Emergency care for fire victims extended

The provincial government has extended funding for emergency housing for the more than 100 residents displaced by Wednesday’s deadly fire at the Elm building in Langley City. “Because of the exceptional circumstances involving the vulnerable population with complex housing and care needs, Emergency Management BC has extended the emergency social services” for those impacted by the fire at the Elm building from the usual 72 hours to three weeks, announced Justice Minister Shirley Bond on Friday. The senior couple who were rescued from the fire and listed in critical condition last week have been released from hospital. Another elderly man originally in critical condition is doing “much better” and is expected to fully recover, said Jeannette Dagenais, administrator for the Langley Lions Seniors Housing Society. It doesn’t appear there will be any details from police or fire about the elderly man who died in the fire. There are some reports the man was in his 80s and was found by a firefighter on the floor of the hallway very near the second floor suite where the fire started. continued, PAGE 6
No easy answers in wake of fire Putting sprinklers into Langley City’s older buildings will be a complicated and costly endeavour, says mayor Brenda anderson Times Reporter
The fire that tore through the Elm building at Langley’s Rainbow Lodge on Wednesday morning, killing an elderly man and critically injuring three other people was a terrible tragedy, said the City’s mayor. But bringing the six buildings in the aging complex up to modern-day fire codes will be a prohibitively costly endeavour, added Peter Fassbender. The building in which the fire broke out was not equipped with sprinklers, but because the complex for low-income
seniors was built in 1983, it is grandfathered under the new building code and therefore does not require them, he explained. Fassbender was outside the Elm building for much of the day on Wednesday as firefighters from both the City and the Township worked to extinguish the fire that destroyed or damaged up to 40 units in apartment block. As he watched firefighters, paramedics and other emergency service personnel work, Fassbender was particularly moved by the sight of an elderly woman being given oxygen on her balcony while crews battled the fire in the unit next to hers,
“For (the Lions Society) to retrofit those buildings with sprinklers in those buildings would be a huge cost … It’s a significant, significant upgrade that would be required.” And where that funding would come from is another huge question mark. “There may be funding we can be advocating for from other levels of government,” said Fassbender. “Where to find the money is always the challenge. A lot of these societies raise money on their own. “And if you redevelop, where do (residents) go to live? It’s not a small issue by any stretch.”

because it was too difficult for her to climb down a ladder. “It would have been so scary for her,” he said. “Never mind the rest of us watching. “That just made me stop and think, ‘OK, I’m not just going to say, there are no sprinklers, there’s nothing we can do.’ “That’s true in the short term. In the long term it’s critical for us to look at, ‘Is there anything we can do?’” said Fassbender. “What I’ve asked our building inspector and our fire department to do in light of (Wednesday’s fire) is to look at what options do we have.” There won’t be any easy or inexpensive solutions, he said.

Praises community for generosity in the wake of blaze that left them homeless Dan Ferguson Times Reporter
The day after the March 26 fire that destroyed their Langley home, Paul and Tamara Riddoch loaded up with coffee and doughnuts, packed up their twoyear-old daughter Berlyn and made the rounds of the firefighters and police who came to their aid, dropping in at local fire halls and the RCMP detachment building. They wanted to say thanks. “They deserve recognition,” Paul Riddoch told The Times. The family, who did not have insurance, lost everything to the fire that destroyed their rented home in the 4500 block of 208 Street. “We really felt lost at first,” Riddoch said. But in the days that followed, the family has been flooded with donations, and offers of assistance, everything from clothing to furniture to toys for Berlyn.
Lots of toys. “She’s pretty much got everything she had and more,” Riddoch said. “We’re so grateful to be a community like this.” More than 100 gift cards have been donated as well. And a professional photographer has offered to take new pictures to replace the family photos that were lost in the fire. For now, the family is staying with Riddoch’s mother while they search for a new home in Langley that is up to the standards of their old place. “We’re being picky,” he said. The landlord they shared their previous home with was “awesome” Riddoch said, and the 208 Street property, with its big back yard and generous parking, was perfect for a family with a dog and a home-based business. Riddoch said their dog, a three-year-old labrador named Charlie, is the most upset about the fire because the condo his

than that, she seems to be doing just fine. “We may have lost everything, but we have ourselves,” he said. “We have each other. We’re blessed.” Riddoch said the family is

A two-vehicle crash tied up traffic in Walnut Grove for about an hour Wednesday (April 3) afternoon. Langley RCMP said a 1996 Jeep Cherokee was heading eastbound on 88 Avenue around 3:40 p.m. when it attempted to turn left onto 208 Street. The Jeep collided with a 2002 Hyundai Elantra that was heading west on 88 Avenue at the time. No serious injuries were reported in the collision, which rendered both vehicles unable to be driven. The driver of the Jeep, a Surrey man, was ticketed for making an unsafe turn.

