BC’s AAA credit rating has been reaffirmed by Moody’s. Currently, BC and Alberta are the only provinces with this international reputation for fiscal success. It’s always good to have an independent validation of our fiscal management. Moody’s explained it’s rating by stating that under the BC Liberal government “BC has a strong track record of meeting budget targets and will need to maintain this resolve and discipline” and “strong fiscal management and performance in recent years enabled BC to reduce its debt burden to a level that is below the median of Canadian provinces”. Our government has met annual expense targets 12 years in a row, while the NDP proposes undisciplined spending and years of deficit budgets. As Moody’s reports, if government does not exercise fiscal discipline, BC’s credit rating will be cut, meaning hundreds of millions more of your tax dollars will be used up to pay interest on the provincial debt rather than going to public services.

The Skinny on Potatoes
From large holiday feasts to a quick weekday dinner - if there is one vegetable that Canadian cooks would not want to do without, it is the potato. Masters of versatility, potatoes can be boiled, baked, fried, mashed and prepared several other ways. Potatoes are sometimes underestimated in their nutritional value. The average potato provides 40 percent of the recommended daily allowance for Vitamin C, has 3 grams of protein, is an excellent source of dietary fiber and supplies 12 other essential vitamins and minerals. All that and no fat. There are lots of choices when it comes to potatoes. Tried and true classics, such as Russet Burbank or Yukon Gold or new gourmet varieties, including Fingerling-style Banana Potaoes or deeply coloured Russian Blue, are just some of the choices you have. The texture determines a potato’s use, not its skin. Potatoes that are high in starch are more mealy. They tend to bake up nicely and make good fries and chips. Those low in starch are waxier and often higher in sugar. These varieties hold together better during boiling and are best used for salads, soups and similar dishes. Nicola is a relatively new, early yellow potato with a very low rating on the glycemic index, making them perfect for people who need to watch their blood sugar levels. Potatoes are usually rated fairly high on the index, which means that after you eat them, the carbohydrates in the potatoes cause a spike in your blood sugar levels. For example, a baked Russet Potato has a ranking of 111 on the glycemic index and the Nicola comes in at only 58. Beside your culinary preferences, you should look at your local growing conditions when selecting your seed potatoes. In general, potatoes are very forgiving and can grow in virtually all soil types. For best results, however, pick a sunny location and add as much rich, organic soil as possible. This is especially important if the soil has a high content of clay. Potatoes like neutral or even slightly acidic soil. In most of our region, the soil is more alkaline - a quick pH soil test will tell you - and potatoes benefit greatly from adding some sulphur to the soil. Experienced gardeners will also recommend that you rotate the location of your potatoes in your garden to help offset nutrient deficiencies and avoid pests. Seed potato tubers can be cut to allow for more plants. It is recommended that a minimum of two eyes are left on the tuber that is to be planted. After cutting the tubers, leave them out to allow the cut to scab or harden off before planting, generally between 12 and 24 hours. When first planting the potatoes in your garden, only cover the tubers with 3 to 4 inches of soil. Once your potatoes have grown to about 6 inches, you can hill them by adding some soil over the plants. Carefully add about 2 inches of soil to avoid breaking the plants. Leave at least two thirds of the plant with leaves sticking out of the soil. Keep repeating this process as your plant grows. You can begin harvesting potatoes once the plant has flowered or when it dies back in the fall. Potatoes can also be grown in almost any large container, provided good drainage is available. Just remember if you are planting potatoes in containers, use good potting soil and feel free to add some organic matter to it to make it a little heavier. A slow release fertilizer is a good idea as well, as potatoes are heavy feeders. When growing potatoes in containers, it is important to keep them moist, but not soaking wet. Consistent moisture helps form uniform sized potatoes. A great idea, especially for smaller patios and balconies, are potato grow bags. These soft-sided, collapsible totes are light-weight and easy to move, some even have a harvest flap at the bottom for easy access. If you are transplanting potatoes from a container into a spot in the garden, do so before they flower for the best potato production. So put aside some space in your yard or add a few spuds to your containers this season and enjoy the results on your family’s dinner table. Till next time... happy gardening, Submitted by Kerstin

