Community Pickleball fever Volunteers needed for Starbelly Jam Music Festival Grand Forks briefs Pickleball is highly infectious but while it’s not life- threatening, this feverous racquet sport is grasping hold of thousands of people across the country. “Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in North America,” said Wayne Hall, a Grand Forks senior who got hooked on the sport four years ago. The rules of the game combine elements of badminton, tennis and pingpong. School District 51 looking to trim staff by three in 2013/14 In order to address a budget shortfall and a declining number of full-time students, School District 51 (SD51) is proposing
to cut three teachers from its payroll in 2013/14. On April 30, SD51 held its public finance meeting to discuss some of the regions financial pressures and propose some changes to the school district’s board of directors.
Submitted Crawford Bay’s Starbelly Jam Music Festival (July 19 to 21) is just around the corner and we are look-
ing for volunteers to help put together the best family festival around. In exchange for your presence and hard (fun) work you
will receive a weekend pass for 10 hours of volunteer time. If you just want to come one day, five hours of volunteer
time is only required. To apply for a position please visit the Starbelly website at starbellyjam.org and click on Volunteer to
fill out a quick application so we can best place you. Be part of the magic that makes this festival happen.

One in three Canadian kids is left on the side of the rink Submitted With local files from WKA Staff
In Canada, one in three families cannot afford to enrol their children in organized sport or recreation
activities because of financial barriers (Vision Critical 2011). Six years ago, Marlee Stein wanted to learn to skate but she didn’t think it would be possible coming
from a family of four kids and facing the struggles of a parent battling illness. Through a family support service in her community, Marlee and her family were
introduced to Canadian Tire Jumpstart. The Jumpstart program supported Marlee’s skating lessons and skate Canada membership through financial assistance.

Dine for a minimum of $10 and get a mystery gaming chip worth $5 to $50 in FREE slot play. After dining, take this coupon and your dinner receipt to Guest Services to receive your mystery gaming chip.
Marlee decided to turn her desire to skate into a goal...to oneday join the Canadian Olympic Figure Skating team. Through Jumpstart, Marlee is able to continue her skating lessons and is working to achieve this dream. “Jumpstart helped me get the lessons I needed to enter some very challenging provincial and national figure skating competitions in Canada,” said Marlee Stein. “With all the lessons I have taken, I hope it opens up opportunities to eventually become a part of the Canadian Olympic team.” “The benefits of kids participating in sports affects their entire lives,” said Johnny Misley, President, Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities. “Jumpstart is dedicated to removing barriers so financially disadvantaged children can simply participate, and ultimately pursue their dreams.” Kids able to participate in organized
sport and recreation, outside school hours, gain many benefits including increased self esteem, greater self confidence, leadership skills, and better grades. In Castlegar, the number of kids who have had access to organized sports due to the success of Jumpstart, continues to grow. “Our totals, up until the end of December, are 680 kids,” said Kerry Saari, Castlegar coordinator. “There’s actually more than that because we have community partners like Twin Rivers’ 360 Degree Program and we’ve been a partner with the Blueberry Creek Community School. We’re pretty pleased with how we’ve helped children in the area.” Saari said they are still putting together plans for this year’s Jumpstart celebrations but expects another great turnout. Despite the financial hardships many Canadian families
face, there is a way to get kids into the game, no matter what barrier. By covering the cost of registration, equipment and/or transportation, Canadian Tire Jumpstart has helped 570,000 (and counting) children like Marlee participate in the sport of their choice. Help kids from your community by visiting Canadian Tire, Sport Chek, Atmosphere, Mark’s and Canadian Tire Gas+ stores as well as Pita Pit locations throughout the month of May to donate $2 in exchange for a red ball, with 100 per cent of all donations going to help kids play. The May campaign will be celebrated on Jumpstart Day on Saturday, May 25, with fun activities taking place at participating Canadian Tire Retail stores across the country, including charity barbecue’s or GoClean waterless car washes. Visit jumpstart.canadiantire.ca to learn more.

