Couple lives with challenge of multiple sclerosis By Treena Mielke Brenda and Scott Clelland are living proof opposites attract. She likes people and creating beautiful crafts. He likes music and sports. The two, however, do have one thing in common; one thing they never in a million years would have suspected would affect them both, changing the course of their lives. The Clellands both have multiple sclerosis, a disease affecting the central nervous system, causing serious symptoms and major lifestyle adjustments. Sitting in a sunny sitting room in the long-term care centre in Rimbey, the couple tells their story, chatting

easily like people do who have been married for a long time, been through lots together, and still manage to keep on smiling. Brenda, a gentle, soft-spoken lady, was diagnosed with the disease in the spring of 1997. She worked as a dispatcher in Grande Prairie when the tests revealed her blurry vision, cognitive confusion, numbness and extreme fatigue was caused by relapsing, remitting multiple sclerosis. Despite the diagnosis, Brenda and Scott were married July 26 of that same year. “I knew he would always be there for me no matter what,” said Clelland. “I knew he would always make sure my needs were always met.” Continued on page 15

Get the facts on library issue By Treena Mielke Rimbey citizens will have an opportunity to get clear on the facts regarding a proposed library expansion at an upcoming public meeting. The meeting, May 22 at 6:30 p.m. in the Rimbey Community Centre, will provide information as to why the library needs to move, costs involved and potential sites. “There’s a lot of misinformation floating around,” said librarian Jean Keetch. “We really want people to get the facts.” Keetch said there is a misconception among the public as to where the library can move. “People keep thinking we can move to all sorts of places. We can’t,” she said. She said it has been suggested the library could move into Al Inglis’s building on the south side of Main Street. However, she explained the 4,000 square-foot building is too small. “It is nowhere near the space we need,” she said. The library cannot move to the top floor of the Provincial Building or the community centre due to regulations regarding the structure of the foundation. There is space at the Co-op, she noted, but at $60,000 a year for rent, it is too expensive.

She said renovations could be made to the town office to accommodate the library for under $5,000. “We didn’t get a grant we had applied for, but we always had a plan B. It would be an inefficient manager not to have a plan B.” Keetch encourages the public to come to the meeting. “It will be a better way to get information than from letters to the editor written by people who have their own agenda.”

American anti-terrorism policy drones on John Bellinger is the last person in Washington you’d expect to criticize President Barack Obama for making too many drone strikes. It was he who drafted the (rather unconvincing) legal justification for targeted drone killings when he was legal adviser to the Secretary of State in George W. Bush’s second administration, and he still supports them. But he went ahead and criticized Obama anyway. Speaking at a conference in Washington on May 1, Bellinger said: “This government has decided that instead of detaining members of al-Qaeda (at Guantanamo), they are going to kill them.” Weirdly, this accusation has a certain plausibility. President Obama wants to close the US prison camp in Cuba where hundreds of suspected supporters of al-Qaeda have been held without charge, some for more almost a decade. There are still 166 prisoners at Guantanamo and Obama, having been thwarted by Congress in his first-term pledge to close the place, recently announced his intention to try again with the new Congress. Why did John Bellinger, of all people, then accuse Obama of using drones too often? The US president certainly does seem to like them: the vast majority of the 370 US drone attacks, killing an es-

timated 3,500 people, have been carried out on his watch. According to Bellinger, it’s because Obama knows that if he can’t send the evil-doers to Guantanamo, his only alternative is to kill them with drone strikes. So what we actually have here is an unusually subtle Republican argument: if you don’t like the drone strikes (because they kill lots of innocent people), then you should keep Guantanamo open. But subtle is not the same as valid. There are two unstated assumptions at the heart of this argument. One is that the US could just capture the people it suspects of being al-Qaeda supporters by conventional means and lock them away in Guantanamo. No fuss, no muss and no innocent victims. That’s ridiculous: the United States cannot arrest alleged al-Qaeda supporters in the wilds of Yemen or Afghanistan and spirit them away to Guantanamo. If it doesn’t target them with drones, then most of them will go on living. But you can’t just

Library issue needs two questions answered Dear Editor: Most of the time I enjoy living in a small town; I can still take my dog out in the back lane late at night without fear of being bashed over the head but sometimes living in a small town can be downright frustrating and annoying. That is when a bunch of amateurs are about to make major decisions that affect a lot of people. Take this library plebiscite for example: I am being asked to vote on a question that has two things intrinsically intertwined.

