Nurses worried staff changes will affect care By ToBy gorman THe NewS BULLeTiN
A change in how three levels of health care staff provide care at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital has the British Columbia Nurses’ Union worried about what future roles will be for nurses, and how patients will be affected. Last week, the Vancou-
ver Island Health Authority advised NRGH staff and physicians through a letter that ongoing care delivery model redesign, initiated in 2008, would be taking its next step, which includes changing the composition of care teams that serve patients in the medicine, surgery, rehabilitation and transition units at the hospital.

When was the last time you did something for the first time?
According to VIHA, out of the seven units at NRGH where changes are being made, three units will have more staff, two will remain the same and two units will have fewer staff. The nurses union, however, argues that there will be fewer registered and licensed practical nurses and more care aides. u See ‘CARE’ /4

NEWcAStlE AvENuE house fire second in two years. By Chris Bush The News BulleTiN
The News BulleTiN
reporter2@nanaimobulletin.com
Four recent structure fires were triggered by human error or intent. A fire in house at 215 Newcastle Ave. Monday morning was sparked by smouldering firewood. The blaze that broke out shortly after 9 a.m. destroyed the kitchen of the house on the corner of Newcastle Avenue and Bryden Street. Flames were spilling out of the house’s kitchen windows when firefighters arrived, but were quickly knocked down. Fire damage was contained to the kitchen, but smoke damage extended through much of the residence. Ennis Mond, Nanaimo Fire Rescue fire prevention officer, said the blaze was caused by firewood, which the elderly woman who lives in the house, had pulled out of a pot-belly wood stove in the kitchen and placed on the kitchen floor believing the wood was not burning. She then went for a walk with her dog. No one was injured, but it was the second fire in the house related to a wood stove. In September 2011, firefighters battled a blaze after material close to a wood stove ignited. Damage in that case was limited

to the materials near the stove. Following that fire, the woman was ordered to clear her house of extensive amounts of combustible items she had collected over the years. She complied, with help from a local service club, and has since been living at the house. Mond said when he investigated Monday’s fire, the interior of the home had been kept clear of clutter. “The power’s been cut to the house and the water’s been cut to the house, so it’s not habitable,” Mond said.
Karen Lindsay, Nanaimo Emergency Services coordinator, said the woman was given 72-hours food and lodging under the community assistance program, but said she does not know where the woman will go after that time runs out. “She has no family either,” Lindsay said. Firefighters were kept busy with other human-caused blazes over the weekend. A fire at a house on White Eagle Terrace Friday was ignited by a homeowner burning weeds next

Bikers ride to raise awareness about motorcycle safety By ToBy Gorman The News BulleTiN
The grumble of baffled chrome pipes and revving throttles will shatter the usual Sunday morning tranquility of Sands Funeral Chapel this weekend as those who have lost their lives while riding motorcycles are remembered by fellow riders. In its inaugural Motorcycle Memorial Ride, an expected 250 riders will make their way from the funeral chapel to the Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens on Cedar Road where a memorial bench will be unveiled by B.C. Lt.-Gov. Judith Guichon. Sarah Smith, community events coordinator with Sands,
said all of the funeral directors and many of the staff ride motorcycles, and want to pay tribute to the increasing number of riders who lose their lives on B.C. roads every year. “May is also Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in B.C. and we thought it would be good to do because we have so many rider connections in the community,” said Smith. “Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens wanted to participate by offering a small piece of property and a memorial bench for riders who have been killed.” A charity barbecue will take place at the cemetery to help raise funds for the Kids Help Phone, which is also holding its annual

walk on the same day. “We thought if we could raise some money from our event and help out another cause then we should, and our company has taken on Kids Help Phone as a corporate sponsor,” added Smith. The ride begins Sunday (May 5) at 11:30 a.m. with the bench unveiling scheduled for 1 p.m. Riders interested in participating can register online at www. sandsfuneral.com or by phoning 250-753-2032. According to provincial statistics, an average of 42 motorcyclists are killed every year in the province – 203 were killed between 2008 and 2012 – while another 2,200 are injured in crashes.
Speed, distracted riders and vehicles failing to see or yield to motorcyclists are the key reasons for rider death or injury. Motorcyclist fatalities increased 57 per cent from between 1996 and 2012. Last year, the province announced new safety regulations aimed at improving road safety and reducing motorcycle related deaths and injuries. Some of the new regulations included helmets that met minimum safety standards; larger font size on motorcycle plates for easier police detection; and a new rule that requires passengers, including children, to have feet firmly placed on foot pegs or floorboards.

