Just a few months ago it looked like the Edmonds neighbourhood had lost its voice when the Edmonds Business and Community Association (EBCA) became inactive. Now there are two groups vying for people to get involved. Last September, Lindy McQueen wanted to start a new group after the EBCA went dormant. As a former EBCA member herself, she felt the group had become too business-oriented. But former EBCA president Joyce Rostron suggested they first find out what the community wanted, an effort that resulted in a well-attended town hall meeting in February followed by a smaller “world café” visioning meeting. Both McQueen and Rostron put forward visions for their respective groups and set up meetings for interested people to attend. “The way I looked at it is you leave it to the community, where they want to go they will go, and what they want to support they’ll support,” said McQueen. see GENTRIfICaTION, a4

Teacher brings digital classroom closer John Tyler recognized as of 3 ‘Distinguished Educators’ in B.C. Mario Bartel
photo@burnabynewsleader.com
The classroom in John Tyler’s vision of the future won’t have blackboards, not even books. Teachers will learn as much alongside their students as instruct them. Tyler’s efforts to make that vision a reality at Burnaby South and now his new school, Cariboo Hill secondary, have earned the vice principal recognition by Apple as one of only three Distinguished Educators in British Columbia. The biannual program honours educators around the world for their innovative integration of technology in learning.
Tyler’s road to recognition started as a search for a bulk discount on Apple iPads. He’s a strong proponent that computers can level the playing field for all students, allowing them to progress through projects and programs at their own pace, to their own level of sophistication, without the pressure of sideways glances of their peers checking out the comprehension level of the books they’re reading. While at Burnaby South, Tyler gave his students who were having difficulty reading easy access to computers and watched them thrive. Rather than confining them to the book in their hands, the students were encouraged to explore and experience their studies in whichever direction caught their interest.

The classroom in John Tyler’s future world will be digital, without blackboards, white boards or even books. And learning will be as much collaborative with the teacher than taught. His efforts to make that world happen have been recognized by Apple, which recently named him one of three Apple Distinguished Educators in British Columbia.
“It allows them to make connections, says Tyler, whose search for iPads led him to
discover Apple’s Distiguished Educators program and submit his application. “Technology is
changing the way we do day-today activity in the classroom. But that change is happening slowly, sometimes reluctantly. “Our structure hasn’t kept pace with technology, says Tyler. Only a few years ago students weren’t allowed to use their cellphones. Wireless connections in schools weren’t readily available. Today almost every student has a smartphone in their pocket, and Tyler is working to make Wifi freely available throughout the district. A teacher at Cariboo Hill has designed and posted QR codes around the hallways that students can scan for more information about programs and school events. Please see tech teacher, a10

When it comes to the issues, all four candidates in the riding said the hot-button topic appears to be Kinder Morgan’s proposed expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline, which runs from Edmonton to North Burnaby. In her two years of doorknocking as the NDP candidate, Routledge said, “the single biggest issue is the pipeline ‌ Two years ago it would come up every so often, now it’s every night, it comes up a lot.â€? Lee agreed but stressed, “the pipeline for heavy oil won’t go through the Burnaby North riding, it’s actually going to the Westridge Terminal which is outside this riding ‌ There’s no residents near that part of my riding. Of course, we should still think about those things (concerns) but in fact it’s not in the riding.â€? For the record, the NDP and BC Green Party are opposed to the expansion proposal and
C
resulting increased oil tanker traffic in Burrard Inlet. The Liberals are supportive, if it meets certain conditions, and the BC Conservatives are all for it. Although, Burnaby North Conservative candidate Wayne Marklund said, “If the constituents of Burnaby North decide to go against the pipeline I will back them up and I will go against party policy, and I’ve already told that to [BC Conservative Party leader] Mr. [John] Cummins. Lee said apart from the pipeline, the main issue for people is the economy, creating more customers for small businesses, “growing a bigger pie for everybody. “The economy is about jobs and your ability to pay for the necessities of life, Routledge responded. But “the average person on the doorstep doesn’t talk about it in those terms. Instead, residents and small business owners talk about

