The commission also recommends the city consult with other organizations such as Greenways Land Trust, School District 72, and the province. The idea of adding off leash areas came about in early March, shortly after council awarded the animal enforcement contract to Coastal Animal Control. Mayor Walter Jakeway was concerned the new company, which does random evening and weekend patrols, would crackdown on dogs illegally running off leash. “I’m getting lots of feedback that there’s not enough places for people to run their dogs off leashes,” Jakeway said at a council meeting March 5. “I want to ask staff how to increase the availability and size of where people can run their dogs off-leash so we don’t end up with a huge enforcement problem and a lot of very unhappy pet owners.” On Coun. Mar y Storry’s suggestion, council referred the issue to the Community Services, Recreation and Culture Commission to come back with a recommendation for council to consider. Meanwhile, the city has budgeted roughly $20,000 for a second off leash-dog park, similar to Penfield West Linear Park, for 2014. The city is considering building the park at either Nunns Creek Park, on the backside near the baseball diamonds, or at Willow Point Park behind the ball hockey box, located in the lower parking lot.

How can forestry and tourism co-exist?
This is the last full week of campaigning before May 14 provincial election. This week the Mirror asked the three North Island candidates: Q. The Discover y Islands has become a focal point for logging versus tourism. What would your Party do to strike a better balance between the two economic pursuits? Nick Facey BC Liberals Forestry and ecotour-
ism both contribute a lot to our provincial economy, and to our coastal communities. I believe there is room for both in the Discovery Islands. Much of the forest land around the Discovery Islands is already second growth forests, so the fact that these same forests are viewed as beautiful and natural today is evidence we are managing our forests responsibly, and sustainably. British Columbia has some of the world’s most
stringent forest regulations. Among other things, these laws require that forest companies accommodate tourism

tainably and created jobs for local British Columbians. Second, those new trees will be left to grow for decades and then they’ll be harvested again. Third, most of the forest on and around the Discovery Islands was harvested once and now it’s beautiful, healthy second growth.” Most tourism operators, however, don’t see it that way. Ralph Keller of Quadra Island runs a kayak tour business and heads up the Discovery Island Marine Tourism Group which contributes an estimated $22.3 million annually to the
local economy. “With logging we’re talking about a few jobs and few benefits for the local economy,” he told the Mirror earlier this year. “The tourism industry has grown up… yet our concerns are being ignored.” The group is particularly concerned about cutblocks that spoil the view for travellers from around the world. Keller says they’re not against logging, they just want some consideration which they’re failing to get from industry and the government. The group also has

requirements. As a result, in areas such as the Discovery Islands, harvest areas are smaller and are care-
fully designed by specialists to meet the order to establish scenic areas and visual quality objectives as established by the Ministry of Forest Lands and Natural Resource Operations. Long before logging begins, forest companies must share their plans with all interested stakeholders – including local communities, First Nations and tourist operators to address their concerns. This has led to situ-
ations where forest companies have taken extraordinary steps to accommodate the interests of tourist operators. One company installed direct barge log-loading facilities so it did not have to dump or store logs in channels during the peak tourism season. The BC Liberal Party is very much aware that forestry is vital for our prosperity on the coast. Harvesting on the
the support of the Wilderness Tourism Association of BC which also issued its own press release Wednesday. “The viability and growth of B.C.’s tourism industry is in jeopardy, and we are dependent on the consideration and co-operation of governments and other industries using the land and marine resources,” says association president Jim DeHart of Campbell River. “We have highlighted four main issue areas that need to be addressed by the next government: land rights, tenure access and secu-
rity; land and resource use planning; transportation and access; and marketing.” The Wilderness association wants tourism to be an election issue because it’s a key component of the economy. “Direct tourist expenditures on nature-based tourism products in B.C. is approximately $1.5 billion dollars and provides the equivalent of over 26,000 full-time jobs,” DeHart says. “Naturebased tourism is also a major driver of B.C.’s $13-billion-plus tourism industry.” But logging is also a
major economic driver in the province and the truck loggers believe the solutions lie in compromise. “I’ve spoken to BC Timber Sales (BCTS) and they are making changes to accommodate the tourism industry,” says Yochim. “Instead of dumping the logs into the ocean and making a log boom, which would be disruptive to marine ecotourists, BCTS is lifting the wood directly onto barges. They are also doing no barging in the summer months so they won’t conflict with the kayaking season.”
Loggers and kayakers step up their campaigns Campbell RiveR miRRoR
Tourism operators in the Discovery Islands should view logging differently, suggests the head of the B.C. Truck Loggers Association. In a news release last week, executive director Dwight Yochim said tourism and logging operators both utilize the coast, and need to better work together. “Instead of apologizing for a visible cutblock, ecotourism operators need to explain three things,” he says. “The trees were harvested sus-

