Education Minister visits Cranbrook SALLY MACDONALD Townsman Staff
Wearing a Good Ol’ Goats t-shirt everywhere he went, B.C.’s Education Minister Don McRae visited Cranbrook on Thursday, April 11. The MLA for Comox Valley first met with School District 5 Trustees on Wednesday evening, April 10, to talk about the replacement of Cranbrook’s Mount Baker Secondary School. Built in 1949, Mount Baker is slated to be replaced by a Neighbourhood Learn-
ing Centre focused on theatre and the arts – as soon as capital funding is approved by the provincial government. “Mount Baker was identified four years ago as being over capacity with deteriorating conditions, and SD5 therefore made it our number one replacement priority for the whole district,” said Chris Johns, chair of the SD5 Mount Baker Replacement Committee.

With the temperature on the way up and the snow on the way out, local golf courses are setting up for the season, with some already open. Cranbrook and the neighbouring area have an abundance of courses to choose from, and something for even the most seasoned golfer. All of the area’s courses are surrounded by stunning scenery and plenty of amenities. Of the courses, all but one are set to open by the end of next week and many already have golfers swinging

The Cranbrook Golf Club is now open for the season with both the course and driving range open. The club is reporting great early season conditions and is open two weeks earlier than usual. Mission Hills Golf Course also already has its 18 holes open. Wildstone Golf Course is planning to open its course April 19.

TOMORROW’S JACKPOT IS A RECORD-BREAKING
Are you looking for a way to give back to your community and have fun at the same time? The Cranbrook and District Chamber of Commerce could have just the opportunity. The Chamber is seeking volunteers to man the visitor centre at Elizabeth Lake this summer, from June to September. “It’s a lot of fun. Our current volunteers love it. You get to meet lots of new people,” said Nicole Butler at the Chamber. You don’t need to know all there is to know about Cranbrook in order to help visitors, she went on. “You learn lots doing it. All our volunteers do a training course. We teach them that the most important thing is not if you know the answer, but if you know where to find it,” said Butler. And if you want to go away for a summer vacation, that can be accommodated. “We are really flexible with hours so if people need time off for holidays, that’s totally
not a problem,” said Butler. The Visitor Centre is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Volunteers are asked to take a four-hour shift, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. You would be working with other volunteers on each shift, welcoming visitors to Cranbrook and helping them with everything they need to enjoy their time here. “When tourists come in, they are the first faces a lot of people see,” said Butler. In training, new volunteers will get to know local maps, publications, and frequently asked questions. Volunteers will also be familiarized with local accommodations, restaurants and tourist attractions. To learn more about volunteering at the Visitor Centre, contact Nicole Butler at 250-4265914. There will be an open house for people interesting in becoming volunteers on Thursday, April 18 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Chamber of Commerce office.

Ed minister visits overcrowded school Continued from page 1 “Frankly, we’ve done more work and more public consultation on this NLC initiative than any other district in the province, including those districts who’ve been approved. We have key partnerships with the City of Cranbrook, Key City Theatre and our MLA Bill Bennett. We just need a commitment from government to go ahead.” On Thursday morning, Minister McRae then got to see the overcrowded school during lessons for the 980 kids. Grade 12 students Danika Nicolagsen and Catherine Cameron gave Minister McRae a tour of the school, starting in the choir room. Local band The Good Ol’ Goats were having a band practise, and music teacher Evan Bueckert gave Minister McRae a Goats t-shirt, which he immediately put on while listening to the Goats perform. During the rest of the tour, Minister McRae visited Aboriginal Education, Spanish, art, physical education and electronics classrooms, among others. At the conclusion of the tour, Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett reminded McRae that, while the school might be full of programs for students, the facility is letting the students down. “Such great things are happening in this school, but it’s the building,” Bennett said. Principal Jason Tichauer said the tour was an accurate representation of the school. “You saw Baker as Baker,” he said. “We do great things here every day, so we don’t need to put on a show.” Minister McRae said he recognizes the need to replace Mount Baker. “We can’t forget about areas outside the lower mainland,” he said. “This is a high pri-
ority for us and Bill doesn’t let us forget about that in Victoria.” Next on McRae’s agenda was a visit to the Bank of Montreal on Cranbrook’s Baker Street to remind parents about a $1,200 grant the province offers for every child born since 2007. Through the B.C. Training and Education Savings Grant, parents can register their child for a Registered Education Savings Plan at any financial institution, and when the child turns six the government will contribute $1,200.
“We want all British Columbia families with children under the age of seven to know how easy it is to access the $1,200 B.C. Training and Education Savings Grant. If parents already have an RESP for their child set up, they’ve already taken the most important step to get
the grant. If they haven’t set up an RESP to get the grant, then the time to do so is now.” For more information, visit www.budget2013.ca/bc-training-and-education-savings-grant. Finally, MLA Bennett took Minister McRae to the Cran-
brook Rotary Club, where he talked about the government’s goal to reach a 10-year agreement with public school teachers. “I’m looking forward to making sure the education system is celebrated, it is refined, it is improved – we have to do that – but in the end,
the students get a quality education so they can benefit themselves, their families, stay in communities like Cranbrook and, if they choose to go out and see the world, they’ll have more base to work on than they have ever had in the past,” said Minister McRae.

