election picture nears completion Campaign officially kicks off this week to elect the next provincial government on May 14 By Jenn Mcgarrigle ThE NEwS BULLETIN

The remaining B.C. Liberal Party candidate to run in one of Nanaimo’s three electoral areas will be revealed early this week – just in time for the official start to the election season. Today (April 16), the writ of election – a formal order signed by the Chief Electoral Officer and the Lieutenant Governor calling for an election to be held – marks the start of campaign period and the candidate list in all three Nanaimo ridings is rounding out, with a Liberal candidate for the Nanaimo riding announced Sunday and a candidate for the Nanaimo-North Cowichan riding expected to be revealed shortly. Nanaimo-North Cowichan candidates include: John Sherry (Conservative Party of B.C.), Mayo McDonough (Green Party of B.C.), and incumbent Doug Routley (NDP). In Nanaimo, the list includes Bryce Crigger (Conservatives), Ian Gartshore (Green), Brunie Brunie (independent), Walter Anderson (Liberal), and incumbent Leonard Krog (NDP). Ryan Bruce, Vancouver Island regional organizer with the Liberal party, said the Nanaimo riding is the last in the region to fill up with candidates. “It’s taken a little longer than we’ve liked,” he said.

For Parksville-Qualicum, candidates include David Coupland (Conservative), Michelle Stilwell (Liberal) and Barry Avis (NDP). A candidate for the Green Party has yet to be announced. Over the next month until election day on May 14, candidates will ramp their campaigns into high gear. Voter registration closes April 23 so that Elections B.C. can do a final voter’s list – people can go to www.elections.bc.ca/ovr or call 1-800-661-8683 to update their information. And while details are not yet in, there will likely be several all-candidates meetings for residents to attend, including one the Nanaimo District Teachers’ Association is hosting for all three ridings on May 8 in Dover Bay Secondary School’s multipurpose room from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The South Wellington and Area Community Association is hosting a meet and greet for all candidates in the NanaimoNorth Cowichan riding tonight starting at 7 p.m. at the South Wellington Community Hall, 1555 Morden Rd. The Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce, with sponsorship from the News Bulletin, hosts a pre-election business forum for the Nanaimo riding April 23 at the Coast Bastion Inn. Company pulls out of Nanaimo marina deal By Chris haMlyn ThE NEwS BULLETIN

The Pacific Northwest Marina Group has backed out of a proposed 30-year lease of the Nanaimo Boat Basin. The memorandum of agreement signed between the Nanaimo Port Authority and Pacific Northwest in May 2012 expired April 1, and PNMG will not be taking on the revitalization and long-term lease of the Nanaimo marina. “While we are disappointed to lose this opportunity for

needed investment into our marina, we understand and respect the Pacific Northwest Marina Group’s desire to pursue other immediate opportunities,” said Bernie Dumas, CEO of Nanaimo Port Authority, in a press release. The lease agreement was to be finalized in the fall after PNMG had secured the necessary approvals for the redevelopment and satisfied several conditions related to the operation of the marina. The expected total commitment to the project by PNMG

was approximately $9 million and 100 per cent of the capital for the redevelopment was also coming from the developer. The proposal created a storm of controversy with local residents and marina stakeholders such as commercial fishermen, Protection Island residents and Snuneymuxw First Nation members. The port authority also received criticism for choosing a private company to manage what residents see as a public asset before putting it out to tender. u See ‘AGING’ /6

Job seekers line up for work at hiring fair I lINE up extended down Commercial street prior to opening. By Chris Bush

A child was lucky to escape apparently unscathed after falling into the Millstone River on the weekend. The incident happened just before 5 p.m. Saturday when a six-year-old boy fell over a steep bank and into the water at the falls in Bowen Park. He managed to pull himself up onto a rock in the river. “The child was able to get up on a rock and the grandmother called 911,” said Greg Norman, Nanaimo Fire Rescue assistant chief of operations. Firefighters arrived and decided to call in a technical rope rescue team to get the boy out safely after determining he had slipped about three to five metres over the bank. “We had people with the child fairly quick and then the tech rescue team assembled and that was the only way to get the child back up,” Norman said. “He wasn’t in running water. He was actually up on a rock, so we were able to work with that.” The child was handed over to paramedics at the scene and was taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital to be checked for possible injuries. photos@nanaimobulletin.com

