Did running with mom save her from harm?
Jill Constantino wonders if her decision in Boston kept her from the blast Wanda Chow

burnaby’s Jill costantino, 35, was in boston with her mother, Pat cranston-calder, 65, of sarnia, ont. to run in the marathon.
A Burnaby woman’s love for her mother likely helped save her life at the Boston Marathon Monday. The prestigious running race was marked by tragedy after two bombs went off near the finish line, killing three and injuring more than 170 people, many critically. Jill Costantino, 35, was in Boston with her mother, Pat Cranston-Calder, 65, of Sarnia, Ont. “It was a lifelong dream of theirs to do this together,” said Jill’s husband, Lorenzo Costantino on Tuesday. “She’s running with her mother, who obviously is quite a bit slower than her, which actually turns out to have been a very good thing.” After years of trying, and struggling through illness, the mother-daughter duo finally qualified for the race together this year, just barely, according to a recent article in the Sarnia Observer. The original plan was for Jill to run ahead. “She would have been at the finish line waiting for her mom,” Lorenzo said. “About a month ago she decided, ‘you know it’s so cool, why don’t I just run with her instead of run ahead.’ She didn’t really care about her time or anything.” As Jill said of her mom to the Sarnia Observer, “It’s so amazing watching her progress and how excited she gets about the races. She’s always been there for me ... and it’s cool to have this kind of experience with her, to be her support.” That decision likely saved Jill from injury. But it was a tense few hours before Lorenzo knew their fate. He got a phone call telling him what had happened and ended up glued to a TV set following the news, all while not saying anything to their six-year-old son who was in the room. 1 12-03-05 4x1.25_small_appliances_ad_final.pdf Please see bombing, A4

Lougheed’s turn to become high-density neighbourhood: Mayor City’s longterm planning encourages investment Wanda Chow
wchow@burnabynewsleader.com
First came Metrotown, then the towers at Edmonds and Brentwood. Now it’s Lougheed town centre’s turn to be transformed by high-density development, said Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan in his state of the city speech to the Burnaby Board of Trade Wednesday. “Starting now, Lougheed town centre begins to transition from a mall-based economy to more compact, high-density development,” CorrigAn Corrigan said. “The longawaited confirmation of SkyTrain’s arrival offers Burnaby yet another opportunity to maximize the utility of public transportation.” Burnaby city hall is in “initial discussions” with Shape Properties, the owner of Lougheed mall, on what form a redevelopment of the site might take. The results of the preliminary discussions will be the subject of public consultations later this year. But while the city has secured some amenities for the Evergreen SkyTrain line’s Burnaby section, it was unsuccessful in its “desperate struggle” to have the preparatory work for a future Cameron Street station included, Corrigan said. “The provincial government refused our offer to pay 50 per cent of any additional costs, making the addition of another station in the future highly unlikely.” Meanwhile, development continues at the city’s other three town centres which were planned 1:20 PM out decades ago. Bby Village staffer feels bomb blasts

Nancy Stagg, marketing coordinator for Burnaby Village Museum, is currently in Boston where she greeted her husband Rob at the finish line of the prestigious marathon Monday. While Rob Stagg, who works at Cameron Rec Centre, was clearing the finish line area and retrieving his checked bag, Nancy and a friend waited in a shop a block and a half away. About 20 minutes after Rob finished, and just as he was approaching the shop, the first bomb went off, said Nancy by phone Wednesday. Her friend was on the store’s upper level and saw the second bomb go off. “Even in the shop we could feel the vibration.” The store clerk immediately locked the front door, saying “there’s been a bomb.” Once outside Nancy witnessed the mass confusion that seemed to grip the city. “It was really surreal. I stepped out and some people were running towards the noise, some people were moving
away from the noise, some people had no idea there had been a noise.” Train lines were disrupted and it took the group about an hour before they could figure out how to navigate their way out of the area, along with tens of thousands of others. She said “the locals all just stepped up,” offering help with directions and the like. They eventually managed to get on a train. “We were all squished in like sardines, the mood of the crowd was very quiet. There was no pushing, no shoving … we were all just trying to sort it out at the same time.” It wasn’t until they got back to where they were staying in the Dorchester neighborhood that they saw what happened on TV and “got the shakes,” after realizing what a close call they had. “It was a little off-putting,” she said with some understatement. “The sirens basically continued all night long and even the next day,” said Nancy, who has since noticed extra security presence throughout the city. In Boston on Wednesday, she said, “there’s still a lot of chatter but everyone’s just getting on with it … Life has to go on.”

