Cancer patient sweet on soursop
Arlene Jongbloets Free Press
There’s an unusual
new fruit in the SaveOn-Foods produce section that has store
employee Judy Linnell very excited. It’s called soursop and it was brought in recently at Linnell’s request. She has been battling cancer for more than a year and a friend told her about soursop and its claims as a cancerfighter. “I don’t like medication and wanted to try something natural. I’ve got nothing to lose.” The large, pulpy fruit has a green prickly shell, and Linnell says it has a texture similar to
pineapple but it doesn’t have much taste. She plans to puree and freeze the fruit and add it to everything she cooks. Soursop is native to Mexico, Cuba, Central America, the Caribbean and northern South America where its used in a variety of ways, such as in beverages and frozen treats and desserts.

Red tape eliminated to encourage exploration Minister of Energy, Mines and Natural Gas Rich Coleman recently announced a package of regulatory changes designed to cut red tape and make exploration and mining more efficient in British Columbia. The package includes: • A new policy so industry can apply for a multi-year area-based permit. This will mean industry can avoid having to apply for multiple permits when working in the same exploration area. • On Jan. 28, a new electronic application system was announced by Premier Christy Clark at the Mineral Exploration Roundup 2013. On Feb. 1, the provincial government shifted to the new system for natural resource-related projects in B.C. The first electronic application
to be added to the new system will be a Notice of Work application. • In the coming months, the province will also finalize a review of the existing mineral and coal-land reserves. More than
50,000 hectares of land have already been made available for exploration as a result of this review. These changes will be implemented over the coming months. Once completed, they
will provide mineral exploration and mining companies with new tools to conduct business more efficiently and eliminate red tape and unnecessary administration. A 24new Unitonline appli-

Parents Helping Parents underway at CFEC
Parents Helping Parents is a free dropin supportive group for parents/caregivers who are parenting children with complex developmental behavioural conditions (CDBC). CDBC is a term used to describe challenges that may affect an individual in multiple areas of functioning, such as learning and development, mental health and behaviour, and adaptive and social skills. Some examples of CDBC are fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism. This parent group also offers support in connecting parents to appropriate resources in and outside the community, help with getting referrals to specialists, help filling out the paperwork to get the referrals, educational presentations on a large variety of subjects, and connecting parents with other parents living with similar challenges. This is a safe, confidential group that respects each individual’s needs. The next meeting is on May 1 and runs

Community hall getting a new roof After approaching McCrea and learning the community hall roof needed replacing, Barnett said she encouraged the community club to fill out an application. Noting it is tough for a community raising money all the time, Barnett said she was pleased to be able to present a cheque to the community club for the project. She added it would be nice to see the return of events, such as the regatta and the outhouse races, which have been a big part of the spirit of the community. McCrea said the community is most grateful for Barnett’s continued support. She explained the community hall will
see a facelift beginning in May and it should be completed by September, weather permitting.
The $22,000 provincial funds, together with the $17,300 grant from Western Economic Diversification Canada
received earlier this year, will also help refinish the logs and get some foundation repairs done.

By Monika Paterson Representatives of the Lac la Hache Volunteer Fire Department, the community club, Cariboo Regional District chair Al Richmond and community members showed up at the community hall on April 13 for the cheque presentation. Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett gave a $22,000 cheque to Lac la Hache Community Club treasurer Jeanette McCrea. The money will help replace the roof on the Lac la Hache Community Hall. Barnett said Lac la Hache has a great spirit and an incredibly rich history. Noting the hall was built in 1936 and is in good shape, she added it needs to be preserved.

CaribooRadio.Com is happy to announce… …that the morning show starts at 6:am “Live” with Glen Tanner.
WEEK OF APRIL 21 TO APRIL 27, 2013
ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, don’t be pushy with authority figures because such an attitude is not in your best interest. Better to put on the charm and let them see your softer side. TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, avoid getting involved in a family spat unless someone seeks your advice. Let your relatives work things out on their own; only offer your thoughts when prompted. GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, you might run into a snag with your spouse or partner over shared finances. Rather than settle issues this week, you’re better off waiting a few days. CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, even if the people around you are feeling tense and touchy, you have an innate way of making them feel at ease. Humor and compassion are two great traits. LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, you might need to make travel plans for a work trip in the coming month. Embrace the opportunity to benefit your career, but have a little fun when you’re away. VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, now is not the time to talk about shared expenses or the division of labor in a relationship. You’ll only be starting an argument, and you do not need that right now. LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 Staying neutral is the best way to go this week, Libra. Avoid any knee-jerk reactions and practice your poker face. There are some opportunities for fun on Thursday. SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, demonstrate grace under pressure at work this week, even if you feel tempted to lash out at others. Take the high road and you will be rewarded.

SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, the perfect opportunity for a night out with friends presents itself this week. This could be the ideal way to unwind, so enjoy your night out with friends. CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, although it seems like everyone is tense, you feel free as a bird. That could be because you have worked hard to free up time to get away.
HOW TO PLAY: Fill in the grid so that every row, every column and every 3x3 box contains the numbers 1 through 9 only once. Each 3x3 box is outlined with a darker line. You already have a few numbers to get you started. Remember: You must not repeat the numbers 1 through 9 in the same line, column or 3x3 box.
AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, conversations with others may not flow smoothly, and you may have to come up with a way to reword what you’re trying to get across. Stick with it. PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, though you’re praised for your marvelous imagination and sense of whimsy, you also know when to get down to business.

Canada’s new polymer notes are durable
Canada’s new polymer bank notes are easy to verify, remarkably durable and extremely low maintenance, and according to the Bank of Canada, when handled properly, they will last a very long time. Longer-lasting Canada’s new polymer bank notes will last at least two-and-a-half times longer than paper notes. To ensure they last as long as possible, they should be handled properly. For example, avoid creasing, crumpling, or stapling them, but if a note becomes creased or crumpled, flatten it by applying pressure or curling it in your hand.
Tougher The new series of bank notes was rigorously tested in laboratories to check their durability in varying mechanical, chemical and tempera-
ture conditions, and they performed very well. While polymer notes are strong and it’s hard to start a tear, if they become nicked, a tear can spread easily. Torn
“Don’t Dither, Call Diether”
notes can be repaired with tape and used again, but once returned to the Bank of Canada, they will be removed from circulation.
Cleaner If you spill something on your polymer notes, do not worry. They are very resistant to moisture and
staining, so if they do get soiled (say you accidentally knock over your coffee on them), the notes easily wipe clean with a damp cloth.
