Hotel proposal on front burner NEDC working with Chinese investors for past four months By ToBy gorMan ThE NEwS BULLETiN

Darlene Jepson took advantage of advance voting Friday at the Royal Canadian Legion on East Wellington Road to cast her vote in the 40th provincial general election. B.C. Elections says advance voting was steady, and is expecting a strong voter turnout before voting stations close today (May 14) at 8 p.m.
Stakeholders mull future of learning alternatives By Jenn Mcgarrigle ThE NEwS BULLETiN
More hands-on, project-based learning and the establishment of a centralized trades academy in Nanaimo school district are part of a vision for the future of the learning alternatives program. School officials want to bring the program more in line with 21st century learning practices such as applying classroom-gathered knowl-
edge to real-world problems and allowing students to pursue areas that are applicable to career goals. “It’s about meeting the needs of our students and offering educational options that are different from a regular classroom environment,” said Tim Davie, principal of the learning alternatives programs. “[Learning alternative students] have opted for a different learning environment.” The district has both junior and senior learning alternatives in sep-

arate buildings, but the proposed facilities plan recommends relocating these programs to Nanaimo District Secondary School. Davie said the proposed restructuring includes one alternatives centre encompassing Grades 10-12 students and adults; Grade 8 and 9 students would remain in their catchment schools, as decided by trustees during next year’s budget deliberations. u See ‘TRUSTEES’ /6
China’s 13th largest travel agency is just a few steps away from committing to building a hotel adjacent to the Vancouver Island Conference Centre, says Sasha Angus, chief executive officer of the Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation. Suzhou Youth Travel Services, headquartered near Shanghai, has indicated it is willing to build a 200-room, $50-million hotel in downtown Nanaimo to accommodate an estimated 70,000 tourists expected to visit the Harbour City through its travel programs annually. Angus said the Suzhou proposal is attractive because the company is not seeking subsidies that other proposals have requested, and that the sheer volume of visitors expected will result in high occupancy ratings at their own hotel while spilling over to existing hotels that have recently been struggling to fill its rooms due to a decrease in tourism. “We’ve been working with them for about four months now,” said Angus. “They’re in a place where they’d like to close on this as soon as possible. Another thing that was attractive to us is their ability to not only build to capacity, but to also add significant demand, which will also fulfill the conference centre’s needs.” Mayor John Ruttan said concerns from other local hotel operators have been addressed, noting that the new hotel will attract people here who would not normally have considered Nanaimo as a holiday destination. “This model of bringing so many people here has virtually eliminated the anti-hotel position of the Nanaimo Hotel Association,” said Ruttan. “Members in Nanaimo were concerned another hotel would dilute the pool and already low occupancy rates ... But this is a whole new number of clientele we wouldn’t have otherwise.” u See ‘DEAL /4

Nanaimo property owners can now be notified of their property tax paperfree with the city’s introduction of electronic notices. Through a program called MyBills, making its debut for 2013, the entire tax notice process, from notice to payment, can be done electronically. Using a MyCity account, property owners can view their property tax notices posted online in PDF format. Notices are also archived online enabling residents to see their notice history from previous years or download the files from their own computer 24/7. Taxpayers can sign up for a MyCity account by visiting http://mycity.nanaimo. ca to receive property taxes electronically for 2013. Once a MyCity account has been created and activated, property owners must change their delivery method to e-mail by going to the ‘MyBills’ tab or follow the instructions at www. nanaimo.ca/goto/ mycity. The deadline to sign up for the 2013 property tax year is end of day on May 13. Nanaimo is the first city on Vancouver Island to employ this feature.

and Suzhou Youth Travel Services representatives have already met a number of times and are interested in working together to foster further links for international studies at VIU. “There is significant spinoff where the university is concerned, and obviously the broader business community, when you have 70,000 people coming in, the impact to our retailers, restaurants and other businesses will be significant as well,” said Angus. British Columbia’s west coast environment is becoming one of China’s hottest markets in the tourism industry. Though the city purchased and retain the rights to the doomed Millennium/Suro conference centre hotel plans, Suzhou plans to build its own sleek 15-storey hotel featuring a restaurant on the top floor and a skywalk to the conference centre, though it will be built in the original conference centre hotel footprint on Gordon Street. The deal is still subject to council approval and depositions, though representatives from Suzhou were expected to address council at Monday’s council meeting. “For the future of the community, being a welcoming place where we can welcome new visitors and new investment in our community is going to be incredibly important,” said Angus.

