cott Fraser, the incumbent NDP MLA for Alberni-Pacific Rim, has won the battle for his seat. But his party has lost the war in the provincial election with the election of a Liberal majority government on Tuesday. Fraser took the riding with 9,829 votes. Liberal candidate Darren DeLuca had 5,981, and BC Conservative candidate Enid Mary Sangster-Kelly earned 1,377 votes. Officials reported an overall BC voter turnout at 48 per cent. “I’m grateful for...a resounding
endorsement from the voters of AlberniPacific Rim,” Fraser said. “Darren put up a good fight and I always expect a fight.” Fraser circulated about the room at the Steelworkers Hall on Montrose Street, which was filled with a who’s-who from Port Alberni labour: Steelworkers, ADTU, district labour council and others. Province-wide the Liberals took 50 seats to the NDP’s 33. Vancouver Island remains an NDP stronghold, having won 10 of 14 seats. The Liberals won two seats. The Green Party established a beach head, electing their first member in Oak Bay-Gordon Head.

The Liberal majority shocked Fraser. “I travelled across BC and most people said that they were ready for a change,” he said. Fraser said he’ll continue to fight for issues that are pertinent to the Alberni Valley. Raw log exports need to be reduced, and the value of logs has to be increased in relation to jobs, he said. The forest industry needs to be better managed, and the Raven Underground Coal Project bears watching, he added. “Those checks and balances need to be there so we don’t end up losing what we already have.” The NDP may be in opposition again

The prospect of an NDP majority spooked voters, DeLuca said, and the NDP record of the 1990s was the ghost that came back to haunt the party. “Adrian Dix and Moe Sihota (party president) were two of three architects of that decade,” DeLuca said. “People don’t want or need their lives turned upside down again.” On CBC Radio, NDP leader Adrian Dix, who retained his seat in VancouverKensington, addressed a hushed crowd at the NDP campaign headquarters. “Elections belong to the voters and the voters have decided,”

he Alberni District Secondary School grad parade and ceremony will not be held on the same night this year. Instead, the car parade and prom will be held Saturday, June 8 and a cap-and-gown graduation ceremony will be held Friday, June 28. The former Dry Grad is now known as the prom, ADSS vice principal Ron Behnke said. The grad committee made the decision to split the event, he added. Port Alberni city council approved a grad parade committee’s request to close the streets
along the parade route on Saturday, June 8, from 5:45–7 p.m. In previous years the grad parade used to start from the old high school and weave its way to the AV Multiplex, where students disembarked from their vehicles— everything from classic cruisers to sports cars, tractors and horses and buggies—and strolled into the building for the grad ceremony. This year however, the parade is being held on June 8. The route will be along Anderson Avenue, West on Burde Street, North on 10th Avenue and east along Roger Street to the multiplex, councillors were told. The parade is subject to the
provision of $2 million in liability insurance in the city’s name, correspondence noted. Grad committee spokesperson Anita Wilson wasn’t available for comment. The actual grad ceremony is being held on Friday, June. 28, again at the AV Multiplex. Students will gather at the high school where they will don their caps and gowns then parade to the multiplex, Behnke said. The move to split the events has to do with a change in the logistics of the ceremony. This will be the first year that ADSS grads will be donning a cap and gown, Hartwell said. In a previous

SUGGESTIONS FOR YOUR WEEK AHEAD
Weed Eager The City of Port Alberni wants to know if you’re behind their drive to kick weeds past the curb. And sidewalks. And gutters. The city is thinking about creating a bylaw that would require property owners to keep their curbs, sidewalks, gutters, etc. clear of weeds. You can fill out the survey online at www.portalberni.ca or on their Facebook page, “Port Alberni Zoning Bylaw Review”. Or, old-fashioned paper copies are available at city hall. Deadline to give the city a piece of your mind is May 24.
All Heart The First Open Heart Society of BC Port Alberni Chapter is holding a spring meeting and potluck dinner for all interested pulmonary patients this Friday, May 17, in the Cedar Room at Echo Centre. Family’s love ‘unconditional’ Alberni Valley News Thursday, May 16, 2013

