There was great celebration at College of the Rockies’ campus in Cranbrook on Thursday as president Nick Rubidge announced the institution’s top placing in an international survey. A study conducted last fall by the International Graduate Insight Group called the Inter-

national Student Barometer found that the College of the Rockies is the best institution for international students in Canada, and the second best in the world. “This is an absolutely amazing achievement,” said Dr. Rubidge. “There are people walking around here today like dogs with two tails.”

The East Kootenay will soon have its first demonstration Food Forest at Clear Sky Centre in Bull River. Planting of this one acre system begins this April, and will be combined with a residential training program for how to set up and develop your own food forest. “At Clear Sky, we are so excited to be finally putting food forest agriculture into action, on the ground, here in the East Kootenay,” said Cara Conroy-Low, Farm Manager at Clear Sky Centre. Conroy-Low added that the food forest residential training workshop from April 20 to May 5, 2013, is a good opportunity to get involved and to learn directly from food forest experts. Clear Sky Centre got funding from the British Columbia Agroforestry Industry Development Initiative (AIDI) to be able to implement the one acre demonstration project. alternative to mainstream agriculture systems through a fortunate string of events. In 2008, while looking for a crop to grow on the agricultural portion of the centre’s land in Bull River, they met Richard Walker, one of Canada’s pioneers of food forest agriculture. Since then, Richard has taught two-day intensive food forest workshops at Clear Sky Centre every year. Leslie Lowe, a landscape architect and native plant specialist, is also collaborating on the food forest project. A Food Forest is a dynamic, ecosystem approach to growing food, medicine and other yields. They are resilient, diverse systems that have the potential to produce harvests from snow melt to snow fall each year. Through the vertical stacking of multiple layers of useful plants, increased and more diverse food per square foot can be harvested, but in a thoroughly sustainable manner. The wide variety of mostly perennial plant species in a food forest provides greater overall stability and resilience to pests, diseases and climate than a mono crop system. Because soil is undisturbed by tillage and improved year after year through the leaf and root drop of plants in the system, the soil food web is also healthier, resulting in higher quality, more nourishing food. Food Forests also invite community participation, learning and increased local food resilience. Michelle Heinz, Director of Operations at Clear Sky, said “the opportunity for local growers and ranchers to contribute to sustainable local food security through creating food

forest systems is clear, and food forest yields can also lead to the creation of local and innovative business opportunities.” Every food forest is unique, and the yields of each food forest depends on its design and plant selections, which are ultimately based on the needs and wants of the individuals, families or groups that will be developing, caring for and harvesting from the food forest. Yields could include all sorts of hardy varieties of fresh fruit, nuts, herbs, vegetables, medicinals, which can also be turned into value added products including herbal tinctures and teas, fruit wines and preserves. Clear Sky embarks on this project, breaking new ground starting April 20. For individuals or groups interested in participating or visiting for a morning educational session with Richard Walker in the field or to book a private consultation with him on your property, contact michelle@clearskycenter.org or 250-429-3929 for more details. Funding for the AIDI is provided by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada through the Canadian Agricultural Adaptation Program (CAAP). In British Columbia, the CAAP program is delivered by the Investment Agriculture Foundation of B.C. (IAF). The Province of British Columbia provides in-kind support to the AIDI. College success a community effort: president Continued from page 1 Patricia Bowron, the college’s executive director of international affairs and dean of instruction, said the results are a great honour. “It was great to be able to see how our results fared against some of the most well-regarded post-secondary institutions in Canada and abroad. We are really pleased that our students regard us so positively,” said Bowron. The Student Barometer is the world’s largest survey of student satisfaction. A total of 161,781 international students took the survey; 16,828 from Canada. There were 193 institutions involved in the study, 25 from Canada. In Canada, the University of British Columbia, the University of Alberta, Simon Fraser University, and the University of Toronto all took part. At the College of the Rockies, 105 of 140 international students took the survey, giving a 75 per cent response rate, the highest in the world. “We said to the students that it’s really im-

The high response simply showed that they are committed to the learning experience,” said Bowron. The survey gave the college a ranking in several different aspects of the international students’ experience. College of the Rockies is number one in Canada and number

one in the world in formal welcome and meeting staff, program organization and content, and finance and registration. It’s number one in Canada and number two in the world in student advisory and career advice, IT support, accommodation, and international office. It’s number one in Canada and number three in the world for catering, and

quality lectures and good teachers. “This is a community effort. We can’t hit these sorts of numbers without the support and involvement of every aspect of the institution and the community at large,” said Dr. Rubidge. “We can’t say it was just one area. Every part of the community contributed to it. The whole community comes out tops. It’s fabulous.” Being a small college helps College of the Rockies provide better

service for international students, he went on. “We always talk about the benefits of being a small institution and how we can provide more personalized service.” Donna Kraus-Hagerman, executive director of college relations and marketing, said the survey didn’t reach to domestic students. “I believe our domestic students feel this

way as well. I would assume it speaks to the whole student body,” she said. Bowron said the college now hopes to work on the categories where it wasn’t at the top in the world. “The whole idea of collecting this data is to help us grow and learn. While this is a celebration, it’s important that we get to work to dig into the data and see

what areas we need to grow and learn in,” she said. Between May 2012 and March 2013, 186 international students were educated at College of the Rockies, about six per cent of the student body. Those students came from more than 30 different countries, including China, Japan, India, Kenya, Ecuador and Taiwan.