Right now, there are areas around the Discover y Islands and Johnstone Strait that are increasingly contentious. Simply put, the forestry companies want the logs and the tourism operators need viewscapes to attract customers. I believe that for the common good of the North Island an acceptable balance of interests must be achieved in these areas. I think this is possible, through mediation if necessary, if we bring all the affected parties together to find solutions.
Man missing from Craycroft Island
Sayward RCMP are looking for an 80-year-old Craycroft Island resident. Doug Gordon was last seen Friday, May 3, at home on the island located in Johnstone Strait southeast of Telegraph Cove. The next day neighbours noticed Gordon’s boat idling near his dock, but he was no where to be found. Neighbours conducted a ground
search while RCMP, West Coast Marine and Coast Guard searched the waters near the dock. As of Monday afternoon, Gordon remains missing. According to police, foul play is not suspected and Gordon is known to have some health issues. Anyone with information is asked to call Sayward RCMP at 250-282-5522.

working with forestry companies, tourism businesses and the Ministry of Forests to facilitate an equitable balance of interests. I consider it time well spent because achieving this balance is of vital importance to the overall economic wellbeing of the North Island. Both industries are big employers and provide spinoff benefits for many local businesses. Like the democratic process itself, striking a balance between them often requires creative thinking and compromise by all stakeholders.

Police seek spraypainting culprit On Friday morning, Campbell River RCMP were called to a complaint of graffiti to buildings, benches and a vehicle on 16th Avenue between Ironwood Road and Dogwood Street. Buildings in the 1400 block of 16th Ave. were spraypainted and the culprit(s) even tagged the side of a 2007 red Dodge Calibre vehicle. The mischief occurred sometime between 1-5:40 a.m. “The damage in these incidents can cause thousands of dollars, especially when vehicles are tagged, as they can’t easily be cleaned up and sometimes have to be re-painted,” said Cpl. Poppy Hallam. The spraypaint used in the tagging was baby blue in colour. Police are trying to identify the person(s) responsible and put a stop to this. If you are a store owner/ employee and sold baby blue spray paint recently and you are now suspicious about the purchase, contact RCMP or Crime Stoppers.

Suspension bridge work could soon begin Kristen Douglas
Campbell RiveR miRRoR
Rotary’s Elk Falls suspension bridge project is running on a tight schedule, with BC Hydro wanting the area cleared out by fall when the John Hart Dam construction project should be getting underway. Lorrie Bewza, chair of the Elk Falls Suspension Bridge project, said while construction on a proposed 90-metre long suspension bridge Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit. over the canyon and two new viewing platforms has yet to begin, he hopes
work will start this summer. “Once it’s designed, it should be about six to eight weeks to build,” Bewza said. “We’re waiting for final approval of the project from BC Parks. We have approval in principle and now it’s up to the Ministry of Environment.” Bewza expects final approval to come down once the May 14 provincial election is over. B C Hydro, which contributed $150,000 towards the Elk Falls project, wants complete access to the area during its billion-dollar replacement of the John
Hart Generating Station. The project will force Hydro to close off the existing access to Elk Falls and build a new, 80-stall parking lot off Woodstave Road, just off Brewster Lake Road near Highway 28. Bewza said BC Hydro would like to have the Elk Falls suspension bridge project completed by September, a goal Rotary is still working towards. Bewza said once the project receives final approval, a geotechnical study will be done on the rocks and then a request for rroposals will be sent out .
The project involves a 60-metre high suspension bridge above the canyon that the falls roar down into. The bridge will be accessed from the Millennium Trail which runs from the existing Elk Falls parking lot to the John Hart Generating Station. There are also plans for two new viewing platforms – one which will be accessed from the lower parking lot which provides access to the already existing view point above the canyon. Another 60 metres down the existing user trail would be an access point to the suspension
bridge and the start of a new trail which would descend 10-12 metres down to a second proposed new viewing platform with a direct, faceon view of the falls. The entire project is estimated to cost $550,000, with the bridge eating up $300,000 of that budget. Rotary will spend $75,000, BC Hydro $150,000, and Bewza is hoping for a contribution from Island Coastal Economic Trust. Rotary also expects $25,000 in in-kind contributions as well as $75,000 from other various contributors and donors.