A Langley elementary school teacher accused of molesting one of her students will go to trial on Jan. 20, 2014. Deborah Ralph, 58, appeared in Supreme Court in New Westminster on Thursday to find out when her trial will proceed. It appears 15 days has been set aside for the jury trial. She was in Provincial Court in Surrey for a preliminary hearing, accompanied by two of her lawyers, for a couple of days in late February and early March. The preliminary hearing heard testimony from her accuser. There is a ban on publication on any information that takes place in a preliminary hear-
ing. She has chosen to have a jury trial as opposed to a trial with judge alone. Ralph, who was a teacher at James Kennedy Elementary, is charged with one count of sexual assault and one count of sexual interference of a person under the age of 14. It is alleged Ralph sexually assaulted a male student between December 1998 and June 2001. The alleged victim contacted Langley RCMP on Nov. 8, 2011 to report he had been sexually assaulted by Ralph. He had been one of her students at James Kennedy but alleges he was assaulted when she was no longer his teacher. Ralph taught at the school from September 1987 to June 2010. She was suspended with pay after she was charged.

Langley Fine Arts students joined local Aboriginal Elders, community leaders and District staff at the blessing ceremony for the new Fort Langley Community Garden recently.
District seeks feedback on budget priorities The Board of Education of the Langley School District is asking for public input into the preparation of the operating fund component of its 2013-2014 Annual Budget. The 2013-2014 annual budget will be developed following the principles of the Board of Education’s Strategic Plan 2012-2013: Year I of III and the goals of the District Achievement Contract 2011-2014 which includes the particular foci of our Aboriginal Education Programs. The Board is asking that your input take into consideration its four fundamental principles:
While the recent Ministry of Education Funding announcement for next year does provide additional funding of approximately $2.6 million over what the district received in 2010-2013, the District is still projected to have a shortfall in excess of $3.0 million in 2013-2014 based on a status quo expenditure budget. In submitting your feedback, please give consideration to budget reductions and budget additions both from an overall district perspective and from your personal perspective as it relates to a particular school or a particular area of the district. Submit your feedback online via http://bit.ly/SD35Budget2013
1. Having caring, safe and welcoming schools 2. Providing educational opportunities to improve student success 3. Engaging in proactive planning for maintaining healthy and sustainable schools 4. Being responsible stewards of district resources and, the three primary goals of the District Achievement Contract: 1. Improving transition results for our students 2. Improving literacy skills for all students 3. Improving numeracy skills for all students

Thanks to the help of Langley Pos-Abilities Society, a legally blind man was able to help his eight-year-old with his reading homework for the first time. Recently, the Society was able to give the man a magnifier machine that enlarges everything onto a screen. The pair sat at the desk and the man was easily able to follow along with the homework, said Zosia Ettenberg, founder of Langley Pos-Abilities Society. His wife wrote to Ettenberg, thanking the society, saying it has changed his way of life, and he is now starting to read again, enhancing the letters on the screen. “Without our fundraising activities, this wouldn’t be possible,” said Ettenberg. To that end, the society is holding its first pub night on Sunday, April 14 at the Artful Dodger at 200 Street and 24 Avenue. For $25, you get a buffet dinner and a drink. Doors open at 5 p.m. and buffet dinner is at 6:30 p.m. There will be door prizes, raffles and a silent and live auction. The Board of Education approved the District’s amended annual budget at its February 26th Regular Meeting. The amended budget projects that the $13.5 million operating funding deficit that existed at the end of June 2010 will be completely repaid by June 30, 2013, two years ahead of the Ministry of Education’s approved Deficit Elimination Plan. However, it will be difficult for the District to continue to experience the financial successes of the last three years in 2013-2014 due to significant cost pressures it will face next year, as illustrated below: Teacher pension increase Transition back to GST/PST system Retroactive 2.0% wage lift for CUPE (with benefits) 2013-2014 2.0% wage lift for all (with benefits) Richard Bullpit startup costs Middle school staffing Addition of trades staff Other benefit increases Utilities & waste diversion increases General inflation

