Full house for ‘Men of Hope’ By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star
A charity poker challenge brought out celebrities and a packed house for the Men of Hope’s fundraiser on Saturday evening at Aldergrove Legion. A final tally on funds raised was estimated at $25,000. Event co-organizers Andy Bhatti and Lee Ferrill were stoked with enthusiasm and gratitude for the countless contributions that night. The Men of Hope, founded in 2010, is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising public awareness through public speaking, community charity events, advocacy and education surrounding childhood victimization (see website: www.menofhope.ca). Twenty-nine year old Ferrill, the founder of the Men of Hope, is a motivational speaker, facilitator and therapist based in Ontario. As a survivor of childhood victimization, Ferrill continues to be a strong advocate for survivors of childhood victimization. “This is not an issue of gender.

A little girl bakes up a storm for grandma By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star
A little girl’s love for her late grandmother culminated in a cupcake baking and decorating spree that should earn a mention in the Guinness Book of Records. Last Wednesday, 11-year-old Megan Day and her mother Kerry delivered 400 decorated cupcakes to customers at Parkside Elementary School and White Spot. It was only the first batch, as Megan has more cupcake orders to fill on the first Wednesday of May and June too. However, that first batch raised $870 of Megan’s goal of $1,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society’s Colours of Cancer campaign, so she is expecting to exceed her fundraising goal. All of the work is in memory of Megan’s grandmother, Jane Moore, who passed away last June at age 54 of ovarian cancer. Megan’s mother, Kerry, has a
home-based business of making cakes for weddings and special events, but admits she started panicking when the orders starting growing exponentially. “It was a little girl’s idea,” Kerry told The Star. “My mom was like a second mom to Megan, and my best friend. She was an amazing lady who would have done anything for anyone. We feel blessed that if only for a short time she was ours. We saw so many people and families struggling with this terrible disease while in and out of the hospital. It really opened our eyes.” Their extended family is closeknit, so when Jane and her husband Wayne moved to Aldergrove from Surrey, both Kerry and her sister Donna also found homes for their families in Aldergrove shortly after. Kerry gives full credit to Parkside school for being so supportive: “Parkside was all for it, the PAC put it on their website with order forms — and many of the
buyers put extra money in, saying keep the change for the Cancer Society.” Kerry also enlisted the help of family members in filling the orders, and delivery went smoothly on April 3. “It’s an overwhelming success, and we thank everyone,” said Kerry. Young Megan has also dedicated her solo dance with Aldergrove’s Studio One to her grandmother — a solo to the music of Faith Hill’s “There You’ll Be.” “It’s an idea she got from a bracelet Jane bought her. There’s a different coloured gem for each type of cancer, and the colour for ovarian cancer is teal,” said Kerry. “Megan’s dance costume is teal.” Megan has performed her dance at dance festivals in Surrey and Chilliwack and will be performing it on the May long weekend in Whistler. After making so many cupcakes the dance should be a Megan Day with her late grandmother, Jane Moore. cake walk for Megan.

New study on pool design proposals due this month By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star

Overview of proposed Aldergrove recreation centre on Fraser Highway.
The new recreation complex planned for downtown Aldergrove will change the face of this community. Langley Township council is still debating the details of the proposals, based on public and consultants’ input, but has made a commitment to begin the construction work on the $35 million project in early 2015. The Township acquired the five acre site, the former Aldergrove Elementary School, this year and plans to retain the century-old “heritage school” building, which would be renovated for use as a new, larger community library. The Township’s “option 3” plan would see construction of a new ice arena on the south side of the old school, along with a fitness
centre that would offer the popular exercise and weight equipment as well as yoga and pilates programs and classes. The arena site would be excavated so that the ice surface was sunken, allowing level access to the 400-seat viewing area. This is also for aesthetic reasons, so that neighboring residents would not see a two-storey arena wall. There would also be meeting rooms in this area. Plans call for a public swimming pool on the west side of the old school, and there would be three water features: a hot tub; a small leisure pool that would have warmer water preferred by youngsters and seniors as well as two 20-metre lap lanes; and a larger pool that would have somewhat cooler water. The exact configuration of the larger pool has not been decided yet, but would be a minimum of
25-metres length. A consultant’s report on the costs and options for the main pool will be received by council by the end of April, and will provide details on various pool lengths, numbers of swimming lanes and a deep end for diving and competition use. There would also be a main lobby-foyer that would provide public access to all of the facilities, and a 215-vehicle parking lot in the south-west corner of the lot. Township council is not inclined to building the facility in phases as it would create logistical problems and increase costs, according to councillor Charlie Fox. However, council is committed to having the first shovel in the ground by spring of 2015 so that it would be completed and open to the public by 2016.

