Councillor Michelle Sparrow puts some muscle into the “Swing the Sledge” kickoff to Aldergrove’s 10th annual Extreme Home Repair on Friday morning. Rot and mold are among the challenges to this year’s Extreme Home Repair project.

Extreme Home Makeover swings into action By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star

With the swing of hammers and axes the 10th annual Extreme Home Repair began Friday morning in Aldergrove. Some 200 to 300 volunteers will contribute to the major reconstruction and remodeling of the older single story home over the next two weeks, in time for the “big reveal” on Victoria Day for homeowner Cathy Dunn and her two sons, Ian and Jamie. The Dunn family was selected for this year’s project by the AOK outreach team and Aldergrove Seventh-day Adventist Church, which started this annual makeover 10 years ago to “enhance lives by providing home repairs for families who are in extreme need.” Pastor Mike Dauncey said, “Extreme

Home Repair has made a difference in rebuilding the quality of lives in our community.” Friday’s “Swing the Sledgehammer” event kicked off the work. Following brief speeches to the crowd, MLA Rich Coleman, Township Councillor and Deputy Mayor Michelle Sparrow and Fire Chief Steven Gamble were invited to take the first swings at the old house with hammers and axes. Then the Extreme Home Repair team swung into action, ripping out old drywall and siding. Dauncey said work will continue daily, except Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and he invited anyone who wished to help to simply show up at the house at 26579 30A Avenue. “Anyone can volunteer, and we will put you to work,” said Dauncey. What began in 2004 as a “humble

effort” to repair siding and plumbing in the first home that was selected has grown into a major upgrade valued at well over $150,000 in labour and materials. All materials, like the labour, are contributed by some 125 corporate donors as well as other volunteers. In the case of the Dunn home, a leaky roof and the resulting mold means that the entire home will be stripped to the bones to ensure that all rot and suspect materials can be replaced. The roof will be replaced and the interior will also be redesigned for a more modern “open” layout. The Dunn family will be staying at a hotel for the two weeks, courtesy of the AOK team, and will return on Monday, May 20, at 5 p.m., when the homecoming party will host the “reveal party” and show the family the results.

Work on the $33.5 million East Langley Water Supply project officially began with a ground-breaking ceremony on Wednesday, May 1, to mark the first phase of work on a new pipeline to bring Metro Vancouver water to Aldergrove and Gloucester. It is the biggest project ever undertaken by the Township of Langley’s engineering department, with 14 kilometres of water main and a booster pump station. Phase 1 will run a one-metre diameter steel water main between Willoughby and Murrayville, following 72 Avenue, 210 Street, Worrell Crescent, 216 Street, 56 Avenue, and 224 Street. Work will run Monday to Friday until December 2013. East Langley’s water currently comes from seven groundwater wells. In the summer when water usage peaks each year, water restrictions have to be enforced. The Aldergrove Community Plan projects increased demand for water, with the population in the area growing from 12,000 to 20,000 people within 20 to 30 years. Mayor Jack Froese said the project will ensure a sustainable supply of water. “Aldergrove and Gloucester’s current water supply comes from ground water aquifers and aging wells, and long-term monitoring has shown this is not sustainable,” Froese said. “It [the project] will significantly pay off in the long run.” Ramin Seifi, Langley Township’s general manager of engineering and community development said SUBMITTED PHOTO bringing in water A 36-inch diameter steel water main from Metro Vancouwill be installed between Willoughby ver will reduce the and Murrayville to bring sustainable rate at which local Metro Vancouver water to Aldergrove aquifers are being and Gloucester. The East Langley Water Supply Project will not be paid through property taxes. Instead, it will be funded through higher utility fees that went up a couple of years ago to pay for the project.

