see our communities flourish unlike ever before—and isn’t that what the Liberals want? Ms. Clark, though we are a diverse community of people, we all have the same basic needs; among hope, health care, clothing and food, there is housing. I envision a B.C. in which all members of our community have access to sufficient and affordable

housing, income and support. Allison Graham Grade 12 Cariboo Hill Secondary

BANNING FIREWORKS NOT THE ANSWER Re: Fireworks could be off the shelves (NewsLeader, March 22) I read your article on the proposed ban on the sale of fireworks and some of your points were bang on. However, the danger of banning legal “family fireworks” will lead to many of our youth creating their own explosives. All somebody needs to do is Google “homemade fireworks” and there are numerous videos showing how this can be done. I know there is a significant danger of something going dramatically wrong in this type of scenario. The vast majority of people that enjoy fireworks on Halloween are families with children. I remember growing up and all the neighborhood children would gather to view a show put on by the parents after a night of trick or treating. I understand the frustration some people have with some aspects of “family fireworks,” but banning them is not the answer. Peter Nigro Burnaby

ICBC also contributed to an upgraded crosswalk with pedestrian control signals at

Jordan noted that the property would have appreciated significantly in value through the rezoning and the increases in the market in the seven years since. “Now it’s going off for market housing rather than some other kind of needed social housing which is supposed to be the mandate of the housing corporation, it’s not about being a land speculator.” She said council will likely consider whether to try and buy the property for the city at its next council meeting. Housing Minister Rich Coleman said in an emailed statement that it was Burnaby that didn’t want social housing on that site. “We welcome housing proposals

Evaluation of the grant program concluded that for every dollar invested, there is a return of five times the

And two years after a project is implemented, on average there is a 20 per cent reduction in severe crashes and a 12 per cent reduction in property damage crashes. “Road improvements deliver real value to everyone on our roads, from drivers to pedestrians,” said John Dickinson, ICBC’s director of road safety, in a press release. “We’ll continue to invest in road safety initiatives that help us reduce claims costs to keep rates as low as possible for our customers.” newsroom@burnabynewsleader.com

As a result, the remaining lot was targeted to be sold and developed as market housing.” The provincial government’s housing projects in Burnaby over the past two years have included two assisted living developments for seniors and people with disabilities, housing for elder women at risk of homelessness and renovations to family housing at Hillside Gardens, he said. twitter.com/WandaChow

Home invasion, twice at one location A Burnaby man appears to be having a string of bad luck after being the victim of two home invasions last week. Both incidents happened at night, one at around 10 p.m. and the other at about 11 p.m., and at the same address in the 6600-block of Imperial Street, said Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Dave Reid. In each case, two to three suspects used weapons to get inside. One of the residents is known to police and was assaulted during both incidents. He was not seriously injured. Burnaby RCMP believe the home is being targeted. “Nobody else is at risk,” Reid stressed. There is no marijuana grow-operation involved. Area residents are being asked to report any unusual or suspicious activity to Burnaby RCMP at 604-294-7922.

Most Lower Mainland residents are willing to pony up more money for TransLink, but they’re split on exactly what kind of new tax, fee or toll should be imposed. That’s the result of a new online poll conducted by Insights West. It found 72 per cent of respondents support new funding sources for the troubled transportation authority, which needs billions of dollars to launch rapid transit expansions and maintain the existing system. About half of those supporters want new cash sources balanced with some service cuts as well, while just 12 per cent opposed any new funding and say TransLink should simply make cuts. “I am shocked at the number of people who are actually open to new funding options,” Insights West president Steve

Mossop said, adding the results undercut the perception of near-universal public opposition to more money for TransLink. “They’re not particularly happy with the options in front of them on how they’re to be charged, but that’s pretty common when you’re talking about taxation.” Those polled were asked if they support raising existing transit fares, property taxes or fuel taxes, or adding new tools like a vehicle levy, a regional carbon tax, new road or bridge tolls, or a dedicated regional sales tax recently proposed by mayors. The option that scored best with 37 per cent support was raising transit fares, although backing was lopsided, with regular transit users strongly opposed. But a close and “surprising” second, according to Mossop, was road and bridge tolls, with 36 per cent support and a much more balanced response from

Auto Insurance Agents Not Just A Job … A Career A Team A Future

both frequent and infrequent transit users. Mossop said he believes initial anger about the tolling of the Port Mann Bridge is fading fast as drivers get used to the new reality. And he said the results give more ammunition to Metro Vancouver mayors, who want the province to allow comprehensive road pricing – adding small road tolls everywhere instead of just tolling certain bridges. The option with the third most support was an annual vehicle levy, at 33 per cent, followed by a regional carbon tax at 26 per cent. The most unpopular source is the mayors’ proposal to add a new sales tax within Metro Vancouver of up to 0.5 per cent – 79 per cent of those polled opposed that idea. Also unpopular is any increase in property taxes or the gas tax, with opposition at 75 per cent and 74 per cent respectively. The poll surveyed 838 Metro Vancouver and Fraser Valley adults in early March. For details, www.insightswest.com.