Fundraising efforts continue to save the SPCA to operate the shelter. “With any shortfall, the community will have to make up the difference, in addition to the $100,000 this community raises throughout the year,” said veterinarian Helen Kwong. “Can we do it? Heck yes, we can. Even with this bizarre plan to divide the former SPCA building and give the SPCA about 40 per cent of the old building, we could still make it work.” Kwong said the community is already getting behind the contest, which kicked off May 1,

Animal lovers are hard at work raising money to try and bring the SPCA back to Campbell River. On Saturday, staff at the Campbell River Veterinary Hospital and Dog Grooming hosted Claws for a Cause. For a donation to the SPCA, staff clipped dog claws and bathed willing pooches. The event went handin-hand with the community-wide Go Loonie for the SPCA fundraiser which is trying to come up with the money the SPCA needs to run the Campbell River shelter. The SPCA is offering to provide shelter services for $80,000 but Craig Daniell, SPCA chief executive officer, said it costs $400,000 annually

Question: What is IV sedation?
Some dental offices refer to IV sedation as “sleep dentistry” or “twilight sleep” which are both misleading - IV conscious sedation is designed to relax the patient at a light or moderate level and, in reality, you remain conscious during the procedure meaning you will understand and respond to requests from your dentist - although you may not remember because the drug typically used does two things, Dr. Kevin Lathangue 1. IV sedation induces a state of deep relaxation and a feeling of not being bothered by what’s going on. 2. The drugs used for IV sedation produce either partial or full memory loss (amnesia) for the period of time when the drug first kicks in until it wears off. As a result, time will appear to pass quickly and you will not recall much of what happened - this is likely the reason people believe they were “asleep” during the procedure. Typically, people seek out IV sedation when they are anxious about a procedure or the needle. Although IV sedation is not a pain killer - we can use EMLA cream to prevent the needle from hurting which creates a more comfortable experience. Finally, if you are a person who has postponed your dental treatment due to fear or anxiety - this might be the perfect solution to finally get your oral health back on track. For more information you can call 250-287-7343.

and runs until the end of the month. “The loonie cans are going out fast and furious and we would like to have 200 cans out in the community,” Kwong said. “It’s a beautiful thing to see the entire city come together over such a worthwhile cause.” Last week, Kwong said the community has already raised $9,000 and the city has said it would match donations up to a maximum of $10,000. The city has committed to continue working with the SPCA to come up with an agreement to
bring the SPCA back. The SPCA pulled the plug on its Campbell River branch in late March after the city awarded the animal enforcement contract to Coastal Animal Control for $105,000. The city offered the BC SPCA $58,000 for the kennelling of impounded dogs, an amount the BC SPCA provided in the request for proposals process. But the SPCA declined the $58,000 offer and changed its quote to $95,000 to provide impoundment services.
The city in turn offered the animal impound contract to Coastal Animal Control for $25,000. After Coastal was awarded both contracts, the city offered the SPCA a $34,000 grant-in-aid for animal welfare services, including shelter, adoption and education. The SPCA turned that down too, saying it was already losing thousands of dollars each year on its local operations, but is offering to return to Campbell River and provide shelter, adoption and welfare services for $80,000 per year.

Politics? Nah, let’s talk hockey We like to reflect in this space what people are talking about, what has them glued to their TVs, filling the Internet chat forums. B.C. election? Puhleese. Today, We say: Canucks it’sThe the Stanley Cup playoffs. Life changing? No. Important to the just not built for future of the province? No. A topic the Stanley Cup of conversation more than anything playoffs related to politics? Absolutely. At time of writing, the Vancouver Canucks were on the edge of elimination, down 3-0 to the San Jose Sharks. As usual, the Canucks had an
impressive regular season, winning their division and garnering a top-three seed. Also as usual (despite a run to the Cup final a couple of years ago), the Canucks are showing they are a team built for the regular season and not what really matters, the run for the Cup. They have played nine periods of hockey against the Sharks and aside from the third period Sunday night, their goaltending has been solid. The fact much of the discussion still centres around Roberto Luongo and Cory Schneider is bewildering and is a clear indication both GM Mike Gillis and head coach Alain Vigneault
have done a poor job focussing on what really ails this team. And what’s that? Well, we’re glad you asked. The leadership group on this team, the ones that excel in the regular season, do not have what it takes mentally or physically to compete when the stakes are higher in the playoffs. Have the Sedin brothers even played the first three games? Did anyone other than Gillis think deadline acquisition Derek Roy was going to change his playoff stripes (zero goals in his last 10 playoff games)? Now, if the Canucks win the next four games and take this series, we will be the first to say we are wrong. But we don’t see that happening.