I am a firm believer in and supporter of public libraries but I am also vehemently opposed to have the Rimbey town hall being relocated to the Provincial Building. So, why can I not vote Yes to the library expansion and No to the relocation of the town hall to the Provincial Building? A town hall belongs as much as possible in the centre of town. As the question is phrased as reported, I will have no choice but to vote No. Edo Deweert

This brings us to the second unstated assumption: that if all those dangerous people had been allowed to live, then there would have been hundreds of terrorist attacks against the United States. Or at least dozens. OK then, how about a couple? Probably not even one. After all, there were no drone strikes for the first three years after the 9/11 attacks in 2001 because the technology was not yet available. Yet even then there was not one further terrorist attack on the United States. The link between drone strikes and possible terrorist attacks on the United States is purely rhetorical. Never mind. The whole argument is moot. Obama won’t get the Republican majority in the House of Representatives to go along with closing Guantanamo this time either. And he won’t stop the drone strikes because he needs to be seen by the American public to be doing something “positive” as he brings the American troops home from another needless and lost war. There is not one iota of strategic thinking in any of this. It’s all about American domestic politics, as the response to 9/11 has been from the beginning. Get facts on library Dear Editor: Once again there has been misinformation given to the public under the guise of a letter to the editor. Unfortunately there are few places in Rimbey suitable for a library; most have insufficient space and all but one has been deemed cost prohibitive by town council. The idea that when town administration moves to the Provincial Building the east side of the building will remain empty is ludicrous. True, the library board does not have the money at this time to renovate, however, that would not stop us from making use of the space. There are several inexpensive changes we could make

immediately that would give us more programming space, storage space, shelving space and workspace. These changes would not be esthetically pleasing but they would be practical and make the library a safer place for patrons and staff Whatever your opinion or however you plan to vote, I ask you to make an informed decision. The library board is hosting a town hall style information session on May 22 at the community centre at 6:30 p.m. Please come to ask your questions and then make an informed decision. Missoula Children’s Theatre and Bentley students perform By Amelia Naismith Bentley’s students and Missoula Children’s Theatre recently staged a rendition of The Secret Garden solid enough to carry the play’s classic and famous origins. Missoula Children’s Theatre is a production company that sends creative theatre teams around the world to spend one week in different communities and use that short amount of time to build an entire play. This year Grace McGeoch and Vicky Seigrist, both tour actors and directors, worked with the Bentley’s youths. They were amazed at the actors’ ability to handle the long rehearsals and challenges that accompany staging the production. “The kids are just really on it. They’re working really hard and they’re just very expressive,” said McGeoch. The directors agreed the rehearsals went so smoothly because of the dedication the students poured into the play. Seigrist says each rehearsal was a higher notch on the scale, despite unusual circumstances. “This whole week we haven’t been

able to be on stage. We’ve been practicing in different spaces, small spaces but the kids have adapted very well,” said Seigrist. McGeoch felt the students were able to handle the play because of their mature approach to hard work and their vocal abilities. A portion of the maturity came from Bentley’s Missoula veterans. Student Savanna Spendiff, who played Mary Lennox, has been in every Missoula production at the school for the past 10 years. “I like acting, I love it.” Spendiff said Missoula is a good opportunity for those who enjoy acting to experience it year after year in the limited environment of a small school. Lyndsey Grutterink, who played Dickon, is another long-time Missoula fan. She’s been acting in the productions for nine years. She may be in it for her acting abilities and love of spending the time with friends; Grutterink isn’t blind to the hard work put forth to make the opportunity possible for her and the other students. “It’s pretty crazy to see ho much work Vicky and Grace put into this.”

