Mosquito season again The 2013 City of Cranbrook Mosquito Control Program is now underway. The Mosquito Control Contractor has been undertaking biological control efforts directed at the mosquitoes in the larval stage. This is achieved by identifying and monitoring sites where mosquito larvae are present and applying a granular mosquito larvicide, Aquabac. This larvicide contains a naturally occurring bacterium known as Bti, which targets mosquito larvae, but does not harm birds, mammals, beneficial insects or amphibians. This product is registered for this use in Canada. The mosquito devel-
opment sites have been carefully monitored and treated with Aquabac. These sites are continually treated throughout the spring and summer. Effective mosquito control must combine the efforts of individual land/ homeowners with those of the City of Cranbrook Mosquito Control Program. Rainfall, snow melt and rising river heights in the spring and summer result in the flooding of many low lying areas which can serve as mosquito development sites. Site monitoring by the Mosquito Control Contractor’s staff is conducted on a continuous basis throughout the late spring and summer to determine the species,

number and level of maturity of mosquito larvae present during this period. Early monitoring of this year’s larvae population indicates residents of the City of Cranbrook can expect a significant number of mosquitos in 2013. Mosquitoes go through four distinct stages of development during their life: egg, larvae, pupa and adult. Eggs are laid on the surface of standing water or on soil that is prone to flooding. When in contact with water during the spring and summer, the eggs hatch as larvae, which feed on plant material and quickly develop into pupae. The pupae then mature into adult mosquitoes, which emerge from the surface of the water. Following mating, adult females search for a blood meal to complete egg development. The City’s Mosquito Control Program can only do so much to curb the mosquito problem. Home and property owners are strongly encouraged to stop mosquitoes before they start, by removing all sources of standing water from around your home.

A challenge to help the Hospice Society Submitted Local business owners Christie and Menno Dueck are challenging the business community to help them raise $10,000 for the Cranbrook Kimberley Hospice Society during Palliative Care Week (May 5-11). “I’ve been a hospice volunteer for almost 3 years now and am extremely proud of the hard working volunteers, board members and of course Jeanne Davidison, our co-ordinator (and volunteer of the year),” said Christie. Christie and Menno, and their businesses Dueck Enterprises and Fisher Peak RV Rentals, usually conduct their “charitable” ways rather quietly. This time Christie says, “We wanted to go public and challenge the business community to join us and provide Help for Hospice.” They have started the challenge with a donation of $500. Monies raised would go toward operating expenses. Operating costs is not a pretty buzz word, but without it there would be no Hospice Society. Palliative Care Week kicks off with the Evening to Remember on Sunday May 5, 6:30 pm
at Idlewild Lake Park. To make your pledge, call Christie Dueck 250426-5460

Vitamin C is required to manufacture healthy collagen, the glue that holds coronary cells together, just like mortar is needed for bricks. Lysine, like steel rods in cement, makes collagen stronger. Pauling claimed it takes a mere 10 milligrams of vitamin C to prevent scurvy, but several thousand to prevent heart attack.

Very few people live an absolutely unremarkable life. As a matter of fact, extraordinary things happen to ordinary people all the time. These things can be large, newsworthy events or merely poignant but heartfelt moments. A new book by Cranbrook’s Janet R. Penner falls into the latter category, but after reading it, you will agree that this woman has indeed led an extraordinary life. Waltzing with Dad - A Gift of Legacy is a memoir that takes the reader along with Penner as she goes to grade school, progresses through her teen years and adulthood and senior citizenship. Along the way she relates the struggles and joys of life, from her relationship with her father, to the first dance with her husband of 54 years and watching her children grow and pursue their own lives and careers. This book makes no political statement and it is not an action-filled page-turner, yet readers

On May 8th, 2013, McDonald’s restaurant in Cranbrook will join more than 1,400 restaurants across the country to celebrate the 20th McHappy Day. On this day, $1 from every Big Mac® sandwich, Happy Meal® and hot McCafé® beverage sold will go to local children’s charities across the country, such as Ronald McDonald House®. In Cranbrook, all funds raised will be donated to Ronald McDonald House BC® since many East Kootenay families depend on the House when a young family member is receiving medical treatment in Vancouver. To help celebrate McHappy Day, a variety of special guests will appear at our McDonald’s restaurant throughout the day, including McDonald’s characters Grimace, Birdie and Hamburglar over the lunch and dinner hours. There will also be a face painter to entertain children and a special performance by the Royal Stewart Highland Dancers. As well, to show their support for this great cause, members of the UCT/ACT service clubs and the Cranbrook Fire Department will be volunteering their time at the restaurant. Children’s Face Painting runs from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The Royal Stewart Highland Dancers will perform at 5:30 p.m. It all takes place onWednesday, May 8th, 2013, at McDonald’s Restaurant, 1405 Cranbrook Street North.

