Campaigns ready to roll
Model city
By Jennifer Lang The writ doesn’t drop until Tuesday, but the 2013 provincial election race has already begun in earnest in Surrey-Cloverdale, where both the Liberal and NDP candidates opened their campaign offices last weekend. B.C. Liberal candidate Stephanie Cadieux welcomed supporters April 6 to her campaign headquarters at #101-5658 176 Street in the historic town centre. The following day, two federal NDP MPs – Jinny Sims (Newton-North Delta,) and Jasbir Sandhu (SurreyNorth) were on hand to help provincial Surrey-Cloverdale NDP hopeful Harry Kooner open his campaign office at #101-17700 Hwy 10 in Clover Square Village. Cadieux, who served as minister for Children and Family Development, is currently MLA for SurreyPanorama, where she was elected in 2009. She’s running in Surrey-Cloverdale, her home for 11 years.

Adrian Andor, left, Josh Reambeault-Uren, Ethan Penner and Fallon O’Connor and their Grade 3 classmates at Don Christian Elementary spent several weeks planning, designing and building a model Cloverdale out of cardboard and construction paper in their classroom. For more on their project, turn to page 5.
Stephanie Cadieux, Liberal, and Harry Kooner, NDP, are running in Surrey-Cloverdale.
Kooner works in legal services with the City of Surrey and has lived in Surrey-Cloverdale for nearly 20 years. Both are vying for a seat that’s been held since 2001 by Liberal Kevin Falcon, who isn’t running again. The Green Party of B.C., B.C. Conservative Party and others have not yet announced candidates for the riding. On Sunday, Premier Christy Clark makes an appeal directly to voters on Global TV. The 28-day campaign period begins Tuesday and the election is May 14.
Freemasonry: the secret’s out Cloverdale Lodge, other orders in the Masonic fraternity, set to reveal all By Jennifer Lang Despite what you’ve seen depicted in popular culture involving strange symbols, mysterious rituals, and men clothed in curious regalia, the Freemasons are not a secret organization, says Guy Olsson, a member of the Cloverdale Masonic Lodge, which has been around for more than 50 years. A better word than secret might be “private,” says Olsson, a past Grand Master who suspects the Masonic tendency towards discretion may the source of many of the misconceptions that persist about Freemasons. But secret, they are not.
“Otherwise we would not have websites, be listed in phone books, or have buildings with emblems proudly displayed on the front,” reasons Olsson, who is a lively ambassador for the Craft, and is master of ceremonies at the upcoming open house on April 16 called Freemasonry Explained. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend to find out more about Freemasons and the other Masonic orders. It’s billed as an evening of explanation and discovery – everything you’ve always wanted to know about Freemasonry but didn’t know who, or how, to ask.

“We will answer any and all questions,” Olsson says. “We will definitely, pretty much lay the cards on the table.” As if to prove it, he offers up the following: “Always remember, to be one, you must ask one,” he intones, somewhat cryptically, before adding: “That’s it. No one will ever ask you to join.” Don’t know any Freemasons personally? Simply visit the Cloverdale Lodge’s website, www.cloverdalemasons.com. There are more details about how to join there. Olsson, possibly on a roll, reveals another Masonic secret. See RECIPE / Page 3

Haney bead artist Anita Moyer shows off her ornamental spiders – meant to hang on door or window screens – at the first-annual Spring Sale at Shannon Hall on Saturday. The event was held by the organizers of the annual Christmas in Cloverdale craft fair, who say this year’s fall event will double in size, to at least two buildings.

