Nine Cubs and two Scouts took part in their sixth annual Kub Kar race held at the Royal Canadian Legion on Monday, on a new track created by Kevin Galloway of Across the Board Creations and Stu Campbell. Carrie Armstrong served as scorekeeper, and after three final races — the first two were too close to count — Isaiah Persad placed first, with Hayden Persad and Heath Berry placing second and third, respectively. Niki Galloway’s car was named most fuel efficient.

Farmers and growers in the Creston Valley will have an opportunity to learn about a new policy agreement on April 15, when the B.C. Ministry of Agriculture hosts an information session at the Downtowner Motor Inn from 7-9 p.m. Growing Forward 2 (GF2), officially launched April 1, is a $3 billion investment by federal, provincial and territorial governments and the foundation for government agricultural programs and services over the next five years. “It is a program that helps farmers when they have financial stresses due to market issues, or non-weather-related issues,” said Nicole Ramsey, AgriStability representative for the South Okanagan and Kootenays, from her Oliver office. For example, she said, Okanagan farmers couldn’t sell their cherries for cost when cheaper Washington cherries flooded the market. Mad cow disease (bovine spongiform encephalopathy) has, not too long ago, caused severe financial losses in the cattle industry. Ramsey’s presentation will also inform locals of the changes to the AgriStability and AgriInvest programs as a result of the GF2 agreement, show them how to fill out harmonized forms and offer an opportunity to have questions answered. The late model silver Hyundai Accent sits in her driveway, serving as a constant reminder that Tilley Kaye is no longer allowed to drive. Kaye is yet another senior who has fallen victim to the Ministry of Transportation’s DriveAble program, a combination of verbal and driving exams designed to take cognitively impaired drivers off the road. Tests are intended to assess memory, attention, reaction time and judgment. “For nearly a year my car has been sitting there, insured,” she said. Sitting in her cozy, tidy mobile home, Kaye sorts through the stacks of paperwork she has amassed as she struggles to find a way to get back behind the wheel. She is quick to pull names from her memory and shows no obvious signs of having a brain that is slowing down. See DRIVER, page 3

Driver EKRH to forced to receive take exam $20M ICU in Nelson upgrade BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
A badly outdated intensive care unit in Cranbrook’s East Kootenay Regional Hospital should be a thing of the past by 2016. Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett announced on Friday that the provincial government has committed to pay 60 per cent of the $20 million project. “I recall in 2000, Maclean’s magazine portrayed our hospital as the poster child for how bad rural health care was in Canada. Today, this new intensive care unit complements a new ambulatory care ward, new diagnostic imaging centre, new emergency room, new entrance and many new specialists,” Bennett said, speaking on behalf of Health Minister Margaret MacDiarmid. The new ICU will be housed in a new addition, replacing the current four-bed unit, and will include two new, high-acuity beds. Those beds are intended to ease the pressure on the ICU and preserve resources for the most critically ill patients. The project’s remaining $8 million will be funded by the Kootenay East Regional Hospital District, an entity that taxes residents for capital projects and works with the Interior Health Authority to set priorities. “Today we celebrate a monumental step in continuing to provide first-class health care to the residents of the East Kootenay,” said KERHD chair John Kettle. “This has truly been a team effort between the hospital district board, Interior Health and our MLA who all worked diligently to see this critical care component move forward. I would like to extend a special thanks to MLA Bill Bennett for never letting up and always keeping this issue front and center for the benefit of everyone in the East Kootenay.” The project, which is now up for design proposals on the BC Bid website, will include a new electrical system to power the entire hospital. Construction should start in 2014 with completion in 2016. “A new intensive care unit is the number one priority at our regional hospital in Cranbrook. Interior Health is thrilled to have this commitment from the provincial government and Kootenay East Regional Hospital District,” said IHA board chair Norman Embree.

From page 1 “I’m a bum now,” she said. “I have to walk past my own car to beg rides from friends to get around.” Kaye’s troubles started last year, when her foot slipped off the brake and onto the gas pedal in a Canyon Street parking lot. By the time she came to a stop, the car had driven through a steel railing and across 20th Avenue. Luckily, no other vehicles were involved and Kaye suffered only some sore ribs. She made an appointment with her doctor and her life hasn’t been the same since. After diagnosing a broken rib, the physician pulled out some papers and launched into a series of questions. Only afterward did Kaye learn that the questions were part of a cognitive skills test, part of the DriveAble system created by an Edmonton professor and adopted in B.C. by the Ministry of Transportation. The questions aren’t especially difficult, but Kaye said she was in her doctor’s office to have her ribs checked and that she was baffled at the string of questions presented without a word of explanation. “I thought she was nuts,” she said of her doctor. “I thought she was playing a little kids game. When I left, I told her to shove it.” Instructions for administering the test specifically direct the tester not to explain the test or its purpose until afterward. Later, Kaye got a letter telling her she would have to take a driving exam if she wanted to keep her licence. “I’m not the only one who’s had an accident,” she protests. “They still drive. I didn’t kill anyone.” Eventually, she was scheduled for a driving exam. In Nelson. “A friend drove me over in my car, but I wasn’t allowed to use it,” Kaye recalled. “I’ve never driven in Nelson in my life. Uphill, downhill, in the pouring rain. “When the test was over I asked the examiner how I did. ‘You drive too slow,’ he said. DriveAble is crooked in every way.” Kaye has worked doggedly since turning her licence over to ICBC. She’s