Nanaimo city council approved the first two readings of a bylaw last week that will permit the growing and production of marijuana for medicinal purposes in the industrial (I4) zone. Council made the decision after receiving updated information on changes in the federal regulation of medicinal marijuana. Effective April 1, 2014, the growing of medicinal marijuana is permitted under the Marijuana for Medicinal Purposes Regulation, which is regulated by Health Canada. Medicinal marijuana growing and production is defined by Health Canada as “the growing and production of marijuana to be used exclusively for medicinal purposes, as permitted under the MMPR.” Medical marijuana is also permitted as an agriculture use within the rural resource and urban reserve zones, as the provincial Agriculture Land Commission has determined the growing of the product is considered an agriculture use. Staff and council updated the zoning bylaw and definition of agriculture permits for clarity. For more information, please visit www.nanaimo.ca.
to his home with a torch. “An elderly gentleman was burning weeds with a torch, which eventually ignited his shrubbery, which is about the size of a Christmas tree,” Mond said. The fire extended up into the soffits and gutter of his home and damaged the siding. A fire broke out at an appliance repair shop at the corner of Northfield and Dorman roads shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday after the business owner put an old stove and a non-functioning dishwasher out to be picked up for recycling. “A person or persons unknown came along and lit the dishwasher on fire, which spread to his building,” Mond said. The flames damaged the building’s vinyl siding and weather barrier. Later that morning firefighters also rushed out to a fire at a house in the 5100 block of Hammond Bay Road. People renting the house were having a party and smoking on the deck. They snuffed out their cigarettes in a planter attached to the house under a kitchen window. “A gentleman in the house woke up in the morning with the smoke alarm going off,” Mond said. Shortly after 7 a.m., the resident found his kitchen filled with smoke coming through the kitchen window that had been cracked by the heat of a fire that broke out in the planter. Damage was limited to the window and planter. “It was lucky he got up when he did,” Mond said.

BCNU, said nurses are concerned that the changes will have a negative effect on patients and will hinder their abilities to provide the best care possible. She said VIHA wants to replace registered nurses for some duties with care aides, who have significantly less training. “For example, when a nurse walks somebody to the bathroom, an LPN or RN is doing an assessment of a whole multitude of things,” said Taylor. “What their gait is, can they walk on their own, do they need help, are they short of breath, do they get dizzy. There are so many facets to the job whereas VIHA is saying a care aide can toilet somebody. Well, sure they can, but they can’t do all of the other things.” Taylor said the new model will result in RNs and LPNs becoming supervisors, which is not what they are trained to be. They will also have less time bedside. The decision to implement the redesign was brought in at the same time that the Nurses Bargain-

ing Association staff moved to a new 37.5hour work week as part of the new collective agreement. Introducing the changes at the same time is expected to minimize the impact on staff. The changes are effective in September, and individuals are expected to be notified of their new role, if any, by early June. Though NRGH is one of the first hospitals in the area to see the change, it is likely most hospitals throughout B.C. will see similar patient care models adopted. “The changes will improve both patient c a re a n d h e a l t h outcomes and are being made because the population has changed – today’s population has more complex needs and that means a different approach to care is needed,” said the release. Taylor said she agrees that an increasing number of hospital patients are on average older, but moving to a senior’s care facility-type model won’t improve patient care and outcomes at hospitals.

Rotary book sale supports charity

People still love the feel of a book in their hands. Bob Fenty, public relations chairman for the Rotary Club of Nanaimo, said it still blows him away when he sees the amount of people who love to read hard-copy books at the club’s annual book sales, especially because of the growing popularity of e-readers and e-books. The club’s annual Spring Book Sale starts Friday (May 3) and runs until May 12 at Nanaimo North Town Centre. Fenty said there are about 70,000 donated books collected so far for the sale. He said the Rotary Club of Nanaimo couldn’t raise the money for charity without the support of community members. “We are so happy to have
the citizens of Nanaimo come purchase books from us,” he said. “We really appreciate what they do for us, which allows us to do for the community.” Money raised from the book sale is used by the Rotary club to fund charitable projects. It supports five innercity schools in the Nanaimo area and other organizations such as The Boys and Girls Club. The money also helps Nanaimo Rotary Club continue its international charity work. For the past five years the club has been working with a school in Sunyani, a city in Ghana. The club isn’t allowed to fund building the school, but has been giving money to purchase school supplies. The Rotary Club recently donated $50,000 to the emergency department of Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. “It’s the largest contribution our club has ever done in its history,” said Fenty about giving the money in one donation. The club hosts a spring and

Stories of how Kids Help Phone counsellors help youth dealing with suicidal thoughts, bullying, depression and a range of other issues really hit home for Nanaimo dad Jason Kozubal. “They are just hearttugging messages,” he said of the Stories of Hope blog on the Walk So Kids Can Talk website. “It just really reinforces how much of a difference it makes. Having an organization like this is an outlet for kids, it helps them deal with situations.” Kozubal said sometimes youth don’t want to talk to their parents or other adults they know about their problems, whether it deals with a mental disorder, feeling anxious about school or experiencing suicidal thoughts, and he’s glad the Kids Help Phone program is there if his three children ever need it. “At least there’s another option,” he

It operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week all year-round for any youth who wants to talk about anything. In 2010, the organization estimates it had more than 225,000 counselling contacts with youth across Canada and the counsellors assisted kids more than 4,300 times a week either through phone or web consultation. To help keep this service available to youth, fundraising walks are held across the country every year and for the 11th year, there will be one in Nanaimo. Kozubal, on the organizing committee for the Nanaimo walk, said it is the largest fundraiser of the year for Kids Help Phone and each year, the local event raises between $15,000 and $20,000. Support for the event comes from many community groups and businesses, he said.