“The first question you are asked on entering a lodge room is, ‘Are you here of your own free will and accord?’” Those are just two of the revelations that will unfold at the upcoming open house, which aims to build on the successes previous open houses which have drawn upwards of 120 people each year. The model has been so successful, in fact, that Cloverdale’s “Freemasonry Explained” program has now been adopted by a number of other districts, resulting in a rise in new memberships, particularly among the under 30 set. The evening’s format – which provides an overview of Freemasonry itself, how the lodge offices work, and delves into Masonic degrees – is broader this year, with presentations from the other members of the Masonic fraternity: Order of the Eastern Star, Job’s Daughters, and the Shrine. “We’re making a conscientious effort to make ourselves more visible in the community, through public relations events like this,” says Olsson. “We also have a larger presence on the web and through various other avenues.” This May long weekend, you’ll see the Cloverdale lodge members rustling up chili samples at the Cloverdale Chili Cook-off during Rodeo Week. (Turns out the one Masonic secret he’s not willing to share involves their chili recipe.) The Cloverdale Freemasons are also responsible for the Christmas tree that lights up the historic Dale Building on 176 Street during Santa’s Parade of Lights and they offer educational bursaries. Freemasons date back to the Middle Ages when Europe’s cathedrals were being built, but some believe their origins go back even further, to King

Solomon’s temple in Jerusalem, Olsson says. Strictly speaking, Masons aren’t a service organization like Kinsmen or Rotary. The focus is on self-improvement, and, by extension, the greater community. Unlike other organizations that were once bastions of male preserve but have since opened their doors, women still can’t join the Masons. They can, however, join the Order of the Eastern Star and the youth order, Job’s Daughters. You have to be 21 or older to join Freemasons. For younger men and youth, there’s the Order of Demolay.
– Freemasonry Explained is April 16 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:40 p.m. (doors open at 7 p.m.) at the Eureka Masonic Hall, 20701 Fraser Highway in Langley. For more on Cloverdale Lodge #168, visit cloverdalemasons.com.

A
mad scientist couldn’t have come up with an odder creation than TransLink. And a new consultant’s report paid for by the Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation seems to agree. Recognizing the fact that TransLink is essentially a provincial creation responsible for overseeing regional priorities yet beset with funding woes and lack of accountability, the report suggests numerous reform options. None appear to be ideal. Critics say it’s time for a change but what changes are necessary? Former transportation minister Kevin Falcon thought he solved the problem when he took priority-setting responsibilities away from the mayors and gave them to a professional board. But that hasn’t worked the way it was hoped. There’s never enough money for transportation priorities so the mayors always seem to be going cap-inhand to the province, only to be told to look under the couch for

spare change or pare down the priorities. TransLink’s mayors’ council has only enough power to be a ready scapegoat for the province. Thus, when big decisions are made — say, building the new Port Mann Bridge or choosing the transit technology for the Evergreen Line — they’re

made by the province, leaving the mayors and the TransLink board responsible for unpopular actions such as cutting bus routes or hiking property taxes. According to the consultants, TransLink’s structure — an appointed board of directors in control of all decisions except major revenue increases
Points of view
— is an anomaly worldwide; most other cities have democratically elected representatives who answer directly to their constituents. But does the public want another emasculated but elected board, like boards of education, which have a little responsibility and no authority or revenue-raising power? Not likely. More radical surgery might be necessary. One idea would be to create a democratically elected Metro Vancouver land-planning board with responsibility for setting transportation priorities as well as budgets — replacing both the Metro Van board and the TransLink mayors’ council. Voters might yawn at the idea but something has to be done about TransLink and the string-pulling provincial government — whether BC Liberal or NDP — has to do it.

Class creates a cardboard city
Waterfront homes, residents’ safety key priorities
By Jennifer Lang Welcome to Cardboard City, says the sign to model Cloverdale – a community created from cardboard boxes and construction paper that nearly overtook Staci Hutchinson’s Grade 3 classroom at Don Christian Elementary. “This is our city,” Hutchinson says, pointing out the various landmarks, arranged along streets and avenues outlined in masking tape on the floor. There’s no rodeo fairgrounds or horse track. But there is a stadium and bus depot, movie theatre, skateboard park, hair salon and two high rise towers. Plenty of waterfront property and a full complement of emergency services – fire, ambulance and police departments – were also deemed essentials to the class of 20 students, who devoted a couple of weeks to their project. The class was divided into four committees – one for architectural considerations, another in charge of engineering, a third to make decisions on housing and a fourth to consider the commercial side of things, with Hutchinson taking the role of government, overseeing and approving plans. “They had to figure out the measurements of everything, where they were going to need roads, and where they were going to need bridges,” she says.
JENNIFER LANG PHOTO
A news station is one of the essential amenities of the model town.
Desks were relocated to the hallway to make room for model Cloverdale. “We’ve had no desks for three weeks.” Every step of the way, each student filled out the pages of a workbook with measurements, drawings and calculations and even journal entries, detailing their role in the project from start to finish. “They learned how a community works, and in doing so, they also learned about teamwork, citizenship, how structures are made,” she says.

