At home
A man has been charged with murder less than two weeks after a suspected drug dealer was gunned down at a busy Maple Ridge mall. Edward Marke Antonsen, 29, was arrested by RCMP at his home in Maple Ridge Friday and made a first appearance in court on second-degree murder charges Monday. “There were a number of calls from the community who really pulled together on this and led us to who was responsible,” said Sgt. Jennifer Pound, with the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team. Claude Gille Deguire, 26, was shot at close range in the parking lot in front of Thrifty Foods at Haney Place Mall on April 29. see Shooting, p15

Free parking motion denied Pay parking at hospital ‘not a municipal issue’ by Phi l M elnyc h u k staff reporter
A councillor’s request to find out what can be done about pay parking at Ridge Meadows Hospital has been consigned to municipal lawyers. Corisa Bell asked her colleagues Monday to ask staff to see what could be done follow-
ing complaints about people getting parking tickets at the hospital. Member of a local group, the Rx Rockers, were even slapped with $60 fines after doing a charity Christmas concert at Baillie House. First, though, council wants a legal opinion to see if it can even do anything. “I don’t think we should say it should be free because we don’t know the consequences,” said Mayor Ernie Daykin. While council can advocate for free parking, “to ask for free

parking – nothing is free,” said Coun. Cheryl Ashlie, who wanted to know Fraser Health’s business reasons for the pay parking lots operated by Bell Impark. What is the alternative to userpay parking? she asked. One consequence could be a
more crowded parking lot, where it would be difficult to find a parking spot, said Coun. Bob Masse. Couns. Michael Morden, Masse and Bell unsuccessfully opposed the withdrawal of the motion, leading to a later decision to seek legal advice. Maple Ridge should advocate for its residents because the issue is real, said Coun. Judy Dueck. But it’s a Fraser Health issue. “I have never been a fan of taking on provincial issues. see Parking, p5

Former teacher skips education forum Marc Dalton met with seniors groups in Mission

week before the May 14 provincial election, local hopefuls squared off in an all-candidates’ meeting about public education at Thomas Haney secondary on Tuesday night, but Marc Dalton missed it. The incumbent Liberal Maple Ridge-Mission MLA, and former teacher, explained that he was involved with “campaign activities” in Mission on Tuesday night, including meeting with seniors groups. “There are only so many days to the election, and this is a tight one.” Dalton said he has attended three all-candidates’ events already, and will be at a fourth in Mission on Thursday. “I’ve definitely been available.” That left Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows candidate Dr. Doug Bing to defend the Liberal Party’s record on education, and it was regularly assailed by NDP candidates Elizabeth Rosenau for Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows and Doug Bocking for Maple Ridge-Mission. Bocking charged that the provincial government’s two largest responsibilities are health and education, and said, “We believe the B.C. Liberals have failed to protect public education.” He said the NDP will increase education spending, “turning back the clock on more than a decade of neglect.” Rosenau added that “classroom conditions have deteriorated drastically over the last 10 years.” She said she knows teachers who spend their own money to buy classroom materials and supplies. At the same time, schools spend

Bing, running against Rosenau in Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows, said education spending is at a record $5.3 billion, and has risen 29 per cent over the past 12 years. “The problem is the money is used inefficiently,” he said. “There is enough money going into the system.” He added that the NDP plans to tax the wealthy or tax businesses is just a different way of cutting up the “pie” of the province’s economy, while a Liberal government is more focussed on “growing the pie.” Bing also commented on eight
job actions by teachers in the past 15 years. “Is this putting children first?” he asked. “Let’s get politics out of the classroom.” Green Party candidates Alex Pope of Maple Ridge-Mission and Michael Patterson of Maple RidgePitt Meadows were both at the meeting, and conceded that their party is unlikely to form government, but has a goal of electing four MLAs to bring the Green perspective to Victoria. Manuel Pratas, Conservative for Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows, spoke about the critical need for education, from the perspective of a parent of a 19-year-old son, and said his party would support post-secondary education by offering tax credits to university students.
“Grade 12 right now doesn’t mean a thing,” Pratas said. “You’ve got to go to university, and you’ve got to do something.” Chad Thompson, the Conservative candidate for Maple RidgeMission, also missed the event. Asked who won, and who lost, members of the public were most impressed by the veteran politician Bing, a city councillor, and the well-spoken Rosenau. “Elizabeth talked the most ontopic, and gave direct, fact-based answers,” said David Parent. “I was disappointed that Marc Dalton didn’t show,” he added. Another man said the night’s debates didn’t change his rankings of the candidates. “I had a one-two-three-four, and they’re still number one-two-
Quotes from the all-candidates’ meeting at THSS: • Bocking on skills training: “We have a lot of people who need jobs, and we have jobs that need people.” • Rosenau: “I don’t see education as a cost burden the way some people do. I see it as an investment in citizens.” • Patterson on private schools “The big problem is, there is a perception that there is degradation of the private school system.” • Pope, on the relevance of school boards “They should have more power to make decisions for their communities.” • Pratas, opposing centralization of school boards “They can look after people, the way they have for years.” • Bing on unwarranted criticism of the education system “Would we be doing as well as we are if it were true?” he asked. “We are the forefront of education in this world really, and I don’t think we have anything to be embarrassed about.” three-four,” said a man who did not want to give his last name. “The doctor expressed himself quiet well, but he’s probably the most practiced politician.” June Richards attended with her daughter, Sarah, who is in Grade 12. “Now I’m more confused – they all said the same things, basically,” lamented Sarah. “It’s my first time voting. I don’t know who to vote for, and I don’t want to make an uninformed vote.” Her mother agreed that there was a lot of overlap in comments, as candidates answered questions from the floor. “There were some good points made,” said June. “I saw the coverage in the paper, but it’s good to see them in person.”
Election signs ripped off, knocked down and destroyed by Phil M elnyc h u k staff reporter
Sign vandals plague most elections, but Liberal candidate Marc Dalton and his crew have never seen it this bad. The past few weeks, he and his campaigners in the Maple Ridge-Mission riding have been kept busy repairing the nightly onslaught that’s seen lawn signs scooped up or knocked down, while larger billboards have been smashed, torn apart or sometimes even have the wooden stakes and posts stolen.
“It’s happening all over,” Dalton said Monday. “It’s widespread. It’s one thing if it’s the odd one here and there, but it’s just been all over.” Dalton says about half of the 70 or so larger signs posted on boulevards and road signs have been trashed, while the same percentage of 300 lawn signs have gone missing or have been knocked down. The vandals strike mainly at night and mainly in Maple Ridge and disproportionately focus on Liberal signs. “I put them up, the next morning, they would be down. I put them up, the next

