Liberal candidate Doug Bing led a close race in Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows.
Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows: A see-saw battle, for awhile
“Let’s give it time,” added another. The numbers changed again just minutes later with Bing posting 1,080 votes to Rosenau’s 1,026. “It’s going to be close, apparently,” said Rosenau, nursing a cup coffee while an assistant perused a election results on his phone. “It’s going to be down to the wire,” she said in the half-empty St. Andrew’s Heritage Church in Port Haney. “We are in a tight riding, the two tightest ridings in the province. It’s a very divided riding. We felt that right from the beginning.” Although the campaign got off to a slow start, after delays in being declared the Liberal candidate, Bing said the election went well and that he did everything he could and “left nothing on the table.” Maple Ridge Coun. Cheryl Ashlie’s leadership of the campaign helped a lot, he added. Rosenau said she had an “amazing time.” “It’s up to the voters now,” she said 40 minutes after polls closed at 8 p.m. The voters eventually had their say. By 9:50 p.m., Bing led 6,820-6,151 with 100 of 129 ballot boxes reporting.

t was too close to call in Maple RidgePit Meadows in the minutes after polls closed on Tuesday. As results rolled up on the TV screen, the see-saw battle with voters affections looked to continue for a while. “It’s coming along. It’s a good start,” said Liberal Doug Bing, a dentist, shortly before the first unofficial numbers showed, with Bing taking 40 votes and Rosenau 22. Then the numbers reversed and Rosenau, a pharmacist, was sitting with 226 votes and Bing 203. Heavy sighs followed along with gasps of exasperation in the downtown Maple Ridge Liberal campaign headquarters on Lougheed Highway. “I thought it might be a nail biter all night,” said a Bing supporter.

Liberal Marc Dalton was leading by about 100 votes with half the ballot boxes left to count.

T
wo hours after polls closed, Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows was once again too close to call. With 37 of 125 ballot boxes reporting, B.C. Liberal Marc Dalton lead with 2,181 votes while New Democrat Mike Bocking was not far behind with 2,293 votes. Bocking’s camp had no comment at 9 p.m. “We are not commenting until polls come in. It’s too close to call,” said Bocking’s campaign manager, Joanne McNevin. NDP volunteers at Bocking’s office were optimistic earlier in the evening, with one saying the response has been “fabulous”. In 2009, incumbent Dalton won the riding with 68 votes. Dalton watched the polls come in at his campaign office surrounded by family. He campaigned until polls closed, clock-
ing a couple of 10 hour days of doorknocking on the weekend. He wants the gap to be wider this time so campaigning harder to make every vote count. “I hope it’s not too tight race,” said Dalton. “You realize it could be a difference of a few dozen votes. I hope it’s at least a 300 vote separation this time. Everybody has worked hard and I know other campaigns that have worked hard. We shall see what happens.” A public school teacher, Dalton is Métis and previously ran as a federal Conservative candidate. His tenure as the MLA for Maple RidgeMission however has not been smooth. In 2011, he was targeted for recall as part of the anti-Harmonized Sales Tax campaign but survived after organizers failed to collect enough signatures to trigger a by-election. Alex Pope of the Green Party of B.C. had 473 votes as of 10 p.m. while B.C. Conservative Chad Thompson got 320.

Search for drowned man suspended Two confirmed dead, swept away in Gold Creek by M o ni s ha M a r tin s staff reporter
The search for a man who drowned Friday while swimming in Golden Ears Provincial Park, east of Maple Ridge, has been suspended until conditions improve. The man and a friend were swimming in Gold Creek when they were swept away by a strong current around 2:30 p.m. “They were with a group of friends and the friends actually saw them go down,” said Sgt. Dale Somerville, with Ridge Meadows RCMP. A 19-year-old from Delta was spotted downstream by a RCMP helicopter. Swift water rescuers from the Maple Ridge Fire Department and Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue reached his body around 4:20 p.m., two kilometres downstream from the falls. Crews continued to search for the second man – a 21-year-old from Surrey – but called off the search Saturday because the water was too dangerous. Teams of volunteers from Maple Ridge, Mission and Coquitlam spent Saturday searching along the banks of Gold Creek. Friends of the man also joined the search, but stayed on the trails, away from the water. “After completing the search of the creek and finding nothing, we feel fairly certain that he is probably still trapped at the base of the falls,” said Rick Laing, with Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue. “It’s just too dangerous to put any-

