Seniors, stop worrying about your pocketbooks. by Kathleen Thomas For many seniors, there are common concerns about lifestyle as they age. Many wonder how they will manage their own homes in their older years or what kind of personal care they might be able to afford. For seniors on a limited income, these concerns can be especially pressing as limited resources tend to mean fewer options. Fortunately, a new model of retirement living is helping to alleviate those fears. Retirement living communities across the country are working with provincial, federal and local authorities to make seniors of all income levels equally welcome in their facilities. In Kimberley, Garden View Village has made a commitment to low-income seniors a priority. Garden View Village is a well-crafted seniors’ community boasting beautiful suites ranging from studios to one and two bedroom layouts. These maintenance-free living suites incorporate supportive features to promote independence and 24-hour emergency monitoring service for added peace of mind. Kitchens include a fridge and stove and each suite is equipped with its own personal heat and air conditioning controls. Beyond the suite is access to a variety of common areas which include a games room, spa room, library, dining room, cof-
fee room, crafts room, hair salon and lounges. All areas are easily accessible, full of interesting people, engaging activities and share a wonderful sense of community. Rents for allotted low income suites start as low as $500 per month at Garden View Village and include weekly housekeeping, a wide selection of recreational and social activities, 24 hour emergency monitoring, shuttle bus service, and hot, delicious meals prepared by on-site chefs. Each meal is served by cheerful wait staff in a central dining room, with a cozy fireplace where guests and families are always welcome. In addition to the hospitality services, residents can enjoy peace of mind knowing they don’t have to worry about extra bills because all utilities including water, sewer, heat, air conditioning and cable are also included. Garden View Village is within walking distance of the beautiful Cominco Gardens and is a five minute drive to the shops, restaurants and services in the Platzl, as well as to the town’s medical clinic. The region provides many recreational opportunities, including award-winning golf courses, beautiful nature parks and world-class resorts. For more information you can call Garden View Village at 250427-4014 or visit goldenlife.ca
Area located approximately 20 kilometres southwest of Kimberley. It was learned that a group of seven snowmobilers had an avalanche come down on them, after which one person was unaccounted for. Rescue efforts continued throughout the day Saturday with Golden Search and Rescue attending with a second helicopter and avalanche technicians. The conditions were too dangerous for an immediate search and efforts were made to stabilize the remaining snow load. Searching continued until the light failed and the search was called off for the night. Early on Sunday, March 24th rescuers continued their search and called in more resources from Fernie; Creston; Invermere; Sparwood and Elkford Search and Rescue groups. In addition, approximately 30 local volunteers showed up at the staging area ready to help and were ferried into the search zone by helicopter. As many as 30 SAR, RCMP and civilian volunteers were utilized in the search area on Sunday with more waiting at the staging area. Approximately 70 people; two helicopters; two avalanche dogs and one police dog, were involved in the combined search effort. The search continued until 1 p.m. when the body of the missing snowmobiler was located under the snow, dug out and removed from the mountain. The RCMP would like to remind any back country enthusiasts to make yourself aware of avalanche and weather condition for their area and to ensure that they check current avalanche conditions.

3 Facts you need to Know About... Selenium from Coal Mining... 1. Selenium is a metal that is showing up in the waters of our rivers, is harmful at certain concentrations, and is linked to coal mining. However, selenium was not even measured for decades while coal was mined here by many different companies. 2. Teck Coal has committed to spending billions over the long term on a valleywide plan to stabilize selenium levels and reverse the trend. It will take huge investment in water treatment facilities and cannot happen overnight. 3. Teck employs 4,000 people at high wages and benefits dozens of small businesses and hundreds of families. Government policy must include and respect that reality. Teck must be allowed to continue accessing the coal needed to keep people employed.