morning they are down.” He says his workers also see other party’s signs damaged, and when they do, they alert the party so repairs can be made. Dalton isn’t blaming the NDP team for the vandalism, but says sympathizers of that party could be behind Dalton the damage. “We have to go back, over and over.”
Damaging or removing election signs is illegal, he points out. NDP candidate Mike Bocking said trashing of campaign signs happens every election. “It’s been a little bit lighter than in past campaigns. Bocking has run for the NDP one provincially and three times federally before. “We just don’t like to see it.” He’s asking people to take out their feelings on a candidates’ signs. Each 1.2-metre by-1.2 metre sign costs about $50.

Resident-only parking working well New bylaw now a year old by Phil M elnyc h u k staff reporter
A new bylaw that allowed neighbours to set limits on who parks in their area is still working well as it nears its first birthday. The “resident only bylaw” allows residents to collect petitions supported by 65 per cent of those who live there, asking for either resident exemption (for time limits) or residentonly parking in busy areas. If the required support is shown to staff, streets can have either time-
limited parking, allowing residents to park for longer times; or “resident-only” parking – in areas where there’s a lack of on-street parking. So far, only two locations have had two-hour parking limits put in place. One general area is near Ridge Meadows Hospital on Cutler Place, west of Laity Street, and on 212th Street, north of 117th Avenue. Residents were concerned about hospital employees and residents parking for extended periods, so the restrictions were imposed last August. Another location, on Anderson Place, south of River Road, near Ridge Meadows Hospital, also had a two-hour parking limit imple-

“What’s municipal work is municipal work.” Maple Ridge can try to get Fraser Health to change its mind, “but I’m not prepared to take our staff time on something we have no control over.” Dueck added of council: “It’s not fair to everybody that one person has got information and the rest of us don’t, because we’re making decisions that are not informed.” She said she didn’t know that Bell was going to raise the issue. “I feel ill prepared to make a decision without the background.” But Coun. Al Hogarth responded: “There have been discussions on this so don’t make it sound like there hasn’t been.” Bell said she discussed the topic with the mayor two weeks ago, adding the topic has been on TV. “It’s happening everywhere,” Bell said. “I feel it’s our responsibility to bring it to Fraser Health,” adding she’d like Fraser Health to attend a council meeting. Daykin said last December that he had staff review the issue. Fraser Health owns the Ridge Meadows Hospital property, much as a private title holder would. Council could face a legal challenge any time it passes a bylaw that places covenants on private property, said Daykin. Daykin also had staff look at bylaws in other municipalities that have free parking at their hospitals, and found their situations differ from that of Maple Ridge. In Mission, staff found that although people do not pay for parking, they do pay a hospital levy on their tax bill. He also noted the parking fees paid at health-care facilities in Maple Ridge cover lot maintenance, and some added revenue is put back into the health-care system. Delta has a parking bylaw that dates back to the early 1980s. “It’s not municipal responsibility. We are not in the hospital business,” said chief administrator Jim Rule.
ARMS, Adopt-A-Block joining forces One of Maple Ridge’s river groups and the group that keeps streets clean are joining forces to save money and make better use of resources. Adopt-A-Block is merging with the Alouette River Management Society, society spokesman Nicole Driedger told council Monday. Doing so will allow coordination of both groups’ actions such as cleaning up streets and parks and enhancing stream habitat, although the groups already combine efforts on such projects. The two groups already share office space, which Adopt-A-Block rents from ARMS, in the Rivers Heritage Centre in Allco Park.
mented last September. Some people tried to get parking limits along Dogwood Avenue, near the Black Sheep Pub, but there wasn’t enough support. A staff report says that one consequence of the parking limits is the inconvenience for visitors to residents in the area who may have to hunt for permitted parking
spaces. Staff say the costs for the program are minimal, with motorists only needing a $10 vehicle decal identifying them as residents. Both areas with residentonly parking are near Ridge Meadows Hospital. THE NEWS/files

THE NEWS/opinion News Views
Mr. no show Liberal MLA Marc Dalton, a former teacher, did not attend an all-candidates’ meeting on education Monday at Thomas Haney secondary. Dalton, who represented the Maple Ridge-Mission riding, said he had other campaign commitments, such as meeting with seniors’ groups in Mission, and that he’d already been to three all-candidates’ meetings, and plans to go to one more. He’s not the first candidate to miss such a meeting, it’s just that this one was organized by the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school board and district parent advisory committee, and some feel public education is a pretty important issue. It is for certain in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, where a few trustees cried as they first announced $5.6 million in cuts to balance next year’s operating budget. Teacher librarians lost some hours, and other positions were trimmed. How about capital funding for a much-needed new elementary school in Albion, which is in the riding Dalton represented, or over-crowding at Samuel Robertson Technical secondary, a high school built with funding from the Liberal government for only 600 students? Students entering Grade 8 are now being turned away from SRT. Improving labour relations with teachers, who’ve withdrawn their services several times during the Liberal government’s tenure, was also discussed at the Thomas Haney meeting. It would be interesting to know how Dalton feels about all those issues, considering he just served his first term in the Legislature, considering he was part of the party that formed government, the one currently sitting second in the polls. Maybe he’ll say today, when Premier Christy Clark visits his office,l her third vote to the area this campaign. Chad Thompson, running for the Conservatives in Maple Ridge-Mission, also did not attend Monday’s education meeting, but the other six local candidates managed to make it. They weren’t too busy to talk about the state of public education. – The News