Warm temperatures have melted snow from the peaks above, making streams run fast. Laing cautions swimmers to be extra careful in local rivers and streams. “The top of the falls is not the
place to go swimming,” said Laing, noting there is a fence and signs warning people not to enter the water. “It is way too dangerous. When we were up there Saturday, there were people up at the top of the falls where these two guys had fallen in. People just don’t seem to heed the signs.” Rescue crews have been to the location before, Laing added. “We’ve
done several body recoveries out of there.” Police tried to put an underwater camera into the creek to find the man, but were unable to because of the swift currents. Rescuers don’t known when the search will resume. “Parks is going to keep an eye on the level of the water and they will advise the RCMP when the water level goes down,” Laing added.
Advance poll numbers up With advance polls open for four days and a push by political parties to use them, turnout by early voters jumped 28 per cent for today’s election, compared to the 2009 B.C. election. Elections B.C. reports that 380,741 votes were cast in advance polls at the 85 constituencies around B.C. That’s about 12 per cent of the more than three million people eligible to vote in the province. In Maple Ridge-Mission, 3,882 of the 37,982 registered voters casts their ballots in advance, compared to 2,826 in 2009. More voters took advantage of advance polls in neighbouring Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows, with 5,004 of the 39,378 registered voters casting their ballots, compared to 3,994 in the previous election. Heaviest turnouts were reported in Comox Valley, Vernon-Monashee, Penticton, Saanich North and the Islands, Oak Bay-Gordon Head and Parksville-Qualicum. Elections B.C. also provided for absentee voting, where any eligible voter can vote at any polling location by writing the name of their preferred candidate on a blank ballot. In Comox, voters were able to cast the votes via drive-through. “Ensuring British Columbians have access to voting is of utmost importance,” said Chief Electoral Officer Keith Archer. “This innovative approach to assisting voters is another way Elections B.C. makes the provincial electoral process effective, efficient and accessible.”
Pitt Meadows to collect garbage every second week Residents must reduce, reuse and recycle by Monisha M ar t ins staff reporter