School for Grades 6 to 8 scheduled to open in September, 2014 Miranda Gathercole Times Reporter
Though just a pile of gravel right now, the grounds at 20626 84 Ave. will soon encompass a new $26.2 million Yorkson area middle school. The first shovels of dirt were overturned on Friday at the groundbreaking ceremony for the new school, which is scheduled to open in September 2014. The middle school will help ease enrolment pressures currently plaguing families in the Willoughby area by serving as a transition between elementary and secondary schools. It will have a capacity for 750 Grade 6 to 8 students, allowing the Langley School District to reconfigure all other Willoughby-area elementary schools to Grades K-5 and change R.E. Mountain Secondary School to Grades 9-12. Langley is one of only seven school districts experiencing growth from Kindergarten to Grade 7 in B.C. right now, Langley MLA Mary Polak said at the ceremony. “You can see the need right in front of you as you drive down the street and see all the new townhouses popping up all over the place,” Polak said. “(The middle school) will take off so much pressure from the surrounding schools.” The school will also be built to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold standards and will include a neighbourhood learning centre with community program-

Everything is new and has never been used. The paint is glossy and smooth, the washrooms are spotless (and) the classrooms are already filled with posters and artwork.”
The Yorkson area middle school is part of a $353 million school capital plan that was announced by the provincial government in 2011. As part of the plan, four school additions, one new middle school, two new secondary schools and six school site purchases were committed across seven B.C. school districts. Langley has two other capital projects proceeding from this plan — Lynn Fripps Elementary, which opened in 2012, and Richard Bulpitt Elementary, which will open this September. Both are also in fast-growing Willoughby.

Residents’ morale ‘fantastic’ from PAGE 1
Thick black smoke enveloped the building quickly, forcing firefighters to rescue residents over their balconies instead of through the hallways. Langley City fire department isn’t saying what caused the deadly fire, only that the investigation has been concluded both by City fire investigators and by RCMP, said fire chief Rory Thompson on Monday. Dagenais said morale among the more than 100 residents displaced from their homes is “amazingly fantastic considering what they have been through,” she said. “My staff have worked very hard and I think the residents are feeling heard and cared for.” The emergency funds will help
the displaced residents until April 28. By then, it’s hoped residents from the north wing and part of the west wing will be able to move back, she said. Thompson walked through the building on Monday and said progress is being made. The restoration will be thorough, including cleaning all the ducts for smoke and painting the cinder block in the elevator shaft to seal in smoke odours. A discussion about sprinklers will be discussed through the insurance company and the City, said Dagenais. A resiliency centre will be set up, including representatives from the Salvation Army, Red Cross, ministry of social development and BC Housing.

Outstanding youth
Liberals challenged
T
he five outstanding young people who were in the running for this year’s Pete Swensson youth leadership award should cause people who bemoan the values and commitment of younger generations to rethink their positions. While there simply isn’t enough space to detail their impressive achievements in an editorial, all of which have occurred before they have even graduated from high school, Times readers can find out more about the nominees in a series of features in this issue. These stories begin on page 20. Swensson award winner Keara Graham is representative of this group of young people. A press release from the Township tells more: “A Grade 12 student at Walnut Grove Secondary School, Keara is dedicated to making an impact at her school, in the community, and in the world. Described as a “difference maker,” she is the initiator and leader of the school’s Me to We Club which has raised more than $10,000 to build a school in Haiti. Keara volunteers at Langley Gardens Retirement Community, Canadian Blood Services, and the Langley Vineyard, serves on Student Council, and mentors Grade 8 students. “Having played hockey for 10 years, Keara is co-captain of the Langley Lightning Midget A1 team and was a member of the 2011 B.C. Provincial Championship Team. A cross-country runner, she also excels in track and field, earning a fourth place finish in the 200m hurdles at the 2010 BC Summer Games. “An “A” Honour Roll and “Effort” Honour Roll student since 2008, Keara has received the WGSS Gator Award two times, was in the top three per cent in Grade 12 for the fall term, and has served as a member of her school’s Humanitarian Club and Special Event Planners and Activities Committee. “A columnist for her school’s online newspaper, Keara is also a member of the Bilingual Debate Club who participated in the 2012 Provincial Championships and has served as a volunteer and referee with Langley Girls Ice Hockey. “A recipient of the 2013 Global Citizen Scholarship, she was one of ten students chosen from across Canada who will take a trip to Costa Rica later this month for the Global Student Leaders Summit.” She and many other Langley young people are already making a difference in this world.

