Merritt to host Sturgis rally and concert in July By Emily Wessel THE HERALD

reporter@merrittherald.com

The third annual Sturgis North motorcycle and music festival will be held at the Merritt Mountainfest grounds just outside the city limits, organizers announced on the event’s website Tuesday. The festival, which runs from Aug. 22 to 25, is on its third location in three years. It’s inaugural event was

held in Salmon Arm in 2011, and in 2012 it was moved to the Motoplex Speedway in Vernon. The festival comes to Merritt after negotiations with a site in Chase fell through, but Sturgis North President Joan Hansen said the Mountainfest grounds have three key qualities the other locations were missing. “Merritt’s got infrastructure, it’s got camping, and it’s got the proximity to

Vancouver,” she said. “Our goal this year is to keep our costs down, our prices for the patrons down, and start getting some of our debts from previous years paid back.” Hansen said organizers are working with creditors from both Salmon Arm and Vernon on the event’s outstanding debts, which she said were largely unexpected.

Merritt RCMP didn’t have to go far to investigate a hit and run on May 6. “A 35 year-old male drove into the police station parking lot in Merritt fearing he was being chased by ‘bad guys’,” said Cst. Tracy Dunsmore in a press release. “After tearing the bumper off of one vehicle hoping to set off an alarm to get police attention, the male left the parking lot and then returned moments later and hit two other vehicles. Damage to the last vehicles was minimal.” The male also attempted to kick in

Mock accident a lesson for MSS students By Emily Wessel THE HERALD

reporter@merrittherald.com

About 50 spectators, including students from Merritt Secondary School, got a rude awakening on Tuesday when they saw Grade 10 student Emma Wesnoski lying on the ground and a wrecked car wrapped around a pole at lunch time. The scene was set up by Merritt RCMP officers with the help of MSS drama teacher Shanna Nelson. “We wanted to use our mock accident scene today as a venue to get the facts out to the kids about how a moment of misjudgment can impact their futures in some incredibly serious ways,” Nelson said. “Lots of kids really don’t understand how deeply an impaired driving charge — accident aside — will really follow them around for life.” Some of Nelson’s drama students were in on the mock accident, which was intended to illustrate the harmful effects of driving under the influence of drugs. Senior drama students played the driver and passengers who caused the accident, while other students sat within the accident scene acting distraught for the victim. Police mock interviewed the students after they were extracted from the car, with one officer announcing to the crowd that the driver would have faced a charge of impaired driving causing bodily harm. Members of the Merritt Fire Rescue Department were also on hand to pry the doors off of the

totalled car as members of the B.C. Ambulance Service loaded their pretend patient onto a stretcher and into an ambulance. A crowd of about 50 people gathered around the scene at the intersection of Wilson Street and Canford Avenue. After RCMP Const. Dave Fahlman announced that the scene was staged, each of the students in the car and Wesnoski announced statistics prepared by the department on drug use and driving. “Imagine the phone call my parents are going to receive,” Wesnoski said to the crowd, her face painted up with bruises and cuts as well as embedded gravel. Other students announced that onethird of drivers killed in crashes in Canada have drugs in their systems, and that driving within three hours of marijuana use nearly doubles a driver’s risk of having an accident. The vivid demonstration was the first one that Nelson said she’s co-ordinated, and the first in at least her three years of teaching at MSS.

2013 Merritt visitor’s guide on stands now The 2013 Merritt Official Visitor’s Guide is now on shelves, and the city’s former Economic Development Manager James Umpherson said the booklet is an improvement over last year’s guide. “We’ve enhanced it using some of the more unique characteristics of Merritt, such as First Nations culture, First Nations education, and development, so that was an added bonus for the city,” he said. “It adds one more dimension to the city that we think is attractive for visitors.” The 60-page guide features walking tour maps, suggested itineraries, and a plethora of information on events and things to do in Merritt. Umpherson said the guide’s imagery is more compelling and allows people to see what Merritt and the Nicola Valley looks like, so they have a feel for it coming in. “We’ve refreshed it, we’ve added some great imagery, and I think it’s a really wow guide,” Umpherson said. Umpherson said

the guide doesn’t just suit visitors, but by presenting the area’s amenities and attractions, could serve as a guide for families looking to relocate to the area. Some of the other improvements include information about surrounding areas, resorts, and other amenities outside of the city. He also said that the hope is people will hang on to the guide as a resource. The guide is available at various B.C. Visitor Centres, as well as locations around town.

Numbers go up to about 100 on those days, of course. This is just a good deal we’ve got with Quilchina Golf Course. They give us a good deal, that way we can make some money. If we make over $1,000, that’s three or four months worth of food.” The golf tournament featured 18 teams and 72 golfers. Following the golf, the golfers went into the clubhouse for

