Niels Jensen is worried about identity theft because his mailbox, located along Bonson Road, has been broken into repeatedly over the past six years. He says Canada Post won’t move it to a safer location.

“It’s the worst spot ever,” says Niels Jensen, pointing to the Canada Post community mailbox that sits behind a fence and faces a secluded wooded area at the corner of Bonson Road and Fraser Way. In the past six years they’ve lived in Osprey Village, the mail box has been hit at least seven times. The Jensens and many of their neighbours believe the two-block stretch that’s home to two mail boxes is a hot spot of criminal activity, with the latest break-in happening over the Easter long

weekend – the second in a span of two weeks. “We’ve asked [Canada Post] to move the mailbox, but they don’t listen,” said Jensen, a little frustrated because he’s requested the mailbox relocation for six years. “This is a nice neighbourhood, but these types of things are unsettling.” It’s not only the Jensens and their neighbours who are noticing the spike in mail thefts. Ridge Meadows RCMP statistics back the residents’ suspicions. see Mail, p4

All Mitch Selman wanted to do was open up a roofing business in Maple Ridge. Instead, he’s being told he has to renovate his basement. Selman and his family moved into their Cliff Avenue home a year ago and contacted Maple Ridge bylaws about getting a home-based business licence for a roofing company he would like to start. He didn’t count on a zealous District of Maple Ridge bylaw officer adding a pile of conditions to be satisfied before he could do that, even telling him to license his dog and legalize a secondary suite. “I didn’t know there was a law against having a [second] stove in your house,” Selman said Monday. “We’re not renting it to anybody. We’re trying to do the right thing by applying for our licence.” Selman said the requirement to change his house infringes on his personal space, is anti-business, and will cost him at least $3,000. Many families have second stoves in their homes. What happens if a family has nine children? What bothers him most is the abrupt manner in which the orders were issued to his wife when his home was inspected. see Suite, p11

Finding their place in district’s history Haney Nokai Park bears Japanese word for farming association, one of few reminders of past

The Kosakas live that philosophy. “There’s no use crying about anything. It doesn’t do anybody any good,” Machiko said. Machiko, born in Maple Ridge and now 88, doesn’t recall being afraid during the massive relocation, which destroyed finances and disrupted careers. In all, more than 21,000 people in B.C. were uprooted from their homes, the B.C. Security Commission reported in 1942. “We were younger then,” she said. “What else can you do?” “Nothing happened,” she said, referring to feared security incidents or acts of sabotage against the Canadian war effort on behalf of the distant Japanese empire. “Nobody did anything. Waste of money. “It was amazing that nothing happened. [But] just to be sure, they had to evacuate.” Masaru remembers being enrolled in cadets in high school in Vancouver, then being kicked out simply because he was Japanese, shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

S tor y by Phil Melnychuk

F

rom their modern home off Dewdney Trunk Road, Masaru and Machiko Kosaka can almost see the old farms that were sold from under them when they were ordered to leave Maple Ridge in 1942.

It was Labour Day and Masaru and Machiko, still in their late teens, were part of the final round of expulsions from Maple Ridge. Following the Japanese attack on the U.S. in Pearl Harbor, and misguided security concerns, a federal cabinet order required Canadians of Japanese ancestry to be evacuated beyond 100 miles from the coast. Masaru and Machiko were among the last to be shipped out. But because their parents had enough money, they were sent to a self-supporting camp in Lilloett, then made their way to 70 Mile House, where they lived independently, with Masaru working in logging camps and sawmills. “As long as you were self supporting, it was OK,” said Masaru, adding a joke, “With no bombs.” The couple worked in 70 Mile House for the next two decades, got married in Lilloett in 1949 and only returned to Maple Ridge in 1959, after a 17-year absence. Their brief recollections came after a recent kitchen-table get together in their son’s home, and a few months after the opening of a new park in Maple Ridge on 222nd Street – Haney Nokai Park. The name refers to the Japanese farming associations that were created before the Second World War, when Japanese-owned farms were thriving throughout Maple Ridge. According to the book Haney Nokai, written by Yasutaro Yamaga, one of the pioneers profiled on a plaque in the park, there were at least 220 Japanese-owned farms in the area. While the Kosakas were sent to a “self-supporting area,” most were sent to either road work camps or to internment camps in the B.C. Interior. Families could also stay together if they worked on sugar beet farms on the prairies. As reported in the Gazette newspaper’s Sept. 9, 1942 issue, the final

Following the Japanese attack on the U.S. in Pearl Harbor, a federal cabinet order required Canadians of Japanese ancestry to be evacuated beyond 100 miles from the coast. evacuation caught many by surprise, although some remained in Whonnock and Ruskin. “Several of the families affected by the order had been resident in the district for 30 to 40 years,” and many felt they’d be remaining there longer. The paper also noted the removals “saved a possible problem in the schooling area,” because the school board had refused to accept children of Japanese origin.

In the days following Pearl Harbor, the tensions must have been high, as evidenced in a plea by community leader Yasuaro Yamaga, one of the founders of the Haney Nokai. Yamaga said in the Dec. 12, 1941 issue of the Gazette that Japanese schools taught Canadian values while also delivering a message to his own community: “My heart is here in Canada. Whoever protects you, you must be loyal to him. I acted in the past 30 years as a Cana-

dian and I am asking my countrymen to do the same.” Masaru, born in Richmond and now 89, can’t say whether his family ever received compensation for the land that was taken from them. His wife’s parents had 100 acres in the pre-war years, producing greenhouse tomatoes and cucumbers. But he does know he received the $21,000 in redress that the federal government paid all victims of the expulsion in 1988. Masaru sees the payment as a symbolic gesture and points out those who had their land taken away took the biggest hit. “For some who had lots of land, I guess it was a big loss.” But he was pretty young at the time and didn’t have much. “I think I bought a car.” Many people who survive tragedy will attest to the wisdom of not letting the experience define them.

