Inside the Nelson courthouse a tax evasion trial is underway, while outside the local doctor accused stands in peaceful protest, refusing to enter the building. Warren Fischer, a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine who co-founded Nelson’s Academy of Classical Oriental Sciences, is accused of evading about $66,000 in income taxes over three years — which carries a maximum sentence of a fine equivalent to 200 per cent the amount owed, plus two years in jail. Fischer was expected to represent himself in the case. But when his trial began Monday morning, he remained outside the entryway of the courthouse surrounded by a dozen supporters. He was paged several times and federal prosecutor Nils Preshaw went outside to advise him that

The Penticton woman who lost her husband but survived being stranded 49 days in the Nevada wilderness is among those who answered Our Daily Bread’s recent call for help.

No Appointment Necessary

The Future Looks Brighter...

“Many people all over Canada and the USA, and even Africa, prayed for us when we went missing...” Rita Chretien When the story of the local soup kitchen’s financial struggles appeared in the Star in early March, it had been almost two years since Rita Chretien and her husband set out on a road trip to Las Vegas for a trade show. The couple attracted attention worldwide as they became lost along a scenic route, their van stuck in the mud far off the main roads. “Many people all over Canada and the USA, and even Africa, prayed for us when we went missing,” said Chretien in a letter written to Pastor Jim Reimer at the Kootenay Christian Fellowship. “I want to give back something to others in need in other communities too because others cared for me and my family when we were in need of prayer, while we waited to hear news of Albert being found.” Albert Chretien, Rita’s husband of 39 years, reluctantly left the site of the van on March 21, 2011 after it became clear the boggedin-mud vehicle wasn’t going

anywhere. He died along the way to get help but his remains weren’t found until September 30, 2012. Rita was alone, cold and hungry until discovered by some hunters and rescued just in time on May 6. “During those 49 days God’s word was my Daily Bread,” said Rita. “The Daily Bread devotional book had been an important part of my life since I was a little girl. My mother read it with us every morning before school, before we ate breakfast. She said to us one day when one of my brothers complained that we had to read before eating, ‘God’s word is our food.’ That has stuck with me all these years.”

Crediting her bible with sustaining her along with rations of trail mix, hard candies and fish oil capsules, Rita’s story is one of faith. And now, giving back to those she sees in similar need. “The Lord has nudged me to pay attention to your need,” she told Reimer upon learning that Our Daily Bread was dangerously close to being broke which would mean an end to hot meals for those who struggle in life. “God bless you and your church family for all the love and care that you show to people in need.” Our Daily Bread relies on donations to daily feed between 50 to 70 disadvantaged people a hot nutritious

lunch. Last month, Pastor Reimer sounded the alarm bell as funds coming in to support operational costs were half of what they were in the previous year — and the year before that. Public response has been overwhelming, he said, with Rita’s offer to help being one of a number of touching stories. “This story of Rita just touched my heart,” said Reimer. “She’s an amazing lady. When she called me, I thought it was a great connection. She just wanted to give back. It’s how she felt after being spared.” See Related Story on Page 4

Our Daily Bread

Prayers for help answered KIRSTEN HILDEBRAND Nelson Star Reporter

The response to Our Daily Bread’s call for help last month will ensure continued operation of the local soup kitchen — for now. But the outpouring of support measures greater, giving Pastor Jim Reimer the strength he needs to keep going. “I have been a little overwhelmed, in a good way, by the outpouring of support, affection and love — and the desire that I see in people coming to me, wanting to have this service continue in Nelson,” Reimer said. News broke in the Nelson Star early in March that Our Daily Bread had seen a 50 per cent drop in annual donations from their usual mid-$60,000 range to just over $33,000. Fearing the hot lunch program offering meals for the poor, disenfranchised, elderly and homeless was at risk of closure, Reimer reached out to the public for support. Some amazing stories have

come out of this past month as people have approached the church leader with desires to give. In addition to the tale of Rita Chretien (see story on Page 3), several have moved Reimer — almost to tears. He shared one of those stories with the Star. An older gentleman came in and said that a number of years ago he used Our Daily Bread and credited it with “saving his life,” relayed Reimer. Since then he has been able to get his life together and when this man heard about the threat of closure, he wanted to donate. “He handed me a wad of bills, which turned out to be $500 dollars. I almost cried. For him, that $500 dollars was probably as much as $5,000 for some of us — yet he wanted to help,” said Reimer. This moment resonates with Reimer because it’s “what we want to do,” he said. “We want to help people move along, move forward. Every single person, at some time

