Susan Hunter-Jivung is this year’s recipient of the McEwen Family Teacher Recognition Award. The distinction celebrates teachers who go above and beyond the school curriculum to make

The B.C. Conservatives will be running a candidate in SurreyCloverdale. Howard Wu is one of nine new candidates announced by the party last week. Election notebook BC NDP candidate Harry Kooner says his campaign kickoff April 13 broke previous fundraising records for the party in Surrey-Cloverdale, drawing more than 600 supporters. Notable guests included Harry Bains, Deborah Payment and Sue Hammel, plus party leader Adrian Dix. Comparing the Liberal and NDP candidates’ Facebook profiles is interesting. Liberal Stephanie Cadieux has fleshed out a full profile. She likes Pride and Prejudice (both the feature film starring Kiera Knightly and the classic novel by Jane Austen), Indiana Jones, the movie Top Gun, the band Blue Rodeo and rocker Lee Aaron. Kooner, meanwhile, shared news the Surrey Teachers Association will be endorsing him in the 2013 provincial election, and he “likes” Emily Williams, a Cloverdale singer.

and five of her former students supported the nomination. “Ms. Hunter links leadership, science, humanitarian endeavours and environmental stewardship,” former student and recent LTS grad Stephanie Blain said. “She encourages students to follow their own interests, develop their own passions, and through that, do something to better themselves and the world.” The McEwen Family Teacher Recognition Award was established to highlight the contributions high school teachers make to students and communities through their mentorship. This year’s selection committee – comprised of three UBC Killam Prize-winning senior Engineering instructors – selected HunterJivung out of three finalists. As the 2013 winning teacher, HunterJivung receives $5,000

to spend on school enrichment activities, programs or development. She will also be asked to nominate a current high school student to receive a $5,000

established through a donation by Vancouver biomedical engineer Jim McEwan, who believes in the importance of celebrating teachers.

Youth denied a voice on public transit funding To the editor; I would like to express my outrage as to the fact that regional transit funding has been placed in the hand of several million voters, none of which are going to be under 18 because those people are regarded as underage and have no say in their provincial government. Public transit needs to be treated as a first class transportation system, not only because it’s the most sustainable and efficient way of moving people, but because it is relied on by many groups of people (particularly young people and students) who will be hurt by the lack thereof. By turning to a decision option that excludes the voices of the young population and creates the risk that those who do not care about young people will be favoured, the B.C. Liberals are continuing their consistent disrespect of the young population.

Remember the Liberals’ Bill 22? Because of their incompetence, B.C. now has the worst student-to-teacher ratio in Canada. The situation being faced by young people in B.C. today is already very tough, and a denial of their voice in defining their transportation future will only make it worse. Investing in transit is crucial to giving young people mobility choices that they need to pursue the opportunities and connections that will allow them to become productive members of society. Prioritizing young people is important, because they can become the innovators that this world will need to solve global issues. I will be voting for another party this season. Well, I would if I could, but I cannot vote. Unfortunately, I’m under 18.

Best wishes, Bill Tributes roll in for ailing, admired ‘Good Citizen’ We’ve received some welldeserved kudos for Cloverdale Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Bill Reid, who last week was named Surrey’s Good Citizen of the year for 2013. You’ll read the full story on today’s page one. A version of the story, (“Cloverdale’s Bill Reid Named Surrey’s Good Citizen of the Year,”) was posted to our website, www.cloverdalereporter.com shortly after the announcement, resulting in the following feedback and well-wishes for Reid.

Bill Reid has always been an inspiration for me. I hope he is feeling better soon and back to his high energy self! Traci Penner

Get it together, centre-right

To the editor;

Early polling does not look good for the B.C. Liberal government as voters appear eager to have their tantrum and send them packing. A new NDP government should not construe this as a mandate to start engineering its vision of a Utopian paradise in B.C. Voters’ dubious desire for integrity in government, financial or otherwise, won’t be delivered by the NDP. Dix is renowned for his craftiness with altering an official document in abetting another B.C. NDP Premier’s violation of conflict of interest laws. Apparently two wrongs can make a right in the NDP paradigm. Entrusting the stewardship of the B.C. economy to the NDP is the formula for becoming a have-not province again.

