SUSAN QUINN ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

Alberni Valley News reporter Wawmeesh G. Hamilton has won the Neville Shanks Memorial Award for Historical Writing, a provincial journalism award, for his coverage of the Hesquiaht apology in 2012. Hamilton’s article, Hesquiaht seek vindication over historical hanging, gave a comprehensive look at the history behind the event as well as present-day reaction from ancestors and politicians on the importance of the apology today. In his acceptance speech, Hamilton dedicated his win to his late father Clifford, whose own love of newspapers fueled Hamilton’s love of journalism. Hamilton also won bronze for best news feature photo in our circulation category (4,000–12,499) from the Canadian Community Newspapers Association. The Alberni Valley News received a blue ribbon from the CCNA for general excellence in our circulation category /(6,500– 12,499), which is the second year in a row we have received such national recognition.

New spar tree goes up the old-fashioned way SUSAN QUINN Alberni Valley News

Jack James has raised so many spar trees in his 50-year logging career, that the joke is he can do it in his sleep. But that didn’t lessen the excitement on Sunday as James led a volunteer effort to raise a new 100-foot spar tree at McLean Mill National Historic Site. The spar tree is a focal point of the steam donkey logging demonstration at the mill. The pole raised in April 2009 had rotted in the centre, so it was cut down and a “new” tree—about 172 years old—was donated

by Todd Thompson. James organized the raising, which was a learning experience for many of the volunteers, he said. “It’s been more than 40 years since I raised one. It was around 1960,” James said. Aaron Thom was to rig the top of the spar tree on Wednesday. The heel boom will need to be assembled, then all the equipment will be moved back into place before the first demo with the new spar. editor@albernivalleynews.com

Ambassador program still needs volunteers WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON Alberni Valley News

T

he Ambassadors program is back for its seventh season and more volunteers are needed to fill the familiar bright yellow jackets, Alberni Valley Chamber of Commerce executive director Bill Collette said. The ambassadors patrol Cathedral Grove and the MV Frances Barkley during the summer months. Volunteers hand out brochures, promote Alberni Valley businesses and tourist attractions and answer tourists’ questions. An orientation session was held on Friday, April 26, at

the Visitors Centre. Mayor John Douglas and Lady Rose Marine Service owner Mike Surrell attended to congratulate volunteers and give a pep talk, volunteer coordinator Gerry Fagan said. More than 27 volunteers showed up to the session and several more who weren’t there expressed an interest in volunteering this year, Fagan said. “We’ve got about 42 people in total but we need about 20 more,” he said. In the past two years, more than 60 people volunteered with the program. But that number fell to 30 last summer, and the program needs help. “We need to get that number back up to 60 this year,”

Volunteers work one of two three-hour shifts per day: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Shifts are either in Cathedral Grove or on the Frances Barkley, he said. The program gets off the ground on June 15 and runs until mid-September. The local program is unique and has served as a template for similar programs in other communities, Collette said. The ambassadors serve a similar role as traffic monitors, directing traffic into Port Alberni rather than through it to Tofino. “We’re trying to get people to stop here and treat themselves to what the Valley has to offer,” he said. The real objective is to get them to the visitors centre. “We’re a conduit to everything else.” Officials are also looking for corporate sponsors to help with

he person killed in last week’s fire at a rental complex on Third Avenue and Melrose Street has been identified. The BC Coroner’s Service confirmed that Vivian Leigh Cudmore, aged 63, from Port Alberni died after the lower suite in which she was a tenant caught fire. According to the Port Alberni Fire Department, the cause of the blaze was a smouldering cigarette. No cause of death has been determined yet. On April 22, fire ripped through the bottom floor of the fourplex. Firefighters from three departments battled the blaze for more than two hours before bringing it under control. The lower suite was

emitting extreme heat when crews arrived and was deemed unsafe for firefighters to enter. Seven residents from three other suites were accounted for but Cudmore was reported missing at the time. Firefighters and BC Coroner’s Service personnel found Cudmore’s body after entering the suite once the fire was extinguished. Some wrote condolences on Alberni Valley News’ Facebook page. “R.I.P. Vivian...she was a really nice lady suffering years of cancer to be taken away in such a sad way,” wrote one person. “May her soul be free to live in happiness and peace.”

Court overturns welfare ruling WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON Alberni Valley News

WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON/Alberni Valley News

Canada Post has completed its public input process dealing with whether or not it will keep its Argyle Street postal outlet open. A final decision is expected in mid May.