Open air burning banned inside Cranbrook, city reminds Submit ted

The return of the spring weather brings the risk of fires back into the minds of many people, including the staff of the Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services department. Open air burning requirements, campfires, burning yard waste and the potential threat of wildfires are important issues that Fire and Emergency Services are working to educate residents about. “Burning of yard waste and other household materials anytime is not allowed under the City’s Fire Services Bylaw,” said Wayne

Price, Director of Fire & Emergency Services. “Under the Bylaw, the only open air burning allowed is barbeques, small cooking or campfires using appropriate fire pits, chimneys or approved stoves or eliminating fire hazards and fire training by the department itself.” Anyone having a campfire on their property must ensure that it is at least 10 feet away from any combustible material and buildings. Meantime, the open air burning of land clearing debris is allowed, however can

only be completed between November 1 and April 30 and requires a permit from the Director of Fire & Emergency Services. Also, as the summer wears on, the wildfire risk in and around the City of Cranbrook is nearly certain to increase. “It is crucial for property owners to take a serious look around for items: debris, yard waste and the like and remove them,” said Price. “Residents need to take responsibility for fire-proofing their properties, especially those around the perimeter of the city. If you see smoke

on your property, it can often be too late to take preventative measures to protect your property.” On March 27, Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services responded to an out-of-control grass fire below the Gold Creek store in Area C. The fire was quickly controlled and resulted in minimal property loss. Residents are encouraged to review the City of Cranbrook Fire Services Bylaw 3676, 2010. Copies are available for information at City Hall, at the Fire Hall or on the City website – www.cranbrook.ca.

quired in a policing situation. Benson said Mountainview is one of the only breeders of Canadian horses in this part of the country; most are in Quebec. “They were the first horses to set foot on Canadian soil,” she said. The horses came across from Europe from the stock of King Louis XIV in the 17th century. From that time they adapted to Canada’s harsh winters and working conditions. Benson said that growing up in the harsh climate made it a versatile horse with the ability to eat almost anything growing on the ground. They were used as work horses, war horses, race horses and breeding horses. Then, as tractors and equipment

took the farming world away from horse labour, the numbers of the horses dwindled down into the hundreds. It was only through efforts by breeders who saw the unique qualities of the horse that the pure bred horse is still around. Benson said the business began in 1999, from foals, which they raised to be breeder horses. One of those horses is Mountainview Jackson Minx, one of Benson’s first Canadian horses, which she raised from a foal. At this time of year, young foals are just starting to get their legs. The horses are friendly and come to people when they are nearby. They are one of the few breeds developed in Canada. For more information, go to www.mountainviewcanadians.com.

The Columbia Basin Environmental Education Network (CBEEN) announced this week it is opening for spring bookings for its popular Wild Voices for Kids (WVFK) environmental and heritage education program on Earth Day. This comes after reaching its $25,000 fundraising target that it set in March, thanks to several funders who stepped forward, including major donors Canadian Pacific and the Regional District of East Kootenay. “This funding could not have come at a better time,” said Duncan Whittick, CBEEN’s Executive Director. “It will allow us to meet the growing demand by teachers and be able to provide quality environmental education programs for up to 7,000 more students during the upcoming spring field trip season.” CBEEN currently offers 133 different programs by 79 community educators. NDP vows forestry spending Tom Fletcher and Barry Coulter

NDP leader Adrian Dix released his party’s forestry platform in Prince George Monday, including a pledge to double the number of trees planted on Crown land. Dix also promised to increase spending on forest inventory research and establish a “jobs protection commissioner” to manage the reduction in timber supply that is expected across Interior areas depleted by beetle infestation. Kootenay East NDP candidate Norma Blissett praised leader Adrian Dix’s announcement Monday that an NDP government would invest money in the B.C. forests. “B.C.’s forests represent a trillion-dollar

asset that has been badly mismanaged by the B.C. Liberals for more than a decade,” said Blissett. “The volume of raw logs exported has doubled since 2009, and since 2001 the BC Forest Service has been cut by over 1,000 positions — one quarter of its workforce — meaning fewer boots on the ground to manage B.C.’s greatest resource.” Blissett said in a release that the party’s five-point plan will: • invest in skills training to address the critical shortage of skilled workers in the forest sector as part of a broader skills training plan; • implement a fiveyear forest health plan that will increase funding by $400 million over the next five years; • provide support for

B.C. Liberals vow income tax freeze Tom Fletcher Black Press

The B.C. Liberal Party released its election platform Monday, promising to freeze personal income tax rates for five years and return to its plan to eliminate small business income tax. Premier Christy Clark released the platform at a campaign event in Vancouver. The B.C. Liberals’ personal tax freeze does not extend to income above $150,000, which was subject to a 2.1 per cent increase in the government’s February budget. That increase was budgeted to last only two years before returning to the current 14.7 per cent rate. The NDP has proposed to raise the rate on income above $150,000 a year to 19 per cent, permanently. The B.C. Liberals had earlier planned to eliminate income tax for small businesses with annual revenues of $500,000 or less. But faced with deficits after the 2008-09 financial crisis and the rejection of the harmonized sales tax, the government decided in 2012 to hold the small business tax rate at 2.5 per cent until the province’s