Rachel Fouladi wasn’t even sure if she was going to race when she travelled to Boston late last week. While trying to retrieve her checked bag, she could hear a cellphone ringing inside another waiting bag, likely someone trying to reach a loved one. Fortunately, Fouladi said, she didn’t have anyone waiting at the finish line for her. “Literally if I had been running at my normal pace … I could easily have been either crossing the finish line, going in front of where the bomb was. If I had been a couple minutes faster I would have been in front of the bomb.” If she had been even faster she likely would have been trying on a race jacket in the marathon store which had its windows blown out by one of the blasts. She had walked in the area of the blast site only the day before.

Fouladi is thankful she was spared the trauma of seeing the carnage first-hand, although a fellow runner who is a journalist from South America showed her photos he shot after finishing the race, including one in which a man is seen having lost his legs. She said she was never afraid and knew they were being kept away from the danger. And as a psychology professor at Simon Fraser University, Fouladi said she’s likely better equipped than most to deal with what she experienced. She understands the impact of stress and trauma, managing emotions and dealing with “grieving, shock, anger and sadness.” Fouladi plans to check in with a fellow runner she met at the airport Tuesday who found

She encourages people not to give up taking part in such positive and healthy activities as road races, and to “yes, be affected by what has happened but not let it change us.” Despite what happened, Fouladi said she would “definitely” run the prestigious Boston Marathon again although she would like to do it injury free. RCMP shut down meth lab found in highrise Three floors evacuated assumed they were gone when he arrived the next day to clean for several hours
“It’s believed it’s a methamphetamine lab. There was some product already there.” Police secured the unit until they could execute a search warrant at about 8 a.m. the next day when they completely dismantled the lab. Reid said if the landlord and police hadn’t showed up there’s a “strong possibility” the tenants would have returned to retrieve their equipment and drugs. “It’s an ongoing investigation until we can locate the individuals who were involved.”
the place. Instead, he found a lab set up. He immediately left and called police. Burnaby RCMP’s clandestine drug lab unit arrived to find some of the equipment was still active. They turned everything off and evacuated residents on three floors as a precaution, Reid said. Those residents were allowed back into their homes by 11 p.m. Once the equipment is turned off there is no longer a risk of fire or explosion from the flames and toxic chemicals, he noted.

A drug lab was shut down in a Brentwood-area highrise Monday evening, causing residents to be evacuated for several hours. The lab was first discovered at about 3:30 p.m. in a 16th-floor apartment of a building in the 4800-block of Brentwood Drive, said Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Dave Reid. The landlord had given his tenant 24 hours notice to vacate the unit and