NDP’s answer to voters: trust us VICTORIA – When Adrian Dix took over as B.C. NDP leader two years ago, he struggled to communicate, especially in the sound bites of radio and TV. There was a running joke in the legislature press gallery: It didn’t matter what quesB.C. Views tion you asked him, you got a six-minute Tom Fletcher answer that ended with the evils of log exports. Even more than under Carole James, the NDP railed against log exports. “B.C. logs for B.C. jobs” became one of Dix’s favourite slogans. As the election approached, another Dixism was heard daily: “Say what you’re going to do, say how you’re going to pay for it.” So it was a surprise a few weeks ago when the NDP signaled it would essentially not offer a policy on log exports. It’s going to meet with “stakeholders” and come up with a plan after forming a majority government. This is exactly the same non-policy the NDP had in 2009. The party doesn’t have an answer to the industry’s point that the high price gained by premium logs in foreign markets is what keeps many loggers working, and subsidizes the harvest of other logs for B.C. coastal mills. Another thing the NDP doesn’t like is private power development. This issue featured prominently in the NDP leadership contest two years ago.
Leadership contender Mike Farnworth told the party faithful he would study independent power purchase contracts, and if he found that they are not in the public interest, he would “mend them or end them.” Another leadership hopeful, energy critic John Horgan, allowed that he would “break” contracts if necessary. By this spring, Dix had a new nonposition on power purchase contracts. He will “assess them and address them.” The printed platform promises a review “within the limits of existing contracts.” Either they plan to risk a costly legal battle, or they’re just paying lip service. All you have to do to find out is elect them. Labour code changes are another blank slate. A memo from the B.C. Federation of Labour executive to members last year described how they were working closely with the NDP to rewrite B.C. labour law. The NDP election platform punts this issue until after the election as well, promising an independent expert panel to decide on issues like whether to end secret-ballot votes for union certification. This isn’t just a bad idea, it’s a 30-yearold bad idea. It’s based on the destructive old notion that employers are the enemy of workers, and only a union can protect them. The long decline of union membership in the private sector isn’t caused by employer bullying or secret-ballot votes that protect employees’ freedom of choice. The cause is global competition. The only protection workers have from that is their own efficiency. Balancing the budget?
An NDP government will strive to do that over “the business cycle,” says finance critic Bruce Ralston. Old-timers might remember this one. It’s taken from the NDP’s 1991 election platform.
“The long decline of union membership in the private sector isn’t caused by employer bullying or secret-ballot votes that protect employees’ freedom of choice.” Yes, 22 years ago there was a widespread belief in a predictable four-year cycle of commodity prices and other economic determinants. Whatever was left of that dusty, faded picture was erased with the financial collapse of 2008. If you still believe in a predictable “business cycle,” you may be willing to accept that an NDP-led B.C. will become the first jurisdiction in human history to eliminate poverty, by setting annual targets and paying out borrowed money to low-income parents. On ferries, fracking, union contracts, capital construction and other weighty matters, the NDP’s answer is the same: trust us.

The News/commentary
Canadians get first We need to develop resources crack at available jobs I Editor, The News: Recently, Canadians have raised concerns about the Temporary Foreign Worker Program being used by some employers to replace Canadians with foreign workers. Our government’s priority is to ensure that Canadians get first crack at available jobs in their area. Our responsibility is to Canadians, which is why we launched a review of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program as per our commitment made to taxpayers in Economic Action Plan 2013. We moved quickly to identify and correct any problems that may prevent qualified Canadian workers from being given first chance at available jobs. First, we are mandating that companies must produce a solid plan to transition from the use of foreign workers to Canadians — that means training Canadians if necessary. This will ensure that temporary foreign workers do not become permanent fixtures and long-term solutions. We are also ensuring that we hold companies accountable, by increasing our authority to revoke work permits for those companies that do not play by the rules. We are asking additional questions as part of the application process to ensure that when employers bring in temporary foreign workers no Canadian workers are displaced as a result. Also, we will require that employers using the Temporary Foreign Worker Program pay temporary foreign workers at the prevailing wage for a job. These are just a few of the reforms we are introducing. These changes will strengthen and improve the Temporary Foreign Worker Program to support our economic recovery and growth. Randy Kamp, MP Pitt Meadows–Maple Ridge–Mission
’m concerned that many British Columbians are more focused on change for the sake of change rather than electing the party most likely to foster job creation and financial stability. Our province’s resource endowment has always been a mainstay of both jobs and the generation of revenues needed to fund social programs. From what I have seen and heard, an NDP government would rev-up spending while stymieing resource development through endless environmental reviews, or by just saying ‘no,’ driving investment to other provinces and other countries. We need new mines and gas fields, pipelines, refineries, ports and processing plants to replace jobs lost by tech change and by events like the pine beetle catastrophe Economic development and the protection of the environment are not mutually exclusive. Yes, we must be good stewards of our beautiful province, but we do have the technology to move the economy forward in an environmentally responsible manner. Saying no to new projects will mean job losses for those currently employed and create no opportunities for young people looking to join the work force. We also need to focus on balanc-
ing the provincial budget, rather than taking money away from social programs to fund rising interest costs. Forty years of experience in business has taught me that too much debt is crippling. It scares me that Commentary the NDP have Gwyn Morgan rolled out billions of dollars in new spending during this campaign, and its “every dollar is accounted for” rhetoric just isn’t credible because its anti-development attitude will reduce revenue at the same time as spending rises. There is truth to the adage, ‘Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.’ The NDP came to power in 1991 and governed the rest of that decade. Investment dried up and economic growth trailed the rest of Canada. A low-point came when the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce thanked the B.C. government for driving growth investment in Alberta. Glenn Clark’s 1996-1999 tenure was arguably the most disastrous for B.C.,
and with Adrian Dix, premier Clark’s former chief of staff, leading the province, I’d be very worried about history repeating itself. It took many years for the Liberals to repair the damage. During their time in government, North America suffered through a major recession, yet we now have a triple-A credit rating, higher than the U.S. government, allowing B.C. taxpayers the lowest possible interest rates Have the Liberals done everything right? Certainly not. The introduction of the HST by Gordon Campbell was badly handled. There have been other gaffes and ill thought out policies. And while there is a natural inclination for people to vote to change long governing parties, it’s important not to let the NDP sleepwalk to victory without thinking about which party is likely to create jobs and not burden today’s young people with a mountain of debt. I’m not asking that you agree with me, only that you think through the full consequences of your choice carefully. And get out and vote on May 14.

