A Rimbey resident with high blood pressure wants the public to be aware of the high level of sodium in the town’s water. Mary Leighton has been told by her physician to reduce her sodium intake due to her medical condition. “While I knew that our farm well water was high in sodium, I had no idea that the town water was also high,” she said. She said Rimbey’s water has 243/mg/l of sodium, far higher than the USDA recommended amount of 20 mg/l and the Canadian drinking water quality guidelines is equal to or less than 200 mg/l. Leighton believes the public needs to be aware of the high level of sodium in the town’s water and take the necessary steps to ensure drinking the water doesn’t adversely affect their health. “I was told some years ago that Rimbey is the heart attack capital of Alberta. While the altitude may also factor into this number, I now have to question if water doesn’t play a role.” Heather Kipling, communications advisor for Alberta Health Services, said the drinking water quality guidelines in Alberta are established by Alberta Environment. “As the community is a licensed water system operator under Alberta Environment, they, as with other operators, are required to submit regular water samples to Alberta Envi-
ronment. Alberta Environment alerts Alberta Health Services to any water samples that exceed human health parameters. We have not received any notification of any exceedence of acceptable human health guidelines pertaining to water in the Rimbey-area.” Information obtained online from Alberta Health Services states sodium is present in the soil and groundwater and reduces the hardness of water. High levels of sodium (more than 50 mg/l) are normally associated with very soft water. Levels above 175 mg/l may impart a salty flavour to water and may have a laxative effect on people not accustomed to the water quality. Sodium in drinking water is not considered a health hazard for normally healthy people. However, excessive consumption of sodium is not advisable, and the recommended maximum sodium intake from all sources is about 3,000 milligrams per day. A recommended limit of 20 mg/l has been established for people suffering from hypertension, circulatory or cardiovascular ailments and people on salt-reduced or salt-free diets. Although sodium in drinking water does not cause these conditions, it is a contributing factor to people pre-disposed to these ailments. AHS advise people who are concerned about the sodium level in their water supply to contact their physician.

Mother struggles to help daughter cope with bullying As Sandra watched her 12-year-old daughter, once a bubbly, happy child who embraced life and all it had to offer, turn into a silent shadow of her former self, her heart ached. Sandra, with a mother’s intuition, knew all was not right in her daughter’s life. She just had no idea how wrong things really were. “Her behavior changed. She used to be excited about school. She loved to learn and was always asking questions. Suddenly that stopped and she became withdrawn. She didn’t want to go out. She isolated herself.” As parents, Sandra and her husband did everything they could think of to coax their daughter out her shell and restore her zest for living. But, in spite of their efforts, nothing changed. One day Shelley flat out refused to go to school despite her mother’s repeated efforts at cajoling her into doing so. Finally, with tears steaming down her face, between sobs, she told her mom she couldn’t go to school because it was like living out a nightmare day after day. Shelley was being bulled. She was being a bullied by a boy who used to be her friend, but had, in a vicious attack of words, turned on her, reducing her childhood innocence and natural joy of life to rubble. He called her sexually explicit names and told her he wished she were dead. He found countless opportunities to keep up the name-calling and encouraged his friends to do the same. Before long, life for Mandy became a living hell. Despite her mother’s intuition that had told her something was not quite right in her daughter’s life, Sandra was shocked at how far the bullying had gone. “How do you feel when your 13-year-old daughter tells you she’d rather die than go back to school. She said she would rather be punched every
day rather than try and deal with the verbal abuse she was subjected to day after day.” After hearing her daughter’s account of what was going on in her life, Sandra decided to take action immediately. She let Shelley stay home from school that day, and went directly to the principal’s office herself to tell him in no uncertain terms why she had allowed her daughter that privilege. Surprisingly, she received no support from the principal or her child’s teacher. “He (the principal) told me kids will be kids and not to take it too seriously.” Mandy’s teacher took it upon herself to force the bully and his victim to become friends. They were told to sit together in classes and to buddy up for class projects. The experiment proved to be even more devastating for Mandy as the bully took advantage of the situation to heap more verbal assault on her. When Sandra saw her daughter’s downward spiral of withdrawal and depression continue, she demanded a meet-

