Key battles brewing in Surrey and North Delta
A PLACE OF PEACE IN DELTA Largest mosque in B.C. opens on River Road this week
Nearly half of local ridings are without an incumbent MLA by Kevin Diakiw B.C. VOTERS are heading to the
polls today in a much-anticipated contest where the outcome is far from certain. Ridings in Surrey and North Delta are considered to be key battlegrounds, partly because many saw tight races in the last election. What’s more, there are four ridings (out of nine) without incumbent MLAs, meaning anything could happen. Those ridings are Delta-North, which was left vacant by the B.C.

or the local Muslim community, Saturday May 18 will be a day of celebration, with thousands expected to attend the opening of the Baitur Rahman Mosque on River Road in Delta – the fifth mosque in the province and largest of its kind in B.C. And for members of the Ahmaddiyya Muslim Jama’at, an international revival movement within Islam with tens of millions of followers in more than 200 countries, the mosque will be a place of peace.
“Having a mosque in Delta is a unique project,” said president and communications director Rizwan Peerzada, “if you believe in God then this is a place for you.” Located on a four-acre property just west of the Alex Fraser Bridge, the 35,000-sq.-ft. concrete facility that cost nearly $8 million to build features three central themes: worship, exercise and education. At the northeast corner of the building is a large tower, or minaret, that provides a strong focal point, a symbol of life and guidance of the mosque, Peerzada said. Walking into the main temple area,
visitors are met with bright natural light cascading from a large circular opening in the ceiling, along with a series of smaller windows lining the high exterior walls. The area is designed to hold up to 900 people, with men and women having their own separate entrances. Men will enter the mosque from the west; women from the east. The mosque is built in the shape of a cube, designed for all worshippers to face east to the holy city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia – birthplace of Muhammad and the place of pilgrimage for millions of Muslims. Appeal dismissed for man who shot teenager
The department of homeland Security had wanted a toll applied at land crossings into the U.S. from Canada and Mexico, but the U.S. Senate judiciary committee voted Thursday to block the idea – at least for this year.

a Man who admitted to gunning
down a teen in a Surrey street nearly three years ago has had an appeal of his jail sentence dismissed. Steven Mulligan-Brum had a hearing in the B.C. Court of Appeal on May 6. Mulligan-Brum, 23, pleaded guilty in September 2011 to manslaughter for shooting 16-year-old Adem Aliu to death. He was sentenced last May to seven years in prison, minus twoand-a-half years – credit for time served prior to sentencing. Aliu and a group of friends were drinking and walking in the area of 141 Street and 103 Avenue, allegedly vandalizing cars, including a BMW owned by Mulliganadem aliu Brum. The court heard the accused came out of his house carrying a loaded handgun and fired two shots at the group of youths. One of the shots hit Aliu in the head. Mulligan-Brum apologized in court, saying he was foolish and had grown up since the shooting. Judge Elizabeth Arnold-Bailey, however, didn’t feel he was truly remorseful. He was also on probation at the time and was prohibited from possessing weapons. Appeal court justices dismissed the sentence appeal the same day it was heard.

May 14 is election day: Polls close tonight at 8 p.m. From Page 1 Surrey-Panorama, where Liberal Stephanie Cadieux left in favour of running in Cloverdale. Surrey-Panorama is also a riding to watch as Surrey Coun. Marvin Hunt is running for the Liberals there. If he wins, Surrey could be headed for a municipal byelection. Polls have been all over the place leading up to the election, first placing the NDP far in the lead, then showing the party with only a marginal lead over the Liberals. The B.C. Green party and B.C. Conservatives can’t be written off in this contest either, with both parties fighting hard to
grab a seat or two. To read profiles of Surrey and North Delta candidates, as well as view maps of the riding boundaries, go to surreyleader.com and click on the red “Election” tab near the top of the site. The polls will close at 8 p.m. tonight (Tuesday, May 14). To vote, bring your voter registration card. If you don’t have that, you’ll need one of the following: • Picture ID from the federal or provincial government; • A certificate of Indian status; • Two documents, such as utility bills, that together show your name and address. strict party discipline. The Liberals are no different. As a Green candidate I can be more accountable to my constituents and the general public. 3. What are the most significant issues facing your riding and what would you do about them? Surrey is B.C’. s second-largest city, but consistently gets ignored on major issues. One issue is the lack of Surrey’s public transit infrastructure. I will address the current inadequacies in seniors’ healthcare, focusing on providing a strong foundation for community and home-based care. Jobs can be created locally by local businesses that take advantage of the new economy which will need renewable energy, green building and retrofits, manufactured goods, food and food processing and the restoration of damage to ecological systems. 4. What are the most significant issues facing B.C. and what would you do about them? The Liberal government pursued natural resource extraction at an unsustainable rate. We need to extract these natural resources at a rate that both benefits the economy and leaves enough for future generations. B.C. has the secondhighest child poverty rate in Canada, which is unacceptable and systemic barriers must be reformed or removed. My independent voice in Victoria will consistently challenge the policies of the government and ensure that what is being done is the best option available; minimizing costs and maximizing benefits to British Columbians.