“We were enemy aliens, although we were born here.” “We were Japanese, but we were really Canadian. We just looked Japanese.” One of the tougher parts was the gathering point in Vancouver on the grounds of the Pacific National Exhibition, a place where more than 8,000 people passed through, living in livestock stalls. “They were herded like cattle,” he adds. “Those buildings are still standing there.” Even after the war, Japanese-Canadians weren’t allowed to return to the coast. They were given the option of either going to eastern Canada or if their loyalties were suspect, sent back to post-war Japan, devastated by the atom bomb. It took until 1949 before Japanese-Canadians gained full citizenship rights and allowed back on the coast. The couple, now married 64 years, attended the park opening last fall. The ceremony was important for daughter-in-law Mavis Kosaka. “It was just interesting for our kids … to see what their grandparents went through. Just the history was really good for them.”

Car Care with Cyril Barry

PATIENCE Working the counter of a busy automotive repair shop is a very stressful working environment which requires a great deal of perseverance, patience and resolve. It takes a great deal of people skills, both with clients and personnel, not to mention suppliers of all sizes, shapes and variety of skills. To tie all of these elements together on a daily basis, five days a week, fifty two weeks a year is a near impossible feat. Yet those of us that accomplish this do it with one goal in mind, to keep you our clients happy as above all we are in the people business. It might seem that I am patting my back by the content of the first paragraph but in fact, I am setting you up for the real purpose of this week’s message. When it’s time to get your vehicle repaired or serviced you’ll need to prepare yourself for the sticker shock of what it will cost you and above all you need to exercise massive amounts of patience. Immediate or sudden service does not exist in modern day automotive service and repairs. You will need to either make an appointment or leave your vehicle and be prepared to wait, patiently. I’m going to let you in on an inside industry secret about ordering and receiving parts in this little hamlet of Maple Ridge. We live in a unique part of the world, in essence we live on a land-based island serviced by one road and two bridges. When there are problems with either of our antiquated modes of transportation, which occur daily, your vehicle’s parts get held up and we receive them later than promised. When that happens we cannot deliver your vehicle as promised because, you guessed it, we didn’t have the parts on time. So you need to exercise patience. We do it for six to ten vehicles a day, you only need to do it for one. This is why we like to have all our bookings in the early morning and left with us for the entire day. It allows us to first check what parts the vehicle will need and then source them to make the necessary estimate of both cost and time requirements. It’s also why we need to contact you so we can get authorization to proceed with the necessary repairs, before we order them. If our shop was located on the west side of Pitt River bridge this would not be an issue but due to our location, parts availability is the biggest challenge we face. Now that you have the skinny on the parts situation you can understand our frustration when we can’t keep our promise based on something totally out of our control. You also need to be aware that your vehicle has more parts per square inch than at any time in the history of the automobile. So be patient as soon as we get the parts we can get your vehicle back to you.

Residents want box moved to safer place Mail from front

From January to March, there have been 44 break-ins at community mailboxes in Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge, compared to just seven in the same period last year. About 20 of the break-ins took place in Pitt Meadows. The repeated thefts have forced the Jensens and several other neighbours to rent mailboxes at Shopper’s Drug Mart. Other residents of Osprey Village are calling for the city to install a security camera and step up police patrols. And it’s not just mail theft, they also have concerns about residential break-ins, car theft, noise and drunk people in the area in the wee hours of night. “The mail theft is just the tip of the iceberg,” said one resident, who wanted to remain anonymous, claiming the last time he spoke out, his home was vandalized and truck broken into. “Try to sleep at night, it’s just so loud.” “It’s just so scary,” said Corinne, another resident who fears identity theft. “Just where the box is located, it’s so easy to break in and take the mail.” Several months ago, RCMP arrested a man suspected of stealing mail. He was charged with fraud, but has since been released from custody. Pitt Meadows Mayor Deb Walters said after his release, the thefts spiked again. “It’s ongoing for RCMP,” added Walters, who is being inundated with emails from angry residents. “It’s frustrating for us because Canada Post is an arms-length entity of the federal government and we don’t have a say

about where they place their mail boxes.” Walters has been forwarding the neighbourhood complaints to Canada Post almost daily. She’s also contacted the local Member of Parliament. She points to a mailbox at the other end of Bonson Road in the Somerset subdivision that was relocated after repeated break-ins. Since it was moved to a safer, more visible location near a school, it hasn’t been targeted. “There is no consistently with Canada Post,” said Walters. “I certainly sympathize with the residents. I too am a victim of mail theft.” As their frustration mounts, some residents have stopped calling police to report petty crime, such as their patio furniture being stolen or their homes being egged. Both RCMP and Walters suggest that approach is counterproductive.