Job seekers were lined up out the doors and down Commercial Street in hopes of finding work Thursday when the Supporting Employment Transitions and GT Hiring Solutions Job Fair opened at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre. More than 50 exhibitors, ranging from potential employers – including McDonald’s and Tim Hortons restaurant chains, the RCMP, Canadian Armed Forces, WestJet and Vancouver Island Health Authority, financial planning firms, cosmetic and health product retailers – to job placement services, skills training and personal development programs, were on hand to help people find new employment or make career changes. With an official unemployment figure of about seven per cent, organizers were surprised by the heavy turnout of people looking for jobs. “When we first opened up it was lined up down the block,” said Garth Yoneda, community relations manager with GT Hiring Solutions. “I’m quite convinced that our numbers are out of synch with what our employment stats say they should be.” The biggest age category was the age 25 to 40 range, with the over-50 crowd making up the second largest portion of job hunters. Organizers reported one couple even came from Vancouver, hopping on the 7 a.m. ferry to attend the fair. Target, WestJet and Vancouver Island Health Authority tables had the biggest lineups. “We’re the largest employer on Vancouver Island and we have just about every kind of job imaginable,” said Rod O’Connell, VIHA representative. VIHA employs not just medical personnel, but everyone from truck drivers and carpenters to librarians. “We’ve got about 900 different types of jobs and about 2,000 job descriptions,” O’Connell said. “Lots of variety for people to choose from and people know

that. We hire between 1,500 and 2,000 people a year.” Not all fair attendees were out of work. Many were looking for more stable employment, to change careers or were just trying to add variety to their existing jobs. Lyndea Williamson, 19, from Qualicum, was in a line of people waiting to talk to WestJet representatives. Williamson was training to get into broadcasting when she changed career directions and started teaching dance parttime. “I was too young when I started – thinking I knew what I wanted – and I took a step back,” Williamson said. “I’m kind of trying to be more open-minded to anything.” Williamson said she was impressed with the number of career options represented at the job fair, and has good interpersonal skills she wants to put to use. She likes working with people and employment with WestJet would be a good fit. She was interested in any position with the company, from receptionist to flight crew. “I’m really looking for something where I can learn and grow

individually and is positive,” she said. B.C. Corrections drew its share of interest from prospective employees. Christina Bootsma, a mental health liaison officer who works at Nanaimo Regional Correctional Centre, was with other corrections officers answering questions. She said the organization is currently only offering parttime regular correctional officer employment positions on the Lower Mainland, but the corrections branch has opportunities to move into a wide range of interesting jobs with good benefits. “I work one-on-one with inmates,” Bootsma said. “While they’re in jail we set up case plans and get everything set up so when they go out in the community they won’t come back. So we do their taxes to make sure they’re complete. We’ll get all their I.D. while they’re in custody. We’ll try to find housing for them. We’ll do up resumes, jobs, anything that’s going to help them so when they’re out there they don’t have to come right back. Housing is our biggest issue.” Troy Sampson, 40, a part-time

hardwood floor layer since 2004, was among those who stopped by the B.C. Corrections table, even though he hadn’t considered that kind of employment. Sampson was really looking to get into a line of work that would offer steadier employment. “Outdoors would be nice. I don’t mind outdoors once in a while,” Sampson said. “Indoors preferred. I like to be on my feet long hours sometimes, which is great depending on who you’re working with. I just want to see what’s out there.” Sampson said most available positions he encountered on his search are with fast food chains, but any construction jobs that come open are quickly snapped up. “You have to be the first 10 callers or five callers and maybe you’re hired,” he said. Sampson said positions with B.C. Corrections were interesting, but he did not want to risk moving away from the Nanaimo area for part-time work. “You could end up with a fourto six-hour shift and there’s your pay for the next week,” he said. photos@nanaimobulletin.com

Benefits will be blowing in on the breeze when kite boarders from the central Island sail from Nanaimo to Sechelt and back to raise donations for B.C. Children’s Hospital. The fundraising event, Kiting for Kids, will make its inaugural run across the Strait of Georgia from Pipers Lagoon Point to Davis Bay and back across the strait to Parksville in late April. Nanaimo’s Allen Berry said he and fellow kite boarders making the crossing – Ken Droog, of Parksville; Harold Grindl of Errington; Dennis McDonald of Qualicum Beach – will make the voyage sometime after April 23 when the whole team can come together and wind and weather conditions are right to make the crossing. “Until the actual date comes, it’s a little uncertain,” Berry

That’s ideal, but it will make it a little lumpy out there, especially for the people in the chase boat.” B.C. Children’s Hospital was chosen because of its high profile, making it something people readily recognize. It also offers an online promotion for the event and provides features that make it easy for people to contribute online. The kite boarders each have personal experience with the hospital on some level, said Berry. “I think every one of us that are involved either know people who have had or have family members that have used B.C. Children’s Hospital,” he said. The team set a fundraising goal at $10,000 and already raised about $6,500. Parent council hosts workshop

Nanaimo District Secondary School students Matthew Kemp, left, Andrew Stone, James Dean, Melissa AnnMarie Rogers and teacher Luc Begin spin on fitness trainers in the school’s foyer Thursday to raise cash for the Ride to Conquer Cancer. The annual ride from Vancouver to Seattle happens June 15-16. Team members spin for donations at Wal-Mart Saturday and Sunday (April 20-21).