ing with herself and her husband and the boy’s parents and the school principal and Shelley’s teacher. Once again, she received no support. “How do you know your daughter’s not lying,” the boy’s father told them. “Boys will be boys,” Shelley’s teacher said, with a dismissive wave of her hand. Meanwhile, Sandra, who had put her daughter on her own private suicide watch by sleeping in the same room with her, took one last desperate measure. She went to the school board. She was told the matter would be dealt with, but not given any details as to how or when. Far from accepting that vague answer as final, Sandra and her husband decided to take matters into their own hands. They had always taught their children compassion and to turn the other cheek rather than fight back, but this time they decided, perhaps, retaliation might be in order. “My husband and I sat down with her and told her everyone has a little ‘freak’ inside of them. Sometimes you just have to let that ‘freak’ out.” The next day, Shelley decided to let her ‘freak’ out. The bullying, the taunting and the name-calling had begun again, the same way it did every day. Only this time, Shelley had had enough. “She punched him so hard he fell out of his seat and lay on the floor crying,” recalled Sandra. This time it was Shelley who was called down the office for starting a fight. When her parents arrived, Shelley was crying and the bully was holding a wet cloth to his bruised mouth. Things seemed to quiet down after that. “The bullying didn’t stop but the bully became more covert because he knew people were watching. It didn’t fix anything but it sent a message (to the bully) that not everybody’s scared of you.” As word got out, Sandra and her husband were approached by others who mentioned the same boy had

bullied their children. His reputation as a hometown hockey star began to waver. The story does have a happy ending, not because the bullying stopped at that school, but because Sandra and her family moved away. And when Shelley began the year at a new school, a family liaison worker was there to help cushion the bumps and ease the pain of the past, restoring the girl’s confidence and self-esteem. But the bullying had left its mark on the whole family. “It was a terrible situation to be in,” said Sandra. “We felt so helpless, so alienated.” Sandra, now a grandmother, advises any parent who suspects their child is being bullied to intervene as soon as they think there is a problem. “It may not seem like a big deal to you but it is to them. Take it seriously and be actively involved.” With cyber bullying now rearing its ugly head, Sandra fears for her grandchildren. “Bullies are mental terrorists. They took my daughter’s hope,” she said. “They made her think life wasn’t worth living and suicide was the only way out.” Students who are experiencing bullying need to talk to a trusted adult such as their teacher, their parents or the family/school liaison worker. Adults may contact Neighborhood Place at 403-843-4304 or Victim Services at the RCMP office at 403-2224. The Bully Movie will be held April 25 at the Rimbey Community Centre at 6:30 p.m. Children under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult as the movie contains disturbing material.

