Miss Trail 2013 crowned Sheri Regnier

West Kootenay Advertiser

It was an evening of cheers and plenty of happy tears. On Friday night, Cheyanne Friess, Miss Italo Canadese, was crowned Miss Trail 2013 while Emily Dawson, Miss Trail Legion, was selected as Trail’s princess. It was a night filled with honours for Friess who was also named Miss Congeniality (an award fellow candidates vote on); and presented with an award for “most dedicated”, in recognition of complete and uncompromising dedication. “I am so happy and excited,” she said just after being crowned. “I am most looking forward to travelling around B.C., meeting people, and representing Trail.” Friess said that the

most important lesson she has learned in the Trail Ambassador Program so far, is to “just be yourself.” “Over the course of the program I never changed who I was, and that is a big strength to learn,” she said. “It is important to hold your head high and be confident in yourself.” After a busy weekend of leading the 50th Silver City Days celebration, Friess is looking forward to her first duty as

Miss Trail, which is a “Little Miss” pageant in New Denver this weekend. Emily Dawson was recognized for her writing, speaking and talent achievements and received the History Award, Knights of Pythias Speech Award, and Benson Oil Talent Award for highland dancing. “I have always loved travelling B.C. and meeting new people, so I am really excited,” she said. The Canadian Border Services Agency has been busy at crossings in the Okanagan and Kootenay District (OK&K District). A May 10 press release detailed some of the

enforcement activities that have transpired lately. Since January, the OK&K District has declined entry to over 300 individuals under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. Many travellers

seeking to enter Canada were inadmissible due to criminal records found during background checks. During the month of April alone, CBSA officers in the OK&K District made 14 weapon seizures. Maria Ivancic,

A .357 revolver and .22 pistol seized at the Roosville border on April 6. A Canadian resident was charged with six counts related to firearms smuggling and possession. His next court appearance is May 21, 2013 in Cranbrook.

CBSA communications advisor for the Pacific Region was reached by telephone on Friday, May 10. “It’s been a busy spring,” said Ivancic. “Most of our undeclared firearms — at the land borders at least — are usually personal firearms that travellers from the U.S. are bringing through to Canada and beyond.” On April 18, for example, a U.S. resident seeking entry to Canada via the Osoyoos crossing (in transit to Alaska) declared no firearms, only ammunition to an officer at the primary inspection line. During an examination of the traveller’s truck and enclosed trailer, however, a number of items prohibited in Canada were found, including: a .25 calibre semi-automatic pistol, a set of brass knuckles, two switchblade knives, one large twin drum magazine, 41 high capacity rifle magazines and 19 high capacity pistol magazines.

The traveller was arrested for smuggling a prohibited firearm, prohibited weapons and prohibited devices, which were all seized. But it’s not always Americans. In Osoyoos on April 4, a Canadian resident was examined by officers while returning from a trip to the United States. A search of the vehicle discovered firearm parts for two fully automatic machine guns hidden throughout his motorhome. Both guns require import permits that were not obtained. So far this year, Border Services Officers in the OK&K District have also conducted 151 non-weapon seizures including narcotics, vehicles, and other miscellaneous goods. Info on prohibited items, duties and taxes, acceptable ID and what to declare at Canadian border crossings can be viewed the CBSA website: http:// www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/ cpr-crp-eng.html.

A look at three cities that weren’t greg nesteroff West Kootenay Advertiser

Eleventh in a series on West Kootenay-Boundary place names. Today we’ll look at three cities that had no business calling themselves that. Bannock was a staple food of early prospectors and also a short-lived settlement on the North Fork of the Kettle River, first mentioned in the Cascade Record of Dec. 3, 1898: “A new village called Bannock City has sprung up at the foot of Pathfinder Mountain, near some promising claims and several cabins have already been built.” The Minister of Mines report for 1899 described Bannock City as “merely a collection of a few cabins … but boasting a hotel and bar.” Robert Lindholm built the hotel at Hornet Creek and ran it with the help of brother-in-law Nils Berquist. As R.M. Simbrec wrote in Kettle River Journal, it was an apt name, “for lots of his customers were prospectors, used to eating their own bannock.” Bannock City never

