BC Rail conflict complaint rejected
Black Press
A conflict-of-interest complaint against Premier Christy Clark for her role in the 2003 sale of BC Rail assets has been dismissed. Saskatchewan lawyer Gerald Gerrand reviewed the complaint made by Abbotsford South MLA John van Dongen after he quit the BC Liberal Party last year. In a 40-page decision, Gerrand found that Clark had no way to benefit personally from the sale, and that her decision to absent
herself from 2003 cabinet discussions did not demonstrate a real or perceived conflict of interest. Clark said she is relieved that the report is out, putting to rest what she described as “rumours, gossip and nasty untruths” about her conduct as education minister a decade ago. “It’s cleared the air on this,” Clark said. “For me, it’s proof that anybody can say anything, and it doesn’t have to be true for it to be hurtful, and it doesn’t have to be true for it to be reported again and

again and again.” Gerrand was harshly critical of some of van Dongen’s accusations, noting they arose nine years after cabinet meetings that van Dongen attended as agriculture minister. His complaints about Clark’s dealings with a lobbying firm representing one of the bidders for BC Rail are “replete with suspicion and innuendo,” Gerrand wrote. One of the accusations was that Clark may have been a source of confidential information that was passed to the bidder, United Statesbased OmniTRAX. The leaked information was central to the case against two former ministerial assistants in the B.C. government, Dave Basi and Bobby Virk. Basi and Virk eventually pleaded guilty to breach of trust and accepting benefits for their role in the case, admitting to providing
confidential bid information to OmniTRAX in exchange for money and a trip to Denver to take in a football game. Gerrand was appointed by B.C. Conflict of Interest Commissioner Paul Fraser, who excluded himself from the case because Fraser’s son works in Clark’s office. Gerrand interviewed a long list of players in the BC Rail controversy, including Clark’s former husband Mark Marrissen and Erik

ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, avoid making a mistake you may regret later. Difficulties are expected with any situation, but you have to rise above and exhibit grace under pressure. TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, address a situation that concerns you before it becomes a major misunderstanding. Others are concerned, but are waiting for someone else to speak up. GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, now might be a great time to present a new image. Someone you want to get to know better will respond to the changes you make in a positive way. CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Ask questions and you will get all the right answers, Cancer. Trust your intuition to fill in the blanks; rely on the people you look to for advice to guide you in the right direction. LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, enjoy activities and challenges that enable you to use your talents and skills fully. Stick to relationships with positive people and you will be just fine. VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, don’t be pressured into doing something you don’t want to do. Be prepared to face a few challenges; the most important might be figuring out your love life. LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 Listen and observe what everyone is doing this week, Libra. Once you have a clear image you can take the appropriate action to achieve all of your goals. SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, the people you interact with this week will teach you some valuable lessons. Your gut instinct will lead you in the right direction, but it’s up to you to take action.

10 TIPS TO A GREAT SALE! 1. Place your advertisement for 2 weeks in our classified section. 2. Call friends and neighbours to see if they’d like to do a sale together. The bigger the selection, the more customers you’ll have. 3. Give yourself a couple of days to get organized. 4. Gather boxes, newspapers, and bags to use during the sale to package purchases. 5. Set your dates and times. The first and middle of the month are paydays for many people. 6. Take the time to clean up your items… products will sell better when they look “taken care of.” 7. Make the most of your display by setting up in a visible area such as the front yard, the driveway or near the curb. Don’t tuck yourself and your merchandise in a dark garage. 8. Label everything for sale with tape. Price it so you might consider buying it for yourself. 9. Before the sale, go to the bank. Get plenty of small bills and change to have on-hand. Keep a calculator handy for quick adding. 10. Be an entrepreneur. Make extra money by selling canned sodas, lemonade, etc., to shoppers. If you have kids, have them do this! We, Maclaren Forest Products Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Xstrata Copper Canada Corporation (“Xstrata Copper”), PO Box 10424, Pacific Centre, 1300-777 Dunsmuir Street, Vancouver, B.C. V7Y 1K2, have submitted a permit amendment application to the Director requesting to amend Permit PE-3439 (tracking number: 222309), issued on 10 April 1978 and last amended on 4 November 2011 which authorizes the discharge of water from a decommissioned molybdenum mine-mill complex. The Boss Mountain former mine site (the Site) is located within the Cariboo Regional District, British Columbia, and approximately 60 km northeast of 100 Mile House and 5 km west of Hendrix Lake. Clinton’s 50/150 events great CLINTON
Katie McCullough 250 459-2172
kemccullough@hotmail.com
Clinton’s 50/150 Committee has been busy approving events to be a part of the 50/150 celebrations in 2013. Recently, the Clinton Elegant Dessert Party was put on by the Clinton Health Auxiliary on April
14. Clinton residents dressed up and attended the elegant evening, which included decadent desserts served by the Mill Girl Follies. Two wonderful skits were presented. The audience enjoyed “The Mammogram,” by Susan Swan and Megan Nairn, and “Rollie Jogging” by Christine Surraka. The Bean Dinner was held on April 16 at the Clinton Memorial Hall. This dinner is a longtime event put on by the Legion Ladies Auxiliary members who put on a fabulous supper with the many chefs who
prepared their favourite bean dishes for the event. The Clinton and District Outdoor Sportsman’s annual Banquet, Auction and Dance at Clinton Memorial Hall is on April 27. The event
starts at 4:30 pm with a social hour, followed by the dinner, auction and live music by Jess Lee and Friends. Tickets are available by contacting Rollie Higginbottom at 250459-2487.
