Election issues aired at library Candidates square off on range of topics in Cloverdale By Jennifer Lang B.C.’s provincial election touched down in Cloverdale Monday night, when candidates for two ridings took part in a forum organized by the Surrey Library Board. Five candidates representing two provincial ridings – Surrey-Cloverdale, and Surrey-White Rock – answered four questions from youth aged 15 to 20, followed by a series of questions from the floor, making for a wide range of topics. Pipelines, B.C.’s Carbon Tax, the environment, transit, post secondary education and the economy were just a sampling of the issues on voters’ minds at the forum May 6 forum. Early on, candidates were asked if elected, what they would do to make post secondary education affordable. Conservative Howard Wu, a technology entrepreneur running in Surrey-Cloverdale, said he valued skills learned inside and outside a traditional post secondary setting. “In my line of work, in my hiring process, we definitely see a lot
of talented web developers and programmers who are maybe high school educated,” he said, adding his party supports making post secondary education more affordable. Stephanie Cadieux, MLA for Surrey-Panorama who’s running in Surrey-Cloverdale, pointed to the Liberal’s track record over the past 12 years, which has seen the addition of 32,000 post secondary seats and seven universities. “We did that because we think it’s important for students to go to school close to home. One, it’s less expensive, and two, because people tend to stay and work where they train.” When candidates were asked what they would do to improve recreational opportunities in Surrey, several pointed out that facilities like rec centres and community programming is under municipal jurisdiction, although Cadieux said she’s already spoken with Surrey’s mayor and council to see what the province can do in terms of targeted investment here. “I think we have a unique situ-

ation in Cloverdale right now,” Cadieux said, referring to rapid residential growth in Clayton. Kooner, who works for the City
of Surrey, added he thinks the province has to provide better funding to cities. “Cloverdale doesn’t have an indoor pool,” he said.

‘Non-blushing’ bride, 70, lauds Cloverdale shop

To the editor;
KRISTY SVEINSON PHOTO
Just recently my family and I were looking for a wedding outfit. I am 70 years young, so do not fit into the blushing bride category. Our first shop was in Chlliwack. It was not a pleasant experience. The next shop was Malary’s in Cloverdale. What a pleasant experience this turned out to be. The people were well informed, and truly made us feel welcome. They helped to make my upcoming wedding more exciting! They made a fuss over my becoming a bride. We cannot thank them enough. To top this service off, they phoned around and found me the perfect shoe for my outfit. Well done, Malary’s.
Reporter reader Kristy Sveinson sent in this sweetly seasonal photo of her dogs, Sami and Sofi, ‘loving spring!’ Thanks, Kristy!

A Liberal party beatdown? Call it a parting gift To the editor; Re: “Time for a change,” Opinions, May 2 True, the B.C. Liberals have been written off for dead by many ‘professionals,’ and I must admit that I like the way that sounds. If such becomes the actual case, as a parting gift to the B.C. populace, they could lose ASAP their blatant misnomer party title (a practice that most political parties unfortunately adopt). But the B.C. “Liberal” Party is going way too far. The party was once fairly close to being truly ‘liberal,’ albeit while under the leadership of the most progressive of the three Gordons (Wilson, I believe), when the party finally made it onto the scene as Official Opposition in 1991, on top of smoldering Socred ruins. But the current B.C. Liberal Party does not get any closer to being ‘liberal’ than whatever’s ‘liberal’ about their true Libertarian ideology (look it up; it can get kind of scary in its more fervent mode). I guess it’s all something quite like that paradox Progressive Conservative Party thing … Frank Sterle Jr. White Rock

