Bombs felt far from Boston Five local runners registered to run in marathon by Ne i l Cor be tt staff reporter

Four runners from Maple Ridge and one from Pitt Meadows were taking part in the Boston Marathon which was rocked by a pair of explosions Monday. Coverage from New England reports three were killed and approximately 176 injured, some critically, by the bombs. The loved ones of five local runners waited anxiously for word that they were safe. It was difficult to get information about the runners out of Boston, but five hours after the first blast, the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that no Canadians were injured. Of the 27,000 people who ran the iconic race, about 2,000 were Canadians.

B.C. candidates out of gates Writ drops for May 14 provincial election by P h i l M e l nychuk staff reporter

Dr. Doug Bing is the B.C. Liberal candidate for Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows.
After weeks of advance work by the contenders, B.C.’s election began for real Tuesday as candidates blasted out of the starting blocks to win the May 14 vote. “Napoleon once said that an army marches on its stomach but an election campaign runs on its

donations,” Liberal candidate for Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Doug Bing said Monday. The type of campaign he runs will depend on what dollars flow in, although there is an Elections B.C. spending limit of $73,218 for each candidate. The Pitt Meadows councillor is continuing to knock on doors, attend meetings and talk to groups to convince them to re-elect the B.C. Liberals while his supporters got signs all ready on the weekend. “I think we’re ready to roll.” “The main message is the econ-

omy. We know we’ve got a world with fiscal uncertainty and we think the Liberals are the party to keep the economy growing. “We want to create jobs and make sure we have a secure future and we don’t think the NDP know how to do that.” He said the NDP government ran consecutive deficits in the 1990s and B.C.’s credit rating was downgraded six times, while three credit agencies are saying that under the Liberals, the recent budget is balanced. “Who are you going to believe,
the NDP or these independent bond-rating agencies?” The concerns are similar for the people he encounters door knocking and on the campaign trail. “The main issue I find is taxes.” Bing say he tries to emphasize that the government is controlling its spending by balancing its budget and says the NDP would fall back to its tax-and-spend habits. “That seems to resonate with a lot of people when I bring that topic up.” See Election, p3

School librarians hit hardest by budget cuts Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school district forced to slash $5.6 m by Neil Corbet t staff reporter
Contributed
Maple Ridge Teachers Association members protested education funding Tuesday as the election officially got underway.
School libraries won’t remain the resources to students that they are now, if the Ridge Meadows School Board goes ahead with its proposed 2013-2014 budget. That’s the opinion of Halia Hirniak, the district helping teacher-librarian, who notes secondary libraries have been hard hit by a budget that saw the board forced to cut $5.6 million. She notes the secondary teacher-librarians in School District 42 are facing possible reduction in their positions by 50 per cent. That means that each secondary school will have only one half time Teacher-Librarian staffing their library. “As a group, we are both dismayed and disappointed at this proposal, and we hope to present at the School Board Public meeting this Wednesday evening (tonight),” she said. She said six of the positions will be cut to half time. Teacher-librarians are all certified educators, and she expects they will make up the loss of income by taking on more classroom hours. She said most of the people effected have ten ore more years of service. The issue is the loss of the resource. “It’s a major reduction in service to the students.” She said the teacher librarians specialize in online research and using technology to gain information. “Kids are really good
at technology – knowing what buttons to push, but they’re not so good with information – knowing what to do with it.” She said they also work to boost literacy. “We’re great book pushers. We’re there because we’re passionate about reading.” She said each high school used to have two full-time teacher-librarians, and now they will be down to one half-time position. “Everybody’s dismayed.” More than 80 Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows teachers took to two busy local intersections on Tuesday morning, the first day of the provincial election campaign, to protest the current government’s funding of education. “Teachers wanted to remind commuters that under the Liberal government, public education has suffered. “It’s time to end the decade of cuts,” MRTA president George Serra said. Teachers at the corners of Lougheed Highway and 222nd Avenue, and also at Harris Road and Lougheed Highway in Pitt Meadows, held signs calling on the next government to re-invest in public education. “The school district’s preliminary budget for 2013/14 proposes to slash $5.6 million – cutting teaching, support, custodial and maintenance positions, as well as a host of other district services,” said Serra. “The fact that School District 42 wants to reduce, by half, the number of secondary teacher librarians flies in the face of both district and Ministry statements that lifelong learning and literacy is tantamount to education. “We need a new government that has sound ideas and a willingness to restore public education.”
Liberals, new Democrats argue about economic records Election from Front
He called the NDP proposal to expand the carbon tax on the natural gas industry a “job-killing tax,” and said raising taxes does affect business decisions. In the riding next door though, on the east side of 224th Street, NDP candidate Mike Bocking has a ready response. “Complete fiction” he says of the Liberal charges of NDP money mismanagement. Under the NDP in the 1990s and the Liberals in the first decade of the 2000s, B.C.’s economic growth were similar. “When you average it all out the 1990s and the first 10 years of the 21st Century have been almost identical in terms of growth.” And net population migration into B.C. in the 1990s was double what it was in 2000, he added. Since becoming premier, Christy Clark has run three straight deficits, including a $790-million deficit this year, said an NDP release. It pointed out B.C.’s total

tive MP Randy Kamp. Last election, the nominating process was delayed because of the federal election. This time around, “we’re much more prepared. “We really get a sense that time has run out on the Liberals,” adding the Liberals’ attack advertising is turning people
off politics. “I think we need more positive politics and that’s what the NDP is trying to do.” The Liberals announced their policy platform Monday, one that included a referendum in 2014 to decide whether TransLink gets any more taxes or can implement any more tolls. Bocking though said it’s difficult to reduce complicated issues to a yes or no referendum question. And New Democrat candidate in Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Elizabeth Rosenau said the government has to decide if it wants transit to be a public service that’s needed for all those who cannot drive. “Referendums don’t tend to go well when you’re talking about raising taxes.” She added that if it’s decided that transit is a public service, it will take leadership to decide how to pay for it, while the government subsidizes motor vehicle traffic “a great deal.”