These patterns are repeated in order to create a wallpaper design, which inserts nature’s design into the domestic landscape.” And when Culver isn’t busy making art? “When it’s canning season that consumes all my spare time,” she says. “My Grandma taught me how to preserve peaches when I was young. Cressey selling second development with amenities on penthouse level

Top-floor amenity space a new trend Traditionally, the topmost floors of a high-rise are set aside for the penthouses, allowing those with a larger budget to purchase the best views in the building. Cressey is giving that view to all of its residents by placing two floors of amenities space on the top floors of its upcoming MThree development. “MThree will be the tallest building in Coquitlam at 48 storeys,” says Cressey’s Hani Lammam. “You can see ocean essentially.” The top two floors of the building will be made almost entirely of glass, and will hold a fitness facility, musical practice rooms, lounge and outdoor barbecue space, among other things.

There will still be penthouse-style homes in the development. Cressey has tried this experiment before, at their recent Southeast False Creek development, James. “It was wildly successful,” Lammam says. “People can host parties and gatherings in the space. It gives them a bit more space to entertain.” James also includes an outdoor space, secure children’s play area and community garden plots on its roof. “This kind of space draws people there,” Lammam says. For more information about MThree, visit www.liveatmthree.com or call 604-472-9555.

Life on the river

Riverfront living at Richmond’s Parc Riviera By Kerry Vital

Richmond is known as the Island City By Nature, and nowhere is this more evident than at Parc Riviera, in scenic North Richmond. “This is a waterfront location with a ton of green space,” says sales and marketing director Dave Bauman. “The dyke trail is right in your front yard.” Along with the dyke, there is five acres of park and green space right in Parc Riviera, as well as family picnic areas and playgrounds for the kids. There is also a large clubhouse on-site with a lap pool, hot tub, fitness centre, lounge and a 5,500-square-foot daycare facility. There are plans in the works for a restaurant and retail space in the future. “People love the life on the river,” Bauman says. “It’s hard to beat that.” In order to maximize the views from every home, the buildings will be constructed in a stepped design from four to six storeys.

bridge, Bauman says. This makes for an easy commute for those working outside of Richmond. The Vancouver International Airport is easily accessible, as well as the Knight Street bridge and East-West Connector/Highway 91. Shopping is less than five minutes away, along with dining and elementary and secondary education at one of Richmond’s excellent schools. If you’re in the mood for some exercise beyond the dyke, the Richmond Olympic Oval and Cambie Community Centre are just minutes away by car. “This is a master-planned community that offers a great value,” Bauman says. The first phase is currently selling. Homes start at the mid-$200,000s for a condo and low $400,000s for a townhome. For more information, visit www.parcriviera.com or call 604-231-5900.

This is a master-planned community that offers a great value,” says sales and marketing director Dave Bauman.

The two- and three-bedroom homes in a range of condominium and townhome floorplans are spacious and open, with nine-foot ceilings and chic hardwood flooring throughout the living and dining areas. There will be outdoor space for every home, including an oversized balcony with granite tile flooring. The modern kitchens feature quartz countertops complemented by a glass tile backsplash, under-cabinet LED lighting and stainless-steel appliances, including a gas cooktop. Select homes will include a convenient breakfast bar as well. The bathrooms are luxurious and relaxing, with their own quartz countertops and a full-height imported porcelain shower surround with polished accents. A soaker tub from Maax is also included in the bathroom, along with large-format imported porcelain tile flooring. Parc Riviera will be located just two minutes from the Oak Street

Submitted photos

Parc Riviera is currently selling its first phase, encompassing more than 200 homes. Eventually, the development will hold over 1,000 homes in a range of condominium and townhome floorplans.

There are so many eyes on Tina Palazzo she can’t help but keep her own eyes on the prize. Striving for her health and fitness goals in the very public forum of the Kin’s Green Fighters Challenge has focused her in a way no previous diet and exercise regime has, says Palazzo. “Doing this challenge in the public eye means that I need to be accountable,” says Palazzo. Especially as she’s also meshing her fitness program with raising funds and awareness for the Canadian Cancer Society. “I am hoping I will be able to make a difference to the community and people’s lives,” says Palazzo, who lost one of her best friends to cancer last year.