Ad for the Bear Lake City townsite from the Nelson Miner of November 12, 1892.

amounted to much, but remained a polling station and received occasional newspaper mentions through 1915. The Grand Forks Gazette of August 8, 1935 called mine owner and railway section foreman Tim Townsend “the Mayor of Bannock City.” (Townsend was also namesake of Timville, another place we’ll eventually get to in this series.) Even more obscure was Basin City, whose existence rated a single newspaper mention. According to Ghost Towns and Mining Camps of the Boundary Country, in 1898 the Peterson brothers, owners of a hotel in the Arrow Lakes boom town of Brooklyn, were “building a road house at Basin City, six miles beyond Gladstone, where they have also applied for permission

to purchase a townsite. The location is where the trail strikes off into the Burnt Basin, and ought to be a good one.” (Author Garnet Basque didn’t say where he found this.) Comparatively speaking, Bear Lake City, between Kaslo and New Denver, was famous. The townsite was first advertised in the Nelson Miner of October 22, 1892. Gilbert Malcolm Sproat, sometimes called the father of Nelson, took creative license in declaring: “Bear Lake City glitters in the reflection of innumerable surrounding silver lodes ... It will not surprise me if a Bear Lake City lot is worth $5,000 within a few years.” It would be many decades before that was true. The Nelson Tribune on December 22 of the same year

declared: “Bear Lake City … is a townsite, not a town and perhaps never will be.” Bear Lake was home to a modest hotel founded by Gorman West and run later by the legendary Scotty Mitchell, who caught fish, tended fruit trees, grew vegetables, and raised chickens — but only served boiled eggs, bread, and jam in his dining room. Bear Lake was a stop along the Kaslo and Slocan Railway in 1895, but by 1914 the name was changed to Giegerich in honour of pioneering merchant Henry Giegerich. The names of Bear Lake and nearby Fish Lake were also somehow transposed — so the Bear Lake hotel and townsite were actually on the south shore of what’s now Fish Lake. A post office application for Bear Lake was submitted in 1892 but denied. A Giegerich post office was slated to open in 1914, according to Don Blake in Valley of the Ghosts, but for some reason it never did and instead the Zincton post office opened a few months later — in Scotty’s hotel at Giegerich. It closed in 1932.

Pines Bible Camp adjusts emergency protocols Karl Yu West Kootenay Advertiser

After a tragic windstorm took the life of a camper and caused destruction at Pines Bible Camp last July, officials are taking steps to ensure it doesn’t happen again. First and foremost, camp director Gene Krahn said emergency protocol has been adjusted in the event another situation like the one that befell the camp in July happens again. “We’ve gone through all our emergency procedures and adapted them to a broader scope of possibilities,” explained Krahn. “We have fire drills and all those kinds of things but a disaster like (last July), you’re not necessarily prepared for.” Krahn said staff defaulted to emergency procedures that

With an ideal location at an ideal time for 11 years running, the BC Old Time Fiddlers #9 staging of a summer fiddle camp at Selkirk College continues to prove that fiddle music is alive and well. One of the most appealing facets of the genre is the remarkable, open-ended age span of those involved. In what other activity would it be possible for a child to learn and perform, for example, along with a great grandparent? Such is the appeal, and such is the challenge and potential enrichment of fiddle music. The camp is set to run this summer from July 15-19, but there’s a special incentive for signing up before the end of May – namely, saving money – early bird tuition rates apply for the balance of this month. Check out the online information at kootenayfiddlers.com for all the details. Once again the camp is to be overseen by the revered Gord Stobbe from Chezzetcook, N.S. -

When Patti starts playing her fiddle the musical spirits instantly come alive in whatever room she is playing. The Kootenay fiddle camp is obvious-

ly a treasure trove of inspiration for musicians of all ages and abilities, but it’s pretty swell for your average acoustic music lover as well, as there will be a few opportunities for the students and instructors to cut loose with what they’ve been working on, at camp, or over the years. Again, check the online information for public performance occasions. Summer fiddlin’… a whole lot to get excited about.

