Ministry meeting with local farmers

Farmers and growers in the Creston Valley will have an opportunity to learn about a new policy agreement on April 15, when the B.C. Ministry of Agriculture hosts an information session at the Downtowner Motor Inn from 7-9 p.m. Growing Forward 2 (GF2), officially launched April 1, is a $3 billion investment by federal, provincial and territorial governments and the foundation for government agricultural programs and services over the next five years. “It is a program that helps farmers when they have financial stresses due to market issues, or non-weather-related issues,” said Nicole Ramsey, AgriStability representative for the South Okanagan and Kootenays, from her Oliver office. For example, she said, Okanagan farmers couldn’t sell their cherries for cost when cheaper Washington cherries flooded the market. Mad cow disease (bovine spongiform encephalopathy) has, not too long ago, caused severe financial losses in the cattle industry. Ramsey’s presentation will also inform locals of the changes to the AgriStability and AgriInvest programs as a result of the GF2 agreement, show them how to fill out harmonized forms and offer an opportunity to have questions answered. Kaye is yet another senior who has fallen victim to the Ministry of Transportation’s DriveAble program, a combination of verbal and driving exams designed to take cognitively impaired drivers off the road. Tests are intended to assess memory, attention, reaction time and judgment. “For nearly a year my car has been sitting there, insured,” she said. Sitting in her cozy, tidy mobile home, Kaye sorts through the stacks of paperwork she has amassed as she struggles to find a way to get back behind the wheel. She is quick to pull names from her memory and shows no obvious signs of having a brain that is slowing down. See DRIVER, page 3

A badly outdated intensive care unit in Cranbrook’s East Kootenay Regional Hospital should be a thing of the past by 2016. Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett announced on Friday that the provincial government has committed to pay 60 per cent of the $20 million project. “I recall in 2000, Maclean’s magazine portrayed our hospital as the poster child for how bad rural health care was in Canada. Today, this new intensive care unit complements a new ambulatory care ward, new diagnostic imaging centre, new emergency room, new entrance and many new specialists,” Bennett said, speaking on behalf of Health Minister Margaret MacDiarmid. The new ICU will be housed in a new addition, replacing the current four-bed unit, and will include two new, high-acuity beds. Those beds are intended to ease the pressure on the ICU and preserve resources for the most critically ill patients. The project’s remaining $8 million will be funded by the Kootenay East Regional Hospital District, an entity that taxes residents for capital projects and works with the Interior Health Authority to set priorities. “Today we celebrate a monumental step in continuing to provide first-class health care to the residents of the East Kootenay,” said KERHD chair John Kettle. “This has truly been a team effort between the hospital district board, Interior Health and our MLA who all worked diligently to see this critical care component move forward. I would like to extend a special thanks to MLA Bill Bennett for never letting up and always keeping this issue front and center for the benefit of everyone in the East Kootenay.” The project, which is now up for design proposals on the BC Bid website, will include a new electrical system to power the entire hospital. Construction should start in 2014 with completion in 2016. “A new intensive care unit is the number one priority at our regional hospital in Cranbrook. Interior Health is thrilled to have this commitment from the provincial government and Kootenay East Regional Hospital District,” said IHA board chair Norman Embree.

From page 1 “I’m a bum now,” she said. “I have to walk past my own car to beg rides from friends to get around.” Kaye’s troubles started last year, when her foot slipped off the brake and onto the gas pedal in a Canyon Street parking lot. By the time she came to a stop, the car had driven through a steel railing and across 20th Avenue. Luckily, no other vehicles were involved and Kaye suffered only some sore ribs. She made an appointment with her doctor and her life hasn’t been the same since. After diagnosing a broken rib, the physician pulled out some papers and launched into a series of questions. Only afterward did Kaye learn that the questions were part of a cognitive skills test, part of the DriveAble system created by an Edmonton professor and adopted in B.C. by the Ministry of Transportation. The questions aren’t especially difficult, but Kaye said she was in her doctor’s office to have her ribs checked and that she was baffled at the string of questions presented without a word of explanation. “I thought she was nuts,” she said of her doctor. “I thought she was playing a little kids game. When I left, I told her to shove it.” Instructions for administering the test specifically direct the tester not to explain the test or its purpose until afterward. Later, Kaye got a letter telling her she would have to take a driving exam if she wanted to keep her licence. “I’m not the only one who’s had an accident,” she protests. “They still drive. I didn’t kill anyone.” Eventually, she was scheduled for a driving exam. In Nelson. “A friend drove me over in my car, but I wasn’t allowed to use it,” Kaye recalled. “I’ve never driven in Nelson in my life. Uphill, downhill, in the pouring rain. “When the test was over I asked the examiner how I did. ‘You drive too slow,’ he said. DriveAble is crooked in every way.” Kaye has worked doggedly since turning her licence over to ICBC. She’s