Challenges and history for BC’s ORV puzzle Submitted With the warm weather upon us, the Grasslands Conservation Council (GCC) wants to remind recreation enthusiasts using off-road vehicles (ORVs) such as ATVs, 4x4s, and motorcycles to ride respectfully and responsibly. Spring is a sensitive time for plants on the range. ORVs can do extensive harm to grasslands by spreading
invasive weeds, damaging grass plants and causing soil erosion. BC’s grasslands are an incredible gem – vistas of grass swaying in the breeze, large expanses of open ground that provide not only valuable forage and habitat, but incredible aesthetics and open areas for the recreating public to enjoy. Unfortunately, to some, the grasslands means an opportunity to ride their

much more stringent. BC is the only province in Canada that does not regulate motorized activity. The Grasslands Council in 2002, gathered a group which later became known as the ORV Coalition, and over a period of years of dialogue, the coalition eventually provided 47 recommendations to the BC Government aimed at bringing in regulation to manage motorized activity. These recommendations were aimed at managing environmental impacts as well as focusing on public and rider safety. In 2009 the government finally announced endorsement of these recommendations under an ORV management framework – motorbikes would be licensed, identifiable, and regulations brought in to ensure that bikes had spark arrestors and mufflers. Managed trail systems would be part of this initiative to ensure that trails were sustainable, and properly located. Today, in 2012, this legislation is shelved yet again. There are still no regulations governing the irresponsible use of

off road vehicle (ORV) – 4x4, quad, motorbike on terrain that is accessible, snow free early, and on fairly gentle terrain. As a result, many areas of grassland in BC are heavily impacted from motorized activity, especially those that are adjacent to urban areas or readily accessible by vehicle. Large scars occur on the hillsides, where a single motorbike may have made a trail, and others then followed and widened. Racetracks circle lakes and cut through sensitive riparian areas. Networks of braided trail systems on the open and semi open grassland areas are increasingly common. Every year, new trails are developed as the older ones get dusty or less challenging to ride. These impacted grasslands are now ripe for establishment of invasive plants, soil erosion, loss of forage, and loss of habitat for nesting birds and other small mammals. BC has become a mecca for motorized enthusiasts from other provinces and the neighbouring states, where regulations are

motorized vehicles. Section 46.1 of the Forest and Range Practices Act was passed in 1994 to provide enforcement agencies legislation to deal with motorized activity and environmental damage. To date, it has been very successful when riders have been charged with mudbogging in riparian areas, but has had limited success in the courts to deal with riders on grassland areas. Grasslands and sensitive alpine areas continue to be damaged, in all parts of the province. There is no desire to continue closing areas to motorized use. Motorized recreation is a booming tourism opportunity for the province, and it is recognized that it is here to stay. The challenge is to educate the public on where they can ride safely, and with the least impact to the environment. Legislation is s badly required to identify bike and quads through a licencing and decal process . Currently the public or enforcement agencies are challenged to report and prosecute irresponsible riding without a better means to identify the vehicles. Public safety is still very much a concern. BC very much lags behind other provinces and the United States in drafting regulations, and the hard work that the ORV coalition completed and government endorsed appears to be stalled out at present. This is not only disappointing, but alarming, as sensitive ecosystems of grassland and alpine continue to be degraded. The GCC hopes that as you head out on for a ride or a walk you will stay on managed or established trails, roads and routes in sanctioned riding areas and that you obey and respect the signage on private and lease land. The plants and soils in these areas are sensitive and it is easy to do irreparable damage. It is very important to the future health of these areas that the restrictions and limitations placed on these lands be respected. We want to ensure that the grasslands are here for future generations to enjoy.