Witnesses sought to two collisions Aldergrove Star

Langley RCMP are investigating two separate injury collisions on Sunday, May 5. The first collision was reported just before 2 p.m. Officers attended the intersection of 56 Avenue and 200 Street where one vehicle was overturned and the occupant was injured and trapped inside. The driver, a 41 year old Langley woman, was extricated from her Ford Escape by Langley Township Fire Department and immediately transported to hospital via Air Ambulance. The Air Ambulance had been dispatched due the apparent seriousness of the collision. Fortunately, however, the driver’s injuries appeared to be relatively minor. Witnesses advised police that the overturned vehicle had been northbound on 200 Street, proceeding through a green light at 56 Avenue, when it was struck by an eastbound Chrysler Sebring. The Sebring then collided with a third vehicle, a 2011 Kia Sorento. No one was injured in the Sorento. The driver of the Sebring, a 67 year old Surrey woman, was issued a violation ticket for failing to stop at a red light. One of her two passengers suffered minor injuries and was treated at hospi-

tal.

The second collision occurred just over an hour later in Aldergrove at the intersection of 240 Street and 48 Avenue. A 2006 Toyota Sienna was eastbound on 48 Avenue and was making a right hand (southbound) turn onto 240 Street. The Sienna collided with a southbound 1966 Chevrolet Caprice. The collision caused the Caprice to go off road to the left and collide with a 2005 Jeep Liberty parked in a residential driveway. The driver of the Sienna, a 63 year old Langley woman, was transported to hospital by BC Ambulance for treatment of her non life threatening injuries. The driver of the Caprice, a 55 year old male, also from Langley, was transported by Air Ambulance for treatment of severe but non life threatening injuries. He is expected to make a full recovery. There is a stop sign for eastbound traffic on 48 Avenue and police are unsure if the Sienna stopped and proceeded into the intersection or whether it never stopped at all. To date, there are no witnesses to this collision. Anyone with information on either collision is asked to please call Langley RCMP at 604-532-3200.

Family pledges $100,000 to hospital By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star

A family-driven fundraiser for BC Children’s Hospital got off to a good start Thursday with a parking lot barbecue that gathered $429 for the cause. Gary Ahuja has pledged to raise $100,000 for the hospital in his lifetime, in appreciation for the hospital’s life-saving work for his young daughter. Little Maya Ahuja is now almost three years old but came close to dying when she was a newborn, due to a congenital heart defect. She underwent open heart surgery at four months old but her heart

had flat-lined shortly after the operation and ceased beating for 22 minutes. The BC Children’s Hospital team restored her pulse and after six weeks of being hooked up to ECMO, a heart and lung machine, Maya was able to come home with her family. Maya still faces challenges and will require further heart surgery, but she is doing well and is this year’s “A World of Smiles Telethon Champion Child.” Maya will be featured on the BC Children’s Hospital Telethon on May 26. Gary’s brother Vipan works for EV Logistics in Gloucester

Industrial Estates, and organized Thursday’s barbecue in their parking lot. Thanks to food contributions from Overwaitea Foods, and the support of volunteer cooks and the lunchtime crowds, the barbecue had no expenses and netted $429 for BC Children’s Hospital. Gary has also organized a fundraising dinner for the cause on May 10 at Abbotsford’s Zaika Taste of India restaurant, and this event is already sold out. However, anyone can contribute by going to the telethon website www.bcchf.ca/SuperHeroPages and click on Team Miracle Maya, or by calling during the telethon.

Langley Environmental Partners Society (LEPS) will receive Federal funding for two projects in the Bertrand Creek and Salmon River watersheds in Langley. One habitat restoration and landowner outreach project will receive a grant of $78,884 from Environment Canada. It will address key threats of habitat degradation in the Bertrand Creek and Salmon River water-

sheds for two aquatic species at risk, Nooksack Dace and Salish Sucker and two terrestrial species at risk, Oregon spotted frog and Oregon Forest Snail. LEPS will plant 5,000 native plants in streamside areas, enhance 5,000 square metres of riparian habitat and remove invasive plants from 5,000 square metres of habitat. During school months, Langley youth will also be engaged through

workshops, field tours and hands-on involvement in riparian restoration projects. “This grant will address key threats of habitat degradation in the Bertrand Creek and Salmon River watersheds of two aquatic and two terrestrial species at risk. Langley residents, including Langley youth, will have the opportunity to work with LEPS to support the recovery of species at risk,” said MP Mark Warawa.

