A Village of Nakusp councillor, Joseph Hughes, is adding his name to the candidates list for those seeking the MLA seat for the Kootenay-West riding. The married, 29-year-old father of three (ages seven, five and three) is in his fourth term as a councillor with the Village of Nakusp.

Joseph Hughes is running for the Kootenay West MLA seat in the May 14 election. Submitted

Hughes said he is running as an inde-

pendent in the May 14 general election to help bring more power to the voices of constituents directly to the Legislature. “I’ve got a strong team behind me and a lot of people who are really excited to see my message put out there,” Hughes said in a telephone interview Thursday, April 11. Hughes said he has had his eye on a higher level of involvement for some time because he feels there

is a disconnect between what democracy should be and what it is. “We have the ability with technology, and with the way our society can deliver information, to involve people in the conversation and I don’t feel like politicians are taking this tool and using it because they are a little bit afraid of being under the public eye,” he said. “Since I’ve been on council, I’ve been on

a number of committees that have given me a lot of experience.” Hughes said he has been involved with the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) and the Association of Kootenay and Boundary Local Governments and is educated on the concerns of the area as a whole and not just Nakusp. He said there are common issues

to travel out of town. Hughes added B.C. has a wealth of natural resources and must rethink the way in which we use them while addressing sustainability. He sees the ongoing review of the Columbia Treaty as a “monumental decision”. “We are at the whim of the American need for water and as I look to the future, I fear what current governments will do with a new treaty,” he said. “Our valley has suffered unparalleled consequences for this treaty and we need an advocate that will not let these realities be silenced by governments. We need representation that is free from the muzzling of party politics and lobbyist dictated priorities.” Approached by the NDP in the past, Hughes said a lot of his philosophies parallel that party but the reason he has never run with party backing is because he doesn’t believe that it’s the best form of representative government for our area.

throughout the valley, such as the retention of people and the support services they require, such as health care. “As health starts failing, seniors have to go farther and farther from home and that’s a real challenge,” he said. “They become disconnected from the places and people they need most in those times.” Hughes believes the main solution with health care is the decentralization of as many services as possible. “Interior Health does a very good job with a challenging situation of trying to provide health care in small communities,” he said. “But I think there is a lot more that can be done that would enable citizens to stay home as long as possible. That means more at-home care and facilities that can be more localized. It doesn’t have to be great big facilities but it can be smaller satellite care facilities.” Hughes said he would like to see more travelling specialists as opposed to people always having

Official Community Plan (OCP) and carry out OCP consultations and focus sessions with seniors. “We wanted to ensure the aging demographics were involved in community planning,” said Lila Cresswell, Chief Administrator for the village. After gathering sufficient information a second grant was approved in March 2012, and the village was able to hire Vickie Fitzpatrick as a seniors coordinator the following month. “There have always been many programs for seniors but before this we had no tools to show them what was out there,” Fitzpatrick said. “It’s all about social inclusion and healthy activities for seniors,” explained Cresswell, who is heavily involved with the program as well. Since its implementation last year, the Beaver Valley’s Age-friendly program (AFP) has been engaging seniors in numerous activities and social events with great success. Activities such as bowling, yoga, balance classes and ceramics, are only a few of the ways seniors in the Beaver Valley are getting active and involved in the

community. Luncheons are held each month at the Beaver Valley manor as a social event where the seniors are served healthy, delicious meals. The luncheons are clear evidence that the AFP program is succeeding, with the most recent one drawing in around 140 attendees. Along with activities, the AFP offers various other services to seniors that would otherwise be difficult for them to attain.

“There have always been many programs for seniors but before this we had not tools to show them what was out there.” Vickie Fitzpatrick “ Transp or t ation is a major issue for seniors in this area,” Fitzpatrick said. To help combat this problem the AFP has established a volunteer driver program where members of the community will chauffeur elderly citizens from point A to point B and back again if needed. Another tool AFP has constructed to make seniors lives a little easier is the “Handy Person List.” Cresswell ex-

plained this as a list of highly recommended businesses that have the time and expertise to assist seniors very quickly. This list is important to seniors because with many local businesses having expanded so much they are often too busy to help immediately. The major success of the AFP can partially be attributed to the backing it has received by Fruitvale’s council and Mayor Patricia Cecchini, who are all very involved with securing funding and volunteering. “I’ve learned so much from these events. I just hate to miss them,” Cecchini said. “It’s important to remember, even though our appearance changes our spirit doesn’t. And we pride ourselves on community spirit in Fruitvale.” The AFP has been such a success that the village has decided to fund it via the parks and recreation program. The next luncheon will be held April 16. For more information on the program and its services or if you are interested in volunteering, contact Fitzpatrick at vickief@telus.net.