rron Thompson’s family said goodbye to him last Saturday. At his funeral, pallbearers quietly walked Thompson’s flower-laden grey casket out to a waiting van. His remains are to be cremated. The family lost more than one brother that fateful Monday when Arron died. Another brother, Archibald, is facing second degree murder charges in connection with the incident. Crown Counsel in Port Alberni is still reviewing the matter and charges may yet change. Arron Thompson’s seven siblings and his parents now begin the task of trying to cope and heal in the wake of what is an alleged fraticide. But a deep reservoir of love and a strong familial bond are enabling the family to not just cope with the immense loss of Arron, but also to try and forgive their brother Archibald. “We love each other unconditionally, all of us,” eldest sister Caroline said. The siblings— some of whom have different fathers, and come from different Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations—don’t see themselves as a typical blended family.
“Mom never treated us differently because we had different fathers,” Catherine said. “We loved each other as one family.” The siblings each grew up in foster care, not always together, and the homes were exclusively nonaboriginal, she said. The siblings longed to live as a family again, but the lack of cultural exposure created a unique form of loneliness that would influence Arron’s life in the end, Catherine said. Archibald was the first boy born to mother Marcia and her first husband. Arron was born four years later to her second partner. The boys were inseparable, often dressing in identical clothes and playing with the same toys, Catherine said. “They were really close and Archibald always looked out for (Arron).” “He always took his role as the older brother seriously, even after they grew up.” The brothers were taken into foster care when they were under age 10, she said. The other siblings followed in succession. On one occasion, the boys hitchhiked from their rural foster home to their mother’s residence in town only to be returned by the police

later, Catherine said. “Archibald was bounced around in care a lot. He took it harder and always wanted to be with our mom,” she said. The boys separated later. Archibald lived with older sister Catherine, and Arron later with Caroline. Arron never wanted to be in the last home he was assigned to. Caroline, who was in her mid-20s with children of her own,
took him in. “All he said was that he couldn’t wait to get out of there,” she said. Arron always struggled with the

on (his) culture while he was in foster care. It was a missing piece of his life.” Arron had also talked to his family about one day becoming a social worker. Archibald was also reticent about his time in care, said Catherine, who took him in. “I didn’t prepare with courses the way my sister did but I still took him in. He’s my brother and I took him in to help.” Archibald applied himself to school, graduating from VAST in 2008-09, even giving an aboriginal drum to school staff. He also travelled during that time as well, something he often reflected on. The brothers sometimes had dustups but nothing that hinted at fierce sibling rivalry, Catherine said. “They’d wrestle around...but that was it.” After seven of eight children passed through foster care and grew into adulthood they forged a close bond, making up for lost time. The family, some

with children of their own now, celebrate birthdays and holidays together, and frequently visit one another. “Arron got the Army Cadet Hall for us once so we could all have Christmas dinner together,” Catherine said. “He and Archibald cooked the dinner. Arron wasn’t much of a cook but he did his part.” Both boys moved in with their mother after they became adults—Archibald first then Arron eight months ago. They picked up where they left off as children: they’d hang out, walk, talk, and play video games late into the night. If something smouldered below the surface between the two young men, it was exacerbated by grinding poverty, Catherine surmised. Continued / 8