Donate yard frontage for sidewalks? District could put barriers on 232nd by Phil M elnyc h u k staff reporter
Maple Ridge wants to fix the gaps in its sidewalk system, starting with treacherous 232nd Street, by making area residents offers they may or may not refuse. Staff told council Monday that a temporary sidewalk could be put on the on the west side of the road, between 132nd Avenue and Silver Valley Road, for about $265,000. That would involve installing concrete barriers, building a two-metre-wide gravel foot path and an equestrian path beside it. As a result, people and animals would be protected along that onekilometre stretch just as they are on 240th Street in Albion. Also, if residents want to give up a bit of the frontage of their lots to the district, a proper rebuild of the road could take place, involving curbs and gutters, sidewalks and street lights. Cost for that would be about $3 million. The risk to that approach, though, would be that later digging up, repaving and recon-
The district is proposing improvements to 232nd Street. struction would be required as development takes place and new roads are built to connect with 232nd Street. Engineer Dave Pollock told council that approach will serve as a test for about another 10 similar fill-in type projects totalling $1.1 million, earmarked for Silver Valley and Albion, as a means of filling in the spaces that have been created by a patchwork of new housing projects. Council, though, decided to present residents with a complete rebuild of 232nd Street as the first option. Then, if residents don’t want to donate their frontage, the district can proceed with the temporary sidewalk.
“I’m really glad we’re at this point. It’s long over due,” said Coun. Cheryl Ashlie. Coun. Michael Morden didn’t want to waste money by building a sidewalk that would be torn up later. At some point, the new multi-use path on Abernethy Way, east of 224th Street, will be dug up to make way for four-laning of that road, he pointed out. The district’s priority is four-laning 128th Avenue, from 210th to 224th streets, said public works manager Frank Quinn. The other sidewalk projects in Silver Valley have been identified on 236th Street and 132nd Avenue, Balsam Street and Fern Crescent, just east of 232nd Street.

In Albion, 240th Street near 112th Avenue could get sidewalks of some kind, as well as 112th Avenue, east of 240th Street. Jackson Road and 104th Avenue and 102nd Avenue, west of Jackson Road also have sidewalks planned. • Maple Ridge has already completed several projects on its to-do list: sidewalks have been done on 232nd Street near Maple Ridge Park, while 122nd and 124th avenues near Laity Street have new sidewalks for a few four blocks; Abernethy Way also has new sidewalks between 224th and 232nd streets, and pedestrian lights on 224th and 240th streets.

Pitt farmers opposes Metro’s ‘tax on smell’

FRIDAY, MAY 10TH (1 Day ONLY!)
Metro Vancouver bylaw meant to police industries that emit unpleasant smells. The city’s agricultural advisory committee believes the bylaw could have an impact on the financial viability of farming and the food processing industry. The Pitt Meadows Agricultural Advisory Committee’s says the proposed odour emission control bylaw concept appears to be a “tax” on smell. “A smell that is offensive to some is acceptable to others, so it is unlikely that this approach will reduce odours or cut down on complaints,” wrote committee co-chairs Joe Bachmann and Leo Captein. According to the proposed legislation, companies would be
classified within categories of low, moderate, and high potential for odour emissions. Low potential sources include most farms and cold animal processing plants (frozen fish); moderate potential includes composting facilities with less than 30,000 cubic metres of non-farm waste, and warm animal processing, but less than 100,000 animal units per year; and high potential such as composting operations involving materials other than yard waste greater than 10,000 cubic metres, animal feed production sites, and rendering plants. Moderate potential facilities would have to register and pay a one-time $500 registration fee and develop an odour management plan to Metro Van-
couver, while high potential facilities would have to obtain an air emission permit, measure odour emissions, and pay an annual fee of $5 for every person affected by the odour based on that estimate (to a maximum of $150,000 per year). The agricultural committee isn’t the only group to voice concerns about the odour bylaw. The Delta Farmers Institute sent a similar letter to Metro Vancouver in January. Bachmann and Captein noted the bylaw approach appears to be onerous on all things related to farming. The committee noted the Farm Practices Protection Act should take precedent over the bylaw. The committee has asked the City of Pitt Meadows to take its

concerns to Metro Vancouver. Bill Morrell with Metro Vancouver says the odour bylaw is on hold for the moment. Metro’s board has referred the bylaw back to staff to rework. However, Metro Vancouver expects odour problems to grow as more organic solid waste is diverted from landfill and incineration. The proposed bylaw includes fees so taxpayers don’t have to subsidize the regulation of odour-emitting industries. Last September, the smell of rotting manure spread on a field near Pitt Meadows airport generated more than 200 complaints, including dozens of calls to 911 after people mistook the odour for a gas leak.