in his or her life, needs a hand,” he said. “I look around and say, wow, this is really important. Day to day you may not see it but all of a sudden, five years later, someone walks into your office and says ‘you saved my life.’ That’s pretty cool.” Donations coming into Our Daily Bread, including $1,000 worth of pennies and bottles brought into SHARE Nelson, will keep the kitchen operating until July, estimated Reimer. “We’re just so incredibly blessed with how the community has responded. We’re out of the crisis for the moment,” he said. “But the sad part about it is that we’ll buy our food and pay our cook, for our lights and the money will be used up. It’s a continual thing. The nature of this business is that we don’t make money, we spend it.” Further fundraising ideas or financial support can be directed through 1-888-761-3301, mailed to 812 Stanley Street, Nelson, V1L 1N7 or online at kootenaychristianfellowship. com.

City Councillor Says City Needs to ‘Stop Planning and Start Doing’

Adams speaks out on planning SAM VAN SCHIE Nelson Star Reporter

How much planning is too much? That’s the question Councillor Bob Adams put to city staff at a recent council meeting. Since 2007, the city has undertaken nine major planning initiatives, including the Water Master Plan, Sewer Master Plan, Active Transportation Plan, Affordable Housing Strategy, Path to 2040 Sustainability Strategy, Sustainable Waterfront and Downtown Master Plan, Corporate GHG Reduction Plan, Heritage Register, and the Community Energy and Emissions Action Plan. All of these individual plans are now being incorporated into a revision of the city’s main planning document: The Official Community Plan.

“When is it time to stop planning and start doing?” Adams asked. City manager Kevin Cormack said the recent surge in planning shows the current council’s willingness to be innovative and undertake new initiatives. “We haven’t been standing still while these plans were being developed,” he said. “In many cases the planning is catching up with what we’ve already been doing.” Councillor Candace Batycki said she’s been impressed with how far the city has come in implementing its plans and believes its time to start reporting out on progress. “It’s not just council who set these goals, but members of the community — who are probably interested to know how we’re doing,” she said.

No one around the council table shared Adams’ concern about the number of planning documents.

“We don’t know how things such as climate change are going to affect us, but we’re preparing for those changes and we’re going to adapt...” Deb Kozak

City Councillor

Councillor Deb Kozak said she believes planning is necessary, particularly as we move into a future marked with uncertainty. “We don’t know how things such as climate change are going to affect us, but

we’re preparing for those changes and saying we’re going to adapt and try to mitigate those changes as much as possible,” she said. Councillor Paula Kiss said the planning process is an important way for council to engage with local citizens and hear their feedback on what they want the city to look like down the road. “For me personally, it was the harm reduction planning and sustainability planning that I participated in as a Nelson citizen that actually led me to run as council,” Kiss said. The revised Official Community Plan is expected to be adopted later this year, pending the results of one final open house for residents to provide feedback. The date for the open house has not yet been set.

Continued from Page 1 in print, then said “we’re standing here because we’re sovereign and we do not submit to their authority over us.” Fischer also said he was waiting for settlement on a debt contract worth a dollar amount “in the quadrillions” before he would negotiate with the courts. Fischer had no problem entering the courthouse for a pre-trial hearing in January, and his supporters drifted in and out of the courtroom on Monday relaying information back to him. Preshaw noted there was a spot waiting for Fischer if he wants to attend at any point throughout the trial, though the information he missed would not be repeated for him. The trial proceeded with Preshaw submitting five boxes of seized documents, as well as an electronic copy

of everything on a CD, for evidence. He had plans to call 20 witnesses to testify in the case, including Canada Revenue Agency auditors, investigators and police who were involved in seizing the documents. The first person to take the stand was a Canada Revenue Agency auditor from Penticton who was assigned in 2010 to an audit of the Academy of Classical Oriental Sciences and its owner-shareholders, including Fischer. The auditor told the court he believed the Academy correctly reported all its business income, while Fischer’s personal tax returns reported earnings of only $1 in 2008 and a large net loss in 2009. Academy records showed cheques totaling more than $100,000 paid to Fischer in each of those years, according to the auditor. Based on these findings, the auditor said he proposed