This year the radio auction will begin with the first 8 articles and operate on a rotation basis, such as No. 1 auctioned, No. 9 on board; No. 2 auctioned, No. 10 on board; No. 3 auctioned, No. 11 on board; and so on. There will be an item auctioned every 1.5 minutes. This means any given articles will be on the board for 10 -12 minutes before being auctioned off. By using this rotation system, we feel there will be a continual interest in the auction items. The announcer will give you a warning on the next item to be auctioned. High bids and bidders will be continually announced over the air. When the auction is underway, the items will be sold to the highest bidder as determined by the auctioneer. In the event 2 or more people are bidding on an item at the time of closing, it is suggested you stay on the phone until bidding is completed. The phone bidder will have the last chance to bid. When placing your bid by phone, please advise us of your name and phone number. If you are the highest bidder, you will be contacted. Items can be picked up at the Tamarack Centre during the auction times or on Friday, May 10 from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm and Saturday, May 11 from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm. All donated items by merchants are for goods and services. Purchaser will not be able to redeem for cash or credit against an existing account payable.

Help kids learn to skate by donating to Canadian Tire Jumpstart In Canada, one in three families cannot afford to enrol their children in organized sport or recreation activities because of financial barriers (Vision Critical 2011). Six years ago, Marlee Stein wanted to learn to skate but she didn’t think it would be possible coming from a family of four kids and facing the struggles of a parent battling illness. Through a family support service in her community, Marlee and her family were introduced to Canadian Tire Jumpstart. The Jumpstart program supported Marlee’s skating lessons and skate Canada membership through financial assistance. A year after lacing up her skates for the first time, Marlee decided to turn her desire to skate into a goal...to oneday join the Canadian Olympic Figure Skating team. Through Jumpstart, Marlee is able to continue her skating lessons and is working to achieve this dream. “Jumpstart helped me get the lessons I needed to enter some very challenging provincial and national figure skating competitions in Canada,” said Marlee Stein. “With all the lessons I have taken, I hope it opens up opportunities to eventually become a part of the Canadian Olympic team.” “The benefits of kids participating in sports affects their entire lives,” said Johnny Misley, President, Canadian

Skater Marlee Stein got her start through Canadian Tire’s Jumpstart program. Tire Jumpstart Charities. “Jumpstart is dedicated to removing barriers so financially disadvantaged children can simply participate, and ultimately pusue their dreams.” Kids who are able to participate in organized sport and recreation, outside school hours, gain many short and long term benefits including increased self esteem, greater self confidence, leadership skills, and better grades. Despite the financial hardships many Canadian families face, there is a way to get kids into the game, no matter what barrier. By covering the cost of registration, equipment and/or transportation, Canadian Tire Jumpstart has helped
570,000 (and counting) children like Marlee participate in the sport of their choice. Help kids from your community by visiting Canadian Tire, Sport Chek, Atmosphere, Mark’s and Canadian Tire Gas+ stores as well as Pita Pit locations throughout the month of May to donate $2 in exchange for a red ball, with 100% of all donations going to help kids play. The May campaign will be celebrated on Jumpstart Day on Saturday, May 25, with fun activities taking place at participating Canadian Tire Retail stores across the country, including charity barbeque’s or GoClean waterless car washes. Four steps to build a shed 1. Location First of all, find out about municipal regulations concerning the placement of sheds on private property. Then measure the available space at your chosen location, taking into account what you’ll use the shed for. If
you’re going to store the snow blower there, for example, ensure that you can access your shed at all times. 2. Use Generally intended for the storing of tools, lawn mowers, bicycles, patio furniture, and pool and garden equip-
Insulated Concrete Forms
ment, the shed could also be used as a workshop for a tinkerer or gardener. How you decide to use your shed will influence the surface area, height, and comfort factor. 3. Design Whether you opt for a wood or metal shed, take into account the quality of the construction, its solidity, dura-
bility, storage facilities, upkeep requirements, as well as the quality and practicality of its design. 4. assembLy Ensure that the foundations are solid enough to support the size and weight of the construction. If you are handy, you could build the shed yourself by selecting a readyto-assemble kit or you could have it assembled by a specialist.

ICE choose 10 in WHL Bantam draft Garnet Kazuik, Director of Scouting for the Kootenay ICE Hockey Club today announced the club has selected ten players in the 24th annual WHL Bantam Draft. The 2013 WHL Bantam Draft was for players born in 1998 and playing in the four Western Provinces and selected regions of the United States.
