Your guide to fishing in B.C.
with Don
British Columbia freshwater fishing enthusiasts have a new, up-to-date tool in their tackle box. The B.C. Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations and Black Press have produced the 2013-2015 Freshwater Fishing Regulations Synopsis. The Synopsis is printed every two years as a resource for local and visiting fishers to have on hand as they enjoy B.C.’s lakes and rivers. An electronic version will also be updated periodically if regulations change. In addition, the synopsis will also be featured in a flip book format on the websites of all Black Press newspapers in B.C. Inside, in addition to the most current freshwater fishing regulations, readers will find details about the popular Family Fishing Weekend, an annual event scheduled for Father’s Day weekend. Timed to coincide with the licence-free weekends offered by both the federal and provincial governments, weekend events are organized in nearly 50 communities with help from the Family Fishing Society of BC.

It was a pleasure to get back on the water and start fishing for trout in the Campbell River area. The trout were not surfacing but using a sinking line on the fly rod I was able to troll a fly and get hits all day. Trout Echo lake fishes well and is usually one of the first lakes that anglers will get on first as it’s a short drive west of Campbell River. A couple of smaller lakes are located on the backside and using chironomids fished off the bottom can get pan size trout. At the same location a number of humming birds will be close to your fishing spot. A lake that is also in the area and holds a number of small trout is Snakehead. Anglers who w have been on the hunt for halibut have had h good go catches reported around re Kelsey Bay, last K year ye at this time a number of halibut nu were coming in w between 30 and b 50 pounds. Many of the th local anglers have ha been getting out and t libu ge Kelly Wheeler - 70 Lb. Ha salmon fishing Nootka Sound 2011 has been good with 18 and 19 pound fish coming in. John Drewitt from London England is back fishing the Gold River. Last year he managed to beach 9 fish in 1 week. A good concentration of anglers will be on the Salmon River. Now is the time to get boats and fishing gear ready for another fishing season. On the saltwater look out for stumps that can cause a lot of damage to boats. A number of fishing resorts are in preparation of opening for the season and in a few weeks I will have a good idea of opening dates and conditions for lodges that offer fishing trips in the area.

Once-emaciated owl set free in farm field Erin Haluschak Black Press
Reg Westcott of the Mountainaire Avian Rescue Society prepares to release an owl after it spent two months in care at the rescue and rehabilitation facility in Merville. Photo by Erin Haluschak
COMOX — It was a fitting send-off for the spring season — an owl took its first flight in two months last Tuesday as the final patient in care at MARS, while the organization prepares for its upcoming season. The baby white owl was released under the watchful eye of his caregivers at the Mountainaire Avian Rescue Society (MARS) in a farm field off Comox Avenue. “He was sighted by a person who came to view swans in the Comox Bay ... and noticed the little owl was hiding beneath a tree covered in mud and feces from the swans,”
said Reg Westcott of MARS. “(The owl) got contaminated with some mud and could no longer fly or bathe himself. He was essentially so skinny that he needed rescue so maybe the best thing that could have happened to him is that he got covered in mud in a place where people could see him.” Westcott said he suspects the owl was born last year in the Arctic. It required care every hour, for 24 hours a day to nurse the emaciated bird back to health. “We didn’t have any medical intervention to do with him, but he was at a level of starvation where he couldn’t just be fed. He needed to be kept alive essentially on an elementary diet, very similar to an emaciated
human or a human that is being kept alive by a tube,” Westcott added. He suspects the food supply in the Arctic was strong, but by the time winter arrived and baby owls had to find their own territory and migrate to find food, it left the birds in a vulnerable situation. “So if you left the Arctic on an empty stomach and fly 3,000 or so miles and you get here and all the food looks wrong to you ... and you’re already weak and in a strange land, so it’s very hard when they travel this far,” he said. MARS manager Maj Birch explained although they don’t have any wildlife patients currently in care, they will use time to clean, paint and get

ready for the baby bird season. “In May we can expect to see baby birds ... ducklings, robins (babies) starting to nest. Owlets have already hatched and eagles have been incubating eggs,” she noted. The organization is also preparing for its open house April 7, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. when the public is invited to view the facilities, talk to members and learn about volunteering. Two weeks later, MARS will host its second annual Walk for Wildlife at the Courtenay Airpark. For more information on the events or the organization, visit www.wingtips.org or search for MARS on Facebook.