HERALD OPINION Of Harper, attack ads and councillor’s pay By Dale Bass

KAMLOOPS THIS WEEK

It’s another week where nothing really worked its way into a full column, but a lot of things happened that are worth some consideration or observation. • The first comes courtesy of a friend who asked why Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his band of frozen souls up in Ottawa are dissing the new leader of the federal Liberal Party of Canada. There’s no federal election, my friend observed, so what’s the problem? And why, he asked, are the ads attacking Justin Trudeau so lame? The answer is easy to identify, I told my friend. This generation of Trudeau the leader scares the heck out of Harper and his minions. Trudeau is not a fly to be swatted, but a bug that needs to be obliterated with a cannon. He’s that really dangerous political leader: Someone who might attract people who otherwise don’t give a damn to get off their duffs and vote simply because he appears to have real blood coursing through his veins, he’s not afraid to poke fun at himself and, in being that way, he brings a bit of hope back into a government level that sees us all as criminals, potential criminals or left-wing minority bleeding-hearts who believe in the rehabilitation of criminals. • Continuing with Harper — but not for much longer — please pay attention to the stealth-like way he has snuck in yet another of his secret objectives with legislation that would remove the arm’s-length distance the government now has from the CBC and give it a seat at the table. The bill would allow Harper and his cabinet to dictate working conditions at the national broadcaster, along with the International Development Research Centre, the Canada Council for the Arts and the National Arts Centre in Ottawa.

After tragedy, Merritt shows its good side CRAIG LINDSAY Off the Cuff We all breathed a sigh of relief when the couple from Idaho, the Ralstons, were able to find the bodies of the two Langley teens lost in Nicola Lake. Finding the bodies means closure for family and friends who have been through an ordeal which most of us can’t come close to imagining. Even though the boys and their families weren’t from Merritt or the Nicola

Valley, people here looked at them as their own. This city has its share of problems and quarrels that seem to be epic at the time. Much of the focus of local gossip, online chatter as well as media coverage, including our own, dwells on the negative. It takes a real tragedy for a town to pull together and realize how trivial a lot of our problems are. When news first came out in Merritt about the missing boys from Langley, people in the community stepped up. RCMP members put in long hours searching for the boys, as did many unpaid members of the Nicola Valley Search and Rescue. People were quick

to offer help to family and friends that came to town during the search. There have been several fundraisers locally to raise money to help the families, who have to pay their own money to hire the search crew from Idaho. When you think of all the lost work hours as family and friends took time off to travel to Merritt to help out and console the immediate family. The Merritt Secondary School graduating class donated $1,000 to the families. Grad council president Taylor Cox said it was the right thing to do. nity. Those are just some of the selfless acts that have taken place recently around Merritt. Relay reflections An event which also brings the community together and shows the good side of a community, is the annual Relay for Life. I was able to get out to the Merritt relay and take some pictures and take in some of the event. It was great to see a large number of young people participating in the event. tent to just sit back, Tolles is front and centre when it comes to fundraising and getting out and participating in the relay. She raised over $700 herself for the Canadian Cancer Society and her team raised an amazing $2,093. Her team consists of many of her friends as well as friend and relay co-ordinator Diane Van Hoof. Another team of youngsters was the Merritt Otters Swim Club. The Otters were out in force with a solid showing. The swimmers played the part as well with many sporting their swim suits and caps. With strong youth in the community like these youngsters, Merritt is in good shape.

Sturgis North rally Spring fashions on display Merritt-bound From Page 1 Hansen said the first year cost about $1.5 million more than organizers expected, which is what prompted the move to Vernon in the first place. “The true reason we left Salmon Arm was because of the cost of infrastructure. It was very expensive,” She said. “So, we chose a site that had infrastructure, which was the Motoplex in Vernon. The unfortunate thing about that is most people don’t want to do a festival on pavement. The motorcycle component was great, but the music side was not. People want to sit on grass, they want to have some atmosphere. We also had an issue with camping and we lost a lot of patrons because they couldn’t camp right beside the site in Vernon.” Hansen said organizers are hoping Merritt’s proximity to the coast will attract the weekend traveller crowd, and extra attendees coupled with lower costs will help them pay down their debts. She said the event is also looking at adding some country music acts and offering space for local charities

to fundraise at the event, although neither musical guests nor local charities are confirmed this early on in the planning. Unlike the local Great Canadian Bike Rally, Sturgis Creek is operated as a business, and Hansen said the charity component is all handled separately. “We don’t handle any charity money. With the money that comes in to us, we handle our end of things,” she said. “What we do is we allow the charities to come in and we provide the space, the tickets, and the venue for them to fundraise. That way, all the charity money goes to them.” City of Merritt Chief Administrative Officer Matt Noble said that although the event takes place in the Thompson-Nicola Regional District, the City of Merritt has been approached by the rally organizers for support. “Merritt is used as basically the rallying point or the landmark,” he said. “The city has no financial stake in this, but it’s definitely going to bring in more people. From that perspective, we’ll work with the organizers to make sure everything comes off in an orderly fashion.”

