‘Top Chef ’ contender to lead Rodeo parade

Matthew Stowe

By Jennifer Lang Organizers of this year’s Cloverdale Rodeo Parade have roped in reality TV star and genuine hometown hero, Top Chef Canada contestant Matthew Stowe. The Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary grad (Class of 2000) and serious contender for the sought-after TV title is this year’s parade marshal, meaning he’ll be trading his chef ’s hat for a Stetson this Saturday. Joining him in the parade through the historic Cloverdale town centre will be his wife, Amber, and

Whoop it up at Rodeo Days

By Jennifer Lang As host to tens of thousands of visitors during the Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair, Surrey’s historic town centre knows how to lay out the welcome mat with Rodeo Days events. Thursday marks the 36th annual Cloverdale Bed Races from 5:30 to 7 p.m., right after the colourful kids’ decorated bike parade (approximately 5:40 p.m.) and a demonstration by competitors in the Second Annual World RoundUp Freestyle Skateboard Competition. It’s all happening on 176A Street between 57 and 58 Avenues. Will Team Turkey’s Party Makers claim their fourth Bed Pan trophy in a row? Or will The Vault finally win the coveted title, meaning Rob ‘Turkey’ Kielesinski will finally have to pucker up? There’s a lot riding on the answer – something about a longrunning gentlemen’s bet with local restauranteur Aron Hotell and a kicky bright blue dress. The races are split into four divisions: men, women, media and hospitality. There are also prizes for best dressed. Don’t miss the 16th Annual Chili Cookoff at Clover Square Village Friday May 17 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Sample home cooked recipes by Cloverdale’s business

America, interning at a classic French restaurant that later hired him. He returned to B.C. to work as the executive chef at Sonora resort from 2004 to 2010, and now develops menu items for Cactus Club Cafe restaurants, a role that sees him playing host to weekly viewing parties on Top Chef Canada nights. “I watch with a room full of 100 to 120 people. It’s nerve-wracking because I’ve never seen what they’re going to use, and how they’re going to edit it,” he says, adding some of his fellow contestants are coming across on TV as “a little more abrasive” and “dramatic” than they might appear in real life. He’s won five out of eight elimination challenges. “I’ve been doing well so far,” he says, careful not to reveal any spoilers, but he allows there were plenty of sleepless nights while taping. “You never knew what they were going to throw at you next.” In Stowe, Cloverdale residents have one of their own to cheer on for the four remaining episodes. When he and his wife were looking for a house, they chose to settle down in Clayton, rather than some-

and service organizations, and vote for your favourite. Kids, enter the colouring contest for a chance to win a Webkinz toy from Tricia’s Gems. The World Round-Up Freestyle Skateboarders will also be on hand with demonstrations of their amazing skills. The Cloverdale Rodeo Parade is Saturday May 18 from 10 a.m. to noon, and kicks off with the annual pancake breakfast in Hawthorne Square. This year’s parade boasts a contingent of Shriners two city blocks long. There’s also horses,

floats, antique cars and trucks, scooters, golf carts, marching bands, clowns and dignitaries, along with Dora the Explorer, Dinotown, sports groups and more. More than 1,200 participants with over 80 registered entries have signed up this year. The parade starts on Hwy 10 at 177B Street heading west. It turns north on 176 Street from Hwy 10 to 58A Avenue, where it takes a short jog east to 176A Street and continues north to 60th Avenue. From there it’s east to 177B Street, where it turns south to the end of the route at 58 Avenue.

where closer to his job in downtown Vancouver. “It’s a really beautiful place to raise a family,” he says. He’ll be returning to his old high school on May 28, joined by Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts and School District 36 representatives. He and the students will prepare a three or four course lunch. He’s looking forward to getting back in the

school’s kitchen. “It was because of that start at Tweedsmuir, that I’m kind of where I am today,” he says, praising the school’s culinary program, a trades program with a co-op component that enabled him to land a job at the Hotel Vancouver, and setting him on his skyrocketing career path. Win or lose Top Chef Canada, and he’s not saying, Stowe is glad he did it, and notes that the

experience has led to more opportunities to teach people of all ages about food, and explain the ins-and-outs of how restaurants work. “I’ve met kids six to seven years old who watch that show,” he adds. “They’ve done a good job appealing to everyone.”

