By Jennifer Lang Cloverdale resident Rick Gill was recognized in the House of Commons in Ottawa last week for his work with charity Hoops 4 Hope and Inuit youth. MP Russ Hiebert (South Surrey-White Rock-Cloverdale) delivered a short statement describing how the 6 foot 7 inch Gill – a former professional basketball player – is using his “unique talents” to help young people. Gill is the Canadian volunteer director of Hoops 4 Hope, a charity that uses basketball and other sports to help youth in Af-

rica and the arctic. The program trains local coaches, builds courts, and runs practices and tournaments along with feeding children in communities hit by poverty, crime and HIV/AIDS. Gill, a father of two, organized a Vancouver-area drive for sports equipment several years ago to help youth in South Africa. Earlier this year, he spent two weeks in Nunavut to launch a Hoops 4 Hope initiative there. “Rick Gill has been taking his inspirational message to young people in Canada’s arctic,” Hiebert said April 26. “This June

World Round-Up returns Godfathers of modern skateboarding ready for ‘freestyle’ showdown in Cloverdale

By Jennifer Lang The top pro and amateur competitors return to Cloverdale this May long weekend for the second annual World Freestyle Round-Up skateboard championships. So be prepared for another thrilling display of a highlytechnical, grassroots sport that’s making a comeback, thanks to competitions like this one, co-organized by freestyle ambassador and proud Cloverdale resident Monty Little. Competitors from 16 countries – including Canada, Spain, the United States, Germany, Japan and Brazil – have confirmed for the May 17 to 21 showdown at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds. Little says he and his crew are running fullthrottle getting ready for four action-packed days of competition and demos at the Cloverdale Curling Rink. More than 40 competitors are taking part, many travelling great distances on their own dime – a testament to their commitment to the sport, says Little, who organized the World Skateboard Championships during Expo ‘86, when he “had seven guys from the Brazil team camped out in my back yard.” (The Canadian campout couldn’t have been that bad – a couple of the competitors are returning this year for the contest. Little still has a Brazilian flag the team gave him back then.) This time around, they’ll be vying for $10,000 in prize money

She’ll walk the talk for mom

To the editor;

I relay in memory of the most inspiring, amazing woman I’ve ever known – my mom. This year on June 8, I will be participating in the Surrey/Cloverdale Relay for Life. I am Team Captain for “Walk the Talk Surrey,” a team comprised of members of the organizing committee for the event who hope to inspire others to “Walk the Talk.” When people ask me why I relay a myriad of reasons come to mind: • I relay to help fund research and prevention, and for a future free from cancer • I relay to encourage others to join our fight • I relay in support of those fighting cancer • And most of all I relay in memory of my mom In June of 2010, after a year-long battle with cancer, I lost the most amazing woman I’ve ever known. Through countless rounds of chemotherapy and radiation my mom displayed strength of character far greater than any I’ve

Being a relay participant allows me to meet other caregivers, cancer fighters and survivors. These people come together once a year and work toward a common goal, creating a community of fighters that rally around each other for an experience unlike any other. The relay has also given me the opportunity to make a difference and to fight back against this terrible disease. Please join us on June 8. By registering for Relay for Life, you join thousands across Canada in a commitment to fight cancer by raising funds for ground-breaking research and vital community services. For more information on how you can celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to cancer and fight back in the hope of finding a cure, please visit www.relaybc.ca/ surrey2013 or phone 604-533-1145.

Time for a change Dear Bill:

There have been too many cuts under the B.C. Liberals To the editor; I was surprised to learn that Liberal candidate for Cloverdale, Stephanie Cadieux has no voice of her own. Last night, I received a phone call asking me to support her, from whom but the man who abandoned ship, Kevin Falcon, but sailed B.C.’s economy into a huge deficit. This desperate move will result in exactly the opposite for me and many others in the community that I spoke with. Perhaps, Cadieux can explain to us why she and her government eliminated the Ministry of Women’s Equality and core funding for all 37 women’s centres, reduced home support and social assistance, eliminated the $100 child exemption, cut childcare funding, removed pay equity from the human rights code, allowed contracting out with Bill 20, cut legal aid, eliminated student grants for women with dependents, and cut funding for services to developmentally disabled people. In the last department that she over-

saw, 40 percent of surveyed workers had been required to cut services and only one quarter of workers believed the so-called 12 point plan would resolve the crises in community living. The Liberals’ early years strategy, allocates $76 million on early years services. This with nothing happening the first year but a study and then a slow increase spread over eight years. In comparison, the NDP will invest $210 million a year assisting children and families in need as well as having a poverty reduction strategy. Up to 8,400 children will be lifted out of poverty and families will save an average of 2,000 per year in childcare costs as well as see an increase in spaces and improvement in early learning. Sorry, my vote this time will go to NDP candidate Harry Kooner. He has worked hard for his family and his Cloverdale community and chose to run for the party that will finally put families first. thanks for the advice