Elsie Fredericks was awarded with a 30-year Royal Canadian Legion membership pin on Saturday evening in Grand Forks, along with a number of long serving legion members. But her big award came at the end of the night, when Joe Tatangelo, president of the Grand Forks Royal Canadian Legion Branch 59, presented her with the Queens Diamond Jubilee Award. “I know she will wear this medal, along with her other deserving medals with great pride,” said Tatangelo as he gave Fredericks the commemorative medal, which is served to honour significant contributions and achievements by Ca-

ident, treasurer, secretary and director. “I have known Elsie since August 2006 and I have found her to be an honorable contact for all region matters,” said Tatan-

gelo. “She shows her strong leadership qualities daily.” Elsoe Fredsericks joined the legion in 1983 and has been with the same branch ever since.

The Nelson Civic Theatre’s April movie weekend celebrates spring with great films for kids and adults. Silver Linings Playbook shows Friday at 7:30 and Saturday at 9:15. Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence star in this romantic comedy-drama that looks at relationships through the ups and downs of mental health, dance competitions, and football – with complications, and some surprising silver linings. The film was nominated for numerous awards, winning Best Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay among others. On Saturday, two animated films for kids by acclaimed anime master Hayao Miyazaki come to Nelson from the New

York International Children’s Film Festival retrospective. For the younger set, Ponyo shows at 4 p.m., a strange and beautiful adventure about a five-year-old boy and his relationship with a goldfish princess who longs to become human. At 6:45 p.m. Castle in the Sky is sure to appeal to lovers of the Nausicaa series of manga graphic novels, or anyone who

loves a great story. A young boy and a girl with a magic crystal race against pirates and foreign agents as they search for a legendary floating castle in this film, which won the Animage Anime Grand Prix. Saturday evening at 9:15, catch Silver Linings Playbook after dinner out at one of Nelson’s fabulous restaurants. The Civic Theatre

Society continues to show films on the third weekend of each month while fundraising for digital projection and sound – an essential upgrade as print films will no longer be made after this year. The Community Challenge has raised $115,000 towards the May 1 $150,000 goal. To donate, buy a membership, or find out more go to civictheatre.ca.

GF building inspections to be handled by City Grand Forks briefs The City of Grand Forks will take over building inspections within city boundaries under a new Land and Development department on July 1. The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) has performed the service. The new department

will create a one-stop shop for future development within the boundary of the city. Ruckle fire on Friday night There was a fire in the Ruckle area of Grand Forks last Friday night. The Boundary Neighbourhood Watch Facebook page

had a number of posts regarding the fire, which was in the 7th Street area, and two people were taken to the hospital – they were said to be rescued out of the house by neighbours. “Both were taken to Boundary (Hospital) to be treated for inhaling smoke,” witness Derek Taylor said.

La Dolce Vita

Join the club

Submitted by Lorne Eckersley – publisher of the Creston Valley Advance, a Black Press publication

On a dreary grey day recently a box was delivered to my office by courier. One glance at the size and shape of the box immediately made the day brighter. It contained, I knew without even checking the label, a selection of a half dozen bottles from one of my favourite wineries. As I drove home later that day with the box on the seat beside me, I thought back to my first experience with a wine club, probably about 20 years ago. The concept was a relatively new idea and being able to get wine delivered to the door seemed like a magical concept. My first delivery from Sumac Ridge Winery—this was back in the day when it was still owned independently by the legendary Harry M c Wa t t e r s — c o n tained a dozen bottles in a wooden case. Along side was a box containing six etched wine glasses with the Sumac Ridge name, and a waiter’s corkscrew. I still have the box, the distinctively-shaped glasses and the opener. The box delivered to my office last week came from Serendipi-

ty Winery, one of my favourite small producers, located on the Naramata Bench. It’s the only wine club I belong to at the moment, primarily because we buy most of our wine on visits to wineries when I go out to do interviews and tastings for this column and Wine Trails magazine assignments. But Serendipity is a small producer and I don’t want to chance missing out on a release because my Okanagan visits don’t always take me to Naramata. Inside the box were three reds, a rosé and two white wines. Tasting notes for each were included, as was a personal letter from owner Judy Kingston. The letter explained her selections, included comments from her daughter, Katie, acknowledged our meeting at a Calgary tasting last month and thanked me for the stories I have written about the winery. In a random survey, conducted by going into the web sites of wineries that popped into my head, I found that about two-thirds have wine clubs. I can’t think of a good excuse for those who don’t. Having commitments ahead of time, with credit card use permission, is money in the bank.