He pointed out that with the July windstorm there were perfectly healthy trees with healthy root systems that were uprooted. “When we had professionals come in to do the logging, some of the trees they cut off, the roots popped back up straight, and that’s how healthy these trees were,” said Krahn. “It’s hard to imagine every possible scenario of what might go wrong, but we do our best and train people to think clearly and concisely in any kind of an emergency.”

Steven said. “The area has been teetering on the edge of being really strong for a number of years and we were close.” March is expected to be near the record as well, she said, but the numbers aren’t tabulat-

Blooming now!

Two things have combined to give the Rossland accommodation industry its best month ever in seven years. Epic snow and media attention allowed February to break all records for total accommodation revenue in the city as $568,390 dollars rolled through the tills of the hotels, motels, bed and breakfast’s and condominiums. The previous month saw the record for accommodation revenue—$492,000 in February of 2006—broken at $526,212. Tourism Rossland’s executive director, Deanne Steven, said the 2013 numbers compared to the years previous really stand out and illustrate what a great year the city had. She pointed to the announcement of the opening of cat skiing at Red Mountain Resort, combined with a high profile story in the New York Times— ranking Rossland as the eighth among the newspaper’s 46 places to go—and winning the Powder Magazine’s Ski Town Throwdown

along with Nelson’s Whitewater Ski Resort as the best ski town in North America. “It was a combination of really great news, great snow and then a lot of attention in the press this year,”

Horoscope Michael O’Connor

for the

Week

May 17, 2013

Tip of the Week: The Sun enters Gemini on May 20. It does so just 71 minutes prior to the next exact Square Aspect between Uranus and Pluto. This is the 3rd official connection of seven between these two power players. The conjunction between them, which represents the seed event, occurred in 1965! Now, after 48 years they are in the first of their more challenging aspects, the Square. True to the angles of the shape that reveals the measurement of the angle or 90 degrees, this implies what can be described as a very hard or sharp turn in the road. The energies of planets in Square Aspect tend to be at cross purposes. As is true with building blocks, the square, which is the basis of a cube, is an ideal shape for new constructions. Yet, it is the building process that can be arduous. In one’s Natal Chart, A Square Aspect indicates a dynamic life lesson theme which is generally ‘hard won’. It represents where we have some real work to do. At best, Squares produce a lot of energy. At worst they indicate ‘blocks’ or delays and issues. A pro-active attitude and approach is ideal. Yet, the overcoming of the challenge can endure for a lifetime, if ignored, denied or repressed, which is quite common, is labelled a weakness, produces stress, strife and even illness, injury and/or casualty of all possible sorts. More to the moment, we are also in mid-stride between the recent Solar Eclipse and the impending Lunar Eclipse. The combined influence of this charged aspect and the eclipses will be one of dynamic activity where new action, choice and construction comes to the fore to replace the old, thus presenting an indelible blow and challenge to the status quo.

Asserting your authority to break through convention has and continues to be a core theme. Changes are happening and they are pivotal. Certain challenges now are calling for some quick thinking. Your ability to be versatile and to multi-task is extra important. Avoid trying to rush the outcome. Rather do the rounds and enjoy a creative process.

Commitment remains an important theme these days. Realizing your dreams, goals and plans requires that you have some. A wide spectrum of interests and duties are pushing you to draw upon your resources and talents. If you respond well this can produce abundant returns. The main challenge is not to scatter your focus.

Your energy levels are on the rise. Waves of inspiration are a source of enthusiasm. This trend will continue for the next few weeks so intend to make the most of it. Your will and determination to learn new skills or gather knowledge for practical application is a deeper long-term theme. Extra emphasis upon security themes is a call to count all your blessings.