T

he feedback is in about closing the Argyle Street Canada Post outlet and all that is left to do is wait for the results. Canada Post initiated a 30-day public consultation period about closure impacts on March 26. The process concluded on April 26. Fewer letters, fewer stamps and less

revenue prompted Canada Post to ponder whether or not the Argyle Street outlet would remain open. According to spokesperson Anick Losier, the feedback will be collected and tabulated then reviewed by a special committee. A final decision will be made in the next few weeks. If the outlet is to close, it will do so within 30 days of a decision, she said. People are communicating with

each other more online and paying their bills that way as well, Losier said. Canadians sent more than one billion fewer letters through traditional mail since 2006, she said. The drop in revenue is forcing Canada Post to make some tough choices. “What we are trying to do is be more efficient with our network, make sure they meet the needs of the community while not becoming a

burden on taxpayers,” she said. If the Argyle outlet closes, its two staffers will be absorbed into other operations, and mail can still be delivered at the Valley’s two other outlets: at Fairway Market and Pacific Rim Shopping Centre, Losier said. Questions about what exact criterion is being used to determine the outlet’s fate weren’t answered. reporter@albernivalleynews.com Twitter.com/AlberniNews

BC Court of Appeal panel has voted unanimously to overturn a ruling that disallowed a Port Alberni woman from receiving government social assistance for life. On March 27, Madame Justice MacKenzie replaced the conditional sentence order on Tiffany Marie Dennis, 35, with a conditional discharge, and with three years’ probation. Madame Justice Hinkson and Justice Ryan agreed with MacKenzie’s judgment. In June 2009, Dennis, 35, reported to Port Alberni welfare officials that she didn’t receive a $431 welfare cheque when in fact she already cashed it. In August 2009, Dennis swore an affidavit before a Justice of the Peace that she didn’t receive a $549 child tax benefit cheque when she’d in fact already cashed it. In March 2010, Dennis told welfare officials that she lost a $340 welfare cheque when she’d already cashed it. In these instances, according to the judgment, she was reimbursed for the money she said she did not receive. In at least one instance she was warned she could face criminal prosecution if it was discovered she lied. In April 2010, Dennis falsified a medical report in order to qualify as a person with multiple barriers, and she bounced cheques to local businesses

for cameras and a computer. Dennis had no prior criminal record and said that poverty and an abusive relationship with a drug-addicted partner influenced her to commit the crimes. The sentencing judge imposed a one-year conditional sentence and three years’ probation based on a joint submission by Crown and defence. After the sentencing, Dennis was notified by the social service ministry that she was subject to a lifetime ineligibility from receiving income assistance. Dennis filed an appeal. She argued that she was unaware she’d be banned from receiving social assistance, and she presented evidence that she is a “low-functioning” individual who suffers from disabilities, including a brain injury and a fetal alcohol disorder, the judgment noted. The Crown sought to dismiss the appeal, saying there was no error in principle, and the sentence was fit in all the circumstances. But a panel ruled in Dennis’ favour, replacing the conditional sentence with a three-year conditional discharge, which carries no benefits ban. “...the judge failed to consider the collateral consequences of criminal convictions for fraud and falsification of a document with intent to defraud,” MacKenzie wrote. “Also, because of the joint submission, the judge did not consider in more depth Ms. Dennis’s background, aboriginal status, and serious cognitive deficits...”

A conditional discharge is not contrary to the public interest in this case, MacKenzie wrote. Dennis has no criminal record, pleaded guilty early, and has serious disabilities. As well, her steps towards rehabilitation included leaving her abusive, drug-addicted common law partner who influenced her to commit the offences, MacKenzie noted. “It would not be contrary to the public interest to give her the opportunity to stabilize her life in order to address her very serious deficits,” MacKenzie wrote. Dennis’ aboriginal background is also a factor in the appeal, according to the ruling. Her parents died young from alcohol related causes; she was placed into the care of the social service ministry at a young age; she likely suffers from fetal alcohol spectrum disorder; has cognitive deficits, and only a Grade 6 education. A conditional discharge is proportionate to the gravity of the offence and the responsibility of the offender, MacKenzie wrote. “The fraud offences are specific, discrete incidents that involve small amounts of money relative to other welfare fraud offences for which discharges have been granted, and they do not indicate a pattern of deceit, planning and deliberation, or greed.” Deterrence and denunciation can still be achieved through the terms set out in a probation order, she added.

