With Mother’s Day coming up on Sunday May 12, staff at the Westlawn Cemetery are poised for a large influx of flowers and other adornments over the days leading up to the holiday. However, the City wishes to remind residents that only fresh cut flowers are allowed on memorials at Westlawn or alternatively artificial flowers in the Mausoleum. Any other adornments, of any kind will be removed by staff. This follows the adoption of the new City of Cranbrook Cemetery Bylaw, by Council in 2010 to comply with changes made to the British Columbia Cremation, Interment and Funeral Services Act. Under the bylaw, fresh cut flowers, wreaths and floral offerings may be placed in the authorized flower container during the period of March 16 to October 31, in any year. Artificial flowers may be placed in those same authorized containers from November 1, to the following March 15, in any year. At the Westlawn Mausoleum, only artificial flowers are allowed year round in the vase provided. Flowers placed on the floor will be removed by the Caretaker without notice. Fresh cut flowers, wreaths and natural floral offerings from a funeral procession, plant material and grave adornments associated with seasonal events or celebrations will be removed by the Caretaker after seven days.

Crossword Interior shot of the Pro3 Transportable Simulator. College of the Rockies will soon be offering Haul Truck Operator training at the Cranbrook Gold Creek and Fernie campuses. This training aims to prepare students for work in the Canadian mining industry. An Open House will be held at the College’s Fernie campus on Friday, May 3 from 9 am to 12 pm and from 1 pm to 4 pm. Those interested in the program can use this opportunity to take a test drive in one of the state-of-the-art, motionbased haul truck simulators. College of the Rockies’ Director of Continuing Education, Contract Training and Campus Operations Leah Bradish notes, “We work closely with partners in the BC mining industry and the Alberta Oil Sands to ensure training is relevant to employer needs. Thousands of haul truck and heavy equipment operators will be needed in Western Canada in the next decade. College of the Rockies is excited to be offering this training to our local residents.” In addition to the classroom-based instruction that will take place in simulators at the Cranbrook Gold Creek and Fernie campuses, the College has a mobile simulator that can bring the program to any location within British Columbia. The first Haul Truck Operator training program will begin on June 10 at the Fernie campus. Additional monthly instructional intakes will start in September at both campuses. Three Cranbrook students, enrolled in engineering courses at College of the Rockies, won medals at the Skills BC Competition in Abbotsford on April 17. The three competitors, all Mt. Baker Secondary School students, were enrolled in College of the Rockies’ Engineering Graphics course as dual credit students. Dual credit allows secondary students to apply for eligibility to receive both secondary school and post-secondary credits for College courses. Dual credit students Edmond Yoo and Derek

Johnson, along with their partner Landon Harvey, won the gold medal for robotics in the provincial competition. As a result of their win they have been invited to represent British Columbia at the National Skills Competition in Vancouver June 5 to 8. Simon Eaton, also a dual credit student enrolled in the Engineering Graphics course, was awarded the silver medal for his work in Mechanical CADD Drafting. College of the Rockies’ Regional Transitions Coordinator, Brian Conrad says, “The partnership agreement between the School

District and College of the Rockies has been a definite asset for these students. This program, combined with their hard work and the dedicated support of their teachers, Bill Walker and Paul Knipe, contributed to their tremendous success. We congratulate them all.” To learn about dual credit courses at College of the Rockies, go to: http://www.cotr. bc.ca/DualCredit/ To learn more about the Engineering certificate program go to: http:// www.cotr.bc.ca/university/

Two workers, contracted by the National Gallery of Canada, place a heavy lower “ring” from one of the large uniquely-forged chandeliers from the Royal Alexandra Hall at the Canadian Museum of Rail Travel, into a special crates for shipping to Ottawa. There are 3 main sections to the chandelier, plus the five fragile glass shades, that came apart as the fixture was removed starting at the bottom. The entire chandelier has a 12-foot drop, weighs hundreds of pounds and is insured for $22,000. The value of each one in 1998 was $15,000 on the open market and there are 8 in the Hall.