Putting the heat on multiple sclerosis By Boaz Joseph A former fan of the heat of her hometown of Kamloops, and once a backyard hot tub enthusiast, Robin Burgess is not looking forward to summer. For years, warm temperatures caused so much weakness in her legs, that her North Delta home now has separate air conditioners for the her bedroom, kitchen and basement. “I know heat bothered me, but I didn’t know why.” Prior to her diagnosis with multiple sclerosis in March 2012 at the age of 49, she thought she was just clumsy. The new diagnosis explained the weakness, and also proved that her other strange symptom, numbness in her left arm, hand and fingers, was not carpal tunnel syndrome. “Things made sense and I was not just a klutz,” she says, recalling the days she would have trouble carrying a laundry basket or walking up the stairs. She’s now much more aware of her environment and actions, such as counting the seven steps in each of the two staircases in her home, doing spring and summer chores in the early morning or evening, consuming no aspar-

left foot feels like she’s wearing a “big clown shoe”). Burgess says she’s lucky in the sense that she’s right-handed (MS affects her left hand) and that unlike many women, she was diagnosed and doesn’t have children – just two purring “fur kids” and a supportive husband. “Better me than a young mom,” Burgess says of the debilitating disease of the nervous system. She adds one other positive, perhaps lifesaving tangent to her story: The MRI scan that confirmed her MS diagnosis also found

a lump in her neck that was a tumour that might have been dangerous. It was removed in a surgical procedure in January. Warmer weather means T-shirts, and Burgess will don a purple one on April 28 with her six-member Team Bunditos at the Scotiabank MS Walk at Bear Creek Park. She’s already passed her $500 fundraising goal, and has raised it to $1,500 – all for the MS Society’s efforts to find a cure for MS and provide services for its membership of 28,000

Clayton Heights students shine at trades competition Gold medal wins take competitors to next Skills Canada round By Jennifer Lang A gold medal win at the zones last month in Cloverdale means Clayton Heights Secondary’s Saul Sutherland and Nicholas Iverson have made it to the next round of the Skills Canada Competition. Sutherland took the top spot in the MechaniSaul Sutherland cal CADD competition at the Lower Fraser Valley regional skills competition hosted at Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Cloverdale campus in March. Nicholas Iverson placed first in the cabinetmaking competition, also earning him a birth at the provincials. The two golds weren’t the only medals brought home by Clayton Heights, which entered five students in the category, and swept the top three awards, with Joe Tusi taking silver and Josh Legaspi the bronze medal. Competitors in Mechanical CADD are evaluated on preparation for employment in the field of engineering design and drafting. Junior and senior secondary students from the Surrey and Delta school districts competed in trades and technology competitions that measure entrants against exacting standards, and test them