n 1991, the government was in disarray. The premier had resigned after four years of power which saw a divided caucus, scandals, and a huge drop in popularity for the governing Social Credit Party. It was also the last time the provincial NDP had a hope of winning a riding in Richmond. While the upstart Liberals won all three ridings in the 1991 election, former NDP MLA Harold Steves lost by 610 votes to Allan Warnke in Richmond-Steveston. Steves, Richmond’s MLA from 1972 to 1975, likely would have won if not for a sudden Liberal surge after their leader, Gordon Wilson, floored the competition in a televised debate. In the four elections since, Richmond has been a Liberal stronghold and the NDP hasn’t been close. In the last election, RichmondSteveston Liberal MLA John Yap won with 61 per cent of the vote in 2009. The NDP only managed 27 per cent. However, with the BC Liberals sagging in popularity, things could get a lot closer in Richmond this time. The botched foisting of the HST on the province was not popular in Richmond (though you can pin that one on Premier Christy Clark’s predecessor, Gordon Campbell). While British Columbians voted 54.73 per cent to quash the harmonized sales tax, in all three Richmond ridings, the vote against the HST was higher. The ethnic votes scandal, where the Liberals clumsily plotted to use government resources to score cynical “quick wins” with the ethnic community, backfired for the Liberals and cost Yap a seat in cabinet. Richmond’s diverse multicultural community was not impressed. Election campaigns always have their own dynamic. Clark is a leader who could well snatch an electoral wipeout from the jaws of the defeat. In terms of past history and organization, the Liberals are still the favourites in Richmond. However, the NDP and the Conservatives have responded with some strong candidates. Expect an entertaining race. —Richmond Review The Langley Times is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. Summer school needs to be inclusive Editor: This year, the Langley School District is offering free summer school sessions to elementary students. These classes are not intended to replace a grade level, but to help students achieve better success with subjects they may currently struggle with. This is a great idea and I hope many students take advantage of it. The problem that
I have with this current set-up though, is that the district will not be providing SEAs (Special Education Assistants) to those that need it, due to budget constraints. At the same time, parents will not be able to provide their own SEAs, as this would be a conflict with the union. This means that students with Down syndrome or autism who need the extra help from the summer
session will not receive it. Being that this is a public school system and we all fund it, we should all be able to use it equally. I hope that the board of education will find a way to make this summer program inclusive of everyone, as currently it is leaving people behind. Katrina Quinn, Langley
Council members show lack of foresight Editor: Re: From the editor (The Times, March 26). Was the fact that many members of Langley Township and City councils attended the luncheon with Premier Christy Clark just a matter of common affiliation? These are well-established, status quo folks. Or was it a disrespectful snub, and real naiveté by our local elected officials, to stay away from the addresses by NDP leader Adrian Dix and Conservative leader John Cummins?
There appears to have been a deliberate attempt to ignore other options. Whatever their strategy, it smacks of bad taste. It shows a lack of foresight and a lack of wisdom. Their true colours and bias were shown. That sort of expression by a local council leads to other scenarios. Perception becomes a question on policy. Ideological influence does have a real effect on planning and overall management of our Township. Money is power. The last election showed that. When the election disclosures of cam-
paign spending came out and were published in The Times, it told the complete story. This does become a province-wide issue. It is players versus payers. It is good stewardship versus manipulation for personal gain, or popularity. Do we have real balanced governance, or a charade? The resolve is blowing in the wind for now. Harvey D. Schultz, Aldergrove
Oil and gas projects are valuable for B.C. Editor: Finally a clear, to the point analysis of the value of oil and gas projects in the province. Jim Shepard (The Times, April 4) is no one’s puppet. His business and personal reputation and acumen is without peer, taking Finning to one of the largest Cat dealers in the world. He has a firm grasp of project values to
First Nations, knowing of the Syncrude system, the most comprehensive in the world. The naysayers only focus on one thing, with no alternative except cancellation. This is not a solution. Currently project management people are being solicited for Kitimat work with an employment term of 36 months. This
would also apply to infrastructure workers and trades. The more B.C. residents who are employed on projects such as the refinery, the more it ensures that project and government requirements are met with no impact to the environment. Terry Brenan, Aldergrove
Liberals grasping at straws with refinery Editor: Now we have Jim Shepard (letters, The Times, April 4) promoting the Liberal pipe dream of the Kitimat oil refinery concept to refine the Northern Gateway pipeline’s product. This is the same (insider and former personal policy adviser) Jim Shepard guy who volunteers as Christy Clark’s pit bully, orchestrating all the multi-million personal attack ads on radio and TV against the NDP. You know those nauseating dumb ads which cause you to change the station and channel immediately. They have had the opposite results, and actually increased the NDP’s ratings. We were led to believe that million-
aire B.C. businessman David Black was researching the feasibility of such a refinery. Well, it looks like we taxpayers funded an expensive feasibility study paid for through the Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training. The study was done by a California firm Navigant Consulting Inc., is titled “Review of the Proposed Kitimat Refinery Project,” ‘Technical Assessment and Asian Supply/ Demand Analysis.” Black didn’t get where he is by being stupid. The Liberals are trying to hype this as another big utopian lotto like LNG. Then we can all hold debt-free hands and sing Kumbaya. The refinery is in a very preliminary
research stage with no identified supply or market, and the odds of it proceeding appear slim, hope and prayer. Black’s financing through the Oppenheimer Investments Group appears mysterious, and since it’s being used as an election issue, demands transparency. The NDP indicate it’s another desperate Liberal PR stunt, and suggest Rich Coleman is being willingly duped in promising jobs by promoting this. It appears the BC Liberals are grasping at straws trying to get some traction for the election. Roland Seguin, Langley
They’re known to police, but not to prison guards Editor: Re:”Two seniors attacked in Douglas Park,” (The Times, April 4). Why is it that the yeggs involved in these The
type of incidents are always “well known to police,” but never seem to be “well known to prison guards?”
Brian Johnson, Willoughby
Not As
Advertised Editor: We had a fire at our home on March 1. You ran the story about the fire at our home on 50 Avenue in the March 7 edition of The Times. We need some help and we don’t know who to contact. We are dealing with our insurance company. We would like to know if someone could tell if replacement cost insurance means that we only get get the depreciated value. When we make the purchases and send in our receipts, we are only going to be reimbursed for a portion of the cost. I always thought replacement meant that is exactly what you get. Is this a bunch of lies? Our insurance policy states that we get the replacement cost, but that is not what is happening. Our big purchases include two full bedroom suites. We were told by our adjuster that we will only be getting $8,000 of the $11,000 it will cost to replace the items, and that it is up to us to cover the balance. After we make the purchases, we are to send in the receipts to get reimbursed. Does everybody have $3,000 hanging around for such an emergency? The company has also hired an independent adjuster to go through every item and put a value on it. We just started this process today, and it will take quite a few days to do this. So far, the adjuster has ripped off my grandchildren of at least $600 by depreciating their toys and talking my daughter into settling for $400 instead of at least $1,000. She told us that $400 should buy quite a few toys. Is this how it’s done? I think by the time this adjuster is done, it will have cost the company at least $3,000 for her services. We need some help, please. Pam Kugler, Langley

