Warning: If you have already voted, or plan to vote, the following column is not for you. You are awesome and deserve a box of eclairs delivered to your front door. For those not going to vote, please keep reading. Once again, it is time to vote for the party candidate of your choice in a provincial election. And once again, it is nearly time for this writer’s post-election frustration with those phantoms who decide not to exercise their democratic right to vote. I say phantoms because while around 50 per cent of the registered voters didn’t vote in the last election, I’ve yet to meet someone who actually admitted to staying away from the polls. Perhaps no one has confessed to me that they didn’t vote because of the derision in my voice as I expressed my exasperation, or it was just because of the shame they felt. In any case, I decided to try a little research
into why people would not vote and decided to focus on two sources; a BC Stats demographic research paper and a Statistics Canada paper on the low 2011 federal turnout. The BC Stats paper found that older individuals, people with a higher income and education were more apt to vote than poorer and less educated individuals, new immigrants and especially the young, (2034), a group that stayed away in droves. Federally, the two prime reasons people gave for not voting were: 1) Not interested (27 per cent) and 2) Too busy (23 per cent). Now this is a highly encapsulated look at the research into this problem. People who are a lot smarter than I have been looking at this problem for many years and are still scratching their heads. Just speaking with people over the years, I hear that people are upset with the basic first-past-the-post system, the geographical ridings and most of all, the politicians
themselves. The old joke “How can you tell if a politician is lying? — Their lips are moving,” is rarely greeted with chuckles anymore but instead a sigh and a grave nod of the head. But that is not the point. Not voting gives tacit approval to those who want to game the system. Not voting gives those with their own ideologies permission to pursue them at our cost. Not voting is like smiling and nodding when served bad food. You have no one to blame but yourself when you get served that same swill later. Voting, on the other hand, gives you a say in how you want your taxes spent. Voting lets you tell a politician that they are either great or that they screwed up royaly. Lastly, voting keeps democracy alive. Rich or poor, young or old, one vote per person is our society’s greatest equalizer and we are lucky beyond measure to live in a country where it is possible at all.
This tax will be applied regardless of how profitable the credit union is. While other provinces in Canada apply a capital tax on business, cooperative enterprises such as credit unions, are exempted from the tax. As we understand this proposal, the cost to Kootenay Savings will be roughly $780,000 per year and will continue to increase annually as our capital base increases. This is a significant cost that will
ultimately be borne by our members, our communities and our employees, as it will have to be paid from income that would otherwise be shared with our members, contributed to community organizations or paid in salaries and benefits. We sincerely hope that the NDP will reconsider this proposed tax on Credit Unions should they form the next Provincial Government.
Tax proposal wrong-headed by Brent Tremblay, President and CEO, Kootenay Savings Credit Union

Home Improvement and Renovations How safe is your retaining wall?
Photo Submitted
Menno Dueck.
by Menno Dueck “Who built this retaining wall?” is the question that Grant, a veteran backhoe operator wants to know. Why? It was this incorrectly built wall that could have badly injured him or even cost him his life. Frank’s retaining wall (built by a previous owner) was 8 feet high and 10 feet long and held back the front yard, supported one end of the deck and butted up to the house. With
that much height, there was plenty of room to stand under the deck on the gravel bed. The story begins when Grant gets a call to locate a broken water main line which enters Frank’s house under the deck, near the corner of the house and retaining wall. The backhoe is small enough to work under the deck to do the initial dig and Grant piles the excavated gravel and soil away from the retaining wall. Grant, using best practices, is doing the final excavation by hand when he hears an unfamiliar sound. The hair goes up on the back of his neck as instinct sets in; he leaps out of the excavated hole and scrambles up onto the dirt pile as the retaining wall collapses right where he had been digging. When the dust settles and Grant’s adrenalin levels return to normal he is shocked at what he sees. The retaining
wall had been basically “free standing” as it had not been attached to the house foundation at all. It had been built on footings, but the footings were sitting on soil that had not been properly compacted. The combination of water seeping into the ground from the broken pipe and the excavation work increased the instability of the wall and was the “straw that broke the camels back”…in this case it could have been Grant’s back. The previous homeowner had hired a
friend of a friend to help build the wall. It’s obvious they really had no clue of how to do it properly. And because they did not apply for a permit there were no inspections done. So…do you know who built your retaining wall? (Based on a true story, names changed) For more information, call Dueck Enterprises Inc. at 250-426-5460 or visit www.dueckenteprises.com.