how the harmonized sales tax hurt them, she said. And small business owners have told her they’re not asking for lowered taxes or cutting red tape but rather more customers. Routledge said that can happen by supporting an education system to train people in fields where they can get well-paying jobs. For the Greens’ Carrie McLaren, apart from the pipeline, better health care and education and more jobs, the big issue for Burnaby North voters is “they’re looking for some change. McLaren suggested the close races between the Liberals and NDP over the years has partly been due to people not seeing viable alternatives, something the Greens hope to change this time around. “A lot of times people say they don’t vote at all, they don’t see anything they want, she said. The Greens have had more requests for campaign signs this election than in the past
but McLaren said the party realistically doesn’t believe it will form government. “Win or lose, whichever party gets in, they’re going to need people to watchdog them. And if we can get Greens in there, to watchdog and let the rest of the province know what’s going on, I think that will really help get more people interested [in provincial affairs]. As for the Conservatives’ Marklund, he’s also finding it a challenge to come out from under the shadow cast by the Liberal and NDP front-runners. “We’re the new oldest party on the block, he said, noting it was formed in 1903 before falling apart, being absorbed into other right-leaning parties decades later and re-emerging in recent years. Marklund is a former Capitol Hill resident, and current Port Coquitlam resident who owns Candu Glass located in the riding. “I’m a businessman first, not a
politician, he said. He’s also had a hard time promoting himself as a politician, after three property owners would not lease their highly visible office space to a BC Conservative candidate, he said, adding Burnaby city bylaws prohibit election signs on city property. As a result, Marklund is running his campaign out of his Candu premises on Douglas Road, and a 44-foot RV borrowed from a friend which, ever the businessman, he mentions to a reporter is for sale if anyone is interested. Which makes him the only candidate in the riding with his own campaign bus, or the closest thing to it. He’s been driving it around town while door-knocking or just running errands, drawing in supporters and curiosity-seekers. “People think it’s a great idea, they think it’s thinking out of the box which is what I plan to do when I’m elected.

Her group ended up drawing 16 community members to a meeting last month. Six of those attendees, including McQueen, formed a steering committee tasked with creating an identity and vision for the new organization. The group has been dubbed Edmonds People In Community Residents Association, or EPIC. McQueen, its spokesperson, said EPIC’s focus will be on organizing community events, giving people an outlet for their ideas, and advocating for its residents. “What we’re looking to do is to build community and you do that by getting people out of their apartments and their houses and you present possibilities for them to participate in things,” she said. “I would like to see an association where all members of our community feel that they belong to a larger version of themselves. That’s my vision. The EPIC vision is very close to that. It’s a caring, gifted, creative and nurturing community.” McQueen stressed she believes there’s room for both groups. “We look forward to working together on projects
where our visions meet.” EPIC’s next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 28, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the community room at Edmonds Community School, 7651 18th Ave., Burnaby. Everyone is welcome. That happens to be the same night as the next meeting of the EBCA, being held 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Tommy Douglas library branch. In recent weeks, EBCA has elected a new board of directors, including Gary Bizzo as president, Kashmir Dosanjh as first vice-president, Darshan Gill as second-vice president and Warren Walker as treasurer. When asked how his 12-yearold group’s vision was different from EPIC’s, Bill Petrovas, EBCA’s communications director, stressed that his group organizes the annual Edmonds City Fair event, with the assistance of $4,000 in Burnaby city hall funds and the organization covering the rest of the event’s $15,000 cost. Petrovas said he could not comment on the new group. “We want a clean start, we wish everybody success in their associations and that they find satisfaction in their work.” As for why Edmonds doesn’t have separate merchants
and residents associations as other communities do, such as Burnaby Heights, he said that’s a result of there not being enough business owners and residents to support two groups back when EBCA it started a dozen years ago. He said it’s still the case that Edmonds doesn’t have a large enough business base to be solely a merchants association. In terms of what sort of community work EBCA will be focused on, he said it is concerned about gentrification in Edmonds and the potential displacement of low-income residents due to redevelopment. “We’re doing an assessment of all our assets in the community, who are the communication channels, what are our deficits, and what can we do within our mandate to help improve our area and community,” Petrovas said. “We’re a year away from launching our full initiative.” Rostron could not be reached for comment before the NewsLeader’s deadline. For more information on the EBCA, visit ebaca. memberlodge.org For information on EPIC, contact Lindy McQueen at jimlin@shaw.ca.
WATERMAIN FLUSHING The City Engineering Department will be commencing its annual program of flushing and cleaning watermains on February 20, 2013 through until May 31, 2013. This activity may cause pressure fluctuations, some discoloration and sediment in the water supply reaching your home or business. These conditions should be of short duration and do not pose a health hazard. If your water appears discolored after our crews have finished flushing, clear your water by running a cold water tap.