financial picture improved. The party’s new plan is more modest, trimming the small business rate by half a point in 2015 and another half point by 2017. The B.C. Liberal platform leans heavily on long-term debt repayment for government, BC Ferries and BC Hydro using liquefied natural gas export revenues. Clark said a conservative scenario of two large LNG export facilities and three smaller ones could provide enough revenue to pay off the province’s debt in 15 years. The NDP has decided on a staged release of policies, which started in Prince George Monday with promises for new investment in reforestation. Other highlights of the B.C. Liberal platform include: • $3 million a year to upgrade rest stops and visitor centres around B.C. • a B.C. film promotion office in Los Angeles • funds to develop an aerospace and defence contractor industry • a five-year freeze of the carbon tax, previously announced

industry-led efforts to identify new global markets and grow forest product exports; • use B.C. logs to create BC jobs, working with stakeholders to reduce raw log exports and create more value-added forestry jobs in B.C.; • establish a Jobs Protection Commissioner to support communities in transition due to the impacts of the pine beetle infestation. “As a former forester, I am happy to see my party presenting a fivepoint plan to revitalize the forest industry in B.C.,” Blissett said. “It’s beyond time for investment in our forests to happen.” Dix said if the NDP form a government after the May 14 election, forest spending will increase by $30 million in the first year, with further increases up to $100 million beyond current spending over five years. B.C. Liberal candidate for Kootenay East Bill Bennett said the NDP forestry plan promises action but offers no specifics. “NDP forestry critic Norm Macdonald has said the public would have to wait until after the election to learn the NDP plan,” Bennett said. “Our commitment to the forest industry is upfront and the results are obvious,” Bennett said in a release. “Canfor just made a decision to invest $40 million in the Elko sawmill, a clear sign that they have confidence in the future. Good news for workers and their families here. In 2012, 56,400 workers were employed in the B.C. forest sector, up from 53,400 in 2011.” Dix said the federal and provincial governments have done a good job increasing lumber exports to China, and as premier he would continue the trade missions and marketing efforts that have led to the growth. Bennett said the Liberal government “recognized almost a decade ago that B.C. is too dependent on the U.S. market and we started investing in the development of the Chinese market. Since then, our exports of softwood lumber to China has risen by over 400 per cent.”

Looking at the issues: Post-secondary education One of a series comparing platforms on an issue-by-issue basis

Tom Fletcher Black Press

Parties in the May 14 B.C. election have highlighted their commitments to improve post-secondary skills training. The province faces a wave of baby boomer retirements, shortages in trades and industrial jobs, an increase in temporary foreign workers and under-employment of some university graduates. Trades and apprenticeship training is a major point of dispute. The B.C. Liberal-created Industry Trade Authority has increased apprentices from 16,000 in 2001 to 34,000, but the NDP counters that percentage completion rates have declined. Independent Contractors and Businesses Association president Phil Hochstein argues that with many more young people in the apprenticeship system, the number of graduates is at a record level. Platform highlights: • The B.C. NDP’s biggest commitment is $100 million for a post-secondary stu-

NDP leader Adrian Dix also promises $40 million new investment for skills training, to “increase apprenticeship training spaces, shorten completion times and improve completion rates.” The NDP notes that while the B.C. Liberal government touts its jobs plan in ads, its February budget projects a $42 million cut to the advanced education ministry over three years. • The B.C. Liberals highlight a $75 million

commitment for upgrading training facilities and equipment, on top of the $500 million annual skills training budget. The B.C. Liberals emphasize plans to expand vocational training in high schools, and encourage partnerships between high schools and employers. Their platform also promises to develop “relevant training programs” for B.C. residents to work in the LNG industry. • The B.C. Conservatives promise to “increase training and apprenticeships in the trades and technical

sector,” but don’t specify how. They also promise to increase on-line learning capabilities in colleges and technical institutes, and give qualified B.C. students priority for admission to the province’s post-secondary institutions. • The B.C. Green Party promises to eliminate interest on student debt over five years, “immediately” cut tuition by 20 per cent, create a grant program for low-income students, increase core funding for colleges and universities by $200 million and provide training for laid-off workers.

Conservative candidate enters race in Columbia River-Revelstoke CAROLYN G RAN T Daily Bulletin

What’s driving Earl Olsen to enter the political arena for the first time is a belief that the people of Columbia River-Revelstoke need more of a choice in the coming provincial election. “I’ve never run for anything, not even student council,” Olsen said. “What draws me is moving to the valley (Fairmont Hot Springs) in 2006, coming from Alberta which was booming, and talking to a lot of folks. I could see what was happening. Kids are leaving because they can’t have a career here. It’s one of the best, most beautiful parts of the world, but we can’t keep our kids here. There has to be anoth-

er way rather than spending more money, taxing more people.” Olsen says he chose the relatively new party, the Conservative Party of BC because he appreciates their platform of lower taxes, careful spending and core values. “The Conservatives value representatives who represent their constituents first and the Party second. “I think the Conservative Party offers the best option for the future. I don’t think that anyone needs ten more years of the Liberals or NDP.” When asked about splitting the right-leaning vote away from the BC Liberals, Olsen says that’s not a concern for him. “We don’t have a

two-party system. Votes get split all the time. We’re offering people a chance to make a choice, a chance to choose a government that is focused on the issues, focused on providing solutions that don’t involve jacking taxes.”