The 30 cents per tonne rate charged by the city has remained unchanged since 1997. To fully repair the roads the trucks travel on, the city has calculated the rate needs to be increased to 41 cents per tonne. Trucks hauling soil to the gravel pit will pay a fee of $5 per truck. “A review of the tonnage being hauled out by truck from the quarry over the last several years indicates that there has been a significant increase in the amount of material being hauled to and from the quarry,” said engineering service coordinator Ike De Boer in a report to council last week. Just under half of the total tonnes processed at the quarry leaves the site by barge via the Pitt River, with the remainder leaving the site by truck. Council has suggested the city review the levies charged every three years. Council was set to approve the changes at its regular meeting May 7. The current gravel mine has enough stone and rock for another 20 years of extraction and covers 54.7 hectares. Lafarge Canada was granted an extension in 2011 to expanded the quarry, allowing the company to continue mining at the site for an additional 10 to 15 years.

A rogue wind storm flew through the fairgrounds at the Ridge Meadows Home Show on Saturday, causing momentary chaos but resulting in no injuries. During the first MiCo’s Swimwear Fashion Show at 1 p.m., a huge gust of wind spiraled in from the east, tearing up banners at the corral, where the Yamaha Riding Academy was taking place, before traveling through the tent village, toppling several of the exhibitor’s tents that were staked to the ground. “I would say it was a path a couple hundred feet wide because the guys in the remote parking lot didn’t experience anything like what we experienced,” said Cassandre Winder, Home Show project coordinator. Then the storm approached the fashion show area, picking up the tent where the models were actually getting changed. Although the tent was pulled free from the stakes in the ground and moved around, it remained upright. But a large tent over the barbecue school went mobile. “I actually grabbed hold thinking I could contribute something to it and it actually lifted me up like I was a

Over 18,000 people visited the Ridge Meadows Home Show over the weekend. “No word of exaggeration, it was our best year of attendance,” said Winder. “It was consistently busy. People were really participating in the BMX and the Yamaha Riders School.” The summer-like weather was also a challenge, but one Winder’s team was ready for, keeping people hydrated and protected from the sun.

The wind was so strong, Winder says, that people reported seeing a funnel filled with paper work, debris and balloons swirling upwards. A barbecue tool being used by Chef Dez was located 300 feet away from the apron it was being stored in. Winder was amazed at how calm people remained. Band teacher honoured for inclusiveness by Nei l Corbe tt staff reporter
Maple Ridge secondary band teacher Ed Dumas has been recognized by Inclusion B.C., a nonprofit organization that promotes the participation of people with developmental disabilities into community life. Dumas will collect his National Inclusive Education Award at the Sheraton Wall Centre Hotel in Vancouver, on May 25, “for his exemplary practice of including students with disabilities in his music program.” “It’s something I’ve kind of always done, and never really
thought about,” said Dumas, who has taught for 29 years. He was nominated by Deb Appleby, whose son Mitchell plays the tambourine in the MRSS senior jazz band. Mitchell cannot talk, and is in a wheelchair. “It’s been a wonderful experience, as a parent, to watch my son be fully included,” said Appleby. “He loves the band, he loves the music, and he really gets into the performances.” Dumas recalls in the early days of his career, students with developmental disabilities did not take mainstream courses. When that changed, his approach was, “Fine, what’s the big deal.”
Each student has a specialist assistant, and he finds ways for them to participate at their level. “To me, music is for everyone. Everyone has a place. Everyone can make music to some level, and they should,” he said. “Music is part of everyone’s life. It’s like breathing.” Appleby saw the award as a way to not only recognize Dumas, but also to promote his approach to including special needs students. “I think it’s really important for people to see what our kids are capable of, if they’re given a chance,” said Appleby. Inclusion B.C. was formerly the B.C. Association for Community Living.

Paige Charron takes the challenge for Maple Ridge!
The chinook fingerlings, found by KEEPS, may have spawned in Kanaka Creek. Harrison or Chilliwack rivers and are resting in Maple Ridge before continuing on to the ocean. Maggy Creek’s con-
ditions recently have been improved thanks to a better culvert connecting it with Kanaka. Habitat was also improved.
The Maple Ridge Lions Club with the support of many sponsors and the community m a d e p o s s i b l e a Tr i v i a Night evening packed with excitement and challenges many had never tried before. All this fun was aimed at supporting the Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation needs to providing equipment that would not normally have been able to be purchased. Action packed evening with many yells of encouragement and enlightenment allowed the Maple Ridge Lions to complete their goal of a donation of $5000 for the Hospital foundation. A valve also allows the level of a pond in the area to be regulated, enhancing habitat. Davies said with home construction nearing completion in the area, the amount of silt in the creek has been reduced. “So the food production has rebounded and so has the fish presence.” Davies noted that the one-year-old coho are uniform in size, which shows there’s enough food for the fish.

Give nature half a chance and sometimes the payback is quick to follow, such as in Maggy Creek, the tributary that flows into Kanaka Creek at 240th Street. Kanaka Education and Environmental Protection Society last week found coho and chinook salmon, cutthroat and stickleback in the creek. “It’s very unusual. It’s the first time I’ve seen chinook in that tributary,” said Ross Davies, with KEEPS. The chinook fingerlings may have actually spawned in Kanaka Creek last year, but more likely came from