Using data from Environment Canada over the past century, Alemany presented average temperatures in the region, which have climbed anywhere from half a degree to two degrees in the past 100 years. One of the most dramatic numbers, in Comox, shows the annual daily minimum temperature has risen from 4.8C in 1935 to 6.4C in 2011. “That’s huge,” Alemany said. Global warming was a topic for discussion during the presentation. “It’s clearly happening and an issue,” Alemany said. “Just from going over so much weather for the weather website, I see a lot of recent research, and it’s not encouraging.” It’s hard to specifically say, however, how global warming could affect the Alberni Valley. “If anything, the biggest change we’re going to see in the valley, is that the jet stream is going to change our weather pattern,” he said. “The only thing you can really be sure of is that temperatures are going to keep rising as long as C02 emissions keep rising.” He added it’s interesting to note that April marks the 75th anniversary of the discovery of global warming, made by an amateur

Money goes back into fund NIOMI PEARSON Special to the News

Port Alberni City Council has directed $45,000 in Land Sale Reserve Funds go back into the pot for future projects, after the cancellation of the Harbour Quay sheet pile project. The funds, which had originally been

accounted for in the 2013 capital budget, would have funded repairs to the steel sheet pile wall at Harbour Quay, as part of a larger project proposed by the Port Authority. The port authority notified the city that the project was cancelled in April, and suggested the funds be allocated

to assist with improvements at Clutesi Haven Marina. Council had several options as to what to do with the funds, including the purchase of additional floats or a washroom trailer. In the end, city staff were directed to put the funds back into the Land Sale Reserve.

History must be respected NDP plan will be ‘borrow and spend’ When the new spar tree at McLean Mill National Historic Site was finally raised on Sunday, it was nothing new for supervisor Jack James. James is an oldtime logger who has worked his way up, down and around the forestry business for 50 years. Now as a volunteer he runs the steam donkey demonstration at McLean Mill. James has raised “too many of these things in my lifetime. I was a high rigger at one time and all I did was raise trees,” he says. While the method of raising the new tree was filed solidly in James’ memory, the same could not be said for most of the other volunteers, who had never done this before. James patiently schooled them in the traditional method of raising wooden spar trees, which were replaced in the 1960s by steel spars. The whole process on Sunday was captured on video as well as in still photos, so we don’t lose this amazing hands-on wisdom. People like James—who has a rich knowledge of the way things were done half a century ago—are becoming scarce. While there are better and more modern methods to log now (helicopter logging has replaced the need for wooden or steel spars), it is important to remember our roots. There are still people around who lived through the age of steam, the electric motor and other critical developments of the past century. The last 100 years can arguably be identified as the most important in terms of mankind’s development (for better or worse); who is going to teach our children about these accomplishments if we don’t celebrate them?

Fourth in a series on party platforms

V

ICTORIA – NDP leader Adrian Dix has finally rolled out his “fully costed” election platform. Major policy announcements had been released previously, but there was plenty more spending added to the total. The NDP’s health care plan is surprisingly modest – more money for home support, residential senior care, mental health and addiction services and a rural acute care initiative totaling $159 million over three years. As health critic Mike Farnworth points out, the residential care increase will allow seniors two baths a week instead of one. Full marks to the NDP for this part of the platform.

Increases to Community Living B.C., children and families programs and aboriginal friendship centres are also commendable. Other NDP proposals don’t inspire as much confidence. Raise welfare rates $20 a month and index them to inflation. Index the minimum wage to inflation too, at a time when inflation can only rise. Set up a new child bonus program to send $70 per month for each child with family income under $25,000. Lesser payments would go to families with income up to $66,000. This ’70s-style family allowance scheme is based on a “child poverty” claim that misrepresents federal statistics of relative income distribution. The program is optimistically budgeted at $210 million a year. Dix insists it isn’t a “big new social program,” which

makes me wonder what would qualify. It would be partly funded by cancelling a B.C. Liberal plan to establish education savings accounts for kids born after 2006. Out with self-reliance, in with the nanny state. Another $100 million is added to hire more teachers, to address the teachers’ union’s oftenrepeated but false claim of “a decade of cuts” in education. Another $100 million goes to student grants, much of it further subsidizing the oversupply of English, education, sociology, women’s studies, journalism and other university grads who eventually discover there is little demand for their degrees. As with welfare, increasing support for bad choices can only yield more bad choices. On a related note, the NDP will revive a ministry