Golden anniversary celebration planned for Silver City Days Trail Staff West Kootenay Advertiser

Trail’s Silver City Days celebrates a half-century of civic celebration this year

and for most of the past 50 years there has been a Miss Trail chosen to lead the festivities. Apart from a brief period in the ear-

ly part of the 2000’s when no one stepped forward to organize the event, there has been a long succession of tiaras and ball gowns, talent shows

and tears of joy. So this year when the organizing committee was trying to decide how they could celebrate the 50th anniversary of

the pageant they decided to go big and invite all the former Miss Trail winners back. “It’s been a lot of work to go back over

50 years of pageant winners and try to track them down,” explained Trail councillor, Eleanor Gattafoni-Robinson. “But so far, as of today,

Choose to recycle your milk containers.

we think we have 25 women coming.” The committee started with a local word of mouth campaign to start gathering information on past winners of the pageant and eventually enlisted the help of the Trail Historical Society to help with the research. “We’ve been working on this since 2012,” said Gattafoni-Robinson. “It’s been a real history lesson for myself. “We did an internet search and spoke to family members and really tried not to leave anybody out. We looked for anybody who might have connections and were hoping to meet them all.” The positive responses from former Miss Trail winners has them returning to Trail from all over B..C, a few from Alberta, quite a number who are still local, and even an international Miss Trail. “We’ve even got one coming from Australia, Shawna Hardwick (Fraser) from 1983,” said Gattafoni-Robinson. “I think it speaks volumes on how they perceived the program and what it did for them that so many are coming and from so far away.” Pigeon pill plan

And choose a better future for all of us.

More people than ever are doing what’s right for the environment. That’s why over 666,000 kg of milk containers were recycled at Return-It™ Depots in 2012. And it’s easy to make the right choice a part of your routine; just bring them in along with your bottles and cans.

For more information and to find a Return-It™ Depot near you, call 1-800-330-9767 or visit return-it.ca/milk Zero deposit paid = zero deposit refunded.

Forget about a pigeon cull. How about a pigeon pill? The City of Trail is now researching methods of birth control for the birds. “It seems incredible to me that we are spending this much time on pigeons,” said Coun. Robert Cacchioni. “But I want to mention that council is looking at this problem. “And in actual fact, we are looking at finding a feed that we can give to these particular birds that will render them sterile. In effect, a birth control pill.”

excited to offer a full season of hands-on natural beekeeping workshops and field days. From the spring through the fall each

South Nelson Elementary student Madison Hopkyns explains to judges her project which dealt with the freezing temperatures of various liquids. The occasion was the West Kootenay Regional Science Fair, held April 15 at Stanley Humphries Secondary School in Castlegar.

Nathan World of Trafalgar Middle School did his project on wind power. He feels his exhibit was “simple and effective” and says most of his efforts went into coming up with the most efficient blade angles for power generation.

Caleb Poulter of St. Michael’s Elementary in Trail chose the endangered Manatee (SEa Cow) as his Science Fair theme.

The earliest known reference to the Kootenay Lake community of Argenta appeared in the Nelson Miner of December 10, 1892: “The Nelson boys who went up to Kaslo on Saturday last seem to have had a pretty good time. What with excursions to Lardo City, Argenta and Duncan City, and afterwards a careful and elaborate examination of the ins and outs of Kaslo, they must have enjoyed themselves.” The same edition carried the first real estate ad for the townsite, whose agent was C.E. Perry & Co. of Nelson and Kaslo. Argenta is either a modified form of argentum, the Latin noun for silver, or argentea, the feminine adjective. Argenta Creek probably takes its name from the town, not vice versa. Argenta’s days as a mining outpost were short lived. It instead became a quiet agricultural community before being revitalized by the arrival of American Quakers in the 1950s. The welcome sign once read: “You are entering Argenta. Are you lost or crazy?” Today it simply says