response team. Const. Ian MacDonald said police seized a sawed-off shotgun from the home, as well as small quantities of cocaine and meth. MacDonald said the APD was involved because of information uncovered in Abbotsford. “This home has been reported to be a bit of a hang-out for a number of individuals reported to be using drugs and causing problems,”
he said. As is most often the case with drug raids, the people involved likely have gang ties, although at a low level, MacDonald added. The six people who were detained have all been released, as the investigation continues. Betty Gilbert Middle and Aldergrove Community Secondary were both locked down for about an hour during the bust, as a precautionary measure.
The Canada Border Services Agency announced that Tyson Saviro Santolla pleaded guilty in Richmond Provincial Court to using someone else’s passport to enter Canada. On March 26, 2013, Santolla was sentenced by Richmond Provincial Court to six months of incarceration (time served). On July 11, 2012, Santolla arrived at the Vancouver International Airport on a flight from Australia and presented border services officers with a passport belonging to his twin brother. CBSA officials had been alerted by
Australian authorities that Santolla, who was out on bail for a drug smuggling charge in that country, might attempt to evade the law and return to Vancouver. Through investigations, they found that Santolla’s twin brother had flown out of Australia, but there was no record of his re-entry. Border services officers arrested Santolla on arrival. The next day the CBSA’s Criminal Investigations Division swore charges against Santolla for possessing a passport to establish a person’s identity, a contravention of s.122(1) (a) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA).

The Bradner Flower Show is one of the best kept and most revered traditions in Bradner’s long list of historic and community events. Organizers plan to celebrate Bradner’s agricultural history this year by honouring the daffodil in all of its golden glory. In addition to the hundreds of varieties of daffodils on display, the 85th Bradner Flower Show promises some great surprises this year. Rather than a high profile celebrity guest at the opening ceremony, Bradner will be honouring two area pioneers, Les Fatkin and brother Richie Fatkin, whose father started the show in 1928. B.C. Minister of Finance, Mike de Jong will be on hand to bring greetings from the province, along with Richard Bullock, chair of the Agricultural Land Commission, who has agreed to share a few words regarding agriculture in our area. This year’s show will offer all of the timehonoured favourites, including great displays, delicious food in the tea room, crafts, artwork and music. There will be loads of plants, shrubs and cut flowers on sale at