“fired” her doctor and had another local physician administer his own cognitive test. She passed with flying colours. The Ministry of Transportation (specifically, the Office of the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles) response was that she can only retake the driving test if her doctor can show what health conditions have improved. “There was nothing wrong with me in the first place,” she said. “How am I supposed to improve?” Kaye has contacted her MLA’s office. “Michelle Mungall said she can’t change DriveAble alone,” she said. She’s unloaded her frustrations on Regional District of Central Kootenay Area B director John Kettle, who says the process is unfair and must be changed. “I wonder if it isn’t illegal for doctors to administer these tests without a patient’s consent,” Kettle said. “And making Creston Valley residents, especially seniors, drive to Nelson for a road test is ridiculous. I spend a lot of time in Nelson and even I hate driving there. This is a bad system and it needs to be changed. We need to treat our seniors with more respect than this DriveAble system does.”
Nelson-Creston Liberal candidate Greg Garbula agrees that the system is unfair. “I think that the process will need to be identified and made sure that it is fair for all communities,” he said. “And if the doctors are administering the initial test of cognizance, that it is given with total understanding of the consequence.” Kaye said that as a senior, she doesn’t drive a lot, and never takes trips of any distance. “The furthest I ever go is to Porthill to buy gas,” she said. “Mostly, it’s to run errands, do my grocery shopping and visit friends.” She takes the same, familiar routes on those short trips, and is certain that she is not a danger on the road and that her accident could have happened to anyone. Her sense of humour remains intact, despite the frustrations of the past year. “Now I am catching rides with a 90-year-old lady,” she laughs. Does she feel like her driving days are over? She sifts through her collection of correspondence and talks of plans to meet with anyone who might be able to help with her situation. “I am not giving up,” she said.

As part of the Creston Valley Home and Garden Show on April 12 and 13, the Creston Valley Food Action Coalition has organized a speaker series that will run both days. “One of the mandates of the food action coalition is education and community outreach, particularly around food and growing issues,” said Nadine BenRabha, the FAC member who organized the lineup. “That’s the part I’m most passionate about.” The 10- or 20-minute presentations will be held in the Creston Curling Centre, where the Creston Valley Quilters Guild will also be presenting its 30th anniversary show. All of them are food and growing related, with the exception of a segment by the curling centre on Saturday afternoon, which will be followed by Footlighters Theatre Society presenting songs from Annie,
and Jen Comer of King Creek Farm will make a presentation on beekeeping at 1 p.m. The curling centre and Footlighters will be onstage at 2 and 2:30, and at 3, Viers will repeat her discussion on seed saving. Ben-Rabha is most looking forward to the Friday night presentation by College of the Rockies greenhouse co-ordinator Nigel Francis about the Dan McMurray Community Seed Bank, a collection of heirloom tomato
seeds named for its creator and donor. “He had an absolutely unparalleled tomato collection — thousands of varieties of heritage tomatoes,” said Ben-Rabha. “Several of them are endangered, and quite a number are considered extremely rare, so they’re trying to generate interest and awareness, because you need people to grow them.”

Quotes that shape thinking
I like Facebook. I also find it annoying. But I don’t open my account looking for wisdom, so chances are it will escape me if I come across it. A friend’s post almost did pass me by recently, but once it hit home I couldn’t stop thinking about it. First, the context. Only minutes earlier I had been listening to CBC Radio on my way home from work when a news item started my stomach churning. An American state, North Dakota I think, was about to pass a law outlawing abortion after a fetal heartbeat is detectable. Before most woman realize they are pregnant, in other words. But it isn’t abortion that is really on my mind right now. For the record, I am in favour of a women’s right to choose. Period. Superimposed on a photograph on that Facebook post were 11 words that I think should be considered in every argument, discussion and debate we have about issues that involve public interest. The photo was a simple portrait of a stereotypical Jewish man — wirerimmed glasses, untrimmed beard and black hat. On the photo were the words that haven’t left me since I first saw them. “Can’t eat pork. Doesn’t try to make it illegal for everyone.” That’s the message. “Doesn’t try to make it illegal for everyone.” Let’s face it. Most divisive issues that face us today are coming at us as a result of the need for others to validate their own beliefs by imposing them on others. Forgive me if I go back to the abortion issue, but it’s a good example. The vast majority of people, for or against