Brother remains in custody
WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON/ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
From left to right, Caroline, Marcia and Catherine Thompson hold pictures of their brothers Archibald and Arron during better times.
From / 7 The boys worked seasonally at a fish plant. They didn’t always qualify for employment insurance and resorted to social assistance for an income. “There was tension because of finances. Living in that kind of poverty made things difficult,” Catherine said. Archibald also began wrestling with alcohol issues, and he recently spent time at a treatment facility in Comox, she said. The family isn’t sure of what happened on the morning of May 6. All they know for sure is Arron staggered out of the
residence and across the road, bleeding profusely from a stab wound. “I was at work when I found out. I went to get my sister then I texted my mother and we went to the hospital,” Catherine said. “We weren’t sure yet if Archibald was involved.” The two sisters and mother sat anxiously in the hospital waiting room. At 10:30 a.m., doctors told the group that Arron didn’t make it. “Archibald called mom on her cell and she told him ‘Arron is dead,’” Catherine said. A few hours later, a police dog team
and chairs were put away, the family walked out of the centre and on to their healing journey. The family feels an obligation to both grieve for their dead brother, but also to support the brother who is accused of killing him. “(Archibald) is our brother and we would never turn our back on him,” Caroline said. “I know we have the strength to get through this.” “They are our brothers and we unconditionally love both of them,” Catherine said. “It’s going to be a long hard road for us to accept this.”
flushed Archibald out of Dry Creek Park. He was arrested on Frank Street after a short foot chase. He remains in custody. Police are still investigating the matter and are being assisted by a unit of officers from Victoria, police said. The mother has seen and talked to Archibald since he’s been in custody. None of his siblings have though, Catherine said. At the end of the funeral, family and friends gathered for a luncheon at the Port Alberni Friendship Centre, a fixture in the siblings’ lives while growing up. Afterward, as tables

Big victory for BC Liberals
The B.C. electorate has decided to re-elect a BC Liberal government, with Premier Christy Clark leading a relentless campaign that was focused on the economy. Pollsters and pundits were proven completely wrong, as virtually all of them had predicted an NDP win. Congratulations are in order to the premier. MLA Rich Coleman, provincial campaign chair who also regained his seat, said all along that Clark was a brilliant campaigner, and she was just that. Her campaign focused on the economy, day after day, using attack ads to highlight the record of past NDP governments and to define hr opponent Adrian Dix. It clearly resonated with voters. They were unhappy with NDP leader Dix’s flip-flop on the Kinder Morgan pipeline in the midst of the election, and saw that as an indication that the NDP would wilt on major economic development projects when environmentalists applied heat. Many also supported the Liberals because they pledged to keep a close eye on government spending — something the NDP had no intention of doing, as was indicated by their expensive campaign pledges and unwillingness to balance the budget until at least the fourth year of their mandate. The BC Liberals now need to deliver on their pledges to balance the budget, pursue economic development projects and investment and work towards a brighter future for young people. The disappointing thing about the election is that so few people voted. It appears that voter turnout only went up by one per cent — to 52 per cent. Almost half the registered voters didn’t bother to take part. This is a bad omen for democracy in the future, particularly as so few younger people voted. — Langley Times

ICTORIA – The pollsters, pundits and the self-styled rebels of the B.C. Liberal Party were struggling for answers as their conventional wisdom went out the window on election night. In came the B.C. Liberals and Christy Clark for a fourth term, with a 50-seat majority that is stronger than the one they took into the 2013 election. “Welcome to the club,” Alberta Premier Alison Redford wrote on Twitter on election night, referring to Redford’s own win in the face of a wall of polls and pontificators saying she was done. Here’s the next thing to ignore from the media experts who rub shoulders with those pollsters and political strategists. B.C. Conservative leader John Cummins ran a distant third in his Langley constituency, and his goal of a breakthrough didn’t materialize anywhere. His idea of scrapping the carbon tax on fossil fuels didn’t impress many people, despite his focus on rural and northern B.C. Clark should heed the NDP on at least one thing. Dix promised to move B.C. election dates to the fall, starting in 2017. The idea of giving his anticipated government an extra six months to govern the province was uncontroversial when Dix proposed it in his party’s election platform, so Clark will likely proceed with it. Another NDP idea Clark should adopt is getting the corporate and union money out of election campaigns. Continued/ 11

Mailbag: Feedback on voter apathy, dark holes

QUESTION of the week
!
Votes should be mandatory To the Editor, With 50 per cent (or less!) provincial voter turnout, people of B.C so-inclined need no longer complain that politicians are doing a half-assed job when their bosses (the electorate) demonstrate a halfassed interest in the hiring process (voting). Shame on those who failed to exercise a democratic right that people in war-torn places risk their lives for and Canadians have fought and died for, leaving the work of maintaining it to the rest of us. If there were ever a case for mandatory voting, this would be it. Which begs the question: When only half (or less) of registered voters cast a ballot, can a government have an honest mandate or is it a sham? Sure seems like the latter. Liz Stonard, Port Alberni