Township honours volunteers
Langley Township volunteers were honoured Thursday night at the annual volunteer appreciation banquet. Three trophies to outstanding volunteers were also handed out. The Pete Swensson award for outstanding community, athletic and educational achievement by high school students went to Keara Graham. See page 20 for stories on all the nominees. The John and Muriel Arnason Award to a couple involved in volunteering went to Wayne and Cindy Van Geel, and the Eric Flowerdew award for volunteering went to John Jackman. Jackman is a member of the pioneering Jackman family and has dedicated years of his life to keep Aldergrove’s history alive. In 1989, the Aldergrove Heritage Society was formed to compile a history of the area into a book. He was chairman of the group, and he and other volunteers spent countless hours researching and writing to produce “The Place Between.” He also worked to save the F.J. Hart Building. Built in 1892, it was the first telephone office in the Fraser Valley and he was determined not to see it bulldozed. It now stands as the Aldergrove Telephone Museum. A member of the Elks Club of Canada for 45 years, he

John Jackman, Keara Graham and Cindy and Wayne Van Geel were honoured with trophies at Thursday’s annual Langley Township volunteer appreciation dinner. has served with the Aldergrove Elks for 22 years, helping children with speech and hearing problems, funding camps, sponsoring the Aldergrove Bruins hockey team, and contributing to drug and alcohol awareness programs. For 17 years, he has been instrumental in holding an annual plant and garden sale that raises money for special needs children. Along with his brother Keith, John worked with the Township of Langley to help create a cairn commemorating the contributions of their great-grandfather Philip, a Royal Engineer from England who settled in Aldergrove in 1872 and later
became mayor. Last year he allowed a large crew of Aldergrove Business Association volunteers to plant pumpkin seeds on his farm in anticipation of the Wall of Jacko-Lanterns Halloween event, and he plans to do it again this year. The Van Geels are heavily involved in sports, and in particular with the Valley Ball Hockey Association. Wayne was president from 2010-12, while Cindy served as secretary. They have both been involved in many other community activities. See www.langleytimes.com for more details about all the award winners.