Students visit Seasonal Local Produce Vimy Ridge memorial Students from Aldergrove and Brookswood secondary schools visited all of the main Canadian World War 1 and World War 2 memorials during their recent spring break tour of Europe. They laid wreaths or placed poppies at each site to recognize the courageous efforts of our fallen soldiers. At Vimy, 60,000 Canadian soldiers are commemorated from World War 1. Their names are inscribed on the walls of the monument. This photo, taken from the back of Vimy, shows Mother Canada grieving her lost sons and the twin towers, one representing Canada and the other France. This huge commemorative park is actually considered Canadian soil. It includes restored trenches, two cemetaries, and underground tunnels. A special guest of Aldergrove Secondary is holding the flag at the right hand side of the photo. Marie-Christine Allart is a Vimy resident, along with her father who is a French World War 2 veteran. She spent the morning with the students and spoke to them about Vimy and the Canadians after the wreath laying ceremony. All of the students received special Vimy commemorative medals. VICTORIA –This is the first of a series of policy commentaries on the four main parties contesting the 2013 B.C. election. I’m starting with the B.C. Green Party, which has higher than usual hopes for the 2013 election. It was also the first to put out a substantial policy document, albeit one that is still being debated and altered. Green Book 2013 continues the Utopian positions that only a party with no chance of forming a government has the luxury to put forward. For example, they would double the area of parks in B.C., but take 100 years to do it. Immediately, they would almost double the carbon tax, taking it from seven to 12 cents on a litre of gasoline. Greens would extend this steeply increased carbon tax to industries such as natural gas and cement production. Leader Jane Sterk told me she expects cement producers and the like to adapt, rather than shut down as their competitive position erodes. And what about the extra billions in carbon tax revenues? Sterk says most should continue to go to income tax reductions, as is now the case, because the purpose is to change consumption patterns, not to increase overall tax revenue. Most, but not all. “We think there is an argument to be made for
It’s still easy being Green
putting, for a period of time, the increased revenue from the carbon tax into creating the infrastructure that allows people to benefit from a carbon tax,” Sterk said. That means transit, and potentially retrofits of homes and other buildings as well. Tax increase aside, this is essentially the NDP position too. The Greens emphasize wind and geothermal power. Sterk faces the awkward task of arguing against hydroelectric expansion. A Green government would cancel the Site C dam project on the Peace River. Sterk says it would only serve as a subsidy to liquefied natural gas exports, which she doesn’t believe materialize as international competitors develop. The Greens’ star candidate, University of Victoria climate scientist Andrew Weaver, agrees. Both point to vast reserves of Russian gas that may well get to Asia more quickly and cheaply. Sterk said the 35,000 existing gas wells in northern B.C. “are not going to be shut down.” Actually, in the absence of LNG exports, that is exactly what would happen to many of them. The U.S. has its own shale gas supplies, and is B.C.’s only current export customer. Converting transport trucks and BC Ferries to LNG fuel isn’t going to maintain the
vast industry blooming in northern B.C. The official Green Party position is to place a moratorium on B.C. gas drilling while a comprehensive water use policy is developed. Current innovations such as reusing municipal wastewater are ignored. The Green platform also demands disclosure of chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing, which the B.C. Oil and Gas Commission has already done. If one were to design a self-fulfilling prophecy that B.C.’s LNG project is doomed to fail, the Green Party platform would be a good place to start. Reading through Green Book 2013, I’m left with the impression that much of it remains calculated as a soothing message for urban voters who have been convinced it’s courageous to drive their cars down to an anti-tanker protest. If Weaver, Sterk or any other Greens get elected, it will be surfing a wave of protest votes from people weary of the B.C. Liberals and the NDP. It will not be due to the practicality or even internal consistency of their polices. It’s still pretty easy being Green. Editor: I am writing this letter to express my serious health and safety concern related to the alarming presence of ‘legal’ marijuana growing operations located in our residential area and other family neighbourhoods within the Township of Langley and other municipalities. The 2012 information on Health Canada’s website indicates that the licences have ‘grown exponentially’ to 26,000 over the past few years and they acknowledge that this has ‘unintended consequences for public health, safety and security.’ Based on the arrival of a number of new grow ops in our neighbourhood, we can correctly assume that the number of Health Canada licenses since the 2012 report has grown even further. We recently discovered that the residence next door to our residence is only one of many similar ‘licenced’ production locations in our neighbourhood and within the Langleys. Over the past few months, subsequent to recent sale of the residence, we had noted escalating suspicious activity in the home and large detached garage. We had noticed that the blinds of the home were closed at all times, however, lights on both the exterior and interior of the house were on continually, day and night. Vehicles arriving to and leaving from the residence often tended to come in and out after dark. Numerous new exterior ventilation units were installed around the exterior of the detached garage within a few feet of our property and were running continuously; additional electrical and water lines were run alongside and into the detached garage; and cameras and motion lights were installed on the building. Then we started noticing the distinctive skunk smell of growing marijuana. We made a report to the drug division of the Langley RCMP. Unfortunately, the RCMP, though expressing their own frustration, are not able to do anything as there are two licences issued by Health Canada, giving the occupants of this address licence to grow marijuana. The licensees are not required to go through any local permit or inspection process and no one has authority to inspect or regulate these holders of Health Canada licenses. How can this be allowed to happen in a family oriented residential neighbourhood? This marijuana growing operation and others like it present a serious health and safety concern to us as adjacent residents as well as to our neighbourhood
at large. Clearly by the fact that the occupants have had to install perimeter cameras around the detached garage (including some that look into our backyard), they are concerned about potential infiltration of their grow operation, most likely by individuals with criminal intent. At times the skunk smell of the marijuana is pervasive and unavoidable in our yard and inside our home if we open the windows. The fans and ventilation units adjacent to our fence are running most of the time and cause significant vibration felt through the ground well into our backyard. High-pitched pressured noises are heard from the building at various times of the day and night (likely high pressure CO2 which is used to speed up the plant growth). Other neighbours have noticed power lapses, surges and loss not previously experienced in our neighbourhood. Last week the hydro transformer on the block did a meltdown and neighbours were advised that the power draw on the transformer was now one-third over its designed capacity. This was a serious fire and contamination near-miss for the neighbourhood. The Canadian Association of Firefighters points out that the rates of fires in or caused by these grow ops are 24 times higher than the average home. Hydro customers had to absorb the cost of a larger replacement transformer to accommodate the electrical draw for the grow op as hydro are obligated to install transformers to meet the draw. The next day, a municipal water line on the property burst. At cost to taxpayers, Township staff had to come out and repair the ruptured water line. This experience has been a rude awakening for our quiet residential neighbourhood. We have been in touch with our local and federal elected officials who are agreeable to hosting a public forum on May 15 (specific times and locations to be announced). I would very much appreciate if you could highlight this health and safety issue in our local paper and help to promote awareness of the upcoming forum. We need our regulatory bodies to take action to ensure these grow ops are relocated out of residential areas to insure our neighbourhoods are safe. I would be happy to have this letter published as a letter to the editor, however, request that my name and contact information is not included due to potential safety risk. Langley Township honours volunteers Aldergrove Star
Langley Township volunteers were honoured Thursday night at the annual volunteer appreciation banquet, held at Langley Events Centre. Three trophies to outstanding volunteers were also handed out. The Pete Swensson award for outstanding community, athletic and educational achievement by high school students went to Keara Graham. Nominees for the 2013 Pete Swensson Outstanding Community Youth Award were: Morgan Buckner of Langley Fundamental Middle and Secondary School; Micaela Dickof of Langley Christian School; Keara Graham of Walnut Grove Secondary School; Michael Miller of D.W. Poppy Secondary School and Adam Schonewille of Aldergrove Community Secondary School. Winner of the trophy was Graham. A Grade 12 student at Walnut Grove Secondary School, she is dedicated to making an impact at her school, in the community, and in the world. Described as a “difference maker,” she is the initiator and leader of the school’s Me to We Club which has raised more than $10,000 to build a school in Haiti. Graham volunteers at Langley Gardens Retirement Community, Canadian Blood Services, and the Langley Vineyard, serves on Student Council, and mentors Grade 8 students. Having played hockey for 10 years, she is cocaptain of the Langley Lightning Midget A1 team and was a member of the 2011 BC Provincial Championship Team. She is currently her team’s leading scorer. A cross country runner, she also excels in track and field, earning a fourth place finish in the 200m Hurdles at the 2010 BC Summer Games. An “A” Honour Roll
and “Effort” Honour Roll student since 2008, she has received the WGSS Gator Award two times, was in the top 3% in Grade 12 for the fall term, and has served as a member of her school’s Humanitarian Club and Special Event Planners And Activities Committee. A recipient of the 2013 Global Citizen Scholarship, she was one of ten students chosen from across Canada who will take a trip to Costa Rica later this month for the Global Student Leaders Summit. The John and Muriel Arnason Award went to Wayne and Cindy Van Geel. For almost 18 years, the Van Geels have been living in Langley and raising their three children. Their children are involved in a number of activities, and those organizations have greatly benefited from Cindy and Wayne’s involvement. Wayne has been a head coach with the Langley United Youth Soccer Association for various age groups and levels, and also served as the Director of Gyms. Cindy was a “soccer mom” who drove kids to practices and games but also served as team manager, making sure the teams ran smoothly, along with Wayne’s coaching. Wayne’s coaching skills were also utilized by the Langley Girls Football Club, and by the Valley Ball Hockey Association. The sport of ball hockey came into the Van Geel family in 2003 and Wayne started as an assistant coach in the Peanut division. He coached several teams over the years and was also involved with the rep teams participating in the Western Challenge Cup and the National competition, held in Alberta. Both Wayne and Cindy became part of the Valley Ball Hockey Association executive,
Like a good brother, Adam Schonewille listened to his sister. His sister had recommended that Schonewille get involved with some of the clubs at school. So he did. “After that, I just liked doing that,” he said. “I like knowing that you are helping people and being actively involved in our community.”

