There’s more to pumping iron than power and strength. Some of the most fit are among the most prone to suffer from iron deficiency because iron is lost through sweat. If you sweat a lot, you are more likely to fatigue easily and consequently fall short of your performance goals. Iron deficiency is easily corrected through supplementation. Canada’s most recommended choice is Floradix. Athletes may be iron-deficient as iron is often lost through sweat during strenuous exercise. Fatigue, dark under-eye circles and pale skin may be signs of iron deficiency.

Chronic daily stress (work, school or constant worrying) can rapidly deplete the brain’s serotonin reserves, causing depression, low stress adaptation, sleep disturbances and excessive cravings for sweet and starchy foods. A few common signs of weak adrenal function are overeating and weight gain, low feeling of energy, fatigue, irritability, chronic tiredness, oversleeping and frequent immune system rundown. By using the ULTIMATE ANTI-STRESS on a regular basis-in the evening-you can aid your body’s ability to replenish from the day’s unrelenting stress toll and wake up feeling refreshed.

Submitted Recently, members of the Sparwood and District Fish and Wildlife Association and the Elkford Rod and Gun Club met at The Nature Trust of British Columbia’s (TNT) Big Ranch conservation property in the Elk Valley to assist with a grassland enhancement project on the property. The turn-out from both clubs was exceptional, the BBQ lunch provided by the Sparwood club was terrific and it was great to see all the young kids that accompanied their parents to the project site (see figure 2). In all it was a fun and productive day. With respect to the Big Ranch, it is part of three contiguous properties that collectively comprise what TNT refers to as the Big Ranch Conservation Property Complex. Historically, both clubs have actively participated in the acquisition of these lands and, from a management perspective, have been directly involved in a number of habitat
enhancement and restoration management projects since the first conservation property in the complex, was purchased in 1989. The principle intent of the 2013 Big Ranch habitat enhancement project is to buck and pile dead and down Lodgepole pine trees (figure 3), killed by an attack of Rocky Mountain pine beetle and consequently, by consolidating the dead material (figure 4), increase the area of available forage on the project site. Selection of the project site on south facing aspects was intentional. Currently, considerable areas on these aspects on the Big Ranch have become less suitable in terms of forage productivity and availability due to forest encroachment and blow-down. “Consequently, our focus, said Rob Neil, TNT’s Kootenay Conservation Land Manager, is to target the warm, dry, south facing aspects that “ green-up” early in the spring and subsequently provide much needed nutritious for-
age for elk and deer trying to replenish energy reserves depleted over the winter season. In my opinion, says Neil, through implementation of this project, we reached our objective over quite an extensive area and, by burning this material and seeding the disturbed sites this fall, we will increase the area of productive and available forage for elk and deer even more”. The Nature Trust of B.C. would like to extend its appreciation to all the members of the Sparwood and District Fish and Wildlife Association and the Elkford Rod and Gun Club who participated in this project. Habitat enhancement is an important aspect of TNT’s land management program for this property and through your time, effort and support you have helped TNT achieve and maintain a diverse and functional mosaic of suitable habitat types on the Big Ranch conservation property.

