Candidates focus on job issues By Martha Wickett
market news staff
In a sparsely populated auditorium Saturday afternoon, the four candidates vying to represent the Shuswap riding in B.C.’s provincial election agreed on several issues, one of them being their top priority if elected. In response to a question about what they would lobby for with the interests of the Shuswap in mind, all candidates said jobs. B.C. Conservative candidate Tom Birch suggested working in co-operation with municipalities, noting
that a community forest such as Sicamous has requested would create forestry jobs. He also touted the revitalization of a small-scale salvage program. Other priorities were improving the Trans-Canada Highway in the area, and bringing fiscal health back to B.C. Chris George of the Green Party of B.C. said he would work to bring green jobs to the Shuswap, so the dads working in the north can make a living here. He would support becoming more of a senior-based community, with affordable housing and in-home support that would keep seniors in their homes. He would

also like to see the Shuswap Lake Integrated Planning Process move from a test project to a “full-blown water board” that is working well in the Okanagan. Steve Gunner of the NDP reiterated the need for jobs to bring people back from the north, particularly jobs in the high tech sector, “with so many talented people” here. He said more work in health is needed with the number of seniors and baby boomers in the riding. He also touched on the environment, particularly support for agriculture and the role of test kitchens in adding value to agricultural products. Tractors Starting at
Liberal candidate Greg Kyllo said he thinks he has more experience, via Twin Anchors Marine/TA Structures, in job creation than the rest of the candidates. He said four-laning the Trans-Canada Highway would increase tourism and facilitate getting products to market. He said an existing fibre optic line near the rail line would provide an opportunity for a call centre in the Shuswap. Audience asks about pipelines, highway Continued from front merce and the Okanagan Mainline Real Estate Board. Candidates provided a short bio, then answered written questions, some for individuals and some for all four candidates. Asked about the state of the Salmon River Bridge, Birch said the highway needs to be fixed along with the bridge, as did George, who noted that millions have been spent on straight, flat portions of the highway while dangerous sections are left untouched. Gunner said federal participation in highway improvement is imperative, while Kyllo noted there have not been a lot of accidents on the bridge and what’s needed is a way to record nearmisses. He said Premier Christy Clark looked at the bridge and has committed $650 million on
the Kamloops to the Alberta border stretch. Asked about an oil pipeline through northern B.C. to the Coast, Birch supported it, saying that stronger pipeline maintenance regulations are needed. Kyllo said the federal review process is equal to the process B.C. would take. He said, if approved by the feds, the premier would have several conditions, including that B.C. would need to get a fair share of revenues “commensurate with the amount of risk on the people of British Columbia.” George said no to tankers and pipelines, noting that the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill hasn’t been cleaned up and probably never will. Gunner said every submission to the joint review panel from lawyers to First Nations was against it and, if elected, the NDP would
have a ‘made in B.C.’ assessment of the pipeline. In individual questions, Gunner was asked about the fast-ferry fiasco in the 1990s. While he said mistakes were made, he added that building the ferries reinvigorated the B.C. ship-building industry. He said the last two ferries B.C. bought came from Germany and were not built in B.C. Kyllo was asked why his houseboat company has resisted attempts to treat greywater before it goes into Shuswap Lake, while houseboats being sold to the U.S. treat it. He said all his houseboats have the capacity for both greyand blackwater treatment, but there are not enough pump-out facilities around Shuswap Lake. He said about 85 per cent of pollution in the lake enters via river from agriculture and
Uptown Living
from treatment plants, while the houseboat and marine industry is responsible for about five per cent. He suggested all industries need to do their part. Birch commented on fiscal responsibility, saying B.C.’s debt has doubled in the last 12 years, increasing “faster than any time in our history.” He said the term ‘balanced budget’ doesn’t mean not adding debt, as 800 million in capital is being sold off and debt is being hidden in BC Hydro, which is “practically bankrupt.”

DOUBLE UP REBATE EVENT March 25 - April 27, 2013
Biologist Alexandra Morton and filmmaker Twyla Roscovich are hitting the road to take Salmon Confidential to communities around British Columbia. They will be at the Salmar Classic Theatre at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 28. Salmon Confidential is a new film on what Morton calls a government cover-up of what is killing B.C.’s wild salmon. When Morton discovered B.C.’s wild salmon were testing positive for dangerous European salmon viruses associated with salmon farming worldwide, she set out to find out why. Morton says the film provides surprising insight into the inner workings of government agencies, as well as rare footage of bureaucrats tasked with managing our fish and the safety of our food supply. “It is critical that people hear what is happening to this essential fish and why,” she says. The film and discussion are presented by Kairos-Salmon Arm and The Shuswap Environmental Action Society. Visit SalmonConfidential.ca for film showings and more information.