By Chris Bush THE NEWS BULLETIN
Back in the days of coal miners and colonialism, athletic competition and street entertainment were all part of celebrating Queen Victoria’s birthday. Echoes of those traditions have returned for Empire Days 2013, which will include a pre-parade run by the Bastion Running Club and family activities downtown. “This year I wanted to do something a little bit different, so I moved all the entertainment to Diana Krall Plaza,” said Diana Lilley, Empire Days parade chairwoman. Nanaimo’s Empire Days celebrations, according to earliest accounts, have been hosted here since 1863. Events for 2013 started with a Heritage Tea, sponsored by the Order of the Eastern Star May 11 and an official proclamation and flag raising at Pioneer Waterfront Plaza Monday. Traditions continue Thursday (May 16) with the coastal patrol vessel HMCS Nanaimo arriving at Nanaimo Cruise Ship terminal, followed by the May Queen party crowning and pageant at Seaview Elementary School in Lantzville

Friday (May 17). The May Queen party visits the Vancouver Island Military Museum and Nanaimo Museum Saturday (May 18) when the party also fires one of the historic canons at Pioneer Waterfront Plaza at noon. HMCS Nanaimo hosts an open house 1 - 3 p.m. Sunday (May 19) celebrations start off with a Kinsmen pancake breakfast at Diana Krall Plaza at 10 a.m. Entertainment and activities include a bouncy castle, mini doughnut factor y, circus fun with VestaFire Entertainment, balloon artist Crazy Chris, magic shows, B.C. Hydro Power Smart and more. St. Paul’s Anglican Church will host a
hotdog sale starting at noon. “The Bastion Runners are going to run a one mile race about 10 minutes before the parade,” Lilley said. The inaugural running of the Bastion Mile will give spectators and participants a chance to see who is the fastest miler around. The race course takes runners down Commercial Street, up Skinner Street and finishes on Front Street. Nanaimo’s 146th Empire Days Parade starts at 1 p.m. and follows its usual route down Victoria Road, Commercial and Front streets. “Right now we’ve got about 53 entries,” Lilley said. “We have some new people
which is very nice and we’ve got five bands.” The Red Hot Chilli Steppers will be the parade’s grand finale with a performance that includes their float stretching nearly
100 metres down the parade route. Nanaimo Salvation Army and Order of the Easter Star will be on hand celebrating their 125th and 100th anniversaries respectively in Nanaimo. Nanaimo Fire Rescue’s 1913 American LaFrance fire truck, affectionately known as Shaky, will shudder and shake its way through the parade while celebrating its 100th birthday, too. Empire Days celebrations culminate at 10 p.m. at the Nanaimo waterfront with the Fireworks Over the Harbour. u From /1 Phase 1 of the proposals also includes project-oriented trades programs, a mental health day treatment program, a parent-tot learning centre, and a natural resources-focused education for students in the aboriginal outreach program. Davie said these proposals are basically an enhancement of what is already being done. Learning alternatives already has woodworking and automotive shop classes; in a project-oriented trades program, the student would be doing woodworking or automotive all day for a semester instead of simply taking a class and all other subjects would be taught based around that project – the students would do a math lesson and then immediately apply it to the project. The health treatment program aims to bring youth psychiatry, family therapy, youth addiction and other services together under the same roof as education services. “Education is really only one piece of the puzzle,” said Davie. “We’re trying to put the focus on the multi-disciplinary approach. It’s something senior staff have been working on for some time.” He said teachers are already going to integrated case management meetings for students with diagnosed mental illnesses, but having other agencies working out