Revelstoke’s Kootenay Mail reported on October 26, 1895: “The CPR townsite at the Arrow Lakes terminus has been surveyed but the lots have not yet been placed on the market. It is said that the location of the place will be known as Columbia City.” However, on November 9 the same newspaper said: “The CPR has definitely decided upon ‘Arrowhead’ as the name of the new townsite at the terminus of the Arrow Lakes branch.” There are two theories behind the name: an article in the Arrow Lakes News of January 31, 1930 claimed a battle occurred at the site and many arrowheads were later found there. Alternately, the name refers to the place as head of steamboat navigation on the Arrow Lakes, where it was moved

head, which means “buffalo robe.” Although buffalo aren’t known to have been in the area, Randy Bouchard and Dorothy Kennedy wrote in First Nations Ethnography & Ethnohistory in BC’s Lower Kootenay/Columbia Hydropower Region that it may suggest the name “dates only to 1838 when the HBC post was built here, and that naming this place ‘buffalo robe’ was derived from a practice of obtaining buffalo robes here as a trading item — of course, this is only speculation.” Streets in the Arrowhead townsite, surveyed in 1895, included Kilpatrick, Front, Lonsdale, Ford, Beatty, Cook, and Foley. The post office opened July 1, 1896 and closed September 28, 1968. All that remains following construction of the Hugh Keenleyside dam is the cemetery, although at low water you can still make out where the main street once stood. The townsite, beneath Mount Sproat, is visible from aboard the Galena Bay to Shelter Bay ferry. Next week: Aylwin.

Horoscope Michael O’Connor

for the

Week

April 19, 2013

Tip of the Week: The Full Moon in Scorpio on April 25 is a Lunar Eclipse. The New Moon in Taurus on May 9 is a Solar Eclipse and the other Solar Eclipse of the year occurs in Scorpio as well on November 3rd. It is an interesting synchronicity worth mentioning that Taurus and Scorpio, which are polar opposite signs, or the two sides of the same coin, both share close symbolic links by translation with the Chinese Snake, which is the year sign we are in now. The earthy wisdom of the snake which implies practicality and ambition is the Taurus aspect and the skin shedding transformational aspect refers more to Scorpio. Pay close attention and you will see a good deal of both in added measure already underway everywhere! Generally, eclipses carry an added charge compared to the usual New and Full Moons. The degree of impact does depend upon the specifics of one’s actual Natal Chart and this requires close examination by an astrologer. This Full Moon occurs at 5 Scorpio 46. It was once generally believed that eclipses brought bad luck. While it is true that they can certainly synchronize with significant changes, endings and new beginnings, these can in fact be positive ones. So, the next few weeks will prove very pivotal, certainly for some more than others but everyone will feel the impact at least indirectly. In fact, the changes implied often begin prior to the actual eclipse, even up to a several weeks prior. Astrology is a wonderful tool to more closely examine the effects and support people to be more aware of what is implied and how to consciously handle the changes. P.S. Happy Earth Day – April 22.

The Sun entering Taurus will add traction to your drive. Your ambitions have been increasing steadily. This trend will continue and very noticeably this week. All being well you have already initiated projects. If not, it may require extra enthusiasm and effort to build your momentum. Begin it now!

You are ready to take a pioneering approach. The desire to express your self in a variety of ways is likely. Despite a slow start to the season, you have likely already begun to sample the soil. You can expect your energy levels and ambitions to rise now and for the next several weeks. Commitment is the keyword.

Dreams of what might be are beginning to dance in your imagination once again. Yet, in order to receive the inspirations you may have to step back and out of the limelight for a while. If you have already retreated then allow yourself to remain there for a while longer. You can still keep your communications alive and dynamic from there.

An impulse to build upon new and existing friendships is leading you to reach out. The best way might be to invite friends out to play. Since you are feeling extra inventive these days you should have access to an abundance of good ideas. These may even gain wider recognition. Trust your feelings and be willing to take risks.

Shifts and changes close to home are gaining your full attention. These are likely activating you in your public and/or professional life. The reverse scenario is also possible. This is activating visions of the future and creative directives. Use this influence to gain public attention and to request favours and earned rewards.

A purification process continues. It is likely that it is linked to your career. However, your love life stands to be affected, for better or worse. There is a deeper psychological theme at play which speaks of purification and renewal. Now is a good time to initiate healthier rhythms for the sake of your love life and career.

‘Love is in the air….’ Are you getting your share? If not, you are experiencing a rising determination to feel fulfilled in your most intimate relationships. The keys to your success includes seeing a bigger picture and increasing your exposure. Yet, be careful not to look for love in too many places and faces. Clarify what you need then list your wants.

Spring is in the air and it is becoming increasingly clear. For you the focus is mainly upon spring cleaning. It is important for your success to be willing to work hard and give more than usual. You may still be contending with conflicting desires. This extra effort may include some soul searching to decipher your priorities.