What’s not in NDP’s budget? From/ 10 She likely won’t, because her party’s financial advantage is too great, but the time has come for this important reform. The B.C. Liberals’ much-discussed “balanced” budget will now be put to the test over the next few months. The legislature must be convened by

September to debate that budget. This should be the last vote based on an untested budget, and the first of many scheduled fall legislature sessions.

hit with It’s Over. That song now plays over and over in my cranial Wurlitzer Jukebox: the 40th B.C. provincial election is finally over! The relentless and unabashed campaigning, all at taxpayers’ expense, began when Christy Clark was anointed as BC Liberal Party Leader in February 2011. During that time, we’ve all witnessed the following truism : “The more politically unattractive one is, the more sure of oneself one seems to be”. I’m delighted that I’ll get no more robocalls from political parties, nor from Stockwell Day, nor from the Dogwood Initiative; all pushing their phony agendas. But I’m saddened once again by the abysmal election turnout. Despite valiant efforts taken to increase the numbers of voters, like more efficient advance polling, we could still only manage a meagre 48 per cent turnout in B.C., according to early reports. A few days earlier there was a general election in Pakistan where more than 60 per cent of the 86 million eligible voters came out to cast their
ballots. That was despite a very real threat of violence from the Taliban, who killed 40-plus people at pre-election rallies. I heard no reports of Kalishnikovtoting terrorists lurking behind the rhododendron bushes near voting places in B.C., yet our turnout was considerably lower than that of Pakistan. It has been claimed that voter apathy seemingly increases the arrogance of those elected, but that’s not always the case. For example, with its mandatory voting laws there is a 98 per cent turnout for every election in Australia; however, in this imperfect world of ours, there are still reports of some arrogant antipodean autocrats. Cave bill not complete ban To the Editor, Re: Forestry tops issues at Alberni all-candidates event, May 9, www. albernivalleynews. com. I have long studied cave protection legislation and management of cave resources in BC.
There is a reference to the banning of ‘commercial caving’ in your account of the candidates’ exchange on the need to adequately protect cave resources in the Alberni Valley region in the public interest. The candidate is referring specifically to the proposed BC Cave Protection Act (Bill M206), according to the video stream of the all-candidates event that you linked to your article. Bill 206 is modeled on the 1988 US Federal Cave Resources Protection Act, as well as the more than 22 state cave laws. Introduced as a nonpartisan initiative in 2010, the bill provides for regulating commercial activities in caves by means of a permit system. A permitting process is not an outright ban. The permitting of these activities in caves is consistent with existing requirements for commercial operations in B.C.’s backcountry, including in caves. Paul Griffiths, Campbell River
Use it or lose it To the Editor, Will critiquing
church, union or political party dogma get you applause? Is capitalist media the last bastion of a free press? Should reporters be awarded judge status so they can’t be fired without just cause? Are Voltaire’s “I may not agree but defend to the death your right to air your views,” and Patrick Henry’s “Give me liberty or give me death,” not politically correct news? History recorded the War of 1812 and how First Nations warriors saved Canada from U.S. rule; media reported child abuse incidents by priests and in Indian residential school. Shall the debts of our fathers haunt us to infinity and render Canucks pack mules? Just as NDP negotiated the Nisga’a settlement treaty, that many years ago was sealed, will Liberals give aboriginals a referendum to sell feudal lord status to level playing field? Can private sector get same benefits as government, if voting majority appealed to emancipate common Canucks and ensure all past favouritism will be repealed? R.J. Frankow, Port Alberni

How reliant we have become on technology. The computer was gone for a few days - it had a virus. There were things to be done, the deadline for Sundays church bulletin and Pastor’s Pen were approaching. - and there was no way to look up the answers to difficult crossword clues - it was an inconvenience. What a joy it is that nothing can come between us in our daily journey with God - He is always available. The bible tells us in Romans 8:39 “neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God, that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” As we come to Pentecost Sunday it is reassuring that just as the Holy Spirit came to the disciples after Jesus died His Spirit is available to us 24/7.