adjustments to increase Fischer’s taxable income, which were submitted to the Canada Revenue Agency investigations department who took over the case. A Canada Revenue Agency investigator in charge of the search of Fischer’s home took the stand next. She told the court her team had a warrant to seize financial documents and material related to the Paradigm Education Group, a tax protestor organization that offers seminars on “natural person theory” as a defence for not paying income taxes. She confirmed Paradigm Education Group material was found in the house and also noted a representative from that group came by the house and offered her a business card while the search was underway. She said the materials collected from the home filled two bankers boxes.

The other three boxes of evidence were seized from the Academy. Both search warrants were executed concurrently in March 2011. A computer specialist also seized the hard-drive from a computer in Fischer’s home office. The two-week trial is scheduled for Nelson court for the rest of this week, then resuming the week of June 24. If Fischer is found guilty, he will be required to appear in court for sentencing — which may require the judge to issue a warrant for his arrest and hold him in custody, if he continues to refuse to enter the courtroom. Polls and public policy

O

ne of the most exciting aspects of the online world which we now live is the immediacy. Through social media and online commenting, there is more opportunity than ever for dialogue and debate. When it comes to the media, this new era of feedback is something we use to help bring readers into the conversation and gage interest on particular stories. On our website — nelsonstar.com — you will find a weekly poll question. Each week we will choose a pressing issue or general item of interest and present it to our readers. Generally it’s a simple yes or no answer. Results stream in and after seven days we release the final outcome in our Wednesday print edition. We have been pretty clear that our online poll question is far from scientific. We will leave proper polling to the experts. Our questions are simply one more way to engage readers and provide a little sport in the process. From dogs in the downtown to crossborder shopping, at times the final results are predictable and other weeks it takes us by surprise. Last week we asked about the City of Nelson’s plan to spend $18,000 on sculptures in our downtown. The response level was above average and the outcome came as a surprise. The final count showed 75 per cent of respondents thought it was a bad idea. We happen to think the City’s investment is a fine idea. Our downtown has been lacking a spark in the last few years and if the Castlegar SculptureWalk is any indication, a program like this can pay dividends. Taking measures to beautify and enhance our downtown should be encouraged and those efforts usually come with a pricetag. So what to do about the poll results? It’s one part of the mix and though not scientific, shouldn’t be ignored. Our guess is people are more concerned about the dollars than the idea of adding interesting art to our core. That’s understandable. But online polls should not form the basis for public policy. Our community leaders should consider it, but the best gage for this issue will come after the summer is over. We’ll be sure to revisit this issue in another poll come October. The many levels of politics

olitics. At its worst, exclusionary, contemptuous and destructive, like the current federal ruling party’s ongoing onslaught on Canadian institutions. The termination of the Health Council of Canada is just the most recent example of the Harper Tories’ war on the environment, science, the arts, and now medicine — anywhere real progressives might have had any historic influence. At its best, politics is inclusive, allowing for a plurality of positions and values to be heard, respected, valued and accommodated. Local politics, with its emphasis on face-to-face interactions, challenges us to work with the range of perspectives and positions, and consider all ideas. Not an easy task, but one we must rise to if we value our communities, our land and water, and indeed our planet. Happy Earth Week everyone! Last week I attended my first Association of Kootenay-Boundary Local Governments (AKBLG) annual conference, held this year in the Columbia Valley, near Invermere. In BC, local and municipal governments are organized into five area associations, ours being the AKBLG. All BC local governments (except the Jumbo Resort Municipality) are also members of the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM), and most belong to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. These organizations all develop unified policy positions through a resolution system. Local governments propose resolutions,