“I know they get frustrated,” said Walters. “But the RCMP aren’t mind readers. If these people aren’t going to call in, how can we do anything?” Ridge Meadows RCMP confirmed investigators have their eye on a few suspects. “We have been working with Canada Post to coordinate efforts to prevent and identify the person or persons responsible,” said Insp. Dave Fleugel. Auxiliary police officers are targeting neighbourhoods being hit by mail theft to offer residents crime prevention tips. They are planning a similar crime prevention blitz in Osprey Village. Police are also encouraging residents to join Block Watch, which is already in place in Osprey Village. Thus far, only 53 homes have signed up. Canada Post, meanwhile, is working to reinforce all the 20,126 community mailboxes in B.C. with new sturdy locks

Despite a recent spike in mail theft in Metro Vancouver, Canada Post maintains the mailboxes are safe. “We have thousands of these across Canada and the majority of them have never been touched,” said Canada Post spokesman John Caines. As for moving the mailboxes along Bonson Road to a safer location in Osprey Village, Caines explained Canada Post prefers to locate them at a distance of 400 metres from homes.

Maple Ridge Citizen of the Year devoted to church and community Sammy Nelligan joins husband as award recipient by Nei l Corbe tt staff reporter

T

he Maple Ridge Community F o u n d a t i o n’s 2013 Citizen of the Year is a woman whose volunteer community service goes back decades. Sammy Nelligan was honoured at the annual banquet last night at the Meadow Gardens Golf Course. “In many respects, the Foundation’s Citizen of the Year Award is in reality a lifetime achievement award,” Debbie McRae, chair of the Citizen of the Year Selection Committee, said in handing out the award. “The successful candidate will invariably have dedicated many years to many causes in our community in order to be the successful candidate. This year’s candidate is no exception.” Nelligan was a Grade 2 and 3 teacher at Pitt Meadows elementary, and her impressive

community involvement began when she started a family. She has been married for 54 years to husband Reg, who was a previous Citizen of the Year recipient. They have raised five children together, and are grandparents of 12. Nelligan has Nelligan been a member of St. Luke’s Parish for 50 years. She taught and coordinated the children’s Religious Education Program for 25 years. She also played the organ at church services for two decades, and was the St. Luke’s office manager for 25 years. She still serves on the Parish Finance Advisory Council, and holds the position of Parish Resource Coordinator. Nelligan was also president of the Catholic Women’s League, and is the chair of the Community Life Committee. This volunteer’s impressive work for her church is only part of

her volunteerism. She also works with the Cythera House Society, and began the Change for Change fundraising campaign, which helps buy school supplies for the children at the facility for battered women. Nelligan also launched the Mother’s Day collection for baby clothes and supplies to support the WomanCare program. Other noteworthy works: • organizer of the World Day of Prayer in Maple Ridge; • curling league organizer; • lawn bowling club member; • chair of the Maple Ridge Festival of Light Society; • secretary of the Community Festivals Network. McRae said that even for people who regularly volunteer, looking at the amount of public service this year’s winner has given, and the length of time she has served, is a humbling experience.

“She really stands out,” said McRae. The annual Citizen of the Year Award recognizes “a dedicated individual who has made outstanding volunteer contributions to enhance the quality of life for citizens of Maple Ridge and/or to enhance the image of Maple Ridge in the larger community.”

THE NEWS/opinion News Views

Border crossing Over the Easter long weekend, thousands of bargain-hungry Lower Mainland residents fled Arizona-like temperatures here in search of good deals south of the border. With the Canadian dollar hovering at par, premium outlet stores likely scooped up hard-earned Canuck bucks that had been exchanged for U.S. greenbacks. This is nothing new. Cross-border shopping tends to rise and fall with the exchange rate — and dipped appreciably when the loonie was low between the early 1990s and 2003. For the most part, the government has taken a hands-off approach, netting millions in customs duties and foregoing millions from people who bring items across but don’t declare or are within their legal limits. But some would like to see the government to do more to keep shoppers close to home. Reducing tariffs is seen as one way to make Canadian retailers more competitive. Some fiddling has already taken place, with a reduction in imports for sporting gear and baby clothes. But many worry a corresponding increase in tariffs on a number of countries that used to get a break because their economies were small and struggling now no longer do. China was one such country. It’s true that tightening that loophole may hike consumer prices three per cent in the short-term until importers can cut better deals. But it’s difficult to justify this special deal, which was originally conceived as a form of “aid,” for a country like China, which has the largest economy in the world. Canada needs to strengthen its own manufacturing industry to become more diversified and, to this end, the government has cut import duties on manufacturing equipment while ending deals for competing countries. What can Canadians do to help support our economy, which pays for the health care, social services and infrastructure that support us every day? They can do a better job at math for one. As Target shoppers are starting to find out in Ontario, it’s more expensive to do business here, and even the big U.S. retailer’s prices north of the border reflect that. Then, when they head south, they can add travel time, border lineups, the cost of gas, food and accommodation to their so-called savings to see if they still come out ahead. – Black Press Tell us what you think @ www.mapleridgenews.com

Time is up for municipal golf course H

as the time come to consider different uses for the Maple Ridge Golf Course, a municipally owned facility which has become a very expensive subsidized playpen for too few people? The course currently Sidewinder generates $140,000 per year in lease pay- Sandy Macdougall ments for use of the approximately 40-acre site, a true bargain by any standards. For mixed residential development purposes alone, the site could probably accommodate between 400 and 500 home sites. That would generate hundreds of jobs during the construction phase and many times the current $140,000 in ongoing annual municipal revenues. It goes without saying that any future use of the property must recognize its historical importance as the birthplace of Maple Ridge, but that can easily be incorporated into any subsequent development. The current operators of the course claim these are tough times for ninehole golf courses. If true, that begs the question, should the municipality be in competition with privately owned courses facing the same challenges, but do so without municipal subsidies?