Don’t snooze this campaign away
The 2013 provincial election will be one of the most important in recent memory. At a time when the economy appears to be in slow motion, yet demands on the public purse are increasing, voters need to pay attention. Of course, we say this for every election – to no avail. In the 2009 provincial election, only about 50 per cent of voters bothered to cast a vote. Who is to blame? It’s hard to say. Is it negative advertising that turns people off? NDP leader Adrian Dix says so and has promised a more positive campaign. But will that end indifference or will people turn away in boredom? Is it helplessness and apathy that keep people away from the polls? Many people simply don’t connect with government. Liberal leader Christy Clark has tried to be a populist premier, appealing to the hockey mom vote, but has failed to attract women’s support. Why? Perhaps voters simply distrust anything politicians say. Clearly there is a disconnect and the media may have contributed to this malaise by blowing every little incident out of proportion. As in the story of the boy who cried wolf, many voters simply tune out after a while, yet, sadly, when there is a real issue, many eligible voters simply don’t see the connection between their vote and government policy. Instead, they leave the field to special-interest groups – business, unions, lobbyists – to hijack the results. The truth is that politicians will only be accountable if we hold them accountable. We have a right to toss any of them out if they don’t do what they promised so voters need to pay attention to what politicians say and they need to find out who they are. – Surrey Leader

Catch and release on a grand scale Last weekend I got into a fight with someone that was not only a foot taller than I am, but also outweighed me by close to 50 pounds. I got into a pretty good scrap with a six-and-a-half foot, 225-pound white sturgeon on the Fraser River near Chilliwack. (These fish are left over from a prehistoric era when dinosaurs still walked the earth.) The fight lasted well over 20 minutes and I must say I felt battered and beaten up pretty bad when it was all over. While I may have landed that fish, I certainly didn’t beat it. It just about pulled me off my feet a couple of times. My arms felt shaky for a good hour afterwards. My back still hurts. It’s hard to explain, but it was scary and exhilarating, all at the same time. Sturgeon fishing is unlike any other kind of angling I have ever experienced. The take is incredibly subtle, you watch the rod tip for the slightest tap, and then, once the hook is set, you
The GreaT OuTDOOrs James Murray just hang on as 225 pounds takes off – and when I say “takes off,” I mean that fish ran out a good 150 yards of line before it even showed the slightest indication of slowing down – and then it ran out another 50 or 60 feet more before coming to a stop. The only thing I can compare it to would be something akin to tying the end of your line onto a freight train and then holding on as it moved out on an open track bound for glory. Like I said, all I could do was hang on, because there isn’t much chance of stopping a white sturgeon until it decides to stop, and then, pull as hard as you
might, you can’t to turn it until it decides to turn. My rod was bent as much as it could bend for the whole 20 minutes. My arms weren’t just hurting, they were burning. I didn’t know if I could hang on, but in the end I brought it to the boat. My friend/fishing partner Corey, with whom I have shared many an hour river fishing, brought his boat to shore where I jumped out and reeled the fish in closer to shore. Corey took a quick photo and then we released it – without the fish ever being taken out of the water. All sturgeon caught in the Fraser River must be released. Now I do not intend to debate sport fishing. All I know for sure is what it feels like to be out on the river, early in the morning as the mist is coming off the water, watching that rod tip, waiting for a sturgeon to strike. I also know what it feels like afterwards. The effects of catchand-release on fish have been argued, studied and
written about for the better part of the last 50 years. Numerous studies (which have measured both the effects of various types of fishing tackle and angling techniques on fish mortality) have concluded that the physiological effects of stress (as a result of being caught) are usually pretty well reversed within a 24hour period. Common sense, as well as scientific data show that the longer fish are out of the water, the more they become stressed and that a minimal amount of handling not only reduces the amount of post-catch stress but also the risk of physical injury due to struggling and loss of body slime. Either way, proper catchand-release practices are important, not only to the survival of fish that are caught, but also to the future of fish like the white sturgeon to be available to catch in years to come. I can’t wait to get out on the river again this fall. Maybe my arms will have recovered by then.