Dear MP Russ Hiebert: You are likely aware of the charges against Conservative staffer Michael Sona in the election fraud. To be clear, I am referring to the 2011 “robocalls” election fraud, and not the 2008 “In and Out Scandal” Conservative election fraud, nor the 2006 Conservative election overspending by $18.3 million dollars. My question to you is, in a party that claims transparency, and that runs on a platform of criminal justice, when will you publicly demand that Stephen Harper call an inquiry into the case? Are we all to believe that a junior staffer in his early 20s singlehandedly conjured, orchestrated, and funded the entire affair? Stephen Harper has repeatedly been asked in Parliament, and by countless Canadians (myself included) to hold an inquiry – yet he refuses. Further, your party initially struck down legislation which would have given Elections Canada additional power to investigate this criminal activity. Why? Why? Why? The only reasonable conclusion is that Stephen Harper fears the legal consequences, and is protecting individuals – likely high up in the Conservative Party – and perhaps even himself. I was entirely impressed that you stood up to the muzzling by Stephen Harper recently to protect the rights of female Canadians. Now I am asking you to please stand up for the the rights of all Canadians, and publicly demand an inquiry or better yet, a Royal Commission on the most fundamental requirement of our democracy – a fair and legal election. Perhaps it is time to do your country proud, gather your like-minded colleagues, and cross the floor to sit as Independents and force an election. To the majority of Canadians, I assure you that you would be hailed as a hero and your chances of re-election would increase exponentially. Please don’t be complicit in your silence. Please don’t be on the wrong side of history. R. Benoit

Guest views: Evaluating the B.C. Liberals This analysis deals not with the platform but with the more instructive past performance. If I vote Liberal on May 14 it will be for the following reasons. Major reasons: * In 1992, when the NDP was elected, BC’s GDP per capita was 8 per cent above the Canadian average. By 2001, when the NDP was defeated, it was 8 per cent below. Now it’s again above the average. In 2013 Moody’s awarded B.C. its highest possible rating – Triple A. Moody’s praised “the province’s track record of prudent fiscal planning and of managing fiscal pressures effectively.” * B.C. has the lowest income tax rate in Canada for those earning less than $120,000. The small business tax rate is now half what it was under the NDP. * With the Port Mann Bridge and freeway widening the Liberals remedied this bottleneck. * The rebuilt B.C. Place Stadium is spectacular. * The new Convention Centre is magnifi-
cent. * An example of many major projects is Rio Tinto’s scheduled $3.3 billion upgrade to its Kitimat aluminum smelter creating 2,500 construction and 1,000 long-term jobs. Secondary reasons: * The minimum wage was increased to $10.25. * The Canadian Federation of Independent Business awarded B.C. an “A” for leading all provinces in red tape reduction. * Since June, 2012 welfare recipients can earn up to $200 a month without clawback. * With Liberal support, “B.C. is now a world leader in clean tech with over 200 clean tech firms generating an estimated $2.5 billion in revenue in 2011.” – Todd Stone * A 10-point, $2 million anti-bullying strategy was implemented. * An Independent Investigations Office was established to investigate serious cases involving police officers. If I don’t vote Liberal it will be for the follow-
ing reasons. Major reasons: * The costly HST fiasco. * The reprehensible plan to use government resources for partisan gain among ethnics. * Breaking an agreement by cancelling the $6 million legal defence loan despite the fact that senior Liberal staffers Dave Basi and Bob Virk were convicted of crimes in the B.C. Rail case. * When the Liberals were elected in 2001, B.C.’s debt, including the guaranteed agencies’ debt, was $33.6 billion. When Christy Clark took over it was $45 billion. Now it is $56 billion. * In 2011 Auditor General John Doyle stated, “For a government that strives for transparency and accountability this is unacceptable.” * In 2011-12 the government’s Pacific Carbon Trust, which sells carbon credits, collected about 97 per cent of its carbon payments from public institutions. The project is failing. * At 6.7 cents per litre
the carbon tax penalizes consumers but does not reduce pollution. * The new convention centre was to cost $495 million; it cost $883 million. Reconstructing BC Place Stadium was to cost $150 million; it cost $458 million. * One in seven B.C. children lives in poverty. * In 2006 the government rejected the “Missing Women Report”. Many lives might have been saved. It broke its promise not to sell BC Rail. The government’s incredible mishandling of Boss Power’s uranium mine application
cost B.C. taxpayers $30 million. In 2012 the government lost $35 million by rejecting a tentative deal with Telus to rename BC Place Stadium. Secondary reasons: * British Columbians pay more than twice what Ontarians do for generic drugs. * Instead of lowering rates, the Liberals’ 2010 budget transferred $778 million of ICBC surplus funds to general revenue. * $780,000 was spent on a pro-HST mailer that was never mailed. * $100,000 was spent

