In a shocker of an election result, the BC Liberals defied the pollsters and won a majority government Tuesday. That’s despite the New Democrats gaining an additional seat in Burnaby, bringing its total to three out of four. In Burnaby-North, Liberal incumbent Richard Lee was the only candidate from his party to prevent an all-out NDP sweep of

the city. By defeating the NDP’s Janet Routledge by 833 votes, Lee maintained the riding as a Liberal bastion. It was Lee’s fourth consecutive election victory dating back to 2001 when the NDP were swept from power. Over in Burnaby-Lougheed, the NDP’s Jane Shin won her seat by 523 votes over Liberal challenger Ken Kramer. The victory in the riding vacated by the retiring Liberal Harry Bloy came despite repeated questions raised by the Liberals over Shin’s medical and academic qualifications.

As local politicians go, Lee said with a laugh Wednesday “it’s a little bit lonely.” His win over the NDP’s Janet Routledge, and the Liberals’ loss of Burnaby-Lougheed now makes him the only Liberal politician in Burnaby at the civic, provincial or federal levels. He seems to be the only person standing between the NDP and a complete sweep of all seats in the city. “More diversity would be healthier,” Lee said of Burnaby’s political makeup. “I will try to be a bridge between [non-NDP] people and those ideas at the other levels of government in Burnaby.”

Burnaby-Deer Lake’s incumbent New Democrat MLA Kathy Corrigan won her riding but the focus now will be on the BC Liberals’ come-from-behind win despite Premier Christy Clark losing her own Vancouver-Point Grey seat. “It was pretty stunning actually, to see that result, but I guess the people of B.C. spoke,” said Corrigan, who defeated Liberal Shian Gu by about 700 votes. “The really ugly American-style of negative campaign devoid of facts, it works apparently.” The NDP will take a look at the campaign “and analyze it probably to death,” she said. “I think it was clear that the negative ads left a real impression in the minds of voters, and I was even hearing that on the doorstep.

Unfair as it was, it did have an impact so I think that made a difference across the province.” As for whether the NDP will have to follow that model, Corrigan stressed that there’s a distinct difference between being personally negative against the candidates and pointing out their record in office. “Maybe we didn’t do that well enough, pointing out the negative record of the Liberals,” she said. “Maybe the people of B.C. over the next while will take a look at it and say, ‘wow, we just re-elected a government that has done this, this, this and this. And we didn’t like them for that a couple of months ago but somehow that was lost in the campaign.’” In Burnaby-Edmonds, perhaps the NDP’s safest seat in the city, BC Liberal candidate Jeff Kuah paid a visit to incumbent Raj Chouhan’s campaign office to offer his congratulations. Watching the election results come in Tuesday night, Burnaby-Douglas MP Kennedy Stewart was less than impressed with the work of pollsters in the lead-up to voting day. According to a medical coalition, Canadian children 13 and younger shouldn’t be exposed to marketing of unhealthy foods and beverages. Its aim is to reduce the increasing number of overweight children. The Canadian Medical Association, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Hypertension Canada, College of Family Physicians of Canada and others are calling on food companies to immediately stop marketing foods high in fats, added sugars or sodium to children. The groups say the Supreme Court of Canada ruled in 1989 that advertisers should not be able to capitalize upon children’s credulity and that advertising directed at young children is manipulative. However, food companies in Canada, except in Quebec, are not required by law to restrict unhealthy food and beverage marketing to children. So they spend billions of dollars marketing to kids because they know it works. And 75 per cent of children today are overweight. If a ban was enacted, restrictions would apply to TV, internet, radio, magazines, mobile phones, and video games, as well as product placement, cross-promotions, school or event sponsorships, and viral marketing. The proposed advertising restriction includes characters or mascots promoting sugary cereals. You could require more warning labels, or add a tax on such products, too, but doing the latter hasn’t stopped people from smoking or drinking. The fall and rise of the BC Liberals What the hell happened? That’s been the question that’s been wagging jaws since the moment it was clear the BC Liberals had won the election Tuesday night. Defying polls and pundits, the big question was how could all the predictions have been so wrong. Some say Christy Clark successfully became the first female to be elected premier in B.C. because she had a simple message and repeatedly hammered it on every tour stop she made in the province: Strong economy, secure tomorrow. Dix’s message was more nuanced: Change for better, one practical step at a time. It left room for people to ask, change to what? Perhaps the economy—and the looming fear that the horrible fiscal mess afflicting other countries could soon land here— is what drove many folks to plug their noses and vote for the devil they know. Lord knows the BC Liberals and Christy Clark’s leadership