The Adapted Art class traveled to The Painted Crate on March 5, 2013. Prior to this field trip the students learned about how colour enhances the feeling of a room. By using the Personal Colour Viewer on Benjamin Moore’s website, students discovered what colours they preferred by ‘painting’ a chosen bedroom online. Once at the store they were given the paint chip of their favourite wall colour. Following the Painted Crate’s “Create @ the Crate” DIY night model, the students were invited to paint wooden boxes with acrylic paint and the lids were painted with chalk board paint. Once back at school, students primed their lids and created drawings in chalk. They are now waiting for the art project that will “fill” their boxes. Special thanks to Barb and Jan for opening up their business to the class. One student said “he really enjoyed all of the colours and liked the name of the store”. They all said “they had a good time and enjoyed the painting”.

Celebrate Law Week The Canadian Bar Association, BC Branch, is excited to announce Law Week 2013; a week of celebrations province-wide including open houses, Fun Run, and a public speaking contest. Law Week is a national celebration of the signing of Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms and an opportunity to learn more about the justice system; what the legal community does; and what legal resources are available. Cranbrook celebrated Law Week on April 11 with a mock trial at the Key City Theatre. The You Be The Jury mock trial was an excellent way for the general public to observe how an actual trial would happen, based on realistic fact patterns that a real jury is likely to hear. The jury was chosen at random from the audience, so everyone had the chance to be a member of the jury. The mock trial included: • A man charged with murdering his employer • Personal relationships and affairs • An argument about whether the jury should be able to see some photographic evidence • Police eye witnesses On Saturday, April 13, 2013 the Canadian Bar Association, BC Branch will hold its provincewide “Dial-A-Lawyer” day from 10 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. to 2 p.m. Residents in British Columbia are invited to call toll-free at 1.800.663.1919 to speak with a lawyer for up to 15 minutes at no cost in six different areas of law (Family, Wills & Estates, Torts & Motor Vehicle Accidents, Immigration, Business, and Criminal. Decorated museum executive director to retire at end of April MAL set out to create a repository of Cranbrook history through preservation of archival material and exhibition of the City’s rich railway past –all within Museum facility. “Over the following thirty-five years, with Garry Anderson as our conductor, that’s exactly what CAMAL achieved, “said Sissons. “We have a massive archive of
Cranbrook history that will be kept safe for generations to come. We are an internationally renowned showcase of the golden days of rail travel, both preserving some of our railway heritage and serving as a tourist attraction and income generator for our com-

Garry Anderson, the driving force behind the Canadian Museum of Rail Travel and the Cranbrook Archives, Museum and Landmark Foundation (CAMAL) will retire on April 30th, 2013. The recipient of many outstanding service awards, including the Order of Canada and most recently a Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal and the Canadian Museums Association’s Distinguished Service Award, Anderson has dedicated his entire career to preserving local heritage, including the building of an internationally recognized Railway Museum in Cranbrook, BC. According to CAMAL Board Chair, Jeanette Sissons, Anderson’s professional career is a record of outstanding dedication and achievement. “Garry is always quick to acknowledge the help of our board members, volunteers and donors,” explained Sissons. “But everyone would say the Museum was Garry’s vision from the very beginning, one that he has pursued with a singleminded tenacity for almost 40 years.” Anderson grew up in Cranbrook. After earning a degree in architecture at the University of BC he returned to the City in 1972 to find a community up in arms about the recent demolition of a number of historic buildings, particularly the local post office. The City hired him to produce a report to find a better way to manage heritage perseveration, and one of the recommendations was the formation of a local heritage society. Founded in 1976 and with Anderson first as the volunteer Chair, and since 1980 as the paid Executive Director, CA-
munity. And, of course, we have the stunning Royal Alexandra Hall, reconstructed from one of the key Canadian Pacific Railway Hotels, for local celebrations, weddings and other community events.” Sissons points out that that rather than winding