Bass on a number of election-related topics From Page 6 Those of us who see the glass filled by the federal government to be half-empty see this as nothing more than trying to control messages like the muzzling of scientists and massive cuts to the arts, among others. • Another friend sent a text earlier this week calling me to task for not yet pointing out each of the candidates running in the provincial election for KamloopsNorth Thompson lives

outside the riding. Ed Fehr, who for a short while was the B.C. Conservative Party candidate before health issues forced him to step aside, was the only one who lived in the riding. NDP candidate Kathy Kendall lives in Sahali, Liberal candidate Terry Lake calls downtown home and Ed Klopp, who replaced Fehr on the ticket, lives in the Shuswap. It’s not unusual for this to happen; years and years ago I was writing stories

about candidates being “parachuted” into ridings just because of their high profile and the belief name recognition would translate into victory. It’s not quite the same thing here and, while the Liberals obviously needed to go with their sitting MLA, you’d think the NDPers and Conservatives could have found someone to run who would actually have a vested interest in the riding. I wonder how hard they searched. • Finally, don’t get your

knickers in a knot over Coun. Nancy Bepple raising the issue of how much we pay her and the others on council. It’s not enough. Everything that actually affects us — roads, sewers, water, fire, transit, safety, economy — is impacted by the work they do and there’s no way it can be done on a piecemeal, parttime basis. We want them to be there to talk to us at rezoning hearings, at publicinput meetings, at open

houses, when we’re angry about the barking dog next door and want to complain. They deserve to be paid for the work they actually do and I hope her notice of motion gets beyond the simple comparative report she’s requested to a decision to deal with the problem. Maybe that might encourage some folks on the North Shore to put their names onto a ballot. Dale Bass is a reporter with Kamloops This Week.

Fracas outside business gets physical By Craig Lindsay THE HERALD

newsroom@merrittherald.com

A dispute between a local business owner and the City of Merritt’s bylaw enforcement officer has both sides talking about legal action. Vision Quest Optical and Gifts owner Harvey Keys presented the Merritt Herald with a four page document detailing his recent encounters with bylaw officer Bob Davis. Keys said that on April 9, Davis entered the store to complain about the store’s sandwich board signs. “One of my customers suggested to the bylaw officer that he show the people the bylaw in black and white and there could be no argument, said Keys. Keys said Davis responded by using profanity and telling

the customer and Keys, ‘it is not my job to show people the bylaws, you can go online and look at them yourself.’ Keys said he responded by removing the sandwich signs in question and turning them into tables. The following day, Davis returned to the store to take pictures of the new display tables, said Keys. Davis returned later that day along with Sean O’Flaherty, City of Merritt’s development services officer; Dave Tomkinson, Merritt Fire and Rescue chief; and the local building inspector. According to Keys, the city workers inspected the basement and then left without incident. After Davis left, Vision Quest employee Jeanine Gustafson locked the door behind him. “A few customers came to the door and

she let them in, he said. “One customer wanted to leave, so I unlocked the door for them. Keys said he tried to lock the door again but Davis grabbed his arm. In the ensuing scuffle, both ended up being injured. Keys hurt his shoulder and ended up going to the hospital to receive a shot for the pain and a sling for his arm. Davis was also injured in the encounter, although Keys sus-

pects he was faking. Keys has told the Herald he is talking with Legal Aid about a possible lawsuit. Davis told media sources, “I have no comment at this time because the issue may go before the courts. Matt Noble, City of Merritt Administration Officer, said, “Many of the events as explained by the complainants are in direct conflict with the statements of other witnesses. Mr Davis was injured and sought medical attention.

Coroner’s inquest into lake deaths underway By Craig Lindsay THE HERALD

newsroom@merrittherald.com

Although foul play is not suspected, a coroner’s inquest will be held into the deaths of the two Langley teens, Austin Kingsborough and Brendan Wilson, whose bodies were

recovered in Nicola Lake on Monday. “Nobody thought from the beginning, that this was anything more than a tragic accident, said coroner Barb McLintock. “The bodies were recovered yesterday (Monday). We had a coroner on the

scene. What we need to determine is the identity, which has been determined, and by what means they met their death. We want to put together the story as best we can. We also look at any reasonable or practical suggestions we could make that

ELECTION 2013

Tegart answers our questions Second of a two part series featuring the FraserNicola MLA candidates answering the Herald’s questions. Last week, we featured Harry Lali of the NDP and Michael Beauclair of the Liberals. John Kidder of the Green Party has not responded.

ELECTION 2013

Jackie Tegart, Liberals

What is your background? What experiences make you a good candidate? I was born in Princeton and have lived in Ashcroft for

Families appreciative From Page 8 Scott Lebus, family friend and spokesman for the families, said finding the bodies was a big relief for everyone involved. Lebus and many other family and friends were commuting between Merritt and Langley during the two week search. “The boys are home,” he said in a press release. “I want to thank all of Merritt for their love and support. The Ralstons (the search team from Idaho) arrived last night. This morning (Monday), I had the honour of being on the boat when they located both boys. The families are sad but there is a huge sense of relief. I personally feel the weight of the world has been lifted off me.”