Robron investment insane We thought that the 2008 referendum gave a clear message not to upgrade Robron Park to artificial turf. Walking through the park almost daily and not to see any kids playing there, except on the weekends, that investment would be insane. Artificial grass is unhealthy and unsafe, specialy to young players and ridiculously expensive to maintain. Many people, including some professional soccer players, have spoken out against the use of artificial grass. In 2007, soccer celebrity David Beckham refused to play against Toronto FC at Toronto’s home stadium, BMO Field, because of its artificial turf. Calculated at a yearly maintenance cost of around $14,000 for a natural grass field in a university stadium, the cost of upkeep for an artificial turf was almost $23,000. Councilors, please look at this issue from many angles before you let it happen. On another subject, on our daily walk through the park, we saw peope playing lacrosse maybe twice - playing on the grass, not in the newly built “monster”. And what about those unnecessary (and probably expensive) american football goals replacing regular soccer goals? We had never seen any teams using them. Z. Piska

Tom Fletcher B.C. Views
When Adrian Dix took over as B.C. NDP leader two years ago, he struggled to communicate. There was a running joke in the legislature press gallery: It didn’t matter what question you asked him, you got a sixminute answer that ended with the evils of log exports. Even more than under Carole James, the NDP railed against log exports. “B.C. logs for B.C. jobs” became one of Dix’s favourite slogans. As the election approached, another Dixism was heard daily: “Say what you’re going to do, say how you’re going to pay for it.” So it was a surprise a few weeks ago when the NDP signaled it would essentially not offer a policy on log exports. They’re going to meet with “stakehold-
ers” and come up with a plan after they get a majority government. This is exactly the same non-policy the NDP had in 2009. They don’t have an answer to the industry’s point that the high price gained by premium logs in foreign markets is what keeps many loggers working, and subsidizes the harvest of other logs for B.C. coastal mills. Another thing the NDP doesn’t like is private power development. This issue featured prominently in the NDP leadership contest two years ago. Leadership contender Mike Farnworth told the party faithful he would study independent power purchase contracts, and if he found that they are not in the public interest, he would “mend them or end them.” Another leadership hopeful,
energy critic John Horgan, allowed that he would “break” contracts if necessary. By this spring, Dix had a new nonposition on power purchase contracts. He will “assess them and address them.” The printed platform promises a review “within the limits of existing contracts.” Labour code changes are another blank slate. A memo from the B.C. Federation of Labour executive to members last year described how they were working closely with the NDP to rewrite B.C. labour law. The NDP election platform punts this issue until after the election as well, promising an independent expert panel to decide on issues like whether to end secret-ballot votes for union certification. Balancing the budget? An NDP gov-
ernment will strive to do that over “the business cycle,” says finance critic Bruce Ralston. If you still believe in a predictable “business cycle,” you may be willing to accept that an NDP-led B.C. will become the first jurisdiction in human history to eliminate poverty, by setting annual targets and paying out borrowed money to low-income parents. On ferries, fracking, union contracts, capital construction and other weighty matters, the NDP’s answer is the same: trust us. NDP spending plan is frightening
I’m concerned many British Columbians are more focused on “change” for the sake of change rather than electing the party most likely to foster job creation and financial stability. Our province’s resource endowment has always been a mainstay of both jobs and the generation of revenues needed to fund social programs. From what I have seen and heard, an NDP government would rev-up spending while stymieing resource development through endless environmental reviews and or by just saying “no,” driving investment to other provinces and other countries. We need new mines and gas fields, pipelines, refineries, ports and processing plants to replace jobs lost by tech change and by events like the pine beetle catastrophe. Economic development and the protection of the environment are not mutually exclusive. Yes, we must be good
stewards of our beautiful province, but we do have the technology to move the economy forward in an environmentally responsible manner. Saying no to new projects will mean job losses for currently employed and no opportunity for young people looking to join the work force. We also need to focus on balancing the provincial budget, rather than taking money away from social programs to fund rising interest costs. Forty years of experience in business has taught me that too much debt is crippling. It scares me that the NDP have rolled out billions of dollars in new sp ending during this campaign, and their “every dollar is accounted for” rhetoric just isn’t credible because their anti-development attitude will reduce revenue at the same time as spending rises. There is truth to the adage, “Those who fail
to learn from history are through a major recession and yet we now have doomed to repeat it.” The NDP came to a triple-A credit rating, higher than the power in U.S. gover n1991 and governed ment, allowing the rest of B.C. taxpayers that decade. the lowest possiInvestment ble interest rates. dried up and Have the Libeconomic erals done everygrowth thing right? trailed the Certainly not. Frustrated over sea lion carcass
This letter is pointed at the arrogance and ignorance of the Fisheries Dept. It is a very sad world we live in when they put the rights of a dead sea lion with its head cut off over the rights of the human race. The smell at Shelter Bay is nauseating during the day when the onshore wind is blowing, making it almost unbearable to live there. Please do something about it. Frances Clive
December 01, 1929April 29, 2013 It is with great sadness that we tell you of the passing of Frances Catherine Clive (nee Perkins). Frances passed away suddenly on April 29, 2013 in her home. She is predeceased by her husband Harry Clive and survived by her son Brian Clive and his wife Kathy, grandchildren Matthew and Breanna; her daughter Sandra Clive and her husband Paul; grandchildren James and Sean; and her brother Larry Perkins; nephews Michael, Steven and Rod. Frances was active in her community of Campbell River both through her long teaching career as a home economics teacher at Carihi in the 1950s and at Southgate Secondary in the 1970’s; through her many volunteer activities particularly with Operation Vision, St. Peter’s Anglican Church, and the Campbell River Hospital Auxiliary; and through her many interests like the Embroiderer’s Guild, the Weaver’s Guild and more recently, quilting. Frances was particularly proud of her grandchildren Matthew, Breanna, James and Sean and was able to see them grow to be fine young adults. Mom, we will miss you. A Celebration of Life was held on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at the Beach House at 169 South Highway in Campbell River. Thank you to all who attended.
Lady Eileen Cecil Fitton (nee Paulet) August 22, 1917 – May 3, 2013