A little further out of town, St. Eugene Golf Resort has set April 20 as its opening day. the resort said that overall the whole valley is in good shape this year, and their course is no exception. Way-Lyn Ranch Golf Course located between Cranbrook and Kimberley is open for the season. Kimberley itself has an array of courses. It is
home to Trickle Creek, Bootleg Gap and the Kimberley Golf Course. All three Kimberley clubs expressed that the recent cool weather has slowed some of the progress in prepping the courses for opening, but, barrig any drastic changes, should open on their respected dates. Trickle Creek is planning to open May 10. Bootleg Gap plans on
having nine holes open Friday, and the full 18 holes open April 19, as long as weather permits. The Kimberley Golf Course is planning to have the front nine open Monday, April 15 and staff hope to have the rest of the course open by April 19 or 20. In Jaffray, Will-OBend Golf Course is already open, and course representatives said it’s been a good winter for a golf course.

Dentists play key role in early detection of oral cancers
In 2009, the BC Cancer Agency documented more than 500 new cases of oral cancer. It is estimated that over 8 0 p e r c e nt of t he s e cases could be detected by a dentist.1 Healthy behaviours and early detection are key factors to reducing cancer incidence and improving outcomes. Dentists have an important role to play in the early detection of oral cancers as dentists tend to see patients on a regular basis when they are well, rather than when they are already sick. As a result, dentists can help detect suspicious lesions in the mouth before the patient has any symptoms. The BC Cancer Agency has developed Oral Cancer Screening Guidelines for adult dental patients in BC over the age of forty. All the elements for screening and monitoring outlined in the guidelines may not be included in every examination by your dentist, but will be considered along with your medical history, age and health behaviours. During your dental exam, your dentist will inspect all the soft tissues in your mouth including your gums, lips, cheeks, tongue, floor of your mouth and the roof of your mouth. Your dentist will also feel along your jaw, and other areas of your head and neck for any unusual tenderness, lumps or swelling. Your dentist may also use some optional screening tools that use a special light, dyes or scrapings to have a more detailed examination of certain areas of your mouth. These are not a required part of your
dental exam, but may be used by your dentist based on your health history and lifestyle factors, or if he or she needs to examine a particular area of your mouth more closely. In some dental offices, the hygienist may also use these tools, but the dentist needs to evaluate the findings to determine your diagnosis. If your dentist identifies a suspicious lesion in your mouth or a lump that is not going away, he or she may recommend that you have a biopsy. Your dentist may do the biopsy or may refer you to another dental or medical professional to have this done. The decision about any required treatment is most often based on the biopsy result. While the incidence of oral cancers in Canada may be low relative to breast and prostate cancers, the effects of oral cancers on patient quality of life can be devastating. There is no single cause of oral cancer. It results from a variety of factors and how individual patients react to those factors. Seventy-five percent of oral cancers can be attributed to exposure to tobacco or alcohol.2 In particular, patients who chew tobacco, betel quid/ areca nut/paan; drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes (especially together) or are exposed to second-hand smoke; smoke marijuana; have a diet low in fruits and vegetables; have had an HPV (human papilloma virus) infection (type 16); or have chronic gum disease3 can increase their risk of getting an oral cancer by four to ten times. Maintaining good daily oral hygiene, having your teeth cleaned professionally on a

regular basis, and adopting healthy behaviours is good for your body, and your mouth. Have a dental examination by a dentist at least once per year and report any lingering sores or tenderness in your mouth or surrounding areas to your dentist or physician as soon as possible. Your dentist is your ‘doctor of the mouth’, and an integral part of your preventive health care team. If you have any questions about your personal risk for oral cancer, speak to your dentist or physician.
SignS and SymptomS of oral cancer Other health conditions can have the same signs and symptoms as oral cancer, so having any of the following symptoms does not necessarily mean a person has cancer. However, it is important to see a doctor about: • an ulcer or sore in the mouth that doesn’t heal • a lump in the lip, mouth, gums, tongue, or roof of mouth • thickening in the cheek