left much to be desired. In press releases, the BC Liberal media machine kept a running tally of what they said Dix’s promises would cost. The message was clear, taking a page from the Social Credit W.A.C. Bennett days in B.C.: Beware the red under the bed. Some say this election proved positive campaigning doesn’t work. That Dix should have worked harder to point out the failings of the BC Liberal government, kept things like BC Rail, and cost overruns for BC Place and the Vancouver Trade and Exhibition Centre fresh in people’s minds. If there was an absence of dirt shoveled by the NDP campaign, there was also an absence of gold voters could hold onto.

Skills training? A healthy, diversified economy? If Christy Clark’s populist style and megawatt smile evoked memories of Bill Vander Zalm and inspired the wariness reserved for door-to-door salesmen, Adrian Dix’s deadpan delivery left many cold. Dix’s decision, mid-campaign, to state clear opposition to the Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion plan may be seen as a pivotal blunder. The Liberals seized on this as a sign the NDP would stifle industry (read: jobs and revenues) in B.C. It may be untrue, but as every political dog knows, messages like that stick to your fur. Meantime, though it was a staggering loss for the NDP provincially, the party’s fortunes improved a little in Burnaby with the theft of Burnaby-Lougheed from the Liberals. Beleagured MLA Harry Bloy had called it a day, and the Liberals ran a new face in Ken Kramer. Despite the damage their

missteps did to their party, it’s surprising people like Bloy continue to be involved in campaigns. He was at Kramer’s election night event, apparently telling a local news reporter she was “not welcome.” So too with Burnaby’s Brian Bonney, who was involved in the Liberals ethnic outreach scandal, and was back volunteering this month with the BurnabyLougheed campaign. Remember that ethnic outreach scandal? I, for one, was convinced that was the final nail in the BC Liberals’ fortunes. Still in Lougheed, concerning at this point is the absence of Jane Shin, the NDP’s victor. After she got flack during the campaign for irregularities in her resume—can she practise medicine or not?—and an unfortunate comment she made on a blog more than a decade ago, she all but disappeared. Election was a great disappointment Then I noticed that my voting location was relocated to further away from my home. However I was still allowed to vote in the original location after showing my I.D. Then I found out that one of the candidates on the ballot had the unfortunate name of Christine Clarke with no party affiliation listed. When I asked the scrutineer who she was, I was told that she had filed her nomination papers late and so there was no time to list her affiliation. And without an all candidates meeting, I didn’t know anything about her, nor did the scrutineer. I’ve just returned from voting in what I feel is the biggest sham election yet foisted upon us, especially in my riding of Burnaby-Lougheed. I no longer have any confidence that our elections at any level have anything to do with democracy and instead are only about perpetuating a corrupt system, thanks to Elections B.C. in this case. Having no chance to ask questions of the party leaders is bad enough, but now we have virtually no chance to ask questions of the local candidates either. First we were separated from the Burnaby North riding in 2008 without any public consultation. Then we were denied our right to personally meet the candidates at an all-candidates meeting. Meanwhile Burnaby North held four such all-candidates meetings.