‘The NDP’s health care plan is surprisingly modest.’

of women’s equality, “to promote social and economic equality to all government programs....” As with female candidate quotas, the NDP keeps the flame of ’70s socialist feminism alive. The party totals up its new program spending to $988 million over three years. That’s exactly the amount Dix estimates will be raised by tax hikes on corporate income, bank capital, personal income over $150,000, carbon tax on oil and gas drilling, and cancelling the B.C. Liberals’ RESP and child tax credit plans. As for deficits, the NDP claims that the B.C. Liberal budget hides a deficit of $800 million this year and similar deficits in the next two years. The B.C. Liberals point to an impressive string of “net zero” wage settlements with public sector unions, the core of their spending control record. Would the NDP continue to hold the line on public service wages, as the B.C. Liberals have done? Continued / 11

What’s not in NDP’s budget? From / 10 Dix’s NDP caucus and staff is stocked with former government union officials. Party president Moe Sihota is essentially a direct employee of the same unions. The B.C. Federation of Labour has shaped the NDP’s Labour Code changes, which we won’t see until after the May 14 vote. And how much money does the “fully costed” NDP

plan set aside to pay wage increases for its government union brothers and sisters? Zero. ◆ LETTERS

QUESTION of the week

www.albernivalleynews.com

To the Editor, Re: Trophy hunting not honourable, Letters, April 25. I found Stacey Gaiga’s letter attacking Darren DeLuca’s (and all other) guide outfitters extremely un-factual and misleading. Regardless of her standpoint on the subject, hunting is a part of our economy in B.C., equivalent to other resources such as logging and fishing. Whether you choose to hunt for meat or buy it from the grocery store it is ridiculous to compare hunting an animal in the wild to “ the same as shooting fish in a barrel”. A lot of people do eat bear meat and these guides are working to make an honest living, in turn feeding and supporting their families. People come from around the world to hunt B.C. wildlife and the purpose of the guide outfitters is for these hunters to be guided and properly supervised by professional, experienced guides who are familiar with the animal and the area being hunted.

Election letters policy The Alberni Valley News will not be publishing letters to the editor that we receive from candidates during the 2013 civic election. We feel the letters section is not the appropriate platform for electioneering. Comment: Alberni Valley News, 4656 Margaret St., Port Alberni, B.C. V9Y 6H2 E-mail: editor@albernivalleynews.com

This is to insure that no animals are being “left maimed or orphaned”. For Gaiga to suggest that any of the bears being rescued by the wildlife recovery center are there because of Darren DeLuca, or any of the other outfitters on Vancouver Island, is completely false and writing it in the newspaper does not make it true. The whole idea of selective hunting is to take the largest male, certainly not to hunt mother bears and cubs. I just think that it is irresponsible and unjust to write a public letter with such a strong opinion, supported merely by her own false assumptions. Jen Wallman, Port Alberni

Where’s the BC political buzz? To the Editor, Is the AlberniPacific Rim contest such a foregone

conclusion that the candidates aren’t bothering to campaign? I contacted the BC Liberals about their candidate by e-mail a week ago. They responded quickly to say that they would forward my message to Mr. DeLuca. One of my specific requests in the e-mail was to know when and if Mr. DeLuca would be making any appearances in our corner of the Alberni Pacific-Rim riding. Apparently he showed up on Tuesday for a photo op with the premier. I similarly contacted Mr. Fraser’s team by e-mail through another BC NDP candidate’s campaign, asking for information on any local appearances plus asking to be put on their e-mail distribution list. I received a reply eight days later, but I have had zero contact from them since. Due to her lively

involvement in civic politics, I have little interest in finding out any more information about Ms. SangsterKelly, but I looked her up online all the same. Like the other two candidates, she has a near-static presence online. I asked Scott Fraser about his lack of social media presence two years ago, and he responded honestly that he just didn’t have the time for it. It’s a big disappointment for voters and supporters for a candidate to create an online community during a campaign only to abandon it after the election, but I would still urge Mr. Fraser and the others to make the time. Other MLAs seem to manage. It’s bad enough that Errington/Coombs/ Hilliers is lumped into the Alberni-Pacific Rim riding. We’re economically and socially separated from the rest of the riding. Now, we’re also stuck in a riding in which the candidates have little grasp of how to use modern technology to reach the community. There’s no “buzz” here. Skye Donald, Coombs/ Errington