Relay wants New book survivor speaks out photos against practice of polygamy To the Editor: Are there any cancer warriors and survivors out there? The Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life committee would like to hear from you. At 10 a.m. June 1 at the Alex Nilsson Field, the Relay for Life opens with a survivors parade. Survivors wear special T-shirts and the sight of that morning sea of yellow shows Creston that cancer can be beaten, and sets the tone for the entire day of festivities. To further send this positive message, we are going to display survivor photos (copies, not originals) in a gallery at the survivors tent. To submit photos and have a free T-shirt waiting for you, call Karen at 250428-2088. I’m a two-time cancer survivor and I want lots of company out there! Christy Johnston Creston
To the Editor: As residents of the Creston Valley who care about the welfare of our children, we would like to bring your attention to a book that will soon be in our local library, A Cruel Arithmetic: Inside the Case Against Polygamy, by Craig Jones. When he was first appointed as lead counsel for the attorney general, he felt that the crimes involved with polygamy, such as child abuse, would be prosecuted in our legal system. This book describes how the author’s own views evolved from skepticism to a

committed belief in the campaign against polygamy once he met the witnesses who had been raised in Bountiful. “This is a remarkable insider’s story of a unique piece of litigation: the first trial-court ‘constitutional reference’ in Canadian history,” says the book’s description by publisher Irwin Law. “Craig Jones, lead counsel for the attorney general of British Columbia, describes the argument he and his colleagues developed against polygamy, drawing from fields as diverse as anthropology, history, economics, and evolutionary psychology. Yet it was ultimately the testimony of real people that showed how the theoretical harms of polygamy’s ‘cruel arithmetic’ played out upon its victims.” Polygamy in Canada is still illegal because on Nov. 23, 2011, B.C. Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert Bauman ruled that Criminal Code section 293, prohibiting polygamy, is constitutional in that polygamy harms all society, and particularly contravenes the human rights of women and children. Mindfulness deters emotional eating
Emotional eating describes the tendency to eat when experiencing negative thoughts or feelings, and has been linked to increased body fat and severe obesity. While these negative thoughts and feelings are often rooted in harmful childhood experiences, they can also occur in people who remember a happy childhood. Emotional eating is a reaction to anger, anxiety and emotional pain. The pleasure of a food laced with fat, sugar and/or salt can soothe and distract from uncomfortable thoughts and emotions. Research suggests that emotional eaters often confuse difficult feelings with hunger signals, because emotions trigger the hunger response. Stuffing emotions by hiding outward signs of inner distress has been found to increase intake of foods high in fat and carbohydrates; the so-called “comfort foods”. One does not have to be a basket case to experience emotional eating. I’ve noticed that when my partner, who travels for work, is on the road, I experience some loneliness, anxiety, boredom and low moods. At these times I have a tendency to use food to distract myself from those uncomfortable feelings. I choose foods that comforted me in the past, usually high in fat and salt (and calories). If I don’t apply the skills of

mindful eating, I have little defense against the impulse to buy a bag of chips or eat some buttered and salted microwave popcorn. Without mindful eating, I forget to care that fat and salt

cancel nutritional benefits. Furthermore, when I gobble these foods, I am in danger of developing increased emotional distress and entering an eating cycle that is difficult to interrupt. Food processing, marketing, packaging and presentation are motivated primarily by the intention to get us to eat more — more quickly, more quantity, more often. Ads for unhealthy foods high in fat, salt or added sugar (most processed and fast foods) reinforce the message that snacking on high-calorie foods is normal, pleasurable, and will increase happiness and social desirability. It is not surprising that people who spend a lot of time watching television eat more unhealthy

foods than people who spend a lot of time exercising, gardening or learning to play a musical instrument. Mindful eating involves paying full attention to the experience of eating; observing the tastes, textures, flavors, appearance, sounds and smells of food, while also attending to the physical and emotional aspects of eating. With mindful eating, we learn to appreciate the difference between physiological and emotional hunger. Mindful eating supports weight loss and healthy eating by cultivating an awareness of and appropriate response to physiological hunger and satiation signals, and places emphasis on quality over quantity. Mindful eating is not dieting. It is becoming more aware of how we make harmful food choices and how we can make healthy food choices. Suggested practice: Identify foods you eat that are composed of fats, salt and/or sugar. Reflect on the emotional circumstances that trigger desire for these foods. For two weeks, notice and let go of the impulse to eat these foods. Pay attention to how this impacts your emotions and thoughts. Imperialism should not be way of future
Decades ago, I heard Winston Churchill lamenting after the Second World War that out of two beasts (fascism and communism) only one perished. If that was true, he conveniently forgot to mention the third beast: imperialism.
ing China) and Kazakhstan, most NATO countries invaded Iraq on a pack of lies, bomb-paved the road for al-Qaida terrorists from Benghazi to Tripoli, and aimed at war with Iran (a country that invaded nobody in the past 200 years). While colonialism was looting countries on behalf of respective empires, today’s imperialism is looting the world on behalf of puppet masters without borders, who have no Certik dignity, heart, soul, spine or sanity— of course, in the name of democracy, human rights or the responsibility to protect. Many of those criminal misadventures escape an average western citizen’s attention as they are cloaked in Joseph Goebbels’ state of the art mainstream media propaganda machine. One of many examples in this short century alone is the bombing, invasion and soft occupation of Mali. Why were they fighting Islamic extremists after the military junta was in trouble with “rebels”? A quick Wikipedia search will uncover one of the reasons: Mali is the third largest exporter of gold in Africa. It also sits on strategic uranium. Another reason is more delicate: Germany asked the French and Americans to return their gold reserves. That seems like a minor issue till you realize that gold was looted already.
Consider This Vladimir
Why is this important? Because without it one can hardly understand what is going on today, history will repeat itself and generation after generation will suffer. Imperialism evolved from colonialism and since the Second World War has transformed into entities where countries, nations or continents blend together for the benefit of new age kleptocrats and plutocrats. Communism turned coats over 20 years ago. The West was presented with a unique choice of building a free and fair world. It chose conquest instead. While the Warsaw Pact was dissolved, NATO expanded (ironically, in view of Bush being papa to Gorbachev, NATO will not move even an inch east). Bogeyman communism was replaced with the al-Qaida mantra (the former beloved freedom fighters of Reagan and Thatcher). NATO found itself in Afghanistan (border-