While the New Democrats lost the provincial election, it did add a seat to its Burnaby base of support with Dr. Jane Shin’s victory in Burnaby-Lougheed. The riding was vacated when BC Liberal MLA Harry Bloy was forced to resign after leaking an email to a company under investigation. However, early in Shin’s campaign she came under attack

in St. Lucia in the Caribbean. Shin herself has said she never practised medicine and when she completed her medical training decided to focus on academic medicine instead. After the Liberal attacks, she kept a low profile for the rest of the campaign, with numerous media outlets noting they could not reach her for interviews. The vitriol from the Liberal side continued even on election day, when Bloy himself tweeted, “@drjaneshin. Did you come out of hiding to vote??” Bloy followed that

Man arrested in stabbing indicient A 22-year-old Burnaby man has been arrested after a domestic violence incident led to a woman being stabbed in the throat Saturday evening. On May 11 around 9 p.m., Burnaby RCMP were called to a home in the 6900-block of Adair Street. “A woman had run to her neighbour’s residence bleeding profusely from stab wounds to her neck and head,” said Burnaby RCMP Corp. Dave Reid in a press release. The woman was injured during an argument with her partner who had fled the scene on foot. The victim was taken to Royal Columbian Hospital where she was treated for her wounds. Coquitlam RCMP later located and arrested the suspect. Lorne Rose, 22, of Burnaby is charged with attempted murder and breaching bail conditions. He has been remanded in custody.

Shin’s absence a ‘challenge’ from page a8

Kramer said in an interview Wednesday that he entered the race late and had limited time to set up his campaign office and team, but still put in 18-hour days trying to get the Liberal message out. As for the negative campaign against Shin, which drew the focus away from policies and issues, Kramer said, “I took the high road for a lot of that and I did not do a lot around that element.” He did say that Shin’s absence became a challenge as she wasn’t available to respond to questions. The riding was the only one in Burnaby that didn’t hold a single all-candidates debate, he noted. With his loss, Kramer took consolation in his party winning the election overall. “We overcame all the pundits out there who told us at the beginning of the election that it couldn’t be done, we were going to be wiped out, we would be replacing our leader,” he said. Kramer will now return to his law practice and community work and admits he’s caught the political bug. “I’ll be back in four years. A story on The Land Conservancy of B.C. handing management of Eagles Estate and Baldwin House back to the City of Burnaby due to the organizations financial difficulties contained an inaccuracy. Joy Kogawa House in Vancouver is facing foreclosure but, according to a subsequent post on TLC’s website, it was never mortgage free. Burnaby’s drinking water comes from three mountainous watersheds: The Capilano Reservoir, the Seymour Reservoir and the Coquitlam Reservoir. These reservoirs are protected areas that are operated and managed by Metro Vancouver and closed to public access to prevent human caused contamination. The three large supply lakes collect water from snowmelt, creeks and streams. Metro Vancouver treats and tests the water for quality at the source before it is delivered through thousands of kilometres of pipes and water mains to Lower Mainland municipalities like Burnaby.

Liberals ran against “gold-plated” pensions in 1996 and then NDP premier Glen Clark brought in a fairer, dollarfor-dollar system. But Liberals in 2007 brought back ultragenerous pensions and let MLAs buy back missing years of service.

Premier Christy Clark said she will wait until election results are finalized and she has met with her 49 MLAs before deciding where to seek a seat to replace the one she lost Tuesday. NDP challenger David Eby defeated Clark by more than 700 votes in Vancouver-Point Grey, knocking on doors while Clark traveled the province on the leader’s tour. At a news conference Wednesday, Clark shrugged off the loss, saying the seat was closely contested when Gordon Campbell held it and also had little time to campaign there. Asked repeatedly about polls that predicted her doom, Clark noted that she discussed that briefly with Prime Minister Stephen Harper when he called to congratulate her on winning the party’s fourth term. And she offered some advice on polling to reporters who gathered at the Vancouver cabinet offices. “You guys get this stuff for free,” Clark said. “You should take it for what it’s worth.” Results don’t become official until May 27, and there could still be changes in current legislature: 50 B.C. Liberals, 33 NDP MLAs, B.C. Green Andrew Weaver and Delta South independent Vicki Huntington. Clark said she regrets the loss of cabinet ministers Ida Chong and Margaret MacDiarmid, but she is pleased to have a balance of 25 returning MLAs and 25 newcomers in the B.C. Liberal caucus.