Fire Chief John Weisgerber said it has been a busy time with several grass fires burning in the area. Due to more than one call coming in at the same time, firemen have found themselves spread thin, trying to be on the scene of each and every fire. “Some of the guys are getting pretty tired,” Weisgerber said. Rimbey Fire Department fought a grass fire May 6 south of the Rimbey gas plant from 2 p.m. until 2 a.m. and were back later Tuesday as the fire rekindled itself. “It was a big fire. There was limited access and it was very hard to get it under control,” he said, adding the Ponoka Fire Department helped control the blaze. He noted some of Rimbey’s firefighters were also trying to control a couple of other grass fires burning at the same time, thereby limiting the manpower at the scene. He said it has been a busy year for the department but not the busiest in history. He recalled one year the firemen were called to 11 fires in one day. Weisberger cautions the public to exercise extreme caution when dealing with outdoor fires, due to the extremely dry conditions. “Rain would be nice,” he said. “It is that time of year.”

Former bully tearful about past mistakes By Treena Mielke “Hey, fatty. Get off this trampoline, fatty. It only holds so much weight.” “Fatty, fatty, fatty,” the girls taunted, their words keeping rhythm as they continued to bounce up and down. Tanya slowly dropped to hands and knees and crawled away, keeping her head down, trying, no doubt, to make herself as small as possible. She slid to the ground and disappeared into the evening, the girl’s taunting words ringing in her ears. She wished the earth would open up and swallow her. She wished a truck would suddenly swerve out and hit her. Mostly, she wished she were dead. “I remember her,” recalled Jamie, now married and the mother of two. “She was in my class at school and she was overweight so she was a natural target for teasing.” “Was I a bully?” The young mother’s eyes fill with tears as she flips back over time to her own high school years. “I didn’t think I was a bully at the time,” she said. “But I was confident and I had lots of friends and sometimes I said things and my friends said things that were cruel and mean.” For Jamie, high school was fun, lots of fun. There were dates with good looking guys, cool friends to hang out with and parties to go to. High school offered a chance to flirt with being all grown up, knowing full well mom and dad were there should she decide to go back to being a kid again. Jamie wore her confidence as easily as

her school jacket and her boyfriend’s class ring. In spite of it all, Jamie remembers a few moments she would just as soon forget. “I had my head stuck in the toilet one time,” she said. “Yes, I definitely had a few times like that. I remember these boys in my class making fun of me and me being all embarrassed because I had these warts on my hands. I remember they even drew pictures on the blackboard of these hands covered in warts and put my name under it.” Jamie shook her head and smiled wryly at the memory. “I was confident, though, and those boys, they never had any power over me. I guess they knew that. For some reason they knew that.” Now a counsellor, Jamie deals regularly with bullying issues and feels she has an understanding of the issue, not only from the perspective of the person being bullied, but from the bully’s as well. “Bullying gives you a sense of power. And I don’t think a bully has an understanding of how devastating their words or actions can be to someone else. “Bullies look at people as objects, not someone with feelings whom they can kill with their words or actions.” Bullying can take many forms, Jamie said. “Laughing at people’s expense, teasing that goes a little too far, making fun of someone, even sarcasm.” Adults need to teach their children about the devastating effects of bullying and they also need to be careful about what they