he man accused of running down and severely injuring three people last month is facing 28 charges including four counts of attempted murder. Charges against Travis Foord of Port Alberni were sworn before a justice of the peace in Port Alberni Provincial Court on May 2. The charges include four counts of attempted murder. Initially, only three victims were reported, but there was a fourth person at the scene, RCMP Cpl. Jen Allan said. Other charges include failure to stop at the scene of an accident, criminal negligence causing bodily harm, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle,
and assault causing bodily harm. Police were called to an incident on the 2800 block of Sixth Avenue shortly after 1 a.m. on March 30, according to RCMP. Police found a truck allegedly driven by Foord on its side with one person trapped under it, and two people laying injured nearby. The fourth person was not injured. Rescue crews from the Port Alberni Fire Department freed the man underneath the truck, and he and the other two injured people were taken to hospital. One of the group, an adult female, was flown to Victoria. The three, since identified as Stephone Dennis, Cam Johnson and Belinda Hainsworth, are still recovering from multiple broken bones.

he city’s share of Mayor John Douglas’s recent trip to China will be paid out of the councillors’ travel budget, not with economic development money or that of the city’s general contingency fund.
Councillors changed their minds and had to rescind a previous vote then make a new motion calling for Douglas’s trip to be funded with money from council’s travel budget up to a limit of $2,000. In April, councillors voted to allow Douglas to travel to Enshi, China, where SD 70 officials are recruiting students

Contractor disputes roof bid process WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON Alberni VAlley news

An out-of-town contractor is raising the roof over the awarding of a city contract to replace the roof at Echo Community Pool. Maple Ridge roofer Mark Super submitted a $139,000 bid to replace the roof at the community pool. According to Super,
his was the lowest bid among five bidders. City policy notes that bids are usually awarded to the lowest bid, but in this case Flynn Canada of Port Alberni won it with the second lowest bid at $176, 500. Parks and Recreation director Scott Kenny acknowledged that Super was the lowest bidder, but said that there were issues with
his bid. The bid called for the installation of the Soprema Roofing Membrane System, which requires a specific designation to be considered a certified installer. Super doesn’t have that, Kenny said. Also, Super isn’t a member of the Roofing Contractors Association of BC, and therefore can’t provide a
a warranty for the Soprema product,” Kenny said. “If you don’t have it then you don’t have it.” Super contested the point, saying that “Nowhere in the spec did it say that a Soprema warranty was wanted.” Allowing a product switch mid-bid would be unfair to other contractors and may put the city at risk legally, Kenny said.
RCABC warranty for his work. Such a warranty costs the city more but it better protects the city’s interests if there is an issue with the material, Kenny said. And lastly, Super’s bid was incomplete when he submitted it, Kenny said. Specifically, the portion to do with the guarantee was missing. “Super can’t provide

Conquer tricky lighting with balance ‘I know that the optimal aperture for a lens is two stops down from wide open, or in my case f8.’
NORMAN SILVERSTONE
Digi-pixels
A
realtor friend of ours, Suzy, e-mailed me from Nanaimo. Suzy is the single mother of two very small children and is trying to balance life, children, and work. “Help!” she said. “I am taking my own photographs of home interiors and they come out yellow and very grainy”. I e-mailed her back and explained about the white balance of digital photography. I was thinking that she had set her camera to “sunny” as a white balance, therefore creating that yellow look on rooms lit by tungsten light. I also explained that her ISO was probably set very high which would let her shoot in lower light situations but with digital noise. There is always a tradeoff in photography: buy a faster shutter speed and pay for it in lens aperture, buy a small aperture for more depth-of-field and