Cranbrook Community Theatre
The flight to paradise
If the enchantment is missing in your life, where do go to find it? And how do you know when you have?
A
t the beginning of “Enchanted April,” Cranbrook Community Theatre’s current production opening tonight, Charlotte Wilton brings us news of the death throes of the Edwardian era. The time period is several years after the bloodbath of the Great War, and the widespread killing of the ensuing influenza epidemic. But the play’s characters in grimy, bleak, dark, coal-sooted England, plagued with endless rain, have not yet accepted that their old world has been demolished. They are clinging fast to their comfortable morning jacket habits — their C. of E. religious conventions, their copies of the Times delivered promptly, their ossified literature, the precise determination of their day by the clock. Only Lotty is aware that they are all existing in a shadowland, and that flight is the only answer. She will take as many companions as she can on her quest for
paradise regained, but she understands that in a voyage of redemption like this, she cannot choose her own, they must be chosen for her by whatever providence remains. But is Lotty hawk or is she hummingbird? Is she saviour or temptor? Her first encounter leads to the existential argument that will flow throughout the play — is heaven to be found outside, or is it grown inside oneself, which is the view of Rose Arnott (Jennifer Inglis). Rose is heavily burdened with disappointment and with the decreasing comforts of church. Like Lotty, she is unhappy in her marriage — Frederick Arnott (Peter Schalk) is a successful novelist who doesn’t realize his work is already out of date and will soon be rendered obsolete by the angry voices of the Moderns. Mellersh Wilton, Lotty’s husband, seems untouched by the revolutions and despair of the previous years, and is dismayed by any variation to his petty bourgeois routine.
Lady Caroline Bramble (Michelle Lemay) is one who has tried to move on. She has embraced the trappings of the Jazz Age, the new era that has grown in like fireweed in place of the old. But even the Roaring Twenties can’t scar over the wound in her soul. The fourth travelling companion is the insufferable Anglo-Saxon literary maven, Mrs. Clayton Graves (Nicola Kaufman), whose choolmistress persona and rigid adherence to the glories of empire make her the most unlikely companion to the other three. Can there be redemption even for her, in the paradise towards which Lotty is leading them? In other words, is heaven a place where healing happens? In other words again, is a vacation really good for what ails ya?
Barry Coulter photo
Charlotte Wilton (Tracey McGuire, left) and Rose Arnott (Jennifer Inglis, right) wonder if they’ve gone terribly wrong in their choice of travelling companions as they listen to Mrs. Graves’ (Nicola Kaufman) list of demands. After a dark, stygian train ride through bleakest night, these four dissimilar women arrive at that fabled land they are seeking. Which is, of course, Italy — specifically a rented castle with a view of a sapphire sea and bathed by endless sunlight. The castle is
owned by the elegant and affable Anthony Wilding (David Popoff) and staffed by the inimitable, daunting Signora Costanza (Andrea Grossman). The roar of Italy certainly banishes the grey haze of En-
gland, but can it banish the sadness from our Englishwomen’s hearts? “Enchanted April,” a play written by Matthew Barber from the novel by Elizabeth Von Arnim, opens Friday, April 12, at the Studio/Stage Door
in Cranbrook, and will run every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday until April 27. It is directed by Terry Miller and produced by Sally Masters. Showtime is 8 p.m. Tickets are available at Lotus Books.

Leadership and all that Jazz A
couple of weeks ago, I wrote a column about Pope Francis and the new way in which he was going about being a Pope. He has won widespread acclaim thus far in the early days of his papacy with popular gestures like washing the feet of juveniles during Holy Week and refusing many papal perks. Someone asked me about that column. “Do you think that his humility will change the way the Roman Catholic Church and the Vatican works? Do you really think that’s going to be enough?” It led to an interesting discussion. The short answer is “Yes … and no!” I take my cue from Max DePree, a best– selling author about what it takes to exercise leadership in today’s world. In his book “Leadership Jazz: The Essential Elements of a Great Leader”, he reminds us that leadership is more an art than a science. It’s like playing jazz. “Today’s successful leaders are attuned to the needs and ideas of their followers and even step aside at times to be followers themselves.” DePree has been influential in my understanding of leadership. In one remarkably concise statement, he reminds us that a leader has two primary tasks: to articulate the vision of the organization, and to say thank you. It’s that first task of leadership that is driving my initial assessment of Pope Francis. He is articulating a new vision for the church he leads; more importantly, he’s living it out. A leader such as this can inspire followers by his actions. He is ask-
ing a different set of questions: “How can we be a church for the poor? How can we serve? How can we live humbly and set an example for others?” These are important questions to ask. In fact, I would say that the questions are more important than the answers. Pope Francis is seeking a new way forward, and his initial days as Pope are very promising. He wants to get back to the roots of his faith, and the church’s faith, that Jesus lived among the poor and embraced the outcasts, and Rev. Yme welcomed them all. So instead of washing the Woensdregt feet of 12 priests on Maundy Thursday to commemorate Jesus washing the feet of his disciples, this Pope goes to a juvenile detention home to wash the feet of teenagers. Many of those teens were “Roma” — what we used to call “gypsies” — people scorned throughout Europe. Even more shocking to traditionalists, Pope Francis washed the feet of two young women, one a Muslim. That has not happened in recent memory! What a profound, symbolic act. This Pope refuses to live in the luxurious papal apartments, choosing to live in a much more modest guest house instead. This Pope sometimes cooks his own meals. This Pope mingles with the ordinary folk in the square in front of St. Peter’s. We should not minimize the importance of such actions. They have power to inspire the world. He is articulating the vision. All of this is the “yes” part of my answer.
The “no” part is that by itself, this will not be enough. In addition to articulating a vision, a leader must also build a community which can put that vision into place. Now the hard work begins for Pope Francis as he begins to reform the Vatican. The Roman Catholic Church is dealing with scandals and issues which must be met head on: allegations of sexual abuse and pedophilia; a bureaucracy marked by infighting and careerism; the issue of women in ministry; Vatican finances; reforming significant departments of the Curia; and the list goes on. He chose the name Francis. Today we call him St. Francis. In his day, however, he was seen as just being an oddity, weird, a screwball. He divested himself of all his wealth — or, as he put it, he married a widow named Lady Poverty. He did not enter a cloister as an earlier generation might have done, but sent his disciples into the villages of Europe to preach, to live a life of holiness, and to embrace poverty. St. Francis felt himself called to reform a church which had become too worldly. It may be that the verdict of history is that Pope Francis could be nothing more than an oddity, holy but eccentric. I choose, however, to be hopeful that his actions may well inspire some real change, even if it be modest. Will it be enough? I don’t know. It’s going to be an uphill struggle for him. I will pray for his success. Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook.