of the learning alternatives building will ensure more collaboration and comprehensive planning. The parent-tot learning centre proposal – site not determined – is to have a childcare facility in the same building as educational services for parents or expecting parents. While there is currently a daycare next to a secondary school that teen parents can access, this proposal would have parents and children in the same building. Davie said this will allow the district to offer healthy living and parenting courses alongside the education program and hopefully entice some young parents back to school. “It’s really providing an opportunity to increase the life chances for both the young parents and their infant children,” he said. The proposed change to the aboriginal outreach program is to orient education around natural resources projects. Davie said projects could
include stream restoration work or horticulture. As in the trades proposal, students would do the work all day, every day for a semester, with all the curriculum based around the projects. A long-term goal for the department is to have a centralized trades school in the district. “The drive for this is really coming first of all through the B.C. Jobs Plan,” said Davie. He said school officials want to build a vision for a trades school with the help of shop teachers, Vancouver Island University and industry stakeholders, and pointed to the decrease in secondary shop programs over the past two decades as supporting the need for a centralized program where resources can be focused. Trustees gave preliminary support to the proposed direction at last week’s education committee meeting and Davie hopes to move forward with at least some of the Phase 1 proposals in the fall. Jamie Brennan, school board chairman, said trustees who spoke at the meeting spoke in favour of the learning alternatives vision, particularly the effort to improve trades training programs. “It’s moving the district forward, responding to a need that staff have identified and it opens up more opportunities for students,” he said. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

This Russian city has been on the mind of the Grade 10 Dover Bay Secondary School student lately, ever since he learned two weeks ago that he would be attending an international geography championship there alongside students from about 20 other countries. Burnley, who in the last three years has placed second, fourth and seventh out of hundreds of competitors in the annual Great Canadian Geography Challenge, is one of three students selected to represent Canada at the National Geographic World Championships in St. Petersburg this July. His interest in maps started at a young age – so young he can’t remember a time when he didn’t like them. His father Chris remembers his son taking a keen interest in signs as a baby, and that fascination soon led to maps – his parents gave him his first atlas when he was six and while he couldn’t read all of the words at first, he spent hours looking through the book. “Maps are my thing,” said Burnley, who esti-

mates he spends four or five hours a week drawing out both real and madeup places. “I can picture a map in my mind and draw it.” When he started writing geography quizzes in elementary school, his interest broadened to other areas of the discipline – he knows countless facts about the inhabitants, weather and geological features of different countries. While he said his photographic memory doesn’t seem to extend beyond
maps and geography facts, it is a skill that impresses all who know him – as a party trick, Burnley can name the capital city of almost any country friends and relatives throw at him. He has already been in contact with the other two members of Team Canada, both of whom live in Ontario, and the three of them have divided up the world. Burnley is cramming his brain full of facts about the flora and fauna, geology and peoples in Asia and Oceania and he