There were also two junior competitions, gravity vehicle race and Sumo robot. A total of 158 comNicholas Everson petitors took part in the regional competition, one of 13 in the province of B.C. The Skills Canada competition is designed to encourage youth to get engaged in and excited about a future in skilled trades and technology. In February, Matthew Gregory and Alexandra Suter of Clayton Heights each won bronze for their submission in the 3-D animation category at the Lower Fraser Valley regionals. Gold medalists proceed to the provincials and then the nationals, taking place this year in Vancouver June 5 to 8. Winners are then eligible for the World Skills competition. Although mortgage debt is ‘smart’ debt, buying your first home is a huge financial decision and there is a lot to think about. It’s one of the most important financial decisions that most Canadians will make in their lifetime. Here are 5 tips to help you get off on the right foot in your home buying journey. 1. Determine what you can afford. Before you start shopping for a home – and long before you consider putting an offer on one - build a realistic budget. Remember that home ownership involves costs beyond the monthly mortgage payment such at utility bills, insurance, taxes, and home upkeep. Consider opportunities that will help you manage your housing costs. Perhaps you could rent out part of your home, or have a roommate to help offset expenses. Or if you are in a condo, possibly rent out an extra parking space if you have one. 2. Start off small. The dream house may be priced too high, so a starter home might be the right option. A smaller or less expensive home will help you get a foot in
the door. You can take advantage of today’s low interest rates to pay off the home quicker and use the equity from this first home to buy that dream home later. 3. Get expert advice. Work with a mortgage broker to sort through all of the mortgage options and get the right combination of mortgage features, privileges and rate that is best matched to your needs. The right mortgage goes beyond just the rate--it’s important to also consider term, prepayment options, refinancing penalties, restrictions, and fees. We’d be happy to help you build a strong away team so that all aspects of your home buying experience are efficient and professional. Your team will include a realtor, lawyer, and a home inspector. 4. Plan for closing costs. There are additional costs that come with buying a home – lawyer fees, reimbursements, property transfer tax, appraisal, home inspection, title insurance - so you’ll need to have some extra funds set aside to cover these costs. Generally, you can expect
to pay between 1.5% and 3% of the home’s selling price in total closing costs. Note that first time buyers may be exempt from the property transfer tax if they meet certain conditions your realtor or mortgage broker can help determine your eligibility. 5. Accelerate your payments – early and often. A mortgage is the largest debt you will probably ever take on, and paying it down faster can mean large savings on interest costs over the long-term. Get in the habit of making lump sum payments whenever possible, and consider making weekly or bi-weekly payments as a way to decrease the life of the loan. Your mortgage broker can also provide strategies to help you pay your mortgage off faster and shave thousands off the interest costs. There’s so much to consider. Work with us today so you can get into the market and start your wealth building with smart debt! We look forward to helping you achieve your dream of homeownership!
CARING FOR AN AGING PARENT
HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW AT TAX TIME Are you a caregiver? Age, income and living situation are the deciding factors for determining a caregiver for tax purposes. If your parent or parents are 65 or over, have less than $19,435 in income and are living with you, you can claim the caregiver amount. You can also claim parents under the age of 65 if they are dependent on you due to an infirmity.
pend on you for all or some of the basic necessities of life for the transfer to be allowed.
Support from afar: Even if you are providing support to your parent or parents, they have to live with you in order to claim the caregiver credit. Sending money to support them does not qualify.
Nursing home expense: If you pay for your parents’ nursing home fees, you may be able to claim them as a medical expense. However, because you cannot claim both nursing home fees and the disability tax credit, it may be more beneficial to restrict your claim to the attendant care portion of the fees to the extent that they do not exceed $10,000.
Caregiver amount: The caregiver amount was meant to encourage Canadians to help care for their parents or relatives at home. The federal caregiver amount is $4,402 for each dependant which results in $660 in tax savings. There are also provincial caregiver amounts that will add to your savings. Disability Tax Credit: If your parent qualifies for the Disability Tax Credit but does not have sufficient taxable income to take advantage of it, they may be able to transfer the unused amount to you. They must de-
File their tax returns: Your parent or parents should still file their tax returns to take advantage of tax credits and deductions. Also, if they qualify for the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS), they need to file in order to keep receiving it.

Wotherspoon signs with Calgary Flames By Rick Kupchuck Cloverdale native Tyler Wotherspoon has signed a three-year contract with the Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League. The deal, announced March 31, is for $925,000 per season. Wotherspoon is currently playing defense for the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League (WHL). He finished the regular season with seven goals and a career-best 30 assists. His plus-minus total of plus-62, second-best in the WHL, caught the Flames attention. In five playoff games, he has two goals and two assists, helping the Winterhawks to a 3-2 series lead over the Everett Silvertips. Wotherspoon, 20, played with the Cloverdale Minor Hockey Association and the BC Hockey Major Midget League’s Valley West Hawks. He was drafted in the second round, 57th overall, by the Flames in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft after his second season in Portland. In 239 career WHL games over four seasons, he has 17 goals and 65 assists. He was limited to 61 games this past season, as he also played for Canada at the World Junior Championships in Ufa, Russia. – Black Press