Here you are, you nasty fellow, amidst all those piles of dusty old newspapers. And did we say “nasty”? Heavens, that’s an understatement by half. And did we say “under” the newspapers? We meant actually “in” the newspapers, in more ways than one. Heck, you helped print a bunch of them; set the type, took your paycheck and went home to your wife and children somewhere here in Cranbrook back in ... ah, yes, 1915, or perhaps late 1914? Just before that illustrious old Prospector newspaper — late of Fort Steele, less later of Cranbrook — closed up shop, which is very likely why you moved on to Calgary shortly thereafter. Just two children then, the third would come in a year or so. It is fitting that we find you in a stack of old newspapers, very fitting indeed. Speaking of newspapers, an article on Page three of the April 30, 1920, local Herald reads, in part: “Just prior to the suspension of the Cranbrook Prospector, a Thomas W. Simpkins [sic] was employed on that sheet. With the typographical men he was always looked upon as being an ‘odd one’ ...” Page three, mind you, almost not worth a mention. In fact, the editor would have likely preferred not to mention it at all — no sense in drawing attention to newspapermen gone bad. Then again it was news, news with a local spin and news is news even if it’s bad news or, perhaps, more so if it’s bad news. Now, let’s have a quick glance at your curriculum vitae, Mr. Thomas William Simpkin: Born Aug. 22 1879, Mile End London. Father died 1883, leaving a penniless wife and four children under the age of six, of which you were one. Raised in Dr. Stephenson’s Children’s Home & Orphanage and trained as a typesetter, as was your father before you. Immigrated to Canada in 1912, married Maude Shelley in Winnipeg and travelled to Cranbrook, B.C. where you gained employment with the local newspaper on 9th Avenue. The paper folded, you moved to Calgary and worked at various newspapers there. Joined the Canadian Army in 1916 and deserted soon afterwards. Reemerged in Duluth, Minnesota, September, 1916 — thereupon employed in
A young Thomas Simpkin: dapper, confident and certifiably insane.
St. George’s Episcopal Church, Stuyvesant Square, New York. several printing plants and then, Mr. Simpkin? Hmm, and then it appears things began going rather badly. Of course there were always problems with the world in general that you desired to correct; profiteering, the League of Nations, the multi-millionaire financiers, money in general, it would appear. Religion didn’t seem to help, nor did spiritualism, even your conversations with those from “the other side”, and then,
well, and then you were placed in the Minnesota State insane asylum. You escaped within the year by tying bed sheets together and climbing down three stories to freedom; freedom of the asylum but not of your demons. You managed to travel to Richmond, Virginia, to find work as a mechanic with a stationery company under the alias of Thomas Shelley. Your diagnosis of stomach cancer in 1919 and the three operations that followed certainly didn’t
help things, nor did the time you spent in the Eastern State Hospital for the Insane in Williamsburg, Virginia, where you claimed to be a newspaper editor and an actor, a comedian in fact, while your destitute family was deported to England. And then you finally ended up in New York City. Stuyvesant Square in Manhattan to be exact, St. George’s Episcopal Protestant Church to be precise. You chose that particular grand old edifice because that was where wealthy industrialist and financier J. Pierpont Morgan worshipped regularly as did many of his relatives and it was him that you were planning to kill on that frosty Sunday morning of April 18, 1920, as you sat in a pew towards the rear. J.P. Morgan had been dead for lo these seven years, mind you, but it mattered not, for in your mind, Thomas Simpkin, it was time to kill someone. And so, as the gentlemen of the congregation began to take up the collection you arose, aimed your revolver and started firing as you walked down the aisle. Your first bullet struck and mortally wounded the well known surgeon Dr. James Markoe as he carried the collection plate. Ironically, he was the former physician and good friend of the deceased J.P. Morgan. Your second shot grazed the cheek of usher J. Morgan Jones and your third barely missed Herbert Satterlee, J.P. Morgan’s brother-in-law. Fleeing from the church you were pursued by a group of male churchgoers and, in the resulting melee, managed to fire one more shot with your revolver trapped inside your coat pocket, setting the cloth on fire and slightly wounding Dr. George Brewer. And then it was done, for you at least, although the reverberations carried on for some time as they tend to do when good citizens of high-standing are assassinated in a church for no apparent reason. You were sent to Mattawan State Hospital for the Criminally Insane where you died a few years later. As to your legacy, Thomas William Simpkin, it remains in the fact that within one month a N.Y. Grand Jury advocated changes in lunacy laws to allow that a person judged insane in any sister state also be presumed insane in New York State and further that verdicts involving lunatics be changed to read “Guilty, but Insane.” Then, too, there is your local legacy: You lived here, worked here, walked the streets, set the lettering of those old newspapers stored in local vaults. It is safe to say, Thomas Simpkin, that, if nothing else, you managed to make some headlines.