ADRIAN RAESIDE:
QUESTION OF THE WEEK:
Don’t snooze this one The 2013 provincial election will be one of the most important in a generation. At a time when the economy is in slow motion, yet demands on the public purse are increasing, voters need to pay attention to who’s running. Of course, we say this for every election — to no avail. Last time around, in the 2009 provincial election, only about 50 per cent of voters bothered to cast a vote. Who is to blame and will things be any different this year? It’s hard to say. Is it negative advertising that turns people off ? B.C. NDP leader Adrian Dix says so and has promised a more positive campaign. But will that end indifference or will people turn away from boredom? Is it helplessness and apathy that keep people from the polls? Many simply don’t connect with government. B.C. Liberal leader Christy Clark has tried to be a populist (pandering?) premier, appealing to the hockey mom, but has failed to attract women’s support, pundits say. Why? Perhaps B.C. voters simply distrust anything politicians say. Clearly there is a disconnect and the media may have contributed to this malaise by blowing every little incident out of proportion. As in the story of the boy who cried wolf, many voters simply tune out after a while, yet, sadly, when there is a real issue, such as lack of funding for transit, many voters simply don’t see the connection between their vote and government policy. Instead, they leave the field to special interest groups to hijack the results. Truth is, politicians will only be accountable if we hold them accountable. We have a right to toss any of them out if they don’t do what they promised so voters need to pay attention to what politicians say and they need to find out who they are. Over the next few weeks, the NewsLeader will be covering the election with information from our local candidates. The rest is up to you.

Those in glass houses shouldn’t throw ads Adrian Dix: He kicks puppies. The attack ads by B.C. Liberal supporters haven’t quite dipped that deep into the muck, but give them time. Slinging mud is a timehonoured political strategy that, until relatively recently, Canadians naively thought was the domain of our southern neighbours — that is, until our federal parties saw that nasty works and unleashed a TV ad arsenal of minor keys, unflattering photos and selective quotations. And there are no innocents. Provincial parties from across the country and the political spectrum readily employ such tactics, creating villains where there are really only opponents, wars where there should be peaceful differences of ideology. For instance, for months now, in radio ads aired across B.C., supporters of the embattled Christy Clark crew have been shining a light on the NDP leader’s nefarious past in the
Richard Dal Monte Glen Clark government, the faked memo, etc. Another radio spot features voice actors — times really are tough in B.C.’s film industry — playing wideeyed rubes marvelling that Dix once got caught riding SkyTrain without a ticket. The horror, the horror. The horror is that anyone would buy this rubbish. If a citizen in the province of British Columbia decided he wouldn’t vote NDP because of the latter ad — as opposed to genuine differences about policy or concerns about Dix and company’s ability to lead B.C. and manage its economy — he deserves to lose the right to vote due to criminal stupidity.

Still, the political potshots got me thinking that anyone’s life contains potential fodder for attack ads. For example… • Richard Dal Monte: What’s up with that voice? He sounds like a villain… with a cold. Can we trust someone who sounds like he should be strapping James Bond to a laser-saw? • Richard Dal Monte: Look at his hair. It’s long and messy. Who would vote for someone who apparently doesn’t even own a brush — or a razor? • Richard Dal Monte: His dog Harry is named after a wizard. Does Richard Dal Monte believe in magic and why does he hate Muggles? Your children are Muggles. People wonder if Richard Dal Monte is secretly a Slytherin. • Richard Dal Monte: For 12 years, he’s edited a newspaper, changing things people have written. More mayors oppose transit funding referendum Liberals’ some tax rates. “It just doesn’t work, Fassbender any way you look at defends intent of party promise it.” Jeff Nagel Black Press
Several Metro Vancouver mayors are blasting what they say is the potentially disastrous election promise of the BC Liberals to put any new taxes or tolls for TransLink to a regional referendum. Some of the outspoken critics, including Port Coquitlam Mayor Greg Moore, have links to the party, but warned the move could thwart much-needed transit expansion because voters hate paying more for anything. “The hypocrisy of this policy platform proposal is unbelievable,” said Moore, noting the province hasn’t hesitated to raise medical premiums and
The issue was debated Wednesday morning at a meeting of the Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation. Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie called the proposed referendum “one more example of the abdication of leadership” by the governing Liberals on the question of how to refinance TransLink so it can build new transit lines. Brodie said area mayors have stuck their necks out to promote unpopular tax increases because they know improved transit is critical to the future of the region. And he said Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts is right to worry that a referendum could split the region into transit haves who refuse to vote in higher taxes to
pay for new lines to the transit have-nots. “It’s just a recipe for disaster,” Brodie said. “Going to referendum on a complex subject like this is an absolute utter and total mistake,” White Rock Mayor Wayne Baldwin said, adding it’s a “total abrogation of responsibility” for a government to suggest it. Despite best efforts to inform the public on any proposal, Baldwin
predicts perhaps 20 per cent will bother to vote and they’ll be dominated by tax-hike opponents. “We need a solution, we don’t need political posturing,” said Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart, who predicted the pledge won’t be helpful. Meanwhile, Langley City Mayor Peter Fassbender, who is running for the Liberals in SurreyFleetwood, admitted some concern with