Councillor Candace Batycki would like to see all levels of municipal government support the push to put a stop to the Jumbo Glacier Resort proposal in the East Kootenay. Bob Hall photo

and at the conference everyone present votes on them. Resolutions that succeed at AKBLG proceed to the UBCM conference in September, and resolutions that succeed there inform UBCM’s work with “other orders of government and other organizations involved in local affairs.” At AKBLG, resolutions were passed on issues ranging from farm gate meat sales, to tax assessments of brownfields, to urban deer. In addition to the resolution sessions, I also attended information sessions on wood biomass heating systems, community forests, lake management, implementing sustainability plans, and an interesting keynote on “place-making” whose take-home message for me was about authenticity: if a community is a great place to live, it will be a great place to visit. Our communities are not theme parks! Since we are in a provincial election campaign, we were encouraged by various speakers to ask specific

questions of our candidates. The UBCM election platform includes a focus on municipal funding, noting the over-reliance on property tax (“a 1950’s era revenue source”) in a time of increased downloading from the province and feds to the municipal level (with rising costs for police and fire specifically mentioned). With only eight cents of every tax dollar collected going to fund municipalities, we need a better revenuesharing approach with other governments. So, provincial candidates, what will your parties do to reform local government finance? What is your plan for providing the resources necessary to implement, monitor and enforce provincial regulations, and stop downloading to municipalities? Of course I have my own questions for our provincial candidates. What will their parties do to address climate change with the political courage this issue demands? Will they protect BC’s lands and

waters from oil sands pipelines and tankers? How will they protect biodiversity in BC? How will they support the expansion of community forests? How will they reform water governance? What will they do to keep the Jumbo Valley wild? I believe the creation of the Jumbo Resort Municipality, with its appointed mayor and council, and lack of any actual residents, was an affront to democracy. The UBCM has been asked to intervene in the judicial review case brought by the West Kootenay EcoSociety, and while no resolution hit the floor at the AKBLG, there was plenty of conversation on this issue. I hope the UBCM executive will decide to intervene, but whatever they decide, I know it will be after a spirited conversation, faceto-face, the way it ought to be. Candace Batycki is a Nelson city councillor who shares this Wednesday space with her colleagues.

Letters to the Editor

THE CITY OF NELSON

Nelson can do more to attract doctors to the community Is Nelson, as a community, doing enough to recruit new doctors? Of course there are countless reasons for why Nelson would be an attractive place to call home for young and experienced doctors alike — but I only know that because this is where I had the fortune of growing up. During medical school a few of my colleagues and I came to Nelson and worked under some of the amazing docs that call our city home. They endured our often meandering interviews with patients and painstakingly slow procedure skills, all the while making sure patients received the attention they deserved. Unfortunately, other than those patients, I don’t think the rest of Nelson knew we were even there. When we went to Rossland and Trail, on the other hand, both communities made efforts to welcome us with open arms. They hosted BBQ’s in the park, provided accommodation at a skichalet at Red, and truly gave us a chance to see their cities. They started recruiting us right from the beginning and made us feel welcome. Even McDonald’s took up the task, with “Welcome UBC Med Students” on their billboard below the golden arches. That might sound trivial, but I can assure you it had a lot of traction around the dinner

table that night. We still all remember how important and wanted they made us feel. Newly minted physicians have unmatched mobility in terms of where they can choose to work, so making a case for this city — and warmly embracing recruits — is essential. Nelson has so

The doctors who take on students and residents already invest countless hours during the workday. On top of that they would try to entertain us and invite us home for family dinners. Is it possible that the broader community in Nelson could pick up the evening and weekend shifts and show the students what

the city is all about? It should be the easiest job in the world to show a bunch of keen, young, health-conscious students, most of whom are alone and away from home, what Nelson has to offer. It is host to great restaurants, a spectacular art and music scene, probably the most concentrated collection of complementary and alternative Medicine anywhere, and unlimited outdoor sporting activities; The Best Ski Town in North America should be an easy sell. With the new UBC Medical School campus in Kelowna, Nelson is in a fantastic position to bring in more recruits and show off our incredible city. Doctors have always been protective of their patients and want to spare them the discomfort of the few awkward moments that we all created as medical students. But as patients, all of us are responsible for doing our part to train the next generation of doctors. So encourage your family doctor to bring in new students and residents if she or he does not already. At the same time, as a collective and engaged community, we can show them what a great city this is, and what an opportunity they would be missing if they did not come back. WATER MAIN FLUSHING PROGRAM The City of Nelson Utilities Department will start the Water Main Flushing Program. The flushing will be done Monday to Friday from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm, commencing immediately and continuing into the month of June. Flushing water mains is carried out as part of an annual scheduled preventative maintenance program to remove sediment that gradually deposits in the pipes and to help maintain water quality in the water distribution system. The benefits include maintaining and potentially improving the water quality level in the mains. This method will also reduce bacteriological growth, restore disinfection residuals, improve colour, control corrosion and can help restore flow and pressures in the distribution system. As your area is flushed, your plumbing may experience a temporary reduction in water pressure and/or discoloration of the water. These conditions are normal during flushing activities and are only temporary. Please run your drinking, cooking and laundry water before using. To clear your water lines, turn on your cold water tap or outside hose bib and let it run until the water is clear for approximately 15 minutes. Residents on a dialysis machine should call us at the number listed below and the crews will work to accommodate the resident. Some larger facilities will be contacted prior to work being done in their area of town. We apologize for any inconvenience this work may cause. For more information, please contact: Phone: 250-352-8238 email: publicworks@nelson.ca