Relay For Life Cranbrook -by Erin Beyeler The Cranbrook/Kimberley Relay For Life is in its fourteenth year of bringing together members of our community to fulfill a common goal. Once a year, on this day, we join together to CELBRATE Cancer survivors, to REMEMBER lives lost to Cancer and to commit to FIGHT BACK against this disease that touches us all. I first experienced Relay For Life four years ago, when a friend asked me to come out and volunteer for two hours. Thankfully I said yes, and as it turned out, those two hours were to have a profound impact on my life. I felt that I was finally able to “do something” to fight against this illness that had touched my family as it had so many of my
friend’s families. The next year I wanted to be even more involved and so I volunteered as Registration Chair for the Relay. I found that role so rewarding that two years ago I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to fill the position of Leadership Development Chair. As I said, those two hours changed my life! We as a Committee work tirelessly to put together the Relay For Life, but more importantly, it is a time where hundreds of people, just like you, come together as teams or even individually, to participate in the relay while raising funds in support of the Canadian Cancer Society. It is just 12 hours but what a powerful 12 hours it is. Throughout the day
we organize activities for the kids as well as all the participants. We are lucky to have entertainment from local bands on our stage, food and drink available throughout the day and some beautiful and meaningful ceremonies. And Wow, what ceremonies they are! It is hard to explain the personal significance for each of us as we celebrate our survivors, remember those we have lost to cancer and where we again make personal pledges to continue to fight back against this disease. My personal experiences and the reasons I Relay are different from everyone else’s. I Relay for my mother-in-law, Tess, who passed away three weeks before our first child was born. I Relay for my mom’s best friend,
Let’s make cancer history! Together we can help!

Barb, who was taken far too early. Finally, I Relay for my children, so that one day, hopefully they won’t have to! In the beginning, I have to admit, I Relayed out of anger and fear. Fear for my children’s future and anger because they will never meet some of the extraordinary people that they never had the opportunity to know. But I have to say that for me, Relay changed that anger and fear to HOPE, hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, hope that those who face cancer today and in the future will be supported, and hope that one day cancer will be eliminated! Every participant at Relay For Life participates for their own personal reasons. What would be yours?

You can make a donation or volunteer to help out on Relay day – many volunteers are needed for jobs both big and small! What about starting or joining a relay team? Is there some major reason you can’t? Think about how many donations you could get, isn’t that even better than just making ONE yourself ? And the fun you will have with your team! Ask yourself, if you were a part of Relay for Life, Why would you be relaying? Each
and every person that is a part of Relay has a reason; and every reason is a little bit different yet just as touching as the last! I relay for myself, my family members, and my friends who I have lost their lives or fought this horrible disease. I also relay because I believe we can make more happy endings. Here is my story of when I found out I had CANCER. September 12, 2011 was just another Monday when I received a call from my doctor saying he wanted to see me as soon as I get off of work, he wanted to give me the results from a recent routine scope. When I arrived, he told me to sit down as he had disturbing news to tell me. He said that I had CANCER. He told me that everything would be ok and he would get treatment for me as soon as possible. I left the Hospital and sat in my car and I cried. All
I could think about is that I was going to die from CANCER at a young age, just like my friend Brenda who passed away in 2009. I kept thinking about leaving my children without a Mom the same way Brenda’s daughter had been left on her passing. I drove home and sat on our deck and just cried. I reached out to someone else who fought the same form of disease as me a few years before. She came over and talked me through the shock and who I needed to contact. Top of my list was the Canadian Cancer Society in Cranbrook. They were AWESOME!! They told me everything I had to do step by step. The Canadian Cancer Society helped me with all my treatments, medication, traveling expenses, lodging, etc ... My doctor was great and got me into the BC Cancer Agency in
Kelowna to start radiation and chemotherapy right away. My husband and I stayed in Kelowna for 2 months so that I could receive my treatment every weekday. I met a lot of different people there fighting the same disease or other types of Cancers. We exchanged stories and
became friends. The many POSTIVE letters, emails, songs, and notes of encouragement from all my Family and Friends helped support me through my battle. Now I am luckily in REMISSION since September of 2012, but since my battle, I have lost two very dear friends to
CANCER. SURVIVORS like me are proof that we are making progress in the fight against CANCER. While research is only one part of what the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life funds, without this lifesaving research I would likely not be alive today to tell my
story. I will never stop fighting this disease. Please, give or join if you can, as every little bit helps! I walk for those that I know and love, I also walk for you and yours. Lisa Primrose Honorary Chair