The facility also features a large multipurpose gymnasium for youth sports and will host a large school component for young people. For Ahmaddiyya Muslim Jama’at national president Lal Malik, the mosque is a symbol of peace. “Some in the Muslim faith believe that the jihad (or religious duty) gives us the right to harm those who disagree with us,” said Malik. “But no one has the right to use force in any manner. a report of suspected metal theft in the 19700-block of 55 Avenue last month found a Surrey man wanted on two outstanding warrants. Langley RCMP went to an alley in the neighbourhood around 4 p.m. April 25, after a citizen reported a suspicious male. Officers found a man who said he was collecting scrap metal from area properties, a Chevrolet Blazer, and a trailer. The man, 42, was arrested after a check of police databases determined he was wanted in Surrey and New Westminster. Police said the unregistered Blazer and trailer were both in extremely poor condition with numerous mechanical deficiencies” including a dismantled dashboard and electrical cables attached to the battery under the hood running into the cab through the passenger door. A variety of tools including a new welder were found in the rear of the Blazer; the welder was determined stolen from Surrey on April 23. The investigation is ongoing.

B.C. ELECTION
Get informed, then vote
RAESIDE
C
andidates in today’s provincial election who are committed to connecting with voters have been knocking on doors. Lots of them. And at the doorstep, it’s easy to sort out the candidates who are committed to their riding and those who are in the race just for a comfy chair in Victoria or helicopter rides to a cabinet table. Simply put, good candidates know their riding. Good candidates won’t speak in generalities, telling you about the need to replace aging school infrastructure or that health-care wait lists are unacceptable. They won’t talk about the need for more rapid transit or debate the future of the carbon tax. They also won’t speak of the need to boost our forestry and mining industries to ensure British Columbia continues to enjoy the confidence of investors. All are important issues, sure. But let the leaders sort that out. Voters who really care how many dollars will be invested in this program or that program are free to study platforms of the parties, most of which lay this out on websites and campaign literature. Besides, party leaders are trumpeting these facts throughout the campaign, which is dutifully followed by hordes of news media. Local candidates who deserve support are ones who talk about issues facing constituents in Surrey’s eight ridings and in Delta-North. When asked about education on the doorstep, good candidates will talk about how existing schools will be upgraded – and new ones built – to keep up with the need in fast-growing neighbourhoods like Clayton Heights in Cloverdale and Grandview in South Surrey. When asked about health care, they’ll talk about the need to continue improvements at Surrey Memorial Hospital. When asked about transportation, they’ll talk about ways to best expand transit service in Surrey – be it by light rail, SkyTrain or more buses – or in Delta, vow to keep the Massey Tunnel upgrade front and centre. Some candidates running for election May 14 know their stuff because they care about their community. Others aren’t near as familiar with their potential constituents and what they can do to help them. Listen closely. Read campaign literature. And consider what kind of politician you’d like to represent your neighbourhood. Then get out and vote today. – Black Press
POLITICS
nother election campaign has come and gone, with the ritual posturing of political parties and most news media searching for anything they can portray as a conflict. Now comes the time to wonder why not enough people cared, or informed themselves about the real problems of running this $40 billion corporation called the B.C. government. Why would they, when the whole thing is presented as a combination of beauty contest and sports event, with endless discussion of polls and “attack ads” and who’s ahead and what’s the score? Again we have seen the truth of former prime minister Kim Campbell’s observation that elections are no time to talk about serious issues. Indeed, there are some things you can’t speak of at all. Peace River North MLA Pat Pimm caused a stir at a candidates’ debate when he referred to constituents’ concerns that disabled children can cause difficulties in classrooms. He didn’t say classrooms should be