LEPS will also receive a grant of $40,945 from Environment Canada to restore 3.6 hectare riparian habitat along Bertrand Creek. This area is considered to be a critical habitat for indigenous and endangered species and will target both public and private involvement in its restoration. Taking place from August 2013 to August 2014, this project will focus on five riparian enhancement areas to increase the integrity and func-

tion of riparian habitat, plant 2500 indigenous species, remove invasive species and directly engage two parttime jobs and 250 volunteers in restoration activities. “Conservation and education are key components to preserving the riparian habitat along Bertrand Creek,” said Warawa. “Langley residents will have the opportunity to work with LEPS to support the restoration of this critical habitat.”

Two young male drivers had their cars impounded last Wednesday night after they were caught street racing in west Abbotsford. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said an officer was in the area of Mt. Lehman Road and Great Northern Avenue when he saw two Hondas driving side by side at speeds estimated to be between 130 and 150 km/hr. The vehicles were headed north, and the officer alerted another officer in the area. They lost sight of the Hondas but came across them on Mt. Lehman Road near Peardonville Road, where one of the cars had crashed into a ditch. The driver, who had only his “N” (new driver) designation and was in his parents’ car, had to be helped out of the vehicle. He was not seriously injured, but was taken to hospital as a precaution.

VICTORIA – When Adrian Dix took over as B.C. NDP leader two years ago, he struggled to communicate, especially in the sound bites of radio and TV. There was a running joke in the legislature press gallery: It didn’t matter what question you asked him, you got a six-minute answer that ended with the evils of log exports. Even more than under Carole James, the NDP railed against log exports. “B.C. logs for B.C. jobs” became one of Dix’s favourite slogans. As the election approached, another Dixism was heard daily: “Say what you’re going to do, say how you’re going to pay for it.” So it was a surprise a few weeks ago when the NDP signaled it would essentially not offer a policy on log exports. They’re going to meet with “stakeholders” and come up with a plan after they get a majority government. This is exactly the same non-policy the NDP had in 2009. They don’t have an answer to the industry’s point that the high price gained by premium logs in foreign markets is what keeps many loggers working, and subsidizes the harvest of other logs for B.C. coastal mills. Another thing the NDP doesn’t like is private power development. This issue featured prominently in the NDP leadership contest two

NDP to voters: trust us

years ago. Leadership contender Mike Farnworth told the party faithful he would study independent power purchase contracts, and if he found that they are not in the public interest, he would “mend them or end them.” Another leadership hopeful, energy critic John Horgan, allowed that he would “break” contracts if necessary. By this spring, Dix had a new non-position on power purchase contracts. He will “assess them and address them.” The printed platform promises a review “within the limits of existing contracts.” Either they plan to risk a costly legal battle, or they’re just paying lip service. All you have to do to find out is elect them. Labour code changes are another blank slate. A memo from the B.C. Federation of Labour executive to members last year described how they were working closely with the NDP to rewrite B.C. labour law. The NDP election platform punts this issue until after the election as well, promising an independent expert panel to decide on issues like whether to end secretballot votes for union certification. This isn’t just a bad idea, it’s a 30-year-old bad idea. It’s based on the destructive old notion that employers are the enemy of workers, and only a union

can protect them. The long decline of union membership in the private sector isn’t caused by employer bullying or secret-ballot votes that protect employees’ freedom of choice. The cause is global competition. The only protection workers have from that is their own efficiency. Balancing the budget? An NDP government will strive to do that over “the business cycle,” says finance critic Bruce Ralston. Oldtimers might remember this one. It’s taken from the NDP’s 1991 election platform. Yes, 22 years ago there was a widespread belief in a predictable four-year cycle of commodity prices and other economic determinants. Whatever was left of that dusty, faded picture was erased with the financial collapse of 2008. If you still believe in a predictable “business cycle,” you may be willing to accept that an NDP-led B.C. will become the first jurisdiction in human history to eliminate poverty, by setting annual targets and paying out borrowed money to low-income parents. On ferries, fracking, union contracts, capital construction and other weighty matters, the NDP’s answer is the same: trust us. Young readers value support of ‘hometown’ community Editor: I am a parent at Parkside Elementary School and for the last two years I have co-run an After School Reading Club. The idea for this club came from working with Principal Greig McArthur on the School Planning Committee. While working with him I received a better understanding how literacy challenges with our students can have a huge negative impact in meeting all of their education needs throughout their school life and into adulthood. Our club runs once a week for one hour and we create an atmosphere where reading is looked at as fun. We have Parkside student “leaders” who are also involved in those program to help promote reading in a fun environment. We start with a healthy snack, the principal reads a book to the children, we break out into three rooms to read with the children in a variety of ways and have fun activities that promote literacy. Throughout a school year we have three different “terms” that allow a large amount of students to go through our program. Each term will see approximately 80 to 100 children involved. We also have volunteer parents involved overseeing the students as they all work