The Shadbolt Centre is hosting a special performance with Ballet BC that runs Thursday, May 23 to Saturday, May 25. Be prepared to re-think your concept of ballet and choreography in this performance series where Ballet BC’s new work is unveiled. As Artists-in-Residence at the Shadbolt Centre over the 2012/13 season, Ballet BC’s Choreographic Series focuses on developing new choreographers and choreography from within the company, culminating in this sneak peak of their works-in-progress. This performance offers a chance for dancers within the company to explore their own creative process as choreographers. The choreographers and dancers have been based in the studios of the Shadbolt over the past year, and tasked with developing new work based on the theme of “expect the unexpected,” which they’ll perform on these three nights. Tina is working on leading a healthier life and wants to continue this with the Kin’s Green Fighters challenge. When Tina Palazzo embarked on her Kin’s Green Fighters fitness and health challenge, she was overwhelmed. She had to construct a plan to make better food choices, do more exercise, begin a blog, gear up for promotional events, on top of her daily work and family matters. “After I got off the initial shock of what I had to do, I just said to myself one step at a time,” says Tina as she heads into the home stretch of her 13-week journey. She also kept a positive attitude and surrounded herself with a solid support network. All helped keep her on track. “If we all continue to keep a positive attitude and keep trying and never quit, it will happen.”

River District opens weekly farmers market

Spring brings visitors to outdoor market Southeast Vancouver is welcoming summer with the weekly farm market at River District, ParkLane Homes’ waterfront community that covers 130 acres and includes homes, shops, green space, restaurants and community amenities. The first market took place on May 4, and saw more than 500 people come out to wander the market and purchase some goodies. “The incredible turnout is a testament to the diversity and quality of this year’s farm and artisan vendors,” says Yosh Kashara, General Manager of Sales and Marketing at ParkLane Homes. “We couldn’t be happier with the support

from the community.” Market visitor and local resident Jonathan Murkin was excited to see the market open this year. “We’ve been waiting for the market to open,” he says. “It’s a great addition to the neighbourhood.” Among the items being sold at the market are fruits and vegetables, breads, flowers, skin care and jewellery. The farm market will take place every Saturday between May 4 and October 26 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Kerr Street Plaza. Finding old-fashioned flavour at Shorewood Cottages By Kerry Vital

Everyone has fond memories of their childhood summer vacations, spending time with family and friends and playing outside for hours. Now you can make more memories with Shorewood Cottages, just minutes from the Canada-U.S. border in Birch Bay. “You get the best of both worlds,” says Chris Hughes, a local RE/ MAX broker who grew up in West Vancouver, and a partner in Compass Point Project Marketing. “It’s relaxed and quiet when you get here, but you can be at the beach in two minutes.” Shorewood is located on a sunny plateau with over eleven acres total and seven acres of private parkland and trails, so outdoor activity will be a large part of your life. There are a variety of two- and three-bedroom floorplans available, ranging from 1,082 to over 1,500 square feet. The cottages “are high-end from a finishing perspective, but exceptional value,” Hughes says. “These are real residences you can stay in all year round.” The location is the biggest draw for buyers. The famous C Shop, which sells candy, pizza, baked goods and other treats, is a minute away, along with miles of Birch Bay beachfront, restaurants and cafes, and plenty of outdoor activities. You’ll also find Birch Bay State Park and boat launch, water

slides, go-carts, mini-golf and several golf courses nearby. “There are a ton of things to do,” Hughes says. “Most weekends you’ll find something going on.” Among those things are arts and music festivals, fireworks, the Birch Bay Marathon, parades, sandcastle contests, car shows and many other events. Plus crabbing, clamming and fishing are lots of fun for the family and great for dinner! “We’re just 12 minutes from the border,” says Hughes. “You can come down with the family for the entire summer or just for the day.” He also notes that if you’re not able to come down to the cottage yourself, you can rent it out to other families

looking for a beach getaway. The developers of the property include two Canadian families, and most of the buyers so far are from the Lower Mainland. “You can’t touch this price anywhere in the Lower Mainland,” Hughes says. “It’s much more affordable to buy in the U.S. Plus, there’s a minimal amount of legal fees (and) no property purchase tax.” Cottages at Shorewood start in the low $200,000s.