MP’s statements ‘intentionally misleading’ I am writing a necessary response to the recent comments by our proud member of Parliament Colin Mayes regarding the return of Arctic Sea ice. (Shuswap Market News, April 12.) His statement is not wrong – it’s just plain silly. He is intentionally misrepresenting information or he is just woefully uninformed. Both options are unworthy of a federal representative when we are witnessing perhaps the greatest challenge the human species has ever
faced. If Colin had actually read further on the Danish Meteorological Institute’s webpage he would have discovered that sea ice today is significantly smaller than 30 years ago and melting has accelerated during the last 10 years. They also have a graph documenting last year’s record-smashing September minimum extent. It’s also well documented that the extent of new sea ice is misleading as it is made up of new thin ice vulnerable to melt.
In light of our present government’s hysterical push to develop fossil fuels and eliminate pesky environmental concerns, I can understand them wanting to downplay the hard facts of global climate change. But this sort of obfuscation – referring to “doomsayers’ sky-isfalling syndrome has actually proven to be just a knee jerk reaction to a cyclical spike...” reveals an arrogant meanspiritedness. He further underlines his incompetence by tossing off a cringe-
worthy statement reminiscent of Sarah Palin (another astute observer of the contemporary scene), who offered, as her credentials in international affairs that she could see Russia from her back porch. In Colin’s case, he confidently chirps, ”My brother lives close to the Arctic Circle and yes, this is true...” This level of ignorance is not helpful and is shameful coming from our federal representative.

Blind Bay Resort would enhance the region Regarding the Blind Bay Resort development. We have witnessed and enjoyed all the quality improvements made at this property over the past six years and believe several points must be considered: • Contrary to the apparent position taken by Scott Beeching, this is not a “travelling” destination. The fact that it’s a longer term destination is a complement to the economy of this region. • The typical “travelling camping stopover” that fit the description is generally unattractive and often invites what (developer Dan) Baskill refers
to as “…the scene of late night summer revelry…” • Blind Bay Resort is becoming a first-class resort/park that is commonplace at quality destinations throughout North America. • Ray Nadeau appears to be guilty of influence at too many of the “SWAT” – “SLIPP” –“OCP” organizations that object to visionary developments that would contribute to the local economy. • My own “observation” of the Salmon Arm Observer and letters to the editor, registers the consistent, over zealous, knee-jerk reaction of the “LLPC” crowd (left-leaning po-

Couple make unusual request By Barb Brouwer
MARKET NEWS STAff
It was an Agricultural Land Reserve request with a twist. Balmoral Road residents Kathy and Larry Pilcher asked Columbia Shuswap Regional District directors to support them in their quest to have a large chunk of their 29.61 hectare property included in the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR). Directors often receive requests to have land excluded from the Agricultural Land Reserve – usually for development purposes. Somewhat surprised by the request, several directors questioned the Pilchers’ motives at the April 18 regional district board meeting. “This is an unusual application,” Area F North Shuswap director Larry Morgan said.

n Kathy and Larry Pilcher sought approval from CSRD to include a large portion of their property in the Agricultural Land Reserve. “What would be the motivation, given that if they want to do agriculture, the could do whatever they want.” Debbie Cannon, city rep on the CSRD board, had the same questions. “I want to know what they want to do,” she said. Given the opportunity to speak, Kathy Pilcher told directors she and her husband

have seen lots of good land “go under buildings.” “I have a real desire to preserve some the agricultural land,” she said, pointing to the emphasis on the 100mile diet. She said she and Larry will lose a lot by returning their property to the ALR, in that the value of their acreage will be less than it is un-
der the current medium density residential designation. “It’s our desire to hang onto good land that can produce food,” she said. In recommending the board approve the Pilchers’ request, CSRD development services assistant Candice Benner told directors there is agricultural potential on the parcel despite soil conditions and steep terrain, and the proposal supports the Agricultural Land Commission mandate. The request was approved with all directors voting in favour except for Morgan, who was opposed to the move. Outside of the meeting, Kathy noted the couple’s concern for the way development has impacted Shuswap Lake and the surrounding land.

