Taking Action on Water Quality Teck operates five steelmaking coal mines in the Elk Valley of British Columbia which employ over 4,000 people. We raise our families in the valley, fish and swim in the river and care deeply about the environment. That’s why we’re taking action to ensure that water quality is protected in the valley now and for generations to come. We are working with governments, First Nations and communities to develop an Elk Valley Water Quality Plan that will maintain the health of the watershed. Best described as a number crossword, the task in Kakuro is to fill all of the empty squares, using numbers 1 to 9, so the sum of each horizontal block equals the number to its left, and the sum of each vertical block equals the number on its top. No number may be used in the same block more than once.

College of the Rockies’ expanded south entrance, completed in 2010, has achieved certification by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification program. LEED certification indicates the new construction meets the highest environmental performance criteria in Canada. LEED is an internationally accepted standard for the design, construction and opera-
tion of green buildings. The Canadian rating system is adapted from the US Green Building Council’s LEED Green Building Rating system with adjustments for Canadian climates, construction practices and regulations. LEED Canada Rating Systems are promoted by the Canada Green Building Council as a means to encourage and facilitate the development of sustainable buildings. The certification process includes a pointbased system covering
natural beauty demonstrating their commitment to protecting that environment through sustainable building.” College of the Rockies’ Facilities Manager Allan Knibbs says, “This project is an example of the College’s commitment to sustainable business practices. Using green building practices for the expansion has many benefits including lower operating and energy costs, a healthier environment, production of less waste, lower water usage and reduction of our carbon footprint. We are very proud to have achieved this internationally recognized in-

Following an independent review of these design areas, College of the Rockies’ expansion received a total point score sufficient to qualify for LEED certification. “I would like to congratulate College of the Rockies on their LEED certification,” says Thomas Mueller, President and CEO of the Canada Green Building Council. “It is great to see an educational institution that is surrounded by some of Canada’s most amazing

Gwyn Morgan concerned voters will disregard Liberal advances on economy ing rises. There is truth to the adage, “Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it”. The NDP came to power in 1991 and governed the rest of that decade. Investment dried up and economic growth trailed the rest of Canada. A low point came when the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce thanked the BC govern-
ment for driving growth investment in Alberta. Glenn Clark’s 19961999 tenure was arguably the most disastrous for BC and with Adrian Dix, Premier Clark’s former Chief of staff leading the province, I’d be very worried about history repeating itself. It took many years for the Liberals to repair the damage. During their
time in government, North America suffered through a major recession and yet we now have a triple-A credit rating, higher than the US government, allowing BC taxpayers the lowest possible interest rates Have the Liberals done everything right? Certainly not. The introduction of the HST by the Campbell gov-
ernment was badly handled. There have been other gaffes and ill thought out policies. And while there is a natural inclination for people to vote to change long governing parties, it’s important not to let the NDP sleepwalk to victory without thinking about which party is likely to create jobs and not burden today’s young people with a
mountain of debt. I’m not asking that you agree with me, only that you think through the full consequences of your choice carefully. And then get out and vote on May 14. Gwyn is a retired Businessman who lives in the Greater Victoria Region.