Eileen passed away peacefully on May 3 at New Horizons where she had resided for the past 2 ½ years. Eileen is predeceased by her first husband, Harry Evan Martin, her second husband, Joseph Fitton and their youngest daughter Judith. She was also pre-deceased by her sister, Pamela and her brother Richard. Eileen is survived by 7 children, Gillian, Susan (Luis), Francis (Victoria), Theresa (Neil), Jonathan (Lona), Margaret, and Catherine. Eileen has 16 grandchildren; Jane (John), Edward, Robert, Peter, Chrisol (Ciara), Michael, Alice (Ian), Shane (Brandi), Kala (David), Deanna (Ryan), Sheldon (Isabelle), Jeff (Erica), Will (Sarah), Nathan, Andrew (Hannah), and Ruben. Great grandchildren: Jamie, Harry, Faith, Lorenco, Alfonso, Sierra, Aada, Ethan, and Sharlie Great great grandchild: Leila. Eileen was born in Mayfair, London, England to Charles and Lilian Paulet. She went to school in Switzerland. Eileen drove an ambulance in London during the Blitz in the Second World War. She was a dedicated mother and wife and in 1957 she and Joe emigrated to Canada with six children. Catherine and Judith were born later in Canada. The family settled in Vancouver and all the children went through school there. She moved to Campbell River in 1976, and lived here happily ever since. Many of her children have also settled here and Campbell River has become the hub for the family. Eileen volunteered at the CR Museum for 10 years and grew to know and love the community. Eileen was always a second “Mumâ€? to all her children’s friends and everyone was always welcome in her home. She will be remembered as a loving, quiet, strong, determined, fun-loving, adventurous person and everyone who knew her has many happy memories to cherish and share. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at New Horizons for their compassionate care, and to the home help workers who were so kind prior to that. There will be a private service at Sutton’s Funeral Home on Saturday, May 11 at 12:00 PM for the family, followed by a Celebration of Life at The Royal Coachman Carriage Room from 1:00 pm. – 4:00 pm. January 21, 1943April 15, 2013 Carolynn (Lynn) Schmitt, age 70, passed away peacefully April 15, 2013 to join Karl who left her widowed 3 years ago. Lynn was born in Barrie Ontario January 21, 1943 to Charlie and Roma Dupuis. Strong family ties aided her as she raised her three children that were her pride and joy. With wonderment, Lynn appreciated art and beauty in her surroundings. She was an attractive woman, quick to laugh, and had a great sense of humour. In the mid 80’s, Lynn moved to Campbell River and found her calling in esthetics and during her career touched many hearts ...... and feet. She met people easily and cultivated good friendships including treasured sister-friends Noliene Engh, Caroline Vickers and Gayle Paquet. Lynn is survived by her children and step children, Todd, Trent, Lisa, Brenda, Tony, Loretta, Rose, Joe, Cindy, Darrell, and their families. She also leaves behind her sister Brenda and many nieces, nephews and cousins. The family would like to express our gratitude to Dr. Walker and incredible nurses Omar and Paul for their wonderful care. A celebration of Lynn's life will be held Saturday, May 11, 2013 at 1:00 pm at the Campbell River Community Centre - 401 11th Ave., Campbell River. Please join us.
Max Vorkampff 1932- 2013 Max was born in Pernau, Estonia in 1932. He was a husband, a father, g r a n d f a t h e r, g r e a t grandfather, brother and friend. After a youth defined by the realities of war in Europe, Max came to Canada in 1952 as a 20-year old searching for a better life. He worked hard as a labourer, contractor, employee and employer and finally as a consultant. The landscape of Vancouver Island bears witness to much of his work in the homes, schools and commercial buildings he was part of, as well as the magnificent gardens he created. Max was an action-oriented man who believed in moving forward, in recognizing and learning from his mistakes, in doing his best all the time, and in appreciating the abundance in his life. He had high expectations of and for the people he loved, and offered them unconditional love and support in return. His high standards of conduct earned respect and esteem from young and old, relatives, friends, colleagues and adversaries. Max’s love for his children and grandchildren and his enjoyment in their accomplishments never dimmed, and his deep love with Anne-Marie sustained him through a difficult illness. Max is predeceased by his sister (Lisel). He is survived by his wife Anne-Marie, sisters Hella (Willi), Thea (Heino), son Eric (Marietta), daughters Tara (Olaf), Fay (Carey), stepchildren Scott (Shannon), Michael (Lauren), numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2013,2-4 pm at the Olympic View Golf Course, 643 Latoria Road, Victoria, BC.