Building strong bonds of friendship is ever important. This includes being your own best friend, perhaps above all. With healthy self-regard well-established you can feel more confident to take risks. These may include financial investments. All of the above are leading you to do inner work and/or study and research behind the scenes.

Some promising activations in your career and social standing are yours to enjoy. Yet, you also have to be disciplined and do the work. This includes perseverance and pushing through fears. Working the angles includes accessing key connections and perhaps making new ones. Just keep putting it out there. Don’t worry about any no’s, just stay focused on the yeses!

You have begun to look to the bigger picture. This visionary approach has a practical twist. You want to realize greater success. While earning more is a likely goal, increasing your skill levels is also implied. Asserting a more strategic and disciplined focus is woven into the plot. Clarifying your objectives and managing your time better will help, a lot.

Money is not what life is all about. But especially if you are lacking in that department it will take on added importance. Who has what you want and need and needs and wants what you have? Exchanges of energies, talents and resources are the game of life and you are being called out to play. Get the word out, you are in the mood to wheel and deal.

The seeds of new relationships are beginning to sprout. You have been busily working the angles. A learning curve is implied. The follow-up requires that you tend to your garden. Weed and feed is the basic formula. Thinning is important too. This can be a delicate process especially when the sprouts are people with feelings, opinions and voices.

All being well, you are doing the work and whistling all the while. Clearing the old to make way for the new is implied. Establishing a firm foundation that will withstand the tests of time is in the script. It could be real estate, or attitudes, or healthy rhythms and habits. Whatever your focus, the word improvement should be written across your banner.

A playful, sporting, risky and gambling mood prevails. To this end you are extra focused on the details. Even against all odds you may feel confident and faithful about your approach. That you are a force to reckon with to others and something of a shaker is all part of the script. Yet you are probably wise to diversify your interests. Have a back-up plan, or two.

Some moving and shaking close to home is a source of excitement. At best, it is spurring a creative streak. It may also be a source of discussion and communication exchange. Your attention will be drawn to a variety of fronts. The tasks require a dynamic, even revolutionary assertion. Yet you may simultaneously feel tired, whimsical and evasive. Take a varied approach to stay alert and amused.

Your drive ambition and confidence levels are all running high. Inspired by beauty, the cultivation of talents and the prospects of abundance, prosperity and advancement, you feel determined to achieve a lot. This represents a prime opportunity to make a break away to get ahead. These are all manifestations of much deeper changes that signify rebirth and/or reinvention.

Heroic hound wags its way into the animal hall of fame Trail staff West Kootenay Advertiser

Trail Briefs Heroic dog in Hall of Fame Heroes come in all shapes and sizes and at the 2013 Purina Animal Hall of Fame ceremony (May 6) the four-legged were honoured including one from Trail. Angie Prime and her dog Vicious were in Toronto for the

ceremony on Monday after Vicious came to her rescue when a cougar invaded their Sunningdale home last August. “Now in its 45th year, the Purina Animal Hall of Fame annually shares amazing life-saving stories and incredible acts of courage shown by pets and service animals across the country,” said Mary Siemiesz, executive director of the Purina PetCare Legacy in a

In 2005, Ty, an eight-year-old Siamese cat was honoured for saving his Trail owner’s life after she collapsed with heart failure. In 2007, golden retriever Jango was hailed for alerting her Trail family to a house fire. In 2009, Jarod, a chow chow, saved its owner and a fellow pet from a bear attack

press release. “The tenacity of our 2013 inductees to rescue and protect people from harm – whether it’s a wild animal, house fire, criminal or a medical emergency – showcases the connection animals have to humans and the physical risks they will take to keep them safe.” Vicious is the fourth Greater Trail animal to gain induction into the Purina Animal Hall of Fame.