together. At the end of each term we have a celebration party for the children and congratulate them on their participation within the club. At this time we also let them choose a book to take home with them. Healthy snacks and their take home books do cost money though and we have used creative ideas to raise money for this as we do not charge any fees to the children to join. To run this program for one year costs approximately $1,500. We have held an Everything for a Dollar sale fundraiser in the past, as well as received help from Extra Foods and some parent donations. Our student leaders have done a fabulous job on “leading for example” and “mentoring” the younger children in our club. As a fundraiser for our Grade 5 students’ pool/park barbecue this year we are holding another Everything for A Dollar sale. We are looking for donations of anything - toys, books, bikes, clothes, housewares, furniture, gym equipment, etc. We are accepting donations at the school as of now. The sale will be held on May 23 from 1:30-6 p.m. Thank you for any and all help you can give us. Arlene Kautzman, Aldergrove

Final debate features internet, social media By DAN FERGUSON Aldergrove Star

It was the last debate of the current provincial election campaign in both Langleys and the first to feature social media and online streaming. All nine candidates in the Langley and Fort LangleyAldergrove participated in the two-hour Wednesday night debate held at the Langley Township council chambers. The event was organized by the South Fraser CARP chapter 48 (The acronym originally stood for the Canadian Association of Retired Persons, but that was dropped when the organization changed its mandate to include more than retirement issues). More than 100 people attended, filling the municipal parking lot and packing the council seating area to near-capacity. The debate was broadcast live on the internet and questions were collected via the Twitter social media channel, with online comments projected on one of the large council display screens. Questions were also collected in a more traditional way, with volunteers collecting hand-written questions from the audience. A recording of the live feed was to be posted online. Moderator Kim Richter and a

media panel that included Times editor Frank Bucholtz put the questions to the candidates. It was a wide-ranging debate, covering everything from the HST to transit and more. On the subject of the HST, none of the candidates supported bringing some version of the combined tax back to help small business, which has been struggling with the practical impact of the provincial referendum that reinstated a mix of provincial and federal taxes. The issue of the controversial Wall property proposal to build housing on farmland near TWU saw some disagreement among the Fort Langley-Aldergrove candidates. Conservative Rick Manuel said agricultural preservation rules have to be rethought, while Green party candidate Lisa David was flatly opposed to removing land from the Agricultural Land Reserve. Independent Kevin Mitchell said there was “no compelling reason” to build the project, while incumbent Liberal MLA Rich Coleman said the issue was a matter for the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) which can’t be “interfered with by politicians” and NDP candidate Shane Dyson said the provincial government must give “clear direction” to the ALC about preserving farmland.

Langley candidates split on the carbon tax, with Green hopeful Wally Martin supporting it as “a fee you pay for dumping your garbage in the sky” while Conservative John Cummins dismissed it as “punitive.” “The carbon tax penalizes those of us who live south of the Fraser and don’t have access to [adequate public transit]” Cummins said. Liberal MLA Mary Polak said the government intends to freeze the carbon tax while NDP rival Andrew Mercier said his party would make adjustments to improve the tax. Both incumbent MLAs maintained an optimistic stance in the face of polls showing the Liberal government running behind the opposition NDP. “I believe we’re going to win,” Coleman said, hinting Liberal polls show the race is “tightening up.” “We’ve been narrowing that gap,” Coleman said. Polak said as someone who used to operate a small polling company, she knows that “pollsters don’t win elections, voters do.” Asked later how they would handle being in opposition, both again said they didn’t expect that will happen, but if it does, they expected to work as local MLAs representing local interests in