Sports Kannibelles feast at Spokane Derby Tourney submitted
The West Kootenay Roller Derby (WKRD) all-star team, the Kootenay Kannibelles, returned victorious and undefeated from the Spokarnage tournament at the end of April.
T.Mo Jam File photo
The 20 team, three day tournament hosted by Spokane’s Spokannibals featured seven teams from Canada including WKRD house teams, the Rossland/ Trail Roller Girls and the Dam City Rollers, along with 13 teams from the pacific northwest U.S. After a strong start with a 163-12 victory over the Ranier Roller Girls on Friday evening the sixth-seeded Kannibelles returned to the track Saturday for hard fought wins played in half length bouts against Canadian opposition, in the form of Fernie’s Avalanche City and Burnaby’s Anarchy Angels. Those two victories meant the ‘Belles missed the full length Saturday evening bouts and moved straight to the semi final the next day.
Sunday morning saw the bleachers at the Spokane Convention Centre packed as the Kannibelles took on the number one seeds and only other unbeaten team in the tournament, the Sockit Wenches from Seattle. Spurred on by the chants of “Hungry, hungry” from their WKRD leaguemates and supporters the ‘Belles ground out a 150-126 win in a physical and often heated battle. Having advanced to the final the Kannibelles waited for their opponents to be decided, only to face the Sockit Wenches again. Once again the Kannibelles took down their higher-ranked opponents 202-118 to take the tournament along with the $700 first prize. Kannibelles coach, Phil Yer Pants, said it was beyond what the team had expected going into the tournament. “We entered Spokarnage expecting to be competitive but our main focus was to use the tournament as an opportunity to grow as a team and build towards the Canadian western championships in July.” Pants added “The whole team skated so strongly all weekend and to come away undefeated and with so many new fans and friends was amazing.” If you want to see the Kannibelles for yourself they’re next bout will be in Castle-
gar on June 1, as they entertain the Spokan-

Tenth in a series on West Kootenay-Boundary place names. Balfour, at the outlet of Kootenay Lake, was named in 1890 by surveyor Charles Westly Busk, who staked a pre-emption claim there a year prior.
In 1895, during a visit to the area, Lady Aberdeen wrote in her diary: “Opposite Pilot Bay a gentleman of the name of Balfour has built a private residence just because of the beauty of the place. And he is fully justified.” A copy of the 1892 West Kootenay tax roll held by the Kootenay Lake archives

The Balfour Beach Inn is the community’s most historic building. Greg Nesteroff
The earliest reference to the townsite was in Revelstoke’s Kootenay Star on August 2 that year: “Another town has been started on Kootenay Lake at Busk’s Point and lots are for sale.” (When Busk surveyed the townsite in May 1891, he immodestly named three streets Charles, Westly, and Busk — Charles and Busk are still on the map.) The first actual mention of Balfour was in the Nelson Miner of September 13: “No better view of Kootenay Lake and river (or outlet) can be had than at Busk’s point ... This available piece of ground has been platted for a townsite and given the name of Balfour, in honor of the man who rules Ireland through a secretaryship in Lord Salisbury’s cabinet.” Although this conclusively establishes the town was named for Arthur James Balfour (1848-1930), who served as prime minister of Great Britain from 190205 (and therefore the pronounciation is BALfir, not BalFORE), it didn’t prevent several rival theories from emerging.
In 1969, G.P.V. and Helen Akrigg received a letter from Nelson’s librarian, Mrs. G.M. Stockell, who stated: “It is not named after the British Lord Balfour, but after a man who worked on the CPR.” In their book, Brit-

LV Rogers students get forest fire fighting experience Nelson Staff West Kootenay Advertiser
An L.V. Rogers teacher brought her experience fighting forest fires to the Nelson school last Thursday. Claire Hewson has spent the past five summers working for the Ministry of Forests as a wild land forest fire fighter on the Valhalla Unit Crew based out of Shoreacres.
“I am passionate about forest fire fighting and I wanted to spread awareness to the students who will soon be in the workforce,” says Hewson. “It is a great job that promotes learning and good work ethic.” Held at LVR on May 2, students were greeted in the gym by Smokey the Bear and forest fire fighters from the Arrow Zone and Kootenay Lake Zone.
Forest fire fighting intro last week. Submitted
Students watched a presentation of pho-
tos and videos which taught them about the job requirements, job tasks, different types of crews, different types of deployments, and the overall structure of Ministry Forest Fire Fighting. “I wanted to create awareness of the forestry and forest fire fighting culture that is so prominent in the Kootenays,” says Hewson. Moving outside for the majority of the
day, students rotated through four stations: Digging Guard, Pump Hose Fit Test, Chainsaw and Tools, and Initial Attack Water Delivery. In the digging guard station students used pulaskis to dig a hang guard which will later be used as a running trail for the students of LVR. In the pump hose fit test students ran the standardized fit test. This included
carrying pumps, rolled hose and a charged hose. “They needed to complete this in four minutes and 10 seconds,” says Hewson. “I am happy to say that every student who tried passed the test.” There was also an engraved plaque given to the top male and female pump hose time. In the chainsaw and tools station, students saw a demonstration
of chainsaw skills, including bucking and falling. Students got to see all the tools that were used including rakes, P.P.E, and drip torches. They also learned about safe working distances and safety on the fire line. In the initial attack station students learned how to start and troubleshoot a Mark III pump and a Shindaiwa pump...