I took another long, slow swallow of my Diet Coke and shoved a generous handful of popcorn into my mouth, spilling some down the front of my jacket but my eyes never left the screen. I was sitting front row and centre in a darkened movie theatre, completely Treena Mielke and utterly happy. I loved this movie. On The Other Side Sports movies. “That’s all you watch, grandma,” my grandson told me the other day. “I do not,” I protested but weakly. So I am watching 42, the movie about Jackie Robinson, the first black guy to don the Brooklyn Dodgers’ uniform and trot out to the field much to the horror of the proper, white, racist crowd. “Go home, nigger,” they yelled, the mob mentality rising with a hot fury that permeated the baseball stands. I have recently been writing about the effects of bullying. How to kill people with words. It’s easy. It’s effective. It’s hatred and poison at the highest level possible. I thought about this as I watched the snapshot, Reader’s Digest version of Jackie Robinson’s early life in professional baseball unfold. Somewhere in the back of my mind where I didn’t want to go, I realize this is the Hollywood version of the man. In real life his beautiful wife may not have gone into a bathroom marked ‘whites only’ in the airport, an action that cost them their tickets. And, I understand Robinson didn’t really break a bat against the dugout wall in utter frustration when the opposing team’s manager heckled him mercilessly when he got up to bat. But, even if the movie whispered slightly of Hollywood, the message resounding across the years straight from the field of the 1947 Brooklyn Dodgers, came through loud and clear. And while it is difficult to imagine a time when sports writers sat in the stands with typewriters on their knees, cellphones did not exist and computers were a miracle yet to be invented, the movie reminded us human emotions are as ageless as time itself. Bullying. The year was 1947. Or the year is 2013. It really doesn’t matter. It happened then, it happens now and it will happen again. Why? It seems lots of times, parents teach their kids how it is done. A 10-year-old boy was watching the Brooklyn Dodgers when Robinson first made his debut. He was watching the team but in reality the players were just shadowy figures playing out a scene in a day in the life of his childhood. Mostly, he watched his dad. He wanted to be just like his dad when he grew up. His dad, was, after all his hero. So when his dad yelled to get that nigger off the field, it is no surprise the kid picked up the message, and his voice, like an echo, played the words back. I reach into my bag of popcorn for another buttery handful and watch baseball history unfold. I hear the staccato sound of the bat connecting with the ball. I watch as the Dodgers themselves, learn less about baseball and more about life, as Robinson becomes one of them both on and off the field. And I feel the pride Robinson has to feel when he dons that uniform with the number 42 on the back for the very first time. I was born into a family of athletes. I was the least athletic but I was good at imagining and was always optimistic about my possible potential. Lucky for me, somewhere along the way I developed a lifelong love of the game. It seemed I always knew the story of Jackie Robinson. But it was good to hear it again. And to remember how the love of the game is ageless and can rise effortlessly above the barriers of prejudice, racism and hatred. It’s good. It’s a homerun sort of feeling. There’s really nothing like it!
Battle for Burma at crossroads Last month, as the anti-Muslim violence in Burma spread from Rakhine state in western Burma to the central Burmese city of Meiktila, Aung San Suu Kyi sat among the generals on the reviewing stand as the Burmese army marched past on Armed Forces Day. She is seen as a saint by many people — but she didn’t say anything about Meiktila, where at least 40 people were killed and 12,000 made homeless. She hasn’t condemned the far greater violence against the Muslim Rohingyas of Rakhine state during the past year either but there she had at least the flimsy excuse that this group is portrayed by the military regime as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. The military regime even revoked their Burmese citizenship in 1982 — and they have never got it back. The claim that the Rohingyas are foreigners is a despicable lie — the first written mention of Rohingyas in Rakhine dates back to 1799 — but Aung San Suu Kyi didn’t say that. She just murmured, “We have to be very clear about what the laws of citizenship are and who are entitled to them.” Meiktila was different. The Muslims of Meiktila are not Rohingya and there is no question about their Burmese citizenship. There is a large military base in Meiktila and yet for two days the army did not intervene to protect the Muslims. And once again, Aung San Suu Kyi did not condemn what was happening. There is a long game being played in Burma. The officer who launched a democratic transition after he became president in 2011, General Thein Sein, seems willing to relinquish the military’s absolute control of the country after 50 years in power — but he certainly intends to retain a major role for the army in the country’s politics. One reason is that his fellow generals would overthrow him if he did not protect them from fu-
Gwynne Dyer Guest Columnist
ture prosecution for their past crimes. Another is the army is obsessed with maintaining Burma’s unity. Only two-thirds of the country’s 60 million people are actually ethnic Burmese. All around the frontiers are large ethnic minorities — Shan, Karen, Mon, Kachin — most of which have fought against the centralizing policies of the military dictatorship in the past. The military don’t believe a strictly civilian government would be tough to hold the country together, so they have no intention of giving up power completely. As things stand now, the military’s candidates will be simply wiped out in the 2015 elections. In last year’s byelections, Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy won 43 out of 44 parliamentary seats at stake. So the army has to find some way to make itself more popular politically and the obvious way is to position itself as the defender of Burmese unity against treacherous minorities. There is no doubt the army is now complicit in anti-Muslim violence in Burma. The military are clearly hoping that Aung San Suu Kyi will speak out in defence of the Muslim Burmese, and thereby lose her popular support among the highly nationalistic majority. Knowing this, she has chosen to remain silent, presumably thinking that all this can be fixed after she wins the 2015 election. This is almost certainly a mistake. At some point in the next two years, Aung San Suu Kyi is going to have to decide which way she wants to go. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist whose articles are published in 45 countries.