ASK THE EXPERT
How d does Monthly Giving Work?
Very easily. YYour donations are deducted straight from your credit card as a regular monthly charge. All you need to do is choose hhow much you want to give, sign the pap paperwork provided by the Foundation and we will do the rest. Your deduction ccan be changed or discontinued anytime you want.
Within reason you can. But under the law, each individual has an obligation to adequately provide for their spouse and children. As long as you have made adequate provisions in your Will for your spouse and children, you can choose to gift the rest to a particular child, charity, or any other individual. The value of your estate is only one factor among other determining factors. The intent of this law was to protect the dependant spouse and minor or disabled children. However, the adult children are also able to use the same “adequately provided for” argument to contest their parent’s Will. Courts have the final authority to determine whether the Will makes adequate provisions for spouse or children. This is a complex matter and you should consult a legal professional for further advice.

Having fun in the sun?
Too hot for hot water?
Make sure to protect your skin from sun-‐induced skin damage! How to prevent immediate skin damage: • Avoid direct sun exposure from 11 am to 3pm when the sun’s rays are the strongest. • If possible, protect your skin with Victor Choo clothing like wide-‐brimmed hat, Pharmacist/Owner long-‐ sleeved shirt, long pants and sunglasses. • Sunscreens can help protect your skin as well. They should be applied 30 minutes before exposure and be applied 15-30 minutes later to maximize protection. Use a water resistant product if you know you will be in the water or sweating a lot. For more information on how to protect your skin from the sun, visit Peoples Drug Mart to talk to your pharmacist and also check our wide selection of sunscreens!
No problem! You can turn your hot tub into a cool tub. Make your hot tub one of the best places to cool off and enjoy the relaxation benefits year-round. Turning your hot tub into a cool tub is easy and quick! All you have to do is turn the heater off! For the fastest turnover, take the cover off and keep the jets running. The Terry Collins, Owner temperature of the water will drop quickly. To keep the water cool and refreshing during the summer, keep hot tub covers on during sunny days and anytime you’re not using it. To help bring a chill to the water, let the jets running at night on cooler evenings. Unlike a pool hot tubs are insulated. The insulation will help keep the water temperature cool and resistant to the warm summer sun. Cool hot tubs are also popular with kids, it’s like having their own personal pool. What is IV sedation?
Help!! My puppy is chewing everything in my house!!!! First of all, chewing is a very normal and natural thing for any puppy or dog to do. Unfortunately they often chew the wrong thing like the couch or shoes because the owner hasn’t trained their puppy what he can chew and aren’t supervising the puppy properly. Use a kennel or a gated off area to restrict the puppy roaming around and finding something to chew on when you can’t be watching him. Invest in at least 2 (or more) KONG Cathy Merrithew toys, they’re hollow so they can be stuffed with the puppy’s meals or treats, give one to your puppy when you go out, he’ll work at getting the food out of it and tire himself out….I also love the Buster Cube - a treat dispensing toy that will entertain your puppy for hours and hours. If you find him chewing the wrong thing, redirect to what you want him to chew, and make sure not to leave anything where he can reach it…. I’d also suggest upping the exercise your puppy is getting, a “Tired Puppy is a Good Puppy!” Most puppies or adult dogs don’t get enough physical and/or mental exercise, and that’s why they find things to keep themselves busy. If they can’t chew, they might decide to bark or dig instead…..Try hiding treats out in the yard and sending him to go find them, anything to let him use his nose for hunting will certainly wear him out plus he’ll have fun doing it! A walk where he can sniff and investigate will tire him out more than chasing a ball or Frisbee…