You taught, No ‘sides,’ just opinions

To the editor; Re: “City Chooses Citizen Bill,” April 25. Congratulations to Bill Reid and his family on being awarded Surrey Good Citizen of the Year. Bill has been a valuable and welcome friend and a considered influence in my life in Surrey, and I am so happy to see Bill once again recognized for his contributions to our city. I wish Bill and his family nothing but the best at this time. Bill has always been a great adviser and I have always appreciated his willingness to support what is good for Surrey. Bill, thanks, you have given me some great political advice over the years. I may not have always taken it, but I appreciate it. As you once said to me, “There are no sides, just differences of opinion on how to do the best for our city and our province as well as our community.” Congratulations Bill…. job well done! Gary T. see on display in Cloverdale will leave them awestruck and wanting more, he promises. Spain’s Kilian Martin, for instance, has an aggressive style mixed with gymnastics, making him a hit on YouTube, where his 20 videos have racked up more than 8 million hits. Little says Martin and other like-minded skaters are moving freestyle into the future. He expects Europeans like Albert Kuncz of Slovakia, Darren Nolan of the U.K., Lillis Akesson of Sweden, and Guenter Mokulys of Germany will also be big contenders in Cloverdale. Other hotspots are Japan and Brazil. Audiences can cheer on up-andcomer Ryan Brynelson of Delta. At an age when most skateboarders have been forced to hang up their helmets, thanks to injuries and wear and tear on their bodies, many of the best Freestyle competitors are still rolling along. “These guys,” he allows, “aren’t teenagers. They’re in their 30s and 40s. It’s appealing to a younger generation who don’t want to kill themselves.” Freestyle dates back to the early 1960s, and has waxed and waned in popularity over the decades. Veteran U.S. competitor Lynn Cooper has been at it for more than 38 years, starting out when the first precision ball bearing and urethane wheels started appearing. When freeskating (think Tony Hawks) took off in the 1990s, Cooper says freestyle sort of died out again. But it’s making a comeback, fueled by the fact that the top freestylers are still a force to be reckoned with. “Freestyle continues to grow and some of us are still out here trying to promote it,” Cooper says in a video posted to www.theworldroundup.com, the competition’s website. “It’s really exciting to see it finally taking off.” The World Round-Up features daily competitions for best routine, best trick and a 360 Spin-off, all using a battle format where skaters compete as a group, taking turns to perform individual routines. There will also be freestyle demos throughout the day at other sites on the fairgrounds, and at the Cloverdale Bed Races on May 16 and at the Cloverdale Chili Cook-off the next night at Clover Square Village.

Of course, the amount of your mortgage payments will depend on the price of the home you buy, the size of your down payment, prevailing mortgage rates and the term and amortization you choose. Answer: Making the change toward healthier choices can be hard because they may go against old habits and behaviours. Travis Steward A healthy lifestyle is best started by eliminating some old habits rather than trying to create new ones over top of them. Take a look at what you eat, what you do for fun, and what you do for work, etc. and identify things that may be holding you back. Do you sit too much watching TV? Do you eat too much bread? Do you work too many long stressful hours? Before you decide to head to the gym, try stopping some old burdensome habits, and you’ll be amazed at how much easier it is to make healthy choices going forward.

Some would argue that the exclusive task of schooling is to focus on academics. In the context of a classroom setting, this is evident with a press to cover the curriculum and a narrow focus on bits of knowledge and skills. Yet, when most individuals reflect on their best classroom experiences, they inevitably recall a teacher that ensured their focus was not just on the three Rs- reading, writing and arithmetic. Rather, the teacher understood that the relationships in the classroom, including his or her own with each student, was a critical factor for a child’s success. Why is this the case? It is important to remember that while each child is unique, possessing different gifts and abilities, children also have common needs. All children need to feel they belong, they are accepted, they are safe and cared for. These needs are first met in a child’s family and also in their relationships with other caring adults. However, it is important for every parent to know, these needs do not stop at the school or classroom doors. In fact, if a child does not feel a sense of belonging, acceptance or safety in a classroom or school, this environment is not optimal for learning. In the end, a caring classroom community meets a student’s needs and serves to motivate and support the academic success and learning of all students.