Victoria. On transit, all of the Langley contenders agreed there is plenty of room for improvement, but their solutions varied. The NDP’s Mercier and Liberal Polak were farthest apart, with the New Democrat calling for the revival of the Lower Mainland mayor’s council that used to run TransLink, while Polak said the former TransLink board made up of mayors and councillors was too “Vancouvercentric” and that was why there is a transit “backlog” south of the Fraser. The Green’s Martin took a swipe at Coleman for suggesting the new Port Mann bridge represented a partial transit solution for commuters, calling the notion “kind of amusing” while Conservative Cummins took issue with tolls, estimating the fees for bridge crossings amount to a yearly tax of $1,800 for those who have to use them regularly. Only one of the candidates was willing to endorse the amalgamation of both Langleys into one city, while the rest said that was a matter for both communities to decide themselves. The Green’s Lisa David felt a merged municipality would be more efficient. “It would reduce the redundancies,” she said. “I believe amalgamation should happen.”

Voters sound off on B.C.’s election choices

Editor: I’m concerned that many British Columbians are more focused on “change” for the sake of change rather than electing the party most likely to foster job creation and financial stability. Our province’s resource endowment has always been a mainstay of both jobs and the generation of revenues needed to fund social programs. From what I have seen and heard, an NDP government would rev-up spending while stymieing resource development through endless environmental reviews and or by just saying “no”, driving investment to other provinces and other countries. We need new mines and gas fields, pipelines, refineries, ports and processing plants to replace jobs lost by technological change and by events like the pine beetle catastrophe. Economic development and the protection of the environment are not mutually exclusive. Yes, we must be good stewards of our beautiful province, but we do have the technology to move the econ-

omy forward in an environmentally responsible manner. Saying no to new projects will mean job losses for currently employed and no opportunity for young people looking to join the work force. We also need to focus on balancing the provincial budget, rather than taking money away from social programs to fund rising interest costs. Forty years of experience in business has taught me that too much debt is crippling. It scares me that the NDP have rolled out billions of dollars in new spending during this campaign, and their “every dollar is accounted for” rhetoric just isn’t credible because their anti-development attitude will reduce revenue at the same time as spending rises. There is truth to the adage, “Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it”. The NDP came to power in 1991 and governed the rest of that decade. Investment dried up and economic growth trailed the rest of Canada. A low point came when the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce thanked the B.C.

government for driving growth investment in Alberta. Glen Clark’s 1996-1999 tenure was arguably the most disastrous for B.C. and with Adrian Dix, Premier Clark’s former Chief of staff leading the province, I’d be very worried about history repeating itself. It took many years for the Liberals to repair the damage. During their time in government, North America suffered through a major recession and yet we now have a triple-A credit rating, higher than the U.S. government, allowing B.C. taxpayers the lowest possible interest rates Have the Liberals done everything right? Certainly not. The introduction of the HST by the Campbell government was badly handled. There have been other gaffes and ill thought out policies. And while there is a natural inclination for people to vote to change long governing parties, it’s important not to let the NDP sleepwalk to victory without thinking about which party is likely to create jobs and not burden today’s young people with a

mountain of debt. I’m not asking that you agree with me, only that you think through the full consequences of your choice carefully. And then get out and vote on May 14. Gwyn Morgan, Victoria ***** Editor: I am not dedicated or a member of any party. I tend to vote where I think I can steer the vote for the good of the province or country. I like the Greens for their ideals. I like the Conservatives because I like their leader, not the party. I like the NDP because I see them as the only party that has a chance of winning the election. For the good of the province I want to get the Liberal government out. My fear is that a vote for a party you like or belong to that has no chance of winning could water down the chances for a party that can. Yes the Liberals could be here for another term if the opposing vote them is fragmented. So, decide what you want, what we need, and how to get it. John Winter, Langley

This is such a beautiful time of year. Driving around Aldergrove, Langley or wherever, I know that we live in the best province in Canada. The trees, greenery and flowers add such beauty in April. Kudos to John Jackman for receiving the Township’s volunteer award for 2013. John has put so much time in and had a real influence on Aldergrove. This event was held at the Langley