It’s time again to put on the chaps and spurs for the Cranbrook Dodge Bull-A-Rama and Dance to be held at the Civic Centre in Kimberley on May 4. This year’s event features bull riding, boys steer riding and a perennial favourite–mutton busting for kids aged 3 to 5. Guy Thompson, coordinator, is looking forward to this year’s event. “It’s a great family outing.” And if you happen to have nimble feet in your cowboy boots, stay for the dance after the bull riding. The Ken McCoy Band is on hand to keep your toes tapping. “I have to give a big thanks to all our sponsors too,” said Thompson. “They really help to keep an event like this going.” Tickets for Bull-ARama can be purchased at Sprout Grocery in Kimberley and at Hillbilly Hardware in Cranbrook. Map and running tips By Christie Kennedy, BHKin. Owner, Core Fitness Running is a fantastic way to get healthy. It’s easy to do (walk out your front door!) and it doesn’t cost much to get started. It doesn’t always feel good the first few times but if you stick with it, one day you will feel that “runners high” and never look back! Here are some general running tips to prevent injuries and keep you motivated, as well as some helpful hints for race day. Enjoy! 1. Hydrate! Drink plenty of water throughout the day, every day. 2. Electrolyte drinks are not necessary unless you are running one hour or more 3. Remember, it will get easier! 4. Run with a friend or running group, for motivation and fun! 5. Think about your technique; try to run light on your feet 6. Do not increase your mileage by more than 10% per week 7. If you are new to running, start with walk/run intervals 8. Allow your body two to three days of recovery each week (try cross-training) 9. STRETCH! – after your run 10. Get proper running shoes! Go to a running shoe expert to get properly fitted. 11. Be consistent – follow a training plan 12. Not every run

is going to feel great. Don’t get discouraged. 13. Add hills and speedwork to improve your strength and endurance after you’ve developed a good fitness base 14. Deep breathing will help you get through cramps 15. Stretch the calves and shins to prevent and help get rid of shin-splints 16. Do core exercises to prevent back and hip problems 17. Use Vaseline or body glide to prevent chaffing 18. Set realistic goals 19. Sign up for a race with a friend somewhere fun or exotic (there are runs in Las Vegas, Disneyland, New York, etc!) 20. Taper the week before your race RACE DAY 1. Wear sunscreen, bring layers 2. Do not eat/drink anything new 3. Get up early to eat breakfast, avoid foods high in refined sugar 4. Hydrate! 5. This is not the time to wear brand new runners or clothing 6. Double knot your shoelaces 7. There is no shame in walking 8. Thank volunteers and people shouting encouragement 9. Relax your shoulders, breathe deeply 10. Finish strong ENJOY THE DAY, CELEBRATE YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENT, HAVE FUN!!!

Join the celebration by The Mining Association of BC

Mining is one of BC’s largest and oldest industries and BC Mining Week provides an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the contribution of the modern industry to British Columbians. BC Mining Week is declared each year by the Legislature of British Columbia. BC Mining Week 2013 takes place April 28-May 4, 2013. For a full listing of events happening around the province of BC visit the mining week website: www.miningweek.ca This celebration has a long history in BC, the first BC Mining Week took place 25 years ago in Vancouver! The BC Mining Week committee, chaired by the Min-

ing Association of BC, is comprised of volunteers from a variety of companies, associations and institutions associated with the mining sector in BC. The dedicated hard work of the committee members and the strong support from our sponsors has fueled the ever-growing success of BC Mining Week celebrations each and every successive year. What began as a celebration in Vancouver many years ago has now spread provincewide across communities across the province who want to participate in the recognition of the contribution of the mining sector in BC! A strong mining industry is a keystone of BC’s economic prosperity.

Support for pro-mining provincial candidates Submitted Today, the Mining Association of BC (MABC), the Mining Suppliers Association of BC (MSABC), the

Association for Mineral Exploration BC (AME BC), and the Coal Association of Canada (CAC) have launched a “Vote Mining” campaign to coincide with

the start of the 2013 BC provincial election. Through the campaign website www.votemining.ca, the Vote Mining coalition is encouraging British Columbians to join us in asking candidates how they will support a strong and vibrant exploration, mining and mineral processing industry in British Columbia. Votemining.ca makes it easy for British Columbians to identify their candidates and communicate their support for the mining industry. For example, by using the website’s “Take Action” tool users can within minutes create and email a letter addressed to candidates in their electoral district. Votemining. ca also contains mining industry fact sheets, a “voter toolkit” of resources, and information on local and provincial debates. Mining supports jobs and families in communities across our province. BC has 21 major

mines, over 30 industrial mineral producers, 2 smelters and over 350 exploration projects. There are also over 900 companies in BC that provide supplies and services to mining operations. In 2010 the BC mining industry supported over 37,000 well-paying direct and indirect jobs. In 2011 it provided $9.9 billion to the BC economy and $805 million in payments to government to support important social programs, including education and healthcare. BC mines also provide the minerals and metals we need for every-day life. Computers, bicycles, transit systems and hydroelectric energy transmission would not be possible without mining. The mining industry will continue to play a key role in the economy of BC into the coming years if government and industry work together to support a strong exploration, mining and mineral processing in-