“It’s so simple. Nobody needs to die from prostate cancer.” Cohen learned he had prostate cancer eight years ago. His brother was diagnosed after changes were
registered in his blood tests. A cousin, who is a doctor, called Andy to say he was sure Andy would have it as well - he needed to be tested immediately. It was a month from
the initial test to having his prostate removed. The cancer cells were microscopic but the choice to have it removed for Andy was easy. He’s the kind of guy who takes action to solve problems. But still – being told you have cancer feels like someone has socked you in the stomach. “My hands were shaking and my stomach clenched. But we just dealt with it. I had it very easy compared to other people’s experiences.” Andy’s message to all guys is that “it’s so easy” nobody needs to suffer from this particular cancer. A simple blood test called a PSA can determine a baseline – then fol-

low up blood tests can gauge any changes and the disease can be detected early. His experience led Andy to get involved with the Relay for Life event in Kimberley, where he was living at the time. Kimberley Alpine Resort, his employer, became a major sponsor for the city’s event. “There is no doubt
in my mind that money spent on research is making a huge difference.” He believes fund raising events like Relay for Life are critical to carrying on life-saving research. Join us at the Elk Valley Relay For Life Saturday June 8th and show cancer survivors like Andy that they do not walk alone!

A personal fight against cancer takes courage. A community’s fight takes commitment. Volunteers are the driving force behind the charge… If you want to make a difference in the fight against cancer, the Canadian Cancer Society needs you! With the 2013 Relay for Life scheduled to start at 6 p.m. on Saturday,June 15, event volunteers, teams and community leaders are needed to help the committee raise funds for the best in cancer research, prevention and support programs. Volunteering is a great way to give back to your community. It
is because of dedicated volunteers like Invermere resident Sheila Tutty that Relay for Life is a great success in Columbia Valley. Sheila says, “My role is ‘Relay Chair’ but I’m really the conductor for those who get the work done.” Sheila first started volunteering with Relay in 2007 after her first cancer diagnosis. “I was asked to be the ‘Survivor Chair’ and after two years became the ‘Leadership Chair’.
Many of the volunteers on the committee have been diagnosed with cancer or have had family members or friends affected by it.” When asked about the impact of Relay on her community, Sheila states, “We live in a small community and we are always hearing about someone being diagnosed with cancer. Our community raises a heck of lot of money and the Canadian Cancer Society
provides a lot of support to those cancer patients and their families. It is very rewarding to raise that kind of money for such a worthwhile cause.” The Relay for Life Campaign is also an opportunity for cancer survivors to come together, “There are a lot of people in this valley that people don’t even know had cancer. Between the Luminaries and the Survivors’ Victory Lap, it is heartwarming to see so
many survivors wearing yellow shirts.” 2013 will be Sheila’s last year ‘conducting’ the Columbia Valley Relay for Life, “I want to give someone else the opportunity to step up to this role. We have a well-run event and I will be available to help the new Leadership Chair with anything that is needed. We have been doing this event for so long, the action plan is in place and it’s just a matter of finding the
right people to carry it out. Change is good. New blood brings new ideas.” The Society is asking Columbia Valley residents to participate in Relay for Life this June. Volunteers are needed now. Anyone interested in participating or taking on the Leadership Chair position can contact: Jacqueline Salvino, Volunteer Engagement Coordinator Sirvolunteers@ bc.cancer.ca

The Canadian Cancer Society Celebrates 75 Years! It’s the Canadian Cancer Society’s 75th Anniversary this year, and we want all of our proud Relayers For Life to help us celebrate! The Columbia Valley and Creston and District Relays are both taking on an event theme – for the first time – to help us commemorate this incredible milestone! We will be taking a “Walk Through the Ages” - to celebrate each of the decades of the Canadian Cancer Society’s history. Teams are invited to choose a decade from the Society’s his-
tory: that’s the 1930’s straight through today! Teams dress up as per their decade, and decorate their sites accordingly. Choose your decade and have fun with this one! On a more serious note, let’s take a look at some of the milestones we have seen over the 75 year history of the Society. 1930s • In 1935, the Governor General of Canada invited Canadians to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the coronation of George V by donating to the King
George V Silver Jubilee Cancer Fund. The campaign successfully raised almost $500,000 by the end of the year. In 1937, the National Study Committee recommended the formation of the Canadian Society for the Control of Cancer and this new organization was officially launched the following year. (We changed our name to the Canadian Cancer Society a few years later.) 1940s • On January 27, 1947, a group of leading Ca-