Swap it out at White Post The White Post Auto Museum has new owners and a new lease on life, as Vance and Keri Tierney host their first swap meet Saturday, April 27. The couple was looking for new, fun, things to do at the museum and noticed the need for a swap meet similar to the annual Chase event that had been moved to Logan Lake. “We had the space,” she says, and so hosting a swap meet makes sense. The Tierneys are familiar with swap meets, not only as spectators, but buyers and sellers too. The couple will put their experience into the event they hope will be popular with local residents. Keri says plenty of interest and excitement has been expressed already. One of her favourite items at
Saturday’s event is a 1956 Mercury. This is rare, she says as there aren’t many of them around anymore, and the year of the car is a particularly good one. The family-friendly event will have antique parts available for sale or trade, as well as more modern pieces. A number of vehicles will be brought in by local owners to show or sell. The Sorrento Lions club will serve lunch, with all proceeds going back into the community. The event is not only for car fanatics or collectors; it is for anyone who is looking for something different to do for the day. Families can step back to a less speedy time with the display of old vehicles. There will also be some unique non-car related antiques on view.
The Tierneys are always looking to buy, swap, or sell items, and invite residents to take their items to the museum when they are ready to part with them. They will also consign some items as well. New to the museum is the antique mall with its wide range of vintage costume and designer jewelry, glassware and oil and gas collectibles. Admission to the swap meet is $2, all of which will go into restoring and rebuilding the museum which has been around for more than 30 years. The Tierneys are planning a number of other activities throughout the summer. Some of the events include a community garage sale, as well as an antique furniture sale, though dates for either have yet to be set.

INFORMATION DESIGNED TO PROMOTE AND ENHANCE YOUR WELLBEING
How to reduce your risk for Alzheimer’s disease Alzheimer’s disease affects millions of people across the globe. In the United States alone, the Alzheimer’s Association estimates one in eight older men and women has the disease, which is the sixth-leading cause of death in the country. Few families have not been affected by Alzheimer’s disease, and many relatives of those with the disease fully understand the role family history can play. Research into the disease is ongoing, and it’s already yielded valuable information that may help reduce the prevalence of this devastating disease in the years to come. One byproduct of researchers’ efforts is the discovery that it may be possible to prevent or delay the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease through the implementation of a combination of healthy lifestyle choices. The following are a few healthy habits that may help men and women reduce their risk for Alzheimer’s. * Exercise regularly. A study conducted by Scottish researchers and published in the journal Neurology in 2012 touted exercise as the most effective way for adults to protect their brains from Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers examined roughly 700 70-year-old participants, all of whom were born in 1936, who were asked to report their levels of physical activity. Each participant then received an MRI at age 73. Those tests revealed
Staying physically active as you age can prevent or delay the onset of Alzheimer’s. that the participants who were more physically active showed less brain shrinkage and fewer white matter lesions, both of which are indicators of Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, the Alzheimer’s Research & Prevention Foundation reports that physical exercise reduces a person’s risk of developing Alzheimer’s by 50 percent and can even slow further deterioration in those who have already begun to develop the cognitive problems associated with Alzheimer’s. Researchers continue to study the relationship between physical activity and the development of Alzheimer’s diseases, but the evidence is
mounting that regular exercise, regardless of a person’s age, is a great way to reduce risk for Alzheimer’s. * Eat healthy. What you put into your body may also reduce your risk for Alzheimer’s disease. The brain operates at its best when it is fueled with a healthy diet that includes fresh fruit and vegetables, healthy fats and lean protein. A hearthealthy diet is also brainhealthy, and researchers have found a potential link between heart disease and Alzheimer’s disease. Researcher Larry Sparks of the Sun Health Research Institute in Arizona and formerly of the Kentucky medical examiner’s office studied
brain tissues with a goal of finding early signs of Alzheimer’s disease. He discovered that those who had the telltale plaques of Alzheimer’s disease also had heart disease, suggesting heart disease may be a forerunner of brain diseases like Alzheimer’s. The Alzheimer’s Association feels this link between the two will only grow stronger in the years to come, suggesting that a hearthealthy diet that reduces a person’s risk of heart disease may also reduce the risk for Alzheimer’s down the road. More information on a hearthealthy diet is available at www.heart.org. * Stimulate yourself
mentally. Mental stimulation can help the brain stay sharp, and men and women who find ways to stay mentally stimulated can reduce their risk of developing Alzheimer’s. Embrace activities that require communication and interaction with others, and find time for additional tasks that can stimulate your brain. These may include studying a foreign language, reading, trying your hand at mentally stimulating puzzles such as crosswords or Sudoku, and other activities that emphasize organization. Such activities are essentially workouts for your brain that can help it stay sharp as you age. * Remain socially active. Staying socially active into older adulthood is important for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is that research has indicated the brain functions better when men and women are not isolated from others. Memory and cognition are stronger when people remain socially active and engaged in their society, so retirees should look for ways to revive their social lives as a means to protecting their brains from the onset of Alzheimer’s or dementia. Alzheimer’s disease remains an enigma in many ways. But ongoing research continues to show that men and women can take measures to actively prevent or delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease and improve their quality of life as a result.