improving the Coquihalla Toll Plaza a few months before tolls were abolished and it was removed. * After its big sale to CN in 2003, BC Rail was left with 40 kilometres of track and 30 employees. CEO Kevin Mahoney reportedly continued to be paid $500,000 a year. * Numerous high salaries and severances are unconscionable. In 2010 almost 99 per cent of BC Hydro’s 6,000 employees received bonuses totalling $42.3 million. Almost 40 per cent, 2,371, earned more
than $100,000. When Premier Christy Clark released aide Allan Seckel, his severance was $549,776. * The first Family Day holiday cost the average small business $1,135. B.C.’s economy lost at least $200 million. * With rising prices the Property Transfer Tax is unfair. I have studied the issues and have decided how I will vote. I urge all eligible voters to do likewise.

Wu: a new political culture is needed From page one
software. In just one year, the company was sold to San Francisco’s Joyent, a top cloud computing services firm. He’d like to see technology help bring more openness and transparency in opening the lines of communication between government and citizens. The right technology can also make the job of running the province more efficient. Wu says he’s running as the B.C. Conservative candidate in SurreyCloverdale because he believes “the people we elect into office come from the same bureaucracy we’re trying to change.” That change, he says, simply won’t happen without the right culture in government.
Political priorities To Wu, the top priorities in SurreyCloverdale is education and transit. The city has experienced tremendous growth in the past decade, particularly when it comes to families. Wu says families from all over the Lower Mainland are drawn to Sur-
rey because of its unique combination of being in relative proximity to downtown, while having affordable housing prices and a family-focused culture. Infrastructure, however, has not grown accordingly, putting tremendous stress on schools and transit, he says. “I don’t think throwing more money makes problems go away. I believe a responsible government and a caring community is what solves these issues.” The top priority for the province is job creation, says Wu. “We have so many talented immigrants as well as well educated Canadians all wanting to live in this beautiful province. However, the lack of jobs has been challenging. Not just job creation, but creating good jobs like in technology that is also environmental friendly, after all, writing and shipping software doesn’t create too much carbon. I know with the right education and the creative spirit British Columbians have we can make our province work.” – For more, visit www.bcconservative.ca/ team/howard-wu-surrey-cloverdale, and find him on Twitter @HowardWu2013

NDP a risky choice By Gwyn Morgan I’m concerned that many British Columbians are more focused on “change” for the sake of change rather than electing the party most likely to foster job creation and financial stability. Our province’s resource endowment has always been a mainstay of both jobs and the generation of revenues needed to fund social programs. From what I have seen and heard, an NDP government would rev up spending while stymieing resource development through endless environmental reviews and or by just saying “no”, driving investment to other provinces and countries. We need new mines, gas fields, pipelines, refineries, ports and processing plants to replace jobs lost by tech change and the pine beetle catastrophe. Economic development and the protection of the environment are not mutually exclusive. Yes, we must be good stewards of our beautiful province, but we do have the technology to move the economy forward in an environmentally responsible manner. Saying no to new projects will mean job losses and no opportunity for young people looking to join the work force. We also need to focus on balancing the provincial budget, rather than taking money from social programs to fund rising interest costs. Experience in business has taught me too much debt is crippling. The NDP have rolled out billions of dollars in new spending during this campaign, and their “every dollar is accounted for” rhetoric just isn’t credible because their anti-development attitude will reduce revenue while spending rises.