Appreciate what we have

To the Editor, In a small community, polarization of opinion is evident and overt, more so than in a large city. For me, it has never been clearer and scarier than now, going into the provincial election in May. On the one hand, there is our incumbent NDP Scott Fraser, who has worked tirelessly for causes aiming to preserve our natural environment. On the other, the newly nominated Liberal candidate, Darren DeLuca, who advocates old forest logging and coal mining. Apparently, his tourism business consists of big-game hunting. If we really want to improve our tourism potential, and give the valley a break from exploitation, we need to guard the existing natural assets like never before. With the present status quo here, it feels like only miners, loggers and hunters are welcome, and the rest of us should just quietly pack up and move away. Rayana Erland, Port Alberni

“I perceive that God is not a respecter of persons.” Acts 10:34. “Respecter of persons” literally is “one who receives the face”, and means one who distinguishes between persons on the basis of outward appearances. I heard about a young man with long hair and tattered clothes who entered a church and walked up near the front pew and sat down cross-legged. As the sound of whispering spread through the congregation, an old elder walked up from the back. All eyes were on him as the curious onlookers wondered what he would do. The elder sat down next to him, crossed his legs and enjoyed the morning service. Apparently he didn’t see a long-haired street person disturbing a worship service but a child of God and he wanted to accept as he was. Alberni Valley United Church

Valley SENIORS

Thursday , May 2, 2013 Alberni Valley News

Our writer: Valley Seniors is a monthly feature compiled by Orlando Delano and featuring residents living in Port Alberni seniors complexes.

Seniors salute their volunteers ORLANDO DELANO SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

“I was born next door, in the old General Hospital,” said Mark Phillips, an active community volunteer, while chatting with others in the Abbeyfield living room. “I am 57 years old and I have lived most of my life here in the Valley. I also lived in Victoria for 25 years and I had travelled across Canada five times, all the way to Newfoundland.” While in Victoria, Phillips volunteered at the old Gorge Road Hospital (since closed) at the geriatric unit, and at the James Bay Seniors Home for four years. He says that he came back, in part, because of his family. For almost a decade, Phillips has been involved in assisting the seniors and the staff of Abbeyfield Port Alberni. His duties are varied, especially now that spring is here, he mows the Abbeyfield lawns almost weekly; he does maintenance work as needed; he

spends time talking and socializing with the residents in the hallways, dining room, etc. He is also very well-known in all the Valley senior homes for his musical talent. Phillips, who has a strong and melodious voice, also plays a wide variety of instruments such as guitar, bass, steel guitar, violin, banjo, ukulele. “I usually play with bands, like “Highway 4”, my new group, he says. Phillips has been involved with several musical groups entertaining the seniors in their homes and others in the community at sessions at the Harbour Quay in the summer. “My mother, Marlene Dietrich, a dedicated volunteer in Port Alberni, has been the best example for me on what volunteers can do to make a better community”, he said. “She spends hours and hours in tasks needed to be done.” According to

No Vote, No Voice A Virtual Soapbox for Candidates

statistics, in Canada there are 13.3 million volunteers. In our community we are blessed by the good spirit of the citizens who give their time and effort to assist and support others. This is particularly evident in the homes for seniors in the Valley, where people like Mark Phillips, make a difference in the lives of the men and women of these homes. Thousands of hours are given by them annually by providing entertainment, in the form of musical programs, art sessions and through regular visits to the homes by individuals and organizations. Also, most of the care homes count on volunteer drivers to take residents back to their community and enjoy concerts, recitals, bazaars and other events of their interest. Each organization that care for the elderly and has the mandate to govern and advocate for senior centres and homes in our

Valley is made up of volunteers who perform their job in order to maintain and enhance the quality of life of residents and participants. Just imagine what these homes would do without the volunteers. “Volunteering is a part of what we are as Canadians” was a statement by the National Volunteer Week Committee. “The volunteers strengthen our communities and make our country vibrant.” Annually, the celebration of the volunteers across the country is to recognize the tremendous impact they have in our society and how much we all appreciate their efforts. Seniors in the Valley organize events to express their appreciation to each and all the thousands of volunteers who serve our community. Last week, Heritage Place and Abbeyfield saluted their volunteers at a special event.