Although, just before the election campaign began, the party was forthright in laying out its platform with its intentions to tax and spend, and to run budget deficits. This has been followed up by daily campaign trail promises to pilfer more and more hard earned money from the peoples’ pockets. Hopefully the centre-right coalition can get its act together more quickly this time around and the NDPs’ term and damage can be limited to four years. The elite of the B.C. business community and the power brokers of the B.C. Liberal Party that installed Christy Clark are well positioned to endure an NDP government, but the average citizens of B.C. are not.

Tackling the ABCs of the spelling bee Making light of the ultimate war of words EVAN SEAL

By Jennifer Lang As anyone who has watched the Scripps National Spelling Bee on TV might have suspected, a spelling bee contains incredibly fertile ingredients for a successful musical comedy. There’s inherent drama in the material, along with humour, tension, and poignant backstories galore. Cast and crew at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary are putting the final touches on this year’s

hearsals taking place after school – includes actors in Grade 8 to Grade 12. While most high school musicals require its teenaged stars to portray characters who are years, sometimes decades, older than themselves, it was the reverse for The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Fast says his cast is playing kids aged 10 and 11 – the same age of spelling bee competitors that are the real-life inspiration for the show. “They have to act ‘down’, below their ages, but we don’t overplay that too much,” says Fast, who’s joined by vocal director Sher Bennett, who’s responsible for choreography and vocals, and musical director Ron Rutley, who handles the live orchestra. Sets and staging for the show is relatively simple, because the action takes place in a school gymnasium, requiring a minimal set of chairs and a trophy table, plus props like a “No Bully Zone” sign and a state flag. “It’s very clearly an American show,” he says. “I didn’t try to Canadianize it.” The costume budget didn’t exactly break the bank, either. Students improvised their own costumes after watching real spelling bee competitions on YouTube. “A lot of [the actors] are real keeners and they went online last fall and started watching,” Fast says. There’s a few adult-aged roles, too, including the “Comfort Counsellor,” a woman who’s doing her community service by order of the courts, offering juice boxes to angst-ridden competitors.

The Broadway version featured six cast members who recruited four audience members before each show to act as guest spellers on stage. “We, however, wanted to cast as many kids as possible,” says Fast. “So we casted our ‘audience members’ instead with four more student actors.” Surprisingly, that decision didn’t present any major obstacles when it came to revising the script. Besides, the show features plenty of songs, allowing the “audience” cast members to join in with minimal script edits. “So for us, basically, the audience members join in all the singing numbers and they don’t have any speaking roles except when they go to the microphone and get eliminated.” Lord Tweedsmuir’s extended timetable – introduced two years ago to accommodate more students – has presented some rehearsal issues for Putnam County, which take place after school. But nonetheless it feels good to sink their artistic teeth into a full-length production. Last year, due to the threatened teachers’ job action in B.C., the school presented a series of evenings of one-act plays shows instead, which turned out really well. Fast says there was just one cancellation – the final show. The production will be staged for elementary schools on Monday, April 29, along with three evening performances for the public on April 30, May 2 and May 3.

– Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students. They’re available at the school’s main office and will be for sale at the door. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the show is at 7 p.m.

Casualties of war, the Home Front edition By Jennifer Lang The sacrifices of the home front during the Second World War are the focus of the Surrey Little Theatre’s final production of the season. Home Fires follows Nettie, a woman raising three teenagers – on her own – and four young women boarders who are struggling to make their way in small town Texas during, and after, the war. “Life makes some people bitter and some people better,” says

A&E

briefs Paul Cowhig, who’s codirecting the play with Brigitte Seib. “Not all the victories or all the casualties were on the battlefields.” Despite the serious subject matter, the play, written by Jack Heifner, is also poignant, funny, and full of hope. Home Fires opens

next Thursday, April 18, and runs Thursdays to Saturdays to May 18. Show times are 8 p.m. There are also Sunday matinees April 28, May 5 and May 12. Showtimes are 2 p.m. The production stars a cast of actors from across the Fraser Valley. Tickets are $15.