Nelson is a great city to visit

As a frequent visitor to Nelson, I will say that your city has a lot of unique artistic diversity and cultural folklore to boot. It’s a very unique city — be proud of it, Nelsonites! On the other side of the spectrum, I come from northeastern BC where the winters are frigid, snowy and long. We have predominantly a red hot oilpatch and services-oriented economy. Sadly enough, it comes with a highly transient population that does not have strong family rooted traditions, unlike probably here. Your city has a very pleasant pace which

will pull me to return again. Finally, I want to thank profusely the staffers and volunteers of the soup kitchen located inside the Kootenay Christian Fellowship Church on Stanley Street. This is the best soup kitchen I ever attended, period. Especially thanks to “D,” Nancy and Lily for their dedication. I found the same dedication at The Dancing Bear Inn. It’s a great hostel. I love “Planet Nelson.” See you later. Claude Dionne Fort Nelson

Several West Kootenay non-profit arts and cultural organizations along with friendship centres will share in $2.384 million in grants given to 118 projects throughout the province. “Through their amazing creativity, artists offer perspectives that build positive images of our province as a great place to live and work,” said Community, Sport and Cultural Development Minister Bill Bennett. “This new funding will refresh arts infrastructure and programming, helping local organizations continue to bring the many benefits of arts and culture to their communities.” The Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development offered two new funding programs in 2013 — BC Creative Communities and BC Creative Spaces. The local beneficiaries all received funds from BC Creative Communities aiming to help arts and culture organizations encourage participation in local creative activities. Funding supports community celebrations, events and cultural mapping/planning projects to maximize economic and social benefits from the arts. In Nelson, the West Kootenay Regional Arts Council received $13,500. The Nelson and District Arts Council got $9,000 and the Nelson Historical Theatre Society was given $5,250. The West Kootenay Women’s Association will also benefit from $18,250. In Kaslo, the Kootenay Lake Historical Society received $2,800. The BC government supports culturally rich communities and a creative economy that, together, foster sustainable jobs, economic growth and a vibrant social fabric. The BC Arts Council helps carry out this mandate.

An overnight fire in Harrop last week has destroyed a home and left one man destitute. The Balfour-Harrop fire department was called around 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 17 as the singlewide trailer caught fire. “When we arrived on scene the trailer was fully engulfed,” Assistant Fire Chief Nora Hannon said. The home was rented by Shane Sprowl who was able to safely get out along with his four dogs. The experience has left him “absolutely devastated.” “It’s been shocking,” he said. “Words can’t really put this into perspective.” Emergency Social Services has helped the man with his immediate needs while Kootenay Animal Assistance Program is lending a hand with his dogs. Even so, Hannon says the victim of the fire will need further help. “He lost everything in that fire and had no content insurance. He lost all his tools for work as well,” she said. “Hopefully there will be community rallying behind him to help him get his feet back underneath.” A tradesman, Sprowl had a myriad of tools needed to build houses including roofing, flooring, painting and concrete gear. “It was thousands of dollars worth of tools and it’s all gone,” he said. With bare bones help from emergency services, Sprowl is

able to complete a contract he’d secured last week. His friends are in the process of setting up registries at local hardware stores. A bank account to accept donations is now open at the Nelson and District Credit Union (accout #40025080-150) so that the fire victim can work to get himself back on his feet.