plans to study every day from now until the contest. “I’m nervous now; I’ll be nervous then,” he said. “But it’s totally worth it.” While his son’s trip to St. Petersburg is paid for, Chris said the family hummed and hawed a little before deciding to spend the money to join him. “It was one of those things … your child doesn’t represent Canada very often,” he said. The family plans to do a little travelling after the competition, including Finland, Estonia and Iceland. Not one to let a geographic fact go unacknowledged, Burnley said once he goes to Russia he will have travelled to both the largest country by area as well as the smallest country by area – the family visited Vatican City last year. Ellen Curtis, educational programs manager with the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, the group that organizes the Great Canadian Geography Challenge through its education committee, said making it onto Team Canada is quite a feat – students must win at the classroom, school, provincial and national levels and then the society picks the team based on winners from the past two years of the competition. “Upwards of 100,000 students participate every year,” she said. “These are by far the best of the best in Canada.”
Mercedes-Benz expanded its operations in Nanaimo with the opening of a modern retail facility. Hannu Ylanko, vice-president of national sales for Mercedes-Benz Canada, recently joined Sylvester Chuang, dealer principal of Three Point Motors Nanaimo and dealership general manager Peter Trzewik, to celebrate the grand opening of the new retail building. The new structure at 2472 Kenworth Rd. replaces the current Three Point Motors Nanaimo on Terminal Avenue, and now operates as Mercedes-Benz Nanaimo. The 14,000-square-foot building represents a considerable investment in the area that will significantly expand the capacity of the dealership. The open-concept showroom spans nearly 6,000 sq. ft., providing an ideal environment to display a broad selection of vehicles from exciting MercedesBenz, AMG, Sprinter and Smart product line-ups. A state-of-the-art service area features four fullyequipped service bays and one oversized bay designed to accommodate Sprinter vans. This provides sufficient capacity to further improve processes and better serve the after-sales, parts and accessories needs of valued customers. In addition, a 2,200 sq.-ft. drive-thru provides customers a convenient vehicle drop-off or pick-up area that protects them from the weather. The overall layout of the entire facility follows the trademark Auto Haus design concept, featuring extensive use of glass to promote transparency throughout the building. This signature design also guarantees a consistent brand identity for each dealership in the company’s cross-Canada network, regardless of location. “Sylvester Chuang has been a trusted long-time partner of Mercedes-Benz Canada, and we applaud his decision to expand operations in Nanaimo by constructing a beautiful new retail facility,” said Ylanko. “This substantial investment has solidified our commitment to this growing market. “We are confident that this new dealership will provide an excellent foundation from which to better serve the needs of existing customers in the area, while also providing a platform to further expand our client base.” For more information, please visit www.nanaimo. mercedes-benz.ca/.

Not too hard to cast a vote
If the last time B.C. voters went to the polls is any indication, they’re just as likely not to cast a ballot in today’s (May 14) provincial election as they are to mark their X. In 2009 just 50 per cent of eligible voters turned out at the polls to make their voice heard. In fact voter turnout has been declining steadily since 1983, when 70 per cent of eligible voters exercised their franchise. It’s not like voting is hard work. Short of knocking on front doors and sticking a ballot under people’s noses, Elections B.C. has made it increasingly easier and more convenient to vote. Advance polls were open through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voters could also cast their ballot at their nearest electoral office from the call of the election right up until election day. There’s an electoral office in every riding and they are open until 4 p.m. It was even possible to vote by mail. Residents who won’t be in their electoral district on voting day can vote in any other riding in the province. In Comox, voters could stay in their cars, as a drive-thru polling station was set up at a former car dealership. And while Elections B.C. studied the viability of online voting, there’s no guarantee that would increase voter participation. In Markham, Ont., where residents have been allowed to vote online in the past three municipal elections, participation didn’t increase, but it also didn’t decline. Throughout the election campaign, the News Bulletin provided information on all the candidates in the NanaimoNorth Cowichan, Nanaimo and ParksvilleQualicum ridings. We covered the issues key to the central Island to hopefully help the voter make an informed decision. We published a list of advanced polling stations and where to vote today. So really, there’s no excuse not to vote. Just get out and do it.

concentrate on trying to figure out what vegetables would work best for container gardening. What I love about gardening is how connected I feel to the earth. There is something about moving your hands through the dirt and feeling the coldness of it. And there is always the joy of watching plants that you have seeded grow into plants or bloom. It is calming and rewarding. There is nothing like sitting on the balcony full of beautiful plants on a hot summer day. It’s beautiful to feel the breeze on your skin and catch the scent of lavender, basil and mint in the breeze. During the hottest part of the day it’s nice to sit back and drink a cool glass of lemonade, close your eyes and just breathe in the salty Nanaimo air. Growing plants reminds me of my childhood. My mother always had a vegetable garden in the backyard every year. She would allow us to plant peas, carrots, radishes and lettuce. I remember being able to go out and pick fresh peas and carrots from the yard. There was nothing quite like eating fresh produce we grew ourselves. The food I buy from the neighbourhood market never seems to have the same taste as the food we grew ourselves, but maybe that was because it took so much labour for us to grow it. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