By Jennifer Lang For Cloverdale A1 Bantam Colt Wesley Ellingsen, it was one of the biggest tournaments of his career. The 15-year-old goalie played in the Male U16 B.C. Cup in Salmon Arm over the weekend. Western Hockey League and B.C. Junior Hockey League scouts were there watching April 18 to 21, as 160 players on eight teams competed in four, tournament-style round robin games, with three seeding games for the finals. The tournament determines who will move onto the provincial camp in July, and from there be selected for team B.C. Just being named to play in the tournament

is a big step for young players. Ellingsen was the only Cloverdale boy to make it to Salmon Arm. He was one of 48 goalies attending a regional camp of 200 contenders in the Lower Mainland to qualify.

More than 600 players tried out at four regional camps across the province. Ellingsen is a Grade 9 student at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary, where he maintains an impressive 90 per cent

plus academic average in addition to his hockey commitments. The players at the Male B.C. Cup are mixed together from all regions, instead of headto-head action, to keep a competitive balance. The teams each had designated coaches and trainers. “He had a fantastic time. The kids were amazing,” Wesley’s mother Tricia Ellingsen said. “There were a lot of good hockey players.” Other players from Surrey are Matt Barberis, who plays defence, Nicholas Tallarico, a goalie, forward Michael Regush, and Justin De Vos, also a forward, and Sahvan Khaira (defence), an alumnus of the Cloverdale Minor Hockey program. The players find out in two weeks who’s selected to the provincial camp.

Rebels round up sponsors Organizers of an upcoming lacrosse tournament in Cloverdale are looking for donations of any kind from sponsors and local businesses. The Surrey Lacrosse Association is hosting the first annual Rebel Round Up Tyke Lacrosse Tournament on June 8 and 9, at the Cloverdale Arena. It’s a fun, non-competitive tournament that will feature eight teams of young boys and girls (aged 6 to 8), and their families, from across B.C. Prize donations for raffle draws, donations of snacks and beverages for the players to enjoy during the games, and financial sponsorship to help cover operational costs for hosting the event are needed. For more information, call Ryan Paddon, tournament coordinator, at 778-575-5736 or email ryan.paddon@ gmail.com.

Adventures

Wings around the world, Malaysian style

Ursula Maxwell-Lewis

Capt. James Anthony Tan, a charming 21-year-old Malaysian pilot landed his Cessna 210 Silver Eagle, The Spirit of Malaysia, at YVR’s South Terminal recently – and charmed all who met him. Having battled severe dyslexia as a child, a chance meeting with a dejected Down Syndrome boy challenged Tan to step out of his comfort zone in a big way. He would prove that, despite disabilities,

dreams can come true. But how? “If I was not so blessed I would have become like that child, and I wanted to do something about that,” Tan explained. “I wanted to inspire young people, and the only way I know how is to fly around the world.” From then on, his goal was to be the youngest pilot to fly solo around the world in a single engine aircraft. Recalling his pilot training in Australia, the confident young captain described how determined repetition won him his wings. “I needed to do things over and over, and over again,” he explained. With justifiable pride, he reported achieving 94 per cent in his final exams. After a tough two-

year corporate sponsorship battle, Tan was ready for take off. With Asia, Russia, and Alaska behind him, Vancouver was day 15

on his 50-day global aviation marathon. Three Nisga’a Ts’amiks youth advocates greeted him in an impressive traditional

Dryness in the Nether Regions By: Lyle Sunada, B.Sc.(Pharm), compounding pharmacist