School District #83 is proceeding with plans to sell a number of its properties after receiving approval from the Ministry of Education. Trustees passed final readings on bylaws to dispose of Ashton Creek Elementary, the Jackson Annex, Mount Ida School, North Broadview School, the North Canoe annex and an empty property at 4730 Fifth Ave. SW. This means school district staff will initiate a sale process for the sites. The bylaws concerning the potential sale of the school district office on Shuswap Street and the South Canoe Centre were not finalized. While the ministry has approved the sale, and first reading of those bylaws was passed at a previous board meeting, the disposal of those two sites is dependent on other factors. In the case of the school district office, a replacement location has yet to be determined, therefore the board isn’t in a position to authorize the property disposal until a building is secured.

Shuswap Market News Friday, April 26, 2013
Smart business people know that your options to stand out from the competition are limited… Cut prices? Not very profitable. Improve product quality? Certainly, but that can take substantial time and money. The fastest, most cost-effective way to differentiate yourself is to focus on your service. Customer service can no longer be merely average or simply friendly; it needs to be remark-able. Here’s your opportunity to make that happen for your team…
Attend Jeff Mowatt’s half day seminar, “The Art of Customer Service… Influence with Ease” Jeff believes that today’s customers no longer value you as an information provider. For information, customers can search Google in less than a second and it’s free. Free is worthless. Fortunately however, there are 3 core elements that customers do want from you–better yet to receive them, they are willing to pay a premium. You’ll discover how to apply these 3 elements so you’re perceived less as an information provider or order-taker, and more as a Trusted Advisor. Plus much more.
Bonus– Observer subscribers can receive 10% off registration fee!

n A CP Rail engineer was able to put out a fire in a train’s control panel before firefighters were able to assist with the incident.
Fire ignites while train out of bounds The Chase Volunteer Fire Department was called out Tuesday about 4:15 p.m. regarding reports of a CP Rail train on fire on VLA Road. Once on-site the crew determined that the train was out of their fire protection area. It appeared that the control panel inside the train had caught fire due to an electrical problem. CP Rail decided to roll the train back into the coverage area so the department could assist in putting the flames out. Five fire trucks and rescue vehicles were waiting for the train to arrive, directly next to the Chase Visitor Information Centre. An engineer on board the train was able to put the flames out before the fire crew was able to reach the train. Chase volunteer firefighters ensured all flames were out before leaving the scene.
Village of Chase FIRE HYDRANT FLOW TESTING Starting April 29th through May 8th the Public Works Department will be inspecting the Village’s fire hydrants conducting flow tests to ensure they are operating properly and have adequate flow. The program is to comply with fire underwriter requirements. The program will run seven days a week from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. approximately. During flow testing, poor water pressure and /or high turbidity levels may result. This situation is temporary and may last for up to four hours. If turbidity is detected, you are advised to run a cold water tap and avoid doing laundry until the turbidity clears up. Please assist us by keeping shrubs and trees pruned back from fire hydrants. Staff will be available to answer any questions. Public Works Department Ph: 250-679-3436 Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Those selected after the cup will be invited to a camp in Nanaimo in July.
Morlove to perform in farm concert Talented B.C. songwriters Corwin Fox and Emily Millard (Miss Emily Brown) released a new Morlove record, Old Tomorrow, on April 23, which is being followed by a month-long cross-country tour featuring a string section. On Sunday, May 5 they’ll be stopping in Chase for a Golden Ears Farm Concert at the Golden Ears Co-op Farm, 5845 VLA Rd. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., show starts at 8. Tickets are $10 at the door. Born around the campfire at Artswells Festival 2007 in Wells, B.C, Morlove began as the banding together of Fox and Brown. The creative collaboration has since expanded into an exploratory orchestral folk band featuring string players Hannah Epperson (violin), Christina Zaenker (cello) and frequent contributors Jake Jenne (drums) and Neil Burnett (Celtic harp). Morlove translates the patterns of nature and man into gorgeous orchestral folk.

Dog fashion show at carnival Haldane Elementary Parents Advisory Council has organized a chance for the community to come together, have some fun and support their local elementary school. The PAC members have been working hard to bring back an old Haldane tradition, the spring carnival. In doing so, they have organized a number of events that will entertain the whole family. The little ones can enjoy some live entertainment from Uncle Kris the Clown, as well as partake in a little bouncy castle fun. All ages can enjoy in the dog fashion show, where participants will parade their deckedout pooch around in a circle where they will be judged on the best doggie outfit. Attendees can fill their tummies with delicious cotton candy, or other tasty treats from the Lion’s concession or the Rotary Club who will both be on site.