over 50 years. I have served my community and the region as an elected school trustee for 17 years, 15 years as the board chair. During that time I also served on the B.C. School Trustees executive, including one year as president. I am currently in my third term as a municipal councillor for the Village of Ashcroft. My work experience included seven years as the self employment coordinator for Community Futures, helping people interested in starting up a small business. I worked in Community Development through B.C. Healthy Communities. I have also owned and operated The Painted Ladies Gallery and Gifts, with three partners. I believe I have the skills necessary to be a very effective voice in Victoria. What can be

done to bring jobs to the area and improve the economy? I believe we must continue to ensure a business environment in the province of B.C. that welcomes investment. Industry creates jobs. In order to support expansion of industry, we must ensure clear, transparent, consistent processes that are not changed on a whim. Fraser Nicola is a resource based riding, dependent upon forestry, mining and agriculture to support our communities. We need a government that supports growth, which in turn supports communities. Just one recent example in Fraser Nicola is Copper Mountain Mine in Princeton. What are your policies to improve rural healthcare? Both of these issues are critically important

in our rural communities. In speaking with constituents across the riding, healthcare is upper most in their minds. Despite the fact the healthcare budget continues to grow every year, more services are centralized into bigger centres. There are no easy answers to this issue. Government has heard the concerns of rural communities and have responded in a number of ways. The BC Liberals have provided incentive programs to attract doctors to rural communities. We have a doctor. shortage throughout the province, the government has increased the medical student spaces at universities. Continued commitment, $2.3 billion over the next three years, to long term care beds. We must continue to be a strong voice for healthcare in our communities.

REGIONAL NEWS

Busy spring in Logan Lake

By Barrie Ogden

CONTRIBUTOR TO THE HERALD

Last month, Logan Lake celebrated two special occasions. First, on Monday, April 22, the Logan Lake Arts Council hosted an event at the seniors centre to mark Arts and Culture Week, which is a provincial celebration. The occasion was marked with readings by Allan Thain, arts council president and professional actor; silk painting displays by Peggy King; and acrylic painting techniques

by Sheila Bliss. Acting Mayor Robin Smith was on hand to cut the arts council’s 30th anniversary cake, crafted and decorated by Ev Forbes. The great folks at the seniors’ centre made it possible for arts council members to display a variety of art forms. At the end of the day, the Arts and Culture Week celebration was deemed to have been very successful and well attended and it’s hoped the event will serve to attract new members to the

amazing assortment of artistic opportunities available in our community including quilting, multi-media art forms and pottery. The week wrapped up with a major community celebration when, for the second time in two months Lt.Gov. Judith Guichon returned to Logan Lake to participate, along with MP Dan Albas and a colour party from the Royal Canadian Legion (Merritt branch), in the official opening of Logan Lake’s cenotaph. The weather was chilly but the turn out of residents including students and teachers from both schools created a welcoming atmosphere for the special guests. In his remarks to

God

the Word, the World

By Herman Kneller

Whe Wh When n th tthe he R Romans omans d destroyed estro t ed the c city it brought an end to the Jewish country, worship, sacriÀces and the temple service, because this all pointed to Jesus. But, now that Jesus, the Lamb of God, had died, there was no more need of the temple service. The priests that did not believe in Jesus died in the wars. Some of the priests in the temple, had accepted Jesus through the preaching of the apostles and were now helping to spread the good news about Jesus, His death, resurrection, ascending to Heaven and the promise to come back again. The gospel had been primarily for God’s people, the Jews, but when Jesus went back to Heaven he instructed the apostles to start at Jerusalem then go into the entire world sharing the beautiful gospel. After Jesus went back to Heaven, there was a persecution against the church which scattered people everywhere, so they began preaching the gospel everywhere they went. The

apostle Thomas went as far as India, preaching to the people on the way. God gave these apostles the ability to talk to the people they met in their own languages. As people accepted Jesus on the way it caused problems. In one city, there were makers of big and little idols. People had bought and worshiped these idols but now business was suffering. They reported the Christians to the authorities saying that these people turned the whole world upside down and their businesses were suffering. Ultimately, the gospel was heard by average people, business people, and leaders. When the apostle Paul was in prison in Rome, he wrote letters to churches. To one he said, “All the saints salute you, chieÁy they that are of Caesar’s household.” The gospel was heard right to the top of the leadership in the country, even in the hard core city of Rome. That is what Jesus meant when he said go everywhere.

the crowd, Albas said: “The government of Canada and our citizens have, in many ways, attempted to repay the debt owed to our men and women in uniform – those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Though we may never truly repay them, it is important to always remember what they gave up so we may enjoy the freedoms we have today.” Maureen Dixon, past president of the Merritt Legion and poppy campaign chair, in her remarks offered: “It is so sad that we have to have these memorials in just about every community across Canada so that we can come and remember our fallen soldiers, so it is with great reverence that we thank the District of Logan Lake for choosing to build this memorial. Lest we forget. Lest we forget.” The laying of wreaths was followed by a barbecue lunch prepared and served by members of the Logan Lake Fire Department which helped to encourage people to visit, and acknowledge the sacrifice of lives so that we Canadians are able to enjoy the quality of life we’ve been given.

in for an emergency C-section before me, so I didn’t go in until about 11:30 p.m.,” she said. “By the time they got me ready, it was two minutes after 12 when David Jr. was born.” Geraldine said both she and her husband were surprised to find out they had not just the first baby born in Kamloops for 2013, but the whole province. “It was surprising,” she said. “It was really neat.” David Jr., who is the couple’s first child, is four months old now and is doing very well.

“He’s growing really fast,” she said. “I wish he would stay small. It’s been a learning experience for me being a first-time mom, but it’s been really amazing.” What makes Mother’s Day even more special for the Jameses is that the special day is also the couple’s first year anniversary. “We’ll probably go out somewhere for dinner,” she said. “We’ve got some gift certificates we got for the New Year’s baby. We haven’t been able to use them yet so maybe we’ll do that.”