Asa Rairdan, 7, at the family’s recycling station, full after a week, in their home in Pitt Meadows.
Residents of Pitt Meadows will have to reduce, reuse and recycle even more as the city switches from weekly garbage pickup to collection every second week. Beginning July 4, recycling, food scraps and yard trimmings will be picked up weekly, while garbage will be collected curb side every other week. The change to bi-weekly garbage helps to avoid substantial fee increases in the future, said Pitt Meadows director of operations Kim Grout. “By taking measures now to divert waste from the garbage into the blue
box and green cart recycling program, Pitt Meadows will save money in the long run.” The city has already seen savings since it introduced curbside organic collections last year. While solid waste rates charged by Metro Vancouver increased in 2013, the city was cushioned from the impact because of the changes to its garbage collection schedule. The main driver for cost increases are fees charged for disposal. The current cost to dispose of one tonne of garbage is $107 compared to $50-$61 a tonne of waste from the green cart, where residents dump food scraps and soiled paper. The cost to dispose of garbage is expected to increase to as much as $151 per tonne by 2017, while green cart waste is expected to remain constant at
between $50-$61 per tonne, depending on the market. Grout says the city’s green waste program has been well-received by residents, with early results indicating weekly participation rates of roughly 70 per cent. The buy-in means less garbage from Pitt Meadows is being trucked to a landfill, with the city reports its curbside diversion rate increased from 39 per cent in 2010 and 2011 to 59 per cent in 2012. Food scrap collection from apartments will also begin mid-June. The switch, though, has some families concerned. “We are a family of four doing everything we know to do to keep household garbage down and we still have almost a full can every week,” said Wendy Rairdan. So long Toucan Sam Imagine a childhood without Tony the Tiger or Toucan Sam, no Ronald MacDonald, or Hamburglar, or Mayor McCheese. What if ‘Mean’ Joe Green hadn’t had a coke and a smile, or if Mark Messier could have had just one? Did anyone ever solve the Caramilk secret? According to a medical coalition, Canadian children 13 and younger shouldn’t be exposed to marketing of unhealthy foods and beverages. Its aim is to reduce the increasing number of overweight children. The Canadian Medical Association, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Hypertension Canada, College of Family Physicians of Canada and others are calling on food companies to immediately stop marketing foods high in fats, added sugars or sodium to children. The groups say the Supreme Court of Canada ruled in 1989 that advertisers should not be able to capitalize upon children’s credulity and that advertising directed at young children is manipulative. However, food companies in Canada, except in Quebec, are not required by law to restrict unhealthy food and beverage marketing to children. So they spend billions of dollars marketing to kids because they know it works. Up to 80 per cent of food advertising is for unhealthy food, according to reports. And 75 per cent of children today are overweight. That number has increased steadily over the past 30 years. If a ban was enacted, restrictions would apply to TV, internet, radio, magazines, mobile phones, and video games, as well as product placement, crosspromotions, school or event sponsorships, and viral marketing. The proposed advertising restriction includes characters or mascots promoting sugary cereals. You could require more warning labels, or add a tax on such products, too, but doing the latter hasn’t stopped people from smoking or drinking. In the end, parents have to stop buying their kids so much junk food, turn off the TV, take away the iPads, and make them go outside. – The News

Things you can’t say in elections VICTORIA – Another election campaign has come and gone, with the ritual posturing of political parties and most news media searching for anything they can portray as a conflict. Now comes the time to wonder why B.C. Views not enough people Tom Fletcher cared, or informed themselves about the real problems of running this $40 billion corporation called the B.C. government. Why would they, when the whole thing is presented as a combination of beauty contest and sports event, with endless discussion of polls and “attack ads” and who’s ahead and what’s the score? Again, we have seen the truth of former prime minister Kim Campbell’s observation that elections are no time to talk about serious issues. Indeed, there are some things you can’t speak of at all. Peace River North MLA Pat Pimm caused a stir at a candidates’ debate when he referred to constituents’ concerns that disabled children can cause difficulties in classrooms. He didn’t say classrooms should be segregated, although that’s a discussion worth having. He didn’t deny the need for more support for special needs kids. But his opponents immediately portrayed it that way, and media seized on the conflict despite the factual inaccuracy.
West Vancouver-Capilano MLA Ralph Sultan had a similar experience when he referred to his study of poverty in that affluent area. He noted that there was a high correlation between single parenthood and kids in poverty. Picking on single mums, his detractors exclaimed, and that’s what got reported. The B.C. Conservatives kicked their Boundary-Similkameen candidate out of the party because he wrote an article saying women shouldn’t choose to be single mothers. You can talk about child poverty, as long as you only discuss it based on federal statistics that do not measure poverty. Christy Clark started doing this as soon as she became B.C. Liberal leader, one of several issues where she dispensed with the facts and tried to copy a popular NDP stance instead. She was all about families, which can of course be single people, single parents or pretty well anything you want them to be. In fact, the decline of the traditional family and the abdication of responsibility by many parents, fathers in particular, are central factors in the problem of poor and neglected children. But you can’t talk about that, at least not during elections. Whole areas of political discussion have devolved into euphemisms that are chosen because they can’t be defined. Everybody’s in favour of “affordable housing,” for instance. What they won’t admit is that this is code for subsidized housing, because then they would have to talk about how much the subsidy is, and who has to pay for it. Good grief, that might raise the question of whether the state should be
taking money away from some people and giving it to others so they can live where they otherwise couldn’t afford to live. We even have rules preventing the media from reporting polls on election day. People might be influenced by this, you see. If you tell them Party X is far ahead, they might stay home and mow the lawn instead. If you tell them someone is making a comeback, they might change their vote because they want to be on the winning side, or the one that has “momentum.” Just like any other sport.
“Whole areas of political discussion have devolved into euphemisms that are chosen because they can’t be defined.”
The news media is steadily losing influence with the public. There are many factors involved, including the vast array of information sources that are available at most people’s fingertips. Another factor is treating the public like they’re idiots. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com (tfletcher@blackpress.ca).