The Nanaimo-Ladysmith District Parent Advisory Council partnered with the British Columbia Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils and the Nanaimo School District to host Special Education Parent Network Day – the second to be held in the province. The event on Saturday (April 20) offers parents, family members and friends of students with special needs with focused education, networking and support. They can meet and learn from others, and through this networking opportunity, continue to build relationships and share

what is happening within the district and around the province. The concept and need for this event arose from concerns that parents of students with special needs are often at a disadvantage. From district to district, available support and services vary and as one parent describes it, seeking information can be like “going on a treasure hunt without a clue.” Tickets are $20 and includes lunch, refreshments and workshop materials. Students hear talks on road safety Spring is not only a beautiful time to take to the open road, it can be deadly as well. On average, 220 youth are injured and one is killed in crashes during April, May and June every year on Vancouver Island. ICBC road safety speakers Mike Buckingham and Kevin Brooks will be visiting Vancouver Island schools in April and May to connect with high school students as they head into the grad and prom party season. Brooks, now in his 10th year as a road safety speaker, has appeared at more than 1,000 high schools across North America. As a teen, Brooks left a party, intoxicated and driving in excessive speeds. The ensuing crash, left him paralyzed and killed his childhood friend, Brendon. Buckingham is a retired Washington State Patrol

trooper and former prosecutor. Badly burned in an impaired driving crash, he’s been delivering his message to youth about the importance of traffic safety at schools across the U.S. and Canada for more than 25 years. “It’s important that we do what we can to help B.C. youth understand the devastating impact one wrong decision could have on their lives and their families,” said Mary Polak, minister of transportation and infrastructure. “The reality is that car crashes are the No. 1 preventable cause of death for youth in B.C. “ICBC’s road safety speakers help strengthen young people’s decision-making skills and teach them to think twice before taking risks behind the wheel.” For the past 16 years, ICBC

road safety speakers have been sharing their stories with more than 50,000 B.C. high school students every year. “Our road safety speaker program is one way that we reach out to students to motivate them to make smart, safe driving choices,” said John Dickinson, ICBC’s director of road safety. “Our road safety speakers connect with students through their personal, heartbreaking stories and help them realize the tragic and life-changing consequences of taking risks while driving.” Brooks will be speaking at: Wellington Secondary School, April 24 at 1 p.m.; John Barsby Secondary School, April 26 at 9:30 a.m.; and Cedar Secondary School, April 29 at 10:10 a.m. For more information, please go to http://icbc.com/ road-safety.

Aging docks in need of repair u From /1 Michelle Corfield, founder of Citizens to Save our Harbour Coalition, said she is excited to hear that the proposed privatization of Nanaimo Boat Basin, the visiting vessel pier and the other leases such as the floating restaurants will remain under the jurisdiction of the federal government through the Nanaimo Port Authority. As for the boat basin’s aging infrastructure, Corfield said the

port authority generates millions of dollars a year from the current activities within the harbour, and with some strategic direction, can revitalize the boat basin to meet the needs of all the stakeholders. Dumas said the port authority will continue to manage the Nanaimo marina. The Pacific Northwest Marina Group could not be reached for comment before press deadline. news@nanaimobulletin.com

AUXILIARY gives $245,000 in annual gift to NRGH.

Every year volunteers for the Nanaimo Auxiliary to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital give thousands of hours for the benefit of charity. Operating the gift shop in the hospital lobby and a thrift store at Northridge Centre, the group of more than 240 volunteers raises funds for specific equipment at NRGH. But it also provided a helping hand at the information desk, in several departments, and delivering comfort items such as books and magazines. All that hard work has once again paid off. At its recent

AGM, the auxiliary presented $245,000 to the Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation. For 113 years the auxiliary has created ways to provide necessary supplies, equipment, and services to patients and medical professionals. In the very early days, that may have meant providing food or sewing linens for patients. More than 20 years ago the auxiliary began directing its donation to the hospital foundation in an effort to concentrate funding toward essential projects. Since then, it has given $2.65 million to the foundation, reaching every area of NRGH and helping thousands of patients. This year the group’s $250,000 donation helps pur-