There is truth to the adage, “Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it”. The NDP came to power in 1991 and governed the rest of that decade. Investment dried up and economic growth trailed the rest of Canada. A low point came when the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce thanked B.C. for driving growth investment in Alberta. Glenn Clark’s 1996-1999 tenure was arguably the most disastrous for B.C. and with Adrian Dix, Clark’s former chief of staff leading the province, I’d be very worried about history repeating itself. It took many years for the Liberals to repair the damage. During their time in government, North America suffered a major recession and yet we now have a triple-A credit rating, higher than the U.S., allowing B.C. taxpayers the lowest possible interest rates. Have the Liberals done everything right? Certainly not. The introduction of the HST by the Campbell government was badly handled. There have been other gaffes and ill thought out policies. And while people tend to vote to change long-governing parties, it’s important not to let the NDP sleepwalk to victory without thinking about which party is likely to create jobs and not burden today’s young people with a mountain of debt. I’m not asking that you agree, only that you think through the full consequences of your choice carefully. And get out and vote on May 14.

By Jennifer Lang If local DJ Carson Hoy and crew pull it off, it will be the hottest ticket at this year’s Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair. Hoy is organizing the Youth Stage and 13-18 Teen Night Club in the Alice McKay building, which is doubling as a live performance venue and a teenonly dance club Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights during the fair May 17-19. The venue will showcase live bands from 6 to 9 p.m., including headliner Ray Gibson, an 18-yearold singer/songwriter from Maple Ridge who’s appearing all three nights, as are the bands lined up for the youth stage. Every night, once the live performances are over, the space will transform into a dance club, featuring Deth Klown, a duo consisting of Hoy and Austin Neighbour, and guest DJ Kush, from 9 to 10 p.m. “We’re going to have a masRay Gibson sive sound system,” Hoy says, adding the equipment’s being supplied by Long & McQuade, which already does audio for the fair. A light show with lasers is also an essential part of the mix. Hoy admits the tricky part may in fact be closing it down by 10 p.m. The plan’s a natural fit for Hoy, an accomplished musician, producer, and rising talent as a DJ who spends his nights performing at school dances and parties and his days as a Grade 11 student at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary. He simply wanted to create something specifically for teenagers to do at the Rodeo and country fair – at night. “I’ve been going to the rodeo for basically my whole life,” he says. “High school is when everyone

is allowed to go without their parents. Everybody’s there all weekend, all night, but there’s nothing for the 12 to 18 [age] category,” he says, pointing out there’s plenty on offer in the form of bars, beer gardens, and live entertainment at night – for those 19 and older. So, last year, he emailed the organizers offering to DJ at one of the outdoor or indoor stages. “It was just in the morning, so the kids weren’t out,” he says. Fortunately for the social life of rodeogoing teens everywhere, Hoy got called back this year with a tantalizing offer: “The hall’s open,” he was told. “We’d love for you to do a teen dance.” Before long, he was introducing the idea of putting live bands onstage, too. “So we added those in.”
Youth Stage Acts perform half-hour sets with one hour-long set nightly, by rotation, before Ray Gibson takes the stage for the final hour. Gibson taught herself to play piano and guitar, and her career is steadily gaining ground. She’s worked alongside fellow Canadian country artist Aaron Pritchett and has recently appeared on CTV Morning Live, and opened for Tyler Ward. She Dreams In Colour is a three-piece, all-girl alt/punk band from Surrey. They’ve only been together for a few months, and the performers are 14 to 17 years old. They perform cover songs by their favourite artists but enjoy performing their own material, too. Ransom for the Captives is a pop rock band featuring talented teenagers from Cloverdale. They write their own material
and do some covers. They were recently named Best Band at Surrey’s Youth Fest. Stolen has playing together for two years. The band won this year’s Tweedy Idol talent contest at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary. “That’s how we saw them,” Hoy says. Cloverdale’s DJ Khush has been DJing professionally for three years, and is influenced by a wide genre of music, from HipHop and R&B to classic rock, metal, pop, jazz and electronica. Deth Klown (dethklown.com) is an electronic dance music DJ group, also from Cloverdale, founded by Caron Hoy and Austin Neighbour. Hoy, who’s been performing for 10 years, has won awards for his jazz drumming, and became an electronic artist in 2011. Deth Klown will be playing some of
their original songs at the youth stage. “We do our own light shows to the music,” he adds. “We have the experience. We’ve done tons of shows.” Admission to both the Youth Stage (all ages) and Teen Night Club (ages 13 to 18 only) is free with gate admission to the Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair. Weather-wise, Hoy believes the Youth Stage and Teen Night Club are less vulnerable to any inclement meteorological conditions during weekend. In other words, if it rains, no problem. “It’s indoors. It’s somewhere you can go no matter what.” Besides, Hoy figures: “If the girls are there, everyone else will follow.”