Absurd to sue people who are doing good Editor, The News: Re: Maple Ridge sues ex-mayor (The News, May 10). This story hit a nerve with me. Not because I am associated in any way with Gordy and Mary Robson, nor have I ever patronized their golf course. I am, however, struck with how absurd the idea of suing people for enhancing land, ensuring usability for those interested in the pursuit of ruining a good walk with a golf game, raising sheep, hazelnut trees, having their grounds open for fundraising. In the idiot logic of Maple Ridge council, this does not suit the zoning of the area. Interestingly, Maple Ridge council does support rezoning the area north of Dewdney Trunk Road (269 to 272 streets) in the destruction of more than 100 acres of living forest, natural waterways, habitat for owls, bears, bobcat, deer, coyotes, woodpecker, blue heron, eagles, and songbirds in their quest to develop the area. It would appear, that the two, although clearly not related directly, have one common theme: the power of money. Rezoning is in the best interest of council in the latter case because a great deal of money will be made. A proposed 91 homes, with a nice fat tax base to be had. At the very least, two cars to each home, meaning almost 200 more polluting vehicles added to our environment. I find it putrid that on the one hand, Mr. Robson can be sued for preserving and enhancing land, but it’s totally OK for the District of Maple

It’s us Editor, The News: Re: Maple Ridge sues ex-mayor (The News, May 10). Maple Ridge is trying to shut down Heather Hills Golf Course and suing ex-mayor Gordy Robson to do so? Who’s money is our district using for this? Correct. Your’s and mine. I’ve never golfed at Heather Hills, but I have many friends who have. According to them, Heather Hills is family oriented (it had a children’s Easter egg hunt this year, with special family rates for golfing afterward), is lower priced than some other local courses, and an enjoyable golfing experience. Who golfs at Heather Hills? Guess what, mostly taxpayers from Maple Ridge. So the district is using our tax money to shut down a business service that many taxpayers enjoy. Give us a break. And please, Mayor Ernie Daykin and council, pay more attention to the commercial buildings you own and let us play golf on the weekends. Bill McGuire Maple Ridge

City to start education campaign June 1 Garbage from p3
“We are ready to take another step in our efforts and try to learn more, but with garbage pickup twice a month, I see runs to the transfer station in our future. What are larger families going to do?” The Rairdans, whose son Asa goes to the Maple Ridge environmental school, are a family of committed recyclers. Her kids correct her if she doesn’t put items in the correct bin and often remind her about the impact that garbage can have on soil and water. Rairdans thinks the city should have a trial period before the changes are implemented. “Give everyone one year to put good plans in place so that when this does happen, we are successful on all fronts,” she added. “This is the first we have heard about cutting the service in half. With half the garbage service are taxes going down?” The city will start an education campaign in the first week of June to introduce residents to the changes. Pitt Meadows isn’t the first Metro municipality to reduce garbage collection. Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Surrey, White Rock, Langley City, New Westminster and West Vancouver have already made the switch and other cities will have to introduce similar programs by 2015.
That’s the same year Metro Vancouver wants to reach its ambitious target of recycling or composting 70 per cent of the waste stream from all sectors, including businesses, to rein in how much garbage is dumped in landfills or burned. “I think it’s going to be a positive experience for most,” Coun. Tracy Miyashita said during a
committee meeting Tuesday. “We need to make a change. It’s a step in the right direction.” Mayor Deb Walters noted that education will be key to a successful switch. “I was very nervous about this in the business planning process,” said Walters. “I don’t think all our residents are there yet, but we’ll see.”
Take a bite out of garbage • Residents with more than one can of garbage can purchase extra garbage tags for $5 each at the Pitt Meadows Shopper’s Drug Mart, IGA Marketplace, city hall and the public works yard. • As part of the kickoff, the city will offer a coupon to each household for one free garbage tag for curb side pickup. • If it is a big garbage week, residents also have the option to take garbage to the Maple Ridge Transfer Station & Recycling Depot in the Albion Industrial Park at 10092 236th St. in Maple Ridge. • The best way to keep track of your garbage collection days is via the My Waste app. For more information and a fact sheet on garbage, visit pittmeadows.bc.ca.