Catching fire on the court TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor
The game itself might not have been pretty, but in the end, the Mount Baker Wild basketball team managed to eek out a close win against the Cranbrook Firefighters in a charity game on Thursday night. The Firefighters put up a good fight, but the Wild were unrelenting and held the lead for most of the game, which ended by a score of 5351. The event was a fundraiser for the B.C. Professional Fire Fighter’s Burn Fund, which provides live saving and supportive services to burn survivors and advocates for burn safety issues in the province. “It’s just a great chance to get back into the community, get a chance to know some of

the kids in high school and make a little bit of money for charity—the B.C. Professional Fire Fighters Burn Fund,” said Murray Robertson, a fire fighter who organized the third annual event. Decked out with bandannas, wigs and grass skirts, the fire fighters had trouble stopping their younger and more skilled opponents, however, for both sides, the emphasis was on fun. “I can’t wait for next year to do this,” said Heidi Anderson, a Grade 11 student on the girls basketball squad. “It’s for a good cause and it’s fun to get the community together.” PT the Clown was on the sidelines to entertain the kids, while the Mount Baker Cheer Team put on a show at the halftime break.

Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame inducts new class Gregory Strong Canadian Press
TORONTO - Only a handful of curlers have accomplished as much as Russ Howard did over his long career. Even fewer can say they helped revolutionize the game. Howard, who will be inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame this October, said one of his favourite memories was creating the so-
called Moncton Rule the forerunner to the Free Guard Zone which helped create more offence in curling. “It has really changed the sport,” Howard said Thursday from his hometown of Moncton. “Now that I’m a TV guy, you can see the (ratings) and the numbers are growing big-time because the sport is so much
Martial arts studio fundraising for national trip Tre vor Cr awley Sports Editor
Students with a local martial arts school are using a showcase to help raise some money that will go towards transportation costs to Ottawa for a national competition. The Rocky Mountain Academy of Martial Arts (RMAMA) has five students that qualified for nationals in their respective classes at a provincial tournament in Fernie a few weeks ago, but the trip to Ottawa is quite a hit to the pocketbook. With that in mind, RMAMA is putting on a fundraising evening to showcase the talents of their students, as the studio wants to raise $5,000 from now until nationals, which kicks off on May 8th. “We’re just putting something together to entertain people, give people a taste of what we do here,” said RMAMA owner Joel Huncar. “We’re going to have
some sparring matches between some of our fighters and some demos from some of our kids and that kind of stuff. Cole McNulty, Tage Leiman, Dave Buckley Logan Robertson and Tyson Hirscher all qualified for nationals at a provincial tournament in Fernie a few weeks ago. This will be the first time Huncar has taken his charges to a national event. “Honestly, up until I opened this place, I only taught for self defense and discipline—I did it as a hobby kind of thing and this focus on sports and getting these kids to tournaments is a new thing for me so it’s opened up a whole new world for me, as a coach,” said Huncar. “It’s been really interesting and really fun.” The showcase will be hosted at the RMAMA gym on April 20th and tickets run for $10.
more exciting, partly because of that rule.” The rule, implemented in the early 1990s, forced teams to deal with the rocks in play rather than rely on the option of consistently clearing them out. It also created more scoring, comeback opportunities and excitement. Howard won national and world titles in 1987 and 1993 and added an Olympic gold medal with skip Brad Gushue of Newfoundland and Labrador in
2006. Howard was named in the Hall’s athlete category Thursday along with former NHL star Joe Sakic, cyclist Alison Sydor, Paralympian Andre Viger and the 1992 Olympic champion women’s coxless four rowing team of Kirsten Barnes, Brenda Taylor, Jessica Monroe-Gonin, Kay Worthington and Jennifer Walinga. “I knew I had done pretty well in my career as a curler but you don’t parallel it with
other athletes in other sports, especially the big-time sports like hockey and football, baseball, stuff like that,” Howard said. “So it’s pretty cool.” Former Canadian Amateur Hockey Association president Murray Costello and sport development architect Dr. Jean-Guy Ouellet will be inducted as builders. The official induction ceremony will be held Oct. 16. Howard is the 14th curler to be named to Canada’s Sports Hall of
CHICAGO - The Chicago Cubs found a severed goat’s head at Wrigley Field on Wednesday, and they’re treating the cruel reference to a longtime curse as a crime. Chicago police are investigating the delivery of the head addressed to Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts after they responded to a call around 2:30 p.m. indicating an “intimidating package” had been received. Cubs spokesman Julian Green said Thursday staff at Wrigley Field discovered the package and immediately called police. “Obviously, it’s just an unfortunate fan doing something pretty stupid,” Cubs manager Dale Sveum said. Ricketts is currently in negotiations with city officials and neighbourhood business people about a $300 million renovation of Wrigley Field. Associated Press
Sydor won Olympic silver at the 1996 Atlanta Games and won world titles in 1994, ‘95 and ‘96. She was a three-time medallist at the Pan American Games and earned 17 career World Cup mountain bike victories. Viger, who died in 2006, was one of best wheelchair racers of all-time. He won 10 medals over five appearances at the Paralympic Games and held world records at several distances.