A year after first being proposed, a redevelopment plan for the site of the Dolphin Theatre in North Burnaby is ready to go to public hearing May 28. If approved, the Dolphin will join a long list of Lower Mainland movie theatres to close in recent years, including the Ridge, Hollywood and Collingwood in Vancouver, and Station Square Cinemas in Burnaby. The project proposed for 4555 Hastings St. by developer Heights Entertainment would see construction of a fourstorey mixed-used development. It would feature retail at ground level, 11 wheelchair-accessible rental units in the second storey and 20 units of market housing on the third and fourth storeys. NEWSLEADER’S VIEW:
QUESTION OF THE WEEK:
Cost of living
LAST WEEK:
With food, transportation and housing costs rising, sticking to the family budget has become increasingly more difficult in B.C. According to the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, it takes two parents earning $19.62 an hour — each — to support a family of four. The annual recalculation of the so-called “living wage” found the hourly rate necessary to cover rent, child care, food and transportation (after government taxes and levies) jumped 48 cents from $19.14 last year — that’s the equivalent of 2.5 per cent, or nearly double the rate of inflation. We all know that housing costs are to blame for some of this burden but the CCPA study found that rising child care costs, food prices and a four per cent jump in Medical Services Plan premiums were also to blame. The problem is, many working parents don’t even make that “living wage” and are getting by on the minimum wage of $10.25. How are families coping? This is difficult to ascertain but the Burnaby Homelessness Task Force has found that the people touched by homelessness don’t have enough income to pay for the basic necessities of life and can’t find affordable housing. Affordable housing consumes about 30 per cent of the pre-tax income for someone earning a modest income. But for someone earning minimum wage or even a little more, housing can take up more than half their income. That leaves little left over for food, clothes and other necessities, sending many to the food bank, and breakfast and after-school programs for the kids. Other families are making difficult choices to stretch their dollars. Meanwhile, per capita debt, although stabilizing, is still high, suggesting that the Canadian dream, while not dead, is increasingly expensive to maintain. - Black Press

NDP to voters: trust us VICTORIA – When Adrian Dix took over as B.C. NDP leader two years ago, he struggled to communicate, especially in the sound bites of radio and TV. There was a running joke in the legislature press gallery: It didn’t matter what question you asked him, you got a six-minute answer that ended with the evils of log exports. Even more than under Carole James, the NDP railed against log exports. “B.C. logs for B.C. jobs” became one of Dix’s favourite slogans. As the election approached, another Dixism was heard daily: “Say what you’re going to do, say how you’re going to pay for it.” So it was a surprise a few weeks ago when the NDP signaled it would essentially not offer a policy on log exports. They’re going to meet with “stakeholders” and come up with a plan after they get a majority government. This is exactly the same nonpolicy the NDP had in 2009. They don’t have an answer to the industry’s point that the high price gained by premium logs in foreign markets is what
Tom Fletcher tfletcher@blackpress.ca
keeps many loggers working, and subsidizes the harvest of other logs for B.C. coastal mills. Another thing the NDP doesn’t like is private power development. This issue featured prominently in the NDP leadership contest two years ago. Leadership contender Mike Farnworth told the party faithful he would study independent power purchase contracts, and if he found that they are not in the public interest, he would “mend them or end them.” Another leadership hopeful, energy critic John Horgan, allowed that he would “break” contracts if necessary. By this spring, Dix had a new non-position on power purchase contracts. He will “assess them and address them.” The printed platform promises a review “within the limits of existing contracts.” Either they plan

to risk a costly legal battle, or they’re just paying lip service. All you have to do to find out is elect them. Labour code changes are another blank slate. A memo from the B.C. Federation of Labour executive to members last year described how they were working closely with the NDP to rewrite B.C. labour law. The NDP election platform punts this issue until after the election as well, promising an independent expert panel to decide on issues like whether to end secret-ballot votes for union certification. This isn’t just a bad idea, it’s a 30-year-old bad idea. It’s based on the destructive old notion that employers are the enemy of workers, and only a union can protect them. The long decline of union membership in the private sector isn’t caused by employer bullying or secret-ballot votes that protect employees’ freedom of choice. The cause is global competition. The only protection workers have from that is their own efficiency. Balancing the budget? An

NDP government will strive to do that over “the business cycle,” says finance critic Bruce Ralston. Old-timers might remember this one. It’s taken from the NDP’s 1991 election platform. Yes, 22 years ago there was a widespread belief in a predictable four-year cycle of commodity prices and other economic determinants. Whatever was left of that dusty, faded picture was erased with the financial collapse of 2008. If you still believe in a predictable “business cycle,” you may be willing to accept that an NDP-led B.C. will become the first jurisdiction in human history to eliminate poverty, by setting annual targets and paying out borrowed money to low-income parents. On ferries, fracking, union contracts, capital construction and other weighty matters, the NDP’s answer is the same: trust us.