High-water warning for Fraser River Municipal staff not anticipating trouble by Phil M elnyc h u k staff reporter
The Fraser River is still running high and fast, so the B.C. River Forecast Centre is keeping on its high streamflow advisory. The centre issued the advisory on Monday for the Lower Mainland, as well as upstream to Hope and the Fraser Canyon. While rainfall has eased and temperatures have cooled, easing the glut of snowmelt, the warm spell of weather followed by a few days of heavy rain early this week had forecast centre staff busy with their calculators. Usually, local streams account for only 10 per cent of the Fraser’s level near Hope. But because of the warmth and the rain, that contribution doubled. “This led to some challenges with modelling the Fraser over the past couple of days, as
weather and hydrometric data is limited from this region,” the centre said. A high streamflow advisory means river levels are expected to rise rapidly, with minor flooding in low-lying areas possible. But it’s what’s happening up north that has the centre maintaining its vigilance for the Lower Mainland. The Fraser River near Prince George peaked almost at flood stage on Tuesday. That water will start moving downstream, and could create peak flows of 11,000 metres per second at Hope, about 2,000 more than during mid week. Fred Armstrong, with the District of Maple Ridge, said local streams such as Kanaka Creek are high, but as yet there’s no flood risk. Municipal engineering and public works crews though are gearing up for the next few weeks, when the freshet – the massive snowmelt from the interior of B.C. – works its way down to the ocean.

Armstrong said there would have to be the “perfect storm” of warm temperatures and rain to produce a flood in the next few days. “We’re not anticipating, at least in the short term, any issues for people. “At this point, we’re guardedly optimistic.” He expected the gauge at the Mission railway bridge to reach just under six metres on the weekend. Levels about that would spark daily patrols of dikes and flood area. Armstrong said that, so far, only about 20 per cent of the snow pack in the Interior has melted and that an elevated risk of flooding remains as long as half of the snow pack does. But the next few days are forecast to be cooler and dryer. Last year, the flood
threat on the Fraser River subsided in the first week of July, after all the snow melt made its way downstream after also hitting about six metres on the Mission gauge. In 2007, water rose to 5.89, prompting many cities along the lower Fraser River to enact evacuation plans. But since then, dikes have been improved. Kim Grout, director of operations at the City of Pitt Meadows, said daily dike patrols don’t start until the Mission gauge reaches 6.5 metres. Tuesday, the gauge only hit 5.56 metres. “The water’s not on the dike yet,” she said. Crews, though, are keeping an eye on the infrastructure. “Just watching. Once we hit April, we start watching.”

Provincial Park can now enjoy a new deck and change houses around the hot spring pool. This has improved accessibility for visitors with mobility challenges. In April, the provincial government announced $500,000 for trail upgrades and a new bridge in Golden Ears Provincial Park to enhance recreational experiences for the over 615,000 who visit there annually. Golden Ears is the fourth most-visited provincial park in B.C. and the use of its trails is on the rise, especially with the equestrian community and outdoor recreationists. There are over 5,000 reservable sites in 95 provincial parks throughout British Columbia. Up to three reservations can be made online through Discover Camping. Individual sites are available up to three months in advance, while group sites are available up to 12 months in advance.