Local cancer survivors group meets Wednesday Dennis Parsons

The Prostate Cancer Canada Cranbrook Support Group, holds regular meetings at the College of the Rockies for men and their partners, who were diagnosed or interested in prostate cancer. Since men find it difficult to talk about their own bodies and health, these meetings are a place where men can ask questions about prostate cancer, treatments, as well as share experiences and information in confidentiality. This support group started in 2008 as a result of two cancer survivors trying to fill the void of information for men when diagnosed with prostate cancer. There is information on the inter-
net and from doctors, but speaking first hand with men who went through the process and realizing they aren’t alone, is what created the support group. Common questions in the mind of a recently diagnosed patient are: How do you choose a treatment method? Where can you find a good surgeon or radiation oncologist? What is it like to have beads of radiation inserted into your system? Is it easier to get the 35 external radiation treatments? Meetings consist of men and their partners who listen to guest speakers or video presentations on various aspects of the disease or treatments. Following any presentation the men then share (on

The next meeting of the Cranbrook Support group will be on Wednesday, April 17, at 7 p.m. in room 205 of the College of the Rockies. Our guest speaker will be Ben Braun, a social worker with 42 years’ experience in mental health centers in Medicine Hat and the Elk Valley and Cranbrook. He has a Master’s degree in clinical social work from Wilfred Laurier University. The title of Ben’s talk will be ‘Cancer, Death and other Taboos.’ Everyone is welcome to attend.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Be careful what you ask for, because you just might get it ... and later be sorry that you did. Stay centered. Try not to exaggerate, especially when dealing with an authority figure. This person could be quirky at best. Deal with others on an individual basis. Tonight: Your treat. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Someone you are dealing with could do a total reversal. Your discussions might have seemed right-on, but obviously there was a vulnerability that was not discussed. Be nurturing, and give this person space to open up. Tonight: Know that you have done as much as possible. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You might want to rethink your direction in a partnership. At the last minute, this person could pull the rug right out from under you. Do you really want to deal with this kind of behavior? Think about how to proceed. Get feedback. Tonight: Whatever feels right.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) You can’t hide your enthusiasm for the upcoming weekend. You still might need to complete a project, whether it’s doing your taxes or spring cleaning. Just when you thought a situation was going one way, it suddenly might change direction. Tonight: Only what you want. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Others look up to you. Just when you think everything is under control, chaos erupts. Someone is taking a lesson on how to handle pressure just by watching you. Recognize when you hit a brick wall, and walk away, at least for now. Tonight: To the wee hours. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Someone’s stubbornness forces you to detach and rethink your plans. You need to head down a path with fewer obstacles. Understand that this person probably does not expect this response from you. Unusual reactions head your way. Tonight: Take in different vistas. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You might be off on some ad-
For Better or Worse
venture -- at least in your mind -- when someone suddenly hits you with unexpected news. You might not appreciate this touch of reality, but you will be grounded as a result. Deal with the problem at hand. Tonight: Togetherness works well. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You have a way of testing others’ limits, and today is no exception. Calls come in and meetings happen. Know that you inadvertently could trigger someone. Expect to be jolted by this person’s reaction. Claim your power. Use it well, and when it is important. Tonight: Hang out. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Your creativity emerges when dealing with a sudden change. Be cautious about taking any risks, especially if they are financial, as you could set yourself back in a big way. Be willing to distance yourself or just say “no.” Tonight: Head home. If possible, go for a walk. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You have started using your creativity more frequently, and