“fired” her doctor and had another local physician administer his own cognitive test. She passed with flying colours. The Ministry of Transportation (specifically, the Office of the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles) response was that she can only retake the driving test if her doctor can show what health conditions have improved. “There was nothing wrong with me in the first place,” she said. “How am I supposed to improve?” Kaye has contacted her MLA’s office. “Michelle Mungall said she can’t change DriveAble alone,” she said. She’s unloaded her frustrations on Regional District of Central Kootenay Area B director John Kettle, who says the process is unfair and must be changed. “I wonder if it isn’t illegal for doctors to administer these tests without a patient’s consent,” Kettle said. “And making Creston Valley residents, especially seniors, drive to Nelson for a road test is ridiculous. I spend a lot of time in Nelson and even I hate driving there. This is a bad system and it needs to be changed. We need to treat our seniors with more respect than this DriveAble system does.”

Nelson-Creston Liberal candidate Greg Garbula agrees that the system is unfair. “I think that the process will need to be identified and made sure that it is fair for all communities,” he said. “And if the doctors are administering the initial test of cognizance, that it is given with total understanding of the consequence.” Kaye said that as a senior, she doesn’t drive a lot, and never takes trips of any distance. “The furthest I ever go is to Porthill to buy gas,” she said. “Mostly, it’s to run errands, do my grocery shopping and visit friends.” She takes the same, familiar routes on those short trips, and is certain that she is not a danger on the road and that her accident could have happened to anyone. Her sense of humour remains intact, despite the frustrations of the past year. “Now I am catching rides with a 90-year-old lady,” she laughs. Does she feel like her driving days are over? She sifts through her collection of correspondence and talks of plans to meet with anyone who might be able to help with her situation. “I am not giving up,” she said.

As part of the Creston Valley Home and Garden Show on April 12 and 13, the Creston Valley Food Action Coalition has organized a speaker series that will run both days. “One of the mandates of the food action coalition is education and community outreach, particularly around food and growing issues,” said Nadine BenRabha, the FAC member who organized the lineup. “That’s the part I’m most passionate about.” The 10- or 20-minute presentations will be held in the Creston Curling Centre, where the Creston Valley Quilters Guild will also be presenting its 30th anniversary show. I like Facebook. I also find it annoying. But I don’t open my account looking for wisdom, so chances are it will escape me if I come across it. A friend’s post almost did pass me by recently, but once it hit home I couldn’t stop thinking about it. First, the context. Only minutes earlier I had been listening to CBC Radio on my way home from work when a news item started my stomach churning. An American state, North Dakota I think, was about to pass a law outlawing abortion after a fetal heartbeat is detectable. Before most woman realize they are pregnant, in other words. But it isn’t abortion that is really on my mind right now. For the record, I am in favour of a women’s right to choose. Period. Superimposed on a photograph on that Facebook post were 11 words that I think should be considered in every argument, discussion and debate we have about issues that involve public interest. The photo was a simple portrait of a stereotypical Jewish man — wirerimmed glasses, untrimmed beard and black hat. On the photo were the words that haven’t left me since I first saw them. “Can’t eat pork. Doesn’t try to make it illegal for everyone.” That’s the message. “Doesn’t try to make it illegal for everyone.” Let’s face it. Most divisive issues that face us today are coming at us as a result of the need for others to validate their own beliefs by imposing them on others. Forgive me if I go back to the abortion issue, but it’s a good example. The vast majority of people, for or against

abortion, aren’t personally affected by whether they take place or not. I personally know only a small number of women whom I know to have had abortions. My life was not