Don’t Know What To Get Your

Super Mom

The most beautiful gift is your presence It’s a no-brainer that to show your mom how much you love her you could shower her with gifts: flowers, chocolates, a gift certificate for a spa, or a new book she’s been waiting to read. But if you really want to touch her heart, don’t forget to give a little of the most precious gift all: your time. All the finest gifts in the world could never replace your presence. You could invite her to have brunch at her favourite restaurant or spend some time with her preparing some home cooked meals to freeze. You could take her for a walk in the park where you used to go together when you were young, which is sure to evoke many happy memories for both of you. Leaf through old photo albums together or ask her to tell you about the happiest times of her life. Laughter and even a few tears will likely accompany the stories. Your mother may need help with work around her home. Take advantage of her special day to do some helpful chores. You could clean the outsides of windows or help her do a bit of spring cleaning.

PLANET HAIR & SPA Has Out of This World Gift Certificates FOR Hair / Tanning / Spa Treatments Manicures / Pedicures Clothing / Jewellery

No matter what your plans are for this May 12, be sure to spend some quality time with the person who raised you. In fact, why not make a resolution to set aside an entire day for your mom every year on Mother’s Day. She deserves it!

STRONG ECONOMY ~ SECURE TOMORROW

My commitment to you:

Coldwater Indian Band Chief Harold Aljam was the first patient for Dr. Gary McRae and the Stoyoma Dental Clinic staff after its opening reception on May 1. Emily Wessel/Herald

Stoyoma Dental Clinic taking patients The Stoyoma Dental Clinic at 1999 Voght St. had a busy launch on May 1 from 9 to 11 a.m., when the staff of dental hygenists and Dr. Gary McRae began treating patients. Employees said the launch was well-attended and secured nearly 400 new patients, and

that the patient load can accommodate hundreds more. The clinic is operated by Scw’exmx Community Health Services Society and is working with area bands on ways to bring patients from reserves into town for dental treatments.

Scw’exmx Community Health Services Society Executive Director Jim Adams said the society opened the practice because the organization saw a high number of people being turned away from dentists because of patient overload.

Crown corporations subject of Bill C-60 mandates currently are and will still be created independently by the Crown corporations.

This is the same criteria that ministries follow to ensure that there is responsible

management. Crown corporations have either received, or continue to receive

billions of taxpayer dollars every year and the shareholders are the Canadian public.

If a Crown corporation were to be run irresponsibly, it would be the taxpayer that

would ultimately foot the bill.

See ‘Treasury’ Page 23

DAN ALBAS View from the HILL Each week, I look forward to hearing from dozens, sometimes even hundreds, of different citizens on issues and concerns of importance to them. Although common issues may often parallel events in the media, others may be unique or related to an unreported matter that many citizens share a common interest with. One of the more recent concerns I have heard about involves the CBC. If you have been following some online sources, you may have heard of a diabolical plan where the government will secretly “take control” over the CBC and convert the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation into a political propaganda machine. Like most rumours, speculation and innuendo, there is generally some factual validity at the core of an issue that is often then stretched or otherwise exaggerated to the extent that what is really occurring is at odds with the allegations. In this case, these concerns relate to Bill C-60, the Economic Action Plan for 2013. Bill C-60 does not in any way compromise the journalistic independence of the CBC, nor does this bill enable the government of Canada to actively engage in the creative or political direction of the CBC. Let’s start by pointing out that this provision applies to all Crown corporations and does not unfairly single out the CBC. The provision requires each board of directors for these Crown corporations to have their labour mandate approved by the Treasury Board. These

NDP leader Adrian Dix has promised to repeal the remainder of Bill 29, the legislation that broke union contracts and allowed contracting out of health support services early in the BC Liberal term of government. Parts of that legislation were struck down in a 2007 ruling by the Supreme Court of Canada, and the government was forced to pay compensation and consult with unions before any further contracting out of services. In a pre-campaign interview with Guardian, the Hospital Employees’ Union magazine, Dix made no specific commitments. “We are going to need to improve and strengthen the public role if we are going to continue to provide a high level of service, given the federal cuts that are coming to health care in 2014-15,” Dix told the HEU publication. They’re not really cuts. After a string of six per cent increases,

the growth of health care transfers is capped at four per cent starting next year. After signing a series of “net zero” contracts with various public service unions in the past year, the BC Liberals tabled an election budget proposing to hold health spending growth to two per cent this year. In 2008, the BC Liberal government passed amendments to comply with the court ruling that collective bargaining rights are constitutionally protected. The ruling didn’t reverse pay cuts, but ordered payment of $80 million in compensation and retraining, and required negotiations before any further contracting out of health care jobs. Judy Darcy, then secretary-business manager of the HEU and now the NDP candidate in New Westminster, said at the time that the legislation allowed the government and the union to “move on and build some kind of a partnership.” Platform highlights: • The BC Liberals emphasize their legislative change to allow

How to make the perfect PURITY FEED cottage ownership pass

Co. Ltd

NICOLA VALLEY NEWS

www.purityfeed.com

In sports, a perfect pass is a thing of beauty. Your cottage is also a thing of beauty – a place for fun times with the people you love. But at some point, you will want to pass your cottage on to others, probably your adult children. To help you avoid potential obstacles like excessive taxation and maybe even some surprising opposition, here’s how to make the perfect cottage pass and ensure it will stay in the family for a long time to come. Don’t get blindsided Wayne Gretzky famously said that he skates to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been.