Good grief, that might raise the question of whether the state should be taking money away from some people and giving it to others so they can live where they otherwise couldn’t afford to live. We even have rules preventing the media from reporting polls on election day. People might be influenced by this, you see. If you tell them Party X is far ahead, they might stay home and mow the lawn instead. If you tell them someone is making a comeback, they might change their vote because they want to be on the winning side, or the one that has “momentum.” Just like any other sport. The news media are steadily losing influence with the public. There are many factors involved, including the vast array of information sources that are available at most people’s fingertips. Another factor is treating the public like they’re idiots. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com

Ravine green space is a ‘gem’ recenTly, aT Prince Charles
Elementary School, an information meeting was held regarding sewer line upgrades to be done in the ravine area (100 Avenue, west of 128 Street) of Robson Park. Sign-in sheets were there to record attendees. No comment sheets were made available. Some of the reader boards showed scenarios with photos purporting to have been taken at the ravine area of Robson Park, and, when staff were put on the spot regarding same, they acknowledged this to be a fallacy. The reader boards did not refer to the ravine as part of Robson Park, but staff did acknowledge this error, when questioned. We did not see any environmental reports. We were advised that there would be a bird count. What about fish and reptile count? What about mammal count? Did city of Surrey’s Environmental Advisory Committee know of the information meeting? A major City of Surrey works initiative recently revamped Robson Park (between 99 and 100 Avenues); however, the ravine area of the park was untouched. About 50 years ago, we residents petitioned door-to-door to have the ravine added to Robson Park. It is a “gem” with a beautiful canopy of trees protecting the path and the creek. To be told that the trees will be replaced four-for-one in no way will leave the ravine portion of Robson Park with shade trees to protect the birds and the fish. When one walks the contiguous park area, there are ducks catching fish and there is a resident beaver in the pond. He found his way up the creek from the Fraser River area. Replacement trees will be of a maximum replacement height which is minuscule in comparison to the mature trees presently in the ravine. Students of Prince Charles school have been custodians of the ravine, cleaning out massive amounts of garbage for the City of Surrey to dispose of. My children are in their mid-40s. They did it. Neighbourhood children who attended prior to mine, did it. Their legacy has been carried on by the school. Why not upgrade in the residentaffected area and leave the ravine in its present canopied condition? Annie Kaps Surrey

Pitch in to keep our parks trash-free
as cITIzens of the city of parks, we are entitled to take great pride in the diversity of our parks. They benefit users in many ways, from walkers, joggers, bird lovers to plain stress relief, but as beautiful as our urban forests appear, there are heaps of garbage accumulated in there over the years and everyone seems to believe that it is someone else’s problem. I am on a mission, focusing my efforts on the south end of Green Timbers Urban Forest, where
I have collected well over a ton of garbage this spring alone and lost 25 pounds in the process. I have plenty more trash left in there to keep me busy for the summer. It is not even hard. Most people could do it. Go for a stroll in any of our parks with two standard-size garbage bags. Make a big pile where it makes sense and report it to the city. The main trails may only have smoking debris like cigarette butts and plastic wraps,
pop cans and such, but the small side trails often take me to abandoned campsites, leftover party artifacts, forgotten stolen goods, or evidence of wire stripping made by petty thieves leaving piles of plastics in creeks and ponds without a care for salmonids, ducks, raccoons, frogs or chickadees. Our forests need your help beyond Earth Day.