“He lost everything in that fire and had no content insurance. He lost all his tools for work as well. Hopefully there will be community rallying behind him to help him get his feet back underneath.” Nora Hannon Aside from tools, Sprowl is most concerned about his dogs and feeding them as KAAP’s assistance won’t last. The man is also interested in staying on the Harrop property he currently rents and is looking for a cheap or free trailer to bring onto the site. There were nine firefighters on the scene until about 5 a.m. when the fire was extinguished. Despite several trees catching fire nearby, the fire was kept from spreading beyond the property. There were no injuries. The cause of the fire is still under investigation though it is not suspicious.

AGM and New Board

Nelson and District Credit Union wraps year and looks ahead to next SUBMITTED Special to the Nelson Star

At its 62nd annual general meeting on Wednesday, the Nelson and District Credit Union (NDCU) released its financial results for 2012 and introduced board members. The year’s high points were the Community Investment Program, which saw close to $160,000 distributed to over 150 local individuals and organizations, NDCU’s successful new chip debit card roll-out and the 2012 celebration for the International Year of Co-operatives. “In the past year, the biggest financial challenge continued to be the low interest rate environment,” said Doug Stoddart, CEO of NDCU. “Despite the ongoing challenges in the economy, 2012 was a growth year for your credit union with many collaborative initiatives contributing to our success. We appreciate the great job our employees did to help us reach our strategic goals. To the members, thank you for continuing to support your local credit union. And as CEO, I thank the board for their oversight and direction. Our job is to serve in the best interests of the membership; without you,

we are not relevant.” At the AGM it was announced that director Laureen Barker was re-elected, while director Colin McClure and returning director Michael Bancroft were elected by acclamation. McClure and Bancroft will serve the Nelson representative area and Barker will serve as director at large, each for three-year terms. The board elected long-standing East Shore representative area director John Edwards to the position of chair on Thursday. All installations come with a 2 year guarantee.

When planting an herb garden, you may want to pay particular attention to the types of flavors and smells you like in your home and cooking. This will help you to narrow down the types of herbs you will plant. Many would-be herb gardeners tend to start small to see what luck they have when cultivating herbs. Fortunately, herbs can grow well in containers indoors, provided the soil is amenable and there is plenty of sunlight.

801 Front Street

250-352-2882

Herbs will grow best in well-prepared soil. Make sure that it is rich in organic matter and drains well. Also, for plants like parsley, be sure to have deep pots or dig deeply in the garden to establish long taproots. Until the weather warms up, you may want to begin herb cultivation indoors and then transfer plants outside during the summer. Basil, for instance, is a tropical plant that does well in warm conditions. Therefore, it will need to be kept away from drafts and get several hours of direct sunshine a day. Place most herb planters in a south-facing window of a home to ensure they get ample sunlight and to allow the soil to dry adequately between waterings. With many herbs, leaf production will diminish on any stems that flower. It is essential to pinch off flowers that form to encourage the herb plant to continue producing leaves, which are the parts of the plant most associated with seasoning and aroma.

Former Nelson Minor Hockey Defenceman Adds Another Prestigious Title to Trophy Case

Kinrade helps Bern to Swiss championship BOB HALL Nelson Star Editor

Nelson’s Geoff Kinrade capped off a hockey season to remember last week when his Bern club captured the Swiss-A League championship before 16,000 faithful fans. Bern defeated FribourgGotteron 5-1 on Wednesday to capture the Swiss-A League post season title in a hard fought sixgame series.

“The entire downtown of the city was shut down for our parade and about 25,000 to 30,000 people were in the streets. It was a pretty cool show.” Geoff Kinrade

Swiss-A League Champion

“Our team has the biggest crowd in all of Europe for hockey,” Kinrade told the Star via email when asked about the post-game celebration and atmosphere in the final game. “The crowds are very similar to European soccer crowds with the songs, chants, fireworks. It’s very emotional and out of control. It’s entertaining.” The Swiss-A League is one of the top leagues in Europe and features many former NHL stars, young North American prospects and top-level European talent. Bern came into the Swiss-A playoffs as the second seed after the regular season. In the first round Bern was pushed to the limit by Geneva who built a 3-1 series lead. Bern stormed back to take the quarter-final in seven games. In the second round, it once again took seven games to get past Zug and earn a spot in