Gwyn Morgan.
by Gwyn Morgan I’m concerned that many British Columbians are more focused on “change” for the sake of change rather than electing the party most likely to foster job creation and financial stability. Our province’s resource endowment has always been a mainstay of both jobs and the generation of revenues needed to fund social programs. From what I have seen and heard, an NDP government would rev-up spending while stymieing resource development through endless environmental reviews and or by just saying “no”, driving investment to other provinces and other countries. We need new mines and gas fields, pipelines, refineries, ports and processing plants to replace jobs lost by tech change and by events like the pine beetle catastrophe Economic development and the protection of the environment are not mutually exclusive. Yes, we must be good stewards of our beautiful province, but we do have the technology to move the economy forward in an environmentally responsible manner. Saying no to new projects will mean job losses for currently employed and no opportunity for young people looking to join the work force. We also need to focus on balancing the provincial budget, rather than taking money away from social programs to fund rising interest costs. Forty years of experience in business has taught me that too much debt is crippling. It scares me that the NDP have rolled out billions of dollars in new spending during this campaign, and their “every dollar is accounted for” rhetoric just isn’t credible because their antidevelopment attitude will reduce revenue at the same time as spend-
B i l u l B o y e n k n n e a tt” h T “ Over the past 12 years, MLA Bill Bennett has led the positive development of our regional hospital. Without the funding Bill secures for us year after year, the people of Kootenay East would simply not have access to the high level of care we have today. This ad is our thank you to Bill and our respectful request that voters recognize Bill Bennett for all he has done for healthcare in this region. Bill Bennett secured funding for the following: 4 New Emergency Ward & Entrance 4 New Diagnostic Centre 4 New CT Scanner 4 Travelling MRI 4 New Ambulatory Care Centre 4 New Intensive Care and Renal Unit 4 Full complement of medical specialists – Emergency Room Physicians, Internal Medicine, ENT, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Obstetrics/ Gynecology, Paediatrics, Family Practice, Radiologists, Anaesthetists, Psychiatrists, Pathologists, Opthalmologists, Urologists
Bill Bennett has worked tirelessly to develop a modern, full-service regional hospital for the East Kootenay. Maintaining these services is a challenge. We are going to need Bill’s proven track record and support in the future.

The Cranbrook 3G Basketball Club U17 team returns with another win.
Girls basketball team wins Alberta tournament Submitted The Cranbrook 3G Basketball Club U17 girls attended the Vision Basketball academy’s annual tournament claiming gold this weekend. The girls are in their third season and first of two years at the U17 level. In their first round match the girls faced the Edmonton Grads U17 team, in a hard fought game and downed the grads 57-47. In their second game the girls faced the Calgary Summit—a very big squad with four girls in the over 6 ft range. In this battle the team showed their resilience
and were able to use the speed to finish up by 15 points and with a 57-42 victory. The final game was a much harder contest when they faced the Southern Alberta Heat. This squad was very quick with stifling defense, “This squad smothered our girls with inyour-face pressure and were able to put our girls down 14 points at the half mark,” said coach Tank. The 3G girls made some huge half-time adjustments both defensively and offensively and were able to have a dominating third quarter to gain a 14 point lead heading

into the final quarter.” The girls were able to finish with a final score of 57-52 over the Heat. “Being able to turn around and make these kind of half time adjustments showed just how basketball smart these girls are,” said Coach Colburn. “This gave them the confidence to advance into the final quater with the momentum.” To show dominance at the U17 level as U 16 athletes shows how hard these girls and coaches have worked to become a great basketball team. Coaches Tank and Colburn are very proud of every athlete on their team and the contribution each player makes at practice and competition.

