By Jennifer Lang Cloverdale resident Rick Gill was recognized in the House of Commons in Ottawa last week for his work with charity Hoops 4 Hope and Inuit youth. MP Russ Hiebert (South Surrey-White Rock-Cloverdale) delivered a short statement describing how the 6 foot 7 inch Gill – a former professional basketball player – is using his “unique talents” to help young people. Gill is the Canadian volunteer director of Hoops 4 Hope, a charity that uses basketball and other sports to help youth in Af-

rica and the arctic. The program trains local coaches, builds courts, and runs practices and tournaments along with feeding children in communities hit by poverty, crime and HIV/AIDS. Gill, a father of two, organized a Vancouver-area drive for sports equipment several years ago to help youth in South Africa. Earlier this year, he spent two weeks in Nunavut to launch a Hoops 4 Hope initiative there. “Rick Gill has been taking his inspirational message to young people in Canada’s arctic,” Hiebert said April 26. “This June

World Round-Up returns Godfathers of modern skateboarding ready for ‘freestyle’ showdown in Cloverdale

By Jennifer Lang The top pro and amateur competitors return to Cloverdale this May long weekend for the second annual World Freestyle Round-Up skateboard championships. So be prepared for another thrilling display of a highlytechnical, grassroots sport that’s making a comeback, thanks to competitions like this one, co-organized by freestyle ambassador and proud Cloverdale resident Monty Little. Competitors from 16 countries – including Canada, Spain, the United States, Germany, Japan and Brazil – have confirmed for the May 17 to 21 showdown at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds. Little says he and his crew are running fullthrottle getting ready for four action-packed days of competition and demos at the Cloverdale Curling Rink. More than 40 competitors are taking part, many travelling great distances on their own dime – a testament to their commitment to the sport, says Little, who organized the World Skateboard Championships during Expo ‘86, when he “had seven guys from the Brazil team camped out in my back yard.” (The Canadian campout couldn’t have been that bad – a couple of the competitors are returning this year for the contest. Little still has a Brazilian flag the team gave him back then.) This time around, they’ll be vying for $10,000 in prize money

I relay in memory of the most inspiring, amazing woman I’ve ever known – my mom. This year on June 8, I will be participating in the Surrey/Cloverdale Relay for Life. I am Team Captain for “Walk the Talk Surrey,” a team comprised of members of the organizing committee for the event who hope to inspire others to “Walk the Talk.” When people ask me why I relay a myriad of reasons come to mind: • I relay to help fund research and prevention, and for a future free from cancer • I relay to encourage others to join our fight • I relay in support of those fighting cancer • And most of all I relay in memory of my mom In June of 2010, after a year-long battle with cancer, I lost the most amazing woman I’ve ever known. Through countless rounds of chemotherapy and radiation my mom displayed strength of character far greater than any I’ve

Being a relay participant allows me to meet other caregivers, cancer fighters and survivors. These people come together once a year and work toward a common goal, creating a community of fighters that rally around each other for an experience unlike any other. Time for a change Dear Bill:

There have been too many cuts under the B.C. Liberals To the editor; I was surprised to learn that Liberal candidate for Cloverdale, Stephanie Cadieux has no voice of her own. Last night, I received a phone call asking me to support her, from whom but the man who abandoned ship, Kevin Falcon, but sailed B.C.’s economy into a huge deficit. This desperate move will result in exactly the opposite for me and many others in the community that I spoke with. Perhaps, Cadieux can explain to us why she and her government eliminated the Ministry of Women’s Equality and core funding for all 37 women’s centres, reduced home support and social assistance, eliminated the $100 child exemption, cut childcare funding, removed pay equity from the human rights code, allowed contracting out with Bill 20, cut legal aid, eliminated student grants for women with dependents, and cut funding for services to developmentally disabled people. In the last department that she over-

saw, 40 percent of surveyed workers had been required to cut services and only one quarter of workers believed the so-called 12 point plan would resolve the crises in community living. The Liberals’ early years strategy, allocates $76 million on early years services. This with nothing happening the first year but a study and then a slow increase spread over eight years. In comparison, the NDP will invest $210 million a year assisting children and families in need as well as having a poverty reduction strategy. Up to 8,400 children will be lifted out of poverty and families will save an average of 2,000 per year in childcare costs as well as see an increase in spaces and improvement in early learning. Sorry, my vote this time will go to NDP candidate Harry Kooner. He has worked hard for his family and his Cloverdale community and chose to run for the party that will finally put families first. It’s appealing to a younger generation who don’t want to kill themselves.” Freestyle dates back to the early 1960s, and has waxed and waned in popularity over the decades. Veteran U.S. competitor Lynn Cooper has been at it for more than 38 years, starting out when the first precision ball bearing and urethane wheels started appearing. When freeskating (think Tony Hawks) took off in the 1990s, Cooper says freestyle sort of died out again. But it’s making a comeback, fueled by the fact that the top freestylers are still a force to be reckoned with. “Freestyle continues to grow and some of us are still out here trying to promote it,” Cooper says in a video posted to www.theworldroundup.com, the competition’s website. “It’s really exciting to see it finally taking off.” The World Round-Up features daily competitions for best routine, best trick and a 360 Spin-off, all using a battle format where skaters compete as a group, taking turns to perform individual routines. There will also be freestyle demos throughout the day at other sites on the fairgrounds, and at the Cloverdale Bed Races on May 16 and at the Cloverdale Chili Cook-off the next night at Clover Square Village.

A modern writer’s life By Jennifer Lang Author Melinda Di Lorenzo has written for as long as she can remember. She started writing as a child, scribbling down her ideas and stories, at one point penning a tale based on the characters of her favourite TV show, 21 Jump Street (which starred Johnny Depp as an undercover cop). Later, she studied creative writing and eventually completed her English degree at Simon Fraser University. But the married mother of three girls didn’t get serious about her craft until she took a mid-career coffee break from her job at a popular franchise. Employees who’ve logged 15 years have the option to take a year’s leave without penalty. It was precisely the nudge she needed. “At that point I thought, ‘I’m going to sit down and see if I can write the book.’” She just started writing and the story just poured out onto the pages of the scribbler she uses to write. “It took six weeks,” she says. “It was 80,000 words.” Unlike most writers of contemporary women’s fiction, Di Lorenzo literally works with paper and pen. “I don’t have a laptop,” she says. “When you write with a notebook, you don’t hit ‘delete.’” She composes her first drafts

It eventually took over a year to complete her first novel, undergoing a transformation from a part-time working mom to writer. “By the end of it, I had convinced myself I was a writer. That was the hardest part.” Now, just about to turn 35, Di Lorenzo has written four books

(two are published independently). Her latest, Long Way From Home, is an adventure story about a heroine who finds love in the most unexpected places – on the frozen tundra of Russia. Di Lorenzo turned to selfpublishing instead of hunting down an agent and publisher for the most understandable of reasons. “The truth is, I’m kind of lazy.” She went with an Amazon.

Ida Yang of Hazelgrove Elementary won first prize in the Royal Canadian Legion’s poster contest for her entry in the Colour Poster Primary division. On April 12, Cmde. Gord Kendrick and Anne Sharkey of Branch 6 in Cloverdale presented awards to the winning students at four local schools: Sullivan Heights, Fraser Heights Secondary, Erma Stevenson Elementary, Hazelgrove Elementary, and Cloverdale Catholic School. The branch received 120 entries in total. Each year, Canadian students compete in the poster and literary contest to foster the tradition of remembrance.