Langley Sports Medicine By Kristyl Clark Since opening its doors in the Langley Events Centre three years ago, the Langley Sports Medicine Clinic has helped countless athletes of all ages and levels to get back into the game. The state-of-the-art facility – a multidisciplinary practice offering advanced rehabilitative techniques under one roof – is the brainchild of Jamie Rempel, a former Athletic Therapist with the B.C. Lions and the Vancouver Women’s Whitecaps. Even with Langley Sports Medicine Clinic’s top-of-the-line equipment and modern ‘airy’ atmosphere, the facility maintains a mom ‘n’ pop feel that is noticeable as soon as you step inside. “We’re all pretty friendly and easy going around here,” said Rempel, the clinic’s owner/director, whose passion for physical sports rehabilitation is evident in the way he relates to each patient that walks through the front door. “We’re not just about treating an injury; we’re about giving athletes the extra tools and the knowledge to understand their injury… to understand their pain and how to maximize the
healing process.” While Langley Sports Medicine Clinic is the official sports clinic for the Langley Rams and the Langley Rivermen, it takes the same dynamic approach to benefit everyone, from the elite athlete to the Sunday morning golfer who is determined to get back onto the green. “It doesn’t matter what team they play for or what level they are at,” said Rempel. “It is those who are willing to accept the limitations, the pain and the discomfort… the ones who are willing to trust our knowledge who are the success stories. And we have many of those here!” The benefit of any multi-disciplined clinic is the access to a supply network of different healthcare professionals under one roof. Langley Sports

F
irst, the annual Langley Has Talent competition crowned a singer. Then, a dancer. Who will follow in the footsteps of 2011 champion Tiffany Desrosiers and 2012’s first place performer, Lauren Tokiwa, remains to be seen, but organizer Peter Luongo is confident that audiences will be treated to another impressive showdown when the third annual talent competition hits the stage at Christian Life Assembly later this month. “It’s absolutely incredible to again witness the level of talent coming out of Langley,” said Luongo. “It so far exceeds what we had in our first year.” This year’s performers will include rappers and hip hop artists as well as two bands and a number of solo singers.
Third annual Langley Has Talent contest begins on April 18, with semifinal competition
“Music is obviously playing a major role,” said Luongo. “And we’re delighted to have a number of dance acts.” Semifinal competition — featuring performances by the top 24 acts who auditioned earlier this spring — will take place on Saturday, April 20 with the final contest happening two weeks later, on Saturday, May 4. A panel of judges will select the top 12 performers to move on from the semifinal, but among those acts will be a fan favourite, chosen by audience ballot. Luongo expects the vote will once again be a popular component of the contest. “I stand and listen; it’s so cool to hear the banter in the lobby (of CLA) afterward, and in the community in the two weeks between (the semifinal and final competitions),” he said. “There’s buzz — discussion about who
should make it. “It’s a community event. People who came to cheer on a friend become invested in the event,” said Luongo. Among this year’s acts are several returning performers who are ready to take another shot at glory, along with plenty of fresh faces, said Luongo. Once again, they will be competing for cash and industry prize packages — $2,500 for first place, $1,500 for second place and $1,000 for third. In order, the winners will choose from a prize pool that includes sponsorship by a talent agency, post-secondary scholarships and a professional photo shoot. Once the top 12 have been selected, voters can name a wild card finalist from the remaining acts, by casting a ballot in an online vote at langleytimes.com. The link to vote for the “lucky 13” spot will go live at noon on Wednesday, April 24 and
continue until Thursday, May 2. One person who registers to vote will win dinner and VIP access to the show on the night of the final competition. Presented by the four Rotary Clubs of Langley, Langley Has Talent is intended to increase awareness about the need for a dedicated performing arts centre in the community as well as to raise a bit of money toward the cause. “Our focus is simple,” said Luongo. “We want the community to be aware of of how great the talent in Langley is … and that we really should have a theatre in which these people should be performing.” Tickets for Langley Has Talent are available at the Langley Times office, 20258 Fraser Hwy. and online at langleyhastalent.ca. Christian Life Assembly is located at 21277 56 Ave. Showtime is 7 p.m. on both nights.