say in front of their children. “They shouldn’t have adult conversations in front of their kids,” Jamie said. Parents who fear their children are being bullied need to let them know the bullies do not have power over them. “Help them not to identify themselves as victims. Be there for them and love them and get in their face if you need to. Let them know they are not alone.” “According to questionnaires distributed at events held during National Victims of Crime Awareness Week, bullying is a very real concern in Rimbey. Janet Porter, Rimbey Victim Services co-ordinator, said about 89 per cent of the people who responded to the questionnaires said bullying is a problem here and 71 per cent said their children had been bullied. According to Wikipedia, bullying is the use of force or coercion to abuse or intimidate others. The behavior can be habitual and involve an imbalance of social or physical power. It can include verbal harassment or threat, physical assault or coercion and may be directed repeatedly towards particular victims, perhaps on grounds of race, religion, gender, sexuality or ability. If bullying is done by a group, it is called mobbing. The victim of bullying is sometimes referred to as a target. Bullying consists of emotional, verbal and physical abuse and ranges from simple one-on-one bullying to more complex bullying in which the bullying in which others help the bully in his or her activities. Bullying in school and the workplace is also referred to as peer abuse. Students who are experiencing bullying need to talk to a trusted adult such as their teacher, their parents or the family/school liaison worker. Serving Victoria a page turner until the very end The handsome prince weds the beautiful princess, dragons are slain, wicked witches become dust, peasants rejoice, and they all live, well, you know what comes next. But maybe you’re wrong. Maybe scandal Terri comes next, or war, disease, death. Only the serSchlichenmeyer vants know for sure, and The Bookworm in the new book Serving Victoria by Kate Hubbard, they were quite willing to tell. When Alexandrina Victoria became Queen of England in 1837, she inherited a court filled with impropriety, which scandalized the young woman. Though she ultimately retained some of her uncle’s court, she needed to appoint her own ladies in waiting, maids of honour, nursery attendants, physicians and other personal staff. Members of her court were required to have a sense of duty, discretion and high morals. Most of them would come from British aristocracy. While writing a children’s book on the Queen, Kate Hubbard came across collections of letters and diaries written by members of Victoria’s entourage — penned notes that detailed life inside the Monarchy, including daily drudgery and isolation. Hubbard also found gossip that gives modern Anglophiles an intimate peek at the Queen, her husband, uncles and other members of the Royal Family. Working for the Queen seems like it would be an honor, but it was, in truth, dull and dreary: evenings, for instance, consisted of stiff dinner conversation followed by two hours of small talk. The Queen was said to be somewhat immature and loud, often “showing her gums.” More than one blue-blooded palace employee thought Victoria and Albert were the 19th century equivalents of trailer trash. Still, despite mindnumbing duties, palace life wasn’t horrid. Queen Victoria never became friends with her female attendants but she became “close” to some of them and was a generous gift-giver. Though the Queen notoriously kept drawing rooms and bedrooms at 40 degrees F or less, court members were well-fed and safely sheltered. They also got decent (for the time) salaries. Yes, there were scandals within the monarchy. There were births and deaths (it was said that the Queen was never happier than when planning a funeral). There were romances, public and imagined. And there were fights, inside both the British Empire and the palace walls.

So you’re hooked on a show about a certain Abbey? You’re a rabid Anglophile, long live the Queen? Then I’m sure you’re already itching for Serving Victoria.

And for good reason: the Victoria Age comes alive with author Kate Hubbard’s findings, taking us behind brocaded curtains and inside bedchambers to learn delicious tidbits about a woman who’s been dead more than a century, but still remains fascinating. I thoroughly enjoyed how Hubbard lays down a cheeky, gossipy tone; she’s chatty, but without offend-

ing the sensibilities of historians, who will likewise relish this semi-biographical narrative. Monarch watchers will also like this book, as will British subjects, or anyone who’s interested in or wishes they’d experienced late-Victorian or early-Edwardian life. If that’s you, then “Serving Victoria” is a book you’ll devour, quite happily.