Off with their heads
The fabulous weather and warm temperatures we've enjoyed over the past few days have also given yards around the region a huge boost. Everywhere you look, plants are sprouting and the first blooms are adding some colour. While this is usually a cause for happiness, for many people there is at least one exception. The yellow blooms of dandelions usually get quite the opposite reaction and gardeners cannot wait to rid their lawns and gardens of these colourful invaders. The dandelion is a perennial, herbaceous plant that gets its name from the French ‘Dent-de-lion’. Translated as ‘Lion’s Tooth’ the name refers to the tooth shape of its leaves. The plant gets more than just its name from Europe. Dandelions were actually introduced by early European settlers who valued it for its nutritional and medicinal properties. They are not native to North America. As with many non-native plants, the dandelion spreads easily, but is difficult to get rid of. They can germinate without long periods of dormancy and flowers do not require cross-fertilization, meaning each flower can fertilize itself and start dispersing seeds as early as the day after it opens. Your best strategy is to get rid of the flowers as soon as they appear. Weeding dandelions can be a seemingly endless chore. Often the more you weed, the faster they grow. If dandelions are sparsely scattered throughout your lawn, you can dig or pull them up. There are special long-handled diggers and weed pullers available that can make this job a lot easier and waiting until after a good rain or deep watering will also take some work out of it. Be sure, however, to remove the entire plant. Dandelions have deep, twisted and brittle tap roots and unless you remove it completely, it will regenerate and send out another flower. And be careful what you do with the dandelion once you do remove it, as there is enough energy stored in a dug out tap root to bring an undeveloped flower to maturity and hence creating more seeds. One of the easiest ways to control infestations of dandelions in the lawn is an application of corn gluten meal. You can purchase this natural, nontoxic product in many garden centers and it works by preventing the germination of dandelion seeds. Follow the manufacturer's directions very early in the season and it will eliminate a good percentage of your problem. A healthy lawn is your best defense against any unwanted invaders. Keeping your lawn healthy and lush, by maintaining a regular fertilizing and watering schedule will keep dandelions and any other weeds at bay, making it impossible for the seeds to land and make contact with the soil. If you do not mind having dandelions in your yard, they can actually be a helpful and tasty addition. Dandelions provide food for ladybugs and other beneficial insects and their large, fleshy taproots help aerate the soil. Young dandelion greens can be added to salads, sautéed or steamed. They have a slightly bitter tinge, similar to chicory and endive. The leaves are highly nutritious, containing more beta-carotene than carrots, as well as iron and calcium. If you want to try eating dandelion leaves, you should pick the ones that have just emerged in the early spring as more mature leaves tend to be quite bitter. The yellow flower heads are edible as well. They can be added for colour and texture, but there are some creative recipes out there, from dandelion heads dipped in batter and fried to make fritters to pickles and even dandelion wine. Even the taproot of the dandelion can be put to good use. It is supposed to strengthen the entire body, especially the liver and gallbladder. In times when coffee was scarce, people used dried dandelion root as a substitute. Chances are most of us will not want to follow in the footsteps of the early settlers, but simply want to rid our yards of dandelions. Your local garden centre can help you find the right solution. Till next time... happy gardening. Submitted by Kerstin

Coming Events
March 2, 1949-May 11, 2003 A loving mother & extra special grandmother. This Mother’s Day marks 10 years since you passed. You are not forgotten dear mother, nor shall you ever be. As long as life & memory last, we will remember thee. We all have different journeys, different paths along the way, we are all meant to learn some things, but never meant to stay. Our destination is a place, far greater than we know. For some the journey’s quicker, for some the journey’s slow. You will always have a special place in our hearts. PS keep your arms around Kassy until I get there. Love Michelle, Pat, Cody & Aribella.

OBITUARY
Desiree Janette MacPherson 1988 - 2013 It is with the deepest sorrow that the family of Desiree MacPherson announces her sudden passing on Saturday, May 4, 2013 in Kelowna, British Columbia. Desiree was born on April 15, 1988 in Kimberley, British Columbia. In her short 25 years, Desiree made an imprint on the hearts of everyone she met. She loved her family, extended family and friends. Desiree was so giving and kind, and always looked for everyone's true potential. It was rare to see her without her gorgeous makeup done and the highest of heels she could find, but she was still a little bit redneck and loved camping, boating and mudding. Desiree expressed herself artistically through her paintings, her love of music and at her job as an Esthetician where her clients became her friends and her co-workers were her family. She was always smiling that bright beautiful smile that could light up a room. Desiree loved life and lived it to the fullest. Her love and passion will be profoundly missed. Desiree is survived by her parents Butch and Cory MacPherson; sisters Miranda (Takeshi) and Paetonn (Matt); grandparents Mel Chadney (Mary) and Jan Chadney; many special aunts, uncles, cousins and close family friends. She also leaves behind Todd, Julie-Ann, Krista and Brooklynn Pearson and the extended Pearson family. A Celebration Of Desiree's Life will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at 3:00 pm at Tie Lake Provincial Park Beach in Jaffray, British Columbia. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service. Condolences for the family can be offered at: www.mcphersonfh.com