Chamber’s keynote speaker addresses early child development By Treena Mielke Creating family-friendly businesses and helping to create a strong, sustainable community by allowing children to grow in a safe, loving and caring environment was the focus of the Rimbey chamber’s keynote speaker. Leanne Evans, program co-ordinator for Rimbey Early Child Development Coalition, met with the chamber at its meeting April 9 to talk about the importance of early child development. “From birth to age five is most critical for development,” she said. Evans said a provincial study on early child development shows Rimbey’s kindergarten-aged children above the provincial and national norm except in the area of language and thinking skills. “It doesn’t mean our kids are geniuses or anything but they are doing quite well compared to the rest of Alberta.”
Evans said the results are favorable but the community needs to continue to do its part to help children be the best they can be. Kindergarten children’s development, analyzed through questionnaires, in the areas of social competence, physical health and well being, emotional maturity and community skills and general knowledge, were included in the study. In the Rimbey area, which includes Bluffton and Crestomere, 114 questionnaires were analyzed. The Early Child Development Mapping Initiative is a five-year research and community development project that aims to improve the development of young children throughout Alberta. Chamber member Christine Plumb found the information to be “insightful. Where are you at with an action plan?” she questioned. Several activities and projects have been completed, Evans replied. “We hit the ground running.”
Brochures containing suggestions for creating family-friendly businesses are now in the preliminary stages. For more information about the provincial study on early child development, contact Leanne Evans at 403-843-4304 or email rimbeynp@telus.net The Early Child Development (ECD) Mapping Initiative, led by Alberta Education, is a five-year research and community development activity that includes implementation of the Early Development Instrument (EDI) in kindergarten classes across the province. The initiative will help Albertans to better understand how their young children are doing and to work together to support their healthy development. This initiative is funded by the Government of Alberta and involves the ministries of Education, health and Wellness and Human Services. Seven-year deal signals new partnership with Alberta doctors The provincial government and Alberta’s physicians have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that provides long-term stability for the health care system and improves care for patients. “There’s no question that this deal will benefit patients — it meets our fiscal goals and ensures we can keep working with our highly trained and internationally respected doctors to improve our cherished health care system. This has been a long and challenging process and I’m very proud of the work that Minister Fred Horne and Dr. Giuffre have done to reach this significant milestone,” said Premier Alison Redford. “I have been in continuous discussions with Dr. Giuffre during the past two and a half weeks to get this deal done,” said Horne. “Our pride in the work physicians do for patients has never wavered.
We have been successful in arriving at an agreement that improves access and quality of care for patients, and at the same time addresses very real fiscal constraints faced by our province. I’m very pleased we’ve reached this important milestone and I am confident a final agreement is close.” “I believe this MOU can provide what physicians have been seeking to deliver the care our patients need and deserve,” said Dr. Michael Giuffre, president of the Alberta Medical Association. “It establishes how physicians will be involved when decisions are made about the health system. The financial package recognizes the realities facing both parties and addresses challenges for physician practices such as climbing overhead costs. Finally, we have established a better approach to dealing with agreements, fees and programs in the future, including
productive ways to resolve disputes.” The MOU, signed by Horne and Giuffre, forms the framework for a final agreement with Alberta physicians. The seven-year deal freezes compensation for three years back to 2011 and provides increases from 2014-15 to 2017-18. The MOU includes: • No increases from 2011-12 to 2013-14, a 2.5-per-cent increase in each of 2014-15 and 2015-16, and a cost of living adjustment in 2016-17 and 2017-18; • A one-time lump-sum payment totaling $68 million, to be distributed by the AMA in consultation with Alberta Health, to address various financial challenges faced by physician practices; • Commitment to an ongoing agreement that reflects the permanency of the relationship between Alberta Health and the AMA; • Creation of a physician compensation committee to oversee compensation practices and any future changes, including reviewing and adjusting relative payment rates, or fees; • Arbitration rights on prices for fees and specific ben-

In addition to what is specifically set out in the agreement, the parties have also agreed to continue discussions on opportunities where Alberta Health, the AMA, and Alberta Health Services will work together to find efficiencies and savings within the health system. Both parties will use the MOU as the basis to develop a final legal agreement by April 22. Each party will then take the agreement through their respective approval processes. The last physician agreement expired on March 31, 2011.