Make the easy pass Plan now to avoid excessive tax liabilities when you make the pass. Unless you’re passing assets to a spouse or common-law partner, when you die you’re deemed to have disposed of your capital assets at fair market value – meaning that if your cottage property has appreciated, your heirs could face a significant capital gains penalty. For a less taxing

Treasury Board oversight increases parity in public sector From Page 21 Given these challenging fiscal times, it would be irresponsible of government to not retain the ability to control costs that are shared by Canadian taxpayers as a result of public sector labour agreements. While some may favour the “blank cheque” approach with respect to Crown corporation labour agreements, it should also be pointed out that the vast majority of federal public sector workers are already subject to Treasury Board oversight and this legislation will provide greater parity within the public sector and will

also protect the interests of Canadian taxpayers. If you would like to read the actual text of the bill, please do not hesitate to give me a call or send an email. It will also be another busy week on Parliament Hill as debate continues on Bill S-209, An Act to Amend the Criminal Code; Bill C-60’s second reading along with private members’ bills S-213, Korean War Veterans Day Act; and others. pass, transfer the property to your kids while you are alive, either as an outright gift or by selling it to them at fair market value. (Selling for less can result in double taxation.) Spread out the capital gains triggered by the sale by making the payments over a five-year period and claiming the capital gains reserve, so that only 20 per cent of the capital gain is taxable in any one year. Alternatively, transfer the property as a trust, with your kids as beneficiaries. This transfer option will also trigger an immediate capital gain but future capital gains on the property will accrue to your children and are not payable until they sell the property. Insure your pass Cover cottage capital gains – and other estate debts – with permanent life insurance. The death benefits are usually taxfree and can provide an essential source of

cash to pay any taxes so your family won’t be forced to sell assets, such as your cottage. The perfect cottage pass should be an essential part of your overall financial and estate game plan. When you’re thinking about who to pass your cottage to, do you rely on what has been or do you consider what is going to happen? For instance, your adult children have always enjoyed the cottage – but will they in the future when you’re no longer around? Talk to your children now and if there are those who do not want ownership responsibilities, you can help avoid future family squabbles by ensuring they are treated fairly in your will.

HERALD HEALTH Eye exams see more than vision DR. CARRIE-LYNN SNEE The VIEWPOINT Most of us would consider the sense of sight to be important, yet we often take it for granted. As an optometrist, I strongly recommend regular eye exams, not only to check your vision, but also to ensure that your eyes are healthy. Many diseases can be detected through eye exams and I share the following example as a reminder to how important eye exams can be to your health and

well-being. A couple of years ago, L. presented for a full eye exam. She had been having sinus problems for around a month. She had been seeing her family doctor and a massage therapist, and had taken some antibiotics, but nothing was giving her relief from the pain around her nose and behind her right eye. Her vision was also blurry, so at this point she decided to come and have an eye exam. Upon examination, I discovered some abnormal eye findings. Her right pupil was mid-dilated, and while a small difference can exist between your pupils normally, a sudden onset of a difference can be of

of a third nerve palsy, and in L.’s case, a partial third nerve palsy. There are various causes for nerve palsies including vascular disorders (such as aneurysms and diabetes), trauma,

concern. Her right eyelid also had a mild ptosis (droopiness, in comparison to her left eye). She said that this had been present since she started having problems with her sinuses.

‘Through regular eye exams, we are able to detect changes in your eyes from diseases like diabetes and hypertension.’ — OPOTOMETRIST DR. CARRIE-LYNN SNEE multiple sclerosis, autoimmune disorders and tumours. I arranged a consult with an ophthalmologist. He ordered a CT scan, which revealed an aneurysm of the posterior communicating artery. This aneurysm

Lastly, during her prescription check, I found her to have a right hypophoria (eyes not aligning well). These results were unstable, leading me to believe that this was not a normal finding for her. Combined, these three things give a diagnosis

was putting pressure on her oculomotor nerve, causing her symptoms. She was quickly sent to Vancouver to have surgery to remove it. Afterwards, her ptosis, pupil dilation and muscle imbalance slowly resolved. Detecting aneurysms is by no means an everyday occurrence, but I share this with you simply to illustrate the importance of regular eye exams. Through regular eye exams, we are able to detect changes in your eyes from diseases like diabetes and hypertension, as well as monitor for eye diseases like glaucoma and macular degeneration. Eye exams can reveal so much more than just how well you can see.