If developed, land could account for 53% of city revenue by 2027 by Phil Mel nyc hu k staff reporter
Pitt Meadows is coupling an update of its long-term growth plan with a renewed plea for more industrial space in south Pitt Meadows and in the North Lougheed commercial area, saying it’s needed to give homeowners a break from taxes. The study by G.P. Rollo and Associates says that if land near the proposed North Lougheed connector and the former Cardiff Farms in south Pitt Meadows is developed, commercial and industrial taxes will produce 53 per cent of the city’s revenue by 2027. The report doesn’t give a comparative percentage for that year, but notes that by 2032, without such development, commercial and industrial tax revenue will provide only 39 per cent of the city’s revenue. “We’ve heard from residents that they want tax relief,” said Mayor Deb Walters Monday. “The only way we can get tax relief is if you have an increase in commercial and industrial development.” Council ordered the report last year to update its regional context statement, which explains how Pitt Meadows’ plan fits with Metro Vancouver’s new regional growth strategy, which aims to guide growth as the region adds 1.2 million people by 2040. Every city has to update its plan by August. Walters said Pitt Meadows already identifies the two areas for industrial use in its current regional context statement, but the report will “highlight the importance of these two parcels. “I think it will help tremendously.” Pitt Meadows has already sent an application to the Agricultural Land Commission to allow it to remove 33 hectares of land from the agricultural reserve that would pave the way for developing 50 ha near the North Lougheed Connector, proposed to run from Golden Ears Way to Harris Road. The land commission is expected to decide on that next application month.
City of Pitt Meadows
The City of Pitt Meadows has already submitted an application to exclude land in the North Lougheed corridoor from the protected agricultural land reserve.
Colleen Flanagan/The news
The former Cardiff farm site is located on Harris Road at Airport Way. Walters said Monday she didn’t know if council would send the report to the land commission although she thinks it’s a good idea. “It might have some sort of impact on their decision.” A staff summary of the report says Metro Vancouver’s employment projections for the area also need updating. If both the Cardiff Farms and the North Lougheed c o m m e r c i a l Bell areas are developed, Pitt Meadows’ employment base could jump by more than 130 per cent over the next two decades. Metro Vancouver forecasts only a 52-per-cent increase in employment in that time. Walters said the city wants to takes its time developing both areas, if either are allowed for development. “We only have so much land to develop. We know that putting in residential costs us more.” Although the city is awaiting approval on land exclusion, the commission already gave permission for the North Lougheed Connector in
2010. The 3.6-kilometre road would cut through farmland, from Harris Road to Golden Ears Way. The city maintains the connector is a way to take traffic off Old Dewdney Trunk Road. But the road is essential for developing the commercial strip planned for the north side of Lougheed Highway and would be paid for by the developers. Walters said the connector will have two purposes, taking commuter traffic off Old Dewdney Trunk road, thus making it easier for farmers to access their properties in north Pitt Meadows with vehicles and equipment, while also providing access for the mixed commercial/industrial development favoured by most on council. Walters said the agricultural advisory committee approached council about the road. Farmers in north Pitt Meadows are “hiring flag people to get their farm vehicles out. They’re travelling late at night. They were really asking for our help. “If we’re going to continue to protect our
farms, then we have to assist our farmers by taking some of the traffic off the roads.” She compared the North Lougheed with the Mary Hill Bypass, built for through traffic and saying that it will serve mainly Maple Ridge commuters. “It will be our neighbours to the east that will be using that road.” Walters said that covenants suggested by the ALC on properties restricting the nonfarm use of land on the north side of the road will stop further development. But in late 2011, Pitt Meadows wrote to the commission asking that those be reviewed saying they are “redundant and likely unenforceable.” The ALC however considers that the covenants would be valid. Coun. Bruce Bell said the growth in employment is good news but added Pitt Meadows should be in no hurry to allow any kind of development. He opposes shopping centres on the north side of Lougheed Highway and wants something, such as an educational institute that will provide higher paying jobs for residents. “We can be selective. We can do it right.”

Gang associate convicted in Pitt bar room brawl Aaron Kydd bit another man’s ear during fight by M o ni s ha M a r tin s staff reporter
A man who bit another man during a brawl at a Pitt Meadows country bar has been convicted of aggravated assault. B.C. Supreme Court Justice James Williams rejected Aaron Michael Kydd’s claim of selfdefense, finding him guilty of starting a fight that got him thrown out of Rooster’s Country Cabaret in December 2011. “I do not accept Mr. Kydd’s description of what occurred,” said Justice Williams. “I am satisfied Mr. Kydd made an aggressive move towards the complainant.” The court heard that the fight was sparked after Kydd took a beer from a table where Daniel Goodman-Bell and three of his friends were sitting. Kydd believed the beer belonged to him and was surprised when a Goodman-Bell walked up to him and snatched the beer out of his hand. Goodman-Bell testified that Kydd later approached him and began to stare at him. When Goodman-Bell asked Kydd what was wrong, he was punched. Goodman-Bell told the court Kydd hit him several times, delivering blows to the back of his head and his face. He was also bitten on his ear and neck. Kydd however claimed he acted in self-defense. He told the court he was at Rooster’s for a work Christmas party
and claimed he only approached GoodmanBell to clear the air and find out what was wrong. Kydd said GoodmanBell made a “gun gesture” under the table before the fight began. Kydd claimed he too was tackled by someone and was only trying to escape when he bit Goodman-Bell on the neck. Kydd insisted he did not tear a piece of flesh from GoodmanBell’s ear. Bouncers eventually broke up the fight and called police. Justice Williams rejected Kydd’s version of events and questioned why he would “extend a hand of peace” if he believed that GoodmanBell stole his beer. “I conclude there was no one on his back as he described and there was nothing to stop him from withdrawing or getting off the complainant,” said Justice Williams. Kydd, 30, held his head in his hands and doubled over as Justice Williams delivered his verdict. Kydd was on parole at the time of the assault. He was among five members of the Independent Soldiers, who were arrested for drug trafficking in Kamloops in 2009. Kydd pleaded guilty to the charge and received a 30 month prison sentence. He also has previous convictions for possessing a firearm, having control of a vehicle while impaired and several driving infractions. Kydd is scheduled to return to New Westminster Supreme Court for a pre-sentence report in July.