Easter Eggstravaganza holds much promise Black press PORT McNEILL—A big turnout and flawless execution at the debut Easter Eggstravaganza celebration Saturday bolstered the hopes of a local volunteer group to host more such events at the local community theatre in the future. The event, thrown together by Sequoia Coe and Opal Tesch of the Gate House Community Association, drew more than 50 youngsters to Gate House Community Theatre for an Easteregg hunt, crafts, cookie decorating, prize contests and even an impromptu viewing of a baby chick hatched just that morning. “Hopefully this can be an annual event,” said Coe. “And, now that we know what we’re doing, we’d like to do more of these, for

Photo by J.R. Rardon other holidays.” The Eggstravaganza was part of recent push for more community involvement at the theatre, which is operated by the non-
profit Gate House Society and which last month was granted charitable status by the Canadian Revenue Agency. Just weeks before
receiving word of the charitable status — which will allow the society to apply for grants and other aid — the association held a membership drive that
drew in new volunteers like Coe and Tesch. “Hopefully, we’ll get a little more volunteer help for the next one,” Coe admitted with a laugh. “Basically, Opal
and I did all the work setting it up. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it went really well. We had a good turnout, considering the long weekend.” The pair also baked and donated all the sugar cookies for the cookie-decorating table, and Coe was particularly pleased that there were enough cookies, Easter treats and other prizes to go around. The event kicked off with the Easter egg hunt in the seats and aisles of the theatre, with sections segregated by age group. Youngsters then took their turns at decorating cookies or creating Easter-theme decorations at two different craft tables. There were also contests, like guessing the number of jellybeans in a jar, that netted additional prizes. The theatre has a busy month

coming up. Society director Terry Ruth Eissfeldt will produce her self-written play, The Coffee Clutch, this weekend, with shows at 7 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. In preparation for the production, volunteers have been renovating the stage area, which was backed only by a movie screen and huge, ancient curtains, to convert it into a more usable facility for live theatre. The following weekend the society will hold the second in a series of free youth art workshops. The first weekend of May, Gate House will host the annual Port McNeill appearance by Missoula Children’s Theatre, which will audition local youth for a performance of The Secret Garden. Planned gifts mark memories in BC Parks British Columbians have a special way to leave a legacy for future generations through BC Parks’ Planned Giving program. The Planned Giving program provides a simple way for interested British Columbians to include provincial parks in their estate planning and makes gifting cash, financial securities or land easy. Donors identify a cause close to their hearts, making the donation a personal legacy for future generations of park visitors to enjoy. Examples include trail development, education programs or support for conservation efforts in specific parks.
British Columbians can plan to leave a legacy for future generations through BC Parks Planned Giving program. For instance, one BC Parks’ donor, who prefers to remain anonymous, has decided he wants to leave part of his legacy in Garibaldi Provincial Park. First introduced to the park in 1966,
he still visits it every few years. In the case of this generous individual, he has donated over $200,000 in financial securities over three years that will be used to upgrade the Mamquam Lake

trail and install foot bridges. This project will be completed and ready for park visitors to enjoy this summer. Although BC Parks is a government organization, a special account was created
in 2008, separate from the provincial government’s revenue fund, called the Park Enhancement Fund. The Park Enhancement Fund is a transparent account where individuals and businesses can make donations - small or large - to specific parks and/or specific projects that enhance our provincial parks or the services offered in them, like the Mamquam Lake trail upgrade. Donating money through BC Parks’ Planned Giving program reduces the tax and capital gains burden for individuals and donations of $25 or more are eligible for an official tax receipt. “British Columbia’s provincial parks are some of our most

Renowned physician endorses glutathione-boosting product In my ongoing quest to enlighten the general public on effective ways of increasing intracellular glutathione levels, I’d like to introduce you to an American physician named Dr. Don Colbert. Not only is Dr. Colbert the medical director of the Divine Health and Wellness Centre in Orlando, FL, he’s also a boardcertified integrative medicine practitioner who wholeheartedly endorses Max

In his book Toxic Relief, for example, Dr. Colbert discusses glutathione accelerator supplements and, specifically, Max International’s Cellgevity product: “Cellgevity is the most powerful anti-aging, antiinflammatory supplement that I’ve ever experienced,” he