Dr. Ingrid Pincott ND
Some dental offices refer to IV sedation as “sleep dentistry” or “twilight sleep” which are both misleading - IV conscious sedation is designed to relax the patient at a light or moderate level and, in reality, you remain conscious during the procedure meaning you will understand and respond to requests from your dentist - although you may not remember because the drug typically used does Dr. Kevin Lathangue two things, 1. Half of those who have heart attacks have normal cholesterol levels! What many of the Heart Labs in the United States are now offering Dr. Ingrid Pincott ND is measuring the SIZE of the HDL Naturopathic Physician and LDL cholesterol not just the number. Some patients with high HDL may have HDL’s that are smaller in size than is ideal, so they are not as efficient at taking the lipids back to the liver, increasing their risk of cardiovascular disease. Other patients have a high LDL number but because they are large in size they do not cause inflammation inside the arterial wall like the small size LDL does, thus lowering the cardiovascular risk. At my office we have Berkeley Heart Labs do these tests for us at a very reasonable price. Knowing the sizes of your HDL and LDL can really help you accurately assess your risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

When cats groom themselves, they swallow the loose hair that their rough tongue removes from their fur. Hairballs form when this swallowed hair accumulates in the esophagus or stomach. If a cat only swallows a few hairs during a grooming session, these hairs may mix with the other stomach contents and pass right on through. Longer hairs or large amounts of short hair may form clumps that stay in Dr. Peter the upper part of the intestinal tract until Woodward eventually they cause enough irritation that the cat will regurgitate them up - usually onto your prized carpet or couch. There are a couple of things you can do to lessen the likelihood that your cat will develop hairballs. First, you should groom your cat regularly to remove some of the loose hair. Ideally you should brush your cat daily, but even a weekly brushing will make a difference. Second, you can give your cat a hairball preventative on a regular basis. These products are designed to coat and lubricate the hairs that are in the stomach so that they will pass through the digestive system. Finally, there are some cat foods that are said to help prevent hairballs. They may be a worthwhile addition to your hairball prevention strategy, particularly if your cat does not enjoy grooming.

Treating a Green Pond Preventing a pond from getting green should always be the first step....but even with the best prevention plan we can still end up with green ponds. There are products available that will get rid of your “green water” temporarily. Laguna Clear Fast is an excellent liquid product that you treat Sarah Kirk the pond with, it causes the green Owner single cell algae that is causing the problem to “clump” and therefore allow your filter to remove it. You can use this product fairly often as need necessitates.
» Pet Store
Add a Laguna UV sterilizer....it’s simple and your pond will be crystal clear! Installation is easy...you “interupt” the pond tubing that you already have, and put in a sterilizer...it’s really that simple. A couple things to consider when adding a UV sterilizer is the flow of water you have going through your tubing now. If your flow is too high, it will not work properly nor if it is too low.....there are a few guidelines to flow regarding UV sterilizers....follow them and enjoy a beautiful crystal clear pond ALWAYS! There are sizes for every pond!

May 5-11 is Emergency Preparedness Week Emergency preparedness is everyone's business! 85% of Canadians agree that having an emergency kit is important to ensure both their personal and family’s safety, yet only 40% have actually prepared or purchased an emergency kit. With the severe flooding in Saskatchewan occurring and the fire risk in the BC interior already raising concerns, the time for preparation is now!