Q

uestion of the week:

The financial return to taxpayers for use of the multi-million dollar site is pitifully low and there doesn’t seem to be enough business to make it pay without attracting golfers from other areas. Again, should Maple Ridge taxpayers be required to subsidize golfers from other municipalities through the incredibly low lease rates paid by the golf course operators? In today’s world, no major amateur sport could exist without taxpayer subsidies, but the level of that support should be justified by the number of local participants, a challenge the Maple Ridge Golf Course would have a difficult time meeting. Even the heritage aspects of maintaining the golf course are questionable as it seems it was originally settled as a farm, not a golf course. Of course, as any oldtime residents of Hammond could tell you, sledding is also a very popular historic use of the golf course, whenever there’s enough snow. There were even historic instances of a few of Hammond’s bad boys who enjoyed the profitable pastime of stealing stray golf balls and selling them back to the clubhouse before the actual owners had a chance to retrieve them. Times have changed and some these historic activities have abated or disappeared altogether. The golf course has been enjoyed by many over the years, but that use has become too expensive to expect all taxpay-

ers to subsidize its continued existence for the benefit of the few remaining golfers. With all of the required urban services available at or nearby, it makes perfect sense to develop the site in a manner whereby greater numbers of local residents and taxpayers would benefit, not just a few local or out of town golfers.

“The golf course has been enjoyed by many over the years, but that use has become too expensive to expect all taxpayers to subsidize its continued existence for the benefit of the few remaining golfers.” Golf is a relatively expensive sport for its participants. But, in the case of the Maple Ridge Golf Course, it’s also expensive for all non-golfing taxpayers. If the golf course must be retained, the lease fees should reflect market value based on the highest and best use of the site, and that probably is not as a subsidized golf course, which pays little or no property taxes. Sandy Macdougall is a retired journalist and former district councillor.

So, how should we, as bystanders, behave when a police dog is working and we aren’t close to home? That info would be more useful than hobbling the police with additional regulations.

New toys • Judith Harrower: Re: Ridge RCMP sued for police dog bite (mapleridgenews.com). This article illustrates how the misuse of any weapon is a growing concern for Canadians. Misuse/overuse of the Taser resulted in stricter legislation and now it will be the frequent use and numerous deployments of police dogs to do what an officer should be doing. Taking the easier route of dealing with criminals, such as Tasers, weapons or dogs, leads to unnecessary serious injuries and deaths, all in B.C. The seven injured civilians’ group is similar to the support group formed also in B.C. for family members of relatives killed at the hands of the RCMP. One could say that the B.C. RCMP has numerous radical officers using excessive force in this province, that serious injuries and/or death are common and numerous – perhaps [it’s] time for B.C. to establish its own force, as nearly all the harassment, sexual and otherwise, also are in B.C. ...

Guyana never had white sand Editor, The News: Re: District poised to repeat mistakes in Albion (Letters, March 22). This is the funniest thing I’ve ever heard. My husband and I rolled on the ground laughing over this. Sold the white sand to Hawaii? Oh Lordy, Lord, that’s hilarious. J. Craig Ruthven, you were taken by a master prankster. I can hear the stories that man told when he got home about the gullible foreigner. You got taken good. If you were going to live and work in Guyana, it would have been wise to do a little research on the country. Guyana has never, ever had white sand on its beaches, which border the Atlantic. The dirt carried down river by the Amazon flows out into the Atlantic in cycles. Some years there is none; some years there is a lot. So where the river meets the ocean, the tides force it to curl left and right and the silt is deposited along the shoreline of all the neighbouring countries, creating dark brown clay like beaches. This soil is extremely fertile and rich, making it great farming land, but not great for tourists who want to sunbathe. Georgetown, Guyana is also several feet below sea

level, so if it were not for the seawall, which is like a huge dike, and were it not for those huge boulders deposited on the shoreline, which function as breakwaters to slow the erosion of the coastline, then in years, or cycles when the silt and brown sand was removed by the tides instead of being deposited, you would have been swimming for dear life instead of sitting on the seawall, being taken for a gullible foreigner. Guyanese are noted for their sense of humour. Now that some years have passed, I hope you too can appreciate the joke and laugh at yourself. Patricia Gibbs Maple Ridge

Everybody but us Editor, The News: Re: District poised to repeat mistakes in Albion (Letters, March 22). I was 17, and that fellow did weave a great tale. That’s pretty funny. For me, though, it doesn’t detract from the power of the imagery, nor does it reframe what is happening in Albion. The area is inherently beautiful and vulnerable, riddled with wildlife corridors and creeks. We really do not have industry working in our fa-

vour. Commercial development is pretty scant, as well, albeit, improving incrementally. Why tamper with the one thing that we do have in spades, which is the more open, lush, and natural feel, also found in North Vancouver and North Burnaby, where the distinctive West Coast surroundings are both protected and cherished? Now, that’s something to market to the world out there. We are not currently building houses for people in Albion. There are few buyers, and the more haphazard cramming and sprawling that we do, like the row upon row of townhouses slated for 240th Street, including, right next to Albion elementary, the less likely it will be that things are going to change, in this respect. We are building houses to support an unsustainable model, wherein a significant portion of annual revenue comes from building permits and various revenues associated with new construction. These homes cost the municipality in the long-run because of the costs of servicing the added infrastructure. The development cost charges merely cover the ini-