Pipeline’s economic boon a myth To the Editor,
Those who believe that the Kinder Morgan/Trans Mountain pipeline expansion will bring jobs and economic benefits to B.C. are being mislead by industry propaganda. If they dig a little deeper into the economic benefits of the pipeline, they will find Kinder Morgan’s own literature gives the bottom line on employment – 35 new jobs in B.C. Contrast that to the hundreds of millions of dollars in annual profits for Kinder Morgan. It is the company’s owners and shareholders who benefit, not B.C. residents. The bitumen is all for export. None of it will meet B.C.’s energy needs unless we buy it back from China at
higher prices. Consider the economic effects of a spill. The pipeline goes through the headwaters of the Fraser River and crisscrosses its major tributaries on its way to southwestern B.C. where it passes through settlements of more than three million people. At the end of the pipeline, tankers travel through Burrard Inlet out into the Salish Sea before heading to foreign ports. Currently, 30 large tankers carrying bitumen travel through local waters every year. If the pipeline expansion project goes through, the number of tankers carrying bitumen will increase to 300. If this proposal goes through, a major oil spill in our local waters
is inevitable at some point in the future. What will the effects on local tourism be in the event of a major oil spill in our local waters? How many jobs in tourism and fishing will be threatened by such an event? There are alternatives. Renewable energy surpasses tar sands in return on investment and provides far more jobs. Other countries are shifting off fossil fuels and adding electric transportation alternatives. B.C. needs to move into the 21st century. When people vote on May 14, let’s hope they consider their candidate’s position on the pipeline expansion proposal.

Officer a credit to his profession To the Editor,
Re: Employees, police thwart brazen theft, May 9. While shopping in Canadian Tire May 7, I was witness to the theft suspect being confronted by the store manager. He was professional in the way he dealt with the situation, as were the several male staffers who surrounded the suspect. The suspect was belligerent and threatening and seemed hell bent on getting out of the store. It was then that the real superstar of the situation entered. An impressive, young RCMP officer – who was off duty and shopping with his wife – got involved. With exceptional verbal skills, he managed to calm a worsening situation within seconds, arrest the suspect and detain him until a police car and uniformed member arrived. The off-duty officer was professional and his actions were commendable. He is indeed a credit to the RCMP and I for one am pleased we have members like that serving our community even when off-duty.
Thanks to his actions, a potentially damaging situation was avoided.

Broom’s strengths could be beneficial To the Editor,
Re: Island towns battling broom, Letters, May 2. Scotch broom grows everywhere on the Island and has become a problem. The plant has no value, grows quickly and nothing eats it. I have always said that if someone found a commercial use for broom bush, they would be a multi-millionaire overnight. It is apparent that nothing eats it, including bugs and deer. The commercial value to the plant may be tied to this fact. It may be as simple as extracting the oils from the plant and applying it to a wood or another plant as a preservative. But, we know it will not be that simple. If the broom problem was put to continual testing and brainstorming at a university level, there may be a profitable outcome. It could be a medicine,
a textile, a fuel or a preservative. This is just another one of those local problems that needs a better solution. Some day most of us will look back and say, “Why didn’t I think of that?”

Budget mathematics totals $175.7 million To the Editor,
Re: Finding cuts starts on Day 1, Opinion, May 9. I found your comments about Coun. Jim Kipp’s claim of $175 million budget being inaccurate not only disturbing, but surprising to be sure. It is hard to believe that people cannot or are unable to add the operating expenditures of $123.2 million and capital expenditures of $52.5 and get a total spending of $175.7 million. This is basic math, like two and two is four. It does not get any simpler. There is $175.7 million of real money being spent regardless of which pocket or account it comes out of. To imply the $52.5 million is just monopoly or play money because

the city is spending it on non-operating items is both irresponsible and misleading. A tax dollar spent no matter from which budget or expenditure it comes from is a tax dollar spent. To say any thing else shows a lack of appreciation for the tax dollars the city receives and the people who pay them.