B.C. Liberals fail to respond to regional district election questions Jeff Nagel Black Press
Whether road pricing should finance transit expansion in Metro Vancouver is one regional issue where the clearest lines have been drawn between provincial political parties. It’s one of the questions put to the parties ahead of the provincial election by the Metro regional district on its new advocacy website, localgovernmentmatters.ca. As of Monday, the B.C. Liberals had yet to respond but the NDP, Greens and B.C. Conservatives had all provided answers. Most responses, particularly from the NDP, pledge mainly to work with local government on key issues without taking a detailed position. On the question of enabling road pricing to raise more money for TransLink, the NDP say only they “will be open to a discussion with a reformed
TransLink board.” As for how TransLink will be restructured, the NDP have only said they would put municipal elected representatives back on the board, without spelling out details. The Greens go farthest to endorse higher charges for motorists to drive in the region, saying they support a variety of strategies including road pricing, parking pricing and congestion pricing. B.C. Conservatives are staunchly against road pricing. “Drivers should not be punished with tolls and taxes at every road and bridge to pay for TransLink,” said the Conservatives’ response. The B.C. Liberals, who have been under fire from Conservative candidates in Surrey for introducing tolls on the Port Mann Bridge, have promised a November 2014 referendum on new funding sources for TransLink. B.C. Liberal leader Christy Clark has said she opposes tolls on existing roads and bridges. Clark said the referendum would allow voters to block
new funding to TransLink if they don’t support it, although Transportation Minister Mary Polak had previously suggested the referendum would make voters provide more revenue to TransLink one way or another, by choosing the most acceptable source. Langley City Mayor Peter Fassbender, who is running for the B.C. Liberals in Surrey, said he’s unsure why his party had not yet responded to Metro’s questions, but added they are working on it. B.C. Conservative responses highlight their plans to scrap the carbon tax, although critics question where the revenue would be recovered. The NDP pledge to redirect some carbon tax revenue (now going to corporate tax reduction) to public transit initiatives. The Greens support a higher, more “robust” carbon tax. They say using some of the increase for transit may make sense, but the revenue-neutral model – where income taxes drop as the carbon tax rises – gives people more incentive to choose a lower-emission lifestyle.

BC Conservative candidate Wayne Marklund (Burnaby North) is hopeful his party will be listed next to his name on the ballot come election day, May 14. Marklund and Christine Clarke (Burnaby-Lougheed) are among the party’s four candidates who were left off a list of those being endorsed by the BC Conservatives. Elections BC required the complete list to be filed by the April 26 deadline before a party affiliation could be included on the ballot. The party announced last week it was planning
And this summer every teacher at the school will be issued an iPad Mini and challenged to come up with ways to integrate its use into the way they teach. “The attitude now is, if you’ve got it, you use it,” says Tyler, who envisions a day when teachers will put their lessons onto iTunes that students can download at their convenience and then gather in the classroom to work together on homework projects. As part of his award, Tyler will attend a week-long conference of fellow Apple Distinguished Educators in July to exchange notes and share ideas. But he still hasn’t got that bulk deal on iPads.

to take legal action to force Elections BC to change its mind. Marklund said he was “quite disappointed at first” at the possibly of not having the affiliation on the ballot considering his high level of involvement with the party at a regional level. But the businessman doesn’t plan to let it get him down. He’s even got a plan. “If it doesn’t go through I’m just going to say, ‘Hi, my name’s Wayne Marklund please vote for blank’ because that’s what’s going to be next to my name.” wchow@burnabynewsleader.com