Local woman attacked in her basement suite By Jennifer Lang Surrey RCMP issued a public appeal for help locating a suspect in a sexual assault that took place last week. Police say a 20-year-old woman was leaving her basement suite at about 10:30 a.m. May 2 when she was approached by an unknown male. He physically and sexually assaulted her inside her residence, in the 16600-block of 63B Avenue. She was able to fight off her attacker, who then fled the scene on foot. The victim was taken to
hospital and treated for minor injuries. A detailed description of the suspect was released Friday afternoon. He’s described as a Caucasian male in his late 20s to 30s, wearing jeans, a black hoodie, red baseball cap and muddy white sneakers. He is also described as thin, approximately 6 foot 2 inches tall, with long, curly, light brown hair that was greasy and dirty. The suspect had a thin face with a large nose, and yellow teeth with a gold filling on the
Extreme textiles You’ve heard the phrase, From farm to fork? Well, how about from wool to wear? On May 11, The Surrey Museum hosts its annual Sheep to Shawl competition, where four teams from Lower Mainland spinning and weaving groups will card, spin, ply and weave a shawl in just four hours. The teams start out with raw, washed sheep’s wool, and take it from there. Sheep to Shawl – or Sheep to Coat – is a traditional contest carried out in many sheep-producing countries throughout the world. Teams prepare in advance, practicing their craft and studying the type of fleece they’ll use. This year, it’s from a polypay sheep, a white, medium-sized sheep. The Surrey Museum’s annual event celebrates the skills involved in making clothing and textiles the old-fashioned way, through spinning, weaving and sheep shearing. There’s a traditional sheep shearing
bottom left. There was a large scar over his left eyebrow. Surrey RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet called the daylight assault an isolated incident. “We are releasing this information in an attempt to further advance our investigation and locate the suspect,” he said. “Any information regarding this case could be extremely useful to our investigators.” Anyone with information is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers, at 1-800-222-TIPS.
demonstration from 1-2:30 p.m. Visitors can also try their hand at the museum’s spinning wheels and looms, with help from experienced staff and volunteers. Folk singers will be performing, creating an authentic atmosphere with traditional sheep and wool songs. The competition runs from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with winners announced at 4 p.m. Admission is by donation. Museum gallery admission is sponsored in 2013 by the Friends of the Surrey Museum and Archives Society. The Surrey Museum is located at 17710 56A Avenue, Surrey. It’s open Tuesdays to Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m to 5 p.m. For more, visit www.surrey.ca/heritage, or call 604-592-6956.