Campaigns promise to boost agriculture By Tom FleTcher BlACk Press
Relief from carbon tax on farms and promotion of B.C.-grown agricultural products are key promises in the campaign for the May 14 provincial election. The B.C. Liberal Party and the NDP have argued for a decade about the best way to promote local food consumption. The NDP platform promises to reinstate the “Buy B.C.” program that identifies products grown anywhere in the province. The B.C. Liberal government ended that program, and in 2012 it committed $2 million to regional “Buy Local” promotions that they say are more adaptable to local needs. The party’s current platform promises to double that funding to “promote 50- and 100mile diets.” Neither party is specific about assistance for fruit tree growers. The NDP pledges to “help orchardists with replanting and other costs,” while the B.C. Liberals offer to “begin work on a permanent and sustainable fruit tree replant program, to be implemented following the current threeyear, $2 million program.” In its pre-election budget, the B.C. Liberal government has offered $20 million in carbon tax relief for greenhouse and flower growers, in addition to an exemption for coloured gasoline and diesel used on farms. The B.C. Green Party proposes major reforms, including phasing out synthetic chemical pesticides, banning genetically modified crops such as canola and removing taxes on value-added B.C. products such as juices and wines. Platform highlights: u Liberals promise a new meat inspection system by 2014, including a new “Certified B.C. Beef” brand. u NDP promises $8 million per year starting in 2014 for agriculture programs. Plans include pilot programs to use B.C. produce in hospitals and long-term care facilities. u The Conservative platform promises only to “introduce policies that support, farmers, ranchers and others.” u The B.C. Green Party would prohibit further release of top-rated land from the Agricultural Land Reserve. editor@nanaimobulletin.com

Seniors population key to health care

spENdINg TOps one-third of tax revenue collected. By ToBy Gorman The News BulleTiN
With 41 cents out of every tax dollar collected by the provincial government dumped into health care, it’s clear what is at the top of the priority list for both election candidates and the people they want to represent. For the Parksville-Qualicum riding, health care takes on an additional importance because Qualicum Beach has the oldest demographic in Canada while Parksville is No. 4. The riding encompasses those two communities, plus Lantzville and Nanaimo north of Rutherford Road. NDP candidate Barry Avis, B.C. Conservative candidate David Coupland, and B.C. Liberal candidate Michelle Stilwell will have to be on top of the health care issue if they expect to emerge as the constituency’s MLA on May 14. “How we’re going to look after health care and how we’re going to provide health care is critical,” said Avis. “A whole new plan also has to be developed for seniors’ care so that we as a party can meet the wishes of seniors who are telling us they want to stay in their homes as long as possible. By staying in their homes they can maintain their social network.” If elected, Avis said he will begin a discussion with doctors and nurses, Vancouver

An example, she said, is the Oceanside Health Care Centre, scheduled to open this spring. “We know in our province that the most expensive way to provide health care is through our emergency rooms and we’re changing how we traditionally deliver health care,” said Stilwell. “This health care centre has a collaborative approach and it’s really the way to go. It’s going to be great for the older people in the community with more acute health problems.” Coupland, a radiologist at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, sees first-hand every day what is working and what is not in the health care system. “Health care and all social services are important,” he said. “With our aging population we need to reform our public health care system to provide it more efficiently, with patient outcomes, quality access, and cost efficiency as primary focuses.” Key Conservative health care policies state the province has to do a better job of training and retaining health care professionals, placing physicians in remote communities and improving health facilities while improving transparency in funding and spending. Election fever just lukewarm
They say the one time a candidate doesn’t want to discuss the issues is during an election. Judging by Monday’s party leaders’ debate, when the opening question – and probably the most hardball question of the evening – concerned Liberal boss Christy Clark California-stopping a red light, it doesn’t look like this provincial election is going to get voters sitting on the edge of their seats unless someone makes a serious faux pas before May 14. One can’t help wonder why, now that the race is on, there is such scant discussion about education and health care – provincial issues that were perpetually contentious leading up to the drop of the writ. Instead, the debate participants danced around the major issues important to most British Columbians. In short, they used up a lot of time and a lot of words saying very little. Party leaders appear to be avoiding anything controversial and sticking to their scripts, each hoping their voter base will be enough to pull them past the post first. If there was ever a time for want-tobe politicians to hope voters have been lulled to sleep, this is it. Especially when the leaders haven’t presented solid business plans backed by hard figures explaining how taxpayers are going to foot the bill for this province over the next four years. And judging by the lack of discussion about the election or its issues on the streets or in social media, it looks like voter apathy is alive and well with each party’s faithful the only people tuned in to the campaign. Everyone else must be out enjoying the spring weather or watching the Vancouver Canucks in the first round of hockey playoffs. There’s still two weeks of campaigning left, and one can only hope voters get a shot of enthusiasm and press those running for office on what’s important.

That’s exactly the amount Dix estimates will be raised by tax hikes on corporate income, bank capital, personal income over $150,000, carbon tax on oil and gas drilling, and cancelling the B.C. Liberals’ RESP and child tax credit plans. As for deficits, the NDP claims that the B.C. Liberal budget hides a deficit of $800 million this year and similar deficits in the next two years. The B.C. Liberals point to an impressive string of “net zero” wage settlements with public sector unions, the core of their spending control record. Would the NDP continue to hold the line on public service wages, as the B.C. Liberals have done? Dix’s NDP caucus and staff is stocked with former government union officials. Party president Moe Sihota is essentially a direct employee of the same unions. The B.C. Federation of Labour has shaped the NDP’s Labour Code changes, which we won’t see until after the May 14 vote. And how much money does the “fully costed” NDP plan set aside to pay wage increases for its government union brothers and sisters? Zero. Since this is the party that appears to be cruising to victory in the May 14 election, I’ll look at what’s not in its platform and other issues next week. u Tom Fletcher is a legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com.