Shooting over drug trade ‘turf’ Shooting from front
Two men, aged 26 and 27, were initially arrested after the shooting, but released from custody without charges, while police sought a third suspect. Pound said police believe Antonsen was that third suspect. Police revealed that Antonsen and Deguire were “acquaintances” and that the shooting was part of a dispute over “territory” or “turf ” in the street-level drug trade. The shooting was the first homicide of the year for Ridge Meadows RCMP and the second fatal shooting at a mall in Metro Vancouver in a week. Police would not confirm whether Deguire was once associated with the United Nations gang but believe his death is not connected to a recent spate of gun violence in Metro Vancouver. “It started off as some argument based on lower level criminal activity, possibly over the drug trade,” said Pound. “Nothing would suggest it’s more involved or gang or organized crime linked.” Insp. Dave Fleugel with Ridge Meadows RCMP added the violence connected to Deguire’s death is unusual for Maple Ridge. “That said, it is clear to me as a police officer, that when

people get involved in the illegal distribution of drugs. There’s a level of violence that goes with it,” said Fleugel. “Rules for people who live that lifestyle become blurry and it doesn’t generally end well for people who are involved in it.” Downtown residents claim street-level drug dealing is rampant in the area, especially south of Lougheed Highway. One claimed to have witnessed the beginning of a fight that ended with Deguire being shot. Six guys were ganging up on this one guy, he said, then someone pulled a gun and he
ran across the highway. Ridge Meadows RCMP have assured residents that they are aware of the neighbourhood concerns. Uniformed officers patrol Port Haney regularly because it’s identified as a highcrime area. Antonsen remains in custody on a detention order. Court records show he was charged with growing marijuana for the purpose of trafficking in 2008, but those charges were eventually dismissed. See related video @ mapleridgenews.com

Rioters face civil suits London Drugs has filed the first civil law suits against 14 Stanley Cup rioters who trashed the firm’s downtown Vancouver store two years ago. Some are still before the courts on criminal charges, but others have been convicted. London Drugs is seeking a combined total of $50,000 in damages from the initial four small claims lawsuits it has filed. But CEO Wynne Powell said money recovered through the courts must be repaid to insurance companies. “We’re not doing this for the money,” Powell said. “We’re doing this on behalf of the staff who felt they were going to lose their lives on that night and felt terrorized by these people.”

Life and works of Father Dunstan Looki ng Bac k by Sheila Nickols
T
he book launch for Daphne Sleigh’s biography of Father Dunstan Massey was a resounding success. The event was April 27th in Mission, where crowds of art and history fans bought out the supply of the beautifully illustrated book, The Artist in the Cloister: The Life and Works of Father Dunstan Massey. The line up of people waiting to have their book signed by author Daphne Sleigh and artist Father Dunstan delayed the formal opening. Some people dashed off to Black Bond Books to buy copies when the supply ran out. Westminster Abbey, with its iconic bell tower on top of Mount Mary Ann, seems like a Mission landmark that has always been there. In fact, the Benedictine abbey was first located in Ceperley House in Deer Park, Burnaby, now the home of the Burnaby Art Gallery. The Benedictines purchased their hilltop
location in 1945. Here they began preparing to build their seminary and church. The church was not completed until 1955. Architect Asbjorn Gathe brought his Norwegian sensibility to the design of the Westminster Abbey church. The soaring arched ceiling and grey cement walls suited the simplicity of the Benedictine order. Gathe rejected the idea of traditional stained glass windows picturing saints, preferring the abstract kaleidoscope of colour that illuminates the interior. Artist Father Dunstan Massey devoted his talents to decorating the interior of the Abbey and rectory. William Harold Massey was born in 1924 in Vancouver, the only child of William and Mary Massey. His exceptional talents in both art and music emerged early in his life, encouraged by the teachers at his Catholic school. He excelled at his piano lessons, progressing so quickly that his teachers expected him to have a career as a concert pianist. Even more striking
was the maturity of his drawing and painting. With the help of a generous patron, Bill Massey was enrolled in the Vancouver School of Art in 1939, with teacher Jack Shadbolt. Bill was not attracted by Shadbolt’s modern abstract style, but stayed with his unique ideas, often drawing figures from mythology. He had enough work to have a well received exhibition in the Vancouver Art Gallery in 1940. More studies followed at the Academy of Applied and Fine Art. Father Dunstan Massey’s work in Westminster Abbey that is visible to the public is his impressive series of relief sculptures around the walls of the church. These major pieces took years of physical work, as well as their artistic designs. The sculptures feature saints and religious figures, including Abraham, John the Baptist, and St. Michael. The church is open to visitors in the afternoon. A long delayed project was the huge fresco on one wall of the refectory, The Celestial Banquet. Unlike Leonard da
Vinci’s Last Supper”, Father Dunstan’s image is the heavenly banquet of Jesus with his disciples. A Knowledge Network video about the creation of this fresco and Father Dunstan’s other art work was shown for the first time in 2006. Historian Daphne Sleigh had just finished her biography of Major Matthews, The Man Who Saved Vancouver, when she saw the television show about Father Dunstan. With the permission of Abbott John Braganza and the full co-operation of Father Dunstan, her research went ahead. Daphne became interested in researching local history when she wrote several chapters of Maple Ridge: A History of Settlement in 1972. She served as the first curator of the Maple Ridge Museum in 1974. Her book Discovering Deroche won the Lieutenant-Governor’s Medal in 1984. Her splendid work on the life and art of Father Dunstan was published by Heritage House. Sheila Nickols is past president of the Maple Ridge Historical Society.