Women in leadership in the Church

I

have had a number of conversations in the past few months about the place of women as leaders in the church. That was renewed again when Pope Francis was elected. People asked if I thought he might begin to allow women to be priests. My short answer is “No.” The church has had a long and troubled history when it comes to the place of women in leadership. It’s not just the Roman Catholic Church. Conservative and fundamentalist churches also forbid women from exercising any form of leadership in the church. Even in my own tradition, just last November the Church of England voted against allowing women to be bishops. It was only in 1992 that the Church of England permitted women to become priests. In Canada, women were finally ordained as priests only 35 years ago, and the first woman was ordained a bishop in 1993. There are many different reasons for this opposition to women as leaders in the church. Often, those who oppose it say they do so because “the Bible forbids it.” They see it as being somehow unfaithful to God. Truth be told, some passages in the Bible do seem to prohibit women exercising leadership. 1 Corinthians 14 says clearly that “women should be silent in the churches ... for it is shameful for a woman to speak in church.” 1 Timothy 2 also says “I permit no woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she is to keep silent.” The difficulty is that those passages

have to be read in the cultural context of the time. I don’t believe them to be a command from God for all ages. These words were written in a cultural climate which differed sharply in how it understood the relationship between men and women, and their corresponding roles. After all, 2 Timothy also says that women are “silly women, overwhelmed by their sins and swayed by all kinds of desires, who are always being Rev. Yme instructed and can never arWoensdregt rive at a knowledge of the truth” (2 Timothy 3). I don’t know a single man who actually believes that! But the more telling thing is that the Bible does not speak with a single voice in this matter. There are different opinions in this library of books we call the Bible. In Acts 9, Luke calls Tabitha a “female disciple.” He uses the feminine form of the exact same word with which he describes all the other (male) disciples. As far as Luke is concerned, Tabitha is fully equal to the other (male) disciples. What makes this even more noteworthy is that this is the only time in the whole of the New Testament that this word for “female disciple” is used. Paul also often sends his blessings to women whom he identifies as fellow workers in the church. He mentions Phoebe, a deacon in the church, in Romans 16. Lydia is also mentioned in Acts 16 as a woman who provided important help to Paul. What seals the deal for me, though, are the stories of Junia and the women at the

tomb that first Easter. Junia is mentioned in Romans 16, along with Andronicus, as having been in prison with Paul; “they are prominent among the apostles.” Now the interesting story about Junia is that when the King James Bible was being translated into English in the early 17th century, the translators came across the Greek name which is clearly a woman’s name. But they thought it would be impossible for Paul to mention a woman as having been great among the apostles. That can’t be. So what did these translators do? They simply changed the name — from Junia to Junius, the name of a man. Here’s a clear example that rather than being faithful to the Bible, they allowed the presuppositions of their day to blind them to the possibility of a woman actually being in leadership. A final example is found at the end of Matthew’s story. The first ones who would proclaim the good news that Jesus was raised from the dead — were the women. They came to the tomb, only to find it empty. They were commissioned to tell the others. It is clear to me that the Bible indicates there ought to be an equality among men and women in using the gifts God has given us to proclaim the good news of God’s love for the world. In God’s economy, all the distinctions which we seem to love to make are simply wiped out. Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook.

et’s take a little trip, shall we? We’ll start at Slaterville, named for the Slater brothers who lived and operated a lumber mill there. The general area was originally and unofficially called “Little Scotland” for a few years but eventually there were enough Slaters living there that Slaterville seemed a logical choice. Starting there is important, as you will see. We’ll travel across the tracks, up Van Horne Street and turn left on 3rd Avenue. That’s not its real name. Its real name is Watt Avenue, named for pioneer Dr. Hugh Watt of Fort Steele. He was very angry that the Canadian Pacific Railway bypassed Fort Steele and came through Cranbrook so the naming of an avenue in his honour is ironic — but that’s a trip for another day. In the original Cranbrook survey map there was neither a single street nor avenue with a number. They were all given proper names, some of them for people who lived in the area and were deemed important, i.e. Baker Street; some of them for people of noble rank, i.e. Victoria Avenue; some of them for CPR dignitaries, i.e. Van Horne; and some of them for people who may have been any of the aforementioned but of whom little is now recalled (no examples come to mind). The original street names served the population well until 1948, when the business community and city council deemed it necessary to change the names to numbers because they apparently believed tourists were not all that bright. That is to say, not clever enough to follow direc-

“It’s not so much which road you take, as how you take it.” – Charles De Lint – photo montage by Cameron tions involving streets with names instead of numbers. Sure, it works in other places but our tourists are different. So saying, they discarded the street names and, in fact, a few years after that, changed all the house numbers on the streets by decreasing them by 100, which may or may not have helped the supposedly confused tourists but for a time certainly made the Cranbrook residents of the day appear brainless when they could neither recall the number of their street nor their house address. Still, some names avoided the axe: Baker Street for instance (presumably because it would have become “0” Street in the new system), along with Victoria Avenue, Van Horne Street, Kootenay Street, Cranbrook Street and a few others. It is interesting to note that a few years ago new street signs were placed throughout the Baker Hill district with both the numeric street value and the original given name. A nice touch, although they stopped at 8th (Hanson) Avenue, leaving the equally old and originally well-named avenues between 7th and 1st Avenues remaining as numbers only. Now, no one would accuse the heritageminded-fundraising-signplacement people of any

purposeful slight by way of distinction. In the old days it may have given rise to accusations of Baker Hill snobbery, but that was long ago and in this day and age it should be a simple matter for the good folk of Norbury and Garden and Burwell Avenues to coexist with the good folk of 7th and 6th and 5th Avenues, no matter what their streets are named. If whomsoever living down on the bottom lands wants their fancy street names back, then they can hitch up to the heritage train and put up the signs. Fair enough. Wattsville Road remained unchanged name-wise and that’s where we’re heading. On this trip we’ll go south along Watt Avenue for three blocks and then turn right on Wattsville Road. It runs through Wattsville, roughly the flat ground between 3rd Avenue and Elizabeth Lake. Wattsville is not named for Dr. Hugh Watt. Wattsville is so named because the road running through it leads to Wattsburg, nine miles out of town. Wattsburg is no longer there. Wattsburg eventually became Lumberton. Lumberton is no longer there. The original road ran only to Wattsburg and points in between. The road west to Moyie ran a different route which is why the