is to work with the mayors’ council to determine what that is.” Fassbender acknowledged Watts’ concern South of the Fraser transit expansion could be blocked if a referendum in November of 2014 fails. “I got a call from Mayor Watts, who took the top of my head off when she heard that and said ‘Are you guys nuts?’”
He said he agrees any new system to fund TransLink expansion must be fair and equitable and a referendum must not pit different parts of the region against each other. Fassbender said the regional vision for transit expansion needs to be better explained to residents ahead of any talk of costs and how to pay for it.

Metro launches election site Metro Vancouver has unveiled www. localgovernmentmatters.ca, a website where it’s quizzing provincial parties on their positions on municipal issues leading up to the May 14 election. The regional district hopes it puts more focus on the need for reform of TransLink, the need for long-term sustainable funding for transit and infrastructure, and other municipal issues member cities want the next government to address. So far only the Green Party has provided answers, but the other main parties have promised to participate. “The board will not be endorsing any political party,” Metro vice-chair Raymond Louie said, calling it an “entirely non-partisan initiative.” The region says cities are profoundly affected by senior government decisions – such as new federal sewage effluent regulations that are forcing Metro to upgrade two treatment plants at a cost of $1.4 billion. The topics include agriculture, with a question asking what provincial parties would do to prevent industrialization of viable farmland.
the platform promise, while defending his party’s intent and urging other mayors not to overreact. “A referendum the way it is in a three-line platform statement raises a lot of questions,” he said, adding it doesn’t explain how it would be carried out. “Is that [referendum] question a dollars and cents question? Or is it a suite of options question? I don’t know. But the commitment

A Vancouver man has been arrested and charged by Transit Police after a 74-yearold woman was assaulted on SkyTrain. According to Transit Police, on April 8 at 12:40 p.m., the woman boarded SkyTrain at Surrey Central station, pulling a small wheeled grocery cart. When she sat down beside the suspect, her purse brushed his leg. Enraged, the suspect
raised his arm and clenched his fist toward the victim, swearing at her and threatening to break her neck. He spat on her head and continued to swear at her, telling her to move. The victim got off at Scott Road Station, very upset and shaken. Another passenger, who witnessed the incident and photographed the suspect, accompanied her. They reported the

BLRC win streak comes to an end The Burnaby Lake Rugby Club’s eight-game winning streak in the Rugby BC Premier League came to an end on the road last weekend. The Castaway Wanderers defeated BLRC 23-16 in Oak Bay on Saturday, but despite the loss the local squad remained tied for first place with a 9-4 record with James Bay Athletic Association. Both teams have 44 points, but are just two ahead of Capilano RFC. Burnaby will finish its season by playing host to the Bayside Sharks at the Burnaby Lake Sports
Complex tomorrow (Saturday) at 2:45 p.m. The men’s first division squad will take on Bayside at 1 p.m. They are in second place after downing Castaway 23-8 last Saturday. They will take on SFU prior to the men’s games at 11:30 a.m. In other women’s action, United Rugby Club won by default over the University of Victoria while the Velox Valkyries slammed SFU 67-0. Metro to study reopening speedway in park Proposal would bring car racing back to Campbell Valley Jeff Nagel Black Press
The dream of car racing fans to reopen the long-closed Langley Speedway in Campbell Valley Regional Park will at least get to the starting line. Metro Vancouver’s environment and parks committee voted to refer the controversial proposal to staff to report back on feasibility and what process might be used if Metro’s board decides to advance it to public consultation. The idea is expected to face heavy opposition from horse riders who frequent the park, as well as other users and residential neighbours. Four Metro directors voted against the motion, citing concerns racing wouldn’t be compatible with quiet nature