We Salute Teck Coal on their operations and continued community support

Mining coalition urges all British Columbians to let their candidates know how important

the mining sector is to our province before Election Day and “Vote Mining” on May 14.

of B.C. This is a positive step that will provide a regulatory basis to deal with impacts of mining on water quality in the Elk Valley, and will establish a regulatory context for permitting of future mining activity. The Order, issued under Section 89 of the Environmental Management Act, stipulates the development of an area-based management plan, in consultation with communities of interest. The plan to be developed will address the impact of selenium and other substances

released by mining activities throughout the watershed, associated economic and social costs and benefits, and concentration targets and time-frames required to stabilize and reduce levels of these substances. The Order establishes a long-term selenium concentration target for Lake Koocanusa which Teck expects can be achieved using water treatment technologies described in its draft Valley-wide Selenium Management Action Plan which was submitted to regulators early in

the first quarter. Development of the area-based plan in accordance with the Order and the associated public consultation is expected to take up to 15 months. Permitting activities on Line Creek Phase II and other Teck projects are expected to continue in the interim. “Teck is committed to maintaining the health of the Elk River and this step by the province provides a path forward to finalizing an Elk Valley Water Quality Plan,” said Marcia Smith, Senior Vice President, Sussee Teck page 15

tainability and External Affairs. “This measure recognizes the priority of protecting the environment while also ensuring the economic well-being of local communities and residents.” As the operator of five steelmaking coal mines in the Elk Valley which directly employ over 4,000 people, Teck is committed to continuing to work with communities, First Nations and other local stakeholders to finalize an area-based plan that achieves the shared goal of protecting the watershed and economic health of the region. Teck is at the forefront of developing and implementing solutions to this critical issue. Our Valley-wide Selenium Management Action Plan, which outlines significant measures to protect aquatic health while supporting sustainable mining activities in the Elk Valley, will be adapted as Teck works with communities of interest to meet the terms of the Order. The plan includes investments by Teck over the next five years of up to $600 million on the installation of water diversion and treatment facilities, investments in research and development to improve selenium management, and ongoing aquatic monitoring. “We have been taking action on this issue for the past several years,” added Smith. “To date, we have constructed several water diversions to keep water clean, and construction is currently underway on our first water treatment plant at Line Creek Operations.”

The agreement also links to the Strategic Engagement Agreement between B.C. and Ktunaxa Nation, which provides for a decisionmaking and project-review process to ensure the Ktunaxa Nation continues to be involved in decision-making about new mine projects. As well, the agreement replaces the Ktunaxa Nation Council’s existing Forest Revenue Sharing Agreement. “This agreement will provide significant social and economic benefits to the Ktunaxa Nation while creating certainty for industry in a key resource area of the province. It is a very positive step for the Ktunaxa Nation, the mining sector and for the region as a whole,” said Energy, Mines and Natural Gas Minister Rich Coleman. The ECDA provides stability and greater certainty for coal mining operations in the Elk

Valley. In the past fiscal year, mineral taxes derived from all coal mines in B.C. amounted to approximately 90 per cent of total provincial mineral tax revenue. Elk Valley coal operations contribute the majority of this revenue. The agreement also supports the BC Jobs Plan commitment to support existing jobs and create new jobs through the expansion of existing coal mines and the establishment of new mines on the coal fields in the Elk Valley. The ECDA builds on the existing Strategic Engagement Agreement (SEA) with the Ktunaxa, signed in 2010, which guides ongoing government-to-government discussions on natural resource decisions. The agreement is one step toward addressing the Ktunaxa interest in being recognized as a government in the Ktunaxa Territory, being appropriately accommodated for potential impacts on Ktunaxa Nation’s asserted Aboriginal rights, including title, achieving a greater role in the regional economy. Under the ECDA, the Ktunaxa Nation will invest its revenue-share to achieve its social and economic objectives, which include enhancing the well-being of Ktunaxa communities and Ktunaxa citizens through initiatives related to education, cultural revitalization, housing, infrastructure, health, economic development, land stewardship, intergovernmental engagement processes and governance capacity.