News Canada Post poised to open private franchise Since 2006, Canadians have sent one billion fewer letters. With this statistic in mind, Canada Post is looking for less expensive ways to service its customers. And it may come at a cost to local postal workers. In February, Canada Post issued a letter of notification to CUPW (Canadian Union of Postal Workers) Local 842, citing its intent
to open a privately owned postal franchise in downtown Trail. “Basically Canada Post has put us on notice that a private franchise office will be opened,” said Ed Evans, CUPW Local 842 president for Trail and Rossland. “This means it will be independently owned with nonunion personnel working there.” In an interview with the Trail Times on Thursday, Anick
Kalawsky Chevrolet Buick GMC is pleased to announce that Vito Iacullo is the recipient of the General Motors Sales Marketing Guild Bronze Award for distinctive achievement in automotive sales.
Vito
Vito has professionally paired customers with their ideal vehicle for more than six years. He exemplifies our belief of doing everything we can on behalf of the customer and then a little bit more. Additionally, customers genuinely appreciate his relaxed, easy-going style when gathering the information they need to make an informed car-buying decision. Please join us in congratulating Vito on this important achievement. If you’d like to learn more about what such an award involves or would like to experience it firsthand, then we encourage you to reach Vito at (250) 365-2155 or by email at vito@kalawsky.com.

Losier, media relations, said that Canada Post is undergoing some significant changes because people are not using mail the same way they used to. “When we look at Trail, we do have a corporate post office which serves our customers well and we want that to continue,” she said. “I understand the union’s concerns, but our business has changed dramatically.” PLEASE READ THE FINE PRINT: Offers valid until May 31, 2013. Greetings from the USCC Union of Youth Council. This coming May long weekend marks the 66th year of our annual USCC Union of Youth Festival. The USCC Union of Youth Council would like to extend a warm invitation to our greater community to come and join us as we celebrate culture, food, talent, and heritage. This year also marks the 70th anniversary of our Iskra publication, and it seemed only fitting to us to honour this occasion with the inspirational theme: “The Spark Within.”

Outlet Reflections, historian Michael Cone states Lord Balfour’s family “had interests in mining claims in the area.” The Balfour post office opened on July 1, 1891. According to the Nelson Tribune of October 12, 1893, it was threatened with closure when postmaster Busk planned to winter in Victoria, but evidently some arrangement was made to keep it going. The BC Geographic Names system says the post office closed on February 12, 1955 and re-opened sometime in 1956. However, postal authorities later claimed it hadn’t actually closed, just been shut “for an extended period of time” during a move. Balfour has subsumed two suburbs, Fraser’s Landing and Riverside, each of which will be dealt with separately in this series. A nt h r o p o l o g i s t Verne Ray recorded a Sinixt name, ktca’ukul, for a spring village at or near Balfour, which he translated as “spliced trousers.”

Horoscope Michael O’Connor
for the
Week
May 10, 2013
Tip of the Week: This Solar Eclipse in Taurus is special because it hosts a Lunar Eclipse on either side. This is not an entirely rare event, but one that merits some special attention. Eclipses are like super charged New and Full Moons. They synchronize with larger scale changes than the usual Lunation Cycle. The whole picture of this ‘Annular’ Solar Eclipse offers an interesting and complex seed theme. (An Annular Eclipse does not simply imply that it occurs annually. It means that while the Moon does exactly cross over the Sun, its distance is further away from earth than during a Total Solar Eclipse thus producing a neat effect of a black disc with an orange ring around it.) So, the Sun/Moon conjunction occurs in Taurus, and since Venus rules Taurus and it is in Gemini where Jupiter is as well, this lends a positive perk to the picture. Jupiter and Venus are two of the brightest lights in the sky and popularly referred to as ‘lucky stars’. However, Mercury is also in Taurus in close alignment with the Sun and Moon forming an aspect called ‘combust’ which suggests that perceptions are ‘blinded in the light’. This tends to produce strong, subjective opinions. The fact that Mars is also in Taurus and in close alignment with Mercury suggests that these opinions will be stubbornly asserted. The Gemini factor suggests that this will produce a lot of news, communication exchanges and gossip. Thanks to the internet, we live in a time of unprecedented exchanges of ideas, perceptions and opinions so it could get ‘drowned out’. But if it was actually graphed it would reveal a spike lasting 3-4 weeks. The changes that eclipses activate, however, last a lifetime. Tune-in and cooperate with this sharp cycle of change.