Principles For Living by Dr. Carl Weber, BPE (Hon), DC Where Do You Live? Huh? Of course I live in the beautiful Alberni Valley, you answer. Guess again. You live not just in your house with your loved ones but in yourself -- in your nervous system. Our nervous system mediates every function of our being. It recognizes foreign intruders, produces the right amount of bile, determines heart rate and stroke volume, and controls our moods, our ability to run, laugh, cry, see, hear and care. It heals us, connects us to our innate healer and allows us to interface with the world around us. What happens when our nervous system works at 100 %? We live in a world that’s connected, where things run smoothly, where we have only positive selftalk and the person staring back at us in the mirror is regarded with deep love and affection. What happens if our nervous system does not work at 100% because our spine is unhealthy (subluxated)? Then we’re disconnected like an overloaded breaker box, people get ‘on our nerves’, our relationships suffer and we live in our heads, away from our hearts in an unloving and confused state. There is a great intelligence to this universe that is innately in every cell and every space between our cells which keeps everything in perfect balance, perfectly. And what initially may seem horrible – the loss of a job, an accident – can be a gift in disguise. When we’re open to those ‘gifts’, the universe provides us with rich, abundant, and interesting lives. When we’re closed off to these experiences, we can’t grow. When we’re subluxated (interference in our nervous system), it’s difficult to step out into these unknowns because we can’t live in the intelligence of the universe in full faith. If we don’t get that the world is connected because we aren’t connected, I call this a subluxated life. When we live at 100% of our potential, which I call an unsubluxated life, we thrive because we see this overall connection as a regular part of our lives. So I ask you, “Where do you live and is your spine and as a result your home, your nervous system, at 100% of your potential so that you can live the best possible life that you can?” I hope so because you deserve it. Peace, Carl

Stay positive and take your own counsel, doctor says DR. NEILL NEILL Living

W

riting about positive thinking is a bit of a challenge at any time, but a real balancing act during an election campaign. We must recognize the chronic complainers and whiners amongst us, lest we be pulled into their negativity. It is important to remember that complaining about what is tends to produce more of the same. If we focus on creating something better, we tend to manifest that better future. It works the same way with nations as it does with

for our collective futures. Who is paying attention to due process? Many of our candidates make more speeches about what is wrong than they do about how they would create a better future. Sad! Some have a positive focus. Because of a courageous and energetic politician with a positive vision, we have universal health care, a system which no amount of political whining and criticizing could ever have created. We Canadians could never have created our own flag and repatriated our constitution through whining and criticizing. It took vision and persistence on the part of our elected political

challenging for us to stay emotionally positive during an election campaign. Being positive helps us recognize which candidates and parties have the most optimistic vision for the future, as we are bombarded with waves of campaignrelated negativity. If we stay emotionally positive, we are better able to distinguish between true vision and ill-afforded campaign promises in the context of endless speeches, television commercials, radio sound bites and newspaper ads. An election is an invitation to all of us to think about what we want for the future of our province and country. An election gets us to think about what vision we hold

individuals. This is the psychology of manifesting. Furthermore, being emotionally positive and holding a “brightness of the future” is probably the single most important factor in a person’s living a long, healthy, happy life. If we as a society could stay more emotionally positive, there would be a lot less pressure to expand our present health care facilities. The fears that accompany emotional negativity have a depressing effect on our health, selfesteem, and sense of well-being. Negativity wrecks marriages. Negativity hurts children. Prolonged negativity suppresses the body’s immune system. It is particularly

leaders. Unfortunately, many of our political figures cannot seem to rise above complaining about what is. They attempt to control our voting behaviour through fear, not thought. Opposition parties are particularly vulnerable to finding fault with what is, rather than leading us to a vision of a brighter future. I invite you to reflect positively on a bright future for British Columbia, and then take your own counsel and vote. That’s democracy. Dr. Neill is a CentralIsland Registered Psychologist. Healthy Mind & Body