Birds and flowers are popular items, in the spring out there market, this time of year. Their showing, arrival, hatching, emerging or what ever you call it delights the eye and the imagination. “Flowers feed the soul,” said Mohammed. They nurture the living being. It’s partly that way because winter’s drab browns and grays and cold have pervaded the stage for, to some people, too many months. The increased sunlight chases that away. And, to humans, especially this time of year, “truly the light is sweet, and, a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun.” (Ecclesiastes 11:7, Amplified Bible) Sunlight imparts energy to man, flora and fauna. It ups the endorphins while boosting physical, emotional and chemical energy for all. Continuing onstage are crisp unfolding leaves, brighter green hues following drab ones, branchtips showing green where there was no green, and brilliant yellow flashes showing from between green
sepals of flowerbuds. Now, following spring’s introduction and another burst of sunlight, come the brilliant yellow flowers of glacier lily, also known locally as Easter lily. Then, trapping some of that sunlight are pink-flowered shooting stars, an endless line of production, rooting in March’s moisture marches on throughout the summer, basking in the sunlight. There is another sunlight, one that nourishes human life, flora and fauna. That light is the “Son”, the “Son Light”. The Son Light also feeds and nourishes the soul, the human being. The Son Light can warm and nourish the whole of humanity, imparting an additional and other kind of energy to the living being. Capture, trap, soak up the sunlight through unfolding spring. Don’t let the flowers have it all! And, remember to soak up some the “Son Light”! And, don’t keep it all to yourself, but share it with others! Further to the dormant spray kits we carry a copperbased product called Bordo for the control of peach leaf curl on peaches and nectarines. It is named after the region in France where it was first used and like the limesulphur is one of the oldest pesticides known to man. This product is also used when the trees are dormant. It should be applied in the fall after leaf drop. It acts like a protective barrier to keep the fungus off your trees. Infection rates go up during the warm and wet weather we get in the spring. If you use the other dormant spray in the spring, you should not need to re-apply the copper again. If you see reddish puckered or twisted leaves on your peach trees early in the year, pick them off and dispose of them in your garbage. This will help to reduce the disease’s presence. Lastly, we carry a sulphur powder, which can be mixed with water for a spray or applied dry depending on the use. It acts as a fungicide and a miticide (it combats spider mites), as well. It is listed as a control for diseases like powdery mildew, rust and scab. It

He tells stories through experimenting with different tones and pushing the edge of what instruments can do.” Chanting of numbers in various languages, including German, Japanese and Hebrew, rounds out Black Angels, which Crumb wrote in 1970 to represent the struggle of good versus evil. “The piece is a journey,” said Fragher. “It embodies a fall from grace and a journey through hell. It’s not directly religious per se, and it’s not based on anything religious.” The work is comprised of three parts. The first, Departure, depicts the fall, the second, Absence, intro-
duces the dark themes of the fallen angel, and the third, Return, brings forth beautiful music as God prevails over evil. Faragher was introduced to the work in college, when a friend played it for him at a library listening station. He was told to turn the volume up for the beginning because it was really quiet — which he discovered wasn’t the case. “The beginning is extremely violent and loud,” Faragher said, adding that his startled reaction got him kicked out of the library. That doesn’t represent the entire score, however. “It’s challenging enough, but still there are some beautiful melodies, there are some really magical moments that draw the audience Submitted in,” he said. “There’s a bit of theatricism, as well, with all the instruments we have.” The Schubert piece, Death and the Maiden, also has a serious tone. Written in 1824, the theme of death is present in all four movements. “Because of the dark nature of the program, we thought it would fit,” Faragher said. “It’s probably one of his most famous. They'll kind of mirror each other nicely.” Creston will be the second performance on La Cafamore’s Kootenay tour, which begins in Nelson, and also travels to Cranbrook, Invermere, Trail and Silverton. “It’s very important to me to bring relatively new music to audiences who don’t get a chance to hear it,” Faragher said. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. at St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Church. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students and children, and $45 for families, available at the door. Voting is now open for the second annual Kootenay Music Awards. Five music industry judges sifted through hundreds of nominated songs to come up with this year’s shortlist. Now it’s up to the public to choose the winners. KMA president Chad Hansen was thrilled to see the musical diversity in the artist of the year category. “We’ve got an opera, two big folk-stomp bands, an electronic producer and a singer-songwriter going head-to-head,” he said. “It just goes to show the range of talent we have in the region. Whatever type of music you like, you can find somebody here doing it really well.” Shortlisted artists come from all corners of the Kootenays. The Good Ol’ Goats from Cranbrook show up in the best roots and blues and artist of the year categories, Golden’s WakCutt is on the list for best DJ and the Slocan Valley’s Immune 2 Cobras is hoping for best new artist and best punk/rock/metal. There’s a huge representation from Nelson artists. Khaos, the opera written by Don Macdonald, is nominated in three categories. Tofu Stravinsky and James Lamb are both up for album of the year and Selkirk music student Dylan McPherson is going for best new artist. To listen to tracks from all the contenders and place a vote, go to kootenaymusicawards.com and click “Nominate” on the page banner, then “Vote now.” There’s a play button under each artist’s picture that allows visitors to listen to their music. When you’ve picked your favourite, register for an account and start voting. The voting period closes on April 30 and the winners will be announced at an award show at