Miss Trail 2013 Continued from P. A3

A large crowd was gathered in Charles Bailey Theatre to watch the pageant, which opened with a presentation of past royalty. Twenty-seven past queens, beginning from 1951 to 2011, appeared on the stage to give a royal wave to the crowd, and re-

ceive a bouquet of flowers, and small token of thanks from Mayor Dieter Bogs. “Every year I look forward to the pageant,” said Bogs. “And this year I cannot thank enough all the queens who came back to Trail for this very special event, the 50th anniversary of Silver City Days.”

Council’s decision, made during the strategic planning meeting on Thursday, is not the final say. “The final decision on whether or not the building will be constructed will be made by the Trail citizens,” said Bogs. During the next municipal election, which is coming up in November 2014, the public will have the opportunity to vote for a loan authorization bylaw to provide the authority required for council to borrow money needed to proceed with the detailed design and construction of the new building.

Gibson, board chair. “My only concern is that the lot is only 7,500 square feet, compared to Fields which was 10,000, so we are going to have to do some talking in this initial stage.” Mayor Bogs said constructing a new building will offer the public a new and modern facility in a good location. “Buying a piece of property (Fields) and then having to renovate it to today’s standards was too expensive,” he explained. “It just didn’t make any sense, and this new library museum will definitely be a two-story building.”

A new library proposal might mean the start of a new story. On Monday (May 6), Trail city council announced its decision to dedicate the land previously occupied by the Eagle’s Building for the construction of a new Public Library and Historical Museum in downtown Trail. “I am, as I always have been with regards to a new library, cautiously optimistic,” said Barbara

Community The lighthouse gets a bath ahead of its fresh new coat of paint Nelson staff West Kootenay Advertiser

The Pilot Bay Lighthouse underwent a spring cleaning earlier this month in preparation for the summer season on the East Shore. On May 1, Eric Sargent, Maurice de St Jorre and Bill Bryce from the Friends of West Kootenay Parks Society were joined on the project by se-

nior ranger Tom Roos and area supervisor Hugh Ackroyd from BC Parks and Wildfire Unit Crew, LeeAnne Fournier-Beck, Viktor Olynyk and Orry Grant. The crew spent the day at the Pilot Bay Lighthouse pressure washing the building down in preparation for painting. The first snag of the day occurred when, to everyone’s surprise,

the ferry was switched over to the Balfour at the 8:10 a.m. sailing and one of the team had to leave their vehicle behind. Fortunately, all of the supplies that needed to be taken over made it on. The Unit Crew set up their truck and pumps at the trailhead and laid out hose for the pressure washer (they also pulled the washer up the hill for

us) while Bryce and Sargent suited up and got ready to spray. And then the second snag. The pressure washer took most of the dirt off, but not all so everyone set to work with brushes loosening up the dirt so it could be hosed off. It took around four hours of work to clean, but now it’s ready for paint. Assisting with the

ladder logistics were Mike Jeffrey, Garth Norris and John Smith. The Pilot Bay Lighthouse can be seen from the Kootenay Lake Ferry on the East Shore. It is located in the Pilot Bay Provincial Park and can be accessed by hiking trails along the Pilot Peninsula. Primarily marine accessed, the park can be reached by road.

If you’d like to help, the Friends of West Kootenay Parks are looking for volunteers who could be ready on a few days notice to spend some time painting. The Friends anticipate it may take up to six days to finish the job (weather permitting) so any time you can commit would be welcome. People who could work mid-week would be especially

appreciated. Contact Bryce at 250-357-9734 and leave your name and phone number or by email at contactus@ fwkp.kics.bc.ca. For more information about the Friends of West Kootenay Parks Society, visit their website at fwkp. kics.bc.ca. Please see photo on page B6

WATER SMART

Take the Challen ge. and Win .. !