Breast Intentions walk to raise funds By Kerri Robins Communities in central Alberta are limbering up, lacing up their shoes and getting set to Run Around The Zone. Spearheaded by the David Thompson Health Trust, Run Around The Zone is a series of runs and walks across central Alberta aimed at raising both fitness and health care funds. The Breast Intentions 5 km/10 km walk or run in Springbrook community near Red Deer in October 2012 raised $15,800 toward the purchase of an Intra-Operative Breast Ultrasound. Alanna Dukes, registered nurse with the Clinical Breast Health Program for Alberta Health Services (AHS) in central Alberta, is eager for the purchase of the ultrasound machine. “The machine is on order and will make a great contribution to women’s health care,” says Dukes, explaining the machine is used in breast cancer surgeries. “Once the surgeon makes an incision in the breast, the machine is used to take an image of the breast tissue, which then guides the surgeon. This increases the chances of removing all the cancer in one surgery.” The ultrasound machine promises to keep women ahead of the race against cancer with less hospital stays and less time spent in surgical recoveries. “We’re looking at enhancing health care over the en-
Points to ponder Dear Editor: Ever consider when voting that you should only vote for the candidates you wish to fill the positions in question? An example is that there are four council seats to fill, you have six names on the ballot to choose from of which only three people you would like to have on council. You are not obligated to vote for a fourth name if you only like three. The ballot is still valid with only three names chosen. Think about that the next time you have any kind of election to vote on. Charlene Habkirk

tire central zone of Alberta and the communities are really stepping up with support,” says Corrie Fortner, executive director for the David Thompson Health Trust. Rimbey is planning a run/walk for Mother’s Day, May 12, and funds raised will be allocated to local priority health care needs determined by Rimbey Health Services Donations Committee. Teri Clay, one of the event organizers of the Breast Intentions walk or run, got involved because she liked the idea that all funds raised were being put directly back into the community. “Not only was it a great experience helping organize this event for such a good cause, it’s nice knowing you’re supporting local health care,” says Clay. And that has everyone smiling. “This summer will be fun and Run Around The Zone definitely encourages healthy lifestyle choices — not to mention we all get to share in making a big difference to local health care,” says Fortner. Suspected vandal punched men were observed in a back yard stealing bags from a garage. Officers immediately responded to the area. Neighbors in an alleyway located adjacent to 52 Avenue stated a little black car and a grey minivan had sped out of the area prior to police being called. The investigation later revealed the culprits did not enter a garage but had stolen bags of bottles and cans destined for the recycle depot from beside the garage. Police used the Rural Crime Watch fan out system in this case since the crime was originally reported as a break and enter and there were suspect vehicles speeding in alleyways unsafely. Nationally acclaimed author speaks in Rimbey about energy challenges By Treena Mielke Learning to use energy on a moral and human scale is one of the most pressing challenges facing industrialized countries today, says one of North America’s leading investigative journalists. Andrew Nikiforuk, who won the Governor General’s Literary Award for non-fiction with his book Pandemonium; Saboteurs: Wiebo Ludwig’s War against Oil, was the guest speaker at a presentation held at Provincial Building in Rimbey April 12. About 50 people attended Nikiforuk’s presentation, sponsored by the Rimbey Chapter of the National Farmers’ Union and Radcap (Rimbey and District Clean Air People). During his presentation, Nikiforuk spoke about the material contained in his latest book, The Energy of Slaves, Oil and the New Servitude. In this moral and philosophical book he compares the practice of slaveholding with the way oil is used and abused today. He noted the slave trade, in its prime, was one of the most profitable enterprises on the planet and slaveholders looked at critics much in the same way oil companies regard environmentalists. Nikiforuk refers to a quote from Israeli journalist Amira Hass he believes holds true for himself, as well. “’It is our job as journalists to monitor the centre of power,’” Hass said. “In Alberta oil and gas is the most powerful industry.” He stressed Albertans are the rightful owners of their own resources and they need to take charge of how those resources are looked after. “They need to act like owners and exercise discretion over the pace and scale of development,” he said. Nikiforuk noted 30 per cent of government revenue comes from oil and gas production. “As a consequence one-third of our hospitals, roads and schools are directly funded by big oil.” The well-known author and public speaker sees the environmental, financial and political picture as getting worse before it gets better. “Change is coming one way or another. The first stage of the energy crisis is financial problems and we are seeing that all ready in the U.S., Europe and Japan. He said in an effort to smooth over the effects the oil and gas industry is having on the environment oil companies will do everything they to create the illusion that “its business as usual and things are fine.” For several years, Nikiforuk has advocated for a national debate about the pace and scale of oil sands development. And since 2010 he has endorsed a conservative and Norweigian-like solution to Alberta’s chaotic bitumen development. This solution was originally voiced by Alberta’s former premier, the late Peter Lougheed.
Andrew Nikiforuk Slow down. Behave like an owner. Collect our fair share. Save for the rainy day. Approve one project at a time. Clean up the mess. Add value to the resources. “To Lougheed’s original list, I would add a national carbon tax,” he said. Rapid oil sands development combined with the ruinous impact of petro revenues on government coffers has seriously polluted Canada’s politics and undermined its economic and environmental security,” he said. “It has transformed the country into another dismal petro state.” Nikforuk has won seven National Magazine Awards since 1989 and top honors for investigative writing from the Canadian Association of Journalists. The Tar Sands: Dirty Oil and the Future of the Continent, which criticized the pace and scale of the world’s largest energy project, was a national bestseller and won the 2009 Rachel Carson Environment Book Award and was also listed as a finalist for the Grantham Prize for Excellence in Reporting on the Environment. Empire of the Beetle, an account of how one tiny bug reshaped the geography of the west, was a Governor General’s nominee for non-fiction in 2011. Sharon Caswell, from the Rimbey area, who attended the presentation, was pleased with the turnout. “Hopeful he opened a few more eyes,” she said. Ken Stemo from Rimbey also enjoyed the presentation. “He let us know the path we are on is not sustainable. Oil is harder and harder to get and more and more expensive.” Stemo noted Nikforuk’s talk helped increase awareness about how the fossil fuel industry has taken over and history shows civilizations can collapse when they become too dependent on one resource. “We have to do what we can do and be aware of where we are.”