Sears unveils renovated Nanaimo store

part oF companywide refreshment of outlets. By Chris Bush The News BulleTiN

Staff, contractors and customers jammed the entrance to Nanaimo Sears for the official unveiling of the renovated store. The event, staged Friday at Nanaimo North Town Centre, included a ribbon cutting and personal address to store staff from Calvin McDonald, Sears Canada chief executive officer, who flew to Nanaimo from a Sears re-opening event in Grand Prairie, Alta., earlier in the morning. “What I’ve noticed, just in walking around, this is by far the best looking refresh store I’ve seen,” McDonald said to a cheering crowd of more than 160 employees. Sections of the store have been hidden behind white tarps since September as departments underwent renovations and re-merchandizing as part of the company’s three-year, Canada-wide refresh program to retool and refocus the company’s marketing on its traditionally successful products and services and bring in new products and programs to strengthen its position in the retail market. The Nanaimo store is the 11th renovated store in Canada to feature fresh colours, cleaner sight lines and incorporate new merchandising techniques, such as “power towers” and “event hubs” making their ways into Sears stores across Canada. Power towers and event hubs pull together groups of merchandise, such as home appliances, in set-

tings created under accent lighting to highlight the products’ visual appeal and show the lifestyle benefits of owning the products. The company, which enjoys strong sales in children’s wear, has brought in Carter’s and Oshkosh B’gosh babies and children’s clothing lines and has broadened its adult fashion section to include an extensive selection of men’s business suits. “With Sears, awareness is not our issue,” McDonald said. “Canadians are aware of Sears, but a big part

of our transformation is focusing on driving up that consideration – where we believe we can win, where we believe we are great is what the refresh store really tries to bring to life.” McDonald would not divulge how much money Sears Canada is investing in its stores. “We’re spending appropriately,” he said. “We’re changing the complete shopping experience. Our customers are coming in and fundamentally seeing the difference in the store and we’re doing such that

we can scale and do more stores. We have 118 fullline stores. We’re at 11 and we want to continue to do that. We’re taking a very pragmatic approach.” Staff have also participated in months of training programs to market new products and services and McDonald said the Nanaimo store has added a few staff members to its furniture, mattress and appliance departments and that he expected more staff will be added as sales numbers rise. Thomas Gemma, store manager, thanked staff for the months of hard work they contributed to the store’s transformation. “A big part of why we’re here today and the way we look is because of you, the associates in the Nanaimo store,” Gemma said. “You’ve made a huge difference and I’d really like to thank you for making this important moment possible for us.” Furniture and appliances are strong sellers for Sears locally. In fact, the Nanaimo store enjoys the second-highest appliance sales figures of all Sears stores across Canada. Sears has capitalized on that by expanding its appliance and furniture departments, including custom designed furniture as part of Sears’ Whole Home custom furniture program. “Custom designed by you, made in North America, infinite number of choices and available in 28 days,” McDonald said. “There’s a lot of unique offers here that differentiate us from a lot of competitors.” The ribbon-cutting event also included the presentation of a $10,000 cheque to the Boys and Girls Club of Nanaimo. photos@nanaimobulletin.com

Radiothon supports children’s charity Whether it’s saving lives, enhancing lives or enriching lives for children who have special needs, Variety – The Children’s Charity helps families all over B.C. breathe a little easier. Families in Nanaimo know the difference that Variety’s support made in their lives. To help the charity continue to help more families in the Nanaimo area, the DJs at The Wave 102.3 FM are turning their microphones on from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., May 15, and hosting the sixth annual Nanaimo Variety Children’s Radiothon. Last year the Radiothon raised more than $27,000 – all of which stayed in the Nanaimo area to help local families. Families like those of Scott Lewis, whose newborn son, Landon, was born premature with a defect in his heart. At barely five months old, Landon had surgery to correct the problem and his parents were by his side at the hospital in Vancouver. Variety also paid for our travel expenses. My wife is a day-care provider and I am a deejay – so our finances are tight. We had no idea how we were going to pay for all of this but Variety took away that worry and let us focus completely on Landon’s needs.” Landon recently celebrated his first birthday and is a healthy and happy little boy. The Lewis family was so grateful for Variety’s support they have vowed to give back wherever they can. Last year, Scott Lewis hosted a series of rock ‘n’ roll Christmas fundraiser nights for Variety throughout the month of December at the Palace Hotel in Nanaimo, and has plans to make this an annual event. Variety is fortunate to have many families and organizations across B.C. who host E4Vs (Events For Variety), and counts on the revenue from these fundraisers to help as many families as possible. Lights still on in one office