Simple low back exercises DR. COLIN GAGE Spinal COLUMN As I am sure you have heard me say before, the best way to treat back pain is to prevent it in the first place. I am also sure you have heard me say that regular exercise and chiropractic treatment is an excellent way to achieve this! Although that may sound simple, no two back prob-

lems are exactly alike. Therefore, I have to recommend many different forms of exercise to many different people. This is due to the fact that every person has different needs, weaknesses and strengths. For example, a patient with severe arthritis of the knees or shoulders simply cannot do certain leg and shoulder exercises. I have listed a few very simple back exercises below. Even if you have mild to moderate arthritis in your spine, these conservative exercises will likely not irritate your back. If you are not sure or you feel discomfort/pain during the exercises, feel free

make an appointment. 1. Starting position: lie on your back on a table or firm surface with both knees bent, feet flat on the table. Action: cross your arms over your chest. Turn your head (trunk) to the right as you turn both knees to the left. Allow your knees to relax and go down without forcing. Hold for 15 seconds. Bring knees back up, head to centre. Reverse directions. Do each side five times. 2. Starting position: kneel down on the floor and assume the “allfours” position. Keep your head straight so that the gaze of your eyes is toward the floor. Action: slowly allow

your trunk to sag as far as you can so that your back is arched. Do not pull it down, but let it relax as you lift up your face towards the ceiling. Then round your back up at the waist as far as you can by contracting your lower abdominal muscles as you lower the top of your head toward the floor. All motion should be initiated from your lower back. Hold each of these positions for five to 10 seconds and repeat five times. 3. Starting position: kneel on a mat with your knees and ankles. Allow your buttocks to rest on your heels. Action: take your upper body over so you are

in a crouched position with your arms stretched out in front of you. Relax in this position and then slowly move forward with your elbows straight into a press-up position. Hold for 15 seconds and repeat five times. If you do at least these three exercises as described above each and every day, your low back joints will remain mobile and the muscles will stay flexible. If these exercises are combined with regular chiropractic care, the results are even more significant. If you feel any pain during these exercises, stop immediately and see your chiropractor.

UCL 17 doesn’t disappoint a huge Merritt audience By Ian Webster THE HERALD

sports@merrittherald.com

A standing-room-only crowd of over 1,100 fans and interested onlookers roared their approval as exciting MMA action returned to Merritt with UCL 17: King of the Valley on Saturday night at the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena. The weekend event came eight months after Kamiah, Idaho promoter Jesse Eller and his Unified Combat League staged a highly successful debut in B.C. and Canada with UCL 15 at the Merritt rodeo grounds on Sept. 8, 2012. Saturday night’s mixed martial arts card featured no fewer than 15 bouts. It highlighted a number of new and returning local combatants as well as fighters from Kamloops, Vernon, Chilliwack, Salmon Arm, Revelstoke, Lillooet and McBride. The first bout was almost an hour late in starting due to some unforeseen complications, Eller said. “We had a few things go wrong at the last second. There was some miscommunication with the medical people we had lined up, and there were a few issues surrounding the taping of the fighters’ hands. It had me running around in circles for a bit.” Once the glitches had been rectified and the lights were dimmed, it didn’t take long for the enthusiastic audience to warm up to the action in the cage. The second bout, between Chilliwack’s Josh Morgan and Nathan Hagan from Kamloops was a beauty. It went the full distance (three 3-minute rounds) with both fighters exerting every ounce of their energy before Morgan was given the nod in a narrow judge’s decision. Not long after, firsttime local scrapper Dustin Voght electri-

GREAT ACTION IN AND OUT OF THE CAGE (Above) Merritt’s Joe Aspinall lands a thundering left jab on the chin of Michael “The Polar Bear” Heppner in one of the many exciting bouts that took place at UCL 17: King of the Valley on Saturday night at the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena. (Top right) The sold-out event attracted UFC fighter Tim “The Thrashing Machine” Hague from Edmonton. A one-time elementary school teacher, Hague is also a former heavyweight champion of King of the Cage. (Right) Never Tap fight apparel founder Chris Mills poses with two of his company’s premiere card girls — Alisha Dander (left) and Angela Amici. Mills’ story is an inspirational one. Several years ago, a serious accident left the Vancouver resident without the ability to walk, talk, read or write. Doctors told Mills that he’d never regain the normal life he once had. His eventual recovery amazed people, and led to his MMA-themed clothing company. “The clothes say something about who I am,” Mills says. “The messages are about affirmation, positive outlooks and not letting life defeat you.” Ian Webster/Herald

fied the hometown crowd with a guillotine submission of fellow Merrittonian Justin Clark. Eller was suitably impressed. “You don’t usually see the guillotine pulled off in the heavyweight class. That was pretty amazing,” the promoter said. In the only female bout on the card, a game but overmatched Veronica Charters from Merritt came up short in her fight with Jessi Dalton out of Vernon. “Jessi is a very tough girl,” Eller said. “When she got Veronica down on the mat, it was pretty well over.” Eller went on to add, “I think Veronica has a good future in the sport. To do that well against someone as well-trained as Jessi is impressive.” The final bout of the undercard saw a spirited tilt between a pair of Merritt bantamweights,

‘The crowd went crazy.’ —UNIFIED COMBAT LEAGUE PROMOTOR JESSE ELLER

with Adam Bangsund prevailing over Les Bara. After a brief intermission, a six-pack of maincard fights lived up to their advanced billing. Ryan Stephens prevailed over Delton Mosley in another all-Merritt bout, while local favourite Devon Brown was edged out by Vernon’s Skyler Mobey. In a very technical contest that saw almost the entire bout fought at ground level, Revelstoke’s Derek Markus narrowly prevailed over Salmon Arm’s Marcus Blair. “We’re going to see both of those guys at the pro level at some point,” conceded Eller.