The seasonal change is calling you out to play. Yet, there is a serious streak to it and it may not simply be all fun and games. A sporting and competitive tone is implied. Up until recently, the urge to remain behind the scenes was strong but that cycle is done. A spirit of adventure is rising beckoning you to ride with it.

A whole new initiative is underway. You may have to exercise restraint not to paint blue war stripes on your face. You are laying a lot on the line and wish you could feel more confident. Even so, you are pushing to get to the bottom of things. You want to produce something of integrity and beauty.

You are beginning to see the world as with new eyes. This includes your place within it. You are open to entertaining new prospects and possibilities. The timing is extra good to do so. Yes, you will likely have to gamble to succeed. That is the way the game is played. At least take the risk to trust your heart felt feelings about what you want and need.

A big momentum is steadily building. Whether by desire or necessity your ambition levels are rising. You are ready to enter new territory. Fortunately, your confidence levels are also rising and this trend will continue into 2014. Make good of this wave and do not take it for granted. Focus to build a momentum that extends years into the future.

Join the Club

Continued from P. A9

Just as importantly, it allows wineries to maintain an on-going relationship with customers. Serendipity Winery offers three levels of membership in its wine club. The first is really just a free subscription to an emailed newsletter and the opportunity to buy special releases. The second ships 6 bottles twice a year and the third tier ships 6 bottles three times a year. Membership to in the second and third tiers also includes an invitation to a summer barrel tasting and barbecue and the option of spending a day in the vineyard, learning to prune or pick grapes along a row named for the member. In my informal survey, I found that most wine club memberships offer dis-

counts to other wine purchases, as well as tasting notes. Some include free shipping, recipes and restaurant discounts. Poplar Grove members who refer new members get a $10 credit for purchases. Black Widow members get preferential booking at the winery’s bed and breakfast. Some offer options for different numbers of bottles in a shipment and in the frequency of those shipments. The most obvious benefit for members, though, is the same as it is for wineries. It gives the member an on-going relationship with the winery. Show up at the tasting room and mention you are a wine club member and the likelihood is that you will get extra-attentive service, waived tasting fees and an invitation to take a tour. In essence, you become

part of the winery’s family. Many years ago, on our first visit to Sumac Ridge, we were told that people who visit the winery and make purchases are the ones who enable a winery to expand and offer better experiences for visitors. Why? Because other than taxes, all the money from those purchases stays in the winery’s pockets. There are no sales commissions, shipping fees or wholesale discounts. Other than the shipping costs, wine club memberships offer the same benefit to the winery, with the added level of security that comes with the pre-ordering of products. If you like wines from a particular winery, consider checking the web site to see if it has a wine club. It’s a great way to stay connected.

News Independent candidate hopes voters choose ‘quality over quantity’ Continued from P. A2

“I’m not a politician, I’m a representative and I have no appetite for politics,” he said. “When I’m at UBCM or talking to ministers, there’s no intimidation on either side of the table; it’s a matter of working together and understanding solutions on a common ground. There are no issues with cooperation because I don’t

have this history of bad blood or fighting between parties.” Hughes believes that sitting as an independent means he would have more power to bring constituents’ voices directly to Victoria. “We can take that full consensus to Victoria,” he said. “We don’t have to have it watered down by a political party and their policies and political games. I think

it’s imperative that people understand an independent is tied directly to the people and to the legislative assembly.” Hughes said each election is a new opportunity for people to get the best bang for their vote. “There is $160,000 of taxpayer money* paid toward the MLA position and people need to know their input is being received in Victoria,”

haps the best way to put it.” Hughes said he wouldn’t be able to compete with the bank accounts of other candidates but hopes people keep in mind “quality over quantity.” “I won’t be able to invest as much money on my campaign but what’s more important is the message,” he said. “By independent, I am by no means alone. “We can take that whole consensus to Victoria. We don’t have to have it watered down by a political party...” Joseph Hughes he said. “They need to spend a little time to meet me, to challenge me and they will find that I stand for… reason, is per-

had so many people say they will dedicate themselves to rallying voters for me.” Hughes said he is a red seal carpenter and also holds a diploma in Marketing Management (Mount Royal, Calgary, 2001). Hughes owns a woodworking business, is a hobby farmer with a small acreage and is also involved with another larger farm.

Hughes may be campaigning in the Castlegar area before the Spring Fling but does plan to take that particular opportunity to hear from residents in the community.