he Victoria Day long weekend is a busy one for Discover Camping, the province’s camping reservation system. But many B.C. Parks still offer first-come, firstserved campsites for visitors without reservations. Reservations in B.C. Parks are up 10 per cent this year to date, at 36,038 reservations compared to 32,729 reservations in 2012. The most popular parks are Haynes Point, Bear Creek, Cultus Lake, Rathtrevor Beach and Okanagan Lake South. Many parks have seen upgrades directed at attracting young families, offering new recreation opportunities, improving accessibility and increasing attendance. On Vancouver Island, check out Rathtrevor Provincial Park’s newly reconstructed campground and improved day use areas, including new picnic shelters and tables. Shower buildings at Cultus Lake Provincial Park have recently been enhanced to reflect green technology and improve accessibility, and new picnic tables have also been installed. Visitors to the Kettle River Recreation Area can now enjoy 28 new campsites, picnic tables and a new toilet and shower building, as well as more trails linking existing campground loops. In the Kootenays, visitors can enjoy new picnic tables, signage and other improvements to the trail system at Kikomun Creek Provincial Park. The new Ponderosa campground also provides 37 campsites, two cabins and a shower building. Those visiting the Liard River Hot Springs

Finding courage in Gaia’s Ghost Artist Jenni holland and writer stella Morrow are teaming up for a fundby M o ni s ha M a r tin s staff reporter
A
s an artist, Jennie Holland has always been drawn to the personal, painting and sketching works that lay bare her
heart. “I don’t like painting scenery,” Holland says with a laugh. Painting has always been cathartic for Holland, who studied illustration in the U.K. before moving to Canada to escape an abusive relationship. When she was tasked with painting the ghost of Gaia as a cover for a book of poetry, Holland filled it with messages, winding satire and substances into Mother Earth’s surreal world. “I like to paint with little hidden meanings,” says Holland, who lives in Pitt Meadows. The only information Holland had to begin her painting were the words “Gaia” and “Phoenix.” She had yet to read the poem the painting would accompany. Google and you will learn that she’s a goddess, and not just any old goddess that one might imagine sitting up in the clouds playing chess with our lives but the very personification of Earth. “She had all that power. Her lover was the distant planet of rings, Saturn, and her children were those up in the sky and those of the sea,”’ says Holland. When she imagined Gaia’s ghost, she saw a woman who was pretty beat up – burden by the havoc humans have wreaked on the environment, pummelled and scarred by human progress. Painted in an swirl of bright colours, Holland’s Gaia wears a stretched mask, her face hideously made up. Mother Gaia is healing, giving birth from her full belly. see Gaia, p19

Writer and poet Stella Renée Morrow and artist Jennie Holland have team up for a fundraiser at Lana Lou’s in Gastown. Proceeds from the sale of Morrow’s new book Gaia’s Ghost and Holland’s paintings will go to the Cythera Transition House Society.
Maple Ridge actress lands role in Rogue series on Movie Central A
t 17, Sarah Jeffery speaks with an air of confidence of an actress who is much older. She has no qualms about working hard or facing repeated rejection. “Some people think you can just go and book a role but it’s a lot of rejection before you face success,” says Jeffery. The Maple Ridge actress who began acting at the age of nine landed the “biggest” role of her life last year as Evie Travis in Movie Central’s first original series Rogue. “Going from doing a few commercials to a role like this is a dream come true. “It’s pretty surreal,” says Jeffery, who transferred from Maple Ridge secondary to Langley Fine Arts School last year. A dance major, Jeffery’s new high school has allowed her the flexibility to pursue her passion. “The school is so accepting of the
arts,” she says. Rogue, which started airing its first season in April, follows Grace Travis, a morally and emotionally-conflicted undercover detective. Played by British actress Thandie Newton, Grace is tormented by the possibility that her own actions contributed to her son’s mysterious death. In her quest for the truth, Grace finds herself striking out on her own and falling deeper into the city’s most powerful and dangerous crime family. Jeffery plays Evie who is Grace’s daughter – a child she increasingly neglects as the story unfolds. “My character just feels forgotten and pushed to the side,” explains Jeffery. “So she acts out.” For Jeffery, acting out was cathartic. “It’s kind of nice to channel your energy through someone else’s story. It’s not usually something I’d be doing so it’s nice to have a
break from reality.” All 10 episodes of Rogue were filmed in Vancouver and Jeffery hopes the show lands a second season. Being in the midst of award-winning actresses and actor meant Jeffery’s learned a lot. Newton led her through exercises to get her into character, while Kavan Smith who plays Evie’s dad helped calm her down when she was anxious. Newton even coached her on how to walk the red carpet before the show’s Los Angeles premier. “If Season 2 comes along that’s great,” Jeffery added. ““It was a big deal to be surrounded by so many talented people. Thandie showed me the reins and helped me through everything.” Sarah Jeffery at the Rogue premier in L.A. Contributed