Wattsville road was not named the “Moyie Road”. “Wattsville” Road was actually named “Wattsburg” Road for many years, but Wattsburg gradually disappeared and then B.C. Spruce Mills took control of the former townsite in 1921 and renamed it Lumberton, but by then what would have become the “Lumberton Road” was actually known as “The Moyie Road,” or “The West Highway.” In short, the satellite community between Cranbrook and the marsh gradually became Wattsville and the road running through it became the Wattsville Road. This is a fun and fact-filled little trip, isn’t it? Keep your windows up, it’s chilly out there. Truth be told, the general area of Wattsville was officially known as the “South Ward” because, at one time, the city fathers thought it might be a good idea to divide the town into “wards” just like big cities did. The concept never went very far but they did manage to designate a single “ward”, namely that of the south. It is doubtful that anyone would have known much about it even then but for the construction of the “South Ward School.” It closed in the early 1930s, the Boy Scouts later claimed it as their meeting hall and the whole “south ward” business pretty much disappeared. Wattsville, the Wattsville Road and the nearby town of Wattsburg were named (more or less) for Albert Edward Watts and if you’re wondering why he whipped the young fellow clutching desperately to the flagpole then you are something akin to psychic because that part of the trip will not come up until next week. As far as this part of this trip along the Wattsburg, Wattsville, South Ward, Wattsburg, Lumberton, Moyie, West Highway #3 Road, the bus stops here. janusthenandnow@shaw.ca

Jon Klemm steps away from coaching with Spokane Chiefs TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor

Spokane Chiefs assistant coach Jon Klemm has stepped away from his position with the team, citing family reasons, according to a team press release. Klemm, a Cranbrook native who has been with the Chiefs for the last four years, will return to Dallas upon getting married this summer. His four teenage children live in Chicago. “I will get more opportunities to see my kids and see my son play hockey,” said Klemm in a press release. “I haven’t seen him play in three years. This move gives me flexibility in the winter months.” Klemm is a former professional hockey player with an 18-year career in the AHL and NHL and is a two-time Stanley Cup champion. The defenceman retired in 2009 and promptly joined his former major-junior club as an assistant coach. “This was a great experience,” said Klemm.

“When you’re a player and play as long as I did, to make the transition to coaching is an eye opener. As a player, you’re at the rink a few hours a day and you don’t realize the work that goes into it. I enjoyed my time here and learned a lot. “It was a lot of fun to be a part of and see these kids grow, improve and get better. To be around the players and see them get to the next level was great.” In his four-year tenure as assistant coach, the Chiefs have had a record of 175-91-14-8, alongside head coach Don Nachbaur for the last three years, and former bench boss Hardy Sauter in his first season. “I’m sad to see Jon go,” said Nachbaur. “I want to personally thank him for all the hard work with our team. He made individuals better people and players and I’m going to miss him for that. He helped develop our kids on a daily basis.” Chiefs general man-

ager Tim Speltz shared the same sentiment. “It has been a pleasure to work with Jon both as a player and now a coach. He has been fantastic for our organization. We understand and respect his decision to move and be more available to his family.” A trio of players under Klemm’s tutelage—Jared Spurgeon, Jared Cowen and Tyler Johnson—have advanced from their major-junior careers into the professional ranks with NHL clubs. Klemm recalls the playoff run in 2011 as one of the biggest moments of his coaching stint with the club, which ended with a third-round loss to the Portland Winterhawks. “We got the best out of that group,” Klemm said. “…We just couldn’t get over one little hill. That situation is what makes the game so great, that fine line between winning and losing. I thought we were successful; just fell a little short in the end.

Derek Boyle defeated Aaron Armstrong in the title bout at the first Battle for the Border MMA event at Western Financial Place in September. Another MMA event will happen on June 1st, as Battle for the Border 2: Redemption, will entertain the city.

MMA event set for June TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor

Fight night is back. A date has been set for Cranbrook’s next MMA event—Battle for the Border 2: Redemption—and tickets go on sale this Friday at Western Financial Place box office. Following the success from Cranbrook’s first MMA bout last September, H&M Productions has booked Saturday, June 1st, for a rematch of B.C.-based fighters against a field of Albertan challengers. Organizers hope to have at least 10 fights on the card, said Isaac Hockley of H&M Productions—one of which could be a female bout. Hockley and his business partner, Jody McInnes, knew right

away they wanted to put on another show after their successful debut with Battle for the Border last fall. “As soon as it was finished,” said Hockley. “We didn’t run into any problems, the way the city council spoke of it after the fight night— they spoke nothing but good things about it, so that was a big boost for us, along with the support from the community. “The only thing that we weren’t happy about, was the outcome of the fights.” The Albertan MMA challengers had a successful evening, with only three of B.C.’s fighters coming out on top of their bouts. This time around, quite a few of the fight-

ers representing B.C. are coming right out of Cranbrook, Kimberley and the surrounding region, according to Hockley. On the pro card, Cranbrook will be represented by Sheldon Doll, who will be pitted against Dan Walders, while Brandon MacArthur is still searching for an opponent. Kimberley resident Rob Roy will face Derek Clark, while Fernie native Shone Cotrill needs an opponent. On the amateur card, Cranbrook will be represented by Adam Wills, who is challenging Connor Derry, while Kimberley will be represented by Jesse Cuthill, who is facing Tom O’Connor. Local fighters Mike