There’s a fabulously beautiful archipelago of islands, narrow passages and deep inlets backed by mountains that’s secreted away from most of us. The Museum at Campbell River and Mothership Adventures have teamed up to offer a lucky few a three day/ four night journey through the Discovery Islands, Desolation Sound and up Bute Inlet from May 31 to June 4. They promise an unforgettable experience aboard the historic Columbia III, guided by historian and author Jeanette Taylor. The trip includes daily shore excursions for short hikes to old homesteads and archaeological sites. “This is an active program, says Taylor. “We take a small group of not more than ten on these trips, which allows us to get out and explore.
The tour starts in Campbell River and wends through a circuitous route among the narrow channels of the Discovery Islands, with stops at places like Maud Island to view the site of the Ripple Rock blast, Desolation Sound Marine Park, Read, Maurelle and Sonora Islands, Bute Inlet and Mitlenatch Island, a bird sanctuary.
Every one of these destinations is memorable, says Taylor, but Bute Inlet is especially grand. It’s a very long inlet, piercing deep into the Coast Mountains, with snow-capped mountains that are among the highest in the province. Weather allowing, the group will go by zodiac into both the Southgate and Homathko River
estuaries at the head of the inlet. Taylor, whose book Tidal Passages, a History of the Discovery Islands, was on the BC Best Seller list for nearly a year, will share a wealth of tales about the intriguing characters who once lived in these isolated places. Though the region is now all but deserted, there were once many First Nations villages,
followed homesteads and logging and fishing camps. The impeccably-restored Columbia IIII is the perfect vessel for a historic sites tour of this region. She was built to serve here over 50 years ago, one of the last in the Columbia Coast Mission’s fleet, bringing medical service to remote settlements. “It’s like a homecoming when we stop at places like the old store and post office at Refuge Cove aboard the Columbia III, says Taylor. Organizers recommend you book soon as only five spots remain for this trip aboard the 68-foot Columbia III, at an all inclusive price of $1,740 per person, plus GST. For further information visit www. mothershipadventures. com or www. crmuseum.ca, or call 1-888-833-8887 to register.
The Columbia III is an impeccably-restored former Coast Mission medical service vessel whose owners have teamed up with the Museum at Campbell River to offer historical and natural tours of local waters.

Tyee Club lands dock money from feds Laet month, John Duncan, Member of Parliament for Vancouver Island North, on behalf of Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support for the Tyee Club of British Columbia under the Harper Government’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF). “Our Government
is continuing to support communities across Canada by investing in important local infrastructure,” said MP Duncan. “Today’s announcement is another example of how the federal government is committed to supporting growth and community spirit while creating jobs and longterm prosperity in Campbell River.” The Harper Government’s
investment of $40,300 will enhance the services provided by the Tyee Club of British Columbia. With the funding provided, the club will upgrade the row boat dock to ensure compliance with environmental standards. Improvements to the dock include building new pull ups for boats, removing outdated wharves, and upgrading the system that secures floats to
pilings. “Since 1924, when the Tyee Club was formed, anglers from around the world have come to the waters at the mouth of the Campbell River to fish for Chinook salmon under rules and regulations designed to promote quality over quantity” said Sharon Fisher, President of the Tyee Club of British Columbia. “In almost 90 years, we have overcome many challenges and today,
overcoming our most recent challenge, a home for the unique, historical rowboats that are essential to the sustainability of this significant, economic resource, has been assured, thanks to funding from the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund.” In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across
the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities. Since 2006, the
Harper Government, through WD, has invested in jobcreating small- and mediumsized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
B.C. families pay less at the pharmacy starting April 1 British Columbians will soon notice they are paying less for many of the generic prescription drugs they need for their health. Starting April 1, a new drug pricing regulation will reduce the price of generic drugs to 25 per cent of

the brand name price, from the current rate of 35 per cent of the brand name price. The price will further drop to 20 per cent in April 2014. “Thanks to this regulation, B.C. families will pay less at the till when they
fill their prescriptions. These price reductions will also save money for the provincial government - money that can be used instead to help enhance patient care in B.C.’s health system,” said Health Minister Margaret
MacDiarmid. The drug price regulation is the first in a suite of regulations required to fully implement the Pharmaceutical Services Act, which came into force in May 2012. The act shifts B.C.’s PharmaCare
program from relying on government policy, to being protected by legislation. The regulation allows the Minister of Health to regulate the price of prescription drugs. Generic drugs have the same quality, strength, purity and
stability as their brand name equivalents and are made to the same strict standards. “Reducing the price of generic drugs benefits our clients by making prescription drugs more affordable for families and employer insurance
plans,” said Kenneth G. Martin, president and CEO of Pacific Blue Cross. “We support this regulation, as it brings B.C. in line with other Canadian jurisdictions and helps ensure fair and consistent pricing.”