THE NEWS/opinion News Views
The choice is ours
With less than one month to go to the provincial election, all the players of the drama are in place. Some – like the BC Conservatives – have been rehearsing their lines loudly and longly. Others – like the Green Party and even the NDP – are just starting to make their presence felt on the stage. And then there are the BC Liberals, who seem to have been in a situation of almost permanent campaigning since Gordon Campbell stepped down as leader some two and a half years ago. What is now needed to complete the show is the presence – and the voice – of the people. And what we should remember at this point – all smoke and mirrors, scriptwriters and noisy claques to one side – is that this is far more than theatre. We, the electorate, are not simply an audience. We are employers, and the politicians – no matter their party affiliations or ideological alignment – are the applicants hopeful of being hired as our representatives. Their pay will come out of our pockets, and their decisions will have a very real impact on the course of our lives for the next four years. Like any employer, we have the right to ask questions of potential employees, and make note of straightforward answers, as well as evasions and attempts to obscure the truth. And, as with any employment decision, a number of factors must be weighed. Does the candidate seem experienced enough for the job? Do his or her goals seem realistic enough? Has the candidate demonstrated capability or incompetence during past terms of employment? Has this person proven trustworthy? Can we afford to hire an individual on the basis of who that person knows, or what views he or she espouses around the water cooler, or should we choose our employees more on the basis of how he or she has performed in the past? Our participation in the election, particularly when ballots are cast, is vital to the process. This is more than a matter of the usual lecture about civic responsibility, low voter turnout and the importance of stepping up and being counted. As employers, if we feel our previous hires have not been equal to the job, we must – if only out of self-interest – choose replacements that seem best to suit our needs. But if, by the same token, we feel our wishes and aspirations have been properly represented over the past four years, we must, in all fairness, give a vote of confidence to our current employees. The choice is ours. - Black Press

Don’t count B.C. Conservatives out VICTORIA – As the B.C. NDP launched its election campaign last week with a package of income tax hikes, higher than those in the B.C. Liberals’ election budget of February, a third party leader confirmed his own plan to increase B.C. Views personal and business Tom Fletcher income tax rates. It’s not readily apparent from his recently released “fiscal framework” document, but B.C. Conservative leader John Cummins told me his plan to phase out B.C.’s carbon tax does indeed include raising income tax rates that were lowered to make the carbon tax “revenue neutral.” I reached Cummins in Prince George, where he was continuing his aggressive courtship of northern B.C. with an announcement that federal gas tax revenues would be redirected to a new fund for locally determined road improvements. Earlier he vowed to study the deplorable state of northern ambulance service. Cummins has more good news for the north: that’s where a regionally phased elimination of the carbon tax would begin. It’s also the area of thinnest population, meaning the impact on the B.C. treasury would be less. This is, after all, a tax budgeted to bring in $1.2 billion in the current year. The B.C. Conservatives continually remind people that the carbon tax falls disproportionately on rural, remote and particularly northern folks who face
long distances, long winters, and public transit options ranging from slim to none. This has ceased to be much of an issue for the urban B.C. majority, who are focused on bridge tolls, ferry fares and the like. The B.C. Conservatives decry the population decline of rural B.C., with international immigration almost exclusively going to big cities, while temporary foreign workers increasingly fill agricultural and industrial jobs in the Interior. The party’s still-evolving platform echoes the NDP’s call for more skills training and increased completion rates for trade apprentices.
“As a long-time former Reform and Conservative MP, Cummins is acutely aware that the urban media will leap with extra vigour on any perceived gaffe of the right wing.” Cummins is in favour of the proposed Northern Gateway oil pipeline and the massive buildup of infrastructure needed to add liquefied natural gas to B.C.’s energy export mix. He sees that enormous industrial expansion as the path to shift population growth beyond the south of the province. Cummins is surprisingly cool to one industrial project, the proposed Site C dam on the Peace River, calling himself
undecided. He also sounds skeptical about the B.C. Liberal plan to extend B.C.’s electricity grid and use that to develop further independent power. This sounds to me like political positioning rather than economic analysis. An anti-Site C independent candidate has significant support in Peace River North, creating a three-way struggle for a key B.C. Conservative target. The B.C. Conservative platform also totals up the billions in long-term electricity contracts with private power producers and suggests the price for this clean energy has been set too high. This is another echo of the NDP’s vague position. So if the B.C. Conservatives are gungho on oil and gas and think the carbon tax is a mistake, do they think there should be any effort to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions? Cummins sidestepped that question, preferring to talk about conventional air pollution, whether it’s in the Fraser Valley or as a byproduct of a northern industrial boom. As a long-time former Reform and Conservative MP, Cummins is acutely aware that the urban media will leap with extra vigour on any perceived gaffe of the right wing. Should a Conservative let slip that he’s skeptical about global warming, or worse, express a rustic view on social issues, all Hell would break loose. The B.C. Conservatives have started with the most detailed, costed platform of any party. Don’t count them out. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com