angley Community Music School welcomes international pianist Avan Yu, along with the Borealis String Quartet to the Rose Gellert Hall on April 13 at 7:30 p.m. “Avan has put together a fascinating and musically diverse programme you don’t want to miss,” said Elizabeth Bergmann, artistic director concerts for LCMS. “He’ll play the famous last Sonata by Mozart — a work that is full energy and life. “He will also perform the first book of Etudes by Debussy, masterpieces of French impressionist writing which explore the technical and musical challenges inherent in most of Debussy’s piano music.” The program also includes the famous Hungarian Rhapsody no. 12 by Franz Liszt. Yu will be joined by the Borealis String Quartet to form a powerful chamber ensemble and present the Brahms Piano Quintet. “The Quintet is considered by many to be one of his best large scale works written when he was only 35 years old,” said Bergmann. “It is a dramatic work full of energy and widely regarded as pinnacle in quintet writing.”

A novel approach to writing Ian Weir to read from his work of fiction on April 25 Langley’s Ian Weir has created and written for some of the best known Canadian television shows of the last 15 years, including Arctic Air, Flashpoint and Edgemont. He’s written plays for both the stage and for radio and, along the way, penned three young adult novels, a newspaper humour column and a libretto for an alternative rock opera based on the legend of Faust. On April 25 the Clearbrook Library and The Reach Gallery Museum will co-host a reading by Weir from his 2009 novel, Daniel O’ Thunder. It tells the story of a prizefighter’s attempt to defeat the devil. Set in the 1850s in London, England, Daniel O’Thunder interweaves the voices of several narrators to tell the story of a troubled but charismatic prize-fighting evangelist who challenges none other than the Devil to a battle in the ring. A former pugilist with a right fist known as “The Hammer of Heaven,” O’Thunder disap-

‘Even small actions have large impacts’ Keara Graham recipient of the 2013 Pete Swensson Outstanding Community Youth Award Gary ahuja Times Sports
L
ike many teenagers may choose to do, Keara Graham spent her 18th birthday in Vancouver. But while some may be focused on celebrating their big day with a shopping excursion or dinner at a nice restaurant, Graham had other ideas. Graham, along with five of her friends, spent March 27 in Vancouver committing 18 acts of kindness, some were planned while others were random. “Take the focus off me and impact others,” Graham explained about her rationale. Some of the planned acts of kindness were visiting a seniors residence with handwritten letters while another was delivering flowers and a thank-you letter to a nurse. The random acts included buying Tim Hortons for strangers, giving hot chocolate to a homeless person and plugging peoples’ parking metres. And with actions like these, it should come as little surprise that Graham is the recipient of the 2013 Pete Swensson Outstanding Community Youth Award. She received her award last week (April 4) at the Township of Langley’s annual volunteer appreciation awards. Graham is intent on making a difference in the lives of others, whether in a Third World country or her own community. “I just think there is an irreplaceable joy from helping others,” she explained. “I think with passion and determination — and if you step outside of your comfort zone and confront what is wrong in the world — you can really change the world. “I think knowledge and education are so important to bring about that change,” she added. “I truly believe that no action is too small. Even small actions have large impacts.” The other nominees were Morgan Buckner, Micaela Dickhof, Michael Miller and Adam Schonewille (see pages 21, 22 and 23). The fact Graham won the award comes as little surprise to staff at Walnut Grove Secondary, where she is a Grade 12 student. “She is a tireless worker,” said Walnut Grove principal George Kozlovic. “This girl will make a difference in lives.” Kozlovic took Graham to a We Day event a few years back. We Day serves to bring together a generation of youth to be engaged in changing the world through an inspirational event and
year-long educational program. It is an initiative of Free The Children, an international charity and educational partner that works with schools to implement the We Act program. After attending the event, Graham was inspired to create a Me to We Club at Walnut Grove. “I just felt so empowered to make a difference and I wanted to transpire that,” she said. “So I initiated the club at school to take action and over the past few years, we have held awareness events and fundraisers. It is so inspiring.” Through the Walnut Grove Me to We Club, they have raised more than $13,000, which will be used to build a school and a well they have adopted in Haiti. Kozlovic said that Graham is surrounded by a good core of people who have helped her in the club. But there is no mistaking who makes the club tick. “She is the driver, she is the leader,” he said. “She is the inspiration behind the group.” “And her actions are far beyond what you would expect to have from a teenager.” Graham is very involved in helping her community as well, volunteering at Langley Gardens Retirement Community, Canadian Blood Services and the Langley Vineyard. She also serves on the Walnut Grove student council and is part of the school’s Gator Quality Ambassador Program, mentoring Grade 8 students. Gary AHUJA/Langley Times “Keara is an amazing young Keara Graham was the recipient of the 2013 Pete Swensson Outstanding Community Youth lady,” said Angela Mallinson, a counsellor at the school. “Keara is Award on Thursday night. Award honours Langley’s youth
Coaching way to give back A coach helped her and now Micaela Dickhof hopes to do the same with others Gary ahuja Times Sports
Meet the finalists for the 2013 Pete Swensson Outstanding Community Youth Award The Pete Swensson Outstanding Community Youth Award is given to a Langley student in Grades 8 to 12, from one of the area’s secondary schools, in recognition of his or her athletic, scholastic, and community efforts. Personal qualities such as leadership, work ethic, and initiative play a major role in the evaluation process. Pete Swensson was an internationally recognized athlete and photographer and an outstanding member of the Langley community. The Township of Langley’s first Recreation Director, he was the originator of the Langley Walk. Swensson was committed to the overall development of youth, and this award is named in his honour. The award was won by Walnut Grove’s Keara Graham (see page 20). The other nominees were Morgan Buckner, Micaela Dickhof, Michael Miller and Adam Schonewille.