SPORTS
Rimbey racetrack continues growth and plans Submitted Central Alberta Raceways (CARs) in Rimbey is the first nonprofit multi-event motorsports park in Canada. The Kinsmen Club’s vision for the racetrack is to have it become a major tourist attraction that generates revenue to be redistributed to other projects in Ponoka County. Once completed, the park will include a quarter mile drag strip, threeeighths mile dirt oval, demolition derby, mud bog and motocross track. The Rimbey Kinsmen have worked alongside the Rimbey Lions, hundreds of volunteers and numerous private and public donors to construct the park and hold events at the track over the past 10 years. CARs has officially become of member of the National Hot Rodding Association (NHRA) — only the second in Alberta and fourth in Western Canada — and there is interest from National Hot Rod Diesel Association and numerous junior dragsters (ages average 10 to 16), to host regular events. Even the Edmonton City Police have been out to past events to teach youths road safety and promote Central Alberta Raceways as a safe, responsible alternative to street racing. Once completed it is anticipated more than 80,000 spectators and participants will attend the track
each year, potentially funneling millions of dollars back into the community and businesses. The Central Alberta Raceways project is being built as funds become available and when volunteers have time to contribute. As each phase of the project is completed it adds new revenue sources to further expedite planned development and contributions to other projects. The community and numerous supporters have contributed considerable time, equipment, material and expertise to complete what has been done to date. Although the Town of Rimbey wasn’t able to contribute toward the facility’s construction, we greatly appreciate their support by leasing the land and hosting annual downtown shootouts to raise funds that allowed the Kinsmen volunteer committee to initiate site design and construction to date that includes the dirt oval, a recently redesigned motocross track, 200-foot-long mud bog pits and 700 feet of concrete on the quarter-mile drag strip. Ponoka County council has been supportive over the past 10 years, providing the county road for the 2012 shootouts and donating construction materials. As fund raising and volunteerism continues through 2013, there are several projects the Kinsmen are

The Kitchener Masonic Lodge’s tradition of taking their special ladies out for a night of good food and entertainment will continue again this year. Ladies night will be held at the Rimbey Drop in Centre on April 26. Refreshments will be served at 5:30 p.m., dinner at 6:30 p.m. and entertainment will follow at 8 p.m. Entertainment is to include the well-known Rimbey Trio. Dress is semi-formal. Earl Giebelhaus, senior warden of the Kitchener Lodge #95 said all members of the community are invited to the gala event. “Profits from the fluid refreshment will be shared with the Rimbey Municipal Library and others will go towards aiding in the construction of the Masonic Centennial Park that will have a tie-in to the proposed community trail system.” Giebelhaus said the Rimbey Lodge has won the higher education bursary award consistently since its inception as it has made the highest per capita contribution to the fund from Central District. More than $32,000 has been distributed to Rimbey and district students from this fund. Kitchener Lodge #95 was registered under The Grand Lodge of Alberta AF&.M and received its charter in 1917, sponsored by Britannia Lodge #18 in Ponoka.