Politicians in B.C. have been busy campaigning for the May 14 election, even though the official election period did not begin until today (April 16). Meanwhile, in Victoria, at least one office hasn’t turned out the lights while waiting for voters’ decision. The office of the auditor-general, which until late May is under the auspices of outgoing auditor-general John Doyle, is working harder than ever to let B.C. residents know how well or poorly government agencies have been spending their tax dollars. In recent weeks, Doyle has issued reports on carbon credits, the process used to select SkyTrain for the Evergreen Line transit extension, governance of school districts, the air ambulance service and financial management within the legislature. His office has also done a follow-up report, looking at a number of past audits and seeing how various organizations are doing in meeting auditor-general recommendations. Doyle is doing so much right now because he wants to have outstanding matters cleared off his desk, as he returns to his native Australia to take a similar job. However, his look at so many areas of government spending is commendable, for it highlights an important part of governance that is frequently ignored by politicians, commentators and the public. Politicians promise new programs, and certain groups and individuals apply pressure for these programs. But when they are put in place, is the money used to run them spent wisely? We all pay a lot of taxes. Many of the programs which government runs are reasonably efficient, but others are not, and there is insufficient accountability in the spending of tax dollars. Thankfully, the auditor-general is still looking out for taxpayers. Whether anyone else is remains to be seen.

Intent to destroy Colliery dams remains B.C. citizens feeling neglected by parties

To the Editor,

Most citizens paying attention to the developments know the decision to destroy the Colliery Dam Park dams remains, despite attempts to appease the public by considering all options. Efforts to provide alternatives by the Save the Colliery Dams Society continue to fall on deaf ears. Cost effective alternatives were provided while still focusing on public safety, however, this would negate profit for those involved. As people directly affected by this decision to destroy a 100-year-old ecosystem within the city limits, we all remain hopeful that common sense will prevail, while feeling disheartened as the decision has already been made. Why does the reinforcement have to be stronger than any structure in the entire city? 1:10,000 is not even a number used in the U.S. How many dams in the province are built to this standard? Is the city annex building to up to this standard? What about the schools within the city? With the entire downtown built on mines how are they reinforced? We have a little piece of paradise in the south end, why destroy it? Council must be leaders in sustainability rather than representing corporate greed. The park represents social sustainability. City staff are saying it is better to take away peoples’ livelihood, fun, sanctuary, food source, research opportunities, fitness, health, relaxation, family time and recreation. Is this not what keeps a community

To the Editor,

or society healthy? Are they telling us we will be satisfied with our little, manicured park after all beavers, otters, eagles, osprey, owls, herons, fish and other creatures are all dead. Mother Nature is impossible to replicate. Without water, the dams will never be the same. Lastly, how much of the ecosystem will be destroyed downstream from the dams? Will the silt and sediment destroy salmon stocks in the various small streams as a result of the destruction? Everything has a ripple effect. The reasoning is poor business and only benefits those who profit. I am more than willing to pay more property tax to remediate the dams, however, I am not willing to pay to have them destroyed.

dams at Colliery Dam Park, the public has a right to know what was said in the in-camera meeting where the decision was made. While they are technically owned by Snuneymuxw First Nation under Canadian law, they were once controlled by a mining corporation that is now defunct. Is this Crown land, city property or privately owned? Another question is was there any sugges-

tion in the meeting the land could be considered for subdividing by developers? The Forest Practice Code forbids deforestation within 10 metres of a water course. Draining the lakes would provide developers a much larger land area to exploit and degrade. Engineers who had worked at dam repair gave presentations at the public meeting on this issue and agreed both dams could be upgraded for less than $2 million. The dam at Westwood Lake was upgraded for $500,000. So now the city has hired the same firm that told them removal will cost $6 million to answer our objections to their estimates. There’s so much that stinks about this deal that a court should be requested to untangle it before we end up with another paved park in the south end.