LETTERS
To the Editor,
Re: Most garden plants are ‘alien’, Letters, April 23. Gregory Roscow is someone who hasn’t gone out to see clear-cut areas, farms and parks which have been taken over by Scotch broom. What separates broom from less aggressive plants we bring into our gardens is its ability to spread rapidly, densely, relentlessly and quickly crowd out other plants. A single plant can produce 18,000 seeds that can live in the soil for more than 40 years. This is not true of an “alien” tomato plant. For farmers like myself, it
is a constant battle to keep broom out of the pastures. Naturally, in our ecosystem, when a field is left unattended, gradually trees move in. But when broom is there, it can quickly cover the whole field, and only rats and feral cats move in. Broom can grow to two or three metres in a few years, smothering young trees and preventing the regrowth of forests. Farms and fields are abandoned here and around the world, as it becomes too difficult and expensive to reclaim the land. Look at photos on Broom-
busters’ website, www.broombusters.org. Every town from Nanaimo up to Campbell River is now actively battling this plant as it takes over not just disturbed land and vacant lots, but estuaries, meadows, green spaces and young forests. Nanaimo is having eight invasive plant removal parties in May. Please go to www. nanaimo.ca/goto/invasives for information. If anyone thinks broom is easy to control, please show us how. We cut broom in bloom. Do you have an easier way?

To the Editor,
Re: Late-night retailer implements all safety practices, Letters, April 25. What’s really disgraceful in Doug Hartl’s letter is not only the content, where he claims that the effort to water down the WorkSafe B.C. rules around late night workers somehow enhances their safety, but the timing, coming as it does on the eve of the Day of Mourning when workers all across the world note the deaths and injuries caused to workers on the job. It’s really disappointing to see WorkSafe B.C. sacrifice evidence-based safety regulations after a lobby based only on the profit motive of late night employers. Grant’s Law was named after a young Maple Ridge gas station attendant killed on the job in

North Americans need to clue in To the Editor,
As three people are killed by two bombs in Boston, the BBC reports 340 Iraqis were killed by bombs in that country. That is 340 people who would not have been killed if the U.S. had not invaded Iraq and left the country in ruins and chaos. Do we as North Americans really believe that Iraqis shed less tears or their hearts are less broken by their family member’s deaths? Don’t forget Stephen Harper was once all for the invasion of Iraq. Our politicians say nothing about the disparity. We need to get a grip on reality and fairness or see our children grow up in a living hell. If we are not fair, we are wrong. It is as simple as that.

Maple Ridge while working alone. The stripped down regulation allows stores like Mac’s to bypass requirements that the door be locked and a window used to exchange money and goods between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. Doug DePatie, Grant’s father, said “When the spotlight was on Grant’s death, WorkSafe scrambled to show they were taking action to protect late-night workers and doing right by Grant. Two years later, with the issue out of the spotlight, WorkSafe B.C. is caving in to employer demands to make workplaces more dangerous.” The best late-night workers can hope for now is that when they are involved in a violent robbery, they are lucky enough to live and have their assault caught on video so the police can apprehend those responsible. Re: B.C. Liberals deserve pre-election implosion, Letters, April 13. Yet another wellmeaning but misguided view of the coming election. Let’s remember all that has happened every time the NDP came into power in B.C. Overly-rich wage increases in several sectors including B.C. Ferries and the teachers and extra taxes imposed on large businesses and high wage earners that crippled the economy and led to recession in the province. And, of course, financial fiascoes such as the fast cat ferries and the surplus that never was. Unfortunately, I am afraid that since we don’t have any viable alternative – the B.C. Conservatives are a bad joke – then we have all those who believe the NDP will make life better when they have never

in proposed cuts to balance out the expected $4.7-million shortfall. Brennan said almost all of staff’s proposed cuts are recommended for approval by the board except for the proposal to move English-stream students from Davis Road Elementary School – the $107,000 staff expected to save will be taken out of supplies budgets – and the proposal to close the print shop was changed to requiring the service to operate on a cost recovery basis. “It’s been a very painful process in terms of what we’ve had to cut from the budget,” he said. For a complete listing of proposals and impact statements, please go to www. sd68.bc.ca. Please see Saturday’s edition of the News Bulletin for more detailed coverage of the budget.
u From /1 The offer included some direct monetary compensation and a proposal that would shorten the time it takes for teachers-on-call to qualify for incremental pay raises, added Brennan. He said some people will be disappointed they don’t get that extra week off, but the shorter break will benefit those families and employees who can’t afford an additional week of daycare or reduced pay. The calendar change was not included in next year’s budget, but it will impact the district’s finances two years from now because trustees were hoping to have those savings to put towards the 201415 budget, Brennan added. Meanwhile, trustees expected to finalize next year’s budget at a board meeting after press time Wednesday. The business committee is recommending the board approve a balanced budget for 2013-14 that includes $2 million in savings identified from this year’s and last year’s budgets as well as $2.7-million

Scuba scrub
More than 135 volunteer divers and safety support teams joined forces at the Nanaimo Yacht Club on Earth Day to search for lost treasures under the club’s docks for the first time in 81 years. Dive teams from Sundown Diving, Nanaimo Dive Outfitters and Sink or Swim Scuba worked to recover items in poor visibility, while support teams comprised of NYC members, dive operators, students from Vancouver Island University and families sorted through boom chains, carpets, umbrellas, tarps, batteries, tools, pipe, chairs, two toilets, tires and bottles. The environmental cleanup and recovery efforts gathered more than 1,800 kilograms of debris. Photo contributed