It’s usually the daughter caring for her elderly mother. The caregiver (the daughter in this case) can become mentally and physically exhausted, irritable and resentful. Of course the primary benefits of home care services are that someone caring for their elderly parents can avoid physical and mental burnout, ease or remove their guilt, and spend actual family time with their parent. I was reading a very informative article about ‘caregiver burnout’ last week and noted that all of the same signs and tips around caregiver burnout were the same as what someone may experience with any type of burnout.

that you could be at the end of your rope. So what can you do about it? I’ve summarized a few tips for you that, if implemented, will guarantee you some effective relief. Reach out and accept support – This is difficult for people to do, especially for males. In the caregiving example, support would come in the form of a compassionate caregiver who would provide much needed help in the home. In a more general sense, ask family members or good friends for help. That’s when you know who your good friends are. They help without hesitation. Alternately, connect with local organizations/support groups who specialize in providing help. Take care of yourself – How many times have you read that exercise, good nutrition, and relaxation are the keys to feeling great. That’s because it works. Too many of us read this info and then forget about it five minutes later because we’re too busy to act on it. You decide what’s more important – getting your life back and adding some exercise, or getting that 45 minutes of work done that would have waited until tomorrow.

Have realistic expectations – Be realistic about what you expect of yourself. You don’t always have to be Superman or Superwoman. In a family caregiving sense, this is where a lot of people get into trouble. An elderly parent may (unknowingly) lay on the guilt with comments about how the adult child “should” be providing the care, without considering the exhaustion it may be bringing on. You have to be confident enough to say when enough is enough. Please see Better, A14

We must take initiative and seek to understand the thought process and actions of others in order to relate to why they do things that aggravate us. This greatly helps reducing feelings of tension and resentment – and importantly, can lead to discussion about how to remove the aggravators. This kind of ‘understand first’ thinking is also contagious in a good way. Try it when you are talking to someone and see how powerful it is. Use a phrase like, “Help me understand. Please tell me more about why you…(insert aggravator)” and see where it goes. Try to look at it from their perspective during the conversation. Any one of these tips on their own can provide much relief, but used in combination they become much more powerful. Now quickly read them again while thinking about how you could apply them to your current situation and you might come up with a solution. Or better yet, read the tips just before bed tonight and allow the ‘sleep committee’ to work on the problem while you sleep. Some of the best solutions come to you first thing in the morning. It may be better to burn out than to fade away, but it’s even better to avoid burning out or fading away! Wendy J. : I don’t understand why some people choose to move in together so early in their relationship. I am not talking about young people either. I am amazed that some of my girlfriends 50 years plus have taken the leap after only a couple of months of knowing their partner. Maybe I am too cautious but it scares me Eve Silverman to think of another split up that involves breaking up a household, dealing with financial issues not to mention the emotional stress of family adjustments. Vigilant Dear Vigilant There is no right or wrong in waiting for the right time to cohabit. Actually I find a lot of aging boomers are choosing to maintain two households and still have great loving relationships. We each have our own agenda for doing things and for some it’s faster than others. A major reason some people rush into the inevitable is running two households can be expensive. Or traveling a distance can be an obstacle in time spent together. For others it may be the emotional or sexual needs that trump getting to know somebody better. For some the fear of getting older alone is the driving motivation. The trick is to find the right partner and that

A few thoughts about Mom from readers My mother is a role model. She just celebrated her 28th wedding aniversary with my father and has had two wonderful and successful children in the process. She is an inspiration to me and I love her! Mikhaila Noelle Barnsdale
friends. She was always helping people. She was a role model to me and many others. We said goodbye to Mom, Bertha May McInnis, on April 24, 2008 and I have missed her every single day since. Happy Mother’s Day, Mom! I love you. Ila Appleby
My mom was the classiest, most amazing remarkable woman I ever met in my life. Mom looked after herself very well physically and emotionally—a precious gift to her family and
I lost my mother 15 years ago. Seldom were the words “I love you” spoken in our home but I loved the ways my mother would show it with her actions. The one that stands out most is the way she would introduce me—or any of my siblings—to someone. She would stand erect like a soldier beside us, place her arm around our shoulders, and with her face lit-up with the biggest smile, she’d say “This is MY son.” And she was MY mom. Frank Di Cesare

