Hosting 70 local artists, the second incarnation of the Lab Art Show will showcase a variety of original artwork, including an installation by Owen Wong, photographs by Jens Kristian Balle, paintings by Thibault Sendra (pictured) and body art by Natacha Trottier. Short films from both the Vancouver Latino American Film Festival and internationally awarded Vancouver Film School students will be presented, as well as the spring/summer collection of designer Dominique Hanke; all in concert with music by saxophonist Jen Charters with DJ Daniyah Angel, and soul/ funk group, The Ponderosas. Proceeds from the show will be donated to Homes Huichol — a charitable institution in Jalisco, Mexico, that provides accommodation to ailing Aboriginal Peoples. In addition to supporting this charity, Lab Art Show 2 will be showcasing artwork by Mexican Aboriginals. “We are not only celebrating art, but featuring local talented artists who may otherwise have a limited outlet to showcase their work,” says show creator Gloria Bernal. Times of India awards Bollywood fans from around the world have been eagerly anticipating the upcoming Times of India Film Awards, and the inaugural event has given fans yet another reason to be excited — three of the most entertaining stars in Bollywood (Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Boman Irani) are hosting the extravagant awards ceremony in celebration of Hindi Cinema on April 6 at BC Place. The awards promise to be a night of entertainment and glamour like Vancouver has never seen before, with show-stopping performances and Bollywood’s biggest celebrities, such as Hindi film superstars Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan. One of the most celebrated couples of Bollywood, Aishwarya and Abhishek will spend a number of days in BC attending TOIFA celebrations. The April 6 awards nights will be Aishwarya’s first international performance since the couple had their first child almost a year and a half ago. World-class attraction coming to Vancouver That trip to Disneyland might need to wait another year. FlyOver Canada, a spectacular new visitor attraction that takes guests on a soaring aerial journey from coast to coast, is opening this spring at Canada Place. Located in the former IMAX theatre, the $16-million, 30-minute experience (the first of its kind in Canada), will lift groups of up to 60 guests at time in front of a large custom, spherical screen, where they will move in concert to a film of the most stunning bird’s-eye vistas of Canada. The immersive effect will be complete with the addition of ‘4D’ wind, scent, mist and sound elements. Nearly three years in the making, the project is the result of a partnership involving Stephen Geddes and Andrew Strang, and the Aquilini Investment Group – owners of the Vancouver Canucks. Spring’s vitamin C: colour With the sun comes some Vancouver styles to brighten up our wardrobe By Taraneh Ghajar Jerven

s the city springs into blossom, Vancouver designers have got your style needs covered. Put aside drab raincoats and black wardrobe staples. This season, it’s all about colour. From bold brights, to pretty pastels, and pop accessories, here are three easy ways to wear the spring 2013 colour palette.

Bright Out Head-to-toe brights are the look of the season. What should be your favorite colour? According to Pantone, the world colour trend expert, it’s all about emerald green. Going by the runway, you’ll also want to integrate cobalt blue and citrus yellow. Even raincoats have gone bright. Shake off the winter doldrums with Allison Wonderland’s spring 2013 Mcintosh ($248) in jade. Fittingly, Vancouver designer Allison Smith was inspired to design the coat during a spring walk in the park. Plum Boutique has a feminine, lemon yellow dress with a peplum waist ($129) in their Simone collection this season. Plum’s Simone line is designed and manufactured in Vancouver.

Pretty Pastels If you prefer pastels to primary colours, take your inspiration from Vancouver’s 40,000 cherry trees and opt for pale pinks. Aritzia’s Lelia Dress ($145) is perfectly blossom. Too girly? Move on to light mints, grayed jade and dusky blues. Vancouver label Dace has useful mint green separates including the above-the-knee scamp skirt ($180) and flirty bambi shorts ($140) in cotton. Even lululemon’s neon workout gear — Power Y Tanks ($52) and the Street to Studio jacket ($98) — has faded into parfait pink, bleached coral and mellow lemon. When it comes to bags, Vancouver-designed Herschel Supply Co.’s heritage rucksacks and totes now come in vibrant cobalt, purple, teal and daffodil this season.

Pop Accessories The easiest way to add a pop of spring colour, without investing big bucks in the head-to-toe trend, is to update your accessories. Vancouver designer Mona Sultan’s spring 2013 silk chiffon scarf collection ($175 each) features gorgeous color-blocking in rose, teal, royal blue and citrus yellow. Wrap a bright print scarf around your neck to transform a neutral outfit into a statement. Alternatively, be brave and wear it bandana-style.