Re: Business owners lack confidence in politicians’ will, Guest Comment, April 9. Why is it difficult to sympathize with the reported 80 per cent of small business owners in the province who fear their concerns will not be addressed by either party elected in the upcoming election? Partly because individual citizens don’t feel represented either. We listen to talk of continued support for public services, upgraded infrastructure, renewed efforts to protect the environment, fair wages and shared tax contributions to help us all survive and thrive and we too consider it to be so much blather because we too doubt any serious commitment. The reported priorities of the small business community: balanced budgets and debt repayment, earning equality between the private and public sector, decreased business taxes, less regulation/red tape reveals a growing chasm between what business wants and the needs of the general population. While it may be true small business provides more than half the private sector jobs in the province, due to pressure for a “flexible work force” from this same sector many of these jobs are poorly paid, insecure and unsatisfactory. Continued downward pressure on wages means demand for goods continually shrinks. The golden goose called the consumer is being

cooked by the very sector that now complains of fewer customers. Instead, look at those countries whose economies and living standards always come out on top: Norway, Finland, Sweden, the ones who weathered the financial crisis better than Canada, where unions are strong enough to balance the interests of workers with those of business. Where taxes are relatively high so public services are strong and the country is not full of U-Store warehouses full of unnecessary consumer junk while individual lives become less satisfactory, and decide on the facts rather than ideology what is needed to produce a truly vibrant economy for business and individual citizens.

Greener alternative forces speed for oil To the Editor,

I keep hearing from our politicians how urgent it is, how we need, as quickly as possible, to get greater and greater amounts of tar sand oil shipped to foreign markets or … what? We will all be living in abject poverty? Will our economy suffer total collapse? Or is this urgency because the already obscenely wealthy oil companies and their government cohorts will not be able to cash in fully on this unsustainable resource before, God forbid, someone comes up with a greener alternative? I think it’s time we all just slowed down.

Mary Ann McDonald Gabriola Island

Errors in column fail to inform readers on carbon offset debate To the Editor,

Re: Trust springs a greenhouse gas leak, B.C. Views, April 4. The recent release of a report by the B.C. auditor general has led to a vigorous debate on the future of carbon neutral government. As a seller of carbon credits to the Pacific Carbon Trust, the Nature Conservancy of Canada looks forward to any clarity that may result in the B.C. carbon market. However, a recent Tom Fletcher column perpetuates factual errors that fail to inform any debate. Acquisition of a con-

servation project is the beginning of our work, not the end. When the conservancy purchased Darkwoods in 2008, our expensive, long-term commitment to the conservation lands began. From the outset, revenue from carbon sales was seen as critical to supporting this stewardship effort. Without the possibility of carbon sales the conservancy could not have undertaken a project of the size and scope of Darkwoods. Yet, those facts are conveniently overlooked by Fletcher. Further, he fails to

understand the baseline used to calculate stored carbon at Darkwoods. Independent evaluations were not based on the possibility of the conservancy clear-cutting the property, but rather on what would have happened had we not acquired Darkwoods. The alternative to our ownership was acquisition by a market-based buyer. The land would have been intensively logged and subdivided. The difference between that scenario and the current conserved property forms the basis for carbon valuation.

Fletcher asks, rhetorically, if NCC would have logged Darkwoods. “Legally, it could not,” he writes. On the contrary, NCC does log the Darkwoods site. We operate a small, sustainable harvest based on conservation values that supports the property and the community. In fact, overall our ownership of Darkwoods has resulted in a $13 million economic benefit to the community, to date. The Darkwoods Forest Carbon project was the first of its kind undertaken in Canada. The project is certified under

the Verified Carbon Standard; a standard that ensures a carbon project follows internationallyrecognized protocols and has tangible environmental benefits. The Nature Conservancy of Canada spent three years developing the project, and exercised due diligence at every step while working with various industry experts. The project also fulfilled all provincial regulations and met all standards for carbon offsets. More importantly, Darkwoods is a world-class conservation project.

Without revenue from forest carbon, the long-term protection of this vital 55,000-hectare property and the fate of animals and plants that find a haven there would be in jeopardy. The proceeds from the carbon sales went back into the long-term stewardship of Darkwoods – for the sake of nature and the people of British Columbia. Darkwoods ensures in perpetuity, British Columbians will see the magnificent forest for the trees.

Food drive springs into action While spring means time of renewal for many, it also means dwindling resources at food banks. British Columbia food banks assist an average of 96,100 individuals each month, 29.5 per cent of whom are children. From Friday (April 19) to May 9, Nanaimo’s Real Canadian Superstore on Metral Drive is holding its annual spring Extra Helping Food Drive.

Extra Helping donation bins will be in store and shoppers can purchase or bring nutritious, nonperishable food items to put in the bins. Shoppers can also make a cash donation during check-out. The most needed non-perishable food items include: pasta products, rice, canned meat and fish, dry and canned soups and stews, canned fruit and vegetables, infant formula and baby food.

