Coroners service identifies avalanche victim The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the identity of a man who died in an avalanche near Kimberley on March 23, 2013. The man was Joel Conway, aged 38, of Kimberley. Mr. Conway was one of a group of seven snowmobilers who had travelled to the area of Hellroaring Creek southwest of Kimberley on a memorial run for another Kimberley resident who died in an avalanche in the same area four years earlier. While the group was in the area, a large ava-
lanche struck, burying two of the men. One man managed to dig himself out, but Mr. Conway was buried too deeply for self-rescue or for the other members of the party to be able to rescue him. They sought help, and a major search- and-rescue effort was launched. Mr. Conway’s body was recovered from the area on March 24. The BC Coroners Service and RCMP continue to investigate this death. The family of Mr. Conway has been notified. On behalf of the
family, the BC Coroners Service asks that the media respect their privacy at this difficult time. The BC Coroners Service notes that the Canadian Avalanche Centre continues to list the avalanche risk as “considerable” to “high” in many parts of the province and urges all backcountry users to take extreme care, including checking the Canadian Avalanche Centre website for current conditions in B.C.

Norwegian Gold Ultra EPA SALE PRICE $29.89 SAVE $4.00! Ultra EPA delivers 1000 mg of EPA per capsule making it the strongest EPA fish oil on the market. EPA is especially effective at lowering inflammation throughout the body as well as lowering triglycerides. Ultra EPA is formulated to supply the Omega 3 fatty acid EPA which is often deficient in the Canadian diet. It works to promote heart health, protect the cardiovascular system and helps to reduce inflammation. Ultra EPA contains the Omega 3 fatty acid EPA from cold water fish, which is an essential fatty acids (EFA). The body cannot produce EFA’s, so they must be ingested from food sources such as cold water fish. The Canadian diet is often deficient in EFA’s, so it is vital for your health to ensure adequate intake through supplementation. EFA’s have many functions within the body, EPA in particular has been shown in studies to be effective for a number of different conditions including Asthma, Arthritis, Depression and Heart Disease. Depending on your diet, Ultra EPA can have varying effects. Consuming EFA’s on a daily basis can help balance the body and improve the symptoms of conditions such as: high cholesterol, cardiovascular concerns, arthritis and inflammation, constipation, dry skin, hair and nails, weight issues (both weight gain and weight loss), weak immunity and autoimmune disorders, poor memory and concentration, fatigue, PMS and hormonal imbalances, digestive difficulties and leaky gut, insulin resistance and blood sugar imbalances. EFA’s can also elevate your mood and improve recovery time after exercising.

All-Inclusive European River Cruises
Every day, perfectly good horses are shipped to the slaughterhouse simply because they aren’t wanted by their owners anymore. Last summer, I was fortunate enough to save one of these horses through JM Acres Rescue Ranch in Maple Ridge, BC. Rio has become a great friend and will live a good life here in Kootenay Country. These volunteer rescue organizations work on shoestring budgets and depend primarily on donations and adoption fees to stay afloat. As anyone with horses knows, it’s not cheap to own these critters, but they give us so much in return. Since it’s inception in 1995, JM Acres has rescued and adopted out over 600 horses. So far this year, they are averaging between 5 and 10 horses a month! This May, I will be participating in the annual Bloomsday Run in Spokane, Washington. It’s a 12.4 km event, and with an average of over 50,000 runners and walkers, it is one of the biggest in North Ameri-

Submitted Wildsight is launching the Clean Bin Project in Cranbrook, kicking off in April. The challenge for Cranbrook residents is to reduce their waste as much as possible for the month of May. Local Skye McDougall is the brand new Sustainability Coordinator for Wildsight in Cranbrook and her first job will be to help Cranbrook meet that challenge. “The goal of the Clean Bin Project is to tackle the serious issue of waste reduction,” said McDougall. “We can do this by raising awareness and demonstrating how reducing waste can be do-able and easy.” The Clean Bin Project, which will run through the month of May, is a one month challenge where participants strive to reduce their garbage production. When the challenge ran in Kimberley, some Clean Binners managed to fit all their garbage for an entire month in a single bread bag! The Clean Bin project started out in Van-
couver, when a young couple challenged themselves to live consumer and waste-free for a year. They stopped buying “stuff”, and committed to reduce packaging whenever they could. Their motto: less stuff coming in (the house) means less stuff going out. The couple did what they set out to do, had a lot of fun, and then made a film about it, The Clean Bin Project. Wildsight will be showing the film on April 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the COTR lecture theatre to kick of the project. McDougall is hoping to inspire some healthy community competition and fun by encouraging viewers to join the Cranbrook month-long challenge taking place in May. Elementary students will already be paving the way at week-long challenges in Cranbrook elementary schools in April. Participants will be able to share their experiences on Facebook: Cranbrook Clean Bin Project, and anyone can follow the challenge and learn strategies to
become waste-free at the same time! Introduction to composting workshops will be held on Earth Day weekend, which will help participants start composting to remove even more waste from their trash. The Regional District will be offering subsidized composters to early workshop registrants. On Earth Day, April 22, Wildsight will host a launch party for the Clean Bin project where participants can meet and mingle with other challengers. Some of the Kimberley challenge participants will join in to show off their tiny bags of garbage. Learn more and register for the challenge at Wildsight.ca/CleanBin. The first step for participants is to see the Clean Bin Project film on April 11, 7:30 p.m. in the lecture theatre at COTR. Admissions is by donation. Wildsight gratefully acknowledges the financial support for the Cranbrook Clean Bin Project from by Columbia Basin Trust. This project was undertaken with the financial supEK PROOF 2012/13 port of the Government of Canada through the Please initial Federal DateDepartment of the Environment.

Victoria is a long way from the East Kootenay, both in distance and in culture. Sometimes it seems that the things we value in rural BC aren’t priorities in the Lower Mainland. That’s why we need an MLA who is strong, passionate and knows how to get things done. Bill hikes, hunts, fishes, quads, snowmobiles, skis and golfs. Bill Bennett understands outdoor issues and shares our values here in the East Kootenay and he’s proven he’ll stand up for them.

IN Memory William Andres. January 18 1941-April 4 2011. Little did we know that morning God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone. For part of us went with you, the day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide. And though we cannot see you, you are always by our side. Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same. But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again. Sadly Missed, forever in our hearts. Your Loving Family