Contract B.C. Hydro to rebuild two dams To the Editor,
Re: Time running out for dam decision, Letters, May 9. In this day and age of ‘green’ energy seeking solutions and energy companies damming up streams all over B.C., I imagine any intelligent discussion has included the option to allow B.C. Hydro to rebuild the dams at their cost to produce electricity. This would offset the cost and still allow the use of the area as a park. I see no better compromise to an area adapted to such a venture.

Today’s technology allows Canadians to police the police To the Editor,
Many of us are aware of the video posted on Facebook that appears to show a Lower Mainland plainclothes police officer punching a cyclist named Andi Akhavan. The Professional Standards Section of the Vancouver Police Department is looking into the arrest. Originally known as Internal Affairs, the PSS website states its name was adopted in early 2006 to more accurately reflect the expanded role of the section. A similar, yet more severe incident took place in Chemainus, when RCMP Const. David Pompeo, one of two plainclothes officers, conducted a traffic stop on Sept. 18, 2009. The vehicle owner, Bill Gillespie, did not immediately stop his vehicle and in the ensuing arrest, Pompeo fired his handgun, striking Gillespie in the lower neck. Gillespie stated later he was not armed and did not threaten the officer. Pompeo was found guilty of aggravated assault on Feb. 14 and still remains on restricted duties with the Nanaimo RCMP. How is it a convicted criminal charged with aggravated assault remains employed for the RCMP? Pompeo is appealing the verdict on eight grounds. Gillespie filed a complaint with the Commission for Public Complaints against the RCMP. The B.C. Civil Liberties Association also filed complaint on Gillespie’s behalf. This association is dedicated to the advocation of Canadians civil liberties and human rights. The BCCLA publishes
and distributes free copies of an arrest handbook to universities and other organizations with the goal of informing civilians on “the range of conduct citizens can expect from police in the lawful exercise of their duties.”. Why does the average, uninformed Canadian require a handbook for dealing with the very organization established to protect them? In the case of Akhavan, we have an individual whose non-confrontational actions appear to be misinterpreted as resisting arrest, ultimately resulting in being violently assaulted by a police officer. Similarly, in the case of Pompeo, an individual was almost killed by an officer apparently for not immediately stopping his vehicle. Some would argue these officers’ actions were justified given that many suspects violently resist arrest and maintaining an officer’s safety is priority. Canadians have taken for granted that democracy in this country means that all participate in the life of the nation and all receive consideration and a degree of care, and all do so through the rule of law. We cannot allow the police to be above the law and with the ever growing presence of mobile cameras, Canadians have the opportunity to do something they haven’t in the past – police the police. Remember, officers are like employees of the public – and like any job – an employer must keep watch over that employee to correct mistakes. Brandon Blond Nanaimo

Sailing co-op makes boating fun, affordable
Against violence
If owning a boat is the only thing stopping you from getting on the water, don’t bail out yet. Van-Isle Sailing Co-op has a solution. Started in 2005, the co-op offers Nanaimo area residents opportunities to get out on the water without incurring the expense of buying and maintaining a boat. At a few hundred dollars a year for membership, the cost is far below that of ownership. “The co-op is for people who love to go sailing, but don’t have enough time to warrant the expense of keeping a boat in the water,” said David McCallum, co-op membership director. The non-profit organization also teaches sailing to both prospective sailors with little or no experience or others with some background on the water. Anyone interested in learning more about the co-op is invited to take part in an open house from 9 a.m. into the late afternoon on June 8 on the docks at the Nanaimo Boat Basin. Members are provided access for a onetime fee of $400, plus annual fees of $450 per person, $525 for a family and $100 for an associate member restricted to crewing. For information, please call 250-668-6387.