“It may have been their first fights, but both of them have years of training under their belts already.” The crowd was up and out of their seats for the final three bouts of the night, each featuring at least one local contestant. Merritt’s Joe Aspinall and Michael “Polar Bear” Heppner went “fist-to-toe” in their scrap with the former throwing bombs and the latter unleashing a devastating series of sidekicks. It was Heppner who was declared the winner, although not without some controversy. As the first round came to a close, Aspinall connected with a couple of hard rights, and the ref stepped in, motioning as if the fight was over. “It was an unfortunate mistake on the part of an excellent ref (Tony Williamson),” Eller

explained. “He started waving his arms above his head as if the bout was done, when really he was just trying to wave off the final few punches that were thrown because the round was over. It confused everybody. “I think that we’re going to do a rematch with these two guys [sometime in the future]. They both deserve to put the controversy behind them. Both are excited about it.” There was no debate

about the next bout’s outcome as Deven Nagata rebounded from a loss to Stephens in UCL 15 to defeat fellow Merrittonian Chris Alderson with a newlyacquired move. “It was a key lock or Americana,” Eller said. “Basically it’s a shoulder lock. Deven had just learned it and pulled it off.” Local favourite and MMA prospect Ty Edenoste closed out the evening with a powerhouse display. He picked

up his second UCL win in as many outings with a TKO of Cass Young from Kamloops. It was a devastating uppercut by Edenoste that put Young down and out on the mat, and whipped the audience into a final frenzy. “The crowd went crazy,” said Eller, who has grown to love Canadian MMA fans. Eller hopes to see his Unified Combat League back in Merritt once more this summer, probably in early to mid-July.

now live and work in Kamloops. Also playing for the Raiders was Jess Oldenburger, an Abbotsford native currently living in Merritt and working at the Merritt Veterinary Clinic. Nokleby and Oldenburger made big contributions on the scoreboard for the Raiders. The former ran in a pair of tries (10 points) while the latter was successful on a penalty kick and three conversions (9 points). “We came out strong and scored first,” Nokleby said. “[Nanaimo] didn’t end up breaking through our defence until there was only five minutes left in the first half. The score at the break was 24-5 for us.”

THE HERALD

The Kamloops Raiders women’s rugby squad can thank a quintet of players with connections to Merritt for their first-ever provincial Division One title on the weekend. The Raiders defeated the Nanaimo Hornets 34-10 at Vancouver’s famed Brockton Oval on Saturday to cap off an undefeated season and win the Karen Moore Cup, symbolic of BC Rugby Union Division One supremacy. Wearing the Raiders’ colors in the showdown with the Hornets were four former Merritt Secondary School Panthers — Emily Young, Cara Lamont, Carla Twan and Kalea Nokleby — all of whom

The second half was much more closely contested, but the Raiders were not to be denied. “We’ve had some great seasons, and been to the final a few times now, but this is the first time that we’ve finally won the title,” said Kamloops captain Kelsey Winter. “It’s just so great for our club to have an undefeated season (8-0).” While Nokleby, Lamont, Twan and Young are all products of former MSS head coach Sue Kabatoff ’s legendary rugby program a few years back, Oldenburger didn’t start playing the sport until after she had graduated from high school. “I went to Yale Secondary [in Abbotsford] and they didn’t have a girls’ rugby

team. I grew up playing soccer instead,” Oldenburger said. “I had always wanted to play the sport, so as soon as I graduated, I started playing club rugby.” When Oldenburger moved to Kamloops to attend Thompson Rivers University, she joined the Raiders. “This is my fifth season with Kamloops,” she said. “Against Nanaimo on the weekend, we played the best game we’ve ever played as a team. The whole season, our backs really shone. This game, it was equally the forwards and the backs. It was awesome.” Nokleby has been selected the Raiders’ Forward of the Year, while Young was chosen Back of the Year.

Sixteen-year-old Karlie Sloan from Merritt helped lead her Kamloops Jr. Wolfpack U16 girls volleyball team to a Division 2 provincial title in Abbotsford on the weekend. Playing at the Tradex exhibition facility in the Fraser Valley, the Jr. Wolfpack defeated Focus out of Vancouver 2-1 in an exciting three-set final on Sunday. “We were all pretty nervous in the final,” Sloan said. “There was live-streaming of the

match, and even playby-play commentating.” The Jr. Wolfpack lost the opening set against Focus but rebounded to take the second one, setting up a third-anddeciding set for the championship title. “We were down 8-6 at the break, but a huge stuff block after the change of sides really got us on a roll,” Sloan said. “We were just high on life, and went on to win the final set 15-12.” The Jr. Wolfpack earned the right to play in the gold medal game thanks to a 3-0 record in pool play, and playoff wins over Seaside and Vernon. The latter

victory was especially sweet, said Sloan. “We had played the [Vernon] Vengeance four times before the provincials, and each team had won twice. They are arch-rivals of ours. To beat them 2-0 in the semi-finals was pretty special.” Sloan’s volleyball season is far from finished. The Jr. Wolfpack will attend Nationals in Calgary from May 18-20. The younger sister of PGA professional golfer Roger Sloan, Karlie also plans to attend the Baden Cup competition and try out for Team B.C.