The News/letters Invest in schools to buy our votes
Editor, The News: Re: News Views, Buying Our Votes (The News, April 10). It’s too bad that the Liberals aren’t trying to buy our votes by investing in our schools. Instead, after a decade of cuts to education, our trustees are contemplating further serious declines in educational opportunities for our children; for example the elimination of full-time librarians from our secondary schools. Libraries could continue to be key to our children’s success at school and beyond but first, we need a change of government. It is time to turf Mark Dalton and the rest of Christy Clark’s Liberals from office and to restore full funding to public education. Our kids deserve it. Philip Gray Maple Ridge
Grant’s Law not gutted: Mac’s Editor, The News: Re: Protests against “gutted” Grant’s Law (The News, April 12). I am writing to correct misinformation that appeared in your article of April 12, which makes several false claims about Grant’s Law and Macs Convenience Stores’ response to it. Grant’s law is a WorkSafeBC regulation that was named in honour of Grant DePatie, a young gas station attendant killed on the job when he left the building during a drive-off theft. Grant’s Law requires mandatory prepayment of fuel in B.C., eliminating the possibility of drive-off thefts and associated risks to employees. This requirement has overwhelming support in B.C., both from Macs and from the rest of the convenience and gas retail industry. As the DePatie incident happened during late night hours, WorkSafeBC added another requirement that included measures extending to all late night retail employers, including convenience stores with or without attached gas
stations. Stores choosing to stay open late were required to either have two workers during late night hours or to physically separate a lone worker from the public with a barrier. To many it may seem intuitively that this is the right thing to do. It is not. Using a barrier or having two employees present would not have prevented the horrifying death of Grant DePatie. And inside a retail store, these measures will actually increase the risk of harm in situations involving robbery and potential violence, not only to employees but also to customers. Between 2008 and 2011, the retail industry and WorkSafeBC developed and installed various barrier designs inside Macs convenience stores to assess their impact. The evaluation, performed by Deloitte Canada, confirmed that barriers would focus aggression at store property or the employee(s). The finding was consistent with what security experts tell us – that the installation of
barriers separating employees from the public runs contrary to the principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), and could result in more criminal acts than they were intended to reduce. Store designs that tell visitors they are dangerous do not elicit friendly behaviour, and they increase the likelihood that unfriendly visitors will show aggression. The argument for requiring two staff is that employees working alone are “sitting ducks” to violent attacks. However, as pointed out by Dr. Rosemary Erickson in her study Two Clerks, if someone enters a store with the willingness or intent to inflict harm, having two workers present only doubles the risk. The secret to personal security is to eliminate the intent to cause harm. In retail environments, this is managed by adopting measures that Macs and many other convenience stores already have in place. In December 2011, WorkSafeBC included these measures in its late night retail regulation. All late night retailers
are now required to install a barrier, employ two staff and/ or establish a comprehensive violence prevention program. The 2008 late night retail regulation lacked any requirement to implement proven measures such as these. The late night retail regulation is an improved package of measures that protects staff both day and night, not just after 11 p.m. Mac’s Convenience Stores makes the safety of employees and the public paramount. Our company has an excellent safety record because of the practices the industry has developed over the past two decades. We will continue to implement any and all practices that contribute to the safety of employees and the public and to support the industry as a whole in achieving the same standards by freely sharing our best practices.

If these people had lived up to the term “trustees”, this would not have happened. Fake tears and continued tenure with no consequences for these “untrustees” will guarantee that this sort of thing keeps happening. These “untrustees” are politicians, and they are as insincere as politicians can be - the blame for this lies squarely on their shoulders, tears or not.

Pitt teen hosts Show of Styles for Kids with Smiles Fundraiser for B.C. Children’s Hospital by Nei l Corbe tt staff reporter
B.C. Children’s Hospital has been life changing for Carissa Dean. She suffered a hairline fracture in her spine after a bad fall while playing Grade 9 basketball at Pitt Meadows secondary. In diagnosing the cause of her pain, doctors also found that her spine had irregular curves at both the top and bottom. As she aged, it started causing her problems. Dean was a model from the age of 10, but health problems have held her back. She was expected to grow to 5’9”, but she stopped growing at 5’5”, then actually started to shrink. The scoliosis caused her a lot of pain, as her curved spine pinched nerves. “I would practise [basketball] one day, and then be done for the next three.” Some children who are diagnosed with scoliosis are able to correct the problem with a brace, but Dean was past the growth stage where that would be a viable treatment. Other skeletal problems emerged. “My hips were out of whack. It got pretty severe for a while,” said the Pitt Meadows resident. Her hips and back would pop out of joint. In hospital, she met someone else with sco-
liosis who had been successfully treated with surgery. She met a second girl who had surgery, and became paralyzed because of a resulting infection. “So, for me, it was not an option.” Children’s Hospital offered her both treatment, and inspiration. “It’s an eye-opening experience,” she said. “I realized how little my [health problem] was in comparison to how sick some of these kids are.” Dean, now 19, tried yoga, and so far it has been the best solution. “It’s been helping a ton,” she said. “That’s my new passion – I go five days a week.” It is possible to reverse scoliosis, and that’s her goal. If not, Dean is thankful for what she has. “I’ve got it better than some. I can do most things – it’s just pain management.” Show of Styles, Kids with Smiles was both a fashion show and a way for her to give back to the hospital. The Children’s Hospital patients are her models, and they love it. “I get them all glammed up for the day.” The first show was in April 2011. “It was the most amazing experience I’ve had. The kids – their personalities are amazing. They have nothing to lose. “They get this superstar attitude. By the third outfit they’re walking like they own the runway.” She remembers a shy three-year-old whose dad held his hand for

the first two trips down the catwalk, but on the third trip he insisted on going himself – like the big kids. “I want to support their recovery and build them up.” As she became more familiar with the work being done at Children’s, by the staff and the many volunteers, she learned about everything that is still needed, from equipment to children’s toys, and remembers thinking “this hospital should be stacked with stuff for these kids.” And so she helps in her own, unique way. She took a year off last year to focus on school,
but after completing her first year studying communications at Simon Fraser University, she is bringing it back on May 11 at the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown. In the first event, she had a goal of raising $5,000 and overshot by bringing in $7,000. Her goal for the second event is $7,500. Cherie Spence works for the hospital with independent community fundraisers, from
bake sales to gala dinner/dance events. She said the events raise $700,000 per year for the hospital. “So it’s pretty significant for us, and we do rely on people in the community raising funds for us.” She said the first Show of Styles, Kids with Smiles is a great event, and the hospital appreciates the effort that Dean puts into planning the logistics.