Events Centre on April 4. The Bradner Flower Show opened April 12 and it was the 85th year for this event. Florists and growers set up their arrangements in such creative displays. The lunch area is a treat to see with homemade soup, sandwiches and goodies. The general meeting was held April 22 at the Seniors and Vets Club. A potluck and card bingo was enjoyed by members. The elections are coming up and

the club is also looking for new members. On the following Wednesday Bob’s Steakhouse held an art show with some very talented local artists displaying digital art, jewelry and oil paintings. The Aldergrove Legion held their annual flea market on April 21 with sellers indoors and outdoors. There was all manner of great food for sale as well as all the treasures a family could find. The Aldergrove FireFit

Festival is coming on May 25-26 at Philip Jackman Park on 32 Avenue. There will be competitions for fire fighters, as well as entertainment and soapbox derby races for the whole family. The parade kicks it all of on Saturday at 10 a.m. Also on Saturday, May 25 will be the Treasure Sale at the Seniors and Vets Club. There will be crafts and baking on sale so stop by the hall on Fraser Highway.

Gardening workshops return to Aldergrove Aldergrove Star

St. Dunstan’s Church is hosting free gardening workshops in the Aldergrove community again this year. Looking to learn new veggie gardening skills? The Garden to Table (G2T) program is working in partnership with Langley Environmental Partners Society (LEPS) to present a Gardening “101” series of free workshops for new or novice gardener on Saturdays at St. Dunstan’s Church Hall at 3025 - 264 Street, Aldergrove. First up is the Backyard Bounty on May 11, 2:30 to 4 p.m. Always wanted to grow your own produce, but not sure where to begin? This workshop for beginners will guide you through decisions such as where to locate your veggie patch,

what to grow, when to plant it, and what to do with the harvest. Gardening with Kids follows on May 25, 2:30 to 4 p.m. Having trouble getting your child to eat their vegetables? Once they learn how to grow their own, they will love eating lettuce and carrots. Be prepared to roll up your sleeves during this hands on workshop for you and your kids. Composting is featured on June 15, 2:30 to 4 p.m. In a landfill it can take up to 20 years for a banana peel to break down. In a backyard compostor, it can take as little as a few weeks. In this workshop learn what type of composting is a good fit for your needs and learn how you can do your part to reduce the amount of waste in our landfills. Canning is the topic on July 13, 2 to 5 p.m. Learn how to safely

preserve the summer harvest. This hands-on workshop guides you through the steps of canning seasonal produce. Bring your own apron, paring knives and cutting board. It’s an adults-only workshop but childcare will be available if needed. Preparing for winter gardening closes the series on August 17, 2:30 to 4 p.m. On the west coast we can harvest fresh vegetables from our gardens year-round. Learn what you can plant in the summer and fall for harvest in the winter and spring and how to extend the growing season for many fall crops. For more information or to register for the workshops, please call St. Dunstan’s at 604-856-5393 or email: st.dunstans@telus.net. Space is limited, so register as soon as you can.

On April 27 the BC Aquasonics provincial stream and pre-competitive athletes had a command performance at Synchro BC’s Lower Mainland Regional meet at Walnut Grove Aquatic Centre, bringing home gold medals in each of the nine events they entered. Over 100 athletes from across the Lower Mainland came together for this meet, including 37 from the Aquasonics. “We are so proud of our athletes,” says BC Aquasonics coach leader, Tanya Magee. “For some of them, this was their very first time at a synchro meet and they are thrilled to have such great success. For the provincial level competitive athletes, this was their first big test of the year in an official competition and they passed with flying colours. Next stop is the Jean Peters Provincial Championships in Saanich, May 24 to 26.” Three of the BC Aquasonics athletes at this competition will also be going to Ottawa on May 27 for Synchro Canada’s Canadian Espoir Championships, the national competition for high performance athletes age 15 and under. Grace MacDonald (Delta), Abby Rothwell (Delta), and Shaleigh Lachance (Coquitlam) will compete in the 12 and under category against their peers from across Canada, May 29 to June 2 at the Nepean Sports Complex.