They got married in a galaxy far, far away By Jennifer Lang Darth Vader, Chewie, Obi Wan and a host of Jedi Knights were among those gathered for a Star Wars themed wedding in Sullivan over the weekend. The bride Janice – dressed as Princess Leia, complete with the signature hairdoo – and her groom Chris, decked out as an Imperial Storm Trooper – tied the knot (or perhaps we should say locked light sabres?) on May 4, also known as Star Wars Day by a growing legion of fans because the date sounds like the famous quote from the movie, “May the Force Be With You.” “We opened the ceremony with a variation of the line, ‘Aren’t you a little short for a Storm Trooper?” says Chris, who replied to his bride, “I’m Chris Bold! I’m here to marry you!” In their wedding vows, the bride and groom promised to love, honour and protect one another from the Dark Side, according to Jordan Bateman, AKA Obi Wan Kenobi, who officiated, by the authority invested in him by the Rebel Alli-

Truck museum revving up for visitors It’s been a year since a vintage truck collection returned to Cloverdale, where its new home is finally set to open By Jennifer Lang Cloverdale’s newest heritage attraction is set to open its doors to the public for the first time during Rodeo weekend. But first, the B.C. Vintage Truck Museum is holding a sneak preview for sponsors this coming Saturday, a celebration that’s happening more than a year after the collection returned to Cloverdale. The volunteer-run venture has been a labour of love for members of the Surrey Heritage Society, says president Paul Orazietti. The society acquired the collection of vintage trucks and related memorabilia from the Teamsters Freight Transportation Museum and Archives Society. The collection so far consists of 18 medium-sized freight vehicles. Fourteen are completely restored. They range from a 1912 Shell tanker and a 1931 Maple Leaf Flatbed to a 1977 BC Tel service truck. Many of the vehicles are from the Bob King collection, a colourful trucking company owner whose wife eventually donated them to B.C. premier W.A.C. Bennett. Many were at the B.C. Transportation Museum in Cloverdale, which was closed down by the provincial government in the early 1990s. The trucks and associated hardware were relocated one and two at a time from their former home in Port Coquitlam last spring. Their arrival sparked a flood of volunteers – enthusiasts eager to share their expertise by restoring and preserving these important relics of B.C.’s proud transportation history. Donors have played an important role, too, stepping in to complete necessary renovations in the museum space. “This thing has taken on a life of its own,” Orazietti said. The City of Surrey agreed to let the society house the trucks in a building at 176 Street and 60 Avenue, the former home of the Surrey Museum, and next door to the Cloverdale Fairgrounds, playing host to tens of thousands of visitors over the May long weekend during the Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair.
It’s having a soft launch on May 11, when dignitaries, supporters and guests are invited for a tour, but opens to the public May 17 to 20. Orazietti says after that, the society hopes to open the museum on weekends, and offer tours by appointment to car clubs. The museum and its collection of colourful, distinctivelooking pre-1950 trucks and freight vehicles will be making its presence felt out in the community as well during Rodeo Week, with several of the restored trucks appearing at the Cloverdale Bed Races May 16, the Chili Cook-off May 17, and Cloverdale Rodeo Parade May 18.
“This thing has taken on a life of its own.” - Paul Orazietti, Surrey Heritage Society

Brian Busby, left, and Denis Corrin, pictured last summer, were among the volunteers helping out at the new vintage truck museum. Corrin is now museum manager.
Since the move, there’s been a number of name changes for the attraction, and the Surrey Heritage Society’s finally settled on the B.C. Vintage Truck Museum.
Among the treasures acting as vehicular ambassadors here and further afield? The museum’s 1946 three-ton tractor that a trailer that will act as a stage for live performers. The following weekend, a couple of the trucks will venture out to the Hyack Festival parade in New Westminster. Meanwhile, the museum’s website, BCvintagetruckmuseum.org, is nearly ready. And Orazietti said plans are in place so visitors will take self-guided tours using smartphones and QR codes. Surrey is by far a major trucking centre of B.C., a role that’s only growing, says Orazietti, who adds the society envisions a museum that preserves and shares the history of Surrey, and “the broader transportation history of B.C.” Orazietti said about a dozen volunteers have been working to get the museum ready for the public, whether it’s been working through stacks of necessary paperwork or working on the vehicles themselves. “It’s an amazing feat,” he says.