They heard that there had been a bomb, and people had been hurt, and decided to get out of the city. They texted his sister in law, to let people back home know they were safe. “The fortunate thing was that there were a lot of EMS people there,” he said, noting there are always ambulances on hand to deal with the medical emergencies runners may encounter. It was the first Boston Marathon for Di Tomaso. “It was otherwise and amazing day, so I have a lot of mixed feelings.” He won’t let it stop him from returning, or attending other high profile sporting events. “I would go. According to Boston police, the blasts took place approximately two hours after the winners crossed the finish line, at 2:50 p.m. Boston time. The near-simultaneous blasts struck about 90 metres apart, knocking some spectators off their feet. Paramedics rushed to treat the injured; some bloody, others reportedly missing limbs. Maple Ridge’s Sandra Speth watched the coverage on CNN and waited for a phone call. Her 50-year-old husband Martin was at his first trip to one of the world’s most popular races. The news agency advised family members not to bother trying to call through, as cell service was interrruped. She said about half of the runners had finished when the bombs went off. “I’m just hoping that he was slow,” she said on Monday night, hours after the bombs went off. More than five hours after the blasts, and after numerous texts by family members, there had been no response from her husband. “I’m just ill.” Three other local runners in the Boston Marathon from Maple Ridge were Scott Shupe, 48, Mindy Olson, 42, and Diana Jones, 38. Pitt Meadows resident Steve Di Tomaso was able to get a text out to family. The owner of Envision Fitness had finished the marathon about an hour before the blasts, and was about two and a half blocks away, in a Starbucks. He and his wife heard the blasts, but did not think of a terrorist bomb. Then they saw the police and ambulance response, and runners climbing barricades to try and get out

Silver Valley residents in Maple Ridge will have to take the long way home for six months but it will be worth it in the long run to have a new 232nd Street bridge over the North Alouette River. Construction is set to start in June and be complete by the new year, according to information at an open house at municipal hall Thursday. While the project requires a complete shut down of 232nd Street, just north of 132nd Avenue, a temporary pedestrian bridge will allow walkers and cyclists to cross and make their way up to the new subdivision at the north end of the street. Once work starts however, motorists will have to use 224th Street and drive north up to 136th Avenue and turn right to get into the subdivision. Maple Ridge has bud-

geted $4.6 million for the project, although it’s still waiting on project bids for the final cost. “The existing bridge is at the end of its service so it’s time to have it replaced,” said municipal engineer Dave Pollock. Bill Archibald with the Haney Horsemen wanted to know if the new bridge will be
higher than the existing wooden bridge. He was told the new bridge will be higher, while the river channel will be one or two metres wider than it currently is. Both steps would minimize debris and log jams during high water periods. Unlike the new 232nd Street bridge over the South Alouette River which has a four-lane foundation, but is still only two lanes, the North Alouette bridge will be built on a twolane foundation that

will be capable of expanding to four lanes at a later date. Property infringement and a hydro line made it easier to keep the bridge at a two-lane design for the time being. The bridge also will have a three-metre sidewalk on one side for people, bicycles and horses and a two-metre sidewalk on the other. The total span of the bridge will be about 35 metres, with no piers in the water, minimizing any impact on fish.

The B.C. Liberal Party released its election platform Monday, promising to freeze personal income tax rates for five years and return to its plan to eliminate small business income tax. Premier Christy Clark released the platform at a campaign event in Vancouver, challenging NDP leader Adrian Dix to do the same and to participate in a one-on-one debate on the different visions for the province. The B.C. Liberals’ personal tax freeze does not extend to income above $150,000, which was subject to a 2.1 per cent increase in the government’s February budget. That increase was budgeted to last only two years before returning to the current 14.7 per cent rate. The NDP has pro-
Christy Clark is seeking re-election on May 14. posed to raise the rate on income above $150,000 a year to 19 per cent, permanently. The B.C. Liberals had earlier planned to eliminate income tax for small businesses with annual revenues of $500,000 or less. But faced with deficits after the 2008-09 financial crisis and the rejection of the harmonized sales tax, the government decided in 2012 to hold the small business tax rate at 2.5

per cent until the province’s financial picture improved. The party’s new plan is more modest, trimming the small business rate by half a point in 2015 and another half point by 2017. The B.C. Liberal platform leans heavily on long-term debt repayment for government, BC Ferries and BC Hydro using liquefied natural gas export revenues. Clark said a conservative
scenario of two large LNG export facilities and three smaller ones could provide enough revenue to pay off the province’s debt in 15 years. “The NDP’s fiscal plan is a plan to kill liquefied natural gas,” Clark said. NDP MLA Carole James rejected that claim, saying the party has endorsed LNG exports. “LNG revenue is an opportunity, but it’s not going to solve all of our challenges,” James said. The NDP has decided on a staged release of policies, which started in Prince George Monday with promises for new investment in reforestation. Other highlights of the B.C. Liberal platform include: • $3 million a year to upgrade rest stops and visitor centres around B.C. • a B.C. film promotion office in Los Angeles • funds to develop an aerospace and defence contractor industry • a five-year freeze of the carbon tax, previously announced