Seguin, John McKinnon and Donovan Hack are also hoping to find opponents to meet in the cage. Headlining the event is Sparwood native Derek Boyle, who had the title bout last time around with a unanimous decision over Aaron Armstrong. Boyle, with a record of 9-5 will be fighting Eben Kaneshiro, who is 14-9 and has nine more fights under his belt. Hockley said he’s also been in contact with Charmaine Tweet and hopes to feature a fight with her. Tweet, based out of Regina, is a female MMA fighter who has been in the cage with Rhonda Rousey, the reigning female UFC Bantamweight champion.

Vaillancourt retires from Canadian hockey team DONNA SPENCER Canadian Press

Sarah Vaillancourt shed tears many times over the last year thinking that her injuries were forcing her into retirement from the Canadian women’s hockey team. The two-time Olympic gold medallist was able to announce her retirement Thursday with more satisfaction than sadness. She represented Canada one

last time at the world championship earlier this month in Ottawa. “It was a perfect opportunity for me to really close the deal and enjoy my teammates one last time,” Vaillancourt told The Canadian Press from her hometown of Sherbrooke, Que. “It was perfect closure for me.” Vaillancourt won Olympic gold with Canada in 2006 and 2010. The 27-year-old forward had 45 goals and 53 assists in 107 ca-

reer games with Canada. She appeared in six world championships and won gold in 2007. Vaillancourt’s game is skill and sandpaper. She has the vision and quick hands of a playmaker, but is also a burr under the saddle of the opposition. “She’s got a lot of skill and talent, but she also plays a real tough game,” Canadian head coach Dan Church said. “She’s very hard to play against.”

Reinhart, McDavid lead Canada 4-1 over Slovakia at U18 championship C anadian Press

SOCHI, Russia Connor McDavid of the Erie Otters scored and had two assists to lead Canada to a 4-1 win over Slovakia on Thursday at the IIHF under-18 world championship.

“We came out the way we wanted to. We were able to play with four lines throughout the whole game and it really work it down low for the majority of the game.” Sam Reinhart Slovakia’s David Soltes beat Canada goalie Spencer Martin of the Mississauga Steelheads to open the scoring at 3:11 of the first period. Nicholas Baptiste of the Sudbury Wolves tied it at 7:20 before McDavid’s power-play goal at 16:39 put Canada in front to stay. Captain Sam Reinhart of the Kootenay Ice scored midway through the third period and was named player of the game for the Canadian side. “We came out the

way we wanted to,” Reinhart said. “We were able to play with four lines throughout the whole game and really work it down low for the majority of the game.” Samuel Bennett-McDowell added an insurance goal for the Canadians, who outshot Slovakia 35-13. Canada next plays Germany on Saturday. The tournament is being played on two 2014 Olympic rinks. Canada will play the first round in Group B against Slovakia, Germany, Switzerland and Sweden at the 7,000seat Shayba Arena. The United States is looking for a fifth straight gold medal at the event. The Americans and host Russia are in Group A with Latvia, Finland and the Czech Republic at the 12,000seat Bolshoy Ice Dome. Many top players are unavailable to participate at the tournament because they’re still involved in playoffs with their junior clubs. The semifinals are on April 26 with the final on April 28. Canada won gold in 2003 and 2008 but then was out of the medals until it took bronze at last year’s event.

PGA golfer to donate $1,000 per birdie to Boston relief HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - James Driscoll hopes he makes lots of birdies the next two weeks, enough for him to help those hurting from the Boston Marathon bombings. Driscoll, born and raised in Massachusetts, has pledged $1,000 for each birdie he makes at the RBC Heritage this week and the Zurich Classic of New Orleans next week. He got off to a solid start Thursday in the opening round at Harbour Town Golf Links with four birdies - worth $4,000 - in his round of 3-over 74. “I’ll be happy to write a big check for this,” he said. Driscoll grew up in Brookline, Mass., and now lives in downtown Boston, two blocks from where the explosions took place. He had thought about going home for Patriots’ Day celebrations, but instead stayed in Florida to work on his game before coming here. The money raised is going to the Boston One Fund, an organization set up by Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick and Boston Mayor Tom Menino. Driscoll has appreciated the support shown by people everywhere for Boston and its citizens. He’s got no doubt the city will recover. “Boston people are strong and they’re for sure going to bounce back,” he said. Associated Press

Canada eyes big finish at world senior and mixed curling C anadian Press

FREDERICTON Canada’s hopes for a three-medal performance at the 2013 world senior and world mixed doubles curling championships took a significant step forward on Thursday. After some early struggles, Canada’s mixed doubles team of Robert Desjardins and Isabelle Neron of Saguenay, Que., moved to within a victory of locking up a tiebreaker berth with an 11-3 win over

South Korea’s Ahn JaeSung and Synn HyunHo. Desjardins and Neron take on China’s Yanlong Ma and Xinna Yu in Thursday’s late draw. A win there would set up a third-place tiebreaker with the Russian duo of Alexey Kamnev and Yana Nekrasova on Friday morning. Meanwhile, Rob Armitage’s senior men’s team from Red Deer, Alta. won a showdown of unbeaten teams, beating Swedenss Karl