Micaela Dickhof was one of five nominees for the Pete Swensson Outstanding Community Youth Award. The softball player attends Langley Christian School.
For Micaela Dickhof, getting into coaching was an easy decision. “I have had a really inspiring coach who has taught me everything I know about softball,” she explained. “He was kind of my inspiration to give back to the community.” She was referring to Jim Ullock, who has coached Dickhof for the past seven years in the Cloverdale Minor Softball Association. So for the past three or four years, the 17-yearold Dickhof — a Grade 12 student at Langley Christian Secondary — has given back as a coach. She teaches the aspiring players during off-season
clinics in the association’s Learn to Play program. “I like seeing how they improve,” she explained about the joy of coaching. “I remember being that young and learning from coaches as well.” Dickhof also plays basketball and volleyball for her high school. But Dickhof’s involvement in giving back stretches away from the ball diamond. The ‘A’ student is enrolled in the Langley Christian Leadership program, serves as a teachers’ assistant, and helps plan the school’s annual Christmas banquet. She is also involved as a volunteer with the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Langley through the Teen in School Mentoring Program. Dickhof works with a Grade 5 student at Langley
Christian’s elementary school, meeting with her once a week. “It is about developing positive relationships and mentoring in a one-on-one situation,” Dickhof said. “I like sharing my experiences with her.” “It is just a chance for me to explore with her and discover and teach her what I know and what I have learned over the years.” Add it all together, and time is of the essence. “I do keep busy (but) I enjoy being involved,” she said. “I am a fairly driven and organized person so I keep a planner and like lining everything up to make sure all my deadlines are met.” Dickhof said she will be attending UBC next year, while also playing on the women’s softball team, and plans on studying sciences. She hopes to one day do something in the medical field, possibly involving kids.
Schonewille excels in classroom, on the field Helping others is a good feeling Gary ahuja Times Sports
Like a good brother, Adam Schonewille listened to his sister. His sister had recommended that Schonewille get involved with some of the clubs at school. So he did. “After that, I just liked doing that,” he said. “I like knowing that you are helping people and being actively involved in our community.” The 18-year-old is a Grade 12 student at Aldergrove Community Secondary School. He serves on the school’s student council, environment club, and represented the school at the B.C. Youth Parliament in Victoria. As part of the school’s

leadership program, he has spent many hours helping out in the Downtown Eastside and organizing the Alzheimer Walk for Memories. Schonewille is also involved in Me to We, holds fundraisers for children in Africa, as well as the Halloween for Hunger and We Create Change initiatives. And Schonewille also excels in the classroom, as one of the strongest academic students to come out of Aldergrove Community Secondary in years. Schonewille has earned top student honours in 27 courses and has never received a grade lower than an A. He plans to attend either UBC or Simon Fraser University next year to study engineering. Michael Miller was a nominee for the Pete Swensson Outstanding Community Youth Award. The multi-sport athlete attends D.W. Poppy Secondary.
The fact that Michael Miller is involved in so many things should come as little surprise to those who know him. “I am kind of like a giant tryhard,” he said. “I do a bunch of sports and extracurriculars around the school.” Miller is an 18-year-old Grade 12 student at D.W. Poppy Secondary. At school, he is on the volleyball, basketball, track and field, cross-country, rugby and wrestling teams. He is also a black belt in taekwondo.