Singers transport listeners to pastoral landscape BY RACHEL STERN
I
THE NEWS BULLETIN
sland Bel Canto singers want their voices to whisk listeners away to a landscape filled with pastoral beauty, fragrant spring flowers and a touch of bird song on the wind. “I’d like them to find themselves … thinking about how the air feels in the springtime and how there is always a hint of bird song somewhere, with waves lapping or water trickling down the stream,” said Laurene Coleman, marketing chairwoman for the choir. The choir hosts In the Garden, Songs of Love and Nature Sunday (May 5) 7:30 p.m. at the Nanaimo Ecumenical Centre, located at 6234 Spartan Rd. The evening’s program includes Robbie Burns’ classic poem My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose by Canadian Composer Eleanor Daley and Eric Whitaker’s She Weeps Over Rahoon. “I love the contrast between the classic and the contemporary,” said choir director Lionel Tanod, in a press release. Other numbers include Scarborough Fair, Girl from Inpanema, What I Want, Edelweiss and Down by the Salley. “[Down by the Salley] tells the story about a young man. For whatever reason he was impatient and his lady love wanted him to take love easy and he didn’t and he lost her and now he regrets it,” said Coleman. “It definitely brings to mind a picture of young lovers in a natural setting.” The concert also features violinist Trish Clair who will be featured during the Five Hebrew Love Songs performance and will also present several pieces as well as with members of the Nanaimo Youth Fiddlers. “One of our mandates as a choir is to try and provide a platform for young and aspiring musicians,” said Coleman. Coleman has been a member of Island Bel Canto for about 10 years. She said

she loves when audeince members are affected by her singing. “It’s always wonderful to look out in the audience and see people who are visibly moved by what you are singing – that
is a great feeling,” she said. “Even after people that are still in the moment don’t want to applaud because they want that moment to last a little longer – that is a great moment.”

Musicians hold concert to raise money for alternative learning program BY RACHEL STERN THE NEWS BULLETIN
Owning a musical instrument isn’t a luxury many kids in Nanaimo can enjoy but having access to instruments can enrich their lives and create
avenues for expression. It’s a sentiment embraced by James Squissato, a teacher at the junior learning alternatives program. He brought a few guitars to the school and let the students play them. Soon they were gathering during breaks,

“Basically I reach out to recreate some of the rhythms and textures that I hear in electronic music, which are predominantly machine generated,” said Mayer in an e-mail. “The outcome usually doesn’t constitute of a perfect copy, but rather an interpretation or esti-
mation which evokes a similar or the same effect as the original. Because I’m one of the first drummers that has been able to do this successfully I’ve been getting credit for creating a new genre of drumming.” He leads a drum clinic May 9 at John Barsby Secondar y

Concerts at Vault an all-ages affair u From /17 Arbutus Music provided a bass and small amp for one of the students. “Apparently he was over the moon,” said Les Tibbo, who works at Arbutus Music and a member of the band Trinitude. “Hopefully it will help the kids in the long run and thereby be a help to the community,” he said. Tibbo said he believes kids benefit from access to music. “When we first started out we basically had to beg, borrow and steal in order to have instruments for the students,” said Squissato. To help raise money to purchase instruments for the pro-
gram there are two concerts being held Sunday (May 5) at The Vault. James shares her artistic journey Caroline James is determined to share her creative voice with the world. For 10 years James didn’t paint and then the artistic spark came alive. She is showing her latest exhibit, Guide You Home, at Gabriola’s Keep Calm and Carry On Gallery Friday (May 3) 7-9 p.m. and Saturday (May 4) 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be a question and answer session with the artist at 1 p.m. The exhibit is the first body of work she has showed in more than two years. “Powerful beginnings occur in stillness. I spent a lot of time sitting in the studio just listening, waiting for the voice when I started. First I heard, I literally heard these words, ‘collage, start with collage’, then ‘draw’, then ‘oil’...and so it began,” said James in a

Alda Saunders raises questions about art exhibitions with her latest work. Saunders created Artrage: An Esoteric Art Show to explore what belongs in an exhibit and who determines what belongs. She poses the queries, can it be more than pretty pictures, does work need to be framed? Her work varies from acrylic and watercolour paintings to mixed-media collages. The central piece, Artrage, is about art daring to get out its confines. Some of Saunders’s pieces were created without using a paintbrush. Her exhibit is on display at Art 10 Gallery, located in Nanaimo North Town Centre, throughout May during mall hours. There is an artist reception, which is open to the public, Saturday (May 4) from 2-4 p.m. Saunders will also be present to discuss her work Wednesday (May 8) in the evening and May 15 and May 29 during the day. Her exhibit coincides with Art 10 Gallery’s 30th anniversary celebration. For more information about Saunders’s Artrage exhibit please call Art 10 Gallery at 250-756-6136.