Plant a self-sustaining garden
Gardening is a rewarding hobby with thousands of devotees. Backyard gardens provide beauty and aesthetic appeal to a landscape, and they can be a source of homegrown food and a natural habitat for outdoor wildlife. A self-sustaining garden can be an efficient addition to any home, but gardens require upkeep and a certain measure of dedication. A self-sufficient garden is a garden that sustains itself through proper planning and execution. Such gardens can almost take care of themselves so long as the soil is healthy soil, the seeds are reused and organic material is produced.
See us at Booth #19 at the Home and Garden Show
Self-sustaining gardens also represent a lifestyle where individuals are responsible for producing their own foods -- thus sustaining themselves without the need to shop for produce elsewhere. When planting your own self-sustaining garden, consider the following tips. • Start with soil. Healthy soil is essential to a thriving garden. The soil must have the right pH, correct texture and composition, and be full of nutrients. Very often the native soil in yards is not adequate to keep a garden thriving. In such instances, the soil needs to be improved. Adding compost -- which can be produced in the yard as well -- to the soil will enrich the soil with nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. * Maintain proper soil consistency. Soil that is the right consistency, meaning the optimum balance of sand, clay and actual soil, is another necessity for a self-sustaining garden. The ideal ratio should be 40 percent sand, 40 percent silt and 20 percent clay. Having the right balance of soil can secure root formation and promote proper drainage.
Thursday, April 11, 2013 Creston Valley Advance
• Test the pH. Certain plants need a specific pH in order to grow. A neutral pH range is typically ideal for growing vegetables. A pH tester can be purchased from a gardening center. Amend the soil accordingly to get the soil back to its correct level. • Know the growing season. Vegetables should be planted during the season in which they will thrive. Peas, beets and cabbage, for example, are cold-temperature vegetables, while cucumbers, squash and melons thrive in warm climates. Plant accordingly so that the vegetables will have the best chances for success. • Purchase quality seeds. Use fresh seeds, particularly ones that have been harvested from your own garden the year before, to have the best chances for germination. Or buy seeds from a reputable source, like a garden center or an online retailer who specializes in vegetable seeds. • Start seedlings indoors. You may want to work with seedlings indoors so that you can monitor growth and care for them more easily. Then transplant the seedlings outside when they are stable enough for the elements. TF135172

How to choose hardwood floors in 5 easy clicks
HoMe & garDeN sHow 2013
(NC) – Times have changed when it comes to the selection and purchase of hardwood floors. With today’s ease of communication on-line, many flooring and design companies provide the consumer with a Virtual Designer concept to view assorted design elements of flooring. Here are a few tips to consider when navigating the site: 1. Select solid or engineered flooring.
Solid flooring must be nailed or stapled into an existing wood subfloor and is only recommended on or above the grade level (soil line) around your home. Engineered flooring’s construction allows it to be installed over virtually any type of subfloor whether above, on, or below the grade level. 2. Choose your preferred species and grade. Examine the natural colour, grain patterns, grades, relative hardness and visual characteristics of each species to find what appeals to you. If you have an active high traffic household or a large pet, harder species are recommended as they will show less dents and traffic patterns. 3. Choose your board width. The latest trend is the use of wider boards made popular in nostalgic decors. 4. Choose your colour. Today the number one consideration for consumers is selecting the right colour for their flooring to match their decors. Often “popular” standard stain colours traditionally offered by manufacturers aren’t exactly what discerning consumers are looking for and they spend the next days and weeks search-
www.crestonvalleyadvance.ca 15
manufacturers for that particular elusive stain colour that will harmonize perfectly with their decors. 5. Choose your gloss level The final choice is the degree of light you wish your floor to reflect. A semi-gloss finish reflects approximately 50 per cent of the light shone upon, while a simulated-oil look reflects approximately eight per cent and a satingloss finish reflects at a 30 per cent rate. www.newscanada.com