Members of the Rotary Club of Nanaimo and staff at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital and Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation celebrate a $50,000 donation by the club to NRGH’s emergency department.

Rotary works hard for others For more than 90 years, the Rotary Club of Nanaimo has worked selflessly to provide for those in need. From its international Rotarian efforts to eradicate polio, to the local focus on the health and well-being of Nanaimoites, the club has embraced a challenge and taken the responsibility as their own.

It is with this spirit of service that club members delivered a donation of $50,000 to the Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation toward the purchase of equipment for the new emergency department at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. “The foundation is deeply grateful that the Rotary Club

of Nanaimo members share the belief that superior health care is possible for everyone,” said Jim Crist, foundation vice-chairman. Since the hospital foundation began its first capital campaign more than 20 years ago, the Rotary Club of Nanaimo has given more than $125,000 for equipment.

Bikers ride to remember fallen friends Motorcycle safety awareness and remembering those who have lost their lives in accidents is the focus of the Motorcycle Memorial Ride. Hosted by Sands Funeral Chapel, the ride takes place May 5 and includes a ride from Sands on Newcastle Ave-

nue to Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens and the dedication of a bench by B.C. Lt.-Gov. Judith Guichon. It’s a free, family-friendly event designed to bring awareness to motorcyclists on the roads in B.C. Registration begins at 11

Drama group celebrates 60 years BY RACHEL STERN

or 60 years actors from the Yellow Point Drama Group have been entertaining audiences in central Vancouver Island. The group originated as a club in 1953, formed by Anne Mossman. During the first season there were three one-act plays staged Waltz Time, Dear Departed and Which Way is the Way to Boston. These plays garnered best acting and best director award from various Vancouver Island drama festivals. The group is celebrating the 60th milestone with a special anniversary dinner show Saturday (April 20) at the Cedar Community Hall. The anniversary dinner show is modelled after Garrison Keillor’s popular radio show, A Prairie Home Companion. The drama group’s show looks back at the last 60 years of not only the group but also Cedar. “We have written light humorous sketches from the eras,” said Brian March, a producer with the group. “There is a casual, folksy, homespun feel to the entire show.” The evening will also include a house band and a partial reading of Dear Departed. It will have the live radio show feel with sound effects done onstage. March has been a member of the group for about 10 years. He said what made him passionate about staying with the group

BC Hydro stands to lose $1 billion over the next four years by selling surplus energy critic John Horgan power at a loss, NDP said yesterday. Horgan renewed the NDP’s long-standing criticism of the B.C. Liberal government’s push for electricity self-sufficiency, and its requirement that all new clean energy sources be privately developed Long-term purchase . contracts signed under that policy mean BC Hydro can expect to lose more than $1 billion by 2015, Horgan said at a news conferenc at the legislature. He e based his calculatio ns on documents BC Hydro released when it filed its application last week for an environmental assessmen t for the proposed Site C dam on the Peace River. The environmental impact shows an expected surplus statement for the dam of 5,200 gigawatt-hours for 2013 and similar surpluses out to 2015. Horgan said the current informati on suggests BC Hydro will have a surplus for the next 10 years. “We’re purchasing at $94 a megawatt-hour, and we can sell it for $37 a megawatt-hour (on the spot market),” Horgan said. “The net difference being $57 per megawatt -hour for power we do not need, power that BC Hydro was forced to purchase because of aggressiv e B.C. Liberal energy policy.” Energy Minister Rich Coleman said Horgan is using a “snapshot” of today’s low spot market and extending the same demand and prices far into the future. The province has numerous mine projects underway or seeking approval, and liquefied natural gas export proposals are proliferati ng in northern B.C. that are also likely to increase demand for electricity , he said.

level players, said Vandekamp, so guys could go 100 per cent. Kramer said the Clippers have to play that way. “The teams that we’re going to be playing [at Westerns], they’re going to be the champions of their league so we’ve got to come out hard and we’ve got to be playing up to playoff standard.” The Clippers will have some work to do to reach that standard. They can’t totally rewrite the game plan at this point, but they can try to demand better. “It’s kind of hard to transform your approach this far into the season,” Kramer said. “So we’ve just got to sharpen up and cut down on the mistakes.” At the same time, they need to do something different, or better, to make sure that their second playoff run goes differently than their first. “What we’ve tried to do at the camp is think a little bit outside the box when it comes to putting guys in different lines and different positions and roles…” Vandekamp said. “We have to look at that with an open mind.” GAME ON … The Clippers begin play at the Western Canada Cup on April 27 when they face Saskatchewan’s Yorkton Terriers at 7 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena.