Clippers face must-win at Westerns I
NANAIMO LOSES 4-0 to Surrey; needs win Thursday to advance. BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN
The Nanaimo Clippers are down to their last chance at the Western Canada Cup after being soundly beaten by the Surrey Eagles. The B.C. Hockey League champs scored three times in the second period and coasted to a 4-0 win over the host team on Tuesday night at Frank Crane Arena. It sets up a must-win game tonight (May 2): the Clippers versus Manitoba’s Steinbach Pistons. The winner keeps playing; the loser is out. “I want our guys to make sure they recognize what’s at stake here,” said Mike Vandekamp, Clippers coach. Kyle Kramer, Clippers alternate captain, said his team will be energized. “It’s going to be passion from the get-go,” he said. “Everyone knows it’s going to be a do-ordie situation.” The Clippers had intended to treat every game at the WCC that way, but they weren’t close against the Eagles on Tuesday. “The best part of the game was the anthem,” said Vandekamp. He said his team “played OK” in the first period, but noted that it failed to capitalize on a couple of power-play opportunities. “There were stages as the second period progressed where we got outworked a little bit. We didn’t have the same edge to our game that we had had the previous game,” Vandekamp said. The Clippers hardly had any puck possession in the Eagles’

end during the second and third periods. “We were skating and putting Nanaimo back on their heels and creating good scoring opportunities,” said Matt Erhart, Surrey coach. Drew Best opened the scoring early in the second period on a long wrister. Midway through the game Clippers goalie Jayson Argue stopped Brady Shaw on a penalty shot, and then made some more good saves to keep the score 1-0. But the Eagles got two in a two-minute span late in

the second period from Adam Tambellini and Best to take command going into the third. Just 13 seconds into the third, any hopes of a Clippers comeback were pretty much snuffed when Argue won a race to a puck but broke his stick and left a wide-open net for the Eagles’ Michael Stenerson. Michael Santaguida recorded the shutout as shots ended up 36-31 in favour of the visitors. The win puts the Eagles (2-1) into the WCC’s playoff round, whereas the Clippers (1-2) still
have some work to do. The Shipmen won’t dwell on their showing Tuesday against the BCHL champs. “They’re a good team, they just won the league, but at the same time I don’t think we played our best game [Tuesday],” said Kramer. GAME ON … The Clippers and Pistons play Thursday at 7 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena. Tickets will be available at the door, or they can be purchased online at www.nanaimoclippers.com.

Timbermen turn page, open camp The Nanaimo Timbermen know what players they won’t have in the lineup in 2013 after some major trades in the off-season. So now they’re determining exactly what they do have. The Coastal Windows Timbermen senior A lacrosse team opened training camp April 17 at the Nanaimo Ice Centre. “Guys are going to have step up but they’re going to be getting the opportunity to, now,” said Kaleb Toth, the team’s coach. “It’s an exciting time for a lot of these young players because now they’re going to be counted on to produce a lot more.” Roster numbers are always low at this time of year, but increase as players finish their college and pro seasons. In the meantime, the T-men who are in town can still make progress. “Most of the guys, they go to the box by themselves. So they’ve had the sticks in their hands, it’s just that conditioning and that battling and that running against somebody, that’s what you really have to work on,” said Toth. The We s t e r n Lacrosse Association season starts May 17. For season ticket info, visit www.tmen.ca.

Junior A Timbermen play home opener, kind of The Nanaimo Timbermen junior A lacrosse club needs to beat some of the top teams to achieve its goals this season, and it might as well start now. The city’s B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League squad
plays its first home game of the season Saturday (May 4) in Parksville against the Delta Islanders. The Islanders were runners-up in the B.C. final in 2012.
The Timbermen will play the rest of their home schedule in Nanaimo, but this one in Parksville could be a chance to expand their brand. “That’s what we want to do, we try to bring good-
calibre ball,” said Brad Dougan, coach of the junior T-men. “When we had the opportunity that we could play there I was all for it. I want to bring our club in there and show the [Parksville-]Qua-
licum Beach area good lacrosse and hopefully we can come out with a win.” GAME ON … Game time Saturday is 5 p.m. at Oceanside Place. The T-men visit New Westminster the next day. TELUS STORE OR AUTHORIZED DEALER

Peewee Pirates take tourney The Nanaimo Pirates peewee AA baseball team was the class of the Okanagan Spring Classic. The team defeated the Vernon Canadians 4-3 in the final of the Kelowna tournament this past weekend after beating North Langley, Kelowna, Penticton and North Delta earlier in the tourney. Spencer Walton, Logan Taylor, Aden Richardson, Brooks Branchi and Josh Laukkanen all received player of the game awards and Laukkanen and Ryan Humphreys made the all-star team.
VIBI Mariners win once on trip The VIBI Mariners lost the series, but at least the team is coming off a win. Nanaimo’s Vancouver Island Baseball Institute won one out of four games in Lethbridge, Alta. this past weekend against the Prairie Baseball Academy Dawgs. VIBI lost 13-3, 5-2 and 4-2 before ending with a 4-3 win. In the victory Reiley Grose threw a nineinning complete game, striking out seven. Connor Merilees led the offence in that one, going 3-for-4 with a double. In the 5-2 loss VIBI’s Darren Kolk doubled and tripled and scored both his team’s runs. The M’s close out the Canadian College Baseball Conference regular season this coming weekend (May 4-5) in Kelowna against Thompson Rivers and Okanagan.
Nanaimo judo in fine form Nanaimo Judo Club athletes threw down the competition at the Mill Bay Judo Tournament last Saturday. Oscar Torgerson, Tyler Kolopennik, Quinn Golobar and Vanessa Kruger each finished first in their categories. Joshua Dean, Max Kolopennik, Lexi Wood and Jackson Isnor all placed third. Nanaimo Judo Club athletes in the senior divisions are training for nationals in Richmond in July.