To the Editor: As residents of the Creston Valley who care about the welfare of our children, we would like to bring your attention to a book that will soon be in our local library, A Cruel Arithmetic: Inside the Case Against Polygamy, by Craig Jones. When he was first appointed as lead counsel for the attorney general, he felt that the crimes involved with polygamy, such as child abuse, would be prosecuted in our legal system. This book describes how the author’s own views evolved from skepticism to a

committed belief in the campaign against polygamy once he met the witnesses who had been raised in Bountiful. “This is a remarkable insider’s story of a unique piece of litigation: the first trial-court ‘constitutional reference’ in Canadian history,” says the book’s description by publisher Irwin Law. “Craig Jones, lead counsel for the attorney general of British Columbia, describes the argument he and his colleagues developed against polygamy, drawing from fields as diverse as anthropology, history, economics, and evolutionary psychology. Yet it was ultimately the testimony of real people that showed how the theoretical harms of polygamy’s ‘cruel arithmetic’ played out upon its victims.” Polygamy in Canada is still illegal because on Nov. 23, 2011, B.C. Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert Bauman ruled that Criminal Code section 293, prohibiting polygamy, is constitutional in that polygamy harms all society, and particularly contravenes the human rights of women and children. Mindfulness deters emotional eating

Emotional eating describes the tendency to eat when experiencing negative thoughts or feelings, and has been linked to increased body fat and severe obesity. While these negative thoughts and feelings are often rooted in harmful childhood experiences, they can also occur in people who remember a happy childhood. Emotional eating is a reaction to anger, anxiety and emotional pain. The pleasure of a food laced with fat, sugar and/or salt can soothe and distract from uncomfortable thoughts and emotions. Research suggests that emotional eaters often confuse difficult feelings with hunger signals, because emotions trigger the hunger response. Stuffing emotions by hiding outward signs of inner distress has been found to increase intake of foods high in fat and carbohydrates; the so-called “comfort foods”. One does not have to be a basket case to experience emotional eating. I’ve noticed that when my partner, who travels for work, is on the road, I experience some loneliness, anxiety, boredom and low moods. At these times I have a tendency to use food to distract myself from those uncomfortable feelings. I choose foods that comforted me in the past, usually high in fat and salt (and calories). If I don’t apply the skills of

mindful eating, I have little defense against the impulse to buy a bag of chips or eat some buttered and salted microwave popcorn. Without mindful eating, I forget to care that fat and salt

cancel nutritional benefits. Furthermore, when I gobble these foods, I am in danger of developing increased emotional distress and entering an eating cycle that is difficult to interrupt. Food processing, marketing, packaging and presentation are motivated primarily by the intention to get us to eat more — more quickly, more quantity, more often. Ads for unhealthy foods high in fat, salt or added sugar (most processed and fast foods) reinforce the message that snacking on high-calorie foods is normal, pleasurable, and will increase happiness and social desirability. It is not surprising that people who spend a lot of time watching television eat more unhealthy

foods than people who spend a lot of time exercising, gardening or learning to play a musical instrument. Mindful eating involves paying full attention to the experience of eating; observing the tastes, textures, flavors, appearance, sounds and smells of food, while also attending to the physical and emotional aspects of eating. With mindful eating, we learn to appreciate the difference between physiological and emotional hunger. Mindful eating supports weight loss and healthy eating by cultivating an awareness of and appropriate response to physiological hunger and satiation signals, and places emphasis on quality over quantity. Mindful eating is not dieting. It is becoming more aware of how we make harmful food choices and how we can make healthy food choices. Suggested practice: Identify foods you eat that are composed of fats, salt and/or sugar. Reflect on the emotional circumstances that trigger desire for these foods. For two weeks, notice and let go of the impulse to eat these foods. Pay attention to how this impacts your emotions and thoughts. Decades ago, I heard Winston Churchill lamenting after the Second World War that out of two beasts (fascism and communism) only one perished. If that was true, he conveniently forgot to mention the third beast: imperialism.

One of many examples in this short century alone is the bombing, invasion and soft occupation of Mali. Why were they fighting Islamic extremists after the military junta was in trouble with “rebels”? A quick Wikipedia search will uncover one of the reasons: Mali is the third largest exporter of gold in Africa. It also sits on strategic uranium. Another reason is more delicate: Germany asked the French and Americans to return their gold reserves. That seems like a minor issue till you realize that gold was looted already.