Planting season has arrived! The seeds may be literal or they may be that of plans, goals and dreams of all sorts. Since so much variety is spicing-up your life these days, your garden likely has many features. Yet, the changes you are undergoing are truly metamorphic. Cooperating so that you gain from it makes good sense.
What makes sense to you now, in the bigger picture of you plans? While common sense has its place, what you specifically want now is good sense. Your aim includes distinction, a unique feather in your cap. So what will give you that niche edge or solution? The spotlight is on you. Take charge yet keep your eyes and ears open.
Concerted efforts to establish a more secure foundation asks that you replace at least some features of existing ones. This is probably happening anyway. These are prompting you to take risks, to step faithfully into the unknown. Some promising seeds are germinating, yet there may be some delays. Exercise patience and point your imagination positively.
The future beckons and it includes a more stimulated social life. Whether at work or at school, new mates are entering your stage. The flow of change now implies creative investments. Feeling more confident about the future may not be a luxury you feel just now. Avoid over analysis but do keep a philosophical perspective.
Opportunities present in your career and public life are very likely now. Yet as ever it is important that you take a strategic and realistic approach. This includes having a plan backed by an inspiring vision of the future. This will include consciously and deliberately overcoming silent fears. Share your dreams with trusted allies for support.
You are in a scouting mood. This means gaining a vantage to see far and wide. You want to nip the realities of current change in the bud so they don’t bite you in the butt! The time is right to make some expansive moves in your career. Yet, while taking a few risks is implied keep them sober and calculated.

Taurus is the sign of talents and, resources, money, possessions and priorities. What is important and valuable generally boils down to needs over wants. Yet, having a healthy balance of the two is a key to happiness. Balance is the keyword and it pertains to the quantity and quality of input related to return. Such weighing is on your mind.
Making key investment for the sake of greater satisfaction in your relationship exchanges is now in focus. Both your personal and professional life is likely to be affected. Since some measure of compromise is likely, deciphering what to give in order to receive is the question. Commitment earns long-term results. Yet, to whom and/or what do you feel so devoted?
A daily routine of discipline in terms of health goes a long way and the opposite is true regarding lack. The word, ‘discipline’ can seem so limiting, so incarcerating and heavy. Yet, those are precisely the results of a lack of it! Many of the rules of religion are linked to health: don’t drink coffee, or alcohol or eat pork.... Good health is its own religion.
Wow, a Solar Eclipse in earthy Taurus with Mercury and Mars there too. And you, an earthy Capricorn; how will you harness its gifts? Perhaps you simply need to play more and invite more pleasure into your life. A creative impulse is indicated for you yet requires that you be willing to break through old habits.
Shifts close to home often bring change in our public life and the opposite is true too. You feel determined to establish new foundations for future dreams. Perhaps you are building your esteem and confidence levels, or adding to your level of education or maybe the changes are physical, in your body or literally in your home. Build it!
An invitation to new perspectives has been sent to you. These may be as simple as a new coat of paint. Yet, it is likely that they are extending to you career and social sphere. A mix of courage, vision and rebellion is the recipe to break free of the usual trance. A will to try new twists, angles and approaches will bring rewards.

Sports Strong showings by young local golfers
SUBMITTED
This past weekend saw some very entertaining golf by a number of our juniors. On Saturday in Nelson we had a few players play the circuit for the first time this year. Emily Ashton, from Castlegar, played in her first ever junior circuit and did very well in the nine hole division.
Emily Ashton from Castlegar played in her first-ever junior circuit and did very well in the nine hole division. We also had Kyle Hall and Ben Kelsch from Granite Point and Ely Overennay from Castlegar play their first circuit events of the year. In the end it was Brenan Moroney defeating Tyler McKay on the first playoff hole.
Both kids birdied the par 5 18th hole to post identical rounds of 75. In the playoff Brenan had a two putt par to win the playoff. On Sunday at Christina Lake the roles were exactly reversed. Both Tyler and Brenan posted identical rounds of 74 in regulation and had to go to a playoff. This time the playoff went four holes, with Tyler making a birdie on the par 5, fourth hole to win. There were 16 forest fire fighters from the Kootenay area who helped run the stations. “I am pleased to say that many students showed interest in pursuing forest fire fighting in the future and I think that L.V. Rogers has many potential candidates,” says Hewson. “It seems to attract like-minded adventurous people. The people I have met through forest fire fighting have become a second family to me.”

Tuesday ladies’ golf league has kicked off at Christina Lake SUBMITTED West Kootenay Advertiser
The golf course at Christina Lake has opened and the Tuesday ladies’ league has begun.
League opening action, held Tuesday, April 9 at the scenic links had 20 ladies take part in an 18hole scramble. The winning team consisted of Paz Al-
guire, Heather Peterson, Michelle Boyd and Barb Bannert, who scored 77. The following week, an 18-hole “peers” game was played, based on golf
handicaps. The winners were Alguire (first flight), Peterson (second flight) and Joan Bartlett (third flight). On April 23, the ladies played a “Re-
versed Dice Game,” with nine holes followed by lunch and a general meeting. The winners on this occasion were Cathy Manson, Alguire, Joie Lavalley
and Val Horkoff. On April 30, amidst the cold, stormy weather, 27 ladies played 18 holes of the game “Mutt & Jeff.” Arlette Dun-
bar (first flight), Val Cairns (second flight) and Ina Good (third flight) were the winners of that contest.