Vancouver Island singer returning to Snoring Sasquatch SUBMITTED
From the tradition of the masters — Robert Johnston and Howlin’ Wolfe, to the James Gang, the Rolling Stones and southern rock — Jonathon Sweet has melded his own unique style and flavour to this art form called the blues. He will play on April 20 when he returns to the Snoring Sasquatch. Sweet, a Vancouver Island musician, has basically been on the road, in one form or the other, for 40 years. He has warmed up audiences for the likes of Valdy on a couple of occasions, as well as played with him at the Salt Spring Island Fall Fair. Born in Ontario, he has virtually been from the East Coast to as far as you can get on the West Coast without Submitted drowning — and add to Jonathon Sweet will play at the Snoring Sasquatch that time spent in on April 20. England and Ireland. “It’s about the emotion of the folk and originals. “If I get a tear or good laugh song that draws me and that is what I hope comes across when I from one of the songs, I will have play it,” said Sweet, who will also had a great night,” he said. Doors to the April 20 concert play at an upcoming Wynndel Coffee House, and at Bob’s Bar in open at 6 p.m.; the show starts at 7. Tickets are $12 in advance at Riondel on April 27. The audience will hear a mixture Kingfisher Used Books and Black of jazz and blues, southern rock, Bear Books, and $15 at the door.
Blossom Valley Singers concert welcomes spring BLOSSOM VALLEY SINGERS Buds will be “busting out all over” when the Blossom Valley Singers opens another season at its later-than-usual spring concert and tea. This year’s theme, Celebrate the Seasons, features a stunning choral song cycle written by the American composer, Andy Beck. The beauty of nature is portrayed in colourful tone pictures with vivid poetry, hauntingly beautiful melodies and sublime harmonic textures set alongside a well-crafted piano and keyboard accompaniment. This year’s concert will also celebrate the seasons of life with wellknown selections like Try to Remember, Seasons Change and for the young at heart, Slow Dancing in the Snow, a song about the season of youth where “a girl and a guy, the stars in the sky, the moon up above” think they’re in love. A playful, jazzy Spring Fever will recall
the yearly winter blues and the yearning for balmy weather, and a breathtaking arrangement of the familiar tune Home on the Range will bring us back to the bygone years of the western frontier. Blossom Valley Singers, a mixed choir under the direction of Anita Stushnoff, has entertained audiences in the valley for 26 years. Its mandate is to provide a high quality of musical entertainment to patrons in the area. The choir also provides scholarships for local youth who wish to develop their musical abilities through music schools or summer music camps. Seasons change, and so do venues. This year’s spring concert and tea will be held in the Catholic Church Hall at 2:30 p.m. April 20 and 21. Advance tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for ages under 14, available at Black Bear Books; tickets at the door are $14 for adults and $10 for under 14.

Reading the newspaper is a greener choice than you might think. We in the newspaper industry are committed to reducing our impact on the environment. For example, our newsprint suppliers plant more trees than they take and have successfully reduced gas emissions by 10 times what is required under Kyoto. And you’ve helped, too, by recycling over 80% of all newsprint in Canada. There is more to do, and together, we can work toward sustainability. Because sustainability isn’t just another story to us. It’s how we’re shaping our future.

Angels’ Share a comedy of planned whisky heist
FRIENDS OF THE CINEMA
A Scottish comedy-drama is next up on the Friends of the Cinema list of movie presentations at Prince Charles Theatre. The Angels’ Share, directed by Ken Loach, is a quirky tale of a small-time criminal who seeks redemption through one more crime. Robbie stumbles into the world of scotch whisky (angels’ share is the term
used to describe the loss of whisky in a barrel by evaporation) by accident, and is soon scheming with his community service pals to steal a rare and valuable barrel of whisky. Will the likable Robbie succeed with his plan? Will it lead to a new start and brighter future? Released last summer, The Angels’ Share has brought in almost $7 million at the box office as audiences have
Walter Leslie Preedy October 30, 1929 ~ March 26, 2013
On March 26, 2013 in Creston Valley Hospital at 8:30 pm after a period of failing health, Walter Leslie Preedy of Creston passed away. Les Preedy, was born on October 30, 1929 in New Liskeard, Ontario. When Les, whose nickname was “Chubb” in Ontario, was 16 he left home and headed west where he found work as a farm labourer. He went back east a little over a year later eventually ending up in Toronto working in a nut and bolt factory, a job that he found to be tedious, and boring. He then headed back to Calgary with an eye of finding work in the exploding oil patch. Times were tough the first year although he had the will to work, he lacked the experience. He was small for his age and the oil companies tended to write him off. He survived a cold Calgary winter between working on farm jobs, accepting odd jobs and to conserve what little extra money he had, spending many an evening camped under one of Calgary’s bridges. He headed up to the Leduc oil fields and landed a job with a pipeline operator who desperately needed welders. Les lived in a camp near the town of Calmar where he worked every day increasing his welding experience working on the pipeline. On a blind date he met a young New Brunswick girl by the name of Irene, who was the private secretary to the general manager of the Alberta Dairy Pool. This was the fall of 1950 and Les and Irene were engaged at Christmas and were married in Edmonton in the spring of 1951. They were married for 58 years. His next move was to Redwater, Alberta where they lived in a skid shack next to an oil well. Les kept busy welding. During 1952 work started slowing down for welders so Les and Irene moved to Calgary where he got a job as a surveyor, which meant that he spent a lot of time away from home. In 1962 they sold their Calgary home and moved to British Columbia where the Preedys bought a large cabin cruiser to haul tourists around Shuswap Lake. This proved to be a challenge so the next year they opened up a trampoline centre at Sandy Point. Their next move was in the fall of 1963 where Les became the plant manager of a manufacturing plant in Weyburn, Sask. However the company hit tough times and went bankrupt in 1965. He moved down the road to Estevan working as a welder. In 1966 Les took his mechanical and welding skills up north to The Pas, Manitoba where he became the welding instructor at the brand new Northern Manitoba Vocational Centre, which eventually became the Keewatin Community College. By this