European styling and peppy handling in the VW CC
Style, handling and power combine with fuel efficiency in the 2013 VW CC. Overall: The buttoneddown face of VW has been inherited by its sleek ‘n’ sexy coupe wannabe. Drivetrain: Last years 200-horsepower turbo-four and 280-horse V6 remain with us. Right off the bat, let’s deal with the controversial side of Volkswagen’s refreshening of its coupe-like CC. The Euro-styled nosepiece, hood and headlights attached to previous models beginning with the 2009 versions are arguably more appealing than the 2013 edition’s. As a result, the CC now has more in common with its Passat sedan stablemate. Fortunately, the car’s signature fastback roofline remains the same sensuous shape as before. It might not be as practi-
cal as the Passat and other mid-size sedan contenders, but it sure looks cool and the CC’s continuing styling individuality is to be lauded. Once inside, the most noticeable change is a rear seat that is now a true bench design with a splitfolding 60:40 seat back, instead of the original two bucket-seat-style arrangement separated by a handy storage compartment. The rest of the interior remains essentially unaltered, which is to say it exudes a premium look that’s wholly in keeping with the car’s upscale demeanor. The base 200-horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder connects to your choice of a six-speed manual transmission, or a six-speed direct shift (automated-manual)
PHOTO SUBMITTED
gearbox (DSG). This option is designed to produce rapid-fire gear changes that make it fun and fuelefficient to use. For extra performance there’s an available 280-horsepower 3.6-litre V6 with six-speed automatic transmission and standard 4Motion allwheel-drive. The three trims for Canada are the Sportline, Highline and Highline V6. Depending on the model, available features include a premium stereo with in-dash CD changer, leatherette (not the real stuff) seat covers and a sport suspension. Premium models include dual-zone climate control and a sunroof.
Large and roomy, the 2013 Suburban fits your family needs
Size does matter, but so does style, horsepower and room in the 2013 Suburban. Overall: Big ‘burb-ute? Well, isn’t broken, don’t fix it . . Drivetrain: Three gasoline V8 engines carry over; a single-speed transfer case is now standard with fourwheel-drive while a twospeed transfer case with a low range is optional. Well, colour us surprised. Seeing as the Chevrolet Suburban shares many things with its Silverado siblings, it comes as no surprise that technologies pioneered on one will eventually catch up with the rest. So we (wrongly) figured that all the tweaks and changes made to the popular pickup would show up on the 2013 model. Its age doesn’t affect its popularity, though. Similar to the handsome — but slightly small-
er — Tahoe, the Suburban, gets the job done with a base 310-horsepower 5.3-litre V8 or an optional aluminum-block 366-horsepower 6.0-litre V8. Heavy-duty (2500-series) models get an iron-block version of the 6.0 rated at 352 horsepower that’s backed by a new six-speed automatic transmission. As before, both light- and heavy-duty models are available in two- or four-wheel-drive. Livable fuel-burning performance — saying fuel “economy” is a bit of a stretch when it comes to any full-size pickup/sport ute, no matter who builds it — comes via Active Fuel Management (AFM) that shuts down half the 5.3’s cylinders under light-load and cruising situations. The aluminum 6.0
PHOTO SUBMITTED
also gets the AFM treatment (4x2 models only) as well as variable-valve timing. Inside, seating flexibility is the order of the day where you can choose three bench seats (for a nine-person capacity) or three rows of two high-back bucket seats (for a total of six) or a combination thereof. To transport bulky items requires removing the third row and folding and tumbling the second row into the floor (power function is an available option). Looking for a little bling? How about a set of 20-inch chrome wheels available on up-level trims.

Create your journey College of the Rockies believes in letting you create your journey. Whether this means completing an entire program at the College, starting your educational journey here before transferring to university or taking online courses while working and taking care of your family, College of the Rockies wants to help you find the path that works for you. Why not be a student for a day and try out a few programs that interest you to see which one is the best fit for you or come for a guided tour to check out what the campus has to offer? College of the Rockies’ Student Ambassadors are happy to help you navigate the halls. Our Student Services department offers education advising, Aboriginal services, disability services, study skills workshops and more to help you from the time you enter the College until you complete your last credit. With programs including Adult Basic Education, University Studies, Business Administration, Child, Youth and Family Studies, Tourism, Kinesiology, Trades, Health Care and Bachelor Degrees, College of the Rockies has everything you need for your educational journey, right in your own backyard. Studies show that students who enter college before university get better grades and are more likely to finish their studies than those who enter university directly from secondary school. In addition, transfer agreements between College of the Rockies and a variety of universities allow you to transfer all or most of the credits earned at College of the Rockies to a program at another institution. For more information on College of the Rockies, go to: www.cotr. bc.ca, email: ask@cotr. bc.ca or phone (250) 489-8243.

Sustainable higher education College of the Rockies has recently become a member of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). Through membership in AASHE, the College will receive support in advancing its sustainability initiatives throughout the institution and in the community. College of the Rockies’ Business Program Coordinator, Greg McCallum says, “Membership in the AASHE is a logical fit with the sustainability focus of our Bachelor of Business Administration in Sustainable Business Practices degree program and of College of the Rockies as a whole. Membership provides us with many valuable resources to help the College continue the sustainability movement on our campuses.” Sustainability is defined by AASHE in an inclusive way, encompassing human and ecological health, social justice, secure livelihoods and a better world for all generations. AASHE enables higher education institutions to meet their sustainability goals by providing specialized resources, professional development, and a network of peer support. Membership covers every individual at an institution so the entire campus community can take advantage of member benefits. AASHE is an association of colleges and universities that are working to create a sustainable future. Better Off With Bill • On May 14th, we can choose to continue in a positive direction, with low taxes, a balanced budget, a growing economy and a strong independent MLA who puts us first. • Or, we can choose to go back to the NDP. The NDP say they will raise your taxes, will not balance the budget, but will spend an additional $3 billion of your money. Their record is one of economic failure. Their leader has proven he cannot be trusted.