judging that took place in Vancouver. Last year she earned her animal portrait accreditation from judging in Halifax and in 2011 earned the Children & Infant Portrait accreditation in Saskatchewan. She is constantly striving to learn. She says by submitting to PPOC she continually gains more knowledge about photography including pointers on centre of interest, presentation, lighting, color balance, creativity, and print quality from the comments that are provided by a panel of cross-Canada judges who critique the images entered. Even if not all of them pass, the comments are always helpful she says. For each category, 10 different photos are submitted — four taken inside, four taken outside and two of the photographer’s choice. All have to pass the review panel to gain the accreditation, and once a photo passes it cannot be entered again, even in a different category. There are many different categories to choose from. Hoskin is now collecting some of her images to try to earn the High Key Portrait Award. High key images have prevailing white or pale tones, with some mid-

dle or darker tones. She likes to work on accreditations that are harder to get. Membership in PPOC must be renewed annually. If people choose a PPOC accredited photographer they can rest assured that photographer can deliver image excellence that sets them apart as industry leaders in a chosen category and that they adhere to a stringent code of ethics and standards and observe the highest standard of honesty in transactions. For a few years she has been taking team photographs of the Bentley Minor Hockey teams inside the Bentley Arena where lighting is poor. She believes working outside in natural light is much easier than even in a studio. Hoskin has her own small studio in the basement of her home with many different props she can choose from including foam rocks, a pink Cadillac pedal car and other childsize furniture, and different flooring and backdrops. “I am nervous about having pictures taken of myself,” Hoskin said. “I am usually on the other side of the camera. Other courses needed are available as various locations in central Alberta. More, who also managed the aquatic centre last year, said she is glad to be back. “I’m excited,” she said. “We’re hoping to offer a couple of new activities this year. We have a toonie Tuesday swim and the Value Drug Mart swim will be held Thursdays. We also have a couple new aquafit programs going on.”

Once again, The Wildrose Yodel Club brought a delightful mix of talent, passion and a genuine love of music to Rimbey. For the 16th consecutive year, the group performed to a crowd of close to 400 at Spring Fest in the Rimbey Community Centre, May 4. Their performance was the highlight of the evening that included a meal, a multitude of give-a-way prizes and a dance featuring the music of Jana and Danny. Member Fred Salvisberg is pleased with this year’s Spring Fest. “We have had lots of positive feedback from it,” he said. “It went well. If the audience is having fun, we’re having fun.” Salvisberg is grateful to their sponsors and for the opportunity to perform at the community centre. “It is a great facility,” he said. “As we are a purely a cappella group it is important the acoustics are good.” The Wildrose Yodel Club was formed in 1997 by 10 immigrants from Switzerland with a passion to sing and yodel. The club now has 16 male members coming from all walks of life and professions. The singers range in age from 20 to 78. Joe Rohrer and Ernie

Gisler, the group’s oldest members, are also charter members. Salvisberg, also a charter member, said the club began when the men got together several years ago, had a few drinks and ended up singing some of their favorite tunes. Their musical talent did not go unnoticed and before long they were performing in various venues in central Alberta communities including Edmonton, Red Deer and Calgary. Throughout the years they have performed for charity events in seniors lodges and churches across ventral Alberta. They have also performed at Long Beach, Calif., Wisconsin and Quebec. The group sings mostly in Swiss and German but also performs some rock and roll tunes such as The Book of Love and Breaking Up is Hard to Do. “I think we are doing quite well considering none of us are professional, we are all just amateurs who love to sing,” said Salvisberg. “For us it’s all about having as much fun as possible and enjoying what we do. Singing is good for the soul, good for your health.” He encourages young men who love to sing to consider joining the Wildrose Yodelling Club. “We need new blood. We are all getting older and we would be happy to welcome new members.”

Warmer weather allows farmers to get into fields Looks like we’ve completely skipped spring this year with temperatures this week around the Canadian Prairies shooting up from around freezing to into the 20s. A Public Memorial Service in Celebration of Winston’s Life was held at the Rimbey Christian Reformed Church, Rimbey on Friday, May 10, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. with the Reverend David Holmes officiating. Cremation took place at the Central Alberta Crematorium, Red Deer.