I love how my mom smiles like the Cheshire Cat now that I am the one raising children. I had no idea how much she sacrificed for us when we were kids until I had my own. Peter Cech I love that my mom lives in the same city as me—Burnaby—and continues to take care of me and my family (She sends food home with us and often invites the adult grand kids for dinner). I love how she also takes care of others in the community. She is an active volunteer at South Burnaby Neighbourhood House and can be counted on to make no less than 200 cookies every special holiday for the children in our programs. She also prepares delicious hot lunches every Friday for the members of the SBNH Seniors Together program. Antonia Beck My Mother’s gift to me was hope. Hard to beat that. I have sometimes been accused of having too much, but she reminds me this is not possible. Patrick Smith One thing I love about my mom is that she’s an “all-in-one” mom. She’s a nurse, a doctor, a chef, a tailor, a lawyer, an accountant, a mechanic, a volunteer, a grandma, and a mother all in one! Happy Mother’s Day! Harman Pandher

Helen Begin was not just my mom but a friend who, as I grew up, was always in my corner to support, encourage, work with and to share her love. I remember she went to work at Sears garden shop at 80 cents an hour to make some extra change so that my brother and I would be able to enjoy the extras that life had to offer. She bought our first TV with her income from that job. I will always remember her smiles, laughter and willingness to be there and root for you at school or when I was in politics. Mom was a special lady, loved her family and her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Thanks Mom. Gary Begin

Moms who love to travel and experience other cultures would certainly appreciate a trip abroad or a domestic getaway to a region of the country they have yet to explore. • Spa treatment: If Mom is still as active as ever, then a day of pampering at a nearby spa is sure to please. Many luxury spas offer packages, especially around Mother’s Day, that make a full-on spa treatment a more affordable gift. Men and women can even accompany Mom on her trip and reap the rewards of being such a thoughtful son or daughter.

’m concerned many British Columbians are more focused on “change” for the sake of change rather than electing the party most likely to foster job creation and financial stability.
Our province’s resource endowment has always been a mainstay of both jobs and the generation of revenues needed to fund social programs. From what I’ve seen and heard, an NDP government would rev-up spending while stymieing resource development through endless environmental reviews or by just saying “no,” driving investment to other provinces and countries. We need new mines and gas fields, pipelines, refineries, ports and processing plants to replace jobs lost by tech change and by events like the pine beetle catastrophe Economic development and the protection of the environment are not mutually exclusive. Yes, we must be good stewards of our beautiful province, but we have the technology to move the economy forward in an environmentally responsible manner. Saying no to new projects will mean job losses and no opportunity for young people looking to join the work force. We also need to focus on balancing the budget, rather than taking money away from social programs to fund rising interest costs. Forty years of experience in business has taught me that too much debt is crippling. It scares me that the NDP have rolled out billions in new spending during this campaign, and their “every dollar is accounted for” rhetoric isn’t credible because their anti-development attitude will reduce revenue at the same time as spending rises. There is truth to the adage, “Those who
Gwyn Morgan fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” The NDP came to power in 1991 and governed the rest of that decade. Investment dried up and economic growth trailed the rest of Canada. A low point came when the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce thanked B.C. for driving growth investment in Alberta. Glen Clark’s 1996-1999 tenure was arguably the most disastrous for B.C. and with Adrian Dix, Clark’s former chief of staff leading B.C., I worry about history repeating. It took many years for the Liberals to repair the damage. During their time in government, North America suffered through a major

recession and yet we now have a triple-A credit rating, higher than the U.S. government, allowing B.C. taxpayers the lowest possible interest rates. Have the Liberals done everything right? Certainly not. The introduction of the HST was badly handled. There have been other gaffes and ill thought-out policies. And while there is a natural inclination for people to vote to change long governing parties, it’s important not to let the NDP sleepwalk to victory without thinking about which party is likely to create jobs and not burden today’s young people with a mountain of debt. I’m not asking that you agree, only that you think through the consequences of your choice carefully.