A donation of $35 will empower one cancer patient with the information they need to better understand their diagnosis and make informed decisions about their health. Families devastated by a child’s cancer diagnosis face overwhelming emotional, financial, and practical challenges. A donation of $35 can be used towards financial support for a family with a cancer diagnosis. One in five cancer patients cannot get to treatment. A donation of $50 could assist with the cost of transporting one cancer patient to a life-saving treatment appointment, so that they can focus on getting well. A donation of $75 could help with the costs of providing a summer recreation program for a child at Camp Goodtimes.

Northwood Estates Lot Price Increase Effective June 15th, all available lots in Cranbrook’s Gated Community of Northwood Estates will increase in price by $5000.00. New Dawn Developments is the exclusive Builder in Northwood Estates. “Time still remains to secure a lot at today’s prices which start at only $99,000.00 plus GST,” reports Sherry Graburn, Design Lead for New Dawn. “The lots are very generous in size and we still have a few lots that back onto the open green space or the treed walking path so the views are very nice,” says Graburn. With more than 10 bungalow designs to choose from, homeowners can find the floor plan that offers the perfect fit for their lifestyle. “Our one bedroom Wentworth Design has been so popular that the last two showhomes we started building have sold during frame stage,” exclaimed Graburn. “It has been so much fun working with the new excited homeowners quickly picking out the flooring, cabinets, paint and lights for their home and still being on time for completion.” At Northwood Estates, homeowners can stop worrying about maintenance and focus on the finer points of life like travel and spending time with loved ones. All homes are designed with low maintenance in mind with 30-year asphalt shingles, vinyl siding, cultured stone accents, and underground sprinkler systems. In addition to being low maintenance, the homes in Northwood Estates have been constructed within the Built Green Registry. Elements such as a dual flush
toilet, low flow faucets, and energy star windows all contribute to Built Green Ratings. New Dawn is committed to providing exceptional service, not only during construction but also after you move into your new home. They offer a ten year Builder’s Warranty and will meet with you at your home, as scheduled, to do service inspections along the way. Call New Dawn today and see for yourself that it is not too late or too much trouble to have the home of your dreams now. Promising to finish your new home on time and on budget…. come build with us!

Renovations that pay off Several elements can affect the resale value of your home, starting with its surface area, location, and its age. Renovating bathrooms, kitchen, and paintwork are good resale investments, as are as a wide array of other improvements that can increase market value. Among the renovation projects that represent the best return on investment (between 50 and 75 percent), experts recommend replac-
ing the heating system, finishing the basement, adding a fireplace and a garage, and installing solid wood flooring, new doors and windows, and good quality exterior siding. Other projects include replacing the roofing shingles, adding a patio and a central air-conditioning system (25 to 75 percent) and, to a lesser extent, the addition of a home cinema and a fence as well as landscaping and a paved or

asphalted driveway (25 to 50 percent). According to the experts, projects that have little effect on the resale value of your home include the addition of a pool or a skylight. Of course, work that is done poorly or in bad taste will negatively affect the potential sales value of your property. Another thing to keep in mind is that if you entrust some of your renovations to a professional, always insist on a written agreement with a clear completion date. Wherever possible, opt for eco-energy solutions that will allow you to sell more quickly and at a higher price.