pay for it in shutter speed, buy a higher ISO and pay for it in digital noise. Suzy e-mailed me back and asked if I would come and photograph a house for her and give her a simple lesson on shooting indoors. I set aside everything I typically take for this kind of shoot:
my sturdy tripod, one telescoping lightstand, one white umbrella, two strobe slaves, two Nikon auto/manual “X” flashes, Sekonic flash/daylight light meter, remote cable release, Nikon SC-17 extended off-camera flash cord, flashlight, spare eyeglasses, extra
batteries with a battery checker, Nikon D300s with a 17-70mm Nikon lens as well as a Sigma 10~20mm lens. I knew that Suzy was using a Canon G10 camera so I went to the Internet and looked up her camera’s specs and layout. Drove to
Nanaimo, grabbed Suzy and immediately went to Starbucks to re-fuel. We arrived at the two-storey house to be photographed at noon, and the first thing that I noticed was that the front of the house was facing east. Although the sun was shining in full force, the front of the house was in shade. A mistake on my part: I should have asked which way the house was facing for the exterior shots. I wanted to check out the interior so I took only the minimum gear into the house: tripod, camera, extended flash cord, SB800 Nikon strobe flash in bounce position, and a remote cable release. The ceilings were stippled white, perfect for bouncing light off
of and creating a soft, even lighting in the room instead of harsher direct lighting from my flash. I took a light meter reading of the room and set up the camera with the wide-angle lens to shoot at 15mm (which would equal 22mm lens in 35mm talk), set my ISO at 800, the aperture at f8 (for lots of depth-of-field) and the shutter speed at 1/60 of a second. Because I was using a tripod it would have been possible to shoot at very slow shutter speeds, thereby gaining lots of depth of field. I could have shot at f11 @ 1/30 or else f16 @ 1/15. However I know that the optimal aperture for a lens is two stops down from wideopen, or in my case f8. It all worked beautifully. Any questions? E-mail me at nsilverstone@telus. net or see me online at www.silverstonephotos. com. Norman Silverstone teaches photography through North Island College and Eldercollege in Port Alberni.

The Alberni Airborne Volleyball Club U12 and U13 teams competed well at the U13 Provincials in Abbotsford. It was both teams’ first times going to the provincials. Volleyball BC’s youngest age category is U13 so the U12 team was playing against teams that were a year older than them. The U12 team played very well and
improved noticeably over the weekend. Coaches and referees commented on how hard they were playing for such a young team and congratulated the girls. More than 180 teams competed over three days on 18 volleyball courts at the Trade and Exhibition Centre. The girls were amazed and thought this was a very cool experience. The most inspirational player
from each team received a t-shirt. Alberni’s Rebecca Donahue received one from the U13 team; Desirae Henstridge accepted one from the U12 team. Overall, all the coaches and parents could keep saying is “Wow, they have sure come a long way. It is incredible how much the girls have improved since their first practice.” The coaches look forward to seeing how they play next season.

Wow! We have been open for four months and I can’t believe the response! I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for trusting us with your health and that of your families and friends. And thanks for making our family feel so welcome and so much a part of this incredible community we share. I am especially amazed at the numbers of babies, toddlers and kids that you have referred for colic, breathing and digestive difficulties as well as general health, wellness checkups and care. It’s so especially rewarding to me because ensuring the health of the next generation is so pivotal at every level for the wellbeing of our society. Chiropractic is amazing! I see its delivery to you as having three levels of application to your health. The first level is intended to reduce your headaches, asthma, spinal pain, acid reflux, menstrual pain, constipation…..etc by restoring the integrity of your spine and thus increasing the nerve supply that keeps all of your body healthful. The second level includes regular Chiropractic care to keep your spine supple. The regular adjustment of subluxations (Chiropractic cavities) restores the movement that helps diminish the start of the wear and tear and degeneration that leads to spinal osteoarthritis. As a side effect of your adjustments, your spine should hurt less and less often. The third level of care allows your nervous system to do a better job of integrating your health similar to increasing the speed and efficiency of your computer. At this level, the adjustment is delivered to your spine but the result is an improved nerve supply to every cell, organ and tissue in your body. The level of care you choose for your family is completely up to you. A few neck adjustments to help you shoulder check more effectively, three months of care to get you fully prepared for golf season or a lifetime of wellness care for your entire family would be equally fine. Every adjustment counts. Every adjustment matters. It’s always a privilege to help put the ‘being’ back into a human being. Thanks again to all of you, from my family to yours. Enjoy your spring!