By June Norvila After missing last year due to low entries and an earlier date, the Bentley Curling Club held a successful 2013 closing mixed bonspiel with 20 teams competing when they reverted back to the traditional end of March date. Undefeated bonspiel champions were the family team of skip Kyle Brink, third Nicole Hunter, second Harvey Brink and lead Ashley Brink. They defeated the Dave Brand team 4-2 in seven ends when they ran the Brand team out of rocks in the eighth end. It was a hard fought game with only a single point scored each end. Finishing in third place was Jeff Kamlah, and in fourth, Shane Sroka. The second event was won by the Frank Shaw team with third Annie Thyr, second Dan Thompson, and lead Ryan Wasik who defeated Bruce Millar 6-4 after seven ends having run Millar out of rocks in the eighth end. That made Ted Feader third, and Ken Brown fourth.

Yodel club gives free concert By June Norvila About 14 members of the Wildrose Yodel Club from Central Alberta put on a special free concert in the common room of the Westview Apartments complex recently. They started with traditional Swiss songs and later, as a break from the regular pieces, broke into fun rock and roll tunes that both they and the appreciative audience really enjoyed as was evident from the big smiles and laughter. After almost an hour-long concert, the group took a 15-minute intermission, joining everyone in a coffee break complete with doughnuts supplied by the Bentley Senior Citizen’s Housing Society. Some members sat at the jigsaw puzzle table and worked on it for a while, some getting the odd piece to fit. Then it was back to work and practice, practice, practice. They did have to come without their director Leanne Oslund this year as she had a personal commitment being so close to Easter, but Urs Mueller and Heini Hehli kept things on track. The Yodel Club normally practice at the Bentley School, which is almost midway for all the members
to travel to, but the school was closed for spring break, so like last year, the Bentley Westview Apartments society provided them with free practice space. The Wildrose Yodelers will be having a fundraiser Spring Fest in Rimbey on May 4 at the Rimbey Community Centre that includes a meal, a concert, and a dance. It is their major fundraiser to help with travelling and other expenses. It is usually sold out. This year’s special guest is The Little BIG Band from Calgary with the multi-talented vocalists/multi-instrumentalists Jana and Danny. They will offer a different style of singing to give both the audience and the yodel group a listening break. The group has appeared and performed all over and has entered contests and gained acclaim across the world. It started up about 16 years ago. They welcome more members as younger members move on to university or other endeavors and are hard to replace. Some current members travel quite a ways just to practice and being a member takes a large commitment. For information about the group call Urs at 403738-2096 or Heini at 403-843-3408.

The group was formed in 2004 by music teacher Margaret Miller. “We are honored to be under the tutelage of Margaret Miller, an accomplished musician, teacher, composer and director. Most of the pieces we play have been specifically adapted for accordion by Margaret, artfully arranged in multiple parts to enable each musician to contribute importantly to the finished orchestral sound.” Wegmann said Of One Accord plays a variety of songs, ranging from traditional music to classical to boggy woogy pieces. She will play the Missing Her Waltz, a song she wrote herself, at the concert. Of One Accord has performed at the Edmonton’s Ronald McDonald House, International Airport, City Hall and the Festival of Trees in Edmonton. They have also played at the Italian Cultural Centre and other northern Alberta seniors’ lodges. They have entered the Edmonton Kiwanis music Festival and participated in Calgary, Edmonton and Victoria, B.C. accordion extravaganzas as both competitors and feature performers. Money raised at the Rimbey performance is to be used to allow the members to attend the Lethbridge Accordion Society’s inaugural extravaganza in June. They are also preparing to attend Coupe Mondiale, a yearly international accordion competition, being held in August in Victoria. “Our proximity to this year’s venue provides a rare opportunity for us to attend and compete in an event that in he past has been held in Italy, New Zealand, France, China Portugal and Norway,” said Wegmann. Tickets are available at Stationery Stories & Sounds and by contacting Irene at 403-748-2893.