A rare disease, it is not the same as secondary bone cancer, or bone metastases, which starts elsewhere in the body and spreads to the bones. Osteosarcoma is the most common type of bone cancer. It starts in new tissue in growing bones, most often in the knee area. Osteosarcoma tends to spread to other parts of the body, especially the lungs.
Primary brain tumours start in the brain and can be either benign or malignant. Cancerous tumours that begin to grow in other parts of the body and spread to the brain are called secondary or metastatic brain tumours. Elsewhere in the body, benign tumours are generally not considered as dangerous as malignant tumours. In the brain, however, both kinds can be serious and possibly lifethreatening.
Breast cancer starts in breast tissue cells, which extend beyond the actual breasts, from the armpits across to the breastbone in the middle of the chest and up to the collarbone. The breasts sit on the chest muscles that cover the ribs. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death by cancer in women.

The Canadian Cancer Society is a private, non-profit organization financed by public donations as well as by funds collected through fundraising activities. It uses every dollar raised in the most efficient way possible. That means administration costs are kept to a minimum in order to offer services to communities and to people living with cancer. This organization was created in 1929 at the request of the Canadian medical community, which was concerned by the ignorance of the general public regarding the symptoms of cancer. In those days, people with cancer often consulted a doctor only when their illness was already at an advanced stage, which greatly reduced their chances of survival.

During the first years of this organization’s existence, most of its revenue consisted of a yearly grant given by the Canadian Medical Association. For almost 40 years now, the CCS has been able to raise money around the country with Daffodil Month. By selling daffodils every spring, the fundraising campaign makes a huge difference in key areas, such as research projects, raising awareness, and community support. Be sure to show your support for the Canadian Cancer Society by buying daffodils in April.

PANCREATIC
HODGKIN LYMPHOMA
Leukemia is a cancer that starts in the stem cells of the bone marrow. Bone marrow, which makes blood cells, is the soft, spongy material that fills the centre of most bones. Leukemia develops when the blood stem cells produce abnormal blood cells. Over time, the leukemia cells crowd out normal blood cells, making it hard for the white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets to do their jobs.
Primary liver cancer starts in the cells, bile ducts, blood vessels, or connective tissue of the liver. It is uncommon and is different from secondary liver cancer or metastatic liver cancer, which spread to the liver from other parts of the body. Most primary liver cancers begin in liver cells called hepatocytes, and the most common type is hepatocellular carcinoma.
There are two main types of lung cancer: small cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer, which is the most common and slower-growing type. Small cell lung cancer grows quickly and often spreads to distant parts of the body. Lung cancer is the leading cause of death by cancer in both men and women.
Let’s make cancer history!
There are three main types of ovarian cancer. For each type, the cancer starts in a different type of cell found in the ovaries: • epithelial cell cancer starts in the cells that cover the outer surface of the ovary; • germ cell tumours start in the egg cells within the ovary and generally occur in younger women. Germ cell cancer can even develop in children. • Stromal tumours start in the connective tissue cells that hold the ovary together.

Cervical cancer starts in cervix cells. The cervix is the narrow lower part of the uterus and is the passageway that connects the uterus to the vagina.

Most colorectal cancers start in the cells that line the inside of the colon or the rectum, which make up the large intestine (large bowel). The large intestine is the last part of the digestive system. Colorectal cancer usually grows slowly and in a predictable way and is curable when diagnosed at an early stage. Colorectal cancer is the second most fatal cancer in men and the third most fatal cancer in women.

Hodgkin lymphoma is a cancer that starts in the lymphocytes, the cells of the lymphatic system, which extends across the body. Hodgkin lymphoma usually begins in a group of lymph nodes in one part of the body, most often the neck. It grows in a predictable, orderly way from one lymph node group to the next. Eventually, it can spread to almost any tissue or organ in the body through the lymphatic system or the bloodstream.