Singers from around the province gather for Chorfest, a three-day event that culminates with a gala concert BY RACHEL STERN THE NEWS BULLETIN
M
usic allows Linda Dier to express herself and experience joy. “Music makes me happy. It doesn’t matter how I feel when I start singing, as soon as I start to sing they all (stress and worries) disappear,” she said. “For me it had a huge impact on my life and I love music.” She loves to come together and share her joy with other singers and is a founding member of Nanaimo Sings. “Part of the beauty of singing in a choral setting is you become something bigger as part of the whole,” said Dier. Dier, who is also co-chairwoman of Chorfest 2013, also experiences joy when she sees youth sing and she is excited that the Children’s Chorfest Choir perform during the BCCF Chorfest gala concert Sunday (May 19), 2:30 p.m. at the Port Theatre. “It’s gratifying to see children and youth singing. It speaks to the future of choral music to have youth coming up singing and loving it,” said Dier. “I am excited to hear them. They are all coming from children’s choirs that are well trained. They are incredible – their voices are incredible.” Nanaimo Sings is hosting Chorfest 2013. Dier said the choir is excited because it’s the first time Nanaimo has hosted the event.
“We have never had the pleasure to host Chorfest until now,” she said. Chorfest is a three-day event where the choirs get together and share knowledge and the love of singing. It culminates with the gala concert on Sunday. The music chosen for the concert is by Canadian composers. Dier said it’s an eclectic mix of music that has a lot of local colour such as a song about the Williams Lake stampede and another about the Royal Hudson. During the concert on Sunday the choral groups will sing individually and then come together for the finale. “The impact is pretty phenomenal,” said Dier about the performance with all three choirs. She said during that part of the event there will be three generations of singers onstage, about 240 singers. There are three choirs attending the event this year. The Children’s Chorfest Choir, directed by Marni Strome, includes singers from the Nanaimo Youth Choir, Richmond Honour Youth Choir, Viva Children’s Choir, Cowichan Valley Youth Choir and the Nanaimo B.C. Boys Choir. The British Columbia Youth

Juniors just miss in home opener I
T-MEN BEATEN 11-10 by lastplaced Lakers. BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN
The junior A Timbermen didn’t win their home opener, but at least they know where they went wrong. The Nanaimo Timbermen lost 11-10 to the Burnaby Lakers on Saturday in B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League action at Frank Crane Arena. “We just got outworked,” said Brad Dougan, the team’s coach. “You look at the stats on paper and it showed us being the favourites to win. We played hard for the first 10 minutes of the game … and thought it would be a cakewalk the rest of the way. “ T h e g re e n g u y s started getting loose balls and running and we couldn’t keep up.” A 4-2 first-period lead for Nanaimo evaporated, but the T-men got another chance to take control late in the second period. A series of Burnaby penalties gave Nanaimo extended power-play time. “Five-on-three or fouron-three, it’s not OK to have an outside shot,” Dougan said. “We’ve got to get the ball moving and [get] cutters and let their defence break down and find an open
cross-crease and there’ll be an empty net. But we’re settling for an outside shot.” The missed powerplay opportunity was magnified early in the third as the Lakers went on a 4-0 run to take an 11-7 lead. Nanaimo got back in it and stole the ball in the dying seconds and created a prime scoring chance with two seconds left but Burnaby’s goalie made a game-saving stop. Shots ended up 55-39 for the home team. Mitch Parker led the T-men with four goals and Brett Hawrys had a hat trick and two assists. Brett Fleming, Owen Barker and Ryan Hanna were the other goal scorers. The Timbermen (1-3) haven’t really earned a win yet this season, but their record improved last week after they were awarded a default win over the New Westminster Salmonbellies. The ’Bellies were found to have dressed an ineligible player in a 16-4 romp over the T-men last weekend. “We went over to New West and got smoked, so to get that is kind of…” Dougan trailed off. “Two points is two points.” GAME ON … The T-men host the Port Coquitlam Saints (2-2) Saturday (May 18) at 5 p.m. at Frank Crane. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

VIBI beaten in semifinal, just barely BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN
The VIBI Mariners were just one inning away from getting the chance to play for a championship. Nanaimo’s Vancouver Island Baseball Institute finished third at Canadian College Baseball Conference nationals in Kamloops this past weekend. VIBI led the University of Calgary 3-2 heading into the ninth inning, but the Dinos managed a two-RBI single to take the lead. In the bottom of the ninth the M’s got the leadoff man aboard but eventually the season ended with a 7-4 double play.