The Camara ZL1 is the car that grabs attention wherever it goes—for good reason. Overall: Not content with the Mustang-slaying ZL1, Chevrolet now takes on the Boss 302 with reintroduced 1LE. Drivetrain: The base models are motivated by an updated 3.6-litre V6 with 323 horsepower; SS and 1LE get a 6.2-litre V8 with 426 horsepower; ZL1 580-horsepower version of the Corvette ZR1’s engine. After a hugely successful introduction of a supercharged ZL1 coupe and convertible, the Chevrolet Camaro returns in 2013 to play a little game of oneupmanship with the trackrat Ford Mustang Boss 302. The 1LE is a throwback to the like-named package that turned regular Camaros into showroom-stock racing specials. Now only available on SS models with no changes to the 426-horsepower 6.2-litre V8, the 1LE gets most of the suspension, braking,
bigger wheels and sticky tires that make the ZL1 so entertaining, but without the weight — and cost — of the supercharged engine. Only a six-speed manual transmission can be had with 1LE, although “regular” SS models can get a six-speed automatic, although horsepower drops to 400 in those cars. The latter combo is equipped with a fuel-saving feature that shuts down half of its eight cylinders when coasting or under light load. SS models add beefier Brembobrand brakes, lowered ride height, sport suspension, new-style 20-inch wheels (redesigned 18- and 19-inchers are standard) and a performance mode setting for the traction and stability control systems, which are vital to preventing this rear-drive machine from becoming too tail happy. Since The ZL1’s headline-grabbing figures of 580 horsepower are now
under fire from Ford’s latest Shelby GT500 and its thermonuclear supercharged V8 with 662 horsepower, but the Camaro’s wider tires and magnetic ride control found in the Corvette and Cadillac CTS-V make it faster once the road turns. While the Camaro’s general shape is retro-inspired, the lines on the ZL1 are bolder with more modern cues. It features a wide-front grille flanked by four fog lights, and a carbon-fibre hood vent. To handle all that power and torque, the ultimate Camaro gets the same Magnetic Ride Control found in the Corvette and CTS-V, and the clutch in the six-speed manual transmission is suitably beefed up (the six-speed automatic will remain an option). Also new for 2012 is the steering wheel, a more aggressive suspension package for the SS Coupe and a standard rear spoiler on all models.

An optional 247-horsepower turbocharged engine adds vroom with the efficient Optima. Overall: The honeymoon is long over with, which means our continued affection for Kia’s midsize sedan must in fact be true love. Drivetrain: All engines have four cylinders in regular, turbocharged and hybrid flavour; manual transmissions available at every rung in the trim level. If you’ve been wondering who lit the fire under Kia’s rear bumper, the most likely person is designer Peter Schreyer who joined the company after a long stint with Audi. That’s right, Kia has a hotshot German designer and one of his best creations to date is the Optima. The Optima shares the related Hyundai Sonata’s range of powerful fourcylinder engines: the entrylevel is a 2.4-litre unit that produces a very healthy 200 horsepower, while an optional 274-horsepower tur-
bocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine quenches your thirst for thrust. There’s also a hybrid-electric version of the 2.4, but with only 169 horses (206 total with the electric motor). As you might expect, the hybrid is the most fuel efficient (5.6 l/100 km city and 4.9 highway) but even the base engine produces a respectable 8.7 l/100 km in the city and 5.7 on the highway. Most interesting is that the hybrid system uses unique lithiumpolymer batteries that are lightweight and can actually be formed into shapes. The hybrid can travel at speeds of up to 60 mph (96 km-h) without the gas engine assisting. Kia’s reputation is built on value, and the Optima is no different. Very well equipped for the class with standard air conditioning, power everything, a cooled glovebox, tilt and
telescoping steering wheel and keyless entry. Once you move up to mid-range EX or top-range turbo-only SX models, features such as front and rear heated seats, leather upholstery, back-up camera, a premium Infinity sound system and a navigation system are available as options. For buyers with a sporting intent, the SX comes with 18-inch wheels, bigger front brakes, sportier suspension, bright highintensity-discharge (HID) headlights, LED taillights, a rear spoiler, side sills and unique bumper design. Throw in a five-year warranty and customers should be beating a path to their local Kia dealer.