During his years working at the Maple Ridge Gazette, Ernie Poignant volunteered with his entertaining chalk talks at BC Children’s Hospital, schools, hospitals and even jails. His outgoing personality and his boyish enthusiasm made him a favourite performer. In 1994, many of his cartoons were printed in a booklet called People, Pencil and Paper. He worked closely with the Matsqui Sumas Abbotsford Museum, turning stories from pioneer recollections into cartoons. One of these cartoons printed in his MSA Museum booklet Poignant Moments recalls the infamous 1948 flood that hit Abbotsford hard. Two people in a rowboat are rescuing a stranded cat from the top of a fence post. On its back is a live mouse, also saved from drowning. Another poignant moment recorded. When teens themselves get involved in a drug and alcohol forum, parents get a lot more out of it. That has been the experience of Dawn Taylor, the school-based prevention worker for Alouette Addictions Services, who is organizing an upcoming forum called Your Kids and Drugs. It is the fourth year she has run the event, which generally attracts about 75 parents. They learn about drug identification, trends
in narcotics, how to identify whether your child is using drugs or alcohol, and strategies to deal with that situation. It covers ecstasy, marijuana, acid, magic Taylor mushrooms, cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and “a whole battery of prescription drugs.” The adults can ask the teens virtually anything about the topic, with the proviso that no personal information is asked. “I have about 20 teens who take part, and they’re an amazing, amazing group,” said Taylor. “They (parents) love
the talks with the kids – that’s the best part of the night.” She said they are young people who have had various experiences with and even dependencies on drugs, and they are willing to talk frankly about things adults need to know. “These kids genuinely love helping the parents.” She said parents learn a few shocking facts, not least of which is how available drugs are for their children. “Drugs are so accessible to our teens, everywhere we go,” she said. “Pot is easier for them to get than alcohol.”
She said parents may also be shaken to learn that with the increasing potency of so-called B.C. Bud, teens report some frightening side effects. “More kids experience symptoms of psychosis, even from pot,” she said. Anxiety, paranoia and feelings of insecurity are the most common side effects reported, but some also have had auditory hallucinations.
Forum • The forum will be held on Tuesday, April 23, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Pitt Meadows Secondary. Guests will be parents only, and must RSVP by Monday, April 22. Pizza will be provided. To reserve a seat, call 604-467-5179.

Celebrate our earth
Celebrated every April 22, Earth Day is the largest, most celebrated environmental event worldwide. More than 6 million Canadians join 1 billion people in over 170 countries in staging events and projects to address local e nv i ron me nt a l issues. Nearly every school child in Canada takes part in an Earth Day activity. Environment a l challenges abound as our daily actions pollute and degrade the fragile environment that humans and wildlife depend on to survive. In Canada, Earth Day has grown into Earth Week and even Earth Month to accommodate the profusion of events and projects. They range from large public events, such as Victoria’s Earth Walk (5,000 participants), Edmonton’s Earth Day Festival at Hawrelak Park (30,000 participants), and Oakville, Ontario’s Waterways Clean-up (2,000 participants) to the thousands of smaller events across the country. In Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, Earth Day organizers have joined forces with the arts for a celebration themed: Earth without Art is ‘Eh!’. To learn more, visit the ‘Celebrate Earth Day in Maple Ridge’ Facebook page.
10am - 2pm
Haney Farmer’s Market back for new season The Haney Farmers Market is back for another full season of fresh food, lively music and fun. On April 20, the market will be featuring local artists who have painted colourful fruit and vegetables on our fluttering banners and flags as part of Earth Day’s focus on art. Come to the information table and visit R Rooster in his robe of many colours that he wore to the Festival of Light last month. Watch for R Rooster’s exciting announcement of an event on June 8. Come to Earth Day and find out what it is. Regular vendors will add to the fun of Earth Day’s excitement with Sizzlin’ Smokey Dogs, Green Plate Specials from Big Feast and hot sweets from Gramma Dee’s. There are delicious cookies, pies, cakes and squares from the dedicated bakers of our Market. The regular market season begins on May 11 with Medieval Adventures in the Park, the famous Celebration Carrot Cake and challenging children’s activities in the Kids Korner tent. The market will take place

The farmers market runs on Saturdays May 11 to Nov. 9. in Memorial Peace Park from May 11 through to Nov. 9. The Dec. 7 winter market will gather together the best of artisans and crafters indoors at the Golden Ears United Church. The Haney Farmers Market is currently taking applications for food and craft vendors. They welcome local growers. All products must be locally made, baked or grown by the vendor. Prepared food vendors must be familiar with
The second annual Freecycle collecting and giving away gently used books, toys, and clothing will take place in the Greg Moore Youth Centre during Earth Day celebrations from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Businesses along 224th Street that will be collecting Freecycle donations from April 15 - 19 include Just Ducky’s, Monkey Business, and T’s – Once Upon a Tea Leaf. People can also bring any donations to a drop-off event on Friday, April 19 between 4-7 p.m. in front of The ACT or to the event itself on April 20. This is a 100 per cent free exchange. Do your part for the planet, by donating or picking up clothing, books or toys that need a second chance. For more information or to volunteer, email earthdayfreecycle@gmail.com.
Recycled Fashion Show Gather in the ACT Lobby from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. to express your design talent and create an outrageous and fashionable outfit made entirely with recycled materials. Members of the District Student Advisory Council will model the outfits at the start of the Earth Day opening ceremonies at 11 a.m.
Green Tech The Vancouver Electric Vehicle Association is back at Earth Day with an array of electric-powered vehicles. New to the park this year are two of the District of Maple Ridge’s eight electric vehicle charging stations. Also participating for the first time is the student-led team behind “KaVroom,” with cars from Maple Ridge Secondary’s annual soapbox derby, taking place on June 1, 2013 on North Avenue. Don’t miss Sun Bright Solar and a display describing plans to create a community-scale home energy retrofit program inspired by the NOW House Project.

Students find art in earth Behold the power of fish S
tudents from Maple Ridge’s Environmental School will share their passion for the outdoors with art. One of the school’s philosophies is to incorporate curriculum into the natural world, and art is no exception. Karena Harvey, a local artist and parent at the school, leads the students on weekly art adventures, where they engage in a variety of activities and the students are particularly keen to participate in found art. She enjoys this activity with the students because she “loves that every student is so engaged. They produced some beautiful pieces of art.” Students are asked to gather natural items from their surroundings and bring them together to create an interesting piece. The students dream up rock cars being chased by stick tornadoes, birds nests woven out of thin twigs, frogs created out of leaves and more.