What about the right to silence?
everyThIng comes with a price
– or does it? What about noise? Fees is a buzzword today. Tolls on bridges, eco fees on bottles and cans, carbon fees emptying your wallets at the fuel pumps, fees on
electronics, paints… you name it, the list is never-ending. But nothing on noise. Your neighbours crank up their lawn mowers, power washers, chain saws, power saws, weed whackers, and leaf blowers, but no one seems to complain. It’s just the Joneses beautifying their green space. We all do it, but that doesn’t make it right. Doors slamming all hours of the day… doesn’t anyone know how not to make noise? If I crank up my music, someone is offended and calls the cops. Why is this different from the masses making their Garden of Edens beautiful with all types of noise? Trains waiting to go, diesels humming, then the engineer gets the green light and look out, it’s mayhem – he’s on the horn to alert the crossings and anyone within a 10-mile radius at four in the morning that the monster is off. It’s like they fell asleep on the horn button.
TransLink is in a financial mire
TrusT our regional bureaucrats to try to screw the motorist once again, to raise funds to subsidized ill -conceived and obsolete transit planning and investment, by wanting to implement road pricing. Road pricing, contrary to what the motorist is being told, is not widely implemented, nor has it been very successful when it has been. Gas taxes and bridge tolls are a form of road pricing, but our bureaucrats want more. For road pricing to be successful, the region must have a viable public transit service for the motorist, which we don’t, nor will we under current planning. The reason why there are demands for road pricing is simple. TransLink has squandered billions of taxpayers’ money on “showcase” light-metro projects, which have done little to attract the motorist
from the car, and they need more money to do the same. Since 1994, the regional share has remained at 57 per cent for car drivers, which indicated that TransLink, instead of doing the right things, is doing the wrong things. Universal cheap fares for students; rejecting much cheaper, just as effective light rail in favour of the hugely expensive obsolete SkyTrain light metro system; and an out-ofcontrol bureaucracy overseen by an out-of-touch board of directors have all helped TransLink to dig itself into a financial mire. Sadly, road pricing will not solve any problems and in fact, will help TransLink to pursue its madness by doing the same thing over and over again, always hoping for different results. D. Malcolm Johnston Delta
I could go on and on, but do you get my drift? A deaf girl knocked at my door selling deaf education system cards with signing symbols to support her college education. This is when the light went on for me and I had to make my point to the masses, if anyone can hear.
What price do we put on noise? Don’t I have the right to silence once in awhile? This is one of the five senses that never turns off. I have tinnitus, better known as ringing in the ear. Many things can cause it, but the majority of the symptoms come from exposure over time to loud noise. Isn’t my hearing important enough to warrant peace and quiet? Planes, trains, automobiles and especially humans are all noise polluters. Maybe we should tax noise or have an incentive to not make noise. Why not credits for being quiet? We’ve all heard of eating healthy, so what about hearing healthy? “Hear’s” a thought, to end my rant: Create an International Noise Awareness Day. Or even Month. Put your noisy machines away for just a moment or three and listen to my words. What’s that you say? I can’t hear you…

Let’s not get soaked by poorly planned transit I raIse an issue about a proposal for “at-grade light rail” for Surrey not
to scuttle any plans for rapid transit, but to alert those who are advocating such a system to a potential problem that needs to be considered. While holidaying in San Diego a couple of years ago and being a rail fan I took the San Diego light rail line from the downtown area out to El Cajon and back. The El Cajon line is a mixture of at-grade in the downtown section and elevated rail in the eastern section near El Cajon. The trip east was uneventful; however, when travelling back west and as we approached the at-grade section along Commercial Street it started to rain, flooding the track. Rain can cause a problem for atgrade light rail and that’s exactly what it did that day in San Diego. Travelling on Commercial Street when it’s flooded as the driver explained to me, the train is limited to travelling at 8 km/h. On a dry day, the train could travel at a faster speed and a sensor on the overhead power line would turn a red light green so the train didn’t have to stop at a cross street. Forced to travel slowly, the green light turned back red before we could get there, necessitating a stop at each intersection thus slowing travel time significantly. This normally isn’t a problem in San Diego with their usual dry weather but could be a major one in the Lower Mainland. Surrey needs to start planning for the future and rapid transit will be a key to our success as a viable city. Let’s not engineer a system that could be plagued with problems due to our wet weather.

Police are trying
to piece together the events that led up to a dramatic five-car accident on the weekend. On Saturday at about 2 p.m., Surrey RCMP responded to an accident at 140 Street and 78A Avenue. It took investigators some time to figure out how many vehicles were involved because many of them were in pieces, police say. Four people were taken to hospital, one of them with potential lifethreatening injuries. Alcohol may be a factor in the accident, but that won’t be known until the investigation runs its course.

Anita Huberman, CEO of Surrey Board of Trade, Marc DeSerres, president of DeSerres, Harry Bains, former MLA Surrey-Newton and Marvin Hunt, Surrey city councillor, were on hand for the official opening of a new DeSerres store in King George Boulevard.
The Canadian arts and crafts retail chain DeSerres opened a new store in Surrey last month – its 31st in Canada and third in B.C. – and celebrated its official grand opening Thursday (May 9). The $1.8 million, 10,000 square foot store is located at 7635 King George Boulevard and will create 15 jobs. DeSerres, a family-owned company, has been a leading retailer of arts and crafts supplies in Canada for more than 100 years. Marc DeSerres, president of DeSerres and the third-generation family member to head the company, says: “We have created a new store concept to help serve young families in the area and allow customers of all ages to satisfy their desire to learn, create and discover. We hope that DeSerres will be a place that the people of Surrey and its surroundings go to be inspired and to find a variety of products for children and adults alike. After all, we are all young at art.”