time, Les had become an excellent welder. Les was somewhat of an independent thinker, one who wasn’t afraid to try new methods and ideas to accomplish his daily tasks. His colleagues and superiors quickly picked up on the value that this man brought to the table. There was a housing shortage at the time in The Pas. The new college and the soon-to-open pulp and paper mill made it difficult to find a home. A developer was planning a downtown shopping mall with two department stores and a major hardware store as anchors. They purchased a block of property but there were still homes on it. Les approached the developers about the empty houses. He then would submit a bid of $1,500 for a large two-story home that once belonged to a prominent merchant. His friends laughed at the low bid, but he felt that getting the houses moved was a bigger priority than haggling over real estate prices. The developer accepted the offer but Les would have to incur costs of making the move. He could also live in the house until his lot and basement were ready. He also put a bid on to demolish another house on the site and haul away the materials. His price was around $1200. The lumber on the old house was shiplap and he hired his two oldest children to remove the nails out of all the boards. The lumber became his main source for building his summer cabin. Meanwhile he had purchased a lot and found out that he would have to build a basement. He used wood; something he had read about and this became his prototype. Wood would keep the basement cool in summer and warm in winter. In his first year, he decided to build a snowmobile. He made the toboggan in the sheet metal shop and found an old engine that with some tinkering he could rebuild. He needed a certain type of screw or bolt but couldn’t find one. “No problem, I will just make one,’’ he said as he turned on his bench grinder. This quick ability to make his own bolts proved that his stint in that Toronto nut and bolt factory wasn’t such a waste of time after all. The snowmobile was finished for Christmas and while it certainly didn’t set any speed records it proved what you could do with a little ingenuity. The engine was placed in the middle of the toboggan, apparently to balance the weight of the machine, but this limited the passenger load. He was promoted from his welding instructors job to that of Chairman of Trades in 1977. Not used to wearing a suit to work, he found out that being the boss wasn’t what he had hoped it would be. Many of the people reporting to him had been friends, and some resented his success. Les wasn’t happy and he aged over a two year run when he suddenly resigned in 1979. “I had to get out of there; it was getting to me,” he told friends. Following his early retirement he continued to build houses. His most unique one was an environmentally sound one. Instead of concrete he went for a wooden basement which held the heat in. He installed a series of wood stoves to heat the home, and even ran a pipe from the hot water heater to the wood stove to give him hot water. His summers were spent gathering and cutting wood, but he had cut his power bill in half. He was ahead of his time as this was the seventies, not the 21st century. Other accomplishments included the odor-free outdoor toilet that he built for his cabin at the lake. He made a sheet metal toilet that fit in the “hole” and then he put a sink in the wall. Next came an outdoors water tank that was attached to the outside of the outhouse. Then he installed eaves that emptied the rainwater into a pipe that flowed directly into the water tank. You would go to the bathroom, turn on the water to wash your hands, and then pull a cord to flush the toilet with the rainwater. Thus you had an odor-free toilet. He was asked to patent his idea but never got around to it. He also built and designed canoes, boats, and a fiberglass camper cab for his truck that were functional and efficient. The key technical workers at the new pulp mill in The Pas came from Finland. The one thing that they missed from home was the saunas. Suddenly a sauna boom was on. Les got into the sauna frenzy but he needed something to provide power to the rocks. He went on a scavenger mission to the local dump where he found two laundry dryers. He hauled them back to his shop, removed
the motors, rewired them and there was his sauna power source. Les was a keen sportsman. He loved a good game of golf and for several years was a member of The Pas Golf Club. He was always an avid curler both in the men’s club and in the mixed with Irene. He also served on the club executive for a while. Les also belonged to The Pas Toastmasters club for a year or two, and was a member of the Elk’s club. Les also had a love for music. From writing folk songs, to playing his guitar, banjo and fiddle it was all a challenge. He built his version of a steel guitar, which he called a “Wood Duck” which sat in his living room, and many a visiting musician sat down to play it. He also fell in love with the mandolin and spent one winter building and testing one. It was a qualified success. In The Pas the annual Trappers Festival had a strong music side to it. He became the stage manager of the Stage Show that brought to town name entertainers like Catherine McKinnon, Ryan’s Fancy, Tommy Makem, Valdy, the late Stan Rogers and his brother Garnet and the late Blake Emmons. The Preedy house became a drop-in center during the festival for visiting musicians who along with local musicians would hold a post show jam that went until the wee small hours. Since moving to Creston in 2005 Les was a regular visitor to the Wynndel Coffee House. He idolized the guitar and singing of Bryan Ferguson, and other favourites like Peanut Butter and Jam. Both Les and Irene never missed the opening shows of the Blossom Festival. Before his health suffered he was a regular visitor to the Creston Public Library, always taking home an armful of books both fiction and non-fiction, especially science fiction. Probably the most dangerous and most unusual thing Les attempted was to show up in Alberta at an old friend's place in St. Albert one winter day with a simple request. Take me to Wizard Lake. They were flying ultra light aircraft and he was convinced that he could be up and flying that same day. His good friend shook his head and wasn’t surprised when he was told that he would need several hours of instruction first. Knowing full well about the tenacity of Les, within two hours Les was up and flying. He bought the plane and arranged to have it hauled north to The Pas. He could be seen at different times flying around The Pas, and yes, some of his critics thought him to be a crackpot or was that genius? Les was always leery of politicians but one day he decided to pen a letter to the Premier of Manitoba via the editorial page of the Winnipeg Tribune. He told the premier that the province’s greatest asset was its huge power resource. More water was pouring over the dams each day than we would ever need. Power was a renewable resource, Les explained, and the untapped market was the use of electric heat. It was environmentally friendly but its downside was cost. The only hydro company in Manitoba was owned by the government, so all they had to do was lower the rates of electric heat. More people would turn to the cleaner electric heat and the province could sustain itself forever. You can become a hero Les urged. Since then Manitoba has added many dams to its northern rivers but they don’t need coal or diesel to keep operating. They can draw from their own natural power source. Les waited and waited, but Conservative Premier Sterling Lyon never answered the letter from Les. Sterling went on to lose the next election, making him a oneterm premier. Meanwhile, the forward thinking Les who wrote his letter of 1978, never wrote a politician again. Les was predeceased by his parents, Walter William Preedy and Barbara Lillian MacLachlan from Glengarry County; and his wife Irene on July 23, 2009. He is survived by son Shane (Deb de Tremaudan); grandsons Rory, Erik, and Ryan of Rossland, BC; daughters Nadeen (Jeff Person) of Grindrod, BC, and Janis (Gordon Kelly); and granddaughter Ann, The Pas, Manitoba. We lost a remarkable Canadian on March 26. He will be missed. There is no funeral at Les’ request.