A frog made out of leaves. “It’s such a fun activity to do” shared Gavin Mulcahy, a student at the school. “It’s sort of like a mysterious puzzle, you have to find all the right items, and then try and put them all together.” Stop by the Environmental School tent at Earth Day Celebrations, to learn more and participate in this familycentered activity.
Cycle Recycle A Cycle Recycle station hosted by HUB will be featured again at this year’s Earth Day event to give used bicycles a new lease on life. Thanks to donations by individuals, Maple Ridge Cycle
and Ridge Meadows Recycling Society, more people will get a free used bicycle. If you’re interested in a bike, please drop by between 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. to take a look at and try out the bikes. Then enter your ticket into a draw (maximum of three tickets per family). The draw to give the bikes away will take place in front of the Leisure Centre at 1 p.m.. You must be present to win your free bike. Don’t forget to take a look at HUB’s displays and pick up a Translink bike map from their booth. HUB: Your Cycling Connection hopes to see lots of people on their bikes at the Earth Day event. If you’re wondering where you can park your bike, there are several bike racks along 224th Street, as well as in front of the Leisure Centre and both on the side of, and in front of City Hall. There are also bike racks in front of the Youth Centre, on the north side entrances of Haney Place Mall, and, of course, the chicken bike rack at the Haney Farmer’s Market. Info: bikehub.ca.

There are many fish themes events around Earth Day. • Stop at the “Big Fish Tent” for Storytime Corner. With help from the Alouette River Management Society, Earth Day was able to borrow the colourful, 50-foot long tent from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Come inside and enjoy enviro-lit and crafts while checking out the Community Literacy Committee’s book swap and a VIP Storytime - or two. Storytime will take place in the park if it’s sunny or at the Greg Moore Youth Centre if it rains. • As part of the Maple Ridge Earth Day Eco-Art festival, Stream of Dreams will be partnering with ARMS to bring the everpopular fish-painting and salmon education to kids of all ages. The painted fish will then be mounted on the Allco Fish Hatchery fence creating an inspiring mural for the public to see when they visit Allco Park and the hatchery. ARMS will have a booth set up with display information about its environmental education programs and volunteer opportunities offered to the public. ARMS educators offer a wide range of fun and educational nature programs to children in School District 42 and from its Rivers Heritage Centre in Maple Ridge. This year ARMS is introducing a brand new program called “It’s a Bug’s Life” which teaches children about the importance of our pollinators including bees and butterflies. • Goodbye Chums and the opening of the new Bell-Irving Fish Hatchery takes place the day after Earth Day, on Sunday,

eXtreme theatre presents Lewis Carroll’s Alice In Wonderland by M o ni s ha M a r tin s staff reporter

ith a waddle and wiggle, Tweedledum and Tweedledee switch spots and end up tangled. They’ve soon forgotten a tiff they had about a rattle, made peace and decided not to battle.

“We are practically identical.” Aden Born, tweedledee in Alice in Wonderland “They are alway confused with their names and don’t know who they are,” says Aden Born, agreeing the twin brothers from Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland are downright silly. “We think very highly of manner,” adds Connor Buzza, who plays

Janna Grant, 10 as Alice and Emma Dougan, 12, as the White Rabbit in eXtreme Theatre’s production of Alice in Wonderland. The first-time thespians have Tweedledum to Born’s Tweedledee. “But we don’t have the best man- memorized their lines and learned their dance steps but admit they are ners.” Cast as the troublesome twins in slightly anxious about being on a eXtreme Theatre’s musical produc- big stage. “I’m fine acting in front of the tion, Born and Buzza are trying to stay in step. They are mimicking class,” says Born, nodding in agreement when Tweedledum interjects each other’s movements to a tee. “We are practically identical,” says that rehearsals have been “tons of fun.” Born, with a laugh.
Aden Born as Tweedledee and Connor Buzza as Tweedledum. “We both think we are song and scene ready,”says Buzza. “The nerves maybe the hardest part.” Featuring two casts of 35 homeschooled students from across Metro Vancouver, Alice in Wonderland is a fast-paced stage adaptation of the Lewis Carroll tale with classic Disney songs including “I’m Late,” “The Un-birthday Song” and “ZipA-Dee-Doo-Dah.” Join Alice’s madcap adventures in Wonderland as she chases the White Rabbit, races the Dodo Bird, gets tied up with the Tweedles, raps with a bubble-blowing Caterpillar, and beats the Queen of Hearts at her own game. Cast as the protagonist, Coquitlam’s Janna Grant is a fan of Al-
ice’s adventure. “My mom’s always had a thing for the Mad Hatter,” says Grant, a precocious 10-year-old who played Tinkerbell in last year’s production. “We’ve seen the movie a few times. I mean, it’s such nonsense,” she exclaims. “It’s probably the most fun play to do because you can do anything.” Just like Alice, Grant admits she daydreams a lot. “I do have to say, I kind of relate to Alice,” she says, with a smile. The busy bunny who leads Alice down the rabbit-hole is Emma Dougan. “He’s just so anxious about a lot of stuff but he never really knows where he’s going,” she says. Just like her cast mate, Dougan, 12, enjoys dreaming, especially the weird ones that leave her scratching her head the next morning. “I dream about going to different lands,” says Dougan. “But never about jumping into a rabbit hole.” • eXtreme Theatre presents Alice in Wonderland Jr. at the ACt in Maple Ridge, April 24 to 26 at 7 p.m. and April 27 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. For tickets, call 604-4762787 or visit actmapleridge.org.
One Man Star Wars Trilogy One man, Charles Ross, plays all the characters based on the original Star Wars trilogy. With effects, great factoids and music from John Williams’ score, the stage comes alive as ships are flown and battles are fought. Don’t miss this high-energy, side-splitting romp through a galaxy far, far away!