Peace of Mind

Planning one’s own funeral arrangements is not easy. Choosing a funeral provider can be just as difficult.

7”

At First Memorial Funeral Services, we have been helping families since 1961 – over 50 years of service to thousands throughout British Columbia. We are the leader in affordable, simple, yet dignified arrangements and for the last two years, named Best Funeral Provider for Greater Vancouver by Consumers Choice Awards. Did you know that you can pre-pay your own arrangements? Depending on your age, payments can run from $15 to $35 a month, for 5, 10, 15, or even 20 years, to keep your monthly costs low. This is a great solution for those on a fixed income. Imagine the peace of mind in having your choices stated in writing and removing the financial burden from your loved ones. Will it be a ‘simple cremation’, burial or a full funeral service? Maybe a celebration of life? We are the only funeral provider in Canada that is endorsed by C.A.R.P, (formerly the Canadian Association of Retired People). If you take the simple steps to join C.A.R.P., our service rates will be subject to a discount, to save you money. Call us today for a personal consultation. If you choose not to pre-pay your services, we’ll give you our Personal Planning Guide at no cost and no obligation.

Watch for our INSERT in this edition of the Aldergrove Star.

The Board of Education of the Langley School District is asking for public input into the preparation of the operating fund component of its 2013-2014 Annual Budget. The 2013-2014 annual budget will be developed following the principles of the Board of Education’s Strategic Plan 2012-2013: Year I of III and the goals of the District Achievement Contract 2011-2014 which includes the particular foci of our Aboriginal Education Programs. The Board is asking that your input take into consideration its four fundamental principles:

While the recent Ministry of Education Funding announcement for next year does provide additional funding of approximately $2.6 million over what the district received in 2010-2013, the District is still projected to have a shortfall in excess of $3.0 million in 2013-2014 based on a status quo expenditure budget. In submitting your feedback, please give consideration to budget reductions and budget additions both from an overall district perspective and from your personal perspective as it relates to a particular school or a particular area of the district. Submit your feedback online via http://bit.ly/SD35Budget2013

1. Having caring, safe and welcoming schools 2. Providing educational opportunities to improve student success 3. Engaging in proactive planning for maintaining healthy and sustainable schools 4. Being responsible stewards of district resources and, the three primary goals of the District Achievement Contract: 1. Improving transition results for our students 2. Improving literacy skills for all students 3. Improving numeracy skills for all students

Summer session opportunities The Langley School District provides a variety of summer learning opportunities for students of many ages to take new courses, improve their marks, explore new subjects, and get additional support to complete courses before moving on to their next grade. • Elementary & Middle Summer Learning (NEW for 2013!) for students in grades 1-8 at numerous locations across Langley, Aldergrove and Fort Langley.

The Board of Education approved the District’s amended annual budget at its February 26th Regular Meeting. The amended budget projects that the $13.5 million operating funding deficit that existed at the end of June 2010 will be completely repaid by June 30, 2013, two years ahead of the Ministry of Education’s approved Deficit Elimination Plan. However, it will be difficult for the District to continue to experience the financial successes of the last three years in 2013-2014 due to significant cost pressures it will face next year, as illustrated below: Teacher pension increase Transition back to GST/PST system Retroactive 2.0% wage lift for CUPE (with benefits) 2013-2014 2.0% wage lift for all (with benefits) Richard Bullpit startup costs Middle school staffing Addition of trades staff Other benefit increases Utilities & waste diversion increases General inflation

• Secondary Full Credit Courses for students in grades 8-12, now at both Langley Secondary and Walnut Grove Secondary for 2013. • Secondary Academic Remedial Courses for students in grades 8-11, now at both Langley Secondary and Walnut Grove Secondary for 2013. • ELL/ESL Full Credit courses at Aldergrove Community Secondary, or ELL Non-Credit courses at Langley Secondary.

Eligible BC residents can take courses free of charge, other than a refundable textbook deposit for some courses. Non-BC residents and International Students’ fees are listed along with the courses descriptions. Please check with your current school if you are unsure of your eligibility.