Water Smart is a program adopted by the City of Castlegar in partnership with the Columbia Basin Trust with the purpose of reducing community water use by 20% by 2015. This year’s ambassador program is being led, again, by Suzanne Fordyce who can be reached • between 9am and 9pm Mon-Sat by phone at 250-687-4602 • email anytime waterambassador@castlegar.ca • face book page “Castlegar Water Smart” for current and ongoing news and contest information at: www.facebook.com/groups/573599179339978/ • for a broad sense of the CBT Water Smart initiative, check out the website: www.cbt.org/watersmart/ The 2013 Water Smart season, in Castlegar, kicks off at the Garden and Nature Festival where Suzanne will be onsite to answer questions, provide informative literature, and promote Drinking Water Week. The water we drink is, most of the time, the same water we use to flush toilets and sprinkle our landscapes. An awareness of the path our water takes from source through treatment and to our homes is an important step in water conservation. Water Smart is proud to be involved with Castlegar’s residents, a capable and conscientious community, to provide tools and tips for how much water we really need to use in our yards and gardens. Contact Suzanne to arrange an appointment between May 13 and August 31.

Screen hearing early submitted Interior Health Authority

For many of us, waking up to the sounds of birds chirping is a sure sign of spring! Perhaps then it’s no surprise that May is designated as Speech and Hearing Month in Canada. Speech and hearing may seem an unlikely pair at first glance, but learning to speak is usually accompanied by the ability to hear. In fact, communication skills start to develop as soon as a child is born. Just spend some time around infants and young children and you’ll be convinced that the first five years are the most critical period for growth. Like little sponges, they soak up stimulation with every sense available! The key to preventing or overcoming a communication problem is the early identification of hearing, speech and language disorders. Without early screening, many

babies with hearing loss go undetected because it’s not easy to identify a hearing loss just by watching a baby’s behaviour. When a baby can’t hear well, he or she may have problems learning to talk and develop language skills. Early screening can reduce the language delays that a child with hearing loss may experience by connecting the child and family with the support and care they need. Even if no one in your family has a hearing loss, it is still important to have your baby’s hearing screened. Many hospitals in BC are providing hearing screening shortly after babies are born. For babies who are not screened while in the hospital, hearing screening is offered at numerous public health centres across Interior Health. Communication is what links us to our world yet our ability to communicate is an easy gift to take for

granted. According to the Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (CASLPA), the ability to communicate effectively with others is the very foundation of a child’s social, emotional and educational development. Hearing screening helps your child become the best communicator they can be. Take advantage of the early hearing screening program and if you think your child has a hearing problem, call your local health centre and ask to speak to an audiologist or talk to a public health nurse or your family doctor. potential exposure to rabies. Treatment, involving a two week long period of vaccinations, must be administered as soon as possible after exposure. “Between four and eight per cent of the bats that are tested after coming into contact with people are found to have the rabies virus,” said Jennifer Jeyes, Communicable Disease Specialist with Interior Health. “Most bat-human encounters occur when bats get into houses or summer cabins, usually through open windows, doors, chimneys, or narrow cracks. Attics are a favourite bat refuge. If you

come into contact with live or dead bats, it is very important to avoid touching them.” Interior Health advises that all contact with bats should be taken seriously. “Anyone who has come into contact with a bat should call the local public health unit or their doctor right away even if you can’t see bite marks or scratches,” said Jeyes. “Bats have tiny sharp teeth and claws, so scratches or bites may not be visible but could still be there. People should not wait for symptoms to appear. Get checked out as soon as possible – early treatment is crucial to prevent the disease from progressing.”

Beware: bat-rabies connection

submitted Interior Health Authority

The long weekend is just around the corner. For many of us this means it’s time to get ready for summer. Planning to do some spring cleaning? Bringing your summer gear out of storage? Heading to the great outdoors to open the cabin? It’s important to know that activities like these can result in contact with bats, the primary carrier of the rabies virus in B.C. Rabies is a very serious disease that affects the nervous system. If not treated in time, rabies is almost always fatal. Last year, 39 people in the region were treated for