A silent auction will be set up, giving attendees the chance to bid on a number of great prizes donated by local businesses. Each of the Haldane classes will have also put together their own baskets which will be raffled off. Each class has drawn a theme to
base their basket on, giving each one their own unique flare. You never know what treasures you might find. Not only is the carnival a chance for the community, students, parents and teachers to celebrate together, but it also helps support the school and the
young children who will be attending next year. All proceeds from the fair will be put back into the school, helping to purchase new electronics, sports and gym equipment, as well as pay for fields trips. The event will run from 5 until 8 p.m. on
May 16. Anyone who wishes to enter their dog in the fashion show may do so by picking up a registration form from the Haldane office. All breeds are welcome, and the winner will get the bragging rights of having the most fashionable pooch in town.

Quilt show May 11/12 accepting quilts for display Chase residents are invited to come out and enjoy the artistic work of some of the area’s best quilters that will be on display at the Chase & District Museum & Archives Quilt Show. The two-day event is expected to host 40 to 60 different quilts, all of which were made by local quilters. This will be the first
event of its kind to be hosted in the museum. As it is normally filled with artifacts, an event such as this is not normally a viable option. However, as the museum is bouncing back from a fire that took place over a year ago, they temporarily have some open space. While some may have viewed this as yet another negative
impact of the fire, organizers have been using the opportunity to do things they never could before. This has included hosting a very popular Christmas concert, and now the quilt show. Keeping with the historic theme, organizers are looking for some heritage quilts to display as well. These would be any quilts
that are 50 years or older. While there will be a few items for sale, the majority of quilts will be for display purposes only, allowing locals to see some of the fantastic work that is being done in the area. The event will run Saturday, May 11 and Sunday, May 12 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the museum, located at
400 Shuswap Ave. While there is limited space available, organizers are still accepting quilts to be put on display. Only one quilt per person will be accepted. For more information on the event, or how to enter a quilt of your own, call Marjorie Erno at 250-6793548 or Maurine Torbohm.

Adams River Salmon Society to host documentary Government cover-ups, health risks and economic threats have all been rolled together in the latest documentary to come through the Shuswap, stopping for a screening in Celista. Salmon Confidential follows a discovery made by biologist Alexandra Morton while providing insight into the inner workings of government agencies, as well as rare footage of the bureaucrats
tasked with managing the province’s fish and the safety of its food. “For years, Alexandra Morton has soldiered on providing evidence of, and calling for action on the catastrophic state of wild salmon,” stated David Suzuki in a news release. “Government and industries have thwarted her over and over again. This film clearly documents that governments do not put protection of
wild salmon at the top of their prioities and Canadians should be outraged. I am.” The film, which will be screened at the North Shuswap Community Hall, April 29, documents Morton’s journey as she attempts to overcome government and industry roadblocks thrown in her path, and works to bring critical information to the public in time to save B.C.’s wild salmon.
“It is critical that people hear what is happening to this essential fish and why,” Morton says. “We don’t have to be helpless bystanders as government tries to bury the evidence. The careers of all who research these European viruses in B.C. are under attack, but disease in salmon cannot be a federal secret any longer if we want wild salmon to be here for our children.”
The website associated with the documentary, www. salmonconfidential. ca, provides information on the viruses, the impacts they will have and more. All those interested in viewing the documentary may do so at the Celista screening, hosted by the Adams River Salmon Society. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the documentary is set to begin at 7 p.m.

At Your Service
Robert Babakaiff of Arro Wood Heat Services has been in business for 5 years. A 45-year resident of Salmon Arm, he believes in buying his products locally. After being laid off from Coe/Newnes, he saw there was a need for a reliable wood heat technician. He became certified in the WETT program – which is a Canadian recognized association, allowing him to be able to inspect, install and maintain wood burning stoves and fireplaces. His services include chimney sweeping, estimates and advice on purchasing and installation of wood burning stoves, such as size needed for the square footage, and the best stove to meet your needs. Robert’s motto “Burning Clean = More Green” not only refers to the money saved when keeping your stove or fireplace maintained, it also refers to the environment, as the new stoves burn cleaner and more efficiently. Repeat customers are spreading the word of his fair pricing and thorough job. For all your wood heat needs, call Robert today for an estimate.