Kramer, Greg Fraser and Brock Maschmeyer. Mike Vandekamp, Clippers coach, said it’s always tough to see the 20-year-olds go. “And this year in our case, it’s probably as tough as ever, to be honest, because we’ve got six real quality kids there. Unbelievable kids,” he said. “As an organization, as a team, you need to have your older guys be your go-to people both on and off the ice and I think we’ve really been blessed with that this year.”
“They battled,” said Jordan Blundell, VIBI manager. “That is what makes playoff baseball so interesting and fun and exciting and tough and emotionally draining after the fact. It sucks, but it’s life, it’s baseball.” The Mariners had a tough go of it in the regular season in 2013, finishing with a 9-19 record, but they were playing their best ball at the right time and ended up going 3-2 at the national tournament. “For them to overcome the hole they were in and get everything together, I’m really proud of the guys for accomplishing that,” Blundell said. The M’s started the tourney with a 4-2 win Thursday over the host Thompson Rivers University WolfPack, then followed up Friday with an 8-1 victory over the Okanagan Coyotes.

Inbrief Timbermen limbering up for first game sports
Runners ready for Bastion Mile Runners will have to go pretty fast at the Bastion Mile, or they might get run over by a parade. The Bastion Running Club has organized a new 1.6-kilometre race for Sunday (May 19) just before the start of the Empire Days parade, along the downtown parade route. “Some of the oldtimers in the Nanaimo running community said they could remember the day when there used to be a mile race downtown before the parade on the parade route,” said Mike Thibodeau, Bastion Running Club president. “And I thought it was a fantastic idea.” The course comes ready-made with spectators who should inspire runners to fast times, said Thibodeau. The event is open to anyone, and people can pre-register online at www.bastionrunning.ca. There will be race-day registration at the start line at Nob Hill Park from 11:30-12:30 a.m. and the race starts at 12:50 p.m. Cost to participate is $10. Most of the players have trickled into town in recent weeks and the team has upped the frequency and intensity of practices. “Everyone’s starting to learn how everybody likes to play,” said Zak Boychuk, T-men goalie. “We’re really turning the corner.” Toth said players have been working hard. “That’s the only thing

The VIBI Mariners fell 10-5 later that day to the eventual national champions, the Prairie Baseball Academy Dawgs, then concluded the round robin Saturday with a 16-9 win over the Dinos that earned them a berth in the semis. Connor Russell got his team off to the right start in the first game with a seven-inning complete game in which he allowed just one earned run and struck out four. Jackson McCuaig had an RBI double in that game. The second game it was Cody Chartrand earning the win, striking out 10 batters over 5 2/3 innings. Cody Andreychuk was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Chad Schultz had two RBIs. In the next game’s loss, Andreychuk’s home run was the only real highlight for the M’s. The final round robin game, on the other hand, was full of highlights as the Mariners came back from an early 7-0 deficit to win big. Cory Curtis was the win-

Schultz was 2-for-3 with two walks and two RBIs and Josh Siemens was 2-for-2 with two RBIs. In the semifinal loss, Darren Kolk struck out 12 batters over eight innings and also helped his cause at the plate with two hits and two RBIs. Andreychuk went 3-for-5. All the Mariners are eligible to return next season, but some may move on elsewhere. Either way, they’ll be better ball players after the lessons of the 2013 season. “They’ll use that experience to hopefully change the results,” Blundell said. “Wherever they are, if they’re with us next year or whatever team or situation they’re in, in that big game they’re able to draw on that experience and be successful.”