the league’s final series. Fribourg-Gotteron came into the post season as the regular season champions. The 4-2 series victory gave Bern their 13th Swiss-A League (also called the National League A) title since 1938. Last week’s championship was the second major hockey title in the last four months for the former Nelson Minor Hockey standout and Nelson Junior Leafs defenceman. Kinrade was a member of Team Canada over the Christmas holidays and helped that club capture the Spengler Cup. Kinrade also won a Calder Cup with the American Hockey League’s Binghampton Senators in 2011. “It’s more similar to the Calder Cup because of the time and energy that you put into a playoff run,” Kinrade said when asked to compare the three championships. “The quarter-final and semifinal rounds both went to seven games and we won in six games in the final. It seemed like it lasted forever. Especially since we [Bern] also went all the way to game seven of the finals last year and lost in the final seconds. The Spengler was more of a little bonus/hockey dream experience.” After winning the Calder Cup with Binghampton in 2011, Kinrade made the decision to pack his bags and head across the Atlantic. Kinrade started the 2011-12 season in the Czech League with Plzen HC where he played 34 games. Bern called Kinrade up at the end of last season to help with injuries during the playoffs. When the season started back in September he stuck with Bern in a campaign that saw the team add many locked-out NHL players like John Tavares (who all returned after the NHL resumed).

ABOVE — Nelson’s Geoff Kinrade (front row, left beside trophy wearing #19) captured the Swiss League championship on Wednesday with his Bern team. RIGHT — Kinrade at the victory parade in Bern’s downtown on the weekend.

Earlier this season Kinrade signed a two-year extension with Bern. Kinrade grew up in the Nelson Minor Hockey system and led the Nelson Junior Leafs in scoring as a 16-year-old rookie. After two seasons with the Leafs, Kinrade made the jump to Junior A where he played two seasons with the BCHL’s Cowichan Valley Capitals. The speedy blueliner then spent four seasons of NCAA college hockey with Michigan Tech. Upon graduating from college, Kinrade signed on with the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL and played his first (and at this point only) NHL game late in the 2008-09 season with the Tampa Bay Lightning against Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals. Kinrade signed with the Ottawa Senators for the 2009-10 season, attended their training

camp and was assigned to the Binghampton farm team. In the last week, Kinrade has been soaking in the celebration in hockey-crazy Bern where the scene resembles that of a team winning the Stanley Cup in North America. “It’s pretty close to that I would say,” said Kinrade. “The entire downtown of the city was shut down for our parade and about 25,000 to 30,000 people were in the streets. It was a pretty cool show.” Very few Canadian kids get to play professional hockey. Even fewer get an opportunity to capture three major hockey championships in their career. The 27-year-old said he feels fortunate to have accomplished what he has so far in the sport. “I’ve been extremely lucky and have been able to play on some great teams,” he said. “And hopefully I’ve had something to

Balfour hosts first junior event

Dr. Yasmin Garcia will be moving to Vancouver after August 15, 2013. She will continue to see her family practice patients at Community First Medical Clinic until her departure. We continue to actively search for locum physicians to temporarily fill the void left by the closure of several family practices in Nelson and area. We have, to date, been unable to recruit family physicians to take over Dr. Kailia’s and Dr. Garcia’s practices. There are various urgent recruitment initiatives currently taking place in Nelson and the Kootenays to attract more family physicians to our area. Your medical records will be available for transfer to another physician upon your request, or you may stop by the clinic to request a summary of your records. Please feel free to come by the clinic and we will do our best to assist you and make this transition as easy as possible. It remains an honour and a pleasure to serve this community. To book an appointment after June 1, 2013 with Dr Murray please contact Ancron Medical at 250-352-9144. Bob Hall photo

WHAT’S HAPPENING?

The swearing in ceremony last Tuesday morning included (L-R) Nelson Police Department Chief Constable Wayne Holland, Constable Sebastian Fazzino, acting mayor Robin Cherbo, police board director Dr. Bill Reid, police board director submitted photo Mike McIndoe and Nelson Police Association president Nathaniel Holt. SUBMITTED Special to the Nelson Star

The Nelson Police Department swore in its newest member last Tuesday. Constable Sebastian Fazzino gathered with members of the local department and the Nelson Police Board at the local courthouse where Honorable Judge Lisa Mronzinski of the Provincial Court of British Columbia administered the oath of office and allegiance. Fazzino is a familiar face around the Nelson courthouse where he most recently served as deputy sheriff for the British Columbia Sheriff Service. He is a graduate of Nelson’s

L.V. Rogers high school and has also attended Douglas College in New Westminster where he focused on business and marketing courses. While working in various sales and purchasing jobs in Nelson, Fazzino decided to become a member of the Nelson Police Department’s reserve program at which time he decided to pursue a career in law enforcement. “Mr. Fazzino’s experience and training as both a reserve and a full time deputy sheriff was instrumental in our selection of Sebastian as our newest recruit,” stated NPD chief Wayne Holland in a press release.