inda Poole is on her cherry blossom-emblazoned smartphone asking the City of Vancouver to fix the Burrard Bridge banners that came loose during a storm. Rain is the biggest obstacle for the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival founder. Rain and fundraising. In its ninth year, however, you wouldn’t know it to see the packed festival lineup. This spring heralds the biggest festival thus far. In 2005, VCBF consisted of a photo contest and a taiko drummer. This year, a barrage of events run the month of April, including the Cherry Jam street party, Sakura Days Japan Fair, the World Umbrella Dance, Bike the Blossoms and a balloon haiku installation at Burrard Station. “Cherry blossoms are universally loved,” says Poole, a former cultural attache who was inspired to start VCBF after learning about Japan’s sakura (blossom) celebrations. VCBF not only showcases the 800 cherry trees Japan gave to Vancouver, it also celebrates 40,000 trees spread throughout Vancouver and the diverse set of people who helped plant them. “We have over 1,000 addresses telling you where to go see cherry trees on Google Maps. There’s also a photo and the time it blooms,” explains Poole, who credits her tireless Cherry Scouts for the intel. Festival-organized bike rides and blossom walks

will help festival goers find the pretty pockets of pink and learn their history. The 2013 festivities also benefit from a hearty dose of Vancouver multiculturalism. International celebrity Shiamak Davar — known for revolutionizing Bollywood dance with a confluence of East-meets-West — has choreographed the popular World Umbrella Dance flash mob, taking place April 13 on the Vancouver Art Gallery steps. “I wanted a sexy choreographer. But I thought Shiamak is too big of a star,” says Poole. “He’s been on Oprah; he’s opened for Sting.” Davar, however, was keen (and he’ll be in Vancouver as part of the Times of India Film Awards this week.) “I love being a part of it,” he shares. “The people in Vancouver are so warm. Hundreds of them coming together for the Cherry Blossom Festival is testimony to their ability to embrace various cultures.” Davar has choreographed the moves to his new hit “Shabop,” meaning “to dance without worry.” Both Davar and Poole aim to beat the 2011 record of 550 flash mob participants. The Japanese taiko drum group, Tetsu Taiko, will accompany “Shabop”. Poole’s secondary motivation for launching the World Umbrella Dance was solving her rain dilemma. The performance integrates an eye-catching prop: pop art umbrellas designed by Anthony Redpath, a renowned Vancouver conceptual artist. The umbrellas are for sale ($24.99) at VanDusen Botanical Garden and Urban Tea Merchant.

Sakura Days: A festival within a festival

or her highly anticipated turn at the helm of Arctic Air, sci-fi icon Amanda Tapping was tasked with wrangling a dragon. And not just any dragon: Tapping directed David Chilton, author of Canada’s all-time best-selling book (The Wealthy Barber) and the newest investor on CBC’s Dragon’s Den, in the penultimate episode of the second season of Arctic Air (April 10). Chilton’s appearance on the hit CBC drama wasn’t the result of any network-dictated cross-promotion. “I asked,” said Chilton in a recent phone interview. “I love Arctic Air.” Chilton has but one previous acting credit to his name. “I played the undertaker in Oliver! when I was in Grade 12, and I was told that it was one of the worst performances ever given,” he said. Thus, Chilton made sure he brought his A-game to Arctic Air — even though the role wasn’t too far out of his range. “I was method acting myself,” said Chilton of his cameo appearance, which is set

Angus An’s new venture Where does he find the energy? don’t think it’s a coincidence that it’s been almost two straight weeks of sun since I tasted the new releases from British Columbia’s JoieFarm winery — that annual tasting is always the first sign of spring in my world. Owned and operated by former Vancouverites Heidi Noble and Michael Dinn (with Robert Thielicke assisting in both the vineyards and winery), JoieFarm has been a critical and commercial darling around town for nine years now. Not only do the wines offer fantastic value and express the Okanagan’s sunny, mineral-rich terroir with crisp acidity and grace, but the whole line-up pairs well with the way we eat in this part of the world. The 2012 vintage is an excellent one overall in BC. All of the wines here can be ordered direct from the winery (JoieFarm.com) at the prices below, but tack on couple bucks when shopping in local stores.

JoieFarm 2012 Unoaked Chardonnay | $22.90 There’s a nice weight to this year’s edition, perhaps a wee bit heavier than those in the past. It’s just that we’re talking about flavour characteristics that the particular grape carries. I bring this up now, because there are so many ripe, juicy pears in this wine that you might think they’re an ingredient! This is certainly a dry and crisp Riesling, but we’re talking the most juicy and charming of Bosc, Bartlett and Asian pears around. Lovely.

Sappy sci-fi romance finds a groove THE HOST

Starring Saoirse Ronan, Max Irons Directed by Andrew Niccol When you see a movie based on a Stephenie Meyer novel, there’s a good chance it will bear several hallmarks of a specific genre — a moody, hormone-fueled teen love triangle is certainly one of them. However, in this case, a convincing performance and a scifi twist make The Host a lot more tolerable than any Twilight film. Unfortunately, the sappy and

often forced love story that forms the core of Meyer’s plot comes off as somewhat contrived and overshadows an intriguing premise that director Andrew Niccol conveys so effectively at the start of the film. The screenplay is heavy-handed and much of the production design lacks creative flair. However, Thor Ronan’s commitment Diakow to the conflicted character adds real weight to her role and despite its flaws, The Host takes itself seriously enough to pose some insightful questions.