COMMUNITY Develop emergency prepardness action plan Emergencies can often strike without warning, and can cause major damage and financial loss. Farmers and ranchers are particularly susceptible given the distance they may be from emergency services and the added element of livestock on their property. Brad Andres, emergency program manager with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development, advises farmers and ranchers to develop an emergency preparedness plan before an emergency occurs on the farm. “In a lot of cases, it’s like a risk management process. Ask yourself about onfarm safety and identify the risks that could really affect your operation.” Some of the emergencies that can affect producers include power outages, flooding along rivers and creeks, severe weather such as lightning storms, thunderstorms to tornados, disease outbreaks in animals, wildfires and grass fires. The emergencies farmers and ranchers should be aware of and consider when making their plan are listed on several government websites. Wildfire is an emergency situation that creates added challenges in caring for livestock. “There are many documents online from Public Safety Canada and the Alberta Emergency Management Agency,” says Andres, “which offer advice on how to make your yard or acreage or farm less susceptible to fire.” Being prepared with an emergency action plan is a great investment in helping preserve what farmers and ranchers have worked so hard to build. The information in an emergency plan specific to each individual farm operation will help to ensure the safety of family members, employees and livestock, and have the added benefit of minimizing financial loss and property damage.

TRICKER Harvey Alfred Tricker passed away on Wednesday, April 10th, 2013 at the Rimbey Care Center at the age of 92. He was born to Robert and Katherine Tricker on January 17th, 1921 in Swalwell, Alberta. Harvey will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his sister Rosalind Bertram of Red Deer, nephew Robert (Linda) and their children Rhonda (Tim), Cathy, and Rob (Tammy) and many other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by three brothers; William, Gilbert and Charles and his brother-in-law, Pat Bertram. Harvey was such a blessing to all who knew him. Everyone loved his wonderful inspirational stories of his life, whether it was stories of him as a hunter, a trapper, a farmer, or working the mill, the stories were always memorable. He could tell stories that would embrace you, and you could imagine yourself being right there with Harvey as his stories were so descriptive. You could see, hear, and feel right in that moment. Harvey’s door was always open to everyone. We would always love the feel and smell of the wood burning stove as you entered his home. You always felt welcome and you could enjoy a cup of tea with Harvey while he chewed snuff and told one of his stories. Harvey was blessed to have many friends and family which allowed him to remain in his home for so long and for this he was truly grateful. His sister Rosalind was an excellent care giver. She cleaned his home, made him meals, did his laundry, canned vegetables from his garden, and took excellent care of him. She would also take him on little drives around the countryside which he thoroughly enjoyed. She also planned a very special memorable 90th birthday party where many family members and friends were able to come and share the special day with Harvey. Alfred and Annie Tricker made the trip from the Yukon for this special event. This birthday celebration really meant a lot to Harvey. Special thanks also go to Doug and Evelynn for checking up on Harvey a couple times a day, and also for feeding his horses and cats. Other neighbours which have helped him over the years include Bob, Lou and Roy, Ian, Harvey, Tony and Val, Duane, Nina, Denis, Tenus and many others. Harvey was very fortunate to have such a loving, caring, community around him. Harvey was a kind, gentle, honest, loving and humble man. He touched many lives over the course of his lifetime and anyone who has had the privilege of meeting him will not forget him. Even though he will be missed greatly, he will continue to live on in our hearts through his stories, and will be remembered. Till we meet again our dear friend. Funeral Services for the late Harvey Alfred Tricker will be held on Wednesday, April 17th at 11;00 a.m. at the Rimbey United Church with Rev. Laing officiating. Interment will follow the luncheon at the church at the Swalwell Cemetary. As an expression of sympathy, donations can be made to STARS or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Purple martins carrying geolocators due back By Treena Mielke Ponoka County residents can rest assured if they spot a purple martin with a small instrument harnessed to its back, they are not seeing things. Biologist Myrna Pearman, site services manager at Ellis Bird Farm, said last season 22 purple martins were fitted with light level geolocators that contain data new to science. Geolocators will be attached to a number of birds again this season and the public is invited to watch the operation which will be announced on the website www.ellisbirdfarm.ca Information contained in the geolocators of returned birds will also be posted to their website.
The geolocators were attached to the birds at Ellis Bird Farm and in Camrose by Dr. Kevin Fraser from York University. Del McKinnon of the Purple Martin Conservancy (Mulhurst Bay) supervised the trapping operation and oversaw aging/sexing the birds. Dr. Geoff Holrody of the Beaverhill Bird Observatory also assisted.pr The Alberta project is a partnership between EBF, York University, the Purple Martin Conservancy (Mulhurst Bay) and the Camrose Wildlife and Stewardship Society.Funding for the Ellis Bird Farm component of the project was provided by the Red Deer and District Community Foundation through a special designated fund.