– The 36th annual Cloverdale Rodeo Parade gets underway at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 18.

opposing the planting of GMOs be considered the same as the shark fin ban. GMOs are most definitely present in Surrey. I should point out that the Richmond legal department reviewed the resolution and allowed it to be passed. The AFSAC has also stated verbally that a resolution is symbolic and therefore a waste of time. I could not disagree more. Passing a resolution will help raise awareness of the health and environmental risks. There is widespread ignorance of GMOs in Surrey. Passing a resolution sends a powerful message to both senior levels of government that Surrey has concerns about GMOs. A resolution would also help maintain the integrity of organic farms as organic by definition is non GMO. in Richmond. The non GMO resolution has served to keep GMOs out of the Powell River Regional District by simply not making them welcome. Lastly the AVICC, Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities, comprising 51 municipalities has just passed a GMO free resolution. In addition 14 other jurisdictions have done as well. They did not see it as a waste of time. I understand Council has yet to be convinced to pass a similar resolution, but many people and many municipalities are very concerned about the spread of GMOs. I have 800 signatures supporting a GE Free Surrey. I have not discussed the reasons for my concerns and would be very happy to share them with you. I look forward to your response. Camping meets haute cuisine at cook-off By Jennifer Lang The aptly-named Team Winterfriends donned toques and parkas in their quest to make the perfect bowl of chili at last week’s high school chili cookoff. About 30 teams from Surrey, Coquitlam, Vancouver and as far away as Merritt, B.C., took part in the 13th annual event, hosted by Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds. Team Winterfriends – comprised of Ashley Bucholtz, Kelly Kooner, Melanie Lachance and Kerri Kooner – chose a winter-inspired recipe that called for chocolate as one of the ingredients, and wore ensembles more suited to the ski slopes than the Stetson Bowl. They were one of five teams fielded by Lord Tweedsmuir at the May 9 event, where teams started cooking at 8:30

The Kidz Zone has a fun-filled lineup of entertainment, including Judi the Manners Lady, and 18,000 square feet of games, interactive displays, songs, dance, art and more. Outside, the new Cone Zone Go-Kart ride, presented by Cloverdale-based Mainroad Group, will teach future drivers (youth aged 10 to 16) road safety in a construction zone. “I think it’s a really exciting event,” says Claypool, who notes there will be actual construction equipment on site, including trucks, cranes and roadside workers. The attraction launches the Cone Zone Safety Campaign, coinciding with the start of summer road construction season. Bob Nielsen and the team at Mainroad Group realized it’s an ideal time to teach people about how to legally, safely and efficiently navigate construction areas, something that’s absent from most drivers ed courses. “I think that’s going to be a great, interactive program,” Claypool says. The nightly Youth Stage and 13 to 18 Teen Night Club (Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 6 to 10 p.m.) is a new feature aimed at teenagers. Organized by Cloverdale DJ Carson Hoy, the stage will feature live local talent, followed by a night club with a massive sound system and light show – again,

free with grounds admission. “We want everyone to have fun, all ages,” Claypool says. That’s what we’re trying to cater to.” For those 19 and older, there’s nightly live entertainment in the Longhorn Saloon with The Ken McCoy Band and Dr. Strangelove. There’s also live performances on the outdoor stage all weekend. New, higher-quality food vendors have been lined up for the food court, and the fairground layout has been improved. And none of it could happen without an army of about 300 dedicated volunteers who work behind-the-scenes and as ambassadors to ensure everything runs smoothly. “We have some people who basically come in from Hope,” Claypool says. “They drive in from Hope for our meetings, and during the rodeo they camp on the grounds for the week. That’s dedication.” The Cloverdale Rodeo, Claypool is rightfully proud to note, is the biggest community event as an economic generator in the

City of Surrey. “We have a staff of about 10 people, and the rest is volunteers. It’s a nice thing to be part of,” says Claypool, who is a volunteer himself. He has a favourite expression: “Hey, this ain’t my first rodeo.” In fact, he doesn’t know how many years he’s been involved on the board of directors. “This is something like my 15th or 16th rodeo,” he says, admitting he’s genuinely lost count. Despite logging hundreds of volunteer hours (as do others on the board of directors) each year, Claypool is still as excited as he was as a young boy sneaking into the rodeo each year. With the Cloverdale Rodeo’s combination of the tried and true rodeo events combined with new attractions and events added every year, it’s easy to see why he’s still as excited as he was as a youngster. “I’m looking forward to it,” he says.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE By Addison Hubert, Cloverdale Chamber President

HOWDY FOLKS!