The pancreas is a large gland that lies behind the stomach, deep inside the upper abdomen. The pancreas is part of the digestive system and is also part of the hormonal system, for which it makes insulin and other hormones. Most pancreatic cancers start in the ducts that carry pancreatic juices.
The prostate is part of the male reproductive system. This gland’s main function is to make seminal fluid, which mixes with sperm from the testicles to make semen. Prostate cancer is the most common type found in men. It usually grows slowly and can often be cured or successfully managed. Nevertheless, prostate cancer is the third leading cause of death by cancer in men.
The most common types of skin cancer are squamous cell cancer and basal cell cancer. Both are known as non-melanoma skin cancer and can usually be treated successfully.

More than 90 percent of testicular cancers start in germ cells, which are the spermforming cells within the testicles. Other types of cancer can spread to the testicles, at which point they are called testicular metastasis. It is the most common cancer to occur in young men who are between 15 and 29 years old.

Show your support Primary bone cancer starts in the bone’s cells.

We are all affected, directly or indirectly, by cancer at some point in our lives. Thanks to the generosity of donors and the work of its personnel, the Canadian Cancer Society is the leader in the fight against this illness.

1- WE CREATE A MORE DYNAMIC BUSINESS CLIMATE Success leads to success. The more prosperous businesses we have, the more the local climate will encourage other entrepreneurs to set up businesses and create still more jobs. 2- WE GAIN MORE PROPERTY TAX INCOME TO INVEST IN OUR INFRASTRUCTURE The more thriving businesses we have, the more they will be able to expand. The more they expand, the more property and business tax they will pay, generating money that can be used for the good of our town and our citizens. 3- WE IMPROVE SERVICES A prosperous local economy is conducive to improvements in social, medical, and sports and liesure services, as well as in tourism, the arts, and entertainment. 4- WE HAVE MORE CHOICE AND A WIDER VARIETY OF PRODUCTS The sales figures of a business reflect its financial health, and when business is good, expansion projects multiply. Expansion brings new products and new services to our community. 5- WE BENEFIT LOCAL COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS Non-profit organizations receive many donations from local business people. Donations are essential to their survival, so it follows that the healthier the economy, the healthier our organizations.

6- WE MAINTAIN THE UNIQUE CHARACTER OF OUR TOWN AND REGION The charm of a municipality is in its dynamism and character. Those go hand in hand with its economic health. A municipality that can count on its population to buy locally is a muncipality to be envied. 7- WE CREATE MORE JOBS IN OUR TOWN AND REGION A thriving job market depends on the economic health of our region. 8- WE HAVE A POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT Local enterprises purchase a lot more local products, greatly reducing the transportation of products from outside the region. 9- WE SUPPORT OUR REGION IN THE SEARCH FOR INVESTORS If our region has a dynamic economy, it is bound to attract investors. If our municipality receives revenues from business and property taxes, it can work to attract investors as well. Investors are like consumers: they are attracted to regions that are attractive! 10- WE INVEST IN OUR REGION For all the reasons listed above, buying local is logical, beneficial, and highly efficient. Buying local creates the economic leverage that is vital to the dynamism of a region. By working together we can support our local economy.

Tyler Dahlman
Tyler comes to us from Regina, Saskatchewan. After visiting our area on a ski trip or two, he and his wife chose to move to our beautiful area for the outdoor lifestyle that we’re famous for, not to mention the fact that a smaller community was very much a factor. “This seems like a great place to raise a family, which we’re really looking forward to!”, states Tyler. Having been originally hired as service manager in November 2012, Tyler was excited to accept the opportunity to serve as Sales Manager. Having enjoyed a successful sales career with Nissan in Regina, this was a natural progression in his automotive career. With expertise in service and parts as well as having achieved a Nissan, “Club Excellence Award,” for distinguished sales achievement, you can rest assured that Tyler is qualified to see to it that your automobile purchase or lease experience is first rate.