Jones said Metro got 10 per cent of all speedway revenues when it was open and a similar revenue-sharing agreement in the future could help fund regional parks. He envisions 10 to 14 race days a year, while concerts, car shows and other outdoor events could use the venue at other times. Jones said the existing 1,000 parking stalls at the track would be mainly for VIPs and the disabled, while most other racegoers would be expected to walk, bike or take a shuttle. Metro directors predict there will be strong opinions for and against reopening the track, particularly from motor sport fans and horse owners, if the proposal makes it to public consultations.

Langley’s Waterstone to release next phase
Appealing to the downsizing market As the baby boomers get older, many of them are looking to find a singlestorey home that they can lock up and leave when they decide to go away for awhile. The newest phase at Langley’s Waterstone, called Esplanade, has been catering to downsizers with spacious floorplans and a vibrant community feel. “These are the largest ever floorplans offered at Waterstone,” says Scott Brown of Colliers International. “It’s also the first lofted product in the area. That loft gives you 100 square feet of extra living space.” Along with that extra space, the homes with lofts will have 14-foot
ceilings. Brown notes that it can be hard for downsizers to move from a larger single-family home to a small condominium, especially when they’ve been there for many years and possibly raised a family. “There’s an emotional connection to your home,” he says. One of the things that he has found downsizing buyers asking for is storage. People accumulate plenty of possessions over the years, and sometimes aren’t ready to part with all of it quite yet. For more information about Esplanade, visit waterstoneliving.ca or call 604-530-5399.
matching backsplash. Most include a his-and-hers vanity, which is another one of those convenient details. Located in the charming Semiahmoo neighbourhood, residents will find everything they can possibly imagine on their doorstep. From dining at one of the delicious local restaurants to shopping at nearby Semiahmoo Shopping Centre, Morgan Crossing or Grandview Corners, nothing is out of reach. Leisure and recreation is also close by, with parks, pools, arenas and clubs in the neighbourhood, as well as White Rock beach. If it’s a bit of
culture you’re looking for, you’ll find an art gallery, theatre and museum just minutes away. On-site, homeowners at Adagio will find a residents lounge with chef ’s demonstration kitchen, double-sided fireplace, televisions, pool table and a large garden and patio area. There is also a fitness centre with a steam room. “The response so far has been extremely overwhelming,” West says. “There’s nothing like this in the area.” Homes at Adagio start at $288,800. For more information, visit www. AdagioByBoffo.ca or call 604-531-6659.
Attention to detail
Boffo brings unique condo project to South Surrey By Kerry Vital
Boffo Developments Ltd. is bringing hotel-style sophistication to South Surrey with its newest development, Adagio. With a variety of floorplans and amazing features, there are plenty of things that set the project apart. “The smallest details can make a difference,” says Boffo Marketing and Sales Director Karen West. “Boffo is known for its obsession with the details.” Among those details include an amazing community courtyard with trees, paths and seating areas. “That courtyard will be sensational,” West says. “It’s a great communal living space.” The first phase of 50 condominum homes is currently selling, with buyers able to take possession before Christmas. The one-bedroom and den, twobedroom and den and three-bedroom homes are spacious and inviting, with nine-foot ceilings (up to 15 feet on the top floor), expansive windows, and large terraces and patios that are perfect for entertaining. Boffo is known for high-quality design, but one room in the home really draws people in. “Our kitchens are really outstanding,” West says, adding “They are built for the serious chef.” That’s not an exaggeration. The natural granite or quartz slab countertops are matched with a complementary backsplash. The under-cabinet and recessed lighting