Abuser’s jail time upheld But child-sex offender can no longer be named
by Sheila Reynolds A four-yeAr jail sen-
tence handed to a man convicted of sexually abusing a Surrey boy over several years will stand. But the B.C. Court of Appeal reduced restrictions on the offender’s future contact with children under 16. As is usually the case, there is a publication ban on any information that could identify the victim. However, while the offender, identified as R.R.B., has been named many times in past media coverage, the May 9 appeal decision states there is now also a ban on using his full name. While there is often a ban on the name of an offender if they are related to the victim, Madam Justice Jo-Ann Prowse decided that in this case, because the victim was a friend of the family, it was best not to use anyone’s full name. The admitted child molester was sentenced last August after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a minor. He appealed his sentence, which also included a 20-year ban on being anywhere – parks, schools, pools – children under age 16 may be present. It also banned him from using a computer to com-
municate with anyone under 16 or working or volunteering with kids. During the appeal hearing last month, R.R.B.’s lawyer argued the ban was particularly harsh as it barred the offender from seeing his own children. Justice Prowse agreed, calling the two-decade prohibition “excessive” in the circumstances. “…such a period of prohibition would usually be reserved for the worst case offender, and there are, unfortunately, many
offenders far worse than R.R.B.” Further, she said, there was “no basis” for the ban to apply to communication between R.R.B. and his children. She lifted the ban on public places entirely and reduced the prohibition on working with kids or using a computer to communicate with them to three years. The computer ban, however, does not apply to the offender’s own children. During trial, the court heard that R.R.B. began
sexually assaulting the victim when he was about nine. The abuse ended when the boy was 14 and his mother discovered sexually explicit texts on his cellphone. Medical experts deemed the offender was not a pedophile, instead attributing his behaviour to emotional immaturity, neediness and an extreme need to please others. He was considered a low risk to reoffend. Still, his four-year jail sentence was upheld.

Police investigate two Surrey shootings Two men are in hospital
this week after two
separate shootings on the weekend. One of the incidents involved a Surrey RCMP officer and is being probed by the Independent Investigations Office (IIO). On Saturday (May 11) at about 7:30 p.m., Surrey RCMP officers responded to a call at the Scott Road SkyTrain Station after reports of a man threatening passengers with a knife. During a confrontation with police, the man was shot. He was taken to hospital, where he
remained as of Monday morning. The IIO was immediately notified and a team has been assigned to investigate. At 11 p.m. that same night, police were called to a shooting near Mac’s Convenience Store at 132 Street and 104 Avenue. Police discovered a man with multiple injuries to the face, neck and chest. He was taken to hospital in serious condition, but has been stabilized. Police say he is not being cooperative.

The revitalization bylaw is intended to encourage investment in commercial and mixed-use renewal projects, to promote public use, and to encourage sustainable development. The tax exemption program is available for a maximum period of three years for the following eligible projects: • A commercial or mixed-use building with a construction value of $5 million or more. • A mixed-use development on land previously used for commercial purposes only. • Projects which involve the preservation and enhancement of heritage buildings. The amount of municipal property tax exemption for an eligible project is equal to the difference in taxable value of land and improvements, assessed by the British Columbia Assessment Authority, on a parcel between the calendar year prior to the start of construction and the year in which the Tax Exemption Certificate is issued. If an eligible project also qualifies as ‘low environmental impact’ (scoring at least 70 points on the Environmental Impact Rating Form), reduced development cost charges are applicable as follows: • 70% reduction for commercial or mixed-use building development with a construction value of $5 million or more. • 70% reduction for mixed-use development on land previously used for commercial purposes only. • 50% reduction for projects which involve the preservation and enhancement of heritage buildings. RCMP helping collect unused prescription drugs
by Kevin Diakiw This week Surrey
RCMP is accepting prescription drugs from families looking to offload unwanted pharmaceuticals, which are often misused by youth in the home. According to a 2009 study, one-fifth of students in Grades 7-12 have used at least one prescription drug without a doctor’s prescription, police say. Often those medications were stolen from a medicine cabinet or a pharmacy, or obtained through a fake prescription or drug trafficker. So until May 17, the Surrey RCMP will be accepting unwanted or unused prescriptions during regular hours at the front counter of the main detachment (14355 57 Ave.), no questions asked. The RCMP also wants to use this opportunity to ensure the public is aware of B.C.’s Medications Return Program, which has been in place since 1996. B.C. residents can take expired or
unused medications back to pharmacies across the province at no charge, on an ongoing basis. Surrey RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet said it’s a good initiative. “(It’s) a great program,” Paquet said, adding police see what happens when prescription drugs
are consumed inappropriately. “We do get a number of calls on an annual basis as it relates to mishandled medication or prescription drugs falling into the wrong hands, or being taken for the wrong reasons. “Any initiative
that promotes the safe disposal of these prescription drugs and medication, making our community safer, is welcome by us.” The public is asked not to drop off medication outside of the detachment building for public safety reasons.