Region’s ‘living wage’ hits $19.62 Bare-bones family budget covers basic needs only Jeff Nagel Black Press
49TH ANNUAL
MAJOR’S DIVISION HYACK BASEBALL TOURNAMENT MAY 24-26, 2013
Games will take place Friday evening @ 6:00pm; Saturday @ 10:00, 2:45, and 5:30; Sunday @ 10:00, 1:00 and 4:00 (Championship Game) Moody Park, New Westminster Various baseball diamonds The Hyack Tournament is one of the oldest ongoing youth baseball tournaments in BC and is THE signature event of the Little League Season in New West. In all 16 Little League teams will gather in Moody Park to battle for the title of Hyack Champs. The competitors are 11-12 year old Majors Division Little Leaguers from throughout Metro Vancouver (leagues/teams TBA), including two teams from New West. A fun, family-oriented activity and it’s FREE
An annual recalculation of the so-called “living wage” for Metro Vancouver concludes two working parents must each now earn $19.62 an hour to adequately support a family of four. The calculation, published by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, estimates the wage including benefits required for a family of two full-time earners and two young children to meet basic expenses, including rent, child care, food and transportation, once government taxes, credits, deductions and subsidies are taken into account. “The living wage lifts families out of poverty, but it’s based on a bare-bones budget without the extras many of us take for granted,” said report co-author
Iglika Ivanova. Not covered are student loan or credit card debt repayments or any savings for retirement or children’s education. The living wage this year is up 48 cents from $19.14 an hour in 2012 – a jump of 2.5 per cent or nearly double the rate of inflation. That increase is attributed in part to a $28 Monthly living wage budget for Metro Vancouver family of four:
$19.62 per hour living wage works out to $35,708 for each parent working full-time.
Their monthly spending breaks down as follows: Shelter: $1,440 Child care: $1,193 Food: $775 Transportation: $495 Contingency: $229 (cushion against unexpected events) Clothing and footwear: $192 MSP premiums: $133 Non-MSP health care: $133 Parents education: $92 Other household expenses: $729
per month jump in a family’s transportation costs, due to rising costs to own and operate a car and a 13 per cent jump this year in TransLink fares. Rising child care costs, food prices and a four per cent jump in Medical Services Plan premiums were also to blame. Metro’s living wage has climbed from $16.74 in 2008, when the calculation was first made. The CCPA and other advocacy groups are part of a Metro Vancouver Living Wage for Families campaign that urges employers to pay wages that reflect the real cost of living in their communities. They also want government to do more by expanding the stock of affordable housing and pursuing universal child care, national pharmacare or dental coverage programs for children and lower income families. A similar calculation in the Fraser Valley pegged the living wage there at $16.37.

Is Your Child Safe when Grandpa Can't Hear?
Finally! Your longawaited romantic weekend getaway with your spouse is near. Reservations confirmed? Check. Dancing shoes packed? Check. Babysitter lined up? Check. Grandma and Grandpa, who better?
Better recheck that babysitter before you head out the door. Before you hire a stranger, you are going to investigate them pretty carefully, aren't you? But your folks usually get a pass, even if they don't hear so well. After all, they love your kids and whose hearing isn't going downhill?
The current statistics from the Better Hearing Institute are that one in six baby boomers have hearing loss and 3 in 10 of people over 65 have hearing loss; seniors in their 80's have greater than a 50% incidence of hearing loss. However, keep in mind that these statistics don't tell the whole story. Almost everyone knows at least one person who has a hearing loss that is affecting communications but resolutely refuses to acknowledge or do anything about it. If your child's babysitter is one of the 24 million people who need hearing aids and don't have them, there could be serious problems. Effective caregivers need to be environmentally vigilant to assure the safety of your child; the ability to hear is a key component in assuring the safety of your child. The risks of not hearing a smoke or carbon monoxide detector, an intruder, or a child crying in the backyard could be fatal or result in an injury. Spending too much time speech reading while driving can cause a crash, as can failing to hear a siren. Older children have been known to take advantage of an adult's hearing loss to get “permission” to do something the adult wouldn't agree to if they understood what the child said.
on Hastings
A division of GG Hearing Alternative Inc.
3776 Hastings Street, Burnaby, BC
(1 block east of Boundary Road on south side of Hastings) Before heading out for that weekend, consider this: General Child Care A 66-year-old man was aggravated that his wife dragged him in to a hearing evaluation, and decided that he did not need the amplification the audiologist recommended. (His wife just didn't talk right.) 18 months later he was back. While watching his threeyear-old grandson, the child had opened the screen door of the living room while his grandfather was there and wandered down the street. A neighbour found and returned him, and the family forced him to get his hearing checked and get amplification if he was ever again to sit with his beloved grandson. After reluctantly getting his hearing aids, he returned two days later, laughing and shaking his head. “What a fool I have been. This is not bad at all.” If you or a loved one has difficulty hearing, please call Beltone for a complimentary hearing evaluation. Our practitioners have many years of experience helping people hear better. We can even arrange to do the evaluation and the hearing aid fitting in the comfort and convenience of your home.