Cindy then moved on to the role as Registrar Director – no easy task when registration numbers reached 1,150 players one season! Cindy later became Secretary of the VBHA while her husband became Head of Coaches, Vice-President, and finally President from 2010 – 2012. As well, Cindy held positions as fundraiser, secretary, and vicepresident of the Parents Advisory Committee at the former Bradshaw Elementary. She also served on the Young at Arts executive board and her sons’ Dry Grad Committees. Wayne and Cindy’s involvement in community sport has been a team effort for many years, and has epitomized the intent of this award to recognize people who volunteer together. The Eric Flowerdew award for volunteering went to John Jackman. Nominees for this award were Jackman, Bill Ede, Mitch Kosterman, Wayne Leach, Joanne Nicolato and Lynne VanLaarhoven. Jackman is a member of the pioneering Jackman family and has dedicated years of his life to keep Aldergrove’s history alive. In 1989, the
Aldergrove Heritage Society was formed to compile a history of the area into a book. He was chairman of the group, and he and other volunteers spent countless hours researching and writing to produce “The Place Between.” He also worked to save the F.J. Hart Building. Built in 1892, it was the first telephone office in the Fraser Valley and he was determined not to see it bulldozed. It now stands as the Aldergrove Telephone Museum. A member of the Elks Club of Canada for 45 years, he has served with the Aldergrove Elks for 22 years, helping children with speech and hearing problems, funding camps, sponsoring the Aldergrove Bruins hockey team, and contributing to drug and alcohol awareness programs. Over the past few years, he has personally raised $3,500 in pledges during Walkathons held for the Family Hearing Resource Centre. For 17 years, he has been instrumental in holding an annual plant and garden sale that raises money for special needs children. And at Christmas time, he delivers gifts to less fortunate children and helps the Elks organize a free annual Christmas Celebration for kids. Along with his brother
Keith, he worked with the Township of Langley to help create a cairn commemorating the contributions of their great grandfather Philip, a Royal Engineer from England who settled in Aldergrove in 1872 and later became mayor. He also worked with the Township to secure the Elks Club a temporary home in the historic schoolhouse of the old Aldergrove Elementary School building As events chairman for the Aldergrove Elks, he presented fellow nominee and good friend Bill Ede with high quality soccer balls and a financial contribution to support the Aldergrove Spring Soccer League. Last year he allowed a large crew of Aldergrove Business Association volunteers to plant pumpkin seeds on his farm in anticipation of the Wall of Jack-o-Lanterns Halloween event, and he plans to do it again this year. He is event co-ordinator of the Vintage Car Show that is being held later this month at the Otter Co-op by the Central Fraser Valley Chapter of the Vintage Car Club of Canada and is also part of Langley Township’s Adopt-aBlock program and helps clean more than a mile of Fraser Highway several times a year.