Brother act with the Lions Sean McGarva tells brother Matt of CFL draft choice
by Rick Kupchuk
W
orking as a coordinator of community relations with the B.C. Lions, Sean McGarva though it would be nice if his brother could play for the Canadian Football League (CFL) team. But being the one to make the call to Windsor, Ontario to tell Matt McGarva he had been drafted by the Lions was even nicer. Sean was working in the Lions’ office in Whalley Monday afternoon, when general manager and vice-president of football operations Wally Buono walked by. “He asked me, if Matt was available when the Lions next pick came up, if I would be willing to announce the pick to the league,” said Sean. “And I agreed.” Matt McGarva, a Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary graduate who went on to a four-year career with the Windsor Lancers of Canadian Intercollegiate Sports (CIS), was chosen in the fourth round, 33rd overall by the Lions in Monday’s CFL Draft. And it was his brother who made the call to the 6’, 197-lb. defensive back in Southern Ontario, informing him he had been drafted by B.C. “(Lions draft coordinator) Kelly Bates called his number, and handed me his cellphone,” said Sean. “But Kelly has a Saskatchewan cell number. So I’m sure Matt saw it (on call display) and said, ‘shoot, it’s Saskatchewan.’ “He answered the phone, and I said, ‘Hi, Matt. It’s me.’ And he said ‘who?’ ” Sean then proudly announced to the Canadian Football League that the Lions selected his brother Matt, who – after getting over the surprise of the phone call – quickly began celebrating with his coaches. “They went nuts,” said Sean, smiling. It was expected Matt McGarva would be claimed in Monday’s draft. And while he was hoping to go to the team he cheered for as a youngster, there are no guarantees. “He interviewed with seven teams,” said Sean. “So there was a lot of interest. I knew he was on the (Lions’) radar, but you never know.” Matt was a second-team allCanadian in 2011 after finishing the season with 48 tackles and one touchdown. The business major earned a second-straight OUA (Ontario Universities Athletics) all-star nod last fall in his final year of eligibility with Windsor, despite playing just four games. In his final season, Matt was credited with 20 solo tackles, four assisted tackles and one interception which was returned for 20 yards. “I am extremely proud and excited for Matt, especially since B.C. is his hometown team and he

He led the Panthers defensively,
making 54 tackles and intercepting a pair of passes to lead the team in both categories. After four years at Windsor, the Lions coaching staff predicts Matt will not only crack the roster of the pro team, but will excel. “He will do quite well,” said Mark Washington, the Lions’ defensive
backs coach. “He’s a smart young man. A great athlete. He works really hard. “Watching his film, I think he will convert to our system quite well. He’s physical enough, he’s big enough, he’s strong enough. I think he’s going to be a great player for us.”