Home Improvement and Renovations Construction questions: Where can I sign up for Tools 101? by Menno Dueck

Fact or myth? Men are born knowing everything about power

tools. Mike and Stuart have different views when it comes to tools. Mike is proud of his collection,

carpentry abilities in that “can’t be too hard to do” kind of way. Mike needs to replace five deck planks and starts by removing the deck screws with his shiny new drill. Hands on hips, he looks down at the now gaping hole and gives himself a thumbs up. New deck planks will be cut to

size with the skill saw Mike’s kids bought him last Father’s Day. First cut, while a bit shaky, goes not too bad. Second one better and by the time the fifth and last cut, Mike is so pumped he has visions of adding a roof over the deck or maybe a whole new addition. The saw rips through the final plank

and Mike lets out a loud “yes” which quickly turns into a scream as the saw rips through Mike’s jeans and into his thigh. In his excitement, he neglected to take his finger completely off the trigger and when he brought the saw to his side, the see Tools page 19

veals the blade is not only as dull as can be, but had been put in backward. Stuart borrows a sawszall from this neighbour, and after being given a short lesson from CN happily continues his project. Word quickly spreads through the neighbour-

hood about Mike’s injury and his subsequent power tool phobia. Stuart hears the story, and rubbing his hands together, heads over to Mike’s. He’s planning to finish his basement and is short a few tools. (Based on two true stories, names changed

Obituaries OBITUARY

Ann Hanson On April 19, 2013, Ann Hanson passed away peacefully at Willow Creek Continuing Care Center in Claresholm, Alberta at the age of 90. Ann was born in Middle Lake, Saskatchewan on February 14, 1923. She married John Hanson in 1949 and in 1952 they moved to Cranbrook. In 1954 they moved into their home on 6th Street where they raised their two daughters. After her husband John passed away in 1989, Ann continued to live there until March 2010 when she moved to Claresholm, AB to be closer to family. Ann liked to sew, cook, bake, watch old movies from the Silver Screen era and to walk. A stroll around the neighbourhood was the highlight of her day. Ann was struck by a car shortly after her 80th birthday. This, however, did not deter her from her walks. After the accident she could be seen pushing her walker down the streets, and in the winter, over the snow banks. Ann also loved camping. Every summer she looked forward to camping with her family. She was 88 before these outings ended. She was also a member of the United Church which she attended regularly while living in Cranbrook. Ann will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her daughters, Faith (Alan) Bailey of Kamloops, BC and Hope (Rodney) Jensen of Claresholm, AB. She also leaves six grandchildren to cherish her memory, Spencer, Reed and Evan Bailey and Logan, Dana (Kenny)and Nadine Jensen. She is also survived by two brothers, William (Mary) Will of Penticton, BC and Joe (Pat) Will of Toronto, ON along with numerous nephews and nieces. Ann was predeceased by her parents, Stephen and Elizabeth Will, her husband, John and twelve brothers and sisters. The family would like to thank Dr. Linda Smith and Dr. Andrea Ingram for the care they gave Ann while she resided in Cranbrook. The family also appreciated the care that Ann was given at Porcupine Hills Lodge and Willow Creek Continuing Care Center in Claresholm. A memorial service will be held on May 3 at 11:00AM in the Cranbrook United Church at 2-12th Ave South. In lieu of flowers, donations to Ann’s memory may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation 1-800-378-2233 or www.cysticfibrosis.ca.

Sandra Lynn Domin (Fabbro Muri) June 12, 1957 – April 23, 2013 With heavy hearts we sadly announce the passing of Sandra. She passed away peacefully on april 23, 2013 in Cranbrook B.C with family by her side. Being with Al, Shayla and her dog Zoomie was the most important in Sandra’s life. Sandra loved spending time with family and friends doing crafts, huckleberry picking, working with special needs children, but her biggest passion was being in the kitchen. She leaves to mourn, husband Al, daughter Shayla, mother Thelma Konkin (Peter), sister Janine Carver (Randy & Tyler), brothers Randy Fabbro (Kandice & Randall) and Rick Fabbro. Predeceased by father Tillio Fabbro, step father Deniis Muri, brother Danny Fabbro, grandparents Noni and Nono, mother in law Josie Domin. Sandra will be truly missed by family, cousins, friends, neighbors and all who knew her. Service for Sandra will be held Tuesday April 30, 2013. 11:00am at McPhersons Funeral Home in Cranbrook. Donations on Sandra’s behalf can be made to East Kootenay Foundation of Health in the ICU Department.