In one simple word: “Balance”. There is an old saying: A tired dog is a happy dog - but how do we know a dog is in fact “happily tired”? The answer is that the dog has to be “in balance”, both physically and mentally.

Answer: Once a month.

Dogs need to be socialized, not only with their human friends but more importantly their own species. No matter how much you think you know your dogs, no one understands them more than one of their own! They can achieve mental balance after communicating with each other in a way no humans ever can - have you tried to interact with your dog without actually saying anything? They can achieve physical balance after playing with each other in a way no humans ever can – have you tried to chase your dog and be chased non-stop for hours? That’s what we have at the daycare and you will have a happily tired dog back home in time for dinner. – Kevin Ng, Paws to Play

A modern writer’s life By Jennifer Lang Author Melinda Di Lorenzo has written for as long as she can remember. She started writing as a child, scribbling down her ideas and stories, at one point penning a tale based on the characters of her favourite TV show, 21 Jump Street (which starred Johnny Depp as an undercover cop). Later, she studied creative writing and eventually completed her English degree at Simon Fraser University. But the married mother of three girls didn’t get serious about her craft until she took a mid-career coffee break from her job at a popular franchise. Employees who’ve logged 15 years have the option to take a year’s leave without penalty. It was precisely the nudge she needed. “At that point I thought, ‘I’m going to sit down and see if I can write the book.’” She just started writing and the story just poured out onto the pages of the scribbler she uses to write. “It took six weeks,” she says. “It was 80,000 words.” Unlike most writers of contemporary women’s fiction, Di Lorenzo literally works with paper and pen. “I don’t have a laptop,” she says. “When you write with a notebook, you don’t hit ‘delete.’” She composes her first drafts

in notebooks she picks up at the dollar store, and later types them up on her home computer during the laborious and lengthier revision and editing process. It eventually took over a year to complete her first novel, undergoing a transformation from a part-time working mom to writer. “By the end of it, I had convinced myself I was a writer. That was the hardest part.” Now, just about to turn 35, Di Lorenzo has written four books

(two are published independently). Her latest, Long Way From Home, is an adventure story about a heroine who finds love in the most unexpected places – on the frozen tundra of Russia. Di Lorenzo turned to selfpublishing instead of hunting down an agent and publisher for the most understandable of reasons. “The truth is, I’m kind of lazy.” She went with an Amazon.

For writers like Di Lorenzo who choose this route, the job of marketing becomes “I like to much more hands on. Establishing and maintaining a web presence is crucial. “A really big thing right now for fiction writers is blog tours. A lot of people are reading digitally. They’re not going into stores. They’re turning to trusted blogs” for suggestions on new titles worth reading, she says.

MODERN DAY VETERANS

Di Lorenzo writes contemporary fiction for women in the 18-to-60 age group, and always includes a happy ending. “I like to say they’re life stories, not love stories,” she says. “I’m strictly a PG-13 girl.”

say they’re life stories, not love - Melinda Di Lorenzo As a busy mom, she admits it’s sometimes a challenge finding time to write. If she’s not in the zone, it can be impossible for those words to come easily, if at all. But she tries to commit to writing several hours a week or

a day. “I also write during commercial breaks during my favourite shows,” she says. “That sounds really funny, but I just find my spare moments in a day.” Her computer is located in the family’s living room. Civic Responsibility The signs are up, the buttons are being passed around, and the candidates are canvassing the neighbourhoods. It is election time in British Columbia and in a few weeks we will be asked to go to the polling stations and register our vote. You may be wondering what Christians think of all this. You may even ask, ‘Isn’t Jesus the only ruler Christians listen to?’ Well, on one hand you are correct. Jesus is the ultimate authority. The Bible says that Jesus is the “King of kings” (Revelation 19:16). This means that even elected representatives of the people are in positions of authority, only because God has allowed them. The Bible also makes it clear that the purpose of the civil authorities is to restrain lawless activity by being agents for good (Romans 13: 4). The process by which God calls the civil government into power is through us registering our vote. For this reason we encourage all eligible British Columbians Neighbourhood Bible Study at Wired Monk at 16811 60th Ave to become involved in selecting a new government on from 7 to 9 pm on Wednesdays By Mike Schouten May 14th.