now you are fairly sure of yourself. Some people find you to be an endless source of inspiration. Be practical when dealing with a difficult issue, as there are unseen complications. Tonight: Let the weekend begin. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Your mind is focused on a personal or domestic matter. You also could be going over the pros and cons of a situation. Try to get through what you must, quickly and efficiently. Allow yourself more dream time -- but not at work. Call it an early day. Tonight: Out and about. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You have a way with words that makes others step back and listen. You might not be as sure of yourself as you could or should be. A friend or a meeting seems to stand between you and a long-desired goal. Bypass them both. Tonight: Meet friends for munchies and drinks. Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My sister, “Suzie,” has always been a bit of a flower child, and my parents think it’s funny. Suzie dropped out of high school to pursue her “career” in something -- art, music, dance, yoga, whatever. I usually gave her a place to stay when she got evicted and didn’t want our parents to know, which was pretty often. Suzie and her husband (I’m not sure whether they’re legally married) have been better since my nephews were born. What concerns me is that she won’t take the kids to the doctor when they get sick. She just gives them some herbal remedy and sends them to bed. The boys aren’t very clean, often have the sniffles and are almost always in clothing that’s the wrong size. Suzie is homeschooling the boys, even though neither she nor her husband graduated high school. My oldest nephew is 7 and cannot read, count to 10 or say his ABCs. Suzie insists that the children be fed only vegan and organic products. When the boys stay with us, which is fairly often lately, we feed them healthy balanced meals that they wolf down like they’re starving. The oldest boy told me they usually eat oatmeal with some peanut butter in it. I believe both boys are anemic. The family has, on occasion, lived in their car. Suzie recently said they are going to “live on the road” for a while and the boys will adjust. I think my nephews are being neglected. She’s leaving the boys with me for two weeks this summer, and I’m tempted to have Child Protective Services evaluate them. My wife agrees. My parents don’t. I’m scared Suzie will bolt with the kids if she gets wind of my suspicions. She’s done it before. I want the best for my nephews. How do I go about it? -- W.C. Dear W.C.: Don’t wait until summer. Call Child Protective Services anonymously, and ask them to investigate the home environment now. (You need not inform your parents.) CPS may determine that the kids are in a loving, healthy-enough environment, in which case, please stop trying to wrest control from Suzie, and concentrate instead on making your home a safe, stable place for your nephews. And if CPS determines that the kids need to be removed from Suzie’s care, we hope you will offer to take them. Dear Annie: My wife and I recently went out for dinner with her parents, who are healthy active seniors. Upon being seated, they spent the entire evening commenting on others. Engaging them in conversation was impossible. Every time we’ve gone out with her parents, they have complained afterward: The restaurant was too noisy, crowded, hot, cold, drafty, dark, the portions were too small, cold, spicy, the service was slow, the seating was uncomfortable, etc. I don’t know why they bother dining out when they never seem to enjoy it. I find their behavior rude and insulting and have told my wife not to expect my attendance at any future restaurant meals. She thinks I am being unreasonable, that that is just “who they are.” I realize they are not going to change, but after nearly 20 years of this, I say count me out. Any suggestions? -At My Wits’ End Dear Wits’ End: These are your wife’s parents. Please be more tolerant, although you don’t need to punish yourself. For your wife’s sake, be willing to endure their “company” a few times a year. You can decline the rest of the time. Dear Annie: Bravo to “Frustrated Viewer in Canada” for complaining about the TV networks playing music over the dialogue and the actors who mumble and talk with their backs to the camera. Producers might be interested to know that a lot of us have gone back to reading books instead of watching the programs we used to enjoy. -- Nancy Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. I Need a Home
Ty is a 3 year old neutered male, lab/ rotti cross. Ty came into our shelter because his previous guardian did not have the time to exercise Ty. Ty is an extremely active dog. He LOVES to play fetch. You could teach Ty almost anything if you have a toy in your hand. Ty knows how to sit, lay down, shake both paws, and if you say “what do you say” he speaks. Ty is very high energy and would benefit highly from obedience classes. Ty is good on leash if he knows he can’t get away with pulling. He would do fine in a home with older children. Ty has a big personality, he should go to a home that is very active. He loves to go running and is good with almost all other dogs.

HAPPY is a 1 year old short haired black and white cat, spayed female. Happy is a timid, but sweet girl. She can be a little shy at first and would do best in a quiet home at the start. She is young and once she was settled she would be an amazing companion. She is very affectionate and likes to be held and cuddled. Happy has a nice, gentle demeanor. Happy needs a loving and nurturing environment. 22-10th Ave. S., Cranbrook, BC 250-489-1729 www.thepawshop.ca thepawshop@hotmail.com

DEZZIE is a stray that showed up at a staff members house. She is very timid but affectionate. She is young, about a year and a half. She gets along with cats and would do fine with dogs that wont overwhelm her. Dezzie should go to a quieter home, she does get stressed out fairly easy at first. She is a beautiful color, one I have never seen before, a short haired Brown torti.