Guys appear to be well-rested, the energy levels are high and the pace has been real good.” Kyle Kramer, an alternate captain on the Clippers, said the playoff run obviously

didn’t go the way the guys wanted, but they tried to make the best of the situation. “We got some time off to get some rest and we’re full of energy coming back,” he said.

The Nanaimo Clippers couldn’t really replicate playoff hockey, so they did the next best thing. The city’s B.C. Hockey League club resumed skating this past weekend with a three-day training camp utilizing three different mid-Island ice rinks. With practices and scrimmages every day, it was a ton of ice time meant to “shock the system” and get guys back into hockey mode, said Mike Vandekamp, the team’s coach. The Clippers were eliminated from the first-round of the BCHL playoffs back on March 20, but the season didn’t end, as Nanaimo gets a host berth in the Western Canada Cup tournament starting next week. With lots more to play for, the Clippers stepped back on the ice this past weekend with plenty of enthusiasm. “I’ve seen a lot of that,” Vandekamp said. “Guys are clearly excited to be back on the ice. From that standpoint [the camp] served its purpose.

The junior Timbermen get their first chance to take the floor as a team. Nanaimo’s B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League team faces off against the Victoria Shamrocks on Wednesday (April 17) in a pre-season game in Chemainus. The Timbermen opened camp 10 days ago and are looking forward to the change of pace that comes with live competition. “You can do drills and drills all training camp long, but guys don’t really stand out till it’s game action,” said Brad Dougan, the team’s coach. “it’s totally different than practising and that’s when you find out who can play.” The junior A Timbermen have a second pre-season game Saturday in Nanaimo against the senior B T-men. Dougan said he might sit certain guys in that one to try to take a longer look at some other players. But for Wednesday’s tilt, he’ll play his best guys and try to go for the win. “That’s a big Island pride

HUB CITY ball team splits road trip.

BY GREG SAKAKI ThE NEwS BULLETIN

An unlikely comeback win highlighted a so-so road trip for the Nanaimo Pirates. The Hub City Paving Pirates split doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday against the Vancouver Cannons and North Shore Twins, respectively. Nanaimo won 7-6 and then lost 8-0 at New Westminster, then won 4-3 and lost 13-3 at North Vancouver. The first game was remarkable in that the Pirates were losing 6-0 going into the final inning and batted around to take the lead. “That was one that we stole…” said Doug Rogers, Pirates manager. “We were dead to rights. The stake was in already, we were ready for the second game.” But the Cannons’ s t a r t e r, h a v i n g reached his pitch count, made way for a reliever who was battered so badly by the Pirates that his earned-run average this season is now 105.11. Brady Rogers singled and doubled in the win and Braeden Mousseau had a hit, two walks and two runs batted in. Tanner Linn earned the win on the mound, allowing no earned runs in two relief innings. The Pirates didn’t carry any momentum from the comeback

win into the second half of the doubleheader, though, said the manager. “We came out pretty flat and got pounded by a team that was pretty hungry,” he said. In that one, Devon G e a r y, w h o h a d earned a save in the first game, remained on the mound and suffered the loss, giving up four earned runs over five innings. The next day was similar. Alex Rogers threw a completegame victory in the first game against the Twins, striking out nine, with offence coming from Bryan Borrelli who hit two doubles. In the second game the Pirates were mercied in six innings with the Twins’ lineup amassing 20 hits. T.J. Mah took the loss, giving up three earned runs in 2 1/3 innings. Lee Martin was the offensive leader for Nanaimo in the game, hitting a single and a double and scoring two runs. Though the weekend had its ups as well as its downs, Rogers and the other coaches will focus on the things that went wrong on the road trip. “When you talk about consistency, you’ve got to look at the negatives and try to improve those things,” he said. GAME ON … The Pirates are back on the road this coming weekend, visiting the Victoria Eagles on Saturday (April 20) then the White Rock Tritons on Sunday. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Baseball institute Mariners go winless on trip to desert Vancouver Island Baseball Institute got to extra innings, but couldn’t get any closer. Nanaimo’s VIBI Mariners went winless on a road trip to Kamloops this past weekend. The team fell 6-5 to the Okanagan Coyotes in extra innings to start Saturday’s action, then lost 8-7 to the Thompson Riv-

ers University WolfPack in that day’s late game. VIBI lost 6-4 to TRU on Sunday and then lost the weekend finale 12-2 to Okie. In the first game, Darren Kolk led the Mariners at the plate, going 3-for-4, and Cody Andreychuk had a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Luke Hawkins was the losing pitcher,