VOICE

It’s time to dust off your Cowboy Hats and Boots and put on your Rodeo Smile, its Rodeo Week in Cloverdale! Starting Thurs., May 16th 5pm - 7pm with our Favorite Family Event is the 36th Annual Bed Races & Decorated Kids Bike Parade. Last year’s champions “Turkey Party Makers” will be returning to defend their title. On Fri., May 17th from 4:30pm - 6:30pm is the 16th Annual Chili Cook off at Clover Square Village. The event features live entertainment and demos from the World Roundup Skateboarding Competition. Past Chili winner Rusty’s Pub will also return to defend their title. The main event is the 67th Annual Cloverdale Rodeo & Country Fair (May 17th - 20th). On Saturday morning is the famous Rodeo Parade which starts at 10am in the historic Cloverdale downtown with a number of pancake breakfasts and BBQ’s around town. This year a number of top cowboys will be competing for $320,000 in cash prizes. There will also be a courtesy shuttle bus on Saturday and Sunday running around the town centre picking up Rodeo visitors and locals. The midway is back, along with the Classic Car Show, the Kids Zone, Agri-Zone and whole lot of boot stompin entertainment. PS: Our thoughts and prayers to get better are with our own “Champion of Cloverdale” - Bill Reid who remains in the hospital. It won’t be the same Rodeo without him. “Keep your stick on the ice Bill!”

Living wage climbs By Jeff Nagel An annual recalculation of the socalled “living wage” for Metro Vancouver concludes two working parents must each now earn $19.62 an hour to adequately support a family of four. The calculation, published by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, estimates the wage including benefits required for a family of two full-time earners and two young children to meet basic expenses, including rent, child care, food and transportation, once government taxes, credits, deductions and subsidies are taken into account. “The living wage lifts families out of poverty, but it’s based on a bare-bones budget without the extras many of us take for granted,” said report co-author Iglika Ivanova. The living wage this year is up 48 cents from $19.14 an hour in 2012 – a jump of 2.5 per cent or nearly double

Democracy lesson CONTRIBUTED PHOTO

Elianna Van Raalte, a Grade 7 student at Cloverdale’s William of Orange Christian School, pictured with student voting clerk Maria Dykstra, casts a ballot Monday in the Student Vote Program. the rate of inflation. That increase is attributed in part to a $28 per month jump in a family’s transportation costs, due to rising costs to own and operate a car and a 13 per cent jump this year in TransLink fares. Rising child care costs, food prices and a four per cent jump in Medical Services Plan premiums were also to blame. Metro’s living wage has climbed from $16.74 in 2008, when the calculation was first made. The CCPA and other advocacy groups are part of a Metro Vancouver Living Wage for Families campaign that urges employers to pay wages that reflect the real cost of living in their communities. They also want government to do more by expanding the stock of affordable housing and pursuing universal child care, national pharmacare or dental coverage programs for children and lower income families.

Amy Wan and Denise Mok are also completing their second Kwantlen Fashion Design program year. Despite being cousins, their fashion choices were unrelated. Influenced by Madame Grès, a Parisienne whose clients included Jaqueline Kennedy and the Duchess of Windsor, Wan incorporated

Selecting a dramatic midnight blue satin, she demonstrated a wasp-waisted cocktail dress reminiscent of the 1940s. Unlike Dior, however, Mok’s design was more fabric conscious. During WW11 Dior was severely censured for his cavalier use of yards of fabric – a luxury rationed to the average citizen. Browsing the collection, there the unmis-

Negin Izad Negahdari transports museum visitors into current 21st Century news with a show-stopping take on a 3-D printer polymer liquid fashion statement. For me, the fashion names are a step back in time to my history, too. Like author Paul Gallico’s Mrs. ‘Arris Goes to Paris, the delightful London charwoman who dreamed of owning a Dior gown, my generation (forgive me) ‘swooned’ over stars sporting not just Haute Couture, but the stunning fabrics now often seen only in museums.