KITTY came in to our shelter as a stray, we think he is about 9 months old. Kitty has lots of energy and loves to play. He is very social with people. Kitty is very gentle and sweet, he would do great in a home with children who want a companion to love and cuddle. He is quite energetic and would probably make a great mouser. Adoption Driven Capacity: A shelter’s key to saving lives and providing great care.
I need a home
CAPTAIN HOOK came to our shelter as a surrender. He is very friendly, but can be a little shy at first. He would do great in a home with other cats, he gets along with them very well. He came in with his mom (Delma) and his sister, Happy. Captain Hook would do best in a quieter home, as he does have a higher stress level. He is still young so plenty of time to learn to be loved and settle into his new family.
What is the perfect number of animals to have up for adoption in any one shelter? We are finding out from research done by other shelter and welfare organizations that having too many cats and/or dogs in any one shelter compromises the welfare and adoptability of these animals. Cats stay much longer because if you have many, many cats and only a few are adopted the remaining cats tend to stay longer. Life in a cage is not the optimum way to spend time, even though here in our shelter, we try to give our cats lots of attention and enrichment. The new thought is if you have less cats, they are happier, less likely to succumb to sickness caused by stress, and are more adoptable. Hence, if they leave the shelter more quickly they make room for more to come in and find homes.

BABALOO is a 12 year old spayed female short hair black cat. She is very sweet and calm. Babaloo came in with her sister “Holley Pepper” and they are quite bonded. We would love to see them go to a home together. Babaloo has always been an indoor cat. They are both quite happy to laze around in the sun and would do well in a retirement home with someone who can spend lots of time loving them.

We are asking the public to make an appointment to surrender cats if possible. We realize that this is not always possible and if any stray cats are in distress, injured, or needing care we will take them without an appointment. Owners need to be responsible for their own pets.
I need a home. JASPER came into our shelter as a stray. We think he is around 3 years old. Neutered Male Long hair Black cat. Jasper has a very nice personality. He is very laid back with a low stress level. He settles into new surroundings very well. Jasper likes other cats and would be fine in a home with dogs and children as well. Jasper would do well in almost any sort of home as long as he had some love and affection.
Bottom line is that if everyone spayed and/ or neutered their pets this problem would not exist. Spread the word!!!
Dental disease is one of the leading medical issues affecting our cats and dogs. It often goes unnoticed until there is so much damage to the teeth and gums that pets are in pain and losing their teeth. Ask about a dental exam on your next vet visit.

I need a home.
Adopters want to find healthy, happy, friendly, well-adjusted cats to take home and with fewer numbers in the shelter at any one time, the chances are much better. It is with this in mind that our shelter is taking in less cats. We are trying to utilize our foster homes to greater advantage, and are always in need of new tfoster homes. Kittens especially do well in the foster home environment.
Your pet needs dental care too.

the Basin environment through both direct action and education,” said Sabrina Curtis, CBT Director, Sector Initiatives, “helping reduce the impacts people have on our region’s aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.” One of the approved projects is Our Wish for BC Fish 2013. This environmental education and outreach program raises awareness and encourages stewardship in youth of BC’s natural resources. Aimed at grade five students, the program covers a variety of subject matter, including wild habitat preservation, human impacts, trout and sturgeon lifecycles, sturgeon as an endangered species and geographical and historical impacts. “The response to this
program has been overwhelmingly positive, both from the teachers’ perspectives and the students’,” said Leanne Jones, Outreach Coordinator, Kootenay Trout Hatchery. “By offering students interactive, hands-on opportunities to experience alternate methods of learning, we have enabled a wider audience to grasp various concepts. This program is an excellent example of combining learning with fun.” EIP provides support to community-initiated and -supported projects. It includes small grants geared at projects under $10,000 and large grants that, in the fall 2012 intake, funded projects up to $50,000. See the projects approved for funding.
Brain activity can predict what music we like: Study Canadian Press
TORONTO — Signals from a specific region of the brain can help scientists predict what music people are tempted to buy and how much money they’re willing to spend on it, a new study suggested. Research identified the particular area that becomes active when people hear a song for the very first time. Measuring activity in that area — known as the Nucleus Accumbens — allows scientists to accurately assess the degree to which people are enjoying the sounds they’re hearing. “This is the part of the brain that’s responsible for forming expectations over time,’’ lead researcher Valorie Salimpoor said in a telephone interview. ``This plays a big role in music because, as music is unfolding, we’re forming a lot of expectations.’’ Salimpoor and her colleagues at the McGill University’s Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital conducted their research by creating a mock music store resembling iTunes. Study participants browsed through 60 songs they had never heard before and were encouraged to use their
own money to acquire the ones they wanted. Participants underwent MRI scans as they perused the music selection and specified how much they were willing to spend on each song. Salimpoor said the amount of neural activity originating in the nucleus accumbens was an accurate predictor of how much the subjects were enjoying each individual song and what price they were willing to pay to obtain it. The pleasure people took from the new material was different from the anticipation of hearing a familiar song, she said, adding reactions to much-loved sounds originate in a different part of the brain. Researchers noted an interplay between the nucleus accumbens and the superior temporal cortex, the part of the brain that’s been shaped by all the sounds people have been exposed to throughout their lives. People develop different notions of how music ought to sound based on the music they’ve listened to over time, she said, adding everyone’s superior temporal cortex evolves differently based on their exposure to different styles.