Factories and Alleyways is a band of brothers, bonded together in the melodies they sing and the stories they tell. Taking their cues from the timeless works of The Band, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, The Eagles, Bruce Springsteen, and Whiskeytown, Factories and Alleyways produces music lush with three-part harmonies, delivered with raw emotion and soul. The band performs songs that bristle with live energy and warmth - they’ll make you dance, they’ll make you cry. Canadiana, a follow-up to their 2012 debut, is due for release in the summer. The band plays the Billy Miner Pub in Maple Ridge Thursday, April 18.

Vice president Diana Frances dreamed up the partly scripted comedy about two perky and repressed 1950s housewives with Ellie Harvie when the pair performed at the Outrageous Women’s Cabaret at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts in Burnaby in 2005. They borrowed the name, Leave it to Cleavage, from their own improv group when they used to appear at Women on Wednesdays at Punchlines in Gastown. For the show, Frances said they also incorporated tips from a 1955 Good Housekeeping magazine arti-

cle, which at the time was making the rounds on the internet. The article was titled Rules for Being a Good Housewife. “I thought it was super-hilarious,” Frances said, “so we created the show around being a good housewife. “We open the show by talking to the audience, telling them the rules for being a good housewife but they have to fill in the blanks and we have to justify it and make sense of it.” The pair has performed Leave it to Cleavage about a dozen times
including in a tour in 2006, which was remounted last year with a new character: a German immigrant neighbour portrayed by Christine Lipp (Zero Avenue, Da Vinci’s Inquest, Millennium). For its last two tour dates in Coquitlam and Maple Ridge, Frances and Harvie have also brought in a maid, played by Denise Jones. “I’d love to do another tour where we add a husband,” Frances quipped. Frances said Leave it to Cleavage is “the perfect girls’ night out. It’s a comedy that celebrates women but doesn’t take it too seriously.” Men, she said, will love the content too “because we’re really taking the piss out of ourselves and our own issues around the 50s and now, and gender differences.” But mostly men are needed in the crowd to participate in the second act, which involves a game show called the Battle of the Sexes — complete with a chance to win a (fake) $50,000 grand prize.

I would show them how to hold the cat and in some cases, I would tell them to simply stay away from the cat because I knew any interaction would be painful. My kids have never pulled a tail, or yanked an ear, or poked an eye. They know animals hurt too and they know that some just want to be left alone. And once in a while they luck out when mom brings home a friendly one that they can actually dress up, or cuddle with, or carry around. We need to give our kids more credit. They are capable of learning kindness just as they are capable of learning that fire is hot, cement is hard, and tree branches can break under their weight. There is no reason for an animal to lose their home just as there is no reason for a child to terrorize an animal. We are the adults and they learn from us. With three teams from Mexico providing international flavour, Westview secondary held its second annual soccer exchange and international tournament over five days ending on Thursday. There were eight girls teams and eight boys in the event, for students in Grades 8-10. The boys final came down to a shootout between Tepeyac and Sullivan Heights. Sullivan Heights (Surrey) scored in the first few minutes of the game, but the Mexicans answered late to put the game into overtime. Another 10 minutes of extra time decided nothing, but Sullivan Heights wins 5-4 in a shootout. “The soccer is very good,” said organizer Dennis Schmidt. “The final went to a shootout, and it came down to the last shooter.” The tall Surrey boys keeper dove for a Tepayac shot labelled for the top corner in the first round of the shootout, and that was the

difference in the game. In the girls final, Abbotsford Traditional was beaten by Sullivan Heights 2-0. Schmidt played up the cross-cultural aspects of the event, with both teams’ national anthems playing before the final games, there is a parade of flags, and souvenir T-shirts for the players. The opposing Canadian coaches all tell him they want back in next year. “The kids like the language on the other side of the field, and the international aspect to it,” he said. He said the players can also see a marked difference in the style of play from the Latin players – they have more flair. “The soccer culture is part of them. These kids have grown up with the game, and they passionate about their teams.” Where Canadian coaches are content to have their players kick the ball ahead and run onto it, the Mexican players show more finesse and ball control skills, and their coaches ask them to make skillful plays. The Westview girls won, tied and lost in three outings, while the Wildcat boys tied a game and lost two. Schmidt explained that the Mexican players, from Guadalajara, are all home-stay students while they visit here for the tournament. So too do Westview students live with Mexican families when they travel to Mexico for the other side of this soccer exchange. Sports can span cultural barriers. He remembers sitting in the home of his Mexican home stay host. The man was an engineer, and here was an educator, both knowing little of the other’s language, staring awkwardly at each other. Finally Schmidt asked him “Chivas? Atlas?” referring to the two professional sides that his host might cheer for. “And I see a spark in his eye, and pretty soon he’s naming players,” he said. The event was sponsored by Soccer Xpress and Kelloggs – the latter giving cereals and snacks to the home stay parents for their guests. “It takes a community to put on an event like this,” said Schmidt. “It is very much a friendly. “Every single team wants to come back.”

Slavin named to national position The Canadian Ball Hockey Association (CBHA) has chosen Gary Slavin from Maple Ridge as its new minors high performance director. Slavin took on the organization of a street hockey league after school as a teen, and this early ball hockey experience was just the start of a long and successful career in ball hockey as a player, coach, father (of two young players) and league executive. Over the last seven years he has coached one or two teams in ‘house’ league in addition to coaching competitively in two provincials, seven Western Challenge Cups, six Junior Nationals and one Junior World Championship. During this period Slavin also served on the executives of the Ridge Meadows Minor Ball Hockey and West Coast Minor Ball Hockey Associations. In 2012 Gary was appointed general manager of U16 and U18 Junior Team Canada, and sat on the CBHA Junior Team Canada High Performance Committee.