Vaginal dryness. Not a topic commonly discussed around the dinner table but nonetheless a very common problem for women as they age. In fact, it’s estimated that after menopause up to 85% of women suffer from vaginal dryness but only 20-25% seek help. Vaginal atrophy can cause dryness, burning, itching, pain when urinating, painful intercourse, and decreased sex drive and libido. Menopause and the decreased levels of estrogen can also result in an increase in the vaginal pH resulting in an increased risk of bladder infections and incontinence. Traditionally non-prescription solutions are to use personal lubricants or vaginal moisturizers like Replens gel. Personal lubricants don’t have very long lasting effects and studies on the use of Replens have been less than ideal. The feedback that I hear from my patients using Replens has been unexceptional and some are concerned about the preservatives and hydrogenated palm oil. One of the better natural personal lubricants that can be used before intercourse is Love™ by Lorna Vanderhaege. It is water-based, non-staining and does not contain parabens, toxic preservatives, or animal products and may help to restore normal vaginal balance to inhibit harmful vaginal bacteria growth. If you are trying to get pregnant and need a personal lubricant consider Pre-Seed as many personal lubricants are toxic to sperm.

ing hyaluronic acid, Vitamin E, cocoa butter, and sea buckthorn. Hyaluronic acid makes sense as it is commonly used to help with wrinkles by improving the skin elasticity, increasing collagen synthesis, and improving the water balance so it should also have an effect on vaginal tissue elasticity and dryness. A 2008 study using a vaginal suppository with hyaluronic acid and Vitamin E showed significant improvement in vaginal dryness,

burning, itching and painful urination. Mae is formulated at the optimal vaginal pH of 3.7 and is inserted as a non-messy ovule (vs. a gel) that will dissolve at body temperature for instant absorption. Mae should not be used together with latex condoms but can be used with polyurethane or lambskin condoms. Mae by Damiva was recently featured on Dragon’s Den and was picked up by one of the dragons.

you may need to consider vaginal estrogen therapy. Some women require direct local contact with estrogen to stimulate vaginal tissue growth.I generally recommend a low dose bio-identical estriol vaginal cream. Estriol is a human estrogen and is considered by many to be the safest estrogen especially in terms of cancer. Estriol-containing vaginal products have been used for decades in Europe and Japan but not in North America. Numerous studies show great results for helping vaginal dryness/atrophy, incontinence, and recurrent bladder infections. Because it is not commercially available it must be custom made by a compounding pharmacy. Most physicians are unfamiliar with estriol so talk to a compounding pharmacist for information to give to your doctor or learn more by attending my upcoming seminar on bio-identical hormones and hormone balancing. It’s time to start talking about this sensitive topic as many women are suffering needlessly and are too embarrassed to talk to their doctors, pharmacists, or husbands. It’s time to get help and as stated on the Mae box, “Get ready to feel like a teenager again, but with better judgment.”

Lyle Sunada is a compounding pharmacist at Pharmasave Downtown Cloverdale. He has been specializing in hormonal issues for 20 years. He likes to hear from you at 604-5762888 or by email lyle@cloverdalepharmasave. com

for the Cloverdale pet and the people who love them

Do you have an animal issue in your community that you’d like to see addressed? The British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals wants to hear from you! The BC SPCA is conducting an online survey throughout May to seek public input about important animal issues facing B.C. communities. The information will be used to help the donor-supported animal welfare agency make decisions about its programs and services during its next strategic plan, 2014 to 2018. A brief online survey, posted on the BC SPCA website May 1-31, will ask members of the public to prioritize their concerns about animal issues and to comment on the services their community needs most. The BC SPCA currently provides a

wide range of services for abused, injured, neglected and homeless animals throughout B.C., including cruelty investigations, emergency rescue, sheltering and adoption of homeless animals, humane education programs for youth, wildlife rehabilitation, advocacy, improving standards of care for farm animals and spay/neuter programs to reduce pet overpopulation in B.C.

Open House series on Saturday, May 25 from 1 to 4 p.m. Come meet adoptable animals and learn how you can make a difference to animals in need in your community. Visit spca.bc.ca for details.

If you care about animals and want to have a say about their welfare in your community, please link to the survey at spca.bc.ca in May and have your say! *