Nordlund 5-2 to lock up a berth in Saturday’s semifinals. Later Thursday, Cathy King’s senior women’s team from St. Albert, Alta., tried to lock up first place and a spot in the semifinals with a victory over Austria’s Veronika Huber. Against the South Koreans, Desjardins and Neron set the tone early, taking four in the first end, and then scoring back-to-back deuces in the fifth and sixth ends. “We’ve been raising

When you make halfshots and the opponent makes perfect shots, there’s no way you’ll win. Now we’re making great shots and the opponents are making half-shots.” In the men’s game, Canada won its seventh straight and knocked the Swedes (8-1) from

the same star, an orange dwarf, and are next to each other — closer together than Earth and its neighbour Mars. The planets are slightly wider than Earth, but not too big. Kepler-62-e is a bit warm, like a Hawaiian world and Kepler-62-f is a bit chilly, more Alaskan, Borucki said. “This is the first one where I’m thinking ‘Huh, Kepler-62-f really might have life on it’,’’ said study co-author

David Charbonneau of Harvard. “This is a very important barrier that’s been crossed. Why wouldn’t it have life?’’ Both planets are tantalizing. The dozens of researchers who co-authored the study disagree on which one is better suited to life. Lisa Kaltenegger of the Max Planck Institute of Astronomy in Germany likes Kepler-62-3 more because it’s closer to the star and is warmer. She said it is probably “like Washington in May.’’ Pennsylvania State University professor James Kasting, who wasn’t part of the research, called the findings “a big discovery.’’ The planets are 1,200 light years away. A light year is almost 6 trillion miles (nearly 10 trillion kilometres). The planets circle a star that is 7 billion years old — about 2.5 billion years older than our sun. “If there’s life at all on those planets, it must be very advanced,’’ said Borucki.

WASHINGTON — NASA’s planet-hunting telescope has discovered two planets that seem like ideal places for some sort of life to flourish. They are just the right size and in just the right place near their star. The distant duo are the best candidates for habitable planets that astronomers have found so far, said William Borucki, the chief scientist for NASA’s Kepler telescope. The discoveries, published online Thursday in the journal Science, mark a milestone in the search for planets where life could exist. In the past when astronomers found exoplanets — planets outside our solar system — they have not fit all the criteria that would make them right for life. Many planets are not in the habitable zone — where it’s not too hot and not too cold for liquid water. And until now, the handful of planets astronomers found in that

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Your zest for living comes out, no matter what you say or do. Your spontaneity even becomes childlike, which allows for great conversations and many laughs. Start doing some research on a new, passionate interest. Tonight: Make your choices colorful and exciting. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Your instincts guide you, especially when dealing with a close family member. You could be put off by this person’s attitude or habits. Let it go, as this characteristic is just a small part of their personality. By late afternoon, you’ll start to perk up. Tonight: Celebrate the night. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You can be very charming to others, but do not coerce them into agreeing to something that they won’t enjoy, especially regarding weekend plans. Your upbeat attitude tends to break down barriers. Everyone wants a little bit of what you’ve got.

Tonight: You flirt! CANCER (June 21-July 22) Your moodiness allows you to become a victim of overindulging. Curb your spending, and stay within your budget. Choose restaurants that support your diet. Take better care of yourself. Others will start treating you with more respect as a result. Tonight: Accept an invitation. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You beam as you sense a change in the wind. Listen to what is being shared. A neighbor might have some interesting information to share with you. Know that there is a nugget of truth in what you are hearing. Invitations and requests come in. Tonight: Be around a crowd. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) If you’re feeling out of sorts, take some much-needed personal time. You might want to find a trusted friend or relative to reach out to. This person makes an excellent confidant. Stop judging others -- and yourself -- so much. Tonight: Excuse yourself from festivities. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

For Better or Worse

Wherever you are, you can be found networking away among the crowds. You could make a surprising connection that you will value even more than you might realize. Touch base with someone you often think of but perhaps don’t speak to. Tonight: Enjoy yourself. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Fatigue or negativity could be casting some darkness on your life. A partner will go out of his or her way to cheer you up. Express your appreciation, but try to eliminate an overwhelming issue. Speak to someone who can help you. Tonight: Stay sensitive to a close loved one. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Your mind opts to wander while you are left trying to be efficient. Share your thoughts in order to get some feedback. Afterward, you will be more present. Run your errands, and get as much done possible. A last-minute detail could slow you down. Tonight: Time to be impulsive. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) A close friend pleads his or her case. Listen and respond accord-