District seeks feedback on budget priorities The Board of Education of the Langley School District is asking for public input into the preparation of the operating fund component of its 2013-2014 Annual Budget. The 2013-2014 annual budget will be developed following the principles of the Board of Education’s Strategic Plan 2012-2013: Year I of III and the goals of the District Achievement Contract 2011-2014 which includes the particular foci of our Aboriginal Education Programs. The Board is asking that your input take into consideration its four fundamental principles:
While the recent Ministry of Education Funding announcement for next year does provide additional funding of approximately $2.6 million over what the district received in 2010-2013, the District is still projected to have a shortfall in excess of $3.0 million in 2013-2014 based on a status quo expenditure budget. In submitting your feedback, please give consideration to budget reductions and budget additions both from an overall district perspective and from your personal perspective as it relates to a particular school or a particular area of the district. Submit your feedback online via http://bit.ly/SD35Budget2013
1. Having caring, safe and welcoming schools 2. Providing educational opportunities to improve student success 3. Engaging in proactive planning for maintaining healthy and sustainable schools 4. Being responsible stewards of district resources and, the three primary goals of the District Achievement Contract: 1. Improving transition results for our students 2. Improving literacy skills for all students 3. Improving numeracy skills for all students
Summer session opportunities The Langley School District provides a variety of summer learning opportunities for students of many ages to take new courses, improve their marks, explore new subjects, and get additional support to complete courses before moving on to their next grade. • Elementary & Middle Summer Learning (NEW for 2013!) for students in grades 1-8 at numerous locations across Langley, Aldergrove and Fort Langley.
The Board of Education approved the District’s amended annual budget at its February 26th Regular Meeting. The amended budget projects that the $13.5 million operating funding deficit that existed at the end of June 2010 will be completely repaid by June 30, 2013, two years ahead of the Ministry of Education’s approved Deficit Elimination Plan. However, it will be difficult for the District to continue to experience the financial successes of the last three years in 2013-2014 due to significant cost pressures it will face next year, as illustrated below: Teacher pension increase Transition back to GST/PST system Retroactive 2.0% wage lift for CUPE (with benefits) 2013-2014 2.0% wage lift for all (with benefits) Richard Bullpit startup costs Middle school staffing Addition of trades staff Other benefit increases Utilities & waste diversion increases General inflation