Journey Through The Looking Glass Alice returns to wonderland in Xtreme theatre’s musical adaptation by M o ni s ha M a r tin s staff reporter
W
hen Alice returns to Wonderland, her imaginary world is a little darker. “I think I like it better than Alice in Wonderland,” says Port Coquitlam’s Anna Pothecary, who like Alice, is on the cusp of adulthood. “She has to become queen and defeat this bad, Red Queen but all she wants to do is get back home.” Cast as the protagonist in a musical adaptation of Through the Looking Glass, 17-year-old Pothecary relates to young Alice’s journey. Brilliantly adapted by Chris Blackwood, this version melds stories from the original Alice with its sequel to create a new tale, complete with a quest. Blackwood uses the idea of a young girl on the verge of becoming an adult to structure a new story from the episodic nightmare she is caught in. Whilst keeping close to the characters that inhabit Lewis Carroll’s nonsense, Through The Looking Glass-the musical give them a different purpose on Alice’s new journey. They become pieces in the game that she plays to become an adult, all representing something to be learnt on her rites of passage. Alice’s main adversary, the Red Queen, represents the childlike traits she is about to escape and the defeat of the Red Queen is the final task that allows Alice to move on. A little unsure at first, Pothecary admits she “kind of relate to Alice.” “I think some of her thought processes are a bit like mine. She’s kind of imaginative, like me,” she says with a shy smile, adding she’s definitely more mature than tantrumprone Alice.
Her brother Matt, who shares codirecting duties in this Xtreme Theatre production, crafted a back story to help her embody Alice on stage. “It’s a process of discovery with every character,” says Matt Pothecary. “It’s working with them to bring out their character and helping them to understand who their character is, where they are coming from and what matters to them that helps them inform their choices on stage.” As the Tweedles, Katherina Holm, 14 and Mateo Pires, 17, have capitalized on their close friendship. “We feed off each other pretty well,” says Holm, a Mission resident who plays Tweedledee. In this version, the Tweedles are fraternal twins and lumberjacks, not overweight and pudgy. The directors chose lumberjacks to contrast of a tough exterior, with the Tweedles’ silly dialogue and silly actions. It makes for great comedy. Just like Alice, both Pires and Holm were tasked with creating their own past for the Tweedles. Pires imagined the twins had not seen any other people in a long, long time. So when Alice shows up, we put on a show, he explains. “We think really highly of ourselves,” says Pires, who compares his Tweedledum to a “Gaston-esque” character from Beauty and the Beast. For the cast of 45, who have been rehearsing since the beginning of the school year, the long hours and occasional stress have been worth it. The musical opens next week at the ACT and Pires says once he gets on stage, everything changes. “You get pumped up and go for it,” he says.

Pitt Meadows Danielle places second in B.C. Band contest Up-and-coming singer is going to record a new demo by M onisha M ar t ins staff reporter
Contributed
DaniElle, aka Danielle Severinski, placed second in Youthink’s B.C. Best Teen Band contest.
Penning a love song was easy for Danielle Severinski. The Pitt Meadows teen has been singing since she was a child, honing her vocal chops at church. “I enjoy song writing the most,” says Severinski, who started taking music seriously a little over a year ago in Grade 11. The 17-year-old entered Youthink magazine’s B.C.’s Best Teen Contest on a whim last year, mailing her entry in just two days before the cut-off date. “I totally forgot about it,” says Severinski, who sings as DaniElle and grew up on a dairy farm in Pitt Meadows. In January, out of more than 40 entries, DaniElle made the top 10. Only then, did Severinski set out to lasso local fans, who pushed her all the way to top
three by voting every week. “I went to every computer class in school and got people to vote for me,” says Severinski, with a laugh. Those votes landed Severinski a spot in the Top Three showcase at Electric Owl in Vancouver, where she snagged second place in the contest on April 27. Blues rock band The Racket took first place and The Flying FishMongers placed third. DaniElle sang three original songs for the contest - Changed Your Mind, Someone’s Good for Nothing and Country Girl and a medley of covers. She was backed by a band of classmates - Terry Chen on piano, Aidan Pauls on lead guitar, Jordan Jones on bass, Jareen Louis on drums and Martijn Van Ramshorst on guitar. Severinski will be recording a demo for Country Girl at Nimbus as a result of her win and uses the $750 in prize money for a few more demos. “It definitely boosts your ego,” says Severinski. “When I got there it didn’t matter where I placed. I just wanted to soak in everything. But now I’m planning on pursing music and I’m going to try as hard as I can.” • Hear DaniElle’s songs at mapleridgenew.com. The Music Man marches into the ACT in Maple Ridge this week. The Showstoppers Academy of Performing Arts features more than 40 students from Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, ranging in age from 12 to 23. Meredith Wilson’s The Music Man is a comedy that has entertained audiences since 1957. Set in the innocence of the early 20 century, it is the fun and comical story of a travelling salesman and con-
man Harold Hill (played by Kelsey Tierney and Ali Waton), who sets out to swindle the good people of River City, Iowa meanwhile for the first time in his life he “gets his foot caught in the door” when he falls for music teacher Marian Paroo (played by Molly Burgess and Ashlyn O’Shea). Featuring big characters, upbeat songs and bright dance numbers, The Music Man teaches us tha music can change people’s lives for the better.

Hearing loss on the increase Hearing loss is one of the fastest growing and most prevalent, chronic conditions facing Canadians today, and though it effects roughly three million residents, most ignore symptoms and delay evaluations because of the stigma associated with it. May is National Better Hearing Month, and the Sonus Hearing Care Center at Unit 32020398 Dewdney Trunk Rd. in Maple Ridge is offering the public complimentary hearing screenings to identify hearing loss. Appointments required. “Millions suffer from hearing loss but since it happens gradually, most people don’t recognize the signs and eventually have it point-
ed out to them by a friend or family member,” said Randi Monsell, Sonus’ regional manager. “If the TV or radio volume keeps getting louder, if you’re asked to repeat yourself more than once, if you find that your loved one is withdrawing from social situations more than before, these could all be signs of hearing loss. “We are encouraging spouses, companions, and caregivers to bring loved ones in for a free screening if they suspect any hearing loss.” He added that having personal support during a screening can be comforting and helpful – plus people are more likely to follow through with any next steps if they’re not alone.
EVERYONE’S EARS ARE DIFFERENT. WIDHH is different too. Your hearing is assessed by a trusted Registered Audiologist and we offer a wide range of hearing aid brands.
We’re different because your hearing is different. That’s why everyone needs a different hearing aid.