Improve Your Sleep It is easy to overlook the benefits of a good night’s sleep. Without adequate rest a person can be left feeling irritable, distracted and sluggish. Those who repeatedly do not get enough sleep could be facing other health problems as well. For some, the secret to getting a better sleep is modifying their sleeping environment. Information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate insufficient sleep has become a public health epidemic. An estimated 50 to 70 million adults report having a sleep disorder, and women are twice as likely to suffer from insomnia than men. In some instances, lack of sleep or too much sleep might be indicative of a medical condition, but it could just be related to poor sleep hygiene and an uncomfortable sleeping environment. Making some changes could make all the difference. * Start with your mattress. You will spend between seven to 10 hours in your bed each and every night. An uncomfortable mattress could be an underlying factor in your sleep problems. If your bed is several years old, invest in a new mattress and box spring. If you cannot afford a new mattress, buying a mattress topper in memory foam could mask any problems for the time being. * Balance light and dark. It is essential to get at least 30 minutes of natural sunlight each day. In the evening, dim the lights to trigger the body’s internal clock and stimulate the production of melatonin, which relaxes the body into sleep. * Consider white noise. White noise can mask sounds that may distract sleep, such as traffic outside or a partner snoring. White noise can come from a special alarm clock that provides soothing sounds. Many people find running a fan in the bedroom provides the right amount of noise and helps circulate air throughout the room. * Make the bedroom a cozy retreat. Your bedroom should be a relaxing sanctuary. Relaxing blues and purples can be soothing colors to use in decorating. * Avoid distractions. When setting up your bedroom, do not fill it with electronics, such as a computer, tablet and television. These devices could contribute to wakefulness and impede your ability to rest. * Keep cool. Sweating and overheating can keep you awake, so drop the temperature down at night and dress lightly for bed. If sleeplessness becomes a chronic problem and is not alleviated by changing the sleeping environment, visit a doctor.

Walk with Doc in Alberni WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON Alberni Valley News

Walk With Your Doc is happening on Thursday, May 9. The annual event is at Bob Dailey Stadium from 5-7 p.m. and is for people of all ages. “Walking is one of the healthiest things you can do and we all know the value of that,” AV Multiplex manager Ron Doetzel said. “It’s a component of a healthy lifestyle.” The event gives participants a chance to walk one kilometre

with physicians, and coincides with International Move for Health Day. The Public Health Agency of Canada recommends a 150-300 minutes of moderateto-vigorous physical activity per week for adults. It’s the event’s third year in Alberni and the event has grown in popularity each year, Doetzel said. There were 120 people who participated the first year and 600 the second year. “We hope to surpass that this year,” he said. Participants in last

year’s event ranged in age from five to 90 years old. The BC Medical Association estimates that more than 100 doctors and 2,000 patients take part in various Walk With Your Doc events throughout the province. The event is held in partnership with Parks and Recreation, the Integrated Health Network, and the Vancouver Island Health Authority, as well as other agencies. Various vendors will be at Bob Dailey including Walk the

Coast, Rehabilitation in Motion, Jays Lace It Up and Quality Foods. Community nutritionist Helene Dufour will also be giving practical demonstrations on how much sugar and sodium are in people’s daily foods. According to the website walkbc.ca, most everyone is capable of walking; it can be done anywhere and anytime; and is low impact. It is also reputed to have to lowest dropout rate of any form of exercise. reporter@albernivalleynews.com Twitter.com/AlberniNews

Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

63-22 victory over Alberni District Secondary School by the Cowichan Secondary School girls’ rugby team’s full XV set the trend for a B.C. championship by the girls’ sevens on the weekend. The players involved in that tournament plus the rest of the regular roster faced a tough battle from Alberni in the early going last Wednesday at Cowichan

Secondary School. “Port Alberni is a hard, powerful and physically mature team,’’ noted Cowichan coach Brad Skene. “We used this game to test the progress of the squad by starting with a number of rookies. “They battled hard but their inexperience showed against a hard-running and organized Port Alberni team.’’ Cowichan trailed 17-5 at one point but slowly pulled back and went ahead once

Skene brought the team’s senior and more experienced players into the game to gain control. “For large portions of the middle of the game, we played fast, dynamic rugby by moving the ball into space,’’ Skene pointed out. “Later in the game, we were able to place more rookies into the game and they worked hard to keep the lead.’’ Leah Theobald raced away from defenders to score four tries for Cowichan.

Crisanti heads to Cowichan

The Alberni Valley Bulldogs have dealt Mitch Crisanti to the Cowichan Capitals to complete a trade that happened right at the trade deadline. Teal Burns joined the Bulldogs from the Caps at the Jan. 10 deadline. “To get a player at the deadline with Teal Burns’ skill and playoff experience, we unfortunately had to give up a quality...player,” coach Kevin Willison said.