Nanaimo News Bulletin B5
The Nanaimo Hornets rugby team had a good run, but it came to an end in the Island final. The Nanaimo RFC men’s firsts lost 46-20 to the favoured Velox Valhallians on Saturday in Victoria.
SENIOR B lacrosse club rebranded.
BY GREG SAKAKI The News BulleTiN
They’re now the Acme T-men, not the DBL T-men, but they’re the same team Nanaimo lacrosse fans have cheered for all these years. The Acme Painting Timbermen take the floor Saturday (May 4) to start another season in the West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association. “We pretty much have the same team we ended last season with, with a couple improvements,” said Shawn Swanson, the team’s general manager. “I like where we’re at.” The Timbermen will be led offensively by Jon Diplock, who is back after leading the league in goals and points a year ago. “Jonny’s a great player that can pretty much do everything,” said Mike Maughan, the team’s coach. “We want to have some secondary scoring so we don’t have to rely on him, but at the same point we want to also do everything we can to help him be successful and use the weapon that he is as much as we can.” Ryan Forslund, Ryan Clark, Kyle

Nanaimo Acme Timbermen players Stephen MacFarlane, Cody Keating and their teammates start the senior B lacrosse season Saturday (May 4).
Noble, Gabe Sutherland, Joey Fendick and newcomer Steve Higgs are some of the other players who will be looked to offensively. The defensive stalwarts are Kyle Couling and Graeme Ross, supported by Nolan Maughan and transition guys like Shane Chalker, Ryan Dietterle, Nick Agius and new additions Cody Keating and Stephen MacFarlane. Aaron Vanderhorst
isn’t at 100 per cent, but could join the mix at any time and be the leader of the transition unit. Ve t e r a n g o a l i e Danny Walters is back this year, joining last year’s No. 1, Pat Mallough. The game plan will be similar in 2013, said Swanson. “It’s a lot of what we did last year – running teams offensively and defensively and getting back and forth,” he said. “We’re

Pirates make homecoming
I
BALL TEAM hosts four games.
The Hub City Paving Pirates (6-7) finally get to be the home team again, after playing 12 straight on the road. The Pirates host the Coquitlam Reds (7-3) on Saturday (May 4) and then play the North Delta Blue Jays (3-3) on Sunday. Nanaimo will be trying to get back up above .500 in the B.C. Premier Baseball League standings after losing three out of four games last weekend against the Victoria Mariners and the Langley Blaze. The Pirates defeated the M’s 3-2 on Saturday to start the week-

end, but lost the rematch 12-8 and then had a tough go of things in Langley the next day, losing 9-1 and 11-3. In the win, the Pirates prevailed despite collecting only three hits. Brady Rogers led the offence with a single, a double and two RBIs.
Aidan Goodall was the winning pitcher, allowing one earned run over six innings. The highlight of the barnburner game was Zach Diewert’s home run, his second of the season. In the first game against the Blaze, Langley’s pitcher Kyle Ross only
needed one more out for a no-hitter but Nanaimo’s T.J. Mah broke up the no-no. GAME ON … The Pirates play the Reds Saturday at 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. and take on the Jays at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Admission $5 or $8 for a doubleheader.

Raw food on menu for monthly tea salon Tea, books, special guests and good conversation are what make Nanaimo’s monthly Tea Salon so special. It’s a civilized, slow paced afternoon – just what many people are craving. The May Tea Salon takes place
Sunday (May 5) from 1-3 p.m. at the Painted Turtle Guest House, 121 Bastion St., and welcomes raw food chef Liz Forrest. She will teach the tea lovers how to make a healthy tea latte and raw treats to go with beverage. Forrest wants to teach people
the fundamental basics of raw food – what the health benefits are and the reasoning behind it. She wants people to understand that it doesn’t have to be “all or nothing” and that just including more raw food with each meal can provide health benefits.
“I am pleased to be a part of the Tea Salon because of the community connection it provides,” said Forrest. “It’s wonderful to just sit and enjoy some tea, books and knowledge with others.” For more information, please call Kimberly Plumley at 250-390-9285. TELUS STORE OR AUTHORIZED DEALER

You guys took great care of my daughter and I and the extralate hours fit right into my crazy schedule. a very Happy tentH birtHday bouquet to Brogan on May 3. Your wisdom, charm, humour and laughter brighten every day. You’re the best. We love you more and more every day. Love from all of your family. a bouquet. I was impressed when Trevor sent Richard and Jack from the City of Nanaimo’s public works department to rescue me. Even though it was the 11th hour just before a weekend, when many had already gone home, they came within minutes of my call with smiles on their faces. They are my heroes. Great work and fabulous commitment to customer service. a Huge bouquet to the person who took care of my dinner bill at Montana’s Cookhouse recently. a sincere and joy-filled bouquet to the kind man who picked up the tab for groceries for me and the four little ones with me at Thrifty Foods in Port Place mall. The kids were so excited to have pizza for dinner and were even more thrilled with your kindness and generosity. I was touched and we all plan to pay it forward. a big bouquet to Clint and staff at Bavarian Imports Auto Repair Ltd. for their honesty and integrity. Your good service has been constant with the variety of vehicles I have brought to you throughout the years.
a great big Hug to the young boy who presented me with a bouquet of flowers in the Country Grocer parking lot recently. His mother said it was an act of kindness. To him I say: You are very special and you made my day. a glorious bouquet of wHite irises to all my wonderful neighbours, friends and helpful strangers from TMP who provided nursing care, dressing changes, food, company, foot massages, and encouragement following my hip replacement in February. I will highlight some special angels who helped me daily: Ben, Briar, Janet, Diane, Marian, Sarah, Janyne. If I missed you – you know who you are. I feel humbled and grateful for the constant, generous and muchneeded support. a luscious purple bouquet of spring blossoms to the hardworking young managers of a south end fast food restaurant. Not only do you excel at your required duties, but you also go out of your way to ensure the safety of staff getting to bus stops and provide a safe sounding board for personal issues when necessary for cohesive teams. You make work fun while maintaining high standards. a Huge bouquet to the person who found my cellphone and turned it in when I left it on the bus recently. Kudos to city councillors Bill Bestwick, Jim Kipp and Bill McKay for attempting to control the yearly taxing and spending habits at city hall. I will remember the three of you come election time.

