export refined fuels to China and other Asian countries in the future.” Black released a Mustel Group poll in February that found three out of four B.C. residents support the idea to refine crude oil in Kitimat rather than export the raw product, diluted bitumen from the Alberta oil sands, by tanker. The same poll found that 57 per cent respondents opposed the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline project. Black has suggested his project may grow to include an alternative pipeline proposal, or oil shipped by the CN Rail line that already connects the Edmonton area with the North Coast.

School Districts 5 and 6 invite families throughout the East Kootenay to host one or two international students starting in September. Most students are from Germany, Mexico, Brazil and Japan, will be studying in Grades 8 to 12, and will be staying either for one semester or one school year. We encourage empty-nester parents or any family to consider hosting two students from different countries. Such double placements are consistently very successful. Host families receive a tax-free allowance each month per student, and weekend and/or vacation coverage is available.

COTR rates first with international students College of the Rockies had reason to celebrate on Thursday, April 18. The College received high honours in a 2012 survey of international students with an overall rating of number one in Canada and number two in the world. Conducted by the International Graduate Insight Group (i-graduate) the Student
Barometer is the largest annual survey of international students in the world. It covers four benchmarks – arrival experience, learning, living and support. Feedback was gathered from students from 15 countries worldwide, including 25 universities and colleges from Canada. Seventy-five percent of College of the
Rockies’ international students responded to the survey. Rachel Worley, i-graduate Marketing Manager notes, “193 institutions took part in the 2012 autumn wave of the International Student Barometer - the world’s largest survey of student satisfaction, with feedback from over 1.5 million students since the survey was first carried out in 2005. We’re delighted to have a number of new institutions on board, including College of the Rockies.” College of the Rockies’ Executive Director, International Affairs and Dean of Instruction Patricia Bowron says, “This is an incredible honour for the College, to come out as first in Canada and second in the world for overall student satisfaction in arrival, support, learning and living. It was great to be able to see how our results fared against some of the most wellregarded post-secondary institutions in Canada and abroad. ” College of the Rockies rated first in Canada and internationally in arrival experience, with registration and accommodations both garnering top honours. Program content and organization also came in at number one while class sizes and the career advice international students received were rated number one in Canada and number two worldwide. Support was another area in which the College was highly ranked with the Financial Aid office coming in at the top and the International Education department, Student Services and IT support all ranking number one in Canada and second globally. College of the Rockies welcomed students from 30 different countries in the 2012/2013 academic year. Over the past five years, international student numbers have increased by approximately 50 percent. The countries of origin for these students have also increased by fifty percent over the same timeframe. “Our success is a team effort and we were glad to be able to hold a small celebration on April 18 with College faculty, staff, management, students and host families to thank them for all they do to help make College of the Rockies a great place to be,” Bowron continued.

Celebrate Earth Day April 22
FortisBC supports the environment in both operations and services offered By Tom Loski Earth Day is celebrated annually April 22 with events held across the globe to demonstrate support for protecting the environment. FortisBC recognizes that sound environmental practices make good business sense and that’s why the company is committed to delivering safe, reliable energy in an environmentally responsible way to all of the communities we serve. We look for ways to support the environment in our operations and with services that we provide to our customers. One simple way customers can help the environment is to consider our paperless billing option, a fast and simple way to save paper and ultimately our forests. When customers go paperless, their bill is delivered directly to their
email address as a PDF file attached to the email. The eBill service is a fast, easy and environmentally friendly way for customers to access both their electricity and natural gas bill. Another simple way customers can look at reducing their carbon footprint is through rebates and financial incentives offered as part of our PowerSense and Energy Efficiency and Conservation programs. Through FortisBC’s PowerSense programs, electricity customers saved an estimated 32 million kilowatt hours of electricity in 2012. The PowerSense programs helps customers conserve energy and get the most out of their energy dollar by providing both financial incentives and advice on energy efficient technologies and practices. In 2012, FortisBC’s natural gas Energy Efficiency and
13-127.3_Spring_Campaign_10.33x7-PRESS.indd 1
Conservation programs helped residential, commercial and industrial customers save more than 360,000 gigajoules of natural gas, enough energy to heat some 4,100 homes in one year. Renewable natural gas is a B.C.-made, carbon neutral energy source. The methane gas used to produce renewable natural gas comes from organic waste found at local landfills and farms. Instead of escaping into the atmosphere as a harmful greenhouse gas, it’s captured, cleaned and added to our pipeline, giving our customers a renewable energy source. For about $5 more per month on their natural gas bill, customers can designate 10 per cent of their natural gas use as renewable. We’ll then inject an equivalent amount into our system. To date, more than 60 businesses and close to 3,800 residential cus-
tomers have signed up to be part of the renewable natural gas program. Helping customers conserve energy is one
of the most cost effective ways for us to meet future needs. And by making thoughtful energy choices — whether
it’s switching to paperless billing, installing energy efficient lighting or upgrading to a highefficiency natural gas
furnace — you’re supporting the environment. Tom Loski is the vice president of customer service at FortisBC.