Otter Co-op presented BC Children’s Hospital with a $1,000 cheque Monday, the proceeds of a penny drive that gathered about 400 pounds of the coins. With the recent announcement of the elimination of the penny, Otter Co-op staff member Derek Hammer thought it would be great to start a penny drive and donate all money received to the BC Children’s Hospital. Anyone in Aldergrove can walk a dog, but it takes a special kind of dog to help a person walk. Dog Guides enable many of the millions of Canadians with disabilities to live safely and independently. By participating in the Aldergrove Purina Walk for Dog Guides on May 26, you can help
provide Dog Guides at no cost. The five kilometre walk is taking place at Philip Jackman Park and begins at 12 noon. Planning one’s own funeral arrangements is not easy. Choosing a funeral provider can be just as difficult.
7”
At First Memorial Funeral Services, we have been helping families since 1961 – over 50 years of service to thousands throughout British Columbia. We are the leader in affordable, simple, yet dignified arrangements and for the last two years, named Best Funeral Provider for Greater Vancouver by Consumers Choice Awards. Did you know that you can pre-pay your own arrangements? Depending on your age, payments can run from $15 to $35 a month, for 5, 10, 15, or even 20 years, to keep your monthly costs low. This is a great solution for those on a fixed income. Imagine the peace of mind in having your choices stated in writing and removing the financial burden from your loved ones. Will it be a ‘simple cremation’, burial or a full funeral service? Maybe a celebration of life? We are the only funeral provider in Canada that is endorsed by C.A.R.P, (formerly the Canadian Association of Retired People). If you take the simple steps to join C.A.R.P., our service rates will be subject to a discount, to save you money. Call us today for a personal consultation. If you choose not to pre-pay your services, we’ll give you our Personal Planning Guide at no cost and no obligation.

Twisters Gymnastics Club produced more champions than any other gymnastics club at the B.C. Gymnastics Championships, which were held in Prince George last weekend. Three members of the women’s team (Ashlynn and Tamara Skulstad, Katrina Penner-Loat) and four members of the men’s team (Michael Frew, Elijah Horner, Cohen Kiers, Kyle Machibroda-Ames) captured allaround gold for their levels. Furthermore, silver all-arounds went to the following four athletes: Lexi Gaspar, Katelyn Cotterell, Kristofer Unipan, Steven Chaplin for their respective levels. Bronze all-arounds were won by the following three athletes: Andry Friesen, Ella Palmer, and Jeremy Gaspar. In all, Twisters athletes brought

home 24 gold medals, 21 silver medals, and 17 bronze medals. Nine athletes qualified for the Canadian National Championships, which will be held in Ottawa in May: Ashlynn Skulstad, Andry and Dawson Friesen, Emily Moorthy, Cohen Kiers, Steven Chaplin, Nicolas Garfias, Keh Ikeda, and Zachary Clay. These glowing results point, once again, to the excellence of the Twisters coaching staff. Placements of Aldergrove area athletes are as follows: Women’s team: Paula Melger-Ida (Level 2 Tyro): bronze on vault and floor; and Men’s team: Jonathan Osers (High Performance Senior): 5th on floor and Kyle MachibrodaAmes (National Open): gold allaround, gold on pommel horse, rings, and parallel bas, silver on floor and high bar

MEND puts kids on track to health and fitness Aldergrove Star
Families in the Township of Langley could soon be learning fun ways to get fit and healthy thanks to a free lifestyle program starting this month. The MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition... Do it!) 10-week healthy lifestyle program is available to families with children aged between seven and 13 who are above a healthy weight. Sessions aim to improve children’s physical activity levels, nutrition, and self-esteem. “This course helps families become
healthier and fitter for life,” said Township community recreation manager Lesley Visser. “On the MEND program, children quickly make new friends and really enjoy trying out different activities. By the end of the 10 weeks their confidence has greatly improved. “It’s a fun way to learn about nutrition in a relaxed atmosphere.” With one in four children above a healthy weight, the program is being run by the Township to improve the health of local kids. It will take place at Lynn Fripps