bouquets a bouquet for the couple in the Art Knapp Plantland nursery who found my wallet where I had laid it down in one of the aisles and returned it to the cash counter where I happened to be standing looking for my wallet. a Huge bouquet of roses to those who attended the Salvation Army’s anniversary open house on Nicol Street. It was a pleasure to provide guided tours and information on our programs and services. As the Nanaimo Corps celebrates 125 years of faith and service, we are grateful for the community’s ongoing support. a bouquet of spring flowers to my daughter and sonin-law for raising the most beautiful and kind daughter, sister and granddaughter. I’m so proud of you. Happy graduation, Taylor. Love, Nana. a Huge tHanK you to Alison, Grant and the team of 1-800-GOTJUNK for supporting Team Tour de Cure of the B.C. Ride to Conquer Cancer. All proceeds from the ‘Not Junk Sale’ went towards our team’s fundraising efforts. a bouquet to the employee at a Harewood gas bar who checked and inflated all four tires on a mechanically challenged, female senior’s vehicle. a bus load of bouquets to the bus driver who stopped the bus for us, even though it was an express, so that we could attend our appointments.
a big, blind beef to the impatient woman I saw cut off a motorcyclist while turning left off Bowen Road recently. Try explaing the dent in the rear right side of your SUV to your husband. I saw the motorcyclist kick the vehicle in anger. an educational beef to people who think non-profit means make no profit. A non-profit must put all profit into the charity, not make no profit. Even thrift stores have overhead and yes, some make a profit for charity. a rotting compost beef about the increase in yard waste disposal fees. My two little garbage cans full of debris have gone from $1 per can to a $5 minimum charge. For two cans, which used to cost me $2 total, the fee has been raised 150 per cent. Two little cans hold far less than a truck, and even the per truck fees are too much. How about some fairness for the average homeowner who does not own a truck? a slobby beef to the driver of a black Dodge Caravan I saw driving by Departure Bay Beach recently for tossing a cigarette butt out the window. Such a beautiful morning, such a beautiful place, such a disgusting act. Have some pride in your community. a beef. How silly to put a loo in a busy area of downtown. I hope it will be cleaned often. a giant beef to a local business owner who doesn’t recognise the hard work of employees and do his utmost to retain them instead of treating them like disposable commodities after their years of dedicated service. a Heavy beef to grocery stores for placing chips and candy bars next to checkouts. So many times, while waiting for the cashier to ring through my items, I grab that extra treat that I don’t need simply because it’s there and because I made the mistake of grocery shopping when I’m hungry.
This Week’s Winner JENNIFFER DAY wins a bouquet from Turley’s Florist.
tHanKs to my neighbour for planting so many tulips.

Norma Beatrice Bellamy
(nee McKinlay)
November 26, 1921 April 1, 2013
It is with a great deal of sadness that our family announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, great and great-great grandmother, Norma. Norma was predeceased by her husband Arthur, (Feb.. 2005) and her daughter Elizabeth (Betty) Paquette (2002). Born of pioneer parents in Youngstown, A1berta, Norma was the elder daughter of 4 boys and 4 girls. Norma and Art married in 1941 in Bonnyville, AB and farmed in that area until the call of the west took them to Terrace in May of 1956. They lived in Terrace until 1973 when they retired to Kelowna. Mother worked first at Traveller’s cafe and then the Terrace Co-op where she stayed for 6 years only leaving to help Art run Art’s Chevron Service. Mother operated a small coffee shop attached to Art’s garage. She was known for her wonderful pies, her laughter and her welcoming personality to her local customers, travellers and neighbours of Lakelse Lake Road. Mother played softball for years and helped establish the Terrace Sr. women’s softball team in Terrace. She was also an avid bowler. Upon moving to Westbank, Norma developed a ceramics studio where she taught many the art of ceramics. They lived for several years in Armstrong before moving to Nanaimo where Art and Norma finally really retired in 2002 where Art left us in 2005. Norma then moved to live in Lake Cowichan for severa1 years before returning to Terrace to be with family in 2011. Norma will be missed by her many nieces and nephews. She was the last of her siblings to depart to a better place. Norma leaves to mourn her elder daughter Elsie Bellamy; son Larry (Laurelle) Bellamy and daughter Carol Tencza. May she rest in peace in the joy of reunion with her many family members who predeceased her.