You can use ANY yellow bin in the East Kootenay. Here are some quick tips to remember when recycling: • All plastics MUST be clean and have a number between 1 and 6. That number must be in the triangular recycling symbol. If there is no number, it should go in the garbage if it can’t be reused. • All plastic grocery/shopping bags can be recycled -- even if they don’t have a number on them. This is the only item that can be recycled if it doesn’t have a number. All other plastics must be numbered • Styrofoam CANNOT be recycled -- even if it is marked with a number 6. • Tin cans should be well rinsed with labels removed, if possible. • Cardboard should be flattened to save bin space. • All paper products can go in the yellow bins (and Fernie’s blue bag program) -- including hard and soft cover books. What You Need to Know About Glass Glass goes in the yellow bins marked “Glass Only”. The only glass that is accepted for recycling is food-grade glass, which is anything that holds your food or beverages. This includes: • •
jam jars salsa jars
• •
olive oil jars beverage bottles
Dishes, picture frames, trinkets, ceramics, light bulbs, window glass, etc. should NEVER go in the glass recycling bin. They contaminate the load. All lids should be removed prior to the glass being placed in the bin. The Glass Only bins are flat on top with two round holes in the lid and are clearly marked GLASS ONLY. For the location of a glass recycling bin near you, contact the RDEK.
50,000 kg of unused or expired medicines are collected each year
Both your alkaline and rechargeable batteries are recyclable. From AAA to odd size batteries (like the ones in your portable phone), batteries can be recycled in many communities around the region. Foil covered or waxy papers (like milk cartons or foil greeting cards) cannot be recycled. Milk cartons can be taken to the Bottle Depot for recycling.

jam jars salsa jars
• •
olive oil jars beverage bottles
Dishes, picture frames, trinkets, ceramics, light bulbs, window glass, etc. should NEVER go in the glass recycling bin. They contaminate the load. All lids should be removed prior to the glass being placed in the bin. The Glass Only bins are flat on top with two round holes in the lid and are clearly marked GLASS ONLY. For the location of a glass recycling bin near you, contact the RDEK.
50,000 kg of unused or expired medicines are collected each year
Both your alkaline and rechargeable batteries are recyclable. From AAA to odd size batteries (like the ones in your portable phone), batteries can be recycled in many communities around the region. in Kimberley and the surrounding region are older mining homes, many of which are being renovated,” said Jensen-Shill. “This year’s conference will feature plenty of workshops that will explore the best way to optimize energy efficiency.” Friday, May 10th will feature three-hour-long workshops in which presenters can go into a high level of detail about their subject: ideal for building professionals and home-owners interested in green building practices. tion of older homes into net zero homes with no energy bills. As well, there will be a number of green building and renovating products and services being exhibited at the Green Building Showcase. The general public is invited to Friday night’s events. “Saturday’s program features two workshop streams focusing on either energy efficient home renovations or a variety of green or alternative building methods and materials,” said Jensen-Shill. “We will have two days filled with the latest in green building, high performance renovations, net zero and passive homes.” Jensen Shill encourages anyone with an interest in building and renovating to come along. “The event really is a great investment of time and money for anyone in the industry,” she said. “Builders, designers, realtors, or anyone considering building or renovating with an eye on the environment will all benefit from the conference.” Kimberley building inspector, Andy Christy is keen to see renovators and builders attend. “When you consider the amount of time and money that people invest in either building or renovating their homes,” he said, “the cost of registration and time spent attending the conference is well worth the amount of knowledge and resources that participants come away with, not to mention the payback down the road due to decreased energy consumption.” See www.greenbuildingconference.ca for more information.