tial upgrading to servicing. So, we are building these houses to support previous unsustainable decisions to build houses. What will this town be left with? Loose, ill-defined sprawl, without the commercial or industrial tax base to support it. Chilliwack is different in this respect, and Abbotsford, and Mission, and Langley, and Surrey, and Port Coquitlam. Okay, everybody but us. We will have thousands of regretful homeowners who will be saddled with high taxes, plagued by congested commuter routes, drained by denuded landscapes. Many will have no choice but to take a hit, and sell their homes. This situation is the very definition of shortterm thinking. This is fact, not fiction. Thoughtful, well planned, well defined development, now that’s the way out. There’s still this elephant in the room. These homes aren’t selling. Where’s the trigger point when we say, ‘Let’s slow things down and start rethinking the problem’? Re: Ernie Daykin re-elected Maple Ridge mayor. It’s still not too late. J. Craig Ruthven Maple Ridge

It’s Northumberland Court all over again, and again Editor, The News: Re: Street ministry moving on (The News, March 20). I just want to say that our mayor and council are a disgrace to this community. Leave the CEED Centre alone and concentrate on cleaning up the south

side of Lougheed Highway. The building between King’s Kitchen and the North Street store is a disgusting eyesore, just like Northumberland Court was. Still, nothing is getting done. Also, council needs to do something about the apartments on 225th Street.

The police are there non-stop. Again, it’s Northumberland all over again. So Mayor Ernie Daykin, get all the police reports and clean it up. Diana Martin Maple Ridge

A Maple Ridge man has been sent to prison for his role in the Stanley Cup riot. Andrew Glenn Cuthbert received a 90-day sentence Tuesday for a guilty plea to one count of participating in a riot. According to Crown, Cuthbert, 21, was accused of helping destroy three vehicles during the June 15, 2011 rampage that erupted after the Vancouver Canucks

lost Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals to the Boston Bruins. Cuthbert will serve his sentence Sunday through Tuesday so he can keep his job. He also received 12 months probation and must complete 60 hours of community service during the first 10 months of the probation order. Cuthbert is one of five men from Maple Ridge to face charges for rioting. Thus far, four have been sentenced. Connor Blair Epp received a three-month conditional sentence and nine-month probation order last October.

In February, Jordan Houde got a five-month conditional sentence and 12 months probation, Michael David Anderson pleaded guilty to damaging two unmarked police vehicles and kicking in the windows of a pair of Nelson Street restaurants. In January, he received a three-month prison sentence, in addition to an 18-month probation order. The fifth and final man awaiting his sentence is Jeff Ray Post, who intends to plead guilty to rioting and is schedule to appear in court for a pre-sentence report in

May. More than 40 convicted and sentenced rioters, including three from Maple Ridge, are being periodically monitored by the Integrated Riot Investigation Team to ensure they’re complying with probation or other conditions. However, at least a quarter of Stanley Cup rioters convicted so far are ignoring court orders or failing to comply with probation, according to Vancouver Police. Police have recommended charges against 315 rioters. Charges have been laid against 198, so far. Of those, 56 have been sentenced.

Hobson’s sexual relationship began in 2001, when the girl was 14. He was 33 then. The relationship continued until she turned 18. Hobson is already a registered sex offender because he was convicted of another sexual assault last April on Vancouver Island. He will now be registered as a sex offender for life. In addition to the prison term, Hobson also received a three year probation order.

Make sure permits for all renovations Suite from front

“There’s no compromise with these guys,” he said. “Part of the whole occurrence is the way this guy comes in and starts barking orders to her.” To make it more confusing, when Selman took the list of requirements into municipal hall, he was told he didn’t have to do everything. According to the letter from the district, if Selman doesn’t want to go through the trouble of legalizing the basement suite, he could simply haul out the stove, decommission the suite and be assured that he wouldn’t have to pay double the water and sewage rates. Except it’s not that simple. Because the basement was finished downstairs, the bylaws department requires that all the work that was done be inspected and in accord with the district’s regulations. That means he has to get the construction, electrical and plumbing inspected, and brought up to code if necessary, in addition to removing the kitchen sink and cupboards in the suite. He also has to ensure the wiring for the stove has been removed all the way from the stove outlet to the breaker panel. But if the basement was legally finished with the proper permits, he would still has to remove the stove and its wiring, as well as the cupboards and kitchen sink and file a discharge document to decommission the suite. Permits are required for removing the sink and the stove wiring, meaning qualified contractors have to be hired to do the job, adding substantially to costs.