Lady Bruins lose in B.C. final
Final word on full-time hockey DOHO The contentious issue of whether Ridge Meadows Minor Hockey should hire a full-time director of hockey operations will be decided on Monday evening. The association’s executive board will hold a meeting that will be open to general members at the South Bonson Community Centre at 6:45 p.m. It is intended to be a final discussion and vote on the issue. The vote will be done by secret ballot. The meeting will not be held in camera, but guests will not be allowed to participate in discussion.
The Ridge Meadows ladies rugby team came up just short of a B.C. championship last weekend, with a 22-17 loss against United Rugby club of Tri-Cities. It definitely wasn’t for lack of trying said club spokesperson Alison Granholm. “We were missing a few starters and when you are playing the bigger clubs depth of players becomes the issue.” The game started off with a try by United to put them up 7-0. The Lady Bruins came back with a try by Sophie Towne to get them close at 7-5 but United closed the first half off with another try to make the score 12-5. In the second half the ladies of Ridge opened the scoring with a try by Michelle Kieselbach to close the score to 12-10. United came back with another try putting them up 17-10 but the ladies didn’t give up, with Bri Railain scoring a try and converting it to even the score at 17-17. With less than five minutes in the tied contest, United went up again, and this time the Bruins had no answer. United won the women’s second division championship, known as the Ged Griffiths Cup.

MMA fighter wins her way to Ireland Local mixed martial arts phenom Belle Gagnon has done it again. The 11-year-old from Maple Ridge is training to represent Canada in Ireland in August, after she took home another gold medal and a silver from the Can-Am International Championships last weekend at the Richmond Oval. She landed the silver medal after moving up to a heavier weight class because there wasn’t enough fighters in her weight class in Pankration (MMA), in which she fights in the 68-77 lbs. class. She fought much bigger opponents, with the bronze medal winner weighing in at 101lbs. In the Brazilian Jujitsu competition she dispatched her opponents with ease, and went undefeated against both girls and boys.

Pitt player receives unique opportunity by Nei l Corbe tt staff reporter
A sports career can take a player to a lot of interesting places. When Pitt Meadows secondary football player Anthony Gagnon posted his profile to a prospects website, he was hoping it would catch the eye of college scouts. So he was a little surprised when he was offered the chance to play for an adult North America team traveling to Central American countries. The Marauders Grade 12 can do a lot for a football team, and he has been a standout wide receiver and kicker. At six-foot-three and 200 pounds, he was a conference and provincial all-star last year, and had 28 catches for

Anthony Gagnon will be playing for a North American team in Costa Rica and Panama. 592 yards and 10 touchdowns. His team made the provincial semifinals. On June 14 he will fly to Jacksonville, Florida for a three-day training camp. From there, they will fly to Panama to play one game, and then bus to Costa Rica for a second game. “It’s a once-in-a-life-
time trip.” He is looking forward to exposure to the brand of pro football they play in Central American league. Gagnon has been scouted by two NCAA first division teams, as well as two CIS teams from the Maritimes. He is also looking at playing a season of ju-
nior football, and he is talking with the Okanagan Sun and Langley Rams. Gagnon must pay for his own flight to Florida, and from there the team will pick up his expenses. He needs to come up with $1,900, is looking for sponsorships, and can be contacted at agagnon95@hotmail.com.

OBITUARIES
Peter Adler It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved son, brother, uncle and friend, Peter Adler, after a brief and courageous battle with cancer. He passed away at Ridge Meadows Hospital in the early morning of April 22 with his mother by his side. Peter was born in Vancouver and lived his entire life in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, although his passion for travel took him to many wonderful places throughout the world. He also was an ardent fan of the Western Hockey League and attended many games with the New Westminster Bruins of years ago and more recently the Chilliwack Bruins and Vancouver Giants. Peter spent his entire working career as a bookkeeper/accountant most recently employed for over 24 years with Dale Matheson, Carr-Hilton Labonte LLP and their predecessor firm. He has been described as being a genius with an almost photographic memory, able to recall numeric entries from years past. This same mind also could recall almost any bit of hockey history. Left to mourn their loss are Peter’s mother, Hildegard Adler; father, Hermann Adler (Ann); sister, Ruth Adler; niece, Arden Buechert; his many friends, coworkers, and the members of his church. Thank you to Peter’s friends and everyone who supported him throughout his brief hospitalization, including the staff at Ridge Meadows Hospital who tried to make his life more comfortable during his last days. Peter was able to face his final days with strength, dignity, and humour. Please join us in a celebration of Peter’s life to be held this Saturday, May 11th at 2:00pm at the High Way Church, 21746 Lougheed Highway, Maple Ridge, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations in Peter’s memory may be sent to the SPCA or to the Living Way Foursquare Church.

HONEYSETT, Gary Wayne CORDONI, Margaret 1929-2013 She called herself a tough old Scottie, and was married for 66 years to Dante, a feisty Italian. She worked so hard her whole life. She could run a gillnetter through the coastal straights at night, make gravy like no one on earth, build numerous fences for her children’s homes, and caught more salmon than Dan in their retirement. She is still much loved by her best friend and husband, Dan, her 3 children, Bob (Heather), Pat (Stewart), Terrie, her 5 grandchildren, Trina (Cam), Dax (Allison), Meghan (Russ), Cam (Carla), Dan (Erica), Ryan (Ashley), and Kevin, and she was thrilled to have 3 beautiful great grandchildren, Kai, Lily, and Hazel. She always protected all of us, like a she bear with her cubs. We raise a glass of wine to you mom you made life good for us!
Gary was born in Hamilton, Ontario on August 15, 1939. He passed away in Maple Ridge, BC on May 3, 2013. Predeceased by his daughter Michelle. He is survived by his wife Anne Louise, daughters Tamara (Vincent), Amanda (Garth) and 4 grandchildren; brother Bruce (Georgina), sister in law Christine, many nieces, nephews family and friends from coast to coast. A Celebration of Life was held Tuesday, May 7th at St. John the Divine Anglican Church in Maple Ridge. Donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society, St. John the Divine Anglican Church or charity of your choice. I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come,
nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