She began dancing at age three, and has been a student at Peggy Peat’s School of Dance for the past 14 years. Last year, she was part of the dance team that represented Canada at the International Dance Organization’s Jazz and Modern Dance World Championship.  When Steeves isn’t training for competitions or instructing classes at the local dance school, she can be found in costume as the mascot for Dinotown in Pitt Meadows, Dusty, and at events at her high school, Thomas Haney secondary, where she plays Thor.
Maple Ridge dancer Darby Steeves cleaned up at the Surrey Festival of Dance awards last week. The 16-year-old was chosen as the tap and stage provincial representative from the Surrey Festival of Dance but also won three honours trophies for an outstanding performance, most promising choreography and top tap points as well as eight scholarships. Steeves is graduating from Thomas Haney Secondary School this year.
She is a skeleton of what she once was and wears a mask so that none will know; but soon this phoenix will rise and fly away, the broken roots once again finding their place. “In a nutshell, I painted a satirical exposure of how females always rise back up, no matter how awful the pain. It might take us a while, but then we remember. We are, after all, women, says Holland.
Holland and her friend Stella RenÊe Morrow have teamed up for a fundraiser for Cythera House, a women’s shelter in Maple Ridge. The night will be a celebration of women’s courage and feature Holland’s art, a poetry reading by Morrow and much more. Morrow’s collection of writing titled Gaia’s Ghost explores the inability to flee love’s darker side and the strength of women to rise out of

The News/sports Midgets medal in Barn Burner Local teams win silver and bronze as they host annual midget lacrosse tournament by Nei l Corbe tt staff reporter
It was a good Barn Burner for the Burrards. No actual flames were spotted at Planet Ice over the weekend, but both of the local teams were smoking hot, as they medalled in the Ridge Meadows midget lacrosse tournament. The midget A team lost in the final, 4-3 to Port Moody, but took the silver medal. “It was a tough game against a big, tough, strong team,” said Midget A coach Lance Andre. He said the strong showing is a positive sign that a competitive season is ahead for his group. Goaltenders Thomas Hankins and Justin MacLellan shared the netminding duties equallly, and both gave their team a chance to win. “They both did exactly what we asked of them,” said Andre. Daylan Kellough was the most valuable player of the final, while other game MVP awards went to Miller Thind, Nick Robison and Haden Harty. The Burrards opened the tournament with a 14-2 win over Port Coquitlam on Friday, and followed that up with a 10-1 drubbing of Chilliwack on Saturday morning. On Saturday night they beat Delta 9-5 to finish their pool play in first place. In the A2 bronze game, Delta beat Burnaby 8-3. The Burrards midget B team won the bronze medal this weekend. The hardware was awarded after a nail-biting 5-3 win over Abbotsford – a team that had defeated the Burrards in their only meeting earlier in the league tiering round. In the tournament, the Burrards beat Surrey 5-4 and Port Moody 6-3 in pool play, but lost to North Delta 7-4.