“It’s just the safest way because they know exactly what they’re buying.” Liz Holitzki, bylaws director

That’s why it’s important that future home buyers check with the district before they sign an offer to buy a house, said Liz Holitzki, district bylaws director. Anybody who buys a house should ensure that permits have been issued for all renovations, she explained. “It’s just the safest way

Another all-candidates meeting staff reporter

Voters in Maple Ridge-Mission will be able to see their candidates tackle the tough questions Thursday, April 25 at 7:30 p.m. when the Whonnock Community Association holds an all-candidates meeting for the May 14 provincial election. So far, the only two official candidates for the election are scheduled to attend: Elizabeth Rosenau for the NDP in maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows; and Marc Dalton for the Liberals in Maple Ridge-Mission. Meeting organizer Phil Johnson said there should be a two-minute presentation time by each candidate, followed by questions from the audience. With only two candidates running so far, candidates will have more time for speaking. Whonnock Lake Centre is located at 27871 – 113th Ave. The community association recently decided to let the District of Maple Ridge parks and leisure services department administer the hall. “That will be turned over to the municipality,” effective July 1, Johnson said. He was part of the original group of volunteers who built the hall 25 years ago. The building is continually booked, Johnson said. “It’s a million-dollar building and we raised all the money to build it,” he added. “Twenty-five years later, it’s still a popular place.” The Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Chamber of Commerce has also organized an all-candidates’ meeting for Thursday, May 2, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Meadowridge School, 12224 – 240th St. Candidates from both Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge-Mission will be at the meeting. The dividing line for the ridings is roughly 224th Street. • Any questions, contact Jesse Sidhu at jesse@ ridgemeadowschamber.com.

because they know exactly what they’re buying.” All that information is available at the front counter in municipal hall just by providing the address of the house. She said the building requirements and inspections all have to be met before a business licence is issued because having one implies all other local bylaws were followed. However, staff are willing to work with the homeowner. Likewise, Selman will still have to license his dog before he gets his business licence. That can be done online for $25 for spayed or neutered dogs. As of Thursday, facing a Friday deadline for either applying for decommissioning the suite or the inspection permits, Selman hadn’t decided what to do. The letter from the bylaw department spelling out his options came March 22 and he had to have the applications filed by April 5, or face “further enforcement action as required.”

The Belle of the ball at Fight Pit Parents say the sport of mixed martial arts is good for their children by Nei l Corbe tt staff reporter

A

n 11-year-old girl from Maple Ridge is emerging as a phenom in the sport of mixed martial arts. Belle Gagnon won the Tiger Balm Invitational at Capilano college last month, when she was still just 10 years old, winning fights with boys along the way. Her father, Clayton Gagnon, who runs a local roofing business, said he put his daughter into the program at The Fight Pit for the impressive workouts. Belle is an athlete who stands out in all sports, and he thought the cross-training would be good for her. Her eight-yearold brother Ben is also in the gym. Belle surprised everyone by dispatching opponents with the calm regularity of a Georges St-Pierre. “She just took off – she’s just good at it,” said Clayton. Her coach, Chris Simpson, said Belle is a natural. “She kills everybody. She’s fast, limber, flexible, aggressive, not scared to get hurt ... ” he goes on. She ends up against bigger kids her own age, and they don’t present any particular problem. “If she can get them on the ground, they’re done,” said Simpson. Clayton doesn’t worry about his daughter fighting boys, noting that pre-teen girls can more than hold their own in the octagon. In fact, the two top B.C. fighters in her age class are both girls – Belle being one of them. If MMA has become mainstream sports entertainment, MMA for children still raises eyebrows, if not controversy. Last year a New Brunswick cage fight involving children was highlighted by the CBC. Before that, a B.C.-based MMA trainer raised the alarm that some fights were allowing children to use the ground and pound technique, where fighters who are on the canvass can be punched in the head. Just last month the South Dakota State Legislature debated a ban on all MMA, when representative Steve Hickey raised the issue, asking: “Who would Jesus elbow in the face?” The legislature defeated his motion, but approved a state com-

mission to regulate combat sports. Gagnon acknowledges that kids cry at MMA tournaments, but notes children also cry when they get hit by baseballs, or blindsided by a bodycheck in a hockey game. For him, the professionalism of the coaches and organizers reassures him that his daughter is safe. The kids wear well padded gloves, head gear, and shin guards.

“And, the rule is because they’re kids, they can’t strike to the face.” The parents who drop off their kids at The Fight Pit all believe in MMA as a good sport for kids – as karate, kung fu, wrestling and other sports have been. Penny Koop has three boys – 18, 14 and nine – who go to the gym. “I just love this place,” she said. Her middle son, 14-year-

old Colton, is “really active,” and would not do well in a martial art that demanded a lot of repetitive exercises. The Fight Pit offers a variety. “They seem to enjoy it, it gives them lots of confidence, and they get lots of exercise.” Tanya Wagner’s nine-year old son Sebastien loves watching fights, as well as wrestling and physical play, so she sought out the Fight Pit.

“It was the first time I really saw him sweat, but he enjoys it,” she said. She likes the club’s policy that if someone uses their MMA techniques in the schoolyard, they will be kicked out of the club. Tammy Gagnon admits she was hesitant about Belle being involved in UFC-style fighting, but any anxiety was put away after she watched her daughter take the classes.

She said Belle takes all of her sports seriously, and she wasn’t surprised to see her excel. Tammy also likes that her daughter has learned self defence. “If she was grabbed from behind by someone, she could absolutely defend herself,” she said. “I can’t get out of her chokeholds.” Curtis Butterworth joined the Fight Pit when he was a 10-year-old MMA fan. “It was a bit of a struggle to get my dad to let me join,” he recalls, and he had to save up several months worth of dues before his father finally relented. Now 16, he can look back on what the classes have done for him, and for the other kids at the Fight Pit. “It’s great for kids. For myself, it’s given me discipline, self respect, and taught me to respect others.” He remembers his first fight: “I got beat up pretty bad.” Since then, he has brought home medals from a lot of tournaments. Like any teen who excels at a sport, his goal is to take MMA as far as he can.