Three of six local girls high school soccer teams participating in the Fraser Valley Senior AAA tournament are still in contention for a berth at the B.C. championships later this month in North Vancouver. The Panorama Ridge Thunder are the closest to qualifying for the provincial championships, needing just one more victory to secure one of five berths from the Fraser Valley. The Thunder, seeded eighth in the 16-team Fraser Valley tournament, advanced to the semifinal round with a 2-1 overtime win over the topseed Fleetwood Park Dragons Thursday. Panorama Ridge hosted the 12-seed South Delta Sun Devils yesterday (Monday) in a semifinal game. The winner advanced to the provincial tournament, and will play for the Fraser Valley zone championship Thursday. Even with a loss yesterday, the Thunder will play Wednesday and Thursday, needing one win to qualify for the provincials. Fleetwood Park and the Clayton Heights Nightriders are the other two local schools chasing a berth at the provincials. After they were upset by Panorama Ridge, the Dragons eliminated the Enver Creek Cougars 4-0 on Friday afternoon. Seeded ninth, Clayton Heights won for the second time in three starts Friday, traveling to Chilliwack to edged the third-ranked Chilliwack Storm 1-0. The Nightriders played host to the Heritage Woods Kodiaks yesterday, needing a win to stay alive. The Queen Elizabeth Royals were also eliminated Friday, falling 5-0 to the Elgin Park Orcas. On Thursday, the Royals got goals from Jasmine Johal and Pam Dhillon and a shutout from Danielle Dobson in a 2-0 win over the Delta Pacers. The North Surrey Spartans bowed out of the competition Thursday, losing 3-1 to the Cougars at Enver Creek Secondary.

Eagles get first win in PEI Surrey blanks Truro at RBC Cup tournament in Summerside
by Nick Greenizan
Demico Hannoun
picked a fine time for his first playoff hat trick. The 17-year-old forward scored three times – including twice on the power play – and added an assist, and linemate Michael Stenerson scored once and added four helpers, as the Surrey Eagles clobbered the Truro Bearcats 7-0 in their first game of the RBC Cup Sunday afternoon in Summerside, P.E.I. “He’s a shooter, he’s a skilled player. He found a nice spot there on the power play and had a two good one-timers,” said Surrey Eagles coach Matt Erhart, when asked about Hannoun’s performance. The key early in the game was the success of the Surrey power play. The Bearcats took three penalties in the first 15 minutes, and the BC Hockey League (BCHL) champions made them pay each time, jumping out to a 3-0 lead. The three-goal barrage chased Truro’s starting netminder Shayne Campbell to the bench, in favour of backup Jacob Fancy. “We had a good start, got on the power play early, and got a couple key goals,” said Stenerson, who recently signed a scholarship agreement with the University of Vermont. “I got lucky with a couple of those assists, but I’ll take it.” As one might expect in a seven-goal blowout, Stenerson and Hannoun were not the only Birds with big games. Brady Shaw scored twice and added an assist, Craig Wyszmirski had a two-point game, and blue-liner Devon Toews – who was MVP of the Western Canada Cup – had two assists. Stefan Burzan also had a goal to round out the scoring. Michael Santaguida picked up his sixth shutout of the playoffs, stopping all 24 Truro shots he faced. “We had lots of guys who played well tonight,” Erhart said. And despite not playing for a week, and traveling the further of any of the five RBC teams, the Eagles showed neither rust nor signs of jet lag Sunday, in what was the second official day of the RBC tournament.
“We really stressed using our team speed, and we came out with good jump,” Erhart said. “We played a complete game, and we were dominant on the power play, especially in the first period. We competed for pucks, had good second and third efforts.” The only negative in the win was that centre Adam Tambellini did not finish the game. The six-foot-four Edmonton native – acquired by the Eagles at the BCHL trade deadline last January – took a hard hit in the second period and did not finish the game. Erhart, however, expected him to be fine,
and said his late-game absence had more to do with the score than the severity of Tambellini’s injury.
“We really stressed using our team speed, and we came out with a good jump.” Matt Erhart “I think he’s fine. It was precautionary, with the way the score was,” Erhart said. “I suspect

he’ll be fine and ready to go (Monday) night.” Sunday’s win was the Eagles’ first in Summerside since losing the final of the 1997 RBC Cup to the Summerside Western Capitals. The Capitals, the tournament’s host club, were the Eagles’ second opponent of this year’s tournament Monday night. The game was played after The Leader’s press deadline. The Western Capitals were also 1-0 heading into the game, having opened the national junior ‘A’ hockey tournament Saturday with a 5-1 win over the Minnesota Wilderness, who were champions of the

Paradise for birdwatchers Delta’s teeming with feathers of all forms this spring Black Press

here’s never been shortage of targets for birdwatchers in Delta. Warmer weather makes it easy to head out and to spot bald eagles around the landfill, the great
blue heron rookery near the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal (don’t get too close, please) or the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary on Westham Island. Just make sure you head out before the heat because birds lose their feathers – and their colour – when they molt during the summer.
A great blue heron makes its way back home with building material for its nest at a rookery near the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal. The rookery has hundreds of birds overlooking the shoreline, just south of Highway 17.