On June 21, 22, 23, the Alberni Valley Fringe Theatre Festival will add colour, adventure and alternative theatre to the arts district on Argyle Street. A Fringe theatre festival is theatre that is not of the mainstream. Fringe festivals provide a venue for alternative theatre. Art Matters Society, producers of the first ever Port Alberni Fringe produce live, unjuried theatre and produced a Fringe Festival in the Fraser Valley for 14 years. Traditionally, there are several shows going on at the same time in different venues. People can pay a small fee for each show— between $4 and $10—or buy a Fringe Pass for $80$100 and see several shows over the two- or threeday festival, organizer Gwynne Hunt says. “You never know what you are going to get attending a fringe show; it can be rough and unpolished or it can be spectacular.” The main stage this year is the Capitol Theatre on Argyle Street, with Char’s Landing serving as a boutique venue. The lineup already boasts 28 performances, Hunt said. A volunteer Fringe Festival meeting is planned for Saturday, June 1 from 1–2 p.m. at the Capitol Theatre. Come armed with questions and enthusiasm. Please call Hunt at 250-723-3331 for more information or to volunteer.

Artists bring art back into schools NIOMI PEARSON

Special to the NewS
The artistic creations of nearly 200 local children will be on display at the Rollin Arts Centre gallery this month. The show is the result of a new program administered by the Community Arts Council designed to help bring the lost art of art back into Alberni Valley schools. The Art in the Schools program began last year as an arts fair and has blossomed into full on artist-in-theclassroom sessions at Eighth Avenue, Alberni Elementary, Gill Elementary, EJ Dunn, and Port Alberni Community Living. Arts administrator Melissa Martin said she came up with the idea after seeing a lack of art activity in local elementary schools. “The middle schools
◆ ARTISTS’ RECEPTION for the art in Schools exhibit takes place Saturday, May 25, 1–3 p.m.

Local artist Jason Titian, centre, has spent hours in the classroom at Eighth Avenue school as part of the Community Arts Council’s Art in the Schools program. Hundreds of local students will have their creations on display at the Rollin Arts Centre. From left to right: Katana Woodward, Maly Pohar, Titian, Ivan Frank and Jesse Nicholls.
and the high schools are lucky enough to still have art in their curriculum, but unfortunately the budget cuts deemed it so there wasn’t much arts in the elementary
schools,” Martin said. “Depending on the teachers, they tried to bring it in but the majority of it is based around craft time, and that’s usually Christmas time. That,

to me, was just not enough.” Last February, the arts council held trade show style assemblies in some of the schools, featuring local artists. This year, through an Arts B.C. grant, the council was able to hire six local artists to lead weekly art sessions with classrooms ranging
from Grade 2 and up. Teaching everything from pottery to paper mache, painting to mask making, the artists have been working with the students since early April and will be wrapped up in time for the gallery exhibit, which opened May 14 and runs until June 8. “The ability to have this art exhibit has
been my dream,” Martin said. “I want to give the children the experience of being an actual artist. They can come into the gallery, they’ll see their pieces on the walls or displayed, and then they’ll be given a reception on May 25.” Unlike other artist exhibits, which rely on art sales to fund the operating costs of the show, the children’s artwork will not be sold, and so gallery donations will be especially appreciated during the exhibit, Martin said. The Art in the Schools participating artists include Jason Titian, Yolande Fournier, Kelly Foxcroft-Poirier and professional painter
Dorothy Jarvis, who utilized some of the time to share her recent experiences painting in her home village of Port Simpson with the children. “I brought a few artifacts and rocks from the beach,” Jarvis said. Port Simpson is located near the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear sanctuary, and was particularly inspiring for Jarvis. Using tempra (water based) paints, the children expressed their creativity using the bear theme. Martin said she hopes to offer the program again next year to schools who were unable to participate this year. “My goal is to bring it to the high school if need be,” she said. “We’ve got to start small, and we’ve got to start with the children, and make them have as much love for the arts as early as possible.” “It’s just as important, in my opinion, as math and sciences and reading and writing.”