The Cranbrook and District Restorative Justice Society has received a $45,000 Community Gaming Grant from the B.C. government. “We are very appreciative of MLA Bill Bennett’s ongoing support. Without it, we would have a very difficult time continuing our programming,” said Debbie McPhee, Co-Chair, Cranbrook and District Restorative Justice Society. Across British Columbia, 294 recipients will share $6,272,130 in the latest round of grants. “I am a strong believer in the approach taken by restorative justice groups, particularly as it relates to young offenders. Allowing a young person the opportunity to face up to their mistake and allowing an opportunity for restoration and understanding, is a far superior approach compared to simply taking that young person to court and possibly exposing first time offend-

Deer not welcome!
We were dog-sitting for friends over spring break. One night, we were all spending a quiet evening, sitting in front of the fireplace, dogs sleeping peacefully, when suddenly our guest dog perked up his ears, fixed his gaze to the back door across the room and sent out a low warning growl. That brought our own dog to attention, and soon both were at the glass door, growling at something out in the twilight. When we checked, all we saw was brown, spindly legs walking at the top of the bank. Our deer warning system obviously works. When we first built our house at the edge of the Cranbrook Community Forest, our main focus was getting roof and siding on, the inside somewhat finished and livable. Landscaping was an afterthought, so the frequent visits from the resident deer herd didn’t really bother us too much. But when our newly planted dogwoods were completely chewed off one morning and the pretty plum trees had bite marks on them as well, we knew that fencing the property had to be a priority. Fencing is the only way to keep deer completely out of yard and garden. Especially if deer have already sampled your plants and made your garden a regular stop on their feeding tour, your fence has to be high enough to keep the animals from jumping it. It also has to be secured tightly, with no openings for deer to wiggle their way back in. Some people leave their driveway open, but even a twelve-inch gap in a fence can be room enough for determined deer to squeeze through. If they cannot find a way around or through, they might look for a way to get under. Partially burying your fence or pegging it to the ground can keep deer from trying to wriggle beneath. You need to understand deer and their physical limitations when you look at your fencing options. Any healthy deer can clear a five foot tall fence without even trying. Most can vault six to seven feet, and some can even get over an eight foot barrier. So while adding considerable visual appeal, a wavy cedar fence with an average height of five feet will not be enough to keep deer out. Deer can also take wide spans in stride. They have been observed clearing streams over twelve feet wide. One limitation deer do have is that they cannot perform a high jump and a wide jump at the same time. The landing site can be another factor that can influence their decision whether to jump or not to jump. Deer want to avoid injury, so they like to see where they are going to land and be sure they can touch down in a reasonably safe way. This fear actually plays in our favour. Our yard is fairly steep and although we have opted to go with a six foot high wire fence and deer can see the temptation on the other side, they have not risked a jump with the landing site being a steep slope. Depending on the area you want to fence, the amount of deer you have already had on your property, your taste and your budget, there are many fencing options available. You can go with deer netting around individual plants or a smaller garden area. Wire or chain link lends itself for fencing larger properties and if the fence is also used for privacy, you might prefer wood. If you want to build a fence to keep deer out, it should be at least six feet tall, either a slanted fence using a combination of height and width or a tall solid fence to obscure sight, making deer unsure of a safe landing. And, of course, it must be impenetrable. Using a deer repellant, such as Bobbex, around your property can add further insurance. If you build a fence before your property even becomes a regular feeding stop, it also increases the effectiveness. With a fence and our warning system in place, I hope that brown, spindly legs walking by is all I see of deer in the yard this season. Till next time... happy gardening. Submitted by Kerstin

The Kootenay Atom ICE finished off their season last weekend with a tourney in Calgary. The ICE played 3 games in the round robin racking up 2 wins and a loss. Kootenay played Springfield in their first game and found themselves down 6-0 after one period. The ICE would out score Springfield the next two periods 4-2 but would lose the game 8-4. This would turn out to be a good wake up for the ICE as they went undefeated for the remainder of the tourney. The ICE went on to beat Midapore and Simons Valley in round robin play setting up a final against Simons Valley. Kootenay would have a strong outing beating Simons Valley 8-4 for the win and championship.

Best described as a number crossword, the task in Kakuro is to fill all of the empty squares, using numbers 1 to 9, so the sum of each horizontal block equals the number to its left, and the sum of each vertical block equals the number on its top. No number may be used in the same block more than once.
