B.C.’s four major party leaders made their pitch for voter support in a 90-minute TV debate Monday evening, with economic and resource issues dominating. B.C. Liberal leader Christy Clark pressed her attack on Adrian Dix, the front-running leader of the NDP, accusing him of advocating big spending on government programs and restrictive environmental views that deter industrial development. “The NDP plan would rob Peter to pay Paul, hoping Paul will vote NDP,” Clark said. “My plan is to put both Peter and Paul to work.” Dix referred to B.C.’s ninth-place position in provincial job growth so far this year. “Neither Peter nor Paul are working,” he said. Both Dix and Clark pressed B.C. Conservative leader John Cum-

mins on his rosy revenue forecasts, despite a promise to phase out the carbon tax on fossil fuels that would cost the provincial treasury more than $1 billion a year. Cummins responded to Clark’s jab about him being forced to fire four of his candidates for various indiscretions. One of them was accused of impaired driving, Cummins said, adding that one B.C. Liberal candidate is seeking re-election after being convicted of the same offence. Green Party leader Jane Sterk was on the defensive about her long list of promises, including a guaranteed annual income to replace existing social programs, and extensive social programs for rural areas. Asked about her proposal to immediately raise the carbon tax by 66 per cent, Sterk described it as a “gradual increase.” As they have in the first two weeks of the campaign for the May 14 B.C. election, Clark and Dix clashed over oil and gas development. Dix denied there was a plan to impose a moratorium on hydraulic fracturing, saying Cariboo-Chilcotin NDP candidate Charlie Wyse was wrong in referring to one last week. Clark stuck to her five conditions for approving new heavy oil pipelines, refusing to endorse or oppose either proposal to bring more Alberta oil to the West Coast. She pressed Dix on his sudden reversal to oppose an expansion of the 60-year-old pipeline to Burnaby, which has seen increased demand for crude exports.

Donna Grainger, EKFH Executive Director shares a proud moment with EKFH Director Michael Christianson. Submitted Since December 2007 Michael Christianson, a financial planner with Sun Life Financial in Cranbrook, has been dedicating volunteer hours to the role of a director on the board of East Kootenay Foundation for Health. During those past six years, Michael has not just attended board and committee meetings but you may have seen him flipping pancakes, serving burgers, selling tickets or attending

events as his way of making a difference to the foundation’s fundraising efforts. This past week, Sun Life Financial’s Corporate Volunteer Group honoured Michael by making a $500 gift in his honour to support EKFH’s mission to provide funding for the East Kootenay Regional Hospital and other community facilities in complementing the health care needs of the region. Better Off With Bill • On May 14th, we can choose to continue in a positive direction, with low taxes, a balanced budget, a growing economy and a strong independent MLA who puts us first. • Or, we can choose to go back to the NDP. The NDP say they will raise your taxes, will not balance the budget, but will spend an additional $3 billion of your money. Their record is one of economic failure. Their leader has proven he cannot be trusted.

ever to bring this classic story to life. Angus Liedtke stars as Tevye, a poor Jewish milkman and father of five daughters. The traditions that Tevye had once strove to uphold are put in jeopardy when his three eldest daughters decide to follow their hearts and find love on their own terms. From May 9th12th witness the hilarity, budding romance, tragic heartbreak and musical numbers of epic proportions that occur as Tevye’s world is turned upside down. In addition to Angus Liedtke, Brianna Kennedy, Joelle Winkel, Carter Gulseth, Danica

Martin, Ben Smith, Lois Winkel, and Justice Jones lead a talented cast of students grades 10-12. Following director Mary Hamilton, the crew consists of Scott Martin as Musical Director, Jacqueline Morrow and David Popoff as choreographers and Paul Kershaw as set designer. The show will be held at Key City Theatre at 7:30 p.m. on May 9th11th and 2 p.m. on May 12th. Explore the small town of Anatevka as traditons crumble and love is no longer nonsensical in this exceptional Mount Baker production.