Taking an active role in your community, helps to build a culture of preparedness in Canada. While governments at all levels are working hard to keep Canada safe, everyone has a role to play in being prepared for an emergency. Building awareness is a great first step and with your help, together we can communicate the importance of emergency preparedness to all Canadians.

Emergency Preparedness Week is a national initiative that has taken place annually since 1996. This collaborative event, undertaken by provincial and territorial emergency management organizations, supports activities at the local level in concert with Public Safety Canada and its partners. Emergency Preparedness Week focuses on encouraging Canadians to take three simple steps to become better prepared to face a range of potential emergencies:

Experts’ Advice I have trouble saving any of my pay cheque and always end up using credit cards to pay big expenses. It’s adding up but what can I do? Vehicle insurance, vehicle repairs, vacations etc all seem to surprise us and pile up on credit cards or lines of credit, even when we Peter Garat know they are going to happen. Certified Financial Planner Establishing a savings discipline is a crucial part of true financial planning. To avoid future debt, and to enjoy positive cash flow, automatic savings is essential. The best way to do this is to open an account that is not readily accessible like a high interest savings account or a non-registered investment through an independent financial advisor. Then set up an automatic transfer of funds to coincide with your paydays. Its best to avoid accounts you can access with a debit card and make sure you discuss fees with your advisor so you don’t get hit with high charges when you need the money.

Young with no financial obligations often means taking advantage of the opportunity to travel – to busy vacation destinations with your friends, Darlene Garat or even places further abroad. Financial Advisor Youth and travel often go hand in hand, and where there is travel there is the chance you may contract hepatitis. While treatable today, hepatitis as part of your medical history can often result in being uninsurable in the future. At the very least you may be paying a significantly higher premium. Term life insurance bought at a young age is extremely inexpensive, and the right product can be converted later to a contract with cash values and become an important part of your future financial success.

Killer Whales make waves The Campbell River Killer Whales competed at the 10th annual Wavemaker Invitational in Victoria, which kicked off the long course racing season. With more than 35 Killer Whales competing, ranging from a 7-year-old competing at her first long course meet, to a 17-year-old trying to reach their next standard, it was definitely a weekend full of fast racing and lots of excitement. The first day began off with a big come from behind victory by the 12 and under girls in the 400 freestyle relay, which set the tone for the entire weekend. Some of the other highlights from Day one included Gage Windle breaking the 10 and under 200 backstroke club record by three seconds and qualifying for the 11 and under AAA standard in the same event. A big accomplishment for a 9-year-old! Kaya Lathangue, who swam in her first long course meet ever had a great 100 freestyle, showing no nerves and swimming like a seasoned veteran. The 1500 freestyle added a lot of excitement with Jenna Beaudin, Melayna Beaudin, Caiyln Collis and Cianna Dunn swimming their first LC 1500 freestyle ever, with all swimming great and showing a lot of potential in the marathon of

Heavenly good time at Angel Rock The Kinsmen had the roulette wheel spinning, the black jack tables were packed and the gamblers were having a great time as they wined, dined and raised money for the Campbell River Hospice Society. Angel Rock supporters were treated to a scrumptious dinner provided by the Royal Coachman and afterwards bid on some great auction items including trips and a diamond ring! George Spelvin, played by Scott Low, is an unfortunate accountant who finds himself on stage among several renowned actors and a bossy stage manager (played by Kate Fetherston) who thinks he is the understudy of their injured main star. The only problem is George has no recollection of attending a single rehearsal, or if his name is even George. Tickets are available at Hummingbird, Works of H’Art, The Music Plant and at the door.

Gardens wanted! | CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR | WEDNESDAY, MAY 8, 2013
Campbell River’s gardens have burst into glorious bloom, just in time for the Art Gallery’s search for new gardens. The annual tour, a fundraiser to support children’s programs through
S
the year, takes place June 22-23, and is sponsored by Royal LePage Campbell River. The gallery is looking for new gardens to add to its roster of highlights from previous years.

The organizing committee hopes to find a broad range of styles and sizes, from wilderness acreages to creatively developed city lots. Gardeners who regularly open their properties for this tour enjoy the opportunity to share their passion for growing things. Tour goers are generally fellow gardeners who delight in this opportunity to get new ideas for landscaping and tips about what plants work well in our region. “No garden is too small or too unorthodox,” says Denise Sharkey, one of the tour organizers. “That’s part of the excitement of the tour.” Call the Gallery for more details at 250-2872261 or visit www.crartgallery.ca

John Robinson’s garden is a terrific example of how much personality can be packed into a city residential lot.