Anthony Kalinich (left) of the Burrards tries to get around Jake Stuart of Port Moody during the gold medal game. In the B final, New Westminster beat North Delta 10-1. Both goalies Nick Heron and Adam Bennett received game MVP awards during the tournament, with Bennett turning away 22 shots in the final period of the medal game when the team ran into penalty
troubles. The other game MVPs were Jack Gillespie and Emmett Clayton. • The Western Lacrosse Association Burrards will play their first game of the season on Sunday, and it will be a Burrards Minor Night. The Planet Ice grounds will have a
barbecue, dunk tank, an autograph session with the senior Burrards, and a fastest shot competition for the players. There will also be an airplane toss between periods. The game will be played at 6:45 p.m., and the fairground events will run from 4-6:30 p.m.

Minor hockey hiring DOHO The DOHO is coming – Ridge Meadows Minor Hockey will be hiring a fulltime director of hockey operations. The controversy over the first paid head of hockey in the volunteer-run association was settled by a decisive 13-4 vote of the executive on Monday night. New president Dan Herbanson explained that a screening committee will advertise the position, and bring candidates before the executive committee. The committee will look at neighbouring associations who have paid coaches, and what their remuneration is, with an eye to paying the local doho a salary of between $40,000 and $80,000 per year. The candidates will no doubt offer a variety of qualifications, but Herbranson said demonstrated coaching skill will be the priority. There are pros and cons to having a paid coach. The most obvious drawback is cost. Herbranson said the main benefit will be having a single vision, as articulated by the DOHO and the executive, of player development and team play. The new DOHO will be involved with the selection of coaches, and the goal is to have him or her on the job by July 1.

Men’s hardball tourney this weekend Maple Ridge will be hosting an elite-level men’s baseball tournament at Hammond Stadium and Larry Walker Field from May 16-21. The event will feature eight teams from five different leagues around B.C. The Maple Ridge Jerks and Dewdney Bulls from the Lower Mainland Baseball association (LMBA) an 18-and-over league, will be hosting the tournament and managing its day-to-day operations. The rest of the tournament roster will be filled out by the Coquitlam Angels (Pacific Metro Baseball League – PMBL), Ridge Meadows Rays, Aldergrove Sun Devils, Howe Sound Cannons, Richmond Athletics and Burnaby Blue Jays. The tournament will
run from Thursday to Monday of the May Long Weekend, and will include 15 games. There will be two pools where each team will play three games, with the top two from each making the semi-finals on Monday. On Saturday evening the game play will pause for the featured event of the tournament, the Billy Minor Pub sponsored “Bash for Cash” Home Run Derby. The derby will include two sluggers from each team, including last year’s champion from the Richmond Athletics David van Ostrand. Van Ostrand was a draft pick of the New York Yankees in 2006 and played college ball at California Polytechnic State University. The 6’6” 215 pounder put on quite a show at
last year’s event, hitting several tape-measure shots over the parking lot in right field at Larry Walker. Last year the Richmond Athletics won the tournament in a tightly contested matchup with the hometown Maple Ridge Jerks. “We weren’t happy losing our tournament, especially to a league rival,
on our home field last year,” said Jerks manager Matt MacLean. “This year will be different as we fully intend on keeping the trophy in Maple Ridge.” The Jerks roster is comprised of many former B.C. Premier Baseball League and college players, but most were also members of Ridge Meadows Minor Base-
ball teams that brought midget division western Canadian gold to Maple Ridge in both 2000 and 2001. The tourney is spectator friendly, with a beer garden on the right field line. The barbecue at the fully stocked concession will be serving its featured ballpark item the “Hammond frank” hot dogs.

The program started yesterday, and culminates with participation in the Portland Timbers Cup on May 24-26 weekend at U13 to U16 age groups. “We have been able to expand the rosters to 20 players in the first two phases to provide an even more in-depth talent identification of potential high performance players,” said Michael Findlay, director of soccer development BC Soccer. “The program will once again provide these players with the opportunity to train and participate within an advanced high performance environment with the goal of developing themselves for the next level of play through our development partners the Vancouver Whitecaps FC and our Canadian National Youth Teams Programming.” The final phase of the program, July 1-28 for U13 to U14 male and females and July 1-21 for U15 to U16 male and females is the culmination of the program and main competition platform.