The installation of a new shower is a great deal easier if you are well prepared before staring on the job. If you’re doing the work yourself, make sure your tool kit is fitted out properly: putting in new fixtures requires some tools you might not have, and removing ceramic tiles and putting in new ones is not an easy job. You’ll also have to take care to waterproof everything in order to avoid the problem of leaks. If you decide to entrust this work to a contractor, familiarize yourself with the basics of bathroom renovation before meeting with him or her. That way you will know what they are talking about and if their budget estimate makes sense. Find out their hourly rate, availability to finish the job on a schedule, the materials they will require, their previous experience, and any other questions that can help you choose a reliable contractor. Prepare the bathroom before the work starts. To avoid damage to countertops, toilet, and cabinets protect them with old, thick towels or cushions or protective coverings. To cut contractor costs, remove the shower’s existing tiling yourself and scrape away all the grouting so that the surface is smooth. Old pipes and shower fixtures can be recycled rather than put in the garbage. Check the drainage and the infrastructure before waterproofing the walls and floor to prevent leakage. Cover exposed partition walls with waterproof panels. Choose tiling that blends with the colour and style of the existing décor. Many different elements should be considered when selecting a new shower head: its adjustability (pivoting, tilting, removability); water flow; type of jets (pulsating or therapeutic massage); and pressure adjustment. Take your time and choose a shower door that fits with your budget and décor.

Ready, Set, Learn is an initiative that recognizes that families need positive connections with the school system and community agencies that provide relevant resources and information. All public elementary schools in Southeast Kootenay School District will be offering an opportunity for all three year olds to come to their neighbourhood school (children born in 2010 who have turned three by the date of the RSL event). This event is a partnership between the province, the district, and the early childhood teachers in Cranbrook, Fernie, Sparwood, Jaffray, and Elkford. Ready, Set, Learn will include opportunities such as a tour of the school, a visit to the kindergarten classroom, activities, refreshments, displays or presentations by school children. Parents and caregivers will receive helpful tips for supporting their preschooler’s learning and development. They will also be provided with information about local services available. Each child will receive a learning kit. Four year olds, those children that will be entering kindergarten in September 2013, will be invited to Kindergarten Orientation in their neighborhood school. East Kootenays get the opportunity to attend a day at the After P.A.R.T.Y. Program where we try to shift the focus from behavioural to belief by instilling and supporting some of these assets so no matter what decision youth encounter i.e. drinking, texting and driving, taking part in risk-related activities, etc. they have the assets they need to make a positive choice. I have enjoyed being a member of P.A.R.T.Y Student Council for the past 2 years. I joined in hopes of seeing change in the youth of our community and I believe this to be true. Fairly recently I lost my step sister to suicide. Unfortunately alcohol was one of her main ways to escape the reality of her life and situation, and this led to self destructive behavior. The effects of alcohol on youth has become a personal reality for me. I hope that youth can look at me and see I choose to make a difference in the choices I make. Kyah

Victor Hugo once wrote that 40 is the old age of youth but that 50 is the youth of old age. And because travelling is such a formative experience for the young, it’s not surprising that baby boomers are in the process of redefining the tourism industry by imposing their own vision. Most baby boomers feel younger than their chronological age, and they are compelled to live life to the fullest and realize their dreams while they still enjoy good health. They might have grown up with mass tourism, but they are now in search of a more personalized travel experience. They prefer to travel along their own paths, rather than with tourist groups, and they want fresh itineraries that will lead them to new discoveries. While seniors aged 65 or older generally opt for more traditional and contemplative activities, baby boomers seem determined to be much more active. One 2008 survey showed that in North America, 56 percent of adventure tourists were baby boomers! Indeed, when they pack their bags, baby boomers are in search of unique sensations. They want personalized planning, pleasure, excitement, and new experiences. Travelling might have been considered a luxury by their parents, but baby boomers make travel a central part of their yearly schedule. And they are ready to pay the price for it, as long as they get their money’s worth!

& “Our Seniors”
April 21-27, 2013 Keeping fit as you get older No matter how old you are it is always possible to maintain or improve your health by adding some sort of physical activity to your routine. Better balance and a higher degree of independence are among the many benefits that seniors gain from exercise. Physical activity also tends to reduce the risk of falls and injury and helps prevent heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, type-two diabetes, and some forms of cancer. Best of all, it just makes people feel better! Start gradually but aim to do at least two and a half hours of moderate or intense physical activity every week. Any exercise that lasts longer than ten minutes counts. Biking and brisk walking are considered to be moderate activities if your heart rate increases and you are capable of talking but not singing while you are moving. Intense physical exercise includes jogging and cross country skiing. Don’t forget to strengthen your muscles and your bones with twice weekly sessions of an activity such as stretching, yoga, walking, weights, climbing stairs, and situps or push-ups. These will invigorate your heart and mind.
The Volunteers of the Year and the sponsors that made the ceremony possible.
Family Volunteers of the Year, sponsored by MEDIchair Kootenay Boundary, went to the Beaulac Family. Jasmine & Robbie are seen accepting the award.