Roubaix race over the years has allowed us to offer a new and challenging event on the Saturday,” said race organizer Barry Lyster of Local Ride Bike Shop. “There is new and growing excitement around road racing right now, and we expect to have record numbers out this weekend.” The Pitt-Polder Time Trial will see riders race against the clock in a 12.5km course, finishing at Pitt Lake. The route is mostly flat, but it promises to be tough, with rough pavement and likely strong winds. The event is a new one on the calendar and will also act as a qualifier for the Canada Summer Games.

Emphasis on training MMA from p15

“I for sure want to become professional, and have a few pro fights before I even think of leaving martial arts,” he said. The kids almost all arrive 15 minutes early, to start with soccer. Simpson said the classes involve an indoor soccer warmup, an intense workout that includes burpees, chase games, pushups and other calisthenic-type exercises. The last half hour is technique training or sparring. He enters kids in tournaments only three or four times per year, and he makes sure they watch a tournament before they enter. Tournaments are rough, and will put far more demands on the kids than even his classes, which have a toughen-em-up element. He will take kids for his classes as soon as they can tell their right from their left – about six years of age. They don’t start fighting right away. “The first year is having fun and starting to enjoy this place,” Simpson said. “The next year is about more tutelage.” His youngest competitor, Cam Spooner, is just seven years old. He has a bronze medal. Generally the Fight Pit kids do well in competition. Not all are naturals. Some take their lumps. Simpson maintains that’s important too. “It’s good for kids to lose, I think. It teaches them a whole new thing.”

I did my variety of crunches on Sunday, and decided to count, did 184! After some food prep I headed out for a short walk before Easter dinner, and that included 21 degrees in Pitt Meadows. Another shorts and t-shirt day!! The sun and movement felt delicious! I was so in control with that dinner and all the snacks. I did have a few chips and dip- ah well. Only one little chocolate egg, and two teeny slices of dessert. And took much smaller helpings of everything except the coleslaw and Brussels Sprouts! No alcohol that day, so it helps with the calories in. I did miss my daily spinach, but that’s okay. My sister in-law Leah always makes the most delicious vegan food. This time it was a vegan ‘chocolate chip cookie pie’. It was mainly made with honey, chickpeas and dark chocolate. So delicious!

Counting the sum of our blessings I

have to confess that since I began writing about eldercare, I have found it difficult at times to keep an optimistic view with regard to the aging process. Sometimes ignorance is bliss, and before I started experiencing the challenges of aging through the lives of my family members, I was looking forward to the golden years. I consider myself more optimistic than most, so my growing hesitation to embrace the benefits of retirement and having full control of my time caught me a bit off-guard. I began to delve a little deeper into my thinking process, trying to determine if this newfound anxiety was a result of too many challenges in too short a time with family, or too much personalizing of circumstances I was hearing about with the question, “What will happen to me if ... ?” Certainly the health issues of our aging parents have weighed heavily on my wife and I. There is a helplessness that comes with not being able to make things better, compounded when there is a distance between you that makes even personal contact difficult. Aging and ailing family members are a source of great anxiety. But when the stress of difficult circumstances turns into options that bring families together, then perhaps it is a blessing. I can honestly say that while my early retirement to care for my father brought significant changes

to my life, the time we spent together was more than worth it. As families have moved closer together or, by necessity, spent more time together, As we age many have felt the bless- Graham Hookey ing of being able to help their parents in their time of need. From a personal perspective, learning of the challenges for our future, financial independence, physical health and mental health, has certainly been humbling for my wife and I. Yet, to continue to age in denial of these challenges, and to take no actions to plan for them, would shift anxiety and responsibility from us to our own children. We have come to the realization that there are certain legal and financial steps we need to take, and some discussions we need to have with our children, to provide at least a framework for decisionmaking that might fall in their laps in the event of a catastrophic health event. It has also been insightful to me to realize how important it will be to work hard on maintaining a positive outlook as the inevitable challenges of aging arise. Indeed, depression is a signifi-

cant factor in reducing the quality of life for many seniors as they adapt to various losses, of spouses, friends, mobility, independence and mental faculties. I read a story last week about a man who was diagnosed with early Alzheimer’s, educated on the sequence of losses he should expect and the treatments that might be necessary, and sent home to live his remaining time as well as possible. At first, he was justifiably upset and difficult to live with. But he chose to join a support group, in which the focus was not on what was being lost, but on what remained. The group met once a month and shared stories of things each was achieving, strategies they were using, and ways they could support each other socially so that they could keep their attitudes positive and their mental processes sharp. For this man, the celebration of his glass half full dramatically changed the quality of his life. My wife and I, in the likely event that our trip through the golden years takes a long and winding path, hope we’ve done our kids a favour by putting things in place to help them help us, and we hope to keep our eye on the ball of being grateful for what we have, even as the sum total of those blessings diminishes. f you’re looking to sell your home, it will help a lot if it’s in Pitt Meadows. The city currently has four of the top seven highest selling neighbourhoods in the past six months, according to the Multiple Listing Service. The various neighbourhoods in Pitt Meadows are the most popular, with the mid-Meadows zone (south of Lougheed Highway and east of Harris Road), ranking first in all of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, with 59 per cent of its listings (53 out of 90) selling since October. South Meadows (the Bonson area) was also popular, with 41 per cent of homes (31 out of 75) selling, making it the third hottest neighbourhood in the two communities. West Meadows and Central Meadows also ranked high, at 40 per cent (tied for fourth) and 36 per cent (sixth), respectively. In Maple Ridge, the hottest neighbourhood is the northwest sector (just east of Meadow Gardens Golf Course), second with slightly more than 42 per cent of listed homes selling over the past six months (42 out of 102). Cottonwood came in at 40 per cent (tied for fourth), and East Central Maple Ridge (224 to 232 streets) is the fifth best market in