“Sebastian and his wife Erin have two children, Emily and Tyler, who they are proud to have had the opportunity to raise in one of the finest and safest communities in the province. We are pleased to welcome Constable Fazzino and his family as members of one of this province’s oldest and finest police services.” Fazzino will become the 81st constable to serve in the local department’s 116 years as a service. Fazzino commenced his duties on Thursday and has now embarked on nine months of training at the Justice Institute of British Columbia in the Lower Mainland starting this week.

Signs of trouble along Highway 6 Nelson Star Staff

Nelson RCMP are looking for a driver that risked their own safety to deliberately damage signs along Highway 6 between Crescent Valley and Slocan Park. Sometime in the early morning hours of March 23, a suspect drove their vehicle into the ditches and over highway signs. About 11 signs were damaged with an estimated repair cost of $4,100. “It was lucky no one was injured during this

incident, as the tire marks go quite a way off the road in order to strike these signs,” says a release issued by RCMP. RCMP say that damages were mostly to signs belonging to the Ministry of Transportation but some private signs were also damaged. “Damages such as this cost the whole community,” say RCMP who are also concerned about the dangerous nature of the game being played. “There are several residential properties along this stretch of road which could have been affected by this erratic and reckless driving behaviour.”

Career Opportunity Temporary Operations Coordinator Reference No. 1305

Ron Fraser loved being outdoors. Hunting, fishing, as a lineman for the CPR where he worked for 30 years, as long as he could be out in the fresh air he was happy. As a young man, he would cut school to go fishing and duck hunting on the Fraser River, or mushroom picking in the burnt patches beside the railway, bicycling home to his mother with his bounty. Ron Fraser was born in 1923 in Hardisty, Alberta to Grace and Daniel Fraser, who were homesteading in the area. With his four siblings, Donalda, Roderick, Margaret (Peggy) and Ken, the family moved to Vancouver in the late 20s, where sister Ruth was born. Ron joined the Canadian Army at the age of 17 and served as a motorcycle courier in England during World War 2. Ron married the love of his life Joyce Isherwood on May 13, 1950 and they lived to celebrate their 62nd anniversary in 2012. With their two daughters, Patricia and Colleen, they moved to Grand Forks, where the children enjoyed an idyllic childhood, and Ron could build their home -- and then a cabin on Christina Lake where the family would spend their summers. Ron and Joyce moved to Nelson in 1973, and Ron enjoyed hunting and fishing in the Kootenays. Ron and Joyce made many friends in Nelson, he was a great raconteur and always had a friendly word for everyone. Ron called bingo at the Legion and the Eagles for years. After Joyce was taken from him on Christmas Eve, 2012, Ron continued to live in their home, but his life was never the same. After a brief stay in Kootenay Lake Hospital, Ron slipped away in the early hours of April 17, 2013, one day before his beloved Joyce’s birthday. Ron Fraser is survived by his daughters, Patricia (Cal Koat) and Colleen; by his sister Ruth Fox, of Courtenay, BC; by his grandchildren Morgan (Matt) Westcott, Tavis Blishen, Rhys (Kieren) Geisler, Chelsea Blishen; and great-granddaughter Fraser Westcott. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada. Home is the sailor, home from the sea. And the hunter home from the hill. Arrangements are under the direction of Thompson Funeral Service Ltd. Online condolences may be expressed at www.thompsonfs.ca.

Everything in the store is being quietly, but dramatically discounted. The discounts really are extraordinary... in a quiet kind of way. This Quiet Sale is happening from Thursday, April 25 to Tuesday, April 30 which happens to be our fiscal year end, at which time I would rather be quietly drinking beer instead of counting inventory.