Nelson citizens stand Water concerns early against Harper in rally in season for Montrose BY SHERI REGNIER Trail Times
BY KIRSTEN HILDEBRAND Nelson Star
A small but vocal group of about 25 people against Prime Minister Stephen Harper joined together in protest Saturday in Nelson. “A growing number of Canadian citizens feel that Harper and the Conservative party aren’t accurately representing Canada,” says Emily Zabel, co-founder of the Kootenay Direct Action Committee. “They’re acting undemocratically. People have had enough.” The group gathered outside City Hall and marched down Baker Street just before noon garnering honks from the occasional supporter driving by. April 6 was chosen as a national day of action against the Harper government with rallies planned for across the country. The movement started in the prime minister ’s home riding in Calgary. Zabel cites selling off of Canadian companies to foreign investors, “waging war” on environmental organizations and the Trans Pacific Partnership that will enhance the privacy protection of big drug companies among actions done without the consent of the majority of the Canadian people. “We have gathered today to support Canadians across the country in saying, ‘stop Harper,’” she says. The group wrapped up their rally

and march at Kootenay Co-op Radio where Garret D Hippy had appeared on air earlier in the day representing the coalition.
The Village of Montrose is down to one temporary water pump, so residents really need to be water- wise, said acting mayor Don Berriault at the April 2 Montrose village council meeting. His comment followed the first, second and third reading of bylaw 702, the 2013 water conservation and staging restrictions regulations bylaw.” Council carried a motion at the request of Kevin Chartres, chief administrative officer, to enable staff with the authority to enact various stages of water restrictions at their discretion. “We want to think proactively,” explained Coun. Cindy Cook. “If we are using a lot of water, restrictions may need to be enacted well before our next meeting, which is weeks away.” Chartres explained that the warm and dry weather last weekend, did result in an increase in water usage. “All it takes is a few nice days, with residents out washing cars and hosing driveways,” said Chartres. “The village is allowed to use seven million imperial gallons of water a month, and in one day alone, 113,000 gallons were used.” Chartres further explained that with both village pumps in Vancouver, and the water capacity of only one well; stage one restrictions will soon need to
be imposed. Even though Montrose is on yearround (conservative) water restrictions, a progression to Stage 1, will mean reduced underground sprinkling time from four hours to two hours per night; and lawn and garden sprinkling time from two hours twice a day, to one hour in the morning and one hour at night. “The thing is, there is no reason to water grass in April, so I think we could ban lawn watering entirely until May,” added Chartres. After the meeting, Coun. Don Berriault talked about the history of water restrictions in Montrose. He was on council in the late 1980’s when, former councillor Mario Mackeri began what was then called energy conservation and education. “Before that time, we allowed watering everyday,” he explained. “Basically it was a free-for-all, because water was considered a renewable resource. “However, sometimes the pump was running up to 18 hours a day, and the cost was very high.” He said that back then, the village was looking for ways to save costs, when, forward-thinking Mackeri came up with the initiative. “Back then, we didn’t call it ‘restrictions’ because that had a negative connotation. I am not sure it was appreciated any better, so now we call it what it is,” he laughed.