Imperialism evolved from colonialism and since the Second World War has transformed into entities where countries, nations or continents blend together for the benefit of new age kleptocrats and plutocrats. Communism turned coats over 20 years ago. The West was presented with a unique choice of building a free and fair world. It chose conquest instead. While the Warsaw Pact was dissolved, NATO expanded (ironically, in view of Bush being papa to Gorbachev, NATO will not move even an inch east). It’s partly that way because winter’s drab browns and grays and cold have pervaded the stage for, to some people, too many months. The increased sunlight chases that away. And, to humans, especially this time of year, “truly the light is sweet, and, a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun.” (Ecclesiastes 11:7, Amplified Bible) Sunlight imparts energy to man, flora and fauna. It ups the endorphins while boosting physical, emotional and chemical energy for all. Continuing onstage are crisp unfolding leaves, brighter green hues following drab ones, branchtips showing green where there was no green, and brilliant yellow flashes showing from between green

Then, trapping some of that sunlight are pink-flowered shooting stars, an endless line of production, rooting in March’s moisture marches on throughout the summer, basking in the sunlight. There is another sunlight, one that nourishes human life, flora and fauna. That light is the “Son”, the “Son Light”. The Son Light also feeds and nourishes the soul, the human being. The Son Light can warm and nourish the whole of humanity, imparting an additional and other kind of energy to the living being. Capture, trap, soak up the sunlight through unfolding spring. Don’t let the flowers have it all! And, remember to soak up some the “Son Light”! And, don’t keep it all to yourself, but share it with others! It is named after the region in France where it was first used and like the limesulphur is one of the oldest pesticides known to man. This product is also used when the trees are dormant. It should be applied in the fall after leaf drop. It acts like a protective barrier to keep the fungus off your trees. Infection rates go up during the warm and wet weather we get in the spring. If you use the other dormant spray in the spring, you should not need to re-apply the copper again. If you see reddish puckered or twisted leaves on your peach trees early in the year, pick them off and dispose of them in your garbage. This will help to reduce the disease’s presence. Lastly, we carry a sulphur powder, which can be mixed with water for a spray or applied dry depending on the use. It acts as a fungicide and a miticide (it combats spider mites), as well. It is listed as a control for diseases like powdery mildew, rust and scab. It

ments, well, backwards, with their fingers near the bridge and the bow where their fingers usually go. “Some of the techniques are very difficult,” said cellist Jeff Faragher. “We’ve all been practicing on our own for about eight months. … “[Crumb] is a master of soundscapes. He tells stories through experimenting with different tones and pushing the edge of what instruments can do.” Chanting of numbers in various languages, including German, Japanese and Hebrew, rounds out Black Angels, which Crumb wrote in 1970 to represent the struggle of good versus evil. “The piece is a journey,” said Fragher. “It embodies a fall from grace and a journey through hell. It’s not directly religious per se, and it’s not based on anything religious.” The work is comprised of three parts. The first, Departure, depicts the fall, the second, Absence, intro-

duces the dark themes of the fallen angel, and the third, Return, brings forth beautiful music as God prevails over evil. Faragher was introduced to the work in college, when a friend played it for him at a library listening station. He was told to turn the volume up for the beginning because it was really quiet — which he discovered wasn’t the case. “The beginning is extremely violent and loud,” Faragher said, adding that his startled reaction got him kicked out of the library. That doesn’t represent the entire score, however. “It’s challenging enough, but still there are some beautiful melodies, there are some really magical moments that draw the audience Submitted in,” he said. “There’s a bit of theatricism, as well, with all the instruments we have.” The Schubert piece, Death and the Maiden, also has a serious tone. Written in 1824, the theme of death is present in all four movements. “Because of the dark nature of the program, we thought it would fit,” Faragher said. “It’s probably one of his most famous. They'll kind of mirror each other nicely.” Creston will be the second performance on La Cafamore’s Kootenay tour, which begins in Nelson, and also travels to Cranbrook, Invermere, Trail and Silverton. “It’s very important to me to bring relatively new music to audiences who don’t get a chance to hear it,” Faragher said. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. at St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Church. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students and children, and $45 for families, available at the door.