Cold weather could not stop shooting match

Photo submitted

Another big turnout for a Bull River Shooter’s Association match. by Bradley Woods The Bull River Shooter’s Association held its second match of the season recently. Members and guests gathered on a very chilly and snowy morning at our range near Fort Steele to test their freehand rifle skills in spirited competition. We started with an open house and were pleased that some brave new souls ventured out to try our sport. We were very proud that so many members arrived early to help our visitors. The match began after lunch and the first few rounds were quite challenging! The berms backstopping the “white” targets were white with snow. Many spotters/scorekeepers had to ask the shooter if they knocked down the target! Soon we were raking the dirt between rounds to get things visible. Eventually the weather settled and the participants revelled in the opportunity to compete. Match winners are as follows: • Silhouette Rifle .22cal B class — G a b y Hernandez (jr) A class — K a l v i n Marsh (jr) AA class—Trudy Phillips AAA class—Kaitlynn Johnson (jr) • Match Champion — Rob McKeeman Don’t think us adults don’t notice that 3 of the 5 category winners were juniors! Raw talent and hard work mean all can do well in this sport and that we can enjoy competing with anyone! We were very pleased to have 6 juniors shooting at this match and hope they continue to enjoy our sport. Sunday the 14th saw a great high power match where shooters must knock down targets

from 200m to 500m… Freehand! 9 shooters tested their skills. 1st place—Oliver Graham (won by shootout) 2nd place—Dale Leask 3rd place—Richard Carere (won by shootout with Rocky Marsh) Overall Match Winner Rob McKeeman

Membership fees for the BRSA are $90.00 for the year (March 1 ~ Feb 28). Additional dependant family members may join for $15.00 each, which covers insurance costs. In addition to insurance (which includes liability protection for members if ever involved in a shooting accident) and

ongoing club expenses, dues cover your participation in 4 club matches, scheduled throughout the season. Juniors compete for free. Membership for those 65 years and up is $35.00 but does not include any match fees. Memberships can be purchased from Rob McKeeman at 250-426-

2794. Memberships can also be purchased at any club match. Anyone is welcome to enter a club match, including non-members, and spectators are always welcome! Our next match is Victoria Day weekend and is our annual invitational match; this year we will be hosting BC Provincials over the long weekend. Participation is limited and you must pre-register by contacting Rob as noted above. We will be conducting our annual range clean up on Saturday April 27. A wealth of information about Metallic Silhouette shooting can be found on the Internet. For information about the BRSA please contact Rob as noted above. New members are always welcome! We look forward to seeing you at the range.

Smart choices – Smart deal. Toyo Tires have a reputation of quality tires for any vehicle or application. You may say they are a “Smart” choice! That’s why when the Smart Family chose Toyo tires so did their neighbours, but for their own reasons. Now there’s even more reasons to choose Toyo Tires – like a smart deal. For a limited time get up to an $80 rebate on select sets of passenger or light truck tires. Now that’s very “Smart”. Toyo Tires… engineered for the real world..

Dan McGifford

The management and staff of Cranbrook Kia are pleased to announce the appointment of Dan McGifford as Sales/Lease Consultant

Dan comes to us with strong background in sales, sales management and customer relations. You may recognize Dan from Andre’s Electronics where he managed the Cranbrook location for the past 4 years. Prior to that, he served as assistant manager at Andre’s in Penticton for 5 years. This background in a fast paced, technologically oriented business makes him the perfect fit for our sales team, as this is also the nature of the automobile industry. In his time in Cranbrook, we’re pleased to say that Dan has gained a real respect in our business community with his commitment to high standards of customer satisfaction and work ethic. Being a family man with 5 children, his interests include martial arts, music and many outdoor pursuits such as camping with his family. Dan believes that Cranbrook and area is a great place to live and raise a family and we couldn’t agree more. Dan is pumped about his new career at Cranbrook Kia and invites all friends, past customers and acquaintances to stop by. Let Dan’s enthusiasm rub off on you as you learn why Kia is now the 4th largest auto manufacturer in the world. If a pre-owned vehicle is what you’re after, stop by and view our ever changing selection. Dan is sure to find you what you need.

Cars - Sports & Imports

The management and staff of the Kootenay Import Auto Group are pleased to welcome Jared McMillan as sales consultant at Sun Valley Nissan. Jared McMillan

Jared comes to us from the prairies for similar reasons as many who fall in love with the natural beauty of our region. After a short stint in the sales field, Jared chose to trade his coveralls for a shirt and tie. He realized that he very much enjoyed being on the front lines, dealing with people rather than in the back shop. His mechanical background serves him well of course in the automobile industry. Stop by today, enjoy Jared’s enthusiasm in providing first rate service and advice. Whether you choose any of the fine line of new automobiles that Nissan offers or from the huge selection of quality pre-owned vehicles at the Import Auto Group, you’re sure to find just what you need.

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling disease of the brain and spinal cord. It is the most common neurological disease of young adults in Canada. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 40, and the unpredictable effects of MS last for the rest of their lives. The MS Society provides services to people with MS and their families and funds research to find the cause and cure for this disease.