That the various Pitt Meadows neighbourhoods are amongst the leaders is no surprise to Debbie Sheppard, a veteran realtor at the Re/Max Lifestyles office. She says Pitt Meadows always sells well because the price point is usually

right for people moving east in Metro Vancouver. The Highlands/Wildwood Park area, in particular, is a favourite for people looking for a good family home in a nice neighbourhood at the right price. a recent MLS tour and about hot selling neighbourhoods. The consensus was Pitt Meadows, Albion, west-central Maple Ridge, Somerset and northwest Maple Ridge. Jamie Luttmer, managing broker at Coldwell Banker Tri-Tel Realty, concurred.

He added that east-central Maple Ridge is also popular because it’s a good, solid area for anyone who wants to keep the price down while still getting a decent home. “Basically, if the condition of the product is good, and the price is good, it’s going to sell,” said Luttmer. He noted average prices have dropped slightly in recent months, about one per cent by his estimation. Sheppard stated anything in the $400,000-$450,000 price range has been most popular lately. She said things have been picking up in the past month, but added people still aren’t confident enough to purchase. “January and February, I had tonnes of people through my open houses, although few of them were making decisions. Lower mortgage rates are going to help, especially with first time buyers who have been scarce recently.” If you’re looking for acreage, and you have the money, now is a terrific time to buy, according to Luttmer. He stated there are some good deals on acreages right now because they’ve taken a real hit in terms of prices as people who dream about owning acreage find they can’t afford the dream in today’s market, and those who want to sell can’t find buyers at the price point they want.

S

pring is in the air. The sound of the birds chirping and the beauty of the first cherry blossoms bring hope and joy to us after a long winter. Creation cries out, “Summer is coming.” In my own life, I know of dozens of people who have not only been going through a season of winter, but also a season of hardship. Similar to the cycle of seasons, our life often brings about seasons of difficulty, followed by seasons of serenity. Which season are you in? Our tendency during a season of difficulty is to worry, loose sleep, and ultimately, to fear. However, one of the subjects that Jesus was abundantly clear on was the topic of worry. In Luke 12:22-35, Jesus uses flowers and birds as his illustrative objects of teaching. He says, “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Consider the birds: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds. Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?” Jesus’ reminder to us is that our value as human beings surpasses any other creation of God; and therefore, God’s desire to take care of our needs is incomparable. Jesus makes it very clear that when we are worried about material things, we are not doing the one thing we need to do the most, trusting God.

✔ Routine and diabetic care ✔ Custom orthotics ✔ Sports Medicine ✔ Walk-in appointments welcome

Dr. David A. Dixon PODIATRIST

By saying, “Who of your by worrying can add a single hour do your life?” Jesus is revealing that there is simply no productivity in worrying. It’s pointless. It won’t improve the situation, so why invest so much time in it? Some of us may be thinking, ‘Okay, that sounds a bit ethereal, only if you knew what I was going through.’ Jesus offers a solution, he continues, “Consider how the lilies grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you – you of little faith. And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.”

“Consider how the lilies grow. They do not labor or spin ... “ Essentially, we are to invest the time that we do worrying and instead seek God and his purposes for our lives and his promise to us is that all will be well in the end. Instead of thinking anxious thoughts of fear, instead choose to think about the numerous promises of God and pray for strength. As a wise man once said, “Change the way you look at things and the things you look at will change.” – Dave Jonsson, associate pastor NorthRidge Foursquare Church.

IN MEMORIAM

In Loving Memory of

Sandy Lynne Tipton (nee Boychuk) 1966 ~ 2007

I often sit and think about the years that have passed by and of the happiness and joy that were shared by you and I. I think of all the laughter, the smiles and all the fun and before I even know it my tears have again begun. For although it brings me comfort to walk down memory lane, it reminds me how without you life has never been the same.

O’NEILL Adrian Jack O’Neill, aged 24, left this world on March 26th, 2013. He is survived by his parents, Patrick O’Neill and Erin Coulter, siblings, Beau & Skye, step brothers, Dustin and Clayton Cross, grandparents, Jack Heidt, Iris Evans, Gloria Feinstein and Frank O’Neill, his many other relatives, his close-knit circle of friends and Lordco co-workers. Born June 3rd, 1988, Age, or Adro, as he was fondly called, lived out his life in the pursuit of happiness, whether it was on the leisurely beach of a summer’s day or at the joyous dinner table of a winter’s evening. He had a smile that was infectious, which was usually accompanied by a funny punch-line-arm-jerk that was particularly characteristic of his celebratory good humour. Never mind flies, he never caused any creature displeasure. Adrian spent a great deal of his life working to prove himself independent, and spent a quarter of his life working at the local Lordco auto parts shop. He loved his girlfriend, the Canucks, Futurama, whisky, his cat Jameson, his late snake Monty the Python (note the dry humour in his animals’ names), his family, his friends, bacon, eggnog, Birch Bay, traveling and much of the world he came into contact with. He is dearly missed by everyone who knew him, that is certain. With fond memories we miss you Adrian. Condolences may be sent to www.mapleridgefuneral.ca