ingly. Allow more spontaneity into both your social and personal lives. You probably will enjoy yourself more once you relax. Life will be even more of an adventure! Tonight: Go along with a suggestion. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Others often challenge you. Though you don’t really care, you’ll listen to the criticism or issue and evaluate it in your time. This lack of an immediate response could trigger a negative reaction. You defuse naturally hidden agendas. Tonight: Only where people can be found. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You have a lot of ground to cover, both personally and professionally. Be realistic -- you might need to ask for help. Understand that a certain call might not be returned. Be discreet when dealing with a difficult person. Tonight: Unwind without a whole lot of people around. Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I have grown children from my first marriage. I now have a 7-year-old son from my second marriage, and we are home-schooling him. My older children, who all attended public school, aren’t terribly keen on this. One of them, “Jenny,” criticizes home-schooling and then gets into what she considers insufficient socialization. She says if her baby brother doesn’t turn out right, it’s because I deprived him of something. When she’s finished with that topic, she criticizes the condition of our 30-year-old house. Then she says my house is too cluttered, which I admit, but it’s fairly well organized, and I regularly donate old clothing and appliances. Jenny has offered to help me with the clutter, but I suspect that’s an excuse to throw away all of my things. Jenny’s latest complaint is that I’ve “changed” and she can no longer talk to me. We used to be able to talk about everything, and now Jenny feels that I bring up God too often. My faith has deepened, but I remind Jenny that I am still the mother I’ve always been, albeit older. But she has decided to cut off communication for an unspecified period of time, saying she “needs space.” Jenny has an illness that flares up periodically, and she takes steroids regularly. I’m concerned that this is affecting her behavior, making it more extreme. I suggested she speak with her doctor, but she insists the steroids aren’t a problem. I’m baffled and hurt. We used to have wonderful talks. Her little brother adores her, and it breaks my heart to think their relationship has been put on hold. Any advice? -- Upset Up North Dear Upset: You may be right about the steroids, but even so, you cannot force Jenny to address it. You need to back off a bit and let Jenny work through this herself. Send her a note saying you love her and miss her, but you will respect her decision and wait for her to get in touch. If nothing changes within, say, six months, you might consider asking one of your other grown children to act as an intermediary to find out whether more is going on and how you might be able to improve things. Dear Annie: My friend is going through a rough time with her family. She has resorted to self-harm. I am worried for her. She says she wants help, but she doesn’t want people to know she’s cutting. I respect this, so please tell me what to do. -- Helpless in Illinois Dear Helpless: Some people resort to cutting as a way to cope with intense emotional pain. The problem, of course, is that it’s not a useful way to manage pain. The cutting will create scars, she might accidentally cut too deeply, and if the cutting continues, it can become compulsive and addictive. Some people who cut also suffer from underlying depression or other mental health issues. You don’t say how old your friend is, but please encourage her to talk to a professional. This might mean confiding in her parents or other relatives, or a doctor, school counselor or teacher, or going to a nearby mental health clinic. This is not something that either of you should keep secret. Discussing her family problems will help, and a counselor can work with her to find more productive ways to deal with her emotional pain. Dear Annie: I don’t get why everyone feels they have to give hints to those guests who stay too late. Why not just say, “I loved our visit, but I have to get up early in the morning,” or “I’m having trouble staying awake”? If someone was rude enough to say, “If they’re going to be here all night, better make up a pallet on the floor,” that would be the last time we ever visited. -- Simi Valley, Calif. When tomorrow starts without us, and we are not there to see, If the sun should rise and find your eyes, all filled with tears for us. We wish so much you wouldn’t cry, though we know your hearts ache so. But remember it was for the best... it was our time to go. We know how much you love us... as much as we love you. And each time you’re thinking of us, we know you’ll miss us too. When tomorrow starts without us, don’t think we’re far apart, For every time you think of us, we are right there in your hearts. NEWS Warsaw ghetto survivor recalls ‘hell’ he went through they wanted to leave a trace of their existence, hence those acts of heroism, a testimony to honour,’’ Gutenbaum said. He recalled how German troops came into the basement, forced everyone out at gunpoint and took them to Umschlagplatz. “You cannot even begin to describe what was going on at Umschlagplatz,’’ Gutenbaum said. “Those SS men were bullying everybody, beating them, smashing skulls, de-

manding jewelry, demanding watches.’’ Gutenbaum’s mother and brother were killed in the gas chambers of Majdanek, but he survived with the help of other inmates, was moved to other camps and liberated by the Soviet Red Army. “The fact that I survived is a matter of luck,’’ the retired robotics engineer said. “Maybe I was at the wrong places, or rather at the right places at the right times.’’

WARSAW, Poland — Jakub Gutenbaum still squirms at the thought of scalding-hot walls in the basement where he hid while houses burned overhead during the Warsaw ghetto uprising. Talking to The Associated Press on Thursday, the 83-yearold Gutenbaum recalled people in the basement lying on the floor in utter silence with no clothes on in that “infernal heat,’’ but then collecting the strength to stuff ventilation and cracks in the walls to prevent smoke getting into the basement. They would come out at night, when the German troops were not in the ghetto, to look for water or to cook a meal on fire made from broken furniture. Gutenbaum, his mother and little brother hid with some others in the basement for 12 days, surviving the horror of the uprising — an against-all-odds revolt by hundreds of lightly armed Jewish fighters against a much larger Nazi force that broke out 70 years ago on Friday.

He will be among the ever-shrinking group of survivors from the ghetto who will attend a commemoration to be led by Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski in Warsaw. The Nazis set up and sealed off the Warsaw ghetto in 1940, gradually tightening the terror there, cutting off the Jews from medical and food supplies and systematically sending them to death camps from a departing point called Umschlagplatz. Residents were also decimated by hunger and diseases. Gutenbaum recalled seeing bodies of dozens of children in the streets, “some covered by paper, some not covered, and carts taking the bodies to be buried in the cemetery in Okopowa street.’’ Europe’s first open revolt against the occupying Nazi Germans, the Warsaw ghetto uprising broke out on April 19, 1943 when the Nazis decided to liquidate the ghetto and intensified transports of some 50,000 remaining residents to Majdanek and other death camps. The fighters “knew that they had to die, but
